Re: [videoblogging] Trying to get back in the saddle

2005-08-14 Thread Brett Gaylor

Thanks for taking the time, Randolfe, and for your comments. I can see why you don't produce films on a regular basis.  Obviously, your creations involve a lot of time, work and expense.  I think you succeed much more than most.  However, isn't it better to produce more for others to see instead of a "real masterpiece" every year or so.Well, yeah, thats the idea:  make more, be prolific, rather than the every few years or so as you noticed.  As soon as blogging came around, and people were writing every day, I thought "I wonder if I could discipline myself to extend this to my work, to make a video every couple of days"?  I didn't actually get around to doing it (for boring reasons), but then I discovered that other people WERE with videoblogging, so I thought I'd try and pick up the gauntlet a bit and throw myself into it.  But I have to admit I've found it hard, and I kind of sucked at it sustainability-wise, which is why I responded to the orignal "how do you make time for this" thread...The other part of your question, to produce for others, is another part of what I'm fiiguring out.  This videoblogging thing is instant, and lots of people see it (or at least have the potential)...a far cry from the other short films I've made.  Its made me think about audience a lot more... I find it kind of weird, because in videoblogging (at leas the kind that I respond to), you're showing your life.  So, in a weird sense, you're asking people "do you like me?" .  Which I haven't really reconciled - not something I've generally dealt with in defence of my work.  I think I'll only get good at it when I let go of that... I guess the question is: "How do we balance 'quality' and 'quantity'?"Well, as astute videobloggers have noted, this seems to be the wrong question.  Perhaps the "quality" is in the "quantity", the long tail that we are all building together is "the work", and that we all have to do our part to participate in it... and thats why I want to give it another shot.  I find this to be an inspiring concept.  I'm a little boozy here, sorry if this sounds a little fruity, I just got back from a night out...must say it was weird to step out into real life after a solid day in this videoblogging world...it was like I was walking through a movie.  odd.  Anyway, I'm pressing send even though this is a kind of a retarded post...blarg.PS would love to hear your critique of enduser, haven't thought about that film in a whileemail me off list and we'll shoot the shit.b

2005-08-14 Thread Siobhan Ramsey

Hi Shel

I missed the page you posted here, thanks.  I use
Mambo for my sites, this is really interesting. How
did you create the table? Did you use one of the mambo
editers?  Also how did you get the video into the rows
and columns?  Did you simply turn off the editer and
place the code into the table?  I have bought mosmedia
 which
is supposed to place videos in the page but the issue
for me if how I can create a nice rows and columns
layout ideally as thumb nails. I am not sure how to
combine this with mefeedia..? which creates a thumnail
archive via RSS.

The videos on my home site are played within the
webpage using the
"embed" command.  I use pop-up windows to show the
videos.

With Mambo, you create a static content page, then
insert html code
you create using any editor program.  To create my
video page:
http://www.icenrye.com/newsite/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=4&Itemid=26
I created a blank page with Mambo, then copied the
table code from my
old page: http://www.icenrye.com/videopage.htm.  Mambo
did the rest
and made it look pretty.

[Knew it. Knew all along Richard was CIA. Ya know, they send those guys for

I've been trying to figure out an answer to this question since the topic
came up.

If the question is (don't lost the question): Do you have some hidden agenda
that affects your presence in the vlogosphere? My answer - beyond a pressing
need to better learn to create moving pictures / sound and grow an
audience - is, "No."

I freelance and actually take a great risk posting vids taken at work but
I'm as passionate about the income-producing technical work as I am the art
and @ center, there's no difference between one and the other. Suspect I've
lost one job directly related to videoblogging, but that was bottom line a
good thing, psychologically if not fiscally. Like my grannie says, "Screw
'em if they can't take a joke."

Siobhan,

Here's a trick: find a page you like? View the source code.

View --> Source Code

In that way you'll begin to understand html, too.

They are both squirley. I have to use FireFox to edit HTML in my Blogger brand blogs. But I think Safari is faster. Sometimes things work in one and not the other. Sometimes the HTML code of the new sites is not behaving properly. This is particularly true at Blip.tv (beta) - they don't call it Beta for nothin' - and at ourmedia.org where the graphics and buttons plain outright never appear in one or the other but htey don't call it beta - cause it's more like Alpha over there. The Blip.tv html editor is so bad I had to stop going there. Too many random curser flip outs. I'm giving them a week to get their act together. Then I'll try again. I like their overall setup. But not the html wild wild text.Loved your reply to Randolfe. Wow. Happy Birthday Jason,How young did you just become? Your videos are AWESOME!! Nice pants. You need to add to your email signature.I want to know what setting difference you have that lets your playable video appear in your RSS feed.Mine only shows text and you must go to my site to see any video images that you can then play. I must have put on the truncate without links thingy or I don't remember which setting i got wrong. Any help? All my videos in iTunes via the add from advanced menu item play without sound. But at the site they play just fine. Did I blow a FeedBurner setting somewhere? Was it the one that kills all links? But if that was it then why does the video play at all? What a bummer to discover how to get on iTunes only to be MUTE!!This is the MUTE videographer signing OFF. Over and well all my sound is definitely OUT.How do I get my sound IN? My Videos Audio PLAY in Quicktime Player NOT in Column Preview NOR
iTunes Player

I went into my iTunes folder to find the videos I had downloaded from
the RSS Feed Subscription Feature in the Advanced Menu. I tried to
play them in Preview still with NO AUDIO. double click on them they
launch in QuickTime player where they play perfectly WITH SOUND!

So it appears that column view Preview play  AND video playback in
iTunes are NOT H.264 Compatible.

How's that for a Press Release???

[videoblogging] My iTunes and Preview Play my video MUTE

2005-08-14 Thread Kunga

I just did a new install of Tiger on a 700 MHz Flat Panel iMac G4 and
my video is playing perfectly with sound in iTunes 4.9 Syndicated
Podcast page - note the RED Explicit attention boxes. I am also at
the top of your Podcast list as a result of using Option + 8 + Space
in front of the Blog Title. These are a couple of tricks I learned
from the Sex and Podcasting Guru Mike O'Connor .

Playing with sound looking good under Panther 10.3.9 and QuickTime
6.5 (not 6.5.2). So H.264 playback capability has been in QT longer
than I was led to believe by your guys.

Now they play in my Tiger 10.4.2 with sound that didn't before.

Could I please have the perfect compression recipe Michael? I've lost
track of it all. But I would like to keep it down to 2-3 MB a minute
if that's ok with you. I am totally on Jan's side about the need to
keep it all small.

That Canter piece is over 5MB a minute which I consider unacceptably
large.

And what's up with the downloads that are FAKE? You see the download
happen and at the end it didn't happen and nothing plays and it
disappears from the folder in the iTunes' Podcast FutureMedia folder.
Is that a server issue at the archive.org or at Blip.tv or at
ourmedia.org? Progress bar slides as if it's coming down then nothing
stays down - poof it's gone.

Glitchy Glitchy Glitchy    but I'm not bitchy bitchy
bitchy    no I wait for answers.

[videoblogging] Re: My iTunes and Preview Play my video MUTE

2005-08-14 Thread Steve Watkins

Dont know whats going on there, H264 should not playback unless you
have QT7. It certainly wasnt misguided info from anyone here, Apple
themselves have made a big deal of H264 being new with QT7.

You sure the video you tried on 10.3.9 with QT 6.5 was definately H264?

As for the 'fake downloads' problem, what do those videos look like in
the podcasting window of itunes - any icons next to them? In the past
I have had a few failed downloads, mostly due to temporary server
problems, but I think it shows me an icon next to the relevant
entries, and clicking on it provides more info, cant quite remember.

Sound worked fine on your videos for me in Itunes 4.9 on 10.4.2

Cheers

Re: [videoblogging] My iTunes and Preview Play my video MUTE

2005-08-14 Thread Michael Verdi

Hey Kunga,
You can follow the tutorial at Freevlog - http://freevlog.org/
#compress - look at the iMovie one because it uses QT 7.  If you
don't want 5MB/min videos just lower the data rate to about 200kbits/
sec and make the video dimensions smaller - 240 X 180.  I think this
produces generally crappy looking video but some people are more
concerned about file size.  I think if you just keep your videos to
less than 5 minutes and use the higher data rate you be fine.  Your
videos will be under 20MB.

[videoblogging] iTunes 1-click subscribe

2005-08-14 Thread petertheman

> Holy iTunes Sub Batman !!!  I had no idea you could add a NON-Listed

Yes, iTunes can play pretty much any feed with Quicktime or audio
enclosures.

And check this:
http://mefeedia.com/help/_javascript_/itunes.php

A new feature :)

Following the instructions on that page, you can add a 1-click
subscribe button for your vlog to your website. If someone clicks it,
iTunes will open up and they'll be automagically subscribed, *even* if
you're not listed in the directory.

You actually need 2 buttons, 1 for PC and 1 for Mac (iTunes sucks like
that), the page explains it all.

If your videos don't show up in iTunes it's probably because
a) you don't do Quicktime videos
b) your feed doesn't use enclosures

Let me know if you have any questions. Hope you like it :)

Does anyone know if there is a tool anywhere that will alert people
(who want to be alerted) when your Blogger vlog has been updated/added

somewhere and whenever you post a new vlog they would be emailed?
Does such a thing exist and would one ever want to use such a thing?

Not sure about Blogger, but MovableType (and probably TypePad) have

I agree with Jan.  There seems to be a very
special quality of openness and cooperation and excitement among
vloggers.

Making money out of what passionately involves you
far too frequently involves what I call "prostitution of the soul".  I was
a professional writer for several years.  I finally resolved to go into
retailing and to only use my writing skill in a manner which pleased
me.

My "last" professional writing assignment was to go
down to a bank and write a story about "how the bank communicated to its new
employees that it was genuinely concerned about his or her welfare".  Doing
that made me want to puke.  I would rather shine shoes for passers-by on a
street corner than slave away writing something I really disliked.

Art is most enjoyable when it is not exploited for
commercial gain.

The archive Mefeedia builds is (techie talk) just a list of links,
images with stylesheets.

I had a go to copy the style of Michael's archive. What you have to do
is to add this to your stylesheet:

.mefeedia-thumb {
  margin: 25px;
  padding: 5px;
  border: 1px solid #CC;
}

So find your stylesheet file and add the above to it. Then your
archive should look like this:

http://poorbuthappy.com/ease/archives/2005/08/09/2805/video-archive

You can play with it to adjust the distance between pictures, the
color of the grey border and so on.

To do the hover link Michael has, you have to get the nicetitle
_javascript_ and css he has (do view source on his website).

I wrote some more explanation here:

http://mefeedia.com/blog/2005/08/24/

Hope that helps!
Peter

Re: [videoblogging] Sustainable vlogging (time-wise)

2005-08-14 Thread Steve Garfield

I enjoy the editing process.  I like to take time to put the footage,
I've shot together, to tell a story.  What makes videoblogging
interesting and fun to me is the whole process of videoblogging.
Shooting and editing.   Usually I spend a few hours editing.

Videoblogging makes my life more fun.  The whole process of getting out
the camera enhances my experiences with others.  So I'm not taking time
away from anything to shoot, I'm usually just bringing the camera
along.

We're not making TV, but we are making videoblogging.  That can be a
moment showing or it can be a scripted three camera sitcom.  What I
think makes videoblogging unique is that anyone can pick up a camera,
post their video and share their lives.  Josh Leo's recent video about
his trip to the farm was a good example of doing more than just sharing
video of his trip to a farm.
joshleo.blogspot.com/2005/07/scottish-highlands.html

He shared his feelings about the trip both before and after.  So as we
watch more of his videos we really get to know him as a person.

Videoblogging is people.

Time spent videoblogging is time well spent.

QT's interaction with your file system is very limited. You can't write a
virus if you can't make QT handle executables or at least write to the

There is a theory about that kind communication saying that you can only
"seduce" your customers if you yourself has been "seduced". Simply meaning
that you can't "sell" a product without being "sold" yourself first. If
the writing assignment made you want to puke the result will most likely
also make the customers want to puke.

I use Topica on my text blog which is hosted by blogger

when I make a new post to blogger, I have blogger send a message with
the post,  to topica

then, people who have subscribed to my topica list, get the new post in
their email.

Ok.  The buttons are now on my blogspot page.  They look great!
Unfortunately, they don't do a thing!
Here's my stuff:
Box - PC
Browser - Firefox
OS - XP Pro SP2
Itunes - 4.9.0.17
RSS Feed - http://feeds.feedburner.com/icenryevideo
Mefeedia ID - 527
QT - Pro 6.5.2

When I click on my button , iTunes opens, but nothing shows up.  If I
drag the PC link to iTunes, the blog name shows up, but I get an "!"
telling me there's no feed.

The mac link, however, when dragged to iTunes seems to work!

Looking at the code I notice the mac link contains my feedburner link.
So I dragged the feedburner link into iTunes, an voila!  Video.  I'm
guessing the problem is with  this:
http://mefeedia.com/pcast/527.pcast link.

I thought the problem might be my coding, but the link on "Dummycast"
didn't work and I have a link to Michael Verdi's site which also comes
up empty.

On a better note, I've added the archive thumbnail code to my site and
it looks good so far.  A few entries missing, however you mentioned it
will get better in time.  I'm, looking forward to more great stuff
from Mefeedia.

Interesting. I have WinXP, Firefox, and I just tried the Windows
button and it worked great - iTunes is downloading your video as we
speak. Are you sure you clicked the right button (not the mac one)?

I'll look into it. What that link does, is make 1-click subscribe in
iTunes possible on Windows.

Andrew, before I found this group I spent about a
week exploring vlogs on the Internet.  Rocketboom was one of vlogs which
stood out as being sophisticated and professional.

I'm sure you will have a rapidly growing audience
as you continue.  In fact, I suspect you might find yourself "tempted" with
offers from commercial broadcasters very soon.

I noticed you mentioned wanting to have third world
sources for your vlog.  A documentary maker who did a great piece of work
entitled "Book Wars" is now located in Cambodia and attempting to film and
report on indigenous people in that country.  I forwarded your post to
him.  Don't know if he will be interested or not. Just thought the two of
you should be aware of each other's existence. JRE-mail
Address(es):  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think your description of how music became
democratized and enabled musicians to earn a range of income instead of being
made millionaires or left to starve by "gatekeepers" is right on target.
Vlogging is a new art form and method of communication.  Blogs have
exploded to over 14.2 million with 40,000 new ones every day because people now
can publish their writings on the Internet.  I am sure vlogs will increase
very rapidly also.  It's just a question as to "how" money and
commercialization is going to impact vlogging and change it.

First you had the three big networks.  Then
you had cable channels.  Now you have vlogs.  Each one expanded the
opportunities to have yourself seen and heard.

[videoblogging] Toronto meetup first week of October

2005-08-14 Thread Frank Carver

Some of you may remember that I mentioned this a month or two ago. I'm
bringing my wife and kids over to Toronto for a family wedding at the
start of October.

We've now booked our flights, so the dates are a bit more set. The
wedding is on October 1st, and we will be staying in Canada, exploring
the area and the sights and generally available from October 2nd until
we fly out on October 8th.

I would really would love to get together at some point with some
local videobloggers. I'll have a rental car so anywhere within
striking distance of Toronto would probably be OK. If anyone from the
US side is interested in meeting up that would be great too - either
someone crosses over the border, or we can just film each other from
either side of the gorge at Niagara Falls :)

I don't know if I'm going to manage it yet, but I'm also hoping to get
to visit one end or another of the eurovloggercon in Amsterdam - I
think it would be quite cool to carry "virtual wishes" from one group
to another.

If anyone _is_ interested in meeting up, please contact me, and we'll
see what we can work out.

Thanks,

OK now the feeds play with sound in iTunes is still muted video in Column Preview and no my iTunes was not on mute. Nor was my system volume muted. I'd seen the button around but not known the source of it's origin.Still experimenting with Panther 10.3.9 and QT 6.5 to see if my H.264 videos are useless. I am trying another download that looks like it is coming in fine, but heretofore has evaporated after completion. Anyone familiar with that phenomenon?Nope evaporated again. Is it because the absence of an H.264 element in QT 6.5 will cause the downloaded file to turn INVISIBLE? I could see it coming down and even see it grow in size at the file level inside my Podcast folder. Then upon completion POOF! Gone again.Am I populating my iTunes Podcast folder with a set of INVISIBLE H.264 downloads? Will they magically appear once I install QT 7.0.1?OK I get the picture. The vast majority of Mac and Windows users are too LAZY to download and install QT 7. Right? How cool is that? We have to acquiesce to the LAZY MASSES? Not sure if anyone addressed this, as I am catching up on email, working my

I am surprised DailyDancer.com is still up and creating new content. This
site finished #7 in the Contagious Media Showdown ( URL:
http://showdown.contagiousmedia.org/ ). Entrants must create new content
specifically for the contest, so it seems this stunt was thought up for a
competition and has continued on based on popularity and perhaps ad
clicks/DailyDancer.com gear sales.

He got 89,324 unique visitors and 132 Technorati links between 5/19/2005 and
6/9/2005.  Not bad for the first three weeks after launch. Lesson: Gimmicks
work. Nifty.

Blogging infrastructure built over time. We're standing on the
shoulders of giants. Let's not forget that. We're not any more or less
special because we have video in a blog. But, I do think there are
opportunities here to build tools and services that specifically
relate to media publishing/syndication that could eventually set this
apart somewhat from other forms of Blogging while still connecting to
the blogosphere as a whole. This is what we talk about often when we
refer to this as an ecology.

Not quite.

When QT Pro V7 comes out for windows.  I might, that's might, get it.
As of now, i don't need it.  I watch H264 videos with VLC Player.
Works fine.  I use iTunes to subscribe to Diggnation and CommandN

As for encoding, It's either mpeg4 or DivX for my high res stuff.

2005-08-14 Thread David Yirchott

Aside for a permit so as not to obstruct the normal flow of people, another
thing to be careful of is that it is possible to trademark a building or
landmark. For instance, in Chicago all of Millennium Park is trademarked.
Therefore in order to professionally shoot there you need to pay a fee and
get a permit, as well. Casual photographers are exempted from this, but if
you show up with a tripod be prepared to grease a palm or hit the curb.

BoingBoing article: ( URL:
http://www.boingboing.net/2005/02/07/please_add_photos_of.html )

Many famous and not-so-famous buildings have done this. Particularly newer
structures -- even public art installations. I've heard that the Eiffel
Tower is wierdly not trademarked during the day, but is at night.

Here's a link to find out more about photog rights in the US and UK. I've
seen this guy mentioned in a couple places. I think he's an ACLU lawyer. (
URL: http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm )

Hmmm... the .pdf link doesn't seem to be working now. I'd suggest going back
later or doing a Google search.

I think it's fair to an extent to turn up the heat a little on people's
ideas and put their feet to the fire about what it is they are really
doing. If they are passionate about their ideas, that heat is not going
to deter them. Our devil's advocates shoot flames at these ideas to see
how fast they'll incinerate. That's valuable for the idea creator
because if the idea or the plan is solid, a little singeing is not going
to hurt it. It will, I hope, burn away the dross so that the true gold
of the idea is revealed. If criticism inspires someone to change their
plan for the better, or make the idea more flame-proof, then that's to
everyone's benefit. If they can't stand the heat and leave the kitchen,
then that's a benefit too.

On this list, I have seen many messages exhorting people to do things
for the right reasons, but NO messages that imply "you're not part of
our in-crowd so get lost". To the contrary, it appears to be a welcoming
group full of people willing to help others get up to speed in a medium
we care about. Maybe the various communication styles are not always to
everyone's liking, but that's a feature of our delightful diversity.

The challenges to our ideas or techniques that we receive in this group
are nothing compared to what the wider world will have to say once we
get out there. People who have no clue regarding the what, and how, and
why of vlogging will feel completely qualified to broadcast biased and
uninformed criticism on something they can never hope to understand.

I figure if I can get through the gauntlet of you lot, nobody else's
voice is going to matter, and I'll have a product that is the stronger
for it.

[videoblogging] We create the tools, we have the needs

2005-08-14 Thread R. Kristiansen

Hey all,

Here we are, 1100 or so of us.

We create the tools. We have the needs.

The companies that are trying to sell us stuff. They often don't
manage to listen to our expressions of need. Or our complaints about
existing tools.

I am frigging amazed by the fact that Apple isn't tuning in more to
us. Or conversing with us. It's like they frigging don't care. Yes, we
are a cult, yes, we are a marginal group of 1100 people. Apple or
Microsoft couldn't care less. But they could. They could realize how
important it is to have rss2 with enclosures IN your system if you
want to sell stuff to us. The importance of open systems. Open
standards.

We are the media - sounds like a joke, but it aint. It just aint.

Have you seen this? http://www.videoletters.net/

Use the thinking of that site. Apply it to whatever context you can
think of. Almost.

We are 1100 people. A creative overflow, collaboration, progression.

We are connected. In all kinds of ways.

Thank you.

Best,

Raymond M. Kristiansen

2005-08-14 Thread Steve Garfield

Hi Raymond,
Apple Cares.  It even says it on their support plan, AppleCare. ;-)

I think I mentioned here that I recently spoke to someone from Apple on
the phone about how I use Final Cut Pro to make videoblogs.  They are
interested in hearing what we are doing and learning how they can make
their products help us to make videoblogging easier.

They also talked with Michael Verdi at the SF Meet the Vloggers.

[videoblogging] help with enclosures?

2005-08-14 Thread Philip Clark

On Friday I got onto some high-speed Internet. I downloaded 800MB worth
of video blogs and then someone walked into the room and flicked on a
light and I saw the sign posted above my head. "Absolutely No
Downloading you will be asked to leave." So I hastened to minimize the
Safari downloads window with its shimmering blue status bars stacked up
to the sky.

Firewired it all to my iBook, reset Safari and no one was the wiser.
I'll be back.

One thing I did was check myself out on Mefeedia. Turns out it hadn't
registered any of my videos for the last week. I guess there's
something wrong with my feed, probably something simple but it's beyond
me. I was hoping someone on the list could help sort me out.

The feed is here:

I found FeedValidator while searching around and this is what it had to
say:

"Item contains more than one enclosure." But I like having an image
link to the movie, I'm not sure what to do.

This is not a pleasant subject for me. The word "enclosure" reminds me
of the word "closure" which reminds me of interviews with the victim's
family following the execution.

Plain vanilla RSS only allows for one enclosure. If you want more than
that (and you do) you have to use Yahoo's Media RSS Module. I can see that
you have Media RSS enclosures for some of your files (some of the images).
How are you creating enclosures? Are you doing anything in MT or are you
relying 100% on Feedburner.

Shut down all extraneous programs, including email and all the little items
in the sys tray.

If that's not enough, use ctrl + alt + del to pull up the Task Manager and
shut down more stuff.

Failing that, wonder what speed processor & how much RAM you got?

Yes, Mr. Kinberg, you're quite right: we stand on the shoulders / successes

I scan the podcast list.

Does the blogosphere have this kind of metadiscussion buzzing in the

2005-08-14 Thread Chris Baudry

David,

As a follow up to what you say about sponsors, a very practical question: after identifying a list of potential sponsors that might be interested, how do you contact them? Do you contact their marketing dept. and what type of person are you trying to reach? Or communication agencies? Phone? Email?  Is there a directory of these marketing and communication people?

Thanks,

RadioMike,Congratulations on your new project. I wish you and your colleague all the best!
Below I will share my thoughts and knowledge, but this is still somewhat uncharted territory. I am not an expert and your mileage may vary:First, I agree with your assessment of securing an underwriter/sponsor. If
you can get one, it often means more money than a typical advertising rate card will pay out and the opportunity to build a solid business relationship with a company that has similar interests and target audiences as your own.
>My questions regarding this are mostly how does one present statistics>and audience numbers to a potential underwriter when the potential>podcast has not been produced and downloaded by anyone yet (I can
>probably dig up statistics and audience numbers from my one-time podcast>that I had to put on hiatus due to the emergency of finding paid>employment in Austin.First and foremost, you should ask yourself, "What does the potential
sponsor want?" That simple question will keep the rest of your work focused. Is it a local sponsor? National? What sort of demographics are they looking for? At this point, without a show-specific track record, you aren't selling
a product, you're selling a concept. Which means a certain amount of forecasting is acceptable, but back it up with whatever data you can get. For instance, if there is a similar podcast, try to find out what numbers
they get. Get general information about podcasters. I recently posted a link to a survey that showed people who read blogs tend to be younger and wealthier than typical web surfers. Find out what you can about podcast
listeners. The numbers you have from your previous show are great, especially if this new show is similar. First of all, it is good that the numbers from your last show (July 6, 2005) are recent. But the next question is what kind of
numbers do you have? Do they support the goals of the potential sponsor? If you can track the location of downloaders, are your numbers from local sources? Keep in mind that not all local users will appear to derive from a
local source. AOL users, I believe, generally show up coming from Virginia. But if you have numbers from Malaysia and you have a local sponsor that may not be seen as a benefit.Find out if you can, your previous show's numbers of pageviews and unique
users. Keep in mind that if you are delivering your podcast in a feed, people with podcatchers don't have to visit your site, which can, of course, decrease pageviews and unique user numbers. And will make any of the
sponsor's banner ads and links on your site underperform. What I'd suggest: certainly mention the sponsor in the podcast, but try to drive traffic to the sponsor's site, your site, or both. Have something on
your website a listener will not get from just the podcast: pictures, a blog, articles, links for more information, or a way to give feedback. Create a contest: have your sponsor donate his/her product and give it away
on your website. Set up a contest entry form on your website and tell people about it on your show. That makes it easy and more acceptable to mention the sponsor, and it should drive traffic to your homepage.
Tell the sponsor What it is about your new podcast that is likely to increase your numbers over the previous one. Do your numbers show a loyal audience that will function as a foundation for your new show? Did your
numbers indicate a steady audience growth? Will you have more advertising this time around? Will you be listed on iTunes (again, likely not a benefit for a local sponsor)? Also, you may not want to mention stopping your show to find emergency
employment. I do not Know the details surrounding the situation, but a business wants to know that they are making an investment in a stable project. last thing you want is a potential sponsor wondering if -- after
they invest in you -- you're going to go on another hiatus.>And also, how does one determine>an underwriting rate or fee for a new podcast or videoblog? This is virtually uncharted territory bacause it is a new distribution
model. What impact do you suspect this sponsorship will have for you and for the sponsor. Sometimes it is worth losing money to be affiliated with a certain business. If that is not the case here, come up with a number that
will give your sponsor the perception of value and you a reason to keep them around. Do Internet searches. Oftenthere is a lot of guidance than can be derived from Google searches.

I feel your pain. I just got finished editing in WMM2 for the second

All the things Jan said are true but I would also add that if you try

try to go beyond capabilities of the program. It doesn't take much.

I try to remember to save every 5 minutes but I was so close to being

Josh Kinberg from this list wrote an improvement for that plugin a while
ago. Hopefully he can give you the download link. His version only makes
enclosures from links marked with rel="enclosure". That gives you a much
more control.

Yep, probably. I can't say until you've tried it though. :o)

2005-08-14 Thread Beth Agnew

I really enjoyed that Matt guy dancing all over the world. Not only was
it a fun dance to watch, but the sheer enormity of being able to film in
all those locations!! Wow.

I think it was one of our newer vloggers - Beth - who suggested we
needed a FAQ.

The above link is to the FAQ wiki - dive in.

[videoblogging] faq on capturing/uploading video

2005-08-14 Thread Steven Livingstone

Hello all – great to be part of the community!

Q. Does anyone know of a single source (or multiple sources)
that have video/audio/pictorial idiot guides (of which I am a proud member) for
people getting from their hardware starting point to the point where they can
now upload the video.

So if I have mobile phone model XYZ, this is what I do to
capture video, then I need do to this to actually get it on the web (from
emailing it, or upload from the phone or buy some hardware that helps me
transfer it to my pc which I need to save as a specific format and then upload
and so on…).

I only ask as I’ve been asked by more than one person
about how to do this and I also had a bit of an issue when my first mobile
required that I purchase some further hardware in order to transfer my pictures.

It would be ideal is there was an extensive (probably Wiki
based) FAQ for videoblogging that covered as many models (phones, pda’s,
pc’s and so on).

regards,

[videoblogging] DIE H.264 see you later...

2005-08-14 Thread Kunga

OK I am surrendering on the H.264 thing and reposting my videos without it. The quality definitely suffers, but seeing something is certainly better than nothing. Taylor Barcroft Now Syndicated on the World Wide Web. Add us to your iTunes 4.9 Podcasts playlist today by pasting this URL into the Advanced—> Subscribe to Podcast... On Aug 14, 2005, at 3:29 AM, Kunga wrote:My Videos Audio PLAY in Quicktime Player NOT in Column Preview NOR   iTunes Player I went into my iTunes folder to find the videos I had downloaded from   the RSS Feed Subscription Feature in the Advanced Menu. I tried to   play them in Preview still with NO AUDIO. double click on them they   launch in QuickTime player where they play perfectly WITH SOUND! So it appears that column view Preview play  AND video playback in   iTunes are NOT H.264 Compatible. How's that for a Press Release???
