Actually, creator/producer Dan Patterson (the same co-"devisor and
compiler" of "Whose Line") is involved with this show, so this is an actual
license of the format from Patterson's Angry TV, if not the Beeb.

[TV orNotTV] BBC Cutting Back on TV by $120M

2023-03-31 Thread Mark Jeffries
The British pubcaster, dealing with a hiring freeze and a freeze in the
license fee that viewers are supposed to pay to fund them, is cutting
original TV programming by 1,000 hours a year and increasing funds for
radio and and online services--of course, there'll still be "Breakfast" and
the 1:00, 6:00 and 10:00 news (although the domestic news channel and BBC
World News are becoming one and the same, with some programming
differences), along with "EastEnders," "Strictly," "Doctor Who" and
"Pointless" (although there may be fewer episodes per year):

It's noticeable that the increase in radio, the house orchestras, which
play mostly classical music, and the annual Prom concerts series are
getting cut, which should piss off the aging but loyal Radio 3 audience who
views commercial classical stations ClassicFM and Scala with contempt.
Also, despite much criticism, it seems that the Beeb is plowing ahead its
plan to cut back local programming on the local radio stations, with local
programming outside of live sports (mostly soccer) to be from 6 a.m. and 2
p.m., with regional programming for most of the day and national
programming late at night (the stations with the exceptions of Radio London
and Manchester's GMR simulcast news-talk-sports Radio 5 Live overnight),
with hosts and DJs to be cut while the news departments focus on online.

[TV orNotTV] Political Comic Mark Russell Dies at 90

2023-03-30 Thread Mark Jeffries
For decades at Washington's Shoreham Hotel, from 1975 to 2004 in a series
of PBS specials taped at producing station WNED in Buffalo and in a
recurring role on the NBC proto-reality show "Real People," Mark Russell
took aim at everyone in Washington with his one-liners and musical parodies
(sung from behind a red-white-and-blue grand piano)--although today he
might be looked upon as hacky, among those responding to his death were Jon
Stewart (“Mark Russell was a DC institution who did the hardest thing a
comic can do… relentlessly and righteously mock his neighbors.”) and George
Carlin's daughter Kelly ("It’s one thing to have a great comedian mind and
another to be able to craft a song at the drop of a hat, but to combine
them to reveal the endless bulls--t of our nation’s politics makes one an
American treasure."):

[TV orNotTV] Marvel Exec Fired by Disney for Promoing Passion Project for Amazon

2023-03-26 Thread Mark Jeffries
Victoria Alonso, in charge of post-production, effects and animation for
Marvel and a veteran from the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
was a producer of the Oscar-nominated for international film "Argentina:
1985," a drama about human rights abuses in her home country for Amazon,
and allegedly violated Disney policy by doing interviews for the film and
showing up at the Oscars with the film's director instead of the "Black
Panther 2" entourage--she also challenged former CEO Bob Chapek to stand up
to DeSantis over the "Don't Say Gay" bill and was told she could not do any
more interviews for Marvel films--her response was that male Disney
employees have made worse violations and only got wrist-slaps:

https://www.thewrap.com/marvel-victoria-alonso-fired-argentina-1985/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7235283

It should be mentioned that Alonso, as the person in charge for VFX for
Marvel, was on the firing line for the so-called "pixel f--king" the studio
was making over effects scenes in Marvel films and TV shows, although her
boss Kevin Feige was personally involved in some of those actions. It's
been no secret that the quality of the VFX has come into question in recent
Marvel output.

[TV orNotTV] NoTV: NPR Drops 4 Podcasts as Part of Belt-Tightening

2023-03-24 Thread Mark Jeffries
The public radio network has already begun to lay off 10% of its staff and
not fill vacancies and has sent packing the long-running
storytelling/science show "Invisibilia", the hip-hop docuseries "Louder
Than a Riot," the how-people-overseas-view-the-US show "Rough Translation"
and the relatively-new "Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me!" stablemate talk show
"Everyone & Their Mom." The staffs are being laid and the shows will
disappear over the next few months:

https://www.thewrap.com/npr-cancels-podcasts-layoffs/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7234676

The reason behind all this is the drop in underwriting revenue (which on
the podcasts, they can actually call "advertising," since the FCC doesn't
regulate podcasts--and on podcasts you can do what is verboten on
non-commercial radio, like price comparisons and "calls to action"), in
particular the podcasts, probably because NPR doesn't allow its hosts to do
sales pitches for the sponsors.

[TV orNotTV] Tyra Paso Dobles Off 'DWTS'

2023-03-18 Thread Mark Jeffries
Leggy supermodel Tyra Banks is leaving the long-running reality comp
"Dancing With the Stars" after three cycles to focus on behind-the-scenes
work in entertainment--her hiring followed the much-hated by fans decision
to dump Tom Bergeron as host and included the risky move from ABC to
Disney+, which seemingly went well (which, along with Peacock's renewal of
"Days of Our Lives," seems to show that older-skewing shows won't die on
streaming)--no replacement announced, but co-host Alfonso "Carlton" Ribiero
could fly solo:

Len Goodman announced last fall that he was retiring from the US version
(with no hint if he will continue on the UK parent "Strictly Come Dancing")
and pro dancer Cheryl Burke will not be putting the D-listers through their
paces (although she has said that she would not mind a spot on the panel).

Re: [TV orNotTV] BBC football host restored job after criticizing UK's asylum policy

2023-03-13 Thread Mark Jeffries
The clips ran without any studio commentary but, I assume, with added
graphics. It seems like the only BBC voices you heard during that time was
the BBC1 booth announcer leading in and leading out, with the only other
sounds the show's theme (same theme for almost 60 years!) and the sounds
from the match with the commentary from Sky's announcers (or whoever else
was carrying the matches). The opening from last Saturday night:

[TV orNotTV] 'SNL' Pre-Show Segment Editors to Strike

2023-03-10 Thread Mark Jeffries
Around 20 editors who are members of the IATSE Editors Guild who work on
the pre-recorded segments of "Saturday Night Live" have set a strike date
of Apr. 1--they say that besides being underpaid compared to similar jobs
in the industry, NBCU wants to subcontract work to non-union personnel
(something they say is not in any under NBCU contract with IATSE)--a tweet
from the Editors Guild parodies the tweets "SNL" posts announcing future
guest hosts and musical guests with a picture: "APR 1--SNL--STRIKE!":

https://www.thewrap.com/snl-post-production-editors-strike/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7227146

This is the first "SNL"-only strike in the show's 48-year history and if
there is a show Apr. 1, will the editors be dragging on the editing on
purpose so they can't air on the show that night?

[TV orNotTV] 'Price' First Out of TV City Before Renovation

2023-03-09 Thread Mark Jeffries
The venerable CBS game show will begin its 52nd season in the fall at the
new Haven Studios in Glendale after 51 years in Studio 33 (aka "The Bob
Barker Studio") as Television City Studios in the Fairfax District
undergoes a $1.25B renovation project that will double the number of
studios and modernize facilities--network and production company stablemate
"Let's Make a Deal" will also move to Haven from its current home in Van
Nuys, and no indication if the show will go back to a fuller audience
after two pandemic-induced years of seating pre-selected contestants and
their families in pods (which have increased lately), a year before that of
no audience with the pre-selected contestants standing in the hallway
wearing masks until George Gray called their name and three years of
extremely obvious sweetening:

https://deadline.com/2023/03/the-price-is-right-move-production-television-city-renovations-1235283050/

As for the other current shows in TV City (Corden, who's ending, "Y,"
"B," Maher, "Idol," "Dancing with the Stars," maybe the "@midnight"
reboot), no indication yet, although I would not be surprised if the Bell
family soaps move to Sony (even if "B" isn't owned by Sony).

[TV orNotTV] Founder of Inspiration for 'The Bear' Dies at 69

2023-03-08 Thread Mark Jeffries
Joseph Zucchero founded in 1979 a fast food joint on Chicago's Near North
Side called Mr. Beef, which specialized in that peculiarly Chicago
invention of the Italian beef sandwich. The joint was instantly successful
and got national attention when Jay Leno went on Letterman during a week in
Chicago with a sack of Mr. Beef sandwiches by his side (he later featured
them in a Showtime standup special shot in Chicago). Last year, Mr. Beef
became immortalized as the inspiration for the FX on Hulu dramedy "The
Bear," which did take some liberties in its tale of the son of the owner, a
Michelin-starred chef, returning to the beef joint (Mr. Zucchero's son has
been a co-owner for many years). Mr. Zucchero died while receiving cancer
treatment on Mar. 1:

[TV orNotTV] How to Fix the Oscars (But It Won't Happen)

2023-03-08 Thread Mark Jeffries
The Ringer's Daniel Joyaux says admit that it's going to be a five-hour
show and start it at 5:30 p.m. ET, the same time the Super Bowl kicks off,
make the first two hours the craft awards, shorts, documentaries and
international film hosted by a familiar person but not a big star
(examples: BIll Hader, Issa Rae, Jenny Slate), from 7:30 to 8:30 a
half-time show from another location with the original songs (see Rhianna
and Lady Gaga singing their nominated songs back-to-back!), the composers
conducting the orchestra with excerpts from the nominated scores, the
necrology and the only ads previews of upcoming movies while everyone at
the Dolby is drinking and socializing, and a final two hours with a big
star host and the big awards, with a graphic like the "Pardon the
Interruption" rundown showing which awards are coming up, the lifetime
achievement awards returning to the live telecast, and getting off in time,
even with an overrun, for the late local news at 11 p.m. ET:

https://www.theringer.com/oscars/2023/3/6/23626817/academy-awards-2023-how-to-fix-the-oscars-telecast-show

But as I said, it'll never happen, because the Academy be the Academy.

[TV orNotTV] Perry, Allen Kicking BET's Tires

2023-03-08 Thread Mark Jeffries
Paramount is considering selling a majority share of BET, the 42-year-old
cable channel founded by Robert Johnson and sold in 2000 to what is now
Paramount Global--and Black entertainment mogul Tyler Perry and Black media
mogul Byron Allen are seriously considering bidding for the company, which
would include Centric, BET Jams (formerly MTV Jams) BET Soul (formerly VH1
Soul), VH1 (founded as MTV's sister channel for older viewers and now with
mostly reality shows featuring Black celebrities) and the streamer BET+:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/bet-up-for-sale-paramount-global-vh1-1235341981/

A Perry or Allen-owned BET would be attractive to advertisers who want to
support minority-owned media (which the channel is definitely not now). On
the other hand, either of them would have to deal with the criticisms that
have been prevalent from members of the Black community all throughout its
history regarding its programming, especially involving the hip-hop videos
that now run on the flanker channels (as if Perry and Allen aren't already
used to receiving flak from certain members of the community about their
past exploits).

Re: [TV orNotTV] Minhaj Does Inside Rips in Spirit Awards Monologue

2023-03-06 Thread Mark Jeffries
No surprise, considering that Meredith MacNeill's doing "Pretty Hard Cases"
for the CBC and Amazon's Freevee.

In addition, seems that Minhaj started his monologue by saying that award
shows are dead and nobody has seen the nominated films. The big winner of
the day was that surprise $100M grosser "Everything Everywhere All at Once"
(attacked by Bill Maher Friday night--yes, Kevin, I know what he eats) and
one of the TV winners was the star of that sitcom produced by those
bulwarks of indieness Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney on America's
Broadcasting Company (dah DAH da dah!).

[TV orNotTV] SemiNoTV: Right Wing News Sources: Nothing to See Here...

2023-03-05 Thread Mark Jeffries
Only four of the most visited conservative news websites--the National
Review, Salem Media's Townhall, the Federalist and Breitbart--have posted
stories from their own staffers regarding various Fox News people calling
the election conspiracy theorists "crazy"--only four others (including FNC
rival Newsmax) have posted anything self-generated about the Dominion
Voting Systems lawsuit against Fox and the other sites (including Fox's
three sites, OAN, Glenn Beck's the Blaze, Sean Hannity's site, Alex Jones'
InfoWars, Steve Bannon's Real America's Voice program "War Room: Pandemic"
and the radio shows/podcasts of Dan Bongino and Ben Shapiro) haven't said
diddle:

[TV orNotTV] Harmon Cartoon Renewed for 3rd Season on Fox Despite Not Aired Yet

2023-03-02 Thread Mark Jeffries
"Krapopolis," Dan Harmon's animated comedy set in ancient Greece, will
premiere on Fox sometime during the 2023-24 season--but it's been renewed

isn't the only craziness at Rupert's joint:

[TV orNotTV] 'Y' Writers Bloodbath

2023-02-24 Thread Mark Jeffries
As a cost-cutting move and a possible workaround if there is a WGA strike,
"The Young and the Restless" showrunner Josh Griffith has fired the entire
"breakdown" staff of writers, who take the general storyline directions
from Griffith and his assistants and set up the structure of the daily
episodes to be filled in later by "dialogue" writers, and now intends to do
that job himself:

https://michaelfairmantv.com/report-yrs-josh-griffith-pink-slips-entire-breakdown-writing-staff/2023/02/22/

However, it doesn't look good: Four of the five fired writers are women
and one is Black, brought in by the same CBS diversity program that
requires quotas for BIPOC contestants on reality comps and game shows (and
tries to get the producers to not make the BIPOCs stereotypes).

[TV orNotTV] Obscure Aged Brit Actor Quits BAFTA Over Awards

2023-02-24 Thread Mark Jeffries
While most of the controversy over this year's BAFTA awards (seen in the
U.S. on BritBox) was another instance of #BAFTASoWhite when it came to the
winners, 69-year-old Phil Davis, an actor with several notable credits but
nothing that stands out, sent an angry tweet stating that because of host
RIchard E. Grant making his entrance in the Batmobile, the recorded
telecast (only the four major categories were presented live) edited the
acceptance speeches for backstage what Davis called "non-interviews"
conducted by co-host Alison Hammond, a former UK version of "Big Brother"
contestant, and leaving veteran comic actor Bernard Cribbins (best known by
contemporary audiences for his appearances on "Doctor Who") out of the
necrology, he was dropping his BAFTA membership. Whippy dippy:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/bafta-awards-resign-phil-davis-doctor-who-1235332335/

BAFTA's response was that Mr. Cribbins, considered more a television star
than a movie star, would be in the necrology at the television awards in
May. It should be pointed out that Davis spelled Mr. Cribbins' name as
"Cribbens." And could it possibly be that Davis' objections to Hammond,
who he did not bother to mention by name, could be because she's Black?
And did he have any objections to white radio DJ Edith Bowman's
butt-kissing interviews on past BAFTA telecasts?

[TV orNotTV] Ted Lasso's Boss Co-Hosting Eurovision

2023-02-22 Thread Mark Jeffries
Hannah Waddingham, the West End musical star who is now known
internationally thanks to "Ted Lasso," will be hosting the annual song
contest live from Liverpool on May 9, 11 and 13, joined by Brit singer
Alesha Dixon and Ukrainian singer Julia Sanina (the Ukraine won last year
and would be the host country, but you know what's going on) and on the May
13 finals by Graham Norton, leaving the BBC1 booth where he continued in
the snarky tradition of SIr Terry Wogan--will he get away with it when
talking to the whole of Europe, Australia and the US (on Peacock)?:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/hannah-waddingham-eurovision-host-1235331475/

With Norton leaving the booth and longtime BBC Radio 2 host Ken "Popmaster"
Bruce leaving that network, looks like the Beeb is going to have to find
new booth hosts for Eurovision (hopefully, Johnny Weir will be the Peacock
host again, from Liverpool and not from Universal City).

[TV orNotTV] HBO Max Leaves 'South Side'

2023-02-22 Thread Mark Jeffries
The sitcom about two fledgling Black entrepreneurs on Chicago's south side
was one of three Comedy Central live action series that then-Viacom sold to
HBO Max after their first seasons as part of cutting down the original
programming slate to animated series shared with Paramount+, "TDS" and the
Charlamagne da God show--"South Side" made it to a third season on the
streamer, but has now been cancelled:

https://www.thewrap.com/south-side-cancellation-hbo-max/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7219571

And of the other Comedy Central transplants, if the lily-white "The Other
Two" (even if one of the two lead characters is gay) stays around and
"Awkafina is Nora from Queens" doesn't, Daddy Zaslav better get ready for
the race card accusations.

[TV orNotTV] Re: It's far from May, but CBS renews nine series

2023-02-22 Thread Mark Jeffries
And one of them is "Lingo," which has wasted the numbers of the lead-in of
"The Price is Right at Night" every week that it had that lead-in. Seems
to me that RuPaul owes Drew Carey a steak dinner at Morton's and that CBS
and Fremantle should be talking about making the "Price" prime time edition
a regular weekly series instead of a series of specials.

And WGN in Chicago is one of them (Weigel's WCIU is the affil). I'll be

[TV orNotTV] NoTV: 'Takeaway' Being Taken Away

2023-02-21 Thread Mark Jeffries
Begun in 2008 as part of a major effort to make public radio audiences
younger (along with NPR's flop "The Bryant Park Project"), the daily news
program from NY's WNYC, Boston's WGBH and Public Radio International (now
the Public Radio Exchange) started out as a slicker-sounding,
very-highly-produced morning drive competitor to "Morning Edition." When
WNYC replaced two hours of "ME" on their FM station with the new show, the
highly calcified really old end of the public radio audience, already
angered over Bob Edwards' demotion from "ME" (he had gone to Sirius XM by
then) and the reduction of classical music programming on WNYC-FM after
9/11, did not like what they heard, forcing the station to move the show to
their AM station until it moved to midday and was shortened from two hours
to one hour a year later. The show lost most of its attempts at "hipness"
in production and became an accepted part of the schedule--but WNYC,
claiming reduced station clearance and audience and rising costs, has
announced that the program will go off the air in June. Melissa
Harris-Perry, the former MSNBC host who has been doing "The Takeaway" for
two years (after two hosts in a row left under clouds of alleged sexual
harassment) is livid, attacking WNYC on Twitter as committing "an act of
institutional cruelty and abuse by the executives of @WNYC":

https://www.theroot.com/melissa-harris-perry-speaks-out-about-the-takeaway-bein-1850134755

However, since 2008 public radio has found that podcasts have become a true
gateway to younger audiences who don't really listen to radio that much
these days, while stations and listeners seem to have found the
NPR-distributed but produced by WBUR Boston "Here and Now" a more
acceptable midday news show choice.

[TV orNotTV] Netflix Kicks Out the Bluths

2023-02-14 Thread Mark Jeffries
"Arrested Development" will be off the Service as of Mar. 15--and that
includes the two seasons made for Netflix--they say that the license
agreement with Disney (what was originally 20th-Century Fox) runs out then
and that they aren't renewing:

https://www.thewrap.com/arrested-development-netflix-removal/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7215342

However, the first three seasons have been running on Disney's Hulu and it
would be no great shock if the Netflix seasons joined them.

[TV orNotTV] Super de Dooper! Barney's Back

2023-02-14 Thread Mark Jeffries
The costumed purple dinosaur who at his height on PBS in the 90s was
considered, probably depending on your politics, either a positive
influence on children or a fascist dictator of his on-camera little buddies
(which included a young Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez), or in a calmer
sense, not worthy of the network of "Sesame Street" and "Mister Rogers,"
will be brought back by his current owner, the Mattel toy company, in a new
animated series from the Canadians at Nelvana--along with the expected
multimedia and licensed merchandise storm:

https://www.thewrap.com/barney-dinosaur-mattel-revival-2024/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7214887

No US home for the new Barney show as of yet--I would hope that PBS would
stay away this time, but if they're getting a cut of the merchandise,
that's less of the annual financial support of Viewers Like You. Thank you.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Fox SB-pregame chat with Biden up in the air

2023-02-11 Thread Mark Jeffries
More or less. It's talk shows and other programs produced by the Fox First
Run syndication division ("Dish Nation," "Divorce Court") or the Fox-owned
local stations, so there's nothing scripted or no music videos. You do get
two shows hosted or co-hosted by a former "Price is Right" and "Deal or No
Deal" model (and, to be honest, a former Real Housewife--and that would be
Claudia Jordan).

[TV orNotTV] Chappelle Wins Grammy for Trans-Bashing Show

2023-02-06 Thread Mark Jeffries
Dave Chappelle won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album last night for the
soundtrack to his 2021 Netflix show "The Closer," which contained a lot of
what was considered attacks on transgendered people, caused picketing and
trans Netflix employees quitting their jobs--and gave Chappelle a contract
to do more five more standup shows for the service while Ted Sarandos waved
the "free speech" banner:

https://www.thewrap.com/dave-chappelle-grammy-win-the-closer-netflix-special/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7211501

For the record, this is Chappelle's fourth Grammy--his previous wins were
from 2018 to 2020, all soundtracks of Netflix specials (and his
shot-during-COVID for Netflix "8:46" was nominated for spoken word
recording in 2021).

Re: [TV orNotTV] Nexstar Sends CDub Scripted Execs Packing

2023-02-03 Thread Mark Jeffries
I am assuming that in Chicago WGN will reconnect with the CW next
fall--they dropped it back when they still had the Cubs, Sox, Bulls and
Black Hawks and now they don't have any of those teams--they're all on
cable on NBC Sports Chicago, with the exception of the Cubs co-owning with
Sinclair Marquee Network. Presently, the CDub affil is Weigel's WCIU, with
the old "The U" brand on their .2 subchannel and low-powered WMEU. Since I
suspected back then that the only reason WCIU took the CDub was because
they had taken over the rights to the reruns of Jerry Springer as their one
hour of daytime programming, they may not be that interested in the net now.

[TV orNotTV] 'Traitors' Gets Second Season at Peacock

2023-02-03 Thread Mark Jeffries
The first reality comp in some time to get any sort of traction (as can be
figured out since the streamers won't give out numbers) will have its
second season of antics in a Scottish castle with your Scottish ham host
Alan Cumming. In addition, Peacock will drop a reunion show of the first
season on Feb. 28 hosted by (who else?) Andy Cohen and will air the first
season of the UK version that was a hit for BBC1 over the holidays, which
doesn't have former reality show people as contestants and the taciturn
veteran "presenter" Claudia Winkelman as host instead of Cumming's
scenery-chewing:

[TV orNotTV] Nexstar Sends CDub Scripted Execs Packing

2023-02-03 Thread Mark Jeffries
As further proof that the "Dare to Defy" era is over at the CW, along with
the new head of DC Films saying that the Arrowverse of Greg Berlanti is
kaput in his presentation of Phase 1 of the new DCCU and the net hiring an
unscripted programming chief for the first time from NBC's cable division
(including Bravo), two major scripted executives at the network have been
laid off along with an unknown number of others:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/the-cw-guts-development-current-departments-in-latest-shift-away-from-scripted-originals-exclusive-1235316747/

The obvious plan here is to do as little domestic scripted as possible and
fill the rest of the schedule with unscripted and overseas pickups that
will appeal to the over-55s who watch the 10 p.m./9 p.m. CT newscasts on
Nexstar's owned stations. And since "Whose Line?" has already announced
its final taping sessions (which they'll probably make at least 50 episodes
out of) and they can't fill all those slots with "Masters of Illusion,"...

A typically contrarian Slate article says that German critics have not

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Colbert’s long IP nightmare over?

2023-01-31 Thread Mark Jeffries
When it was done in the past, it was before CBS and Viacom remerged, it was
introduced as Colbert's twin from Pennsylvania, who was intimated as the
Colbert on the Report and the segment was called "The Werd." The segment
had the correct spelling and Colbert was very much not the Report character
(the topic was the police murder in Tennessee, something that cutesy
animation would not jibe with)--and do they cue the audience to boo
whenever a picture of a MAGAt appears?

[TV orNotTV] Original Wednesday Addams Dead at 64

2023-01-30 Thread Mark Jeffries
Lisa Loring played the Addams' daughter in the original 60s series at the
age of 5 1/2 (memorizing lines before she could read) and then appeared
with most of the original cast in the 1977 made-for "Halloween With the New
Addams Family"--after the original show ended its run, she went on to the
Phyllis Diller bomb "The Pruitts of Southampton" (which was renamed mid-run
"The Phyllis Diller Show"--didn't help) and had a good run playing Cricket
Montgomery on "As the World Turns"--of a stroke in Burbank with her
daughters at her bedside:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/lisa-loring-wednesday-actress-addams-family-dead-at-64-1235312488/

Correcting the THR obit, MGM, which owns the Addams IP today (including the
Netflix hit "Wednesday"), did not produce the original series--it was a
Filmways presentation, dahlinks (bought by Orion Pictures in 1981, which
was acquired by MGM in the late 90s).

[TV orNotTV] Colbert Attacked for 'Toxic Masculinity' Jokes in Proud Boys Bit

2023-01-29 Thread Mark Jeffries
On Tuesday night's show, Colbert talked about the trial several members of
the neo-fascist group are involved in and the fact that their adopted
anthem is "Proud to Be Your Boy" from the stage version of Disney's
"Aladdin" and snickered at a clip from the show featuring cast member Adam
Jacobs singing the song--Jacobs considered the snicker an attack on his
manhood and wrote the following on Instagram: "Not funny @colbertlateshow.
I understand the point you were trying to make with the Proud Boys, but
completely emasculating me, mocking my work (and all musical theatre
artists) all while using my image without my permission, is a poor way to
go about it. I had always thought @stephenathome was a friend to the
Broadway community, but it sure doesn’t seem like it in this clip.
#PoorTaste” (clip in link below):

https://www.onstageblog.com/editorials/2023/1/26/stephen-colbert-joke-ignites-anger-in-the-theatre-community

Colbert's staff's obvious reply to Jacobs claiming they used the clip
without his permission would probably be B roll (with a "Disney's Aladdin"
credit in the "Late Show" credit font at the bottom of the screen) and fair
use. Most of the comments agreed with Jacobs and another writer to OnStage
Blog compared Colbert to Bill Burr and Dave Chapelle.

[TV orNotTV] Animation Domination OG Set for Two More Years at Fox

2023-01-28 Thread Mark Jeffries
Despite dropping ratings, fan contempt for what some of the shows have
become and the network not owning the shows anymore that have made a
combined 1,400 episodes, Fox is signing on the dotted line for two more
years of "The Simpsons," "Family Guy" and "Bob's Burgers" from Disney's
20th for Sunday nights:

https://www.thewrap.com/the-simpsons-family-guy-bobs-burgers-renewed-fox/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7206820

At the end of this cycle, "The Simpsons" will be the longest-running
scripted series of any kind with 36 seasons, even if the show turned to
poop after the 10th season.

Re: [TV orNotTV] IYC: Oscar nominations

2023-01-24 Thread Mark Jeffries
Well, here's where you can see the Best Picture nominees in the US right
now:

ALL QUIET--Netfilx
AVATAR 2--theaters, IMAX preferred--coming to both HBO Max and Disney+
BANSHEES--HBO Max
ELVIS--HBO Max
EVERYTHING--Showtime, which does stream for cord-cutters
FABELMANS--Theaters and PPV, will probably play on Peacock before the
Oscarcast
TAR--PPV now, on Peacock Friday
TOP GUN 2--Paramount+ and MGM+, the former Epix
TRIANGLE OF SADNESS--PPV now, but Hulu seems to get most arthouse titles
WOMEN TALKING--Theaters now, but will end up on MGM+ and Amazon

Re: [TV orNotTV] IYC: Oscar nominations

2023-01-24 Thread Mark Jeffries
I was going to do a summary of the nominees that basically began life on
streaming, but since Warners ended the day-and-date on HBO Max policy,
there isn't all that much to report. The only streaming nominee for Best
Picture is Netflix's new adaptation of "All Quiet on the Western Front,"
which besides Best Picture is nominated for International Film (Germany),
cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design,
sound, visual effects and adapted screenplay--tied for second in total
nominations with "The Banshees of Inisherin" and just behind "Everything
Everywhere All at Once." Other streaming films in the major categories are
AppleTV+'s "Causeway" (supporting actor Brian Tyree Henry--sorry JLaw),
Netflix's "Blonde" (Ana de Armas as Marilyn), Amazon's "Argentina 1985"
(international) and Netflix's "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" (adapted
screenplay--because of characters that were in the first film). In
addition, three of the five nominees for animated feature--Netflix's
"Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" and "The Sea Beast" and Disney+'s "Turning
Red" from Pixar--had their initial wide release on streaming. You can look
up the short subject nominees yourself.

And yeah--Bitch Slapper Willie didn't get nominated.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Coming soon to the CW? Live sports

2023-01-19 Thread Mark Jeffries
The CW ended their one hour of daytime programming--a holdover from the
days of afterschool kids shows on The WB--a few years ago. The last show
they ran in the daytime was Jerry Springer reruns--before that, it was talk
shows with rightwing radio guy Bill Cunningham, Tyra Banks and Dr. Drew and
reruns of "Seventh Heaven."

Oh yeah. It still seems like Netflix wants the Rock show to be their first
livestream, which it would not be if the SAG awards this year are streamed
there.

Re: [TV orNotTV] CNN may turn to comedy during 9 to midnight period

2023-01-18 Thread Mark Jeffries
Although I will not call Licht a "paste-eater" like he does, I would tend
to agree with Keith Olbermann that the problem with a comedian fronting CNN
in prime time is this: What do they do when news breaks and jokes are
inappropriate? Stewart and Maher have never been tested with having to
become serious anchors doing live coverage and the mind reels of any of the
"TDS" guest hosts being able to pull it off. Would you want Leslie Jones
as the calm guide through serious events--if she could even do it?

I personally would rather have a journalist with a sense of humor on CNN in
prime time than a standup comic.

[TV orNotTV] NoTV: Hackers Hit Jesus Music Radio Net FB Page

2023-01-12 Thread Mark Jeffries
The Facebook pages of Educational Media Foundation, owners of "positive,
encouraging" contemporary Christian music radio network K-Love, have
seemingly been taken over since Dec. 26 by hackers who have posted what can
be described as less than Christian---EMF says that it's trying to regain
control of the pages, but people in similar situations with FB/Meta pages
say that it's a long slog to get that control back:

https://radioinsight.com/headlines/247338/k-love-notifies-listeners-of-facebook-page-hacking/

The non-commercial K-Love is probably the most listened-to religious
network in the U.S. and EMF has acquired a high profile in recent years by
buying established radio stations in major markets--something no one really
wants to do anymore--generally with CASH!--and flipping them to either
K-Love or "worship music" AirOne. They also own podcaster AccessMore and
all of those FB pages and FB pages for K-Love and AirOne programs were
affected by the hack.

[TV orNotTV] CW's New Owners Renew 'All-American'

2023-01-12 Thread Mark Jeffries
The high school football drama will be back for its sixth season on the
network transitioning to its new owners Nexstar, probably because the Greg
Berlanti-produced show doesn't need the special effects that his Arrowverse
shows require, but it is still interesting that the first renewal order of
president Brad Schwartz (who rolled the dice on "Schitt's Creek" and won
when he ran Paramount's Pop TV) isn't the presumed future of the C-Dub of
unscripted or foreign imports:

Re: [TV orNotTV] golden globes 2023

2023-01-12 Thread Mark Jeffries
Well, the overnights are in and the Globes pulled their second-lowest NBC
audience since the WGA strike-affected 2008 telecast (which was basically a
televised press conference) and less than the pandemic-affected 2021
telecast (which was basically Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in an empty Beverly
Hilton ballroom)--but NBC was still second for the night after Dick Wolf's
"FBI" franchise on CBS, so don't bet on the Globes not coming back just yet:

Re: [TV orNotTV] How ESPN Covered MNF Medical Emergency

2023-01-03 Thread Mark Jeffries
Correction to the Post article: Not New York, Bristol. That should be a
given by now.

And this wasn't the only incident like this yesterday on ESPN/ABC. In the
fourth quarter of yesterday's Cheese-Flavored Crackers Citrus Bowl, Purdue
wide receiver Deion Burks was knocked unconscious late in the fourth
quarter. He did come to and is currently in the hospital, but the game
continued, even though LSU was leading 56-7, a blowout:

Re: [TV orNotTV] Mini review: The Wheel

2022-12-30 Thread Mark Jeffries
And the only actual ads were in the local breaks, at least on "The Wheel"
(in the two breaks where there were ads, it was all promos, a PSA for the
Sandy Hook Project, which I'm sure Steve Douchbag and his idiots on "Fox
and Friends" made a comment about this morning, an ad for "Puss in Boots
2," which as a Universal release counts as promo time, and an NFL Shop ad,
which the networks that have the NFL have to run in promo time). In the
old days, this would have been called "sustaining" and Nielsen wouldn't
have measured this, I think. (Also, in the old days this was a "dark week"
where ratings weren't taken and the networks dumped all of their news
documentaries and cultural shows like, uh, the Kennedy Center Honors on the
week's schedule.)

The overnights aren't out yet, so for now we can't check this.

Re: [TV orNotTV] So long, Maggie Thrett

2022-12-25 Thread Mark Jeffries
After listening to "Soupy," I think it does have something to do with Mr.
Sales (as Wally Bruner called him on "What's My Line?" when he was in his
John Daly mode). At that time, he had a daily show on what was WNEW in New
York (and was syndicated) and had a hit record called "The Mouse," another
one of those dance instruction records. With all of the references to mice
in the lyrics to "Soupy," I think that Ms. Thrett's record was an answer
record to "The Mouse" (a tradition that's more of a country music thing).

Re: [TV orNotTV] SortaNoTV: Sausage Roll Boy Beats Beatles for Most UK Xmas No. 1s

2022-12-24 Thread Mark Jeffries
Addendum: Sir Cliff had three consecutive Christmas No. 1s ("Mistletoe and
Wine" in 1988, the Band Aid remake in 1989 and "Saviour's Day" in
1990--don't forget that avowed atheist John Lennon hated him for being a
Bible-thumper), as did the Spice Girls ("2 Become 1" in 1996, "Too Much" in
1997 and the aptly-named last hit "Goodbye" in 1998). All of which left in
the dust now by Sausage Rolls Boy.

[TV orNotTV] SortaNoTV: Sausage Roll Boy Beats Beatles for Most UK Xmas No. 1s

2022-12-24 Thread Mark Jeffries
For the fifth consecutive year, "LadBaby," the nom de YouTube for Mark and
Roxanne Hoyle, have won the coveted Christmas No. 1 single in the UK for
another parody song for charity about sausage rolls. "Food Aid," a parody
of the original charity Christmas record "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by
Band Aid, was only released on Dec. 15 and was able to knock Wham!'s "Last
Christmas" out of the top spot this week (that's for you Americans who are
screaming "Whamageddon!" this year). The previous record-holder was a tie
between the Beatles and original Brit teenage idol Cliff Richard, with both
hitting the holiday top spot four times (technically, one of Sir Cliff's
appearances was as part of the second Band Aid recording of "Do They
Know..." in 1989). Last year the Hoyles beat the Fab Four's record for the
most consecutive No. 1s ("I Want to Hold Your Hand" in 1963, "I Feel Fine"
in 1964 and "Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out" in 1965):

All of the LadBaby parodies--Starship's "We Built This City" in 2018, "I
Love Sausage Rolls" ("I Love Rock and Roll") in 2019, "Don't Stop Me
Eatin'" ("Don't Stop Believing") in 2020 and "Sausage Rolls for Everyone"
(Elton John and Ed Sheeran's "Merry Christmas"--Sir Elton and Sheeran
appeared on the parody) last year--have had the proceeds go to a food bank,
while this year Band Aid is receiving part of the proceeds (in exchange for
the rights to use "Do They Know..."), so in some ways it's better than all
those years in the oughts and 2010s when the Great British Public
mindlessly followed Simon Cowell's dictates and made the winner of "The X
Factor" the winner of Christmas No. 1. But still--the Beatles beaten out

[TV orNotTV] NFL Sunday Ticket to YouTube

2022-12-22 Thread Mark Jeffries
The Google division is shelling out $8B for the rights to the out-of-market
games package to the Internet's most-watched streamer--it'll be available
starting next season as an add-on to the faux cable package YouTube TV or
from the recently-introduced YouTube Primetime Channels, from which you can
subscribe to various streamers and premium services:

https://www.thewrap.com/youtube-secures-rights-to-nfl-sunday-package/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7192841

DirecTV had the exclusive rights for many years and will lose them at the
end of the season.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Jim Gardner is retiring

2022-12-21 Thread Mark Jeffries
I would not be surprised if Gardner's tribute might go on Hulu. They have
put on things from the ABC-owned stations before--and Saturday night, Hulu
will have a "Tracking Santa" show produced by the ABC-owned stations and I
assume featuring appearances from the various anchors, so Gardner may be on
this one as well to represent Action News. As long as they play the theme
song.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Mini review: The Wheel

2022-12-21 Thread Mark Jeffries
McIntyre almost said as much about "1 in 3" at the top of the Monday night
show.

And I saw that there's a credit for an audience warmup guy. It seems to me
that like the British version, there's no real audience (it was said that
the reason for "The Wheel" was that McIntyre's regular show is so dependent
on audience participation that they couldn't do it during the pandemic).
Why would they have a warmup guy for Christian Shrader's laptop (and the
same for the U.S. "The Chase," which also has a warmup man credit and I've
actually seen a video that reveals that there's no audience)?

[TV orNotTV] Emmys Try to Avoid Gang Nominations for Series, Redefine Variety Categories

2022-12-20 Thread Mark Jeffries
The Television Academy has changed the policy allowing members to make
unlimited nominations for a program in each category, making them limited
to the number of nominations per categ(usually five), in an attempt to keep
one show from dominating the acting categories as "White Lotus" and
"Succession" did last year. In addition, the variety show categories have
been redefined from Variety Talk and Variety Sketch into Talk and Variety,
defining the former as predominantly unscripted interviews and discussions
and the latter as predominantly scripted segments, in noticing that there
aren't that many sketch shows around these days (but not wanting to piss
off Lorne by not giving "SNL" its discrete category):

https://www.thewrap.com/emmys-change-rule-hog-nominations/?utm_source=newsletter_medium=email_campaign=breaking_news_7192059

Which seems to me to be a way to get the 100% scripted John Oliver show out
of the talk show category where it wins year after year, especially since
nobody's doing variety shows these days that fit the category except for
between 11:30 and 1 every Saturday night on NBC and Peacock.

[TV orNotTV] 'Mr. Cooper' Star Gets Bum Rush from Hotel He's Staying In

2022-12-15 Thread Mark Jeffries
Mark Curry, still best-known for the sitcom "Hanging with Mr. Cooper," was
doing a standup gig in the conservative community Colorado Springs, Colo.
(I should know--my parents lived out the rest of their lives in that town)
and staying at the Wyndham Hotel there, was hanging out in the hotel lobby
before going to his gig when an employee demanded to see his room key.
Curry asked for his ID and an argument ensued (did we mention that Curry is
Black?). Curry recorded it, put it on his Instagram and told his followers
to call the combined security/maintenance chief at the hotel. The hotel
chain, whose brands include La Quinta, Days Inn, Super 8, Microtel,
AmericInn, Ramada, Baymont, Wingate, Travelodge and Howard Johnson and are
mostly franchise operations, responded by saying that the hotel was a
franchisee, that Curry was being refunded and could stay for free in the
future and that that there would be diversity training (the video is in the
below link):

I would guess that "Curb" would be safe. In the case of "Larry Sanders,"
Sony owns the show and if WBD ever lets the license run out, they'll sell

[TV orNotTV] Ellen's Sidekick 'tWitch' Dies at 40

2022-12-14 Thread Mark Jeffries
Stephen "tWitch" Boss (whose nickname came from his hyperactivity as a
baby) first gained notoriety as a contestant on "So You Think You Can
Dance," later appearing on the show as an "All-Star," choreographer and
panelist. Where most people know him is from the eight years he spent as
Ellen DeGeneres' announcer, sidekick and DJ on her daily talk show and her
NBC hour of abject cruelty "Ellen's Game of Games." It is presumed
suicide, Mr. Boss had posted an Instagram video on Monday showing him
dancing with wife Allison Kolker (an "SYTYCD" contestant and former pro on
"Dancing With the Stars") and their three children:

[TV orNotTV] CNN Leaves Its Longtime LA Home

2022-12-08 Thread Mark Jeffries
Thanks to Daddy Zaslav and Chris Licht, or as Keith Olbermann calls him,
"the paste eater," the cable channel is moving out of its longtime West
Coast home in the office tower at 6430 Sunset Blvd. (an address familiar to
game show fans, since Goodson-Todman Productions was also in that building
for many years) with a CNN logo sign on the top and a news ticker outside,
to the Warners lot in Burbank:

https://play.spotify.com/?utm_source=web-player_campaign=bookmark

Of course, "Showbiz Today" (at one point hosted by Ted Turner's former
mistress) came from 6430, along with their early news lite show "People
Tonight/Now" (hosted by Mike Douglas at one point after his syndicated show
went off) and the later years of "Larry King Live," after King lost his
Mutual radio show and moved west from Washington.

[TV orNotTV] 'Knives Out 2' Coulda Been Big BO if Netflix Had Let It

2022-11-30 Thread Mark Jeffries
"Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" ended its one-week "sneak preview" run
in 600 theaters yesterday--Netflix, more concerned about the home viewers
who will watch it starting Dec. 23, did not report box office receipts but
many experts believe that it will come in third for Thanksgiving weekend
after "Black Panther 2" ($64M) and Disney's cartoon "Strange World"
($18.6M, considered a flop based on budget and has already been announced
as going on Disney+ during the holidays) with $13M and could've made
$45-50M if given a wide release (for comparison, Spielberg's "The
Fabelmans" only pulled $3.1M from roughly the same number of screens and is
supposedly going to VOD next week and probably to Peacock in time for Oscar
season):

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/glass-onion-knives-out-box-office-mystery-1235270204/

I have heard somewhere that Netflix will reissue "Knives Out 2" to theaters
on Christmas weekend.

[TV orNotTV] FTC, 7 States Ding Google and iHeart for Pixel 4 Phony Endorsement Ads

2022-11-29 Thread Mark Jeffries
The dominant radio group aired 29,000 ads where their personalities
endorsed Google's new smartphone--unfortunately for them, none of those
jocks ever got the phone--Google and IHR are paying $9.4M in penalties:

https://www.reuters.com/technology/us-ftc-sues-google-iheartmedia-alleged-deceptive-ads-promoting-pixel-4-2022-11-28/?utm_source=substack_medium=email

The link above doesn't say if any of IHR's national personalities (like
Seacrest, Bobby Bones, Delilah, Hannity, Beck) were involved with these
phony ads.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Mark Burnett leaving MGM

2022-11-29 Thread Mark Jeffries
Perhaps those incriminating "Apprentice" outtakes will now see the light of
day.

As the link states, the main problem with Burnett at MGM was that he was
unable to come up with anything as successful as his previous shows--and he
had no interest in the scripted prestige shows. More importantly, all of
his other shows that came to MGM have other owners involved--because they
were all formats created by others ("Apprentice"--and his first show for
Discovery, "Eco-Challenge"--were the only hits that he created--and of
course, Trump owns part of "Apprentice"). His other main interests were
all those Biblical-themed scripted shows he was doing for cable and the
Light TV subchannel of family programming--the former shows didn't bring in
the numbers or got lost in cable's removal from scripted as streaming came
along and he ended up selling Light to Byron Allen--it's now Grio,
competing with Scripps' Bounce for Black audiences.

[TV orNotTV] Welcome Back Bob--Disney Hit with Antitrust Class Action Suit

2022-11-24 Thread Mark Jeffries
Just as Bob Iger has returned to Disney, the company's been hit with a
class action lawsuit accusing them of using their controlling interest of
Hulu and its Hulu + LIve TV tier (after they bought out most of
20th-Century Fox from Rupert Murdoch) forcing skyrocketing subscription
fees for live streamers of cable channels like Sling and YouTube Live by
requiring that the ESPN channels be included on the lowest tier of
programming, whether or not people want the Worldwide Leader:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/disney-antitrust-suit-live-streaming-tv-prices-1235268605/

Which is similar to how Disney helped to jack up cable TV subscriber fees
and start this whole business of cord-cutting that has endangered cable
television.
