Re: checking mail: bug?

2002-03-29 Thread ETM

It happens to me as a "dialogue block" only when my cable's mail
server isn't properly handling mail. I usually cancel out the
dialogue. The next timed connection often goes through. I tend
to think of it as one of those mysterious dialogue blocks
(similar to MS's OE messages) that broadly describe a possible
problem, in this case, my own mail server.

I wouldn't be so quick to call it "carping". As you mentioned there are a
lot of Users who question what it is and what value it has. The sheer
number of Users asking should give RITLabs cause to revisit the feature.

It isn't the function that people complain about, rather the location, and
justifiably so.

I hear you... and understand it... but I wonder if it's not RITLabs we
should be directing it to. ;o)

Veddy interhesting I deleted my Inbox-Known from one of my
accounts without deleting the filter, and it hasn't resurfaced. Well,
not that I know about, anyway, although there have been several
mysterious depressions in the freshly made bed.

I keep thinking of leaving TB!, either because the world is tailoring
itself to Outlook or because I'm pathologically unable to stay with
something for too long. But I keep sticking with it because, even
with its deficiencies, it's the best mailer out there.

In any event, reading a message with the word "thrice" made my day.

I wonder if it's time to have a separate list for carping about the
known filter. I'm beginning to feel like I'm reading the same message
over and over and over again. I guess the real capper is the ones
where someone writes, I deleted, the known folder, it broke TB, so I
reinstalled, deleted it again, and it broke again.

And if you don't like the menu navigator button, don't use it.

I got lots of good help here when I first started using TB! and I
still learn things once in a while, but I'd be able to lighten up if
some others would lighten up.

Just needed to vent I guess.

Then the problem exists with your Template. You must not have:

deletion of messages during mail sync

2002-03-29 Thread Charter

Hi,

I have been syncronizing messages using the sync tool. However, I
would like to have the synchronize operation delete message on the

the sync process is only additive.

Without this, the sync tool does not provide much use and I have to
backup and restore which can be a pain since my mail files are
   huge.

I tried looking online and in the docs, but could not find anything
while would enable this mode of sync.

The return of the zombies

2002-03-29 Thread Karin Spaink

After having upgraded to 1.60, I deleted the inbox-known.
After Haico explained on the list how to delete the filter
(Shift-Delete), I did so too.

Currently I am witnessing the return of the Inbox-Known
mailbox and filter _again_. I have deleted both trice by
now. Yet, they insist on returning after I have closed and
re-opened TB a few times. They do not always return
immediately after closing and re-opening, but in the end
they do. They are like zombies, resurrecting themselves from
the dead after having been killed more than once.

I admit defeat. Worse, after having used TB happily for a
year and a half and advocating it to all my friends, I am
now reconsidering. I do not want programs that decide which
mailboxes I should have and then disallow me my own choices.
Make it an option but do NOT create mailboxes for me against

Shit like this made me leave Eudora. Shit like this will

Re[2]: Smart Bat rules!

2002-03-29 Thread Roberto Machorro

Hi all!

I very often find myself in need of:

- Replying to several people similar ideas/stuff
So in SmartBat I copy/paste their names and ideas and hints of
what I want to tell them, then when I'm done checking all e-mail I
come back and reply. My previous solution was to open a New Message
and stick in some ideas in the edition box, soon I would have 5-12
emails, I'd come back to them and answer the question.

- Thread un-friendly lists
I don't know if people have noticed, but there are lots of
thread un-friendly lists out-there, not that it's the majordomo or
whatever software they are using's fault. But the people's fault. So
sometimes keeping a scratch-pad with notes helps you keep yourself on
top of things. I'm currently in about 27 lists, some low-volume, some
high volume.

- Organizing ideas with several people
I participate in several open-source (whoops! I mean GPLed :)
projects, upon a heavy discussion where several ideas an criticisms
where thrown in I would take out notepad and put in ideas. Storing
them with the date as the filename. SmartBat puts it all in a single
easy to access area and you can skip between the dates using the
calendar thingy.

- Pre-create e-mails
Sometimes it's easier to sketch e-mails through the day (as
ideas are coming to you) and then just sending them off when desired.
The Message postponing, Notes combo was OK though, but I like it this
way better, my whole reasoning is there at a glance.

There are much more things you can do with just a plain text editor
with a search function ;) like SmartBat. And I know I'll find out
more and so will you!

Smart Bat rules!

2002-03-29 Thread Roberto Machorro

Hi to all!

Earlier in time I wrote asking what SmartBat was supposed to be. "A
notepad with search functionality" was the common reply for my e-mail
and for those that asked a similar question afterwards.

Well, all I can say is that it rules! After using it for a few days,
I've used for a whole bunch of things (funny how simple ideas con go
so far!), here are some of the uses I've given it:

- Multiple text clipboard
- Scratch-pad
- Simple TODO / day organizer (if I could sync this thing with my Palm
easily I'd be ecstatic!), Palm Desktop chaps my ...
- Thought organizer at the touch of an F6
- Mail organizer (got gazillion e-mails)
- Post-it (TM) substitute
- Calls and reminders
- ...

I have assigned a system hot-key for it and now I have it available
from any app!

One question though is how often is the text saved? I type the CTRL-S
sequence every time I type new stuff in, but might be wasting my
energy.

JL> Is this possible?

It would appear so. Note that I built this regex macro based on your
example above. Normally we discuss complex things such as regular
expressions and their use on TBTECH but I'll still explain this since
it has to do with filtering.

Create your filter with strings to use etc. To get the text exported,
go into the filter rules' filter actions tab, scroll down until you
reach the option 'Export Message to File'.

Select 'Append to Existing file'.

There are two buttons associated with the action. The one to the left
will bring up a dialog for you to browse to and/or create the desired
text file. The button to the right will bring up the template that
defines how the message text is exported.

In the export format template put the following regex:

%SETPATTREGEXP="(?is)(^Name:.*?\nCity.*?\nProduct.*?\nAmount:?.*?\n).*"%-
%REGEXPBlindMATCH="%TEXT"
%Subpatt="1"

You can test this on some of your messages. You can assign a shortcut
to the filter so that you can manually test messages.

Well, they don't have to. If you use OE (and I guess it's the same with
Outlook, don't know about AOL) and you are using HTML formatting, then
there's a button to create a link. This will take care of the stuff, so you don't have to matter about it. So I still think
that it's preferable not to make an address clickable if this was not
intended by the original creator. But that's just my $0.02.

Agreed, the PTV makes recognized addresses clickable. But on the other
hand, how would you code an address in plain text?

Nickname auto complete

2002-03-29 Thread Databug

Hello all,
I`m using the Bat 1.60c and have been pleased to find the nickname
comletion working however if I could suggest a further improvement to
this feature. I have a friend whose nickname is Phinehas and his EMail
addy is phinehas1@--- however when I type phinehas it comes up with the
Email instead of the Nick. Then the Bat uses phinehas1 for the
%TOFName. So my suggestion is that that the nickname search takes
priority over both the name and Email addresss. and that the %TOFName
should always be the actual first name and not the first part of an
EMail addy.

That`s all for now

I too got fed up with Eudora's instability some time back.

There is actually one beta in progress, 5.1 for OS X, but they do seem
moribund. I really can't imagine them actually discontinuing the
program, unless going adware had a negative impact on their revenue
flow, just stopping development. But I'm not privy to any information
or even rumors.

Initial Prefix is really bitten a lot of other MUA out there :-)
My mailer developer just response this conditions last 2 weeks, it does
recognize quote prefix more better now :-)

If you really want to be fancy and use the capabilities of TB!, you
can set things up so that initials are used if the sender is using a
client that supports initials, otherwise initials will not be used.

If interested do the following.

Create a Quick template and give it the handle name 'prefix'. In it
paste the following regex template macro:

%IF:"%SETPATTREGEXP=""(?im-s)^X-Mailer\:.*(Bat!|Becky).*$""%-
%REGEXPBLINDMATCH=""%HEADERS""%-
%SUBPATT=""1"""="":"NONE":"I"

After that, for each template in which you need to use initials
appropriately, place the following macros *before* the %Quotes macro.
You can place this line above the %Quotes macro.

%Quotestyle='%Qinclude="prefix"'%-

You're done. Enjoy!

I see your logic, I guess, but disagree. If a non-programmer using OE
or Outlook or AOL is writing an email, they would not think of coding
the site, nor should they.

One could, I suppose, say that's fine, but then the URL shouldn't need
to be hot. While that might be true, (a) Internet-related pages have
evolved to contain, and are expected to contain, hot links, and (b)
it's inconsistent with the way that the text viewer itself works in
TB! A non-coded URL will be hot in the text viewer.

Hello Marion,

One thing you may want to do, just to be compatible with the widest
range of other people's mailers, is to use the "standard" quote prefix
("> ") instead of a sender's initials. To change that for each
account, under Account Properties/Templates/Reply, choose "none".

Ah, I see now. You mean the fact that a plain www address is not
internally recognized as a link and therefore not made "clickable". But
that is what I'd expect. If someone wants clickable links in a HTML
mail, one could easily use www.name.com.

I wouldn't call it a bug, it's exactly what I'd expect. But I'm sure

Re[2]: SOS -- upgrading to new machine... [UPDATE]

2002-03-29 Thread Reed Byers

UPDATE:

The whole procedure worked flawlessly. After copying my Email folders
to a safe place, I upgraded to The Bat! 1.60C on my old Win98 system
-- no problem. Then I used the Tools->Backup menu option to save
everything it possibly could. On the new system, I installed The Bat!
1.60C, and sure enough, it asked if I wanted to restore from a backup
file. I clicked "Yes" and voila, everything is exactly as it was, only
on my new system and with an upgraded Bat.

My thanks to all who responded so quickly; especially to Dierk Haasis
and Allie C Martin, whose recommended procedure saved me so much
hassle.

I haven't installed ZoneAlarm yet -- if I do, and there's any
problems, I'll let everyone know.

(Now if only the new Bat implemented a "bound" cursor option in the
Email editor, my life would truly be complete...)

UPDATED UPDATE:

Oops. Just as I went to send this, I realized my personal address
book did not get imported with everything else. Should I simply
locate and copy the address book files from my previous Bat directory,
or is there a better way? Thanks again!

Right! I have been using Eudora for 7 years now, never really
configuring it from scratch, but lately it has been playing trics on
me and making some messages disappear in cyberspace. So I decided to
try The Bat!

Okay, I'll take that into account. And I'll try out Lars' suggestion
with the maco, although that will need some studying ;-)

Other question I couldn't find, what is the purpose of the
inbox-known?

Ctrl-F4 and quoted text

Hello Dwight.

At 9:31 PM on Thursday, March 28, 2002 you wrote the
following about [CTRL-F4 and quoted test]:

Dwight> What is needed is a key stroke which allows one to highlite text, then

Since it doesn't currently exist, why not try something
  the following?

Create a template that includes %CLEAR & a clipboard dump
so all you have to do is type the name of
your template + & you should have it.

Its not a keystroke but you could make it as short as
3-keystrokes [after SHFT-CTRL-F5] which is not too bad.

It is her setting. TB is one of the few MUAs that uses and recognizes
the sender's initials before the quote signs. Therefore Pegasus doesn't
recognize your quoting and just reflows it.

You can place the following macro in your reply template before the
%QUOTES macro:

,- [ Set alternate quotestyle (put this into your reply template) ]
| %QUOTESTYLE='%QINCLUDE="prefix"'
`-

where "prefix" refers to this Quick template:

,- [ Quick template "prefix" ]
| %IF:'%-
| %SETPATTREGEXP="(?im-s)^(X-Mailer|User-Agent)\:.*(Bat!|Becky|Gnus)"%-
| %REGEXPBLINDMATCH="%Headers"%-
| %SUBPATT="2"%-
| '='':'None':'I'
`-

This will restrict the use of a quote prefix to replies to the people
who use a MUA which is capable of handling it (currently The Bat!, Becky
and Gnus).

It can be traumatic if you're starting out with a new setup with many
new folders or you wish to make a change to all folders as happened to
me when I decided to make most folders new messages be displayed by
the mail ticker. It was tedious going from folder to folder to toggle
the switch I need to. :-/

When using TB!, you don't have to worry that what you see before you
hit send isn't what the recipient will get. So if you get bizarre
formatting in the reply, it's the senders client that did it.

Pegasus has the ability to reflow sender paragraphs when quoting them.
What it did was to reflow you're quoted material, but unlike TB!, it
doesn't recognise initialed quote prefixing. It therefore treated it
like part of the paragraph text and reflowed the prefixes with the
text.

Line length

2002-03-29 Thread Marion

Hello TBUDL,

I am pretty new to The Bat! and by now have spent about one hole day
  to configure my accounts.
I must say, I find the different properties and preferences a bit
confusing. Is there a way to configure all the folders of one
account at the same time? That would save a lot of work ;-)
My real question is about line length. I have looked everywhere,
read the FAQ (where I found the same question but no answer), to
set the characters for line length to less than what they are now.
When I reply to a message, the lines are much too long. When someone
replies again to me, the initials quotes are all mixed up in the
text. Doesn't make for good reading ;-)

I hope someone can tell me where to adjust that?

Small bug in 1.60c

2002-03-29 Thread Yuki Taga

Set the View/Character Set to Shift-JIS. Works, by golly; I can
actually see both the message list subject and the subject in the
viewer subject line in good Japanese, on a test Shift-JIS message I
sent myself from Japanese Hotmail. (sadly, the message only views
with the RTV, though)

However, the setting is obviously sticky, which isn't really a
problem. But upon closing TB and reopening it, the View/Character
Set, while still set on Shift-JIS (I can still read the Japanese)
shows 'None' is selected when you go and have a look at it.

It's either an odd design, or a small bug. Can anyone confirm with
this or another Character Set?

Usually I do use an empty reply with only signature since usually I don't
feel it is necesarry to quote text especially in personal mail, only
usually need on discussion lists. But when I do I can't just highlight
that text and F4 unless I change the template each time (if want to avoid

I guess I am just too use to PMMail where I highlight, reply and only the
highlighted text is quoted and if just reply no text is quoted.
