[Bug 783582] Re: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all
Exactly the same problem as Mark Baas on an Acer 3830T. Actually before update to kernel 3.0.13, I had sound by compiling the latest alsa-driver snapshots. After 3.0.13, I had no sound at all even with compilation of the snapshot. I never use suspend, so I did'nt bump into this fix. But when I saw that comment I tried and this worked. So I guess something went wrong somewhere. Probably the suspend trick worked with 3.0.12, but there installation of alsa-driver compiled with --enable-dynamic-minors --without-oss worked better as a fix (no need to suspend). I also tried unloading and reloading the dirver without suspend and this does'nt work... I think the fix-released status is confusing since the fix does not work ! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/783582 Title: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/783582/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Update on my problems; on further inspection the driver is probably not the reason why the speakers do not work. I rebooted into Windows, and I had the same problem there. I'm sure this will all be sorted out sooner or later. In the meantime, I'm putting this here for the benefit of other users with the same problem. Note: I'm using Lucid, and I tried this with the 2.6.32-21 and 2.6.32-33 kernals. Get the latest Alsa driver snapshot from here: ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/snapshot/ 2. Extract the zip file 3. Open a terminal 4. Navigate to the extracted folder 5. Type: ./configure --enable-dynamic-minors 6. Type: make 7. Type: sudo make install-modules 8. Reboot Your headphones will now work properly and the solution survives a reboot. If you can test his patch and confirm that it works, he will apply it to the 3.0 kernel and so it will be fixed in Oneiric. Can you please do that? Test instructions: 1) Make sure no other workarounds (such as the manual hda-verb, dkms och alsa-drivers) 2) Download and install http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-hda-dkms-acer3830tg_0.1_all.deb - this is a new version of the package, updated today. 3) Reboot and test. Thanks! Re: [Bug 783582] Re: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all
I think I'm no longer the best test subject, as I speedily had to upgrade to a oneiric kernel (ubuntu rc4) to have stable wifi before leaving for vacation (I'm literally testing this while lying beside the pool). But on that kernel, I tested anyway, and it does not seem to make a difference. I still have to resort to manually setting the EAPD pin with the hda_analyzer tool before I get any sound. [Bug 783582] Re: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all
The new alsa-hda-dkms works for me, as it is no longer necessary to turn on EAPD @ 0x1b at every reboot. Both speakers and internal mic work; mic's quality is still bad, but it is usable. I wonder if this is a hardware problem (it shouldn't be). The bad news is that headphones do not work anymore: plugging them in, the speakers will be muted, but i will get no sound from the headphones either. I could not try any external mic so far. Thanks for the work, a patch already included in the new kernels would be lovely! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/783582 Title: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/783582/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 783582] Re: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all
Thank You for this solution. On my Acer Aspire 3830TG with Ubuntu 10.10 I have installed alsa, then snd-hda-tools_0.20100606-0~ppa3_amd64.deb and run hda_analizer, check EAPD on pin 0x1b. But after restart I need to check it again. I think this is better than without sound :) If I plug in external sound I have internal and external speakers working together. To switch off internal speaker I need to uncheck OUT on pin 0x1f. This is not a problem :) The problem is that both internal and external mics don't work. [Bug 783582] Re: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all
Thanks for explanation David. I used the HDA_Analizer workout, but it is not completely satisfying: at first, sound comes out from the speakers, but after a couple of reboots it won't anymore, randomly. Plus, i have had a weird experience: I selected, on the audio settings panel, the hdmi output + analog input hardware set. The input tab recognized a mic, so i tried to record some sound, but could not hear the result, because the speakers were not working (no channels were muted in alsamixer!). Changing the hardware set to analog output, i had no mic working, but i could check my record and it had actually recorded my voice. There was no external mic plugged, and i had just used the HDA_Analizer tool. I felt so near to the solution, the problem would then be just enabling HDMI audio output... Too bad I can't rerun this test: i did it yesterday, and today the audio settings tab won't detect any mic in any hardware set, I can't understand why. Shame. Anyway, I will keep trying. I really hope someone of you can find a working solution soon... I am here ready to test anything you need to test, but sadly I'm not so good to find a solution on my own. HDMI audio is a separate bug. So, I would like to check that the only thing that's wrong is actually the EAPD pin. So, if you're happy to keep testing, could you please verify this: 1) In hda-jack-sense-test, also check that the headphone is at node 0x19 2) That if my patch/package is installed and the EAPD pin is activated, that auto-mute (between headphone and internal speaker) is working, and also that autoswitch (between internal and external mic) is working. 3) In hda-analyzer, unclicking the OUT checkbox on node 0x1f will cause the internal speaker to stop working. @physe, Okay, thanks for testing! This means they have borrowed the EAPD pin from node 0x1b to use for the internal speaker. This is annoying, as there is currently no quirk system for this yet. what does that Black Mic tag stand for? BIOS tells us that there is a Mic Jack on this pin, and the physical jack is colored black. And why does my INTERNAL mic NOT get recognized? Are you talking about the output from hda-jack-sense-test? [Bug 783582] Re: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all
@David, I tested both without and with headphones plugged in and got no sounds in either. There were activity on the microphone input, but I wasn't able to demonstrate to myself that the activity was due to input from the mic (I made some sounds which didn't seem to register in any special way), or just static from some internal amplifiers (or whatever, not my knowledge domain). FWIW, my 3830T works fine with the patch and setting EAPD as described in #38. Also switches automatically between speakers and minijack when I plug in headphones. I have only tested mic by blowing air and whistling toward where the camera is and elsewere, and do not have a mic to plug in, but based on my blowing and whistling it does not seem to pick up any sound. I've tried switching between analog microphone and internal microphone in the mixer, and with analog microphone (and me not pluggin in a mic) and then it goes complete silent (indicator stops moving). With analog microphone active, it jumps around, but I do not seem to be able to affect it much by blowing and whisteling.

This is really strange to me, I can not explain why it works now. [Bug 783582] Re: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all
Great that most people seem to have solved the problem by enabling EAPD on node 0x1b. However, in the only codec report I've got so far, node 0x1b doesn't say it's the internal speaker, but external mic (and this is why my previous patch attempt did not work, btw). Before I try to make a patch and send it upstream, I need more confirmation whether node 0x1b is actually the external mic pin or not. I've made a small utility to test what pins actually corresponds to jacks, so could someone please try the following: 0) ensure it has been 6 hours since this post was written as packages are currently waiting to be built :-( 1) download and install snd-hda-tools from ppa:diwic/ppa 2) run sudo hda-jack-sense-test -a both with mic plugged into the mic jack, then without something plugged in. By reading the output of this tool you should be able to figure out which pins are truly the mic and headphone pins. Confirmed too on a Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG running Ubuntu 11.04 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/783582 Title: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/783582/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 783582] Re: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all
Confrimed here as well, Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830T running Ubuntu 11.04. Also brightness/backlight control widget works (slider slides up and down), but does not affect actual brightness/backlight, but that's certainly another bug report..
[Bug 783582] Re: [Aspire 3830TG, Conexant ID 506c, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all
Howdy! Could you help me test a possible solution by doing this: 1) make sure you don't have any alsa drivers installed, i e if you run modinfo snd-hda-codec the Filename line should not say anything with updates in it. 2) Download and install http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-hda-dkms-acer3830tg_0.1_all.deb 3) Reboot and test. Test all inputs and outputs and report back whether the issue is now fixed or not.
