What I need is a way to allow comments on a site that isn't a blog. I tried Haloscan (which Jay pointed me to a while ago), but it was a bit laborious to add code into every page I wanted comments on, and at some point it seems to have stopped working (all my comments disappeared) for reasons which I haven't had time to investigate.

Re: [videoblogging] Spam and such...

2006-02-11 Thread Michael Meiser

I agree with Sull If you have something to share... and you want to share it with other vloggers even if you did share it with the world on your vlog you can still share it here, by all means.Use your judgement... here's my litmus test.  If you're just posting to say "look at this" you've maybe started to cross the line... but if you've got question or any point whatsoever then your probably fine.Pardon, I just had to email about my latest video post to my blog... it was technicaly a video to my mom, but i had a question on the quality of the audio.  Heh, I thought you guys might like to see this special sequence I did such and such thing, the graphic effect came out really neat or I shot some footage of the protests in San Fran yesterday, and though some of you might be interested in it because...My point is that if you've got a point, if you have someone in mind and your addressing... there's no problem with "self promotion"... because it's not self promotion, we talk about what we love, it's natural for that to be the things we're working on. It's only "self promotion" when it ceases to have any point other than promotion. So, post away.Besides, I've managed to skip 22,510 posts to this group since I started reading it, I think i can skip any such email that doesn't interest me. :PPeace,-Mike On Feb 10, 2006, at 4:35 PM, Michael Sullivan wrote: who said it was spam?On 2/10/06, Ron Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I recently sent off a Shameless Self Promotion note to this list. If you think it was read on and let's discuss this.  I wanted people from this list to see the piece, as I was proud of it. It was a project instead of a simple vlog entry. I guess I am not allowed to do that because it is spamming.  I might be out of line her; misunderstanding something, or maybe I didn't read the rules, but isn't that a problem? Aren't we on here to talk about vlogging? To share our stuff with eachother, not just the technical mumbo-jumbo, or philosophical concepts, but the stuff that we do.  There are 5345 vlogs listed in mefeedia these days. How do we get people to see things that we feel are good pieces if we are not community celebrities? This list alone occupies a good deal of time for all of us daily. Most of it is stuff that I am not really interested in. Is that spam? How can I keep in touch with this list and get to see new faces and ideas in the vlogging world. Somebody has to tell me, as I am very busy with my own stuff, as I am sure all of you are as well.  My point is that if we cannot send an email to this list asking for others that are doing the same things as we are, only totally different, to check it out and comment on it, what good is this list? I have posted about 30 videos, I think I have asked the list to check out this one, that's it. Why? Because I thought it was pretty good. It was edited from 5 hours of video, the project is 40 gb. There are several really nice shots, from a cinematographic standpoint. I really wanted to get some feedback from it.  As I said before, I might be out of line here, totally missing the point about spamming. If that note that I sent asking people to check out a piece of mine that I worked hard on, and thought was good, was spam, then I think that is a problem with this list.  On Feb 10, 2006, at 12:59 PM, Rachel Knight wrote: Introvert, although I can deal with people in a work situation, but social situations leave me fatigued and scared.  Too many people, human beings scare me, lol.  Give me cats any day.  Yes, I have noticed the tendency towards insanity in vloggers.     I'm glad you are doing this research, it is the kind of thing I would like to do, I would like to know the results when you get them, along with statistical significance etc.  If it works, I might try a bit of at home research I have always wanted to do and see if I can find anything significant in that.   Rachel (Alternative Kitten)On 10 Feb 2006, at 16:09, Stephanie Bryant wrote: I'm curious: How many of you are introverts, and how many are extroverts? I'm not that familiar with WP so I don't know where the password is
stored, this is just a tip off the top of my head...

Find out where the password is stored. If it's stored in the database
you'll need to login to the database (either via command line, SSH
perhaps, or phpMyAdmin I think DH provides this tool) and use a SQL
directive to change it (since it's probably stored in an encryped
way).

If it's stored in a flat file somewhere (i doubt it), then just FTP in
and change it there.

You probably need to check that the database configuration file for WP
still has the proper values as well. I'm not certain the name of the
file where this config is set, maybe wp-config.php ??

Good luck

Wordpress stores login passwords in a database table (usually mysql.)
You can use dreamhosts utility for modifying your data tables to
change the password. For more information check the Wordpress Codex
pages, http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page, and the mysql
documentation, http://dev.mysql.com/doc/ .

[videoblogging] Why Not Use .MP4?

2006-02-11 Thread Michael Verdi

So I'm thinking about iPod compatibility and the easiest way to make a good iPod compatible video using H.264 seems to be to export as an .MP4. You have control over the bit rate, single or dual pass, audio settings, etc. The files seem to fast start for me on Mac and PC. Now the .MP4 can't do all the cool QuickTime things like HREF tracks, text tracks, etc. but you can always use QuickTime Pro to save as an .mov and add those things if you want. Is there something I'm missing? Are there widespread server mime type problems with .mp4? Steve Watkins will probably want to scream because he's been saying this for about a year but, Steve, I'd appreciate your thoughts on this subject again.
So who out there has been doing this? What's your experience been? I've noticed that Bill Streeter sometimes uses it but not always - what's up with that Bill? Thanks,VerdiPS - It appears that Apple has fixed the export to iPod thing if you access it in iMovie from the Share menu. If you access it from File Export in iMovie or QuickTime Pro you still get that dammed 320 X 213 video!

Re: [videoblogging] Why Not Use .MP4?

I think mp4 is the way forward. The reason is that it's a pretty open format: it doesn't only play on the iPod, but with a bit of luck on the PSP and other devices too.I always feel it's better to have 1 format that's more generically usable, than lots of highly optimized, specific formats that don't play everywhere..

On a related topic, do you still have the PDF on dual pass encoding on
3ivx available on a site? If so, where is it located again?

It's still the best method I found for encoding using the 3ivx
workaround for Quicktime 7.

Re: [videoblogging] Why Not Use .MP4?

What, specifically, is the difference between iPod mp4 and PSP mp4?

I noticed h.264/AAC exported out of Vegas plays in QT offline, but not
embedded online - I don't
have a G5 iPod to test it on.

Many DIV-X enabled DVD players will run mp4 including h.264 but, unfortunately
not AAC.

Will iPods/PSP's run mp4 with mp3 audio component?

joly

I think mp4 is the way forward. The reason is that it's a pretty open format:
it doesn't only play on the iPod, but with a bit of luck on the PSP and other
devices too.

I always feel it's better to have 1 format that's more generically usable,
than lots of highly optimized, specific formats that don't play everywhere..

I don't know about PSP but the iPod will only play files with AAC audio. MP3 audio in a video file will not work on an iPod.Do you have a link to that embeded qt file that won't play? I don't understand what would make it play locally and not from the web.

You're welcome. :)

I think you'd need to check with dreamhost if they have a backup. I'm
not familiar with hardening Wordpress/mysql access -- some of it would
depend on how easy it is to guess someone's password, some on the
encryption method in mysql to store the password, etc. You may want
to search on hardening, mysql and wordpress and see if any
useful links come up.

[videoblogging] Re: Why Not Use .MP4?

2006-02-11 Thread Steve Watkins
Yes you are correct, to play on the PSP there needs to be some
modification to the mp4 file, to include an atom structure that is
compatible with PSP. The various programs that are available to
speficially do PSP encodes know this, and have worked out how to do
it. Luckily it doesnt seem to interfere with the ability of the mpeg4
to playback on ipod or quicktime etc.

So it is possible to create an mpeg4 that plays on both. The same is
not true of h264 though, because the PSP uses main profile h264,
wheras the ipod uses baseline. There is a chance the PSP could be made
to play baseline too, but I hack suitable software to take a ipod
baseline h264 and add the sony psp atom structure to it, for testing
purposes.

There are loads of other slight differences between psp and ipod spec,
such as slightly different maximum resolutions of mpeg4, maximum
bitrate etc, but the typical 320x240 stuff can be made to work subject
to the above advice.

I'll asnswer the other mpeg4 issues as best I can shortly.

Cheers

From speaking with Mary, yes they do have a quote/remix tool in the works.
Not sure how similar it will be to MeFeedia's version of that feature.
My personal opinion is that it still remains to be seen if people
actually would use such a tool. Quotes are nice (i certainly like
media in smaller chunks), but actually making the quotes requires a
high level of investment for the user, not to mention that much of the
content out there today doesn't really lend itself to being quoted
easily.

[videoblogging] Re: Why Not Use .MP4?

2006-02-11 Thread Steve Watkins
It plays for me on firefox with Mac and QT 7, in the browser window,
but it doesnt fast start, so it takes a long time before it works. Is
this the problem you mean? Most of these alternative mpeg4 h264
encoders are not thinkign about fast-start when they are written. A
few will probably work (eg I think elecard mobile converter on PC
does) but Quicktime remains the safest bet for creating fast-start mp4's.

It wont work on the ipod because the vegas export will be making main
profile h264 files, not the baseline that the ipod needs.

[videoblogging] Re: Why Not Use .MP4?

2006-02-11 Thread ecomputerd
Michael,

My theory is that H.264 takes up more battery power for a given
quality level. I know that up until recently, Pocket PCs have had
difficulty playing high-bitrate H.264. And even the iPod maximum
bitrate playback is lower for H.264 than it is for 3ivx, for
example. With 30G or 60G iPod, battery is more of a concern than
disk space. No one has taken up my suggestion to actually run a
comparison on this (
http://groups.google.com/group/videoblogging/browse_thread/thread/570
863cedd357f06/d4293c55fd4b0534?
lnk=stq=h.264+battery+ecomputerdrnum=1hl=en#d4293c55fd4b0534 )

Based on my observations that H.264 takes up more CPU than 3ivx, my
presumption is that it also takes more battery power.

Unfortunately, no one has ever confirmed (to my knowledge) whether
iPod can decode mp3 audio on a 3ivx-encoded video, so at this point
my recommendation has been 3ivx/AAC (even thought AAC if decoded
legally requires licensing payments by the author of the player to
the licensing agency). I've written briefly about that here:
http://feederreader.pocketcasting.com/viewtopic.php?p=1417#1417

On desktops and in living rooms, where the decoding machine is
plugged into the wall, I suspect H.264 widescreen at 720p or 1080i
will be completely appropriate. I'm not sure of the minimum machine
required to decode H.264 at that resolution. I'd love to see if a
2GHz MCE HTPC or an Apple Mini can decode a full-resolution HDTV-
quality H.264 bitstream.

A file ending in .mp4 doesnt tell us whether its a mpeg4 or h264 file,
but .m4v files are h264 only (unless someone renames a mpeg4 .mp4 to
.m4v but thats cheating)

Which is the better camera for vlogging? Or are both overkill?

And can Premiere Pro handle editing hi-def from the HC1?

Discuss.

[videoblogging] Re: Why Not Use .MP4?

2006-02-11 Thread Steve Watkins
h264 certainly uses more cpu for playback than older mpeg4.

The ipod must use a decoder chip to play h264, rather than a cpu, so
effect on battery could be quite different to h264s effect on a laptop
battery (eg maybe little or no difference on ipod if chip doesnt draw
more power when decoding h264). This stuff is also why the decoder
chip and thus the ipod can handle older mpeg4 at a higher resolution
that h264 (though which is the best quality can be debated due to more
noticable compression artifacts/macroblocks with older mpeg4).

Regarding High definition playback, I need to re-test but I believe
720P h264 struggles to playback at full framerate on the faster of the
2 current Mac Mini's. I expect when an Intel Mac Mini comes out, it
will be up to the job. As Ive said in the past, quicktime isnt the
most efficient decoder, a better framerate will likely be obtained
using VLC as the player instead. Meanwhile on the PC, CPU has been
faster than most Macs, but quicktime playback poor, so advice about
using a differet player stil applies. Nero is one example of a much
better h264 decoder, in terms of CPU use, last time I tested anyway.

h264 is a strong contender for high definition stuff, such resolutions
will require farily good computers anyway, and it will take a while
for this stuff to go fully mainstream. But older mpeg4 that has been
improved (eg by using advanced profile or other extras) is also quite
good, DivX would be a good example of this and is a contender.

[videoblogging] Re: Why Not Use .MP4?

2006-02-11 Thread Steve Watkins
Oh dear, I think you are right. I just had a few goes and it didnt
work. It works ok if you dont use h264.

I dunno if its an Apple mistake or if there is any wayround this
problem. I have a suspicion Apple may have done it deliberately, to
maek sure people use the ipod export option, and thus propagate that
darn .m4v extension. Why do they always seem to take something away
when they give us something new? I like the ipod conversion built into
itunes but arghghg @ apple.

Ive not had much time at all recently, but I will try to see if theres
much on the internet about this issue. All these problems make
alternatives to quicktime for encoding more interesting. However Im
not sure things like iSquint have got the mpeg4 licencing stuff to be
completely legitimate, dont know if that affects what advise you
should put in a book.

Anyway thanks for bringing up the .mp4 topic. Much of the discussion
seems hto have gone back to h264 issues again, which are not strictly
speaking related to the .mp4 format, oh you know how it is by now, all
this detail makes simple advice hard to do sometimes.

Mimetype issue will complicate things for some people getting into
videoblogging and using their own servers. Most video hosting serives
should be .mp4 sroted by now, some will be sorted for .m4v too. But
many shared dedicated webservers are probably still given to the
customer with only older formats such as .mov in the mimetype config,
requiring some fiddling.

Likewise issues with people using things like Wordpress, Drupal etc.
Its not hard at all for developers to add .mp4 support to a system
that already handles mov and enclosures, its just that such a low
proportion of users of these systems do video, that progress on this
front can be overlooked for ages. Im out of date with wordpress, not
tried version 2 yet, but Im saddened that Drupal hasnt got their media
support module(s) very mature yet.

I'll probably take a week off work soon and will try to update myself
on all these issues, as I do want to get round to videoblogging one of
these days.

Other stuff Ive said to this list about mp4 in recent times has mostly
been bemoaning a lack of progress in terms of the theoeritcal reaons
to use .mp4 instead of .mov coming to fruition. Progress on
alternative encoders ahs been good, but lack of alternative plugin for
browser playback means that people are still tied to quicktime, wheras
a beauty of .mp4 should be that people who hate quicktime can avoid
it altogether. Right not they can, but not if they want to see video
in the browser. DivX browser plugin is good but wont help us as their
use of mpeg4 uses .avi (or .divx) container not .mp4.

Cheers

No Im not saying things are quite that bad/changed that much,
thankfully. The implication of what youve found with handbrake is that
theyve changed which type will play on the ipod, either by doing
something to itunes of ipod firmware.

But I just encoded some H264 using iSquint 1.2, and it still copies
onto the ipod via itunes ok, so I doubt theyve goe down that path, too
much of a auser backlash.

Based on your earlier post and my test, I assumed theyve changed
something in the way quicktime 704 encodes baseline h264 in mpeg4
export mode, as opposed to changeing itunes or ipod compatibility
detection. So this means you can only make ipod compatible h264 using
quicktime 7.0.4 if you use export to ipod option. But you can still
use non-quicktime h264 encoders to make baseline h264 that plays on ipod.

This new complication is still emerging, I may be wrong about
something above, need more testing. Are you sure there isnt something
else in your handbrake encoding process that has caused you to end up
with a file that doesnt work?

On the good news front, I see iSquint 1.2 creates fast-start mp4's :)

I just tried iSquint - that's a fantastic solution for Mac users. You can set the bit rate for the video and the audio - fast start works, syncs to iPod. Fast started in Firefox on my PC. So, is iSquint doing the encoding without using the Quicktime software that's built in to the OS? Why would Quicktime be unable to do this?

The situation where it's too much work for the average user to do
something is a pretty common pattern in net software. There is
sometimes a workaround: design your application to magnify the impact
of the few people who do do the work.

CDDB is an example of that workaround. Most people didn't type in
song titles, but the few who did had a huge impact.

In this case that might mean spotlighting any quote that somebody did
bother to make, and make it easy to copy and reblog.

[videoblogging] Re: Why Not Use .MP4?

2006-02-11 Thread Steve Watkins
Yes iSquint uses a different encoder. ffmpeg, which is I believe what
handbrake uses too. There are PC Windows and Linux apps which use such
encoders too, most of these softwares are about providing a GUI for
one or more opensource encoders, and feeding the right parameters to
those encoders. So some PSP encoding apps might be using just the same
encoder, ust with different settings.

They were mostly all faster than quicktimes h264 encoding, but in
quicktime 7.0.4 apple speeded things up a lot, so they may be
slowerthan quicktime under certain conditions now.

From a legal point of view, such programs and encoders ahve probably
ignored any patent etc issues, not bothered with mpeg4 or h264
licencing, in theory thats probably not good but in practise nothing
much has happened yet as a result.

Not 100% sure what you mean by why would quicktime be unable to do
this. If you mean why cant quicktime create h264 mp4 that works o ipod
now, well it used to work, so the either made error or did it
deliberately as discussed earlier. If you mean why would isquint
others use their own encoder rather than apples, well because of
either better documentation, performance, quality, speed of encoders,
or because the developers arent into quicktime development or other
reasons.

I just tried iSquint - that's a fantastic solution for Mac users.
You can
set the bit rate for the video and the audio - fast start works,
syncs to
iPod. Fast started in Firefox on my PC.
So, is iSquint doing the encoding without using the Quicktime software
that's built in to the OS? Why would Quicktime be unable to do this?

But you can still
use non-quicktime h264 encoders to make baseline h264 that plays
on ipod.

This new complication is still emerging, I may be wrong about
something above, need more testing. Are you sure there isnt something
else in your handbrake encoding process that has caused you to end up
with a file that doesnt work?

On the good news front, I see iSquint 1.2 creates fast-start mp4's :)

Oh dear, I think you are right. I just had a few goes and it didnt

I dunno if its an Apple mistake or if there is any wayround this
problem. I have a suspicion Apple may have done it
deliberately, to
maek sure people use the ipod export option, and thus
propagate that
darn .m4v extension. Why do they always seem to take something
away
when they give us something new? I like the ipod conversion
built into
itunes but arghghg @ apple.

Apparently the hosting service for blip is maxed out. I'm not using
deduction here, one of my partners was in contact with them and they
say that blip is sucking up their resources big time.
