product has a chance to behave in such a devastating way.

AutoFormat doesn't recognise a paragraph break unless it contains _2_
newlines. So if you if you want a single newline, i.e. something like
a line
and another,
then you need to turn AutoFormat off.

CTRL-SHIFT-F will toggle AutoFormat on or off.

The alternative is to leave AutoFormat off and use ALT-L (or ALT-C or

MDP Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your

MDP encouraged and we actually request that you not do so on this list
MDP because

MDP a) It makes it difficult to glean context from what you typed at the

Oh it's true, using the scroll bar on the right side of a window is
such a hard thing to do. I can understand really. For my part, I
bought the Microsoft IntelliMouse with a special button rolling on the
middle that helps you for this particular purpose. It works really
great. I think this is a great thing to have to read anything, web,
pdf, mails, source codes, etc. And most of my active colleagues agree
with that.

MDP and

MDP b) It encourages excessive quoting.

Oh I see. For my part I was not too good at school with summaries,
this probably explains your remark. Also, I have no difficulty to type

special effort for you.

MDP We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to
MDP which you're replying, so we know what it is you're referring to,
MDP and then below the quotation, type your response. If you're
MDP responding to more than one part of the original, then quote each
MDP part separately and follow each part with your response.

Just like I do now then.

MDP Now, I know that you may not personally prefer this format and that
MDP you may disagree with some of the reasoning here. We very much
MDP respect this.

Wow, thank you, I was not seeking respect, but at least I have that.
As you can see now I sort of respect your preferences too now, most of
them, so we are all very happy now.

MDP However, this is the format that most of the active members here
MDP prefer and all members are expected, and are being asked to use
MDP the format that will make most of the active membership here
MDP comfortable reading.

I completely understand. But how active are they since they don't want
to type, and don't want to scroll? For my part I much more compare
activity with movement. No, I'm not only talking about the movement of
the eyes! Fingers can move a bit too on the keyboard and at least one
arm and one finger can move on the mouse. But the most important is
the brain activity, this means the most active members are not in a
deep coma or dead. :))

And for a comfortable reading, I recommend, silence, a pillow behind
the neck, a bucket to urinate and a perfusion of water and glucose.
:))

MDP You'll likely get a more responsive group when you post using a
MDP style that is comfortable for them to read and understand.

Oh since I already have the answer to my question: The Bat is not the
reliable product I thought it was, I wont annoy anyone here anymore I
swear. I'll just uninstall The Bat, unsubscribe to this list, and let
the most active members between them. Oh and I forgot to thank you
very much for your respect, it goes right to my heart.

MDP To find out why these MOD messages are posted to the list instead of
MDP private mail, please read the welcome message you received when you
MDP subscribed.

No thank you I don't care really.

MDP :'='':''

Oh this little sign is pretty. Is it something the most active
members enjoy too?

MDP Thank you.

I did nothing really. But thank you for the respect again :D

MDP /moderator'

Do I have to sign like this too? Well maybe the most active members
do, so I'd better do it not to hurt them :))

excess of them might be causing the problem. Still others helped me
find the path to those bat.tmp files in my WinXP Home operating system.
There were 88 of them, all empty. As soon as I moved them out of the

So I then deleted the 88 bat.tmp files.

that your difficulties don't have the same cause as mine.

MB So that's all my latest info. What do you think?

CMG That it's too hard to figure out how to do it. ...

Yes, but the rewards are great in the end. I have been using The Bat!
for something over a year-and-a-half now. I came to it with minimal
computer skills and installed it on a Win95 OS. Generous people on
this list have been my tutors in nearly everything.

CMG ... However, I chose the bat because it uses plaintext /and/ has
CMG a graphical user interface. Or else, I'd still be using mutt.

That's why I picked it. And I'm still a plain-text person. I just turn
the new smileys on occasionally for fun. But too much color on my
screen is distracting, and HTML often physically hurts my eyes.

Additionally, and as my first reason, I picked The Bat! for its
safety. I can view my messages on the server and delete those I don't
want to download. It has its own code for everything and I'm not at
risk from the Internet Explorer core that Outlook Express uses. Well,
the advantages are too many to list here, where everyone values
sticking to the point and being as brief as possible.

Delete your TEMP files if you need to? Tell us all here what happens
then? And thanks again for writing!

CMG No attachments or mime, no virii. Never had that sort of trouble on
CMG the Mac.

All Mac users love the Mac, I think. But once involved with Windows, I
have found it hard to leave. I hope all your difficulties with The
Bat! find solutions soon. :)

There's a way to make a filter in The Bat! which will do that. I'm not
that far along in using filters so I can't teach you about that.
Perhaps you could start a new thread with a subject line something
like How to filter Replies to Original Message folder. That might
catch the eye of some of the experts here, who might not be watching
the threading across folders thread.

Right now, I myself go down to my Sent Mail folder after I send a
Reply to some of my correspondents in Private Mail, and do a
Right-Click on that Reply in the Sent mail message list. I choose
Copy to, and then I have the Reply in the Original Message folder
(for instance, the folder labeled Sue, for my sister).

I do this because I like to keep a chronological Sent Mail folder.

I think a filter could be made that would do both, keep a copy of the
Reply in the Sent folder and in the Original Message folder. But I've
had too much else to learn to try to do this for myself yet.

Anyway, you could also go to the link at the bottom of all posts to
this list and have a look at info there. Just an extra thing to try.
:)

2.11.03 Really Slow on POP Retrieval

2004-06-11 Thread Alex Ezell
It seems that since moving to the 2.11.x versions, my installation of
TheBat! has become very slow on POP retrieval.

The first thing that I tried was disabling all anti-virus and
anti-spam plugins. That didn't work.

Then I tried to delete and rebuild my spam databases. That didn't
work.

Lastly, I removed and then reinstalled TheBat! but it still has this
speed issue.

I have contacted my ISP and confirmed that they are having no
connection issues. I am also experiencing this speed issue on 4
different mail servers hosted in different locations around the US.

This has been going on for more than a week, so a temporary net outage
is not to blame.

Any ideas?

OK, I narrowed it down to the Kaspersky Anti-Virus. It's not a plugin,
but apparently the newer version of KAV must proxy the POP connection
and scan mail as it moves through that connection.

So, now my search is on for a Bat-compatible anti-virus. KAV used to
work so well with it.

A TB! colour group could deal with that differentiation.

Outgoing message filters could be used to move the message to the

2004-06-11 Thread MAU
Hello Ian,

RA Good question! I have MS Office installed, with dictionaries, but TB!
RA doesn't detect _any_ CSAPI dictionaries. I would love to know the answer.

Interestingly, when I was using TB! 1.xx, I could not use the CSAPI
dictionaries. After upgrading to TB! 2.xx, they suddenly started
working (I am using Office 97).

My experience is that TB will only detect CSAPI dictionaries from Office
97. For some time I used Office 2000 (as an upgrade to 97) and I had no
problems. When I moved to Office XP I installed from scratch and TB
could not see any CSAPI dictionaries. So, I uninstalled and then
installed Word 97 with the desired dictionaries and then Office XP again
and everything is working fine here. Why? I don't really know.

bug report - Runtime error when starting TB ver 2.11.x

2004-06-11 Thread SL
Hi BatFolk

I have just submitted my second bug report re TheBat!. With ver
2.11.x, but apparently not ver 2.10.x , I sometimes get Runtime error
messages. Once the runtime messages start to appear, they keep
appearing. I think it is only happening with ver 2.11.02. (Error
message...'this application has requested the runtime to terminate in
an unusual way...')

Questions and comments:

1. I have no idea what runtime or runtime error messages (from
'Microsoft Virtual C++ Library) mean.

2. I just noticed that when you send a bug report to Ritlabs, a copy
dose not automatically go to your 'sent' folder.

3. Has anyone else experienced Runtime error messages with ver 2.11.x
or any other version??

4. I know Ritlabs people are very busy..(as most of us are), but it
would be nice to get at least an automated acknowledgement that they
have received your report and will look at it...

5. Now for some black humour (as opposed to bitterness): The Bat may
be a turbo charged V8, and lesser mailers (ThunderBird, Outlook
Express, Outlook, Eudora, Pocomail, Lotus, Pegasus, Courier/Calypso
etc...all of which I have used) may be like small capacity 4 cylinder
engined cars in comparison, but the little car that goes is faster
than the turbo V8 that won't start ;-)

6. Lest some die-hard TheBat devotees take offence at point '5', let me say that I
have had very few problems with TheBat in the 2-3 years I have been
using it.

means one of the plugins. I guess BayesIt. Many people have reported
