Re: Table Index in iOS 6 with Voiceover turned on

2012-10-02 Thread David Chittenden
It's the same music. However, it is called adjust values and only appears in
the rotor when I touch the table selector. It is consistent with the change
around action.

I missed this one because I always use double-tap and hold pass through to use
the selector the way sighted use it. Much faster and no flicking.

Re: Table Index in iOS 6 with Voiceover turned on

2012-10-02 Thread Cheryl Homiak
For one thing, I've never really thought of it as tapping to activate the
index; I just touch in the right place and it's there but I suppose it really
is a tap and I just hadn't considered it. But I have no problem with this with
either my 4S or my5 as I can easily move through the alphabet in the index. .
However, I also don't get anything called an action rotor. In fact, while I can
delete just fine in mail, I don't think I've come across anything that says
action when I do the rotor motion anywhere. It isn't causing a problem for me
but I'm wondering why I am not seeing what several people keep mentioning in
various places on their phones.

recording with dropvox

2012-10-02 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
For those who don't know, I am using an iphone 4 and using an app called
dropvox wich is a recording app that you use to record with, then it uploads
your files to dropbox. I took it away on a camp and turned the phone to
aeroplane mode to save battery so I'd have more time for recording. I was
recording for almost the entire day, about 15 hours for 3 days and I checked
dropbox and not all the files seemed to have uploaded yet, even though it
was recording and all working properly. Just wondering is there a time limit
where recordings may not work anymore or cut out?

Re: Dropbox, passwords, and security concerns

2012-10-02 Thread Grant Hardy
Raul and List,

I'd like to add a couple of points to this discussion. Firstly, it's
important to understand that 1Password encrypts your data similarly to
other apps such as TrueCrypt. Even if a thief got their hands on your
1Password vault, it could take years to attack your password (assuming
you're using a strong password to protect your 1Password data). It is
not as though passwords are stored in any way that could permit
Dropbox employees or hackers to read the data. Of course Dropbox
suffers from security breaches, but the 1Password vault shouldn't be a
strong target because again, it's encrypted. Note: this is very
similar to how apps such as LastPass store your data in the cloud. I
don't think 1Password should be any less secure than LastPass or
RoboForm; on the contrary, I'd argue that it's more secure. You
control the encryption of your 1Password data at your end. With those
other services, you're leaving the control up to them. (And yes, I
would trust them. But if you're really really concerned about
security, then you should consider this.)

Secondly, if you're going to rely on a password manager, at least in
my view, you have to have a backup in the cloud. If your equipment
gets lost or stolen, then you'll have a very difficult, if not
impossible, time gaining access to all your accounts again without
some kind of backup that you can easily access.

Thirdly, it is not as though Dropbox saves your data forever. They
store deleted files and previous versions of files for 30 days, and
then they're gone. If you pay for Packrat Unlimited, an add-on
available to Dropbox Pro users, then unlimited versions and deleted
file history is stored. But in either case, if you really wanted you
could login to the Dropbox web interface and instruct that Dropbox
should permanently delete specific files or folders.

Of course, I'm sure Dropbox keeps backups of user data that would
remain a little while after that, but this is pretty normal. Just
about every online service does this. And again, I wouldn't worry too
much about 1Password being a target, unless a backdoor is found in the
way they encrypt and store your data.

Grant

Re: Can you tag friends in status updates or photos using the native facebook app?

2012-10-02 Thread Brett
Hi,

I am not sure about photos: as I have never tried that. However, you can tag
people in status updates and check ins. Once you have clicked on either Status
update or Check In, flick through that screen until you get to the Select
Friends button and double tap it.

This will open up the friends dialog. You have a search field up the top and
your friends are listed below, but VoiceOver doesn't read your friends name.

The way to work around this for now is to double tap on the search field and
type enough of your friends name to narrow down the list to just that friend.
If you then do a single right flick from the search field, you will hear a
click sound and voiceOver will not say anything. However, if you double tap
here, your friends name will be added. You will be able to see their name in
the search edit field. To add another friend, just double tap on the search
edit field again then type a space and start typing the second friends name.

If the first friend you added was not the correct one, double tap on the search
edit field and in stead of typing a space first, just start typing the name of
the friend you want to add and this will overwrite the first incorrect one.

Hope this helps,

to take them apart, put the phone in the first tray and then put the whole
thing inside the second one. It covers the whole bottom of the phone and
comes up arond the sides; this is why I am describing it as a tray but there
might be a better descriptive word. The surface of the phone is left open
except for the provided screen protector which I put on temporarily until I
get my tactile protector. All buttons and connectors are accessible.
Especially with the power button, it does take firm pressure in the exact
place to opperate but I am not finding this to be a problem. If you just want
something simple for your case to sit firmly in and don't need more top
protection, this is a nice little case. It isn't going to fall out. I do
think the 28 dollars or so I payed might have been a little much but I
realize I could have payed a lot more. Here is the Amazon link for the case I
got; it's available in several colors.

It's a look at Downcast in this weeks episode of iBlindTech

2012-10-02 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi All

This weeks episode is a look at the app Downcast. Downcast, is in my, and many
others opinion the best way to listen to your podcasts. I was hoping on doing a
quick episode where I just cover the main aspects of using the app. However I
enjoy playing with the app so much and so went through quite a few of the
features. I hope you enjoy. Please do contact me if you have any questions.

There's an episode link below to listen or please consider subscribing to the

Re: Can you tag friends in status updates or photos using the native facebook app?

2012-10-02 Thread Jen Colley
Another friend said you could just start typing the friend’s name and a drop
down menu would appear and the names would come up.
I tried that but it didn’t work for me like if you want to tag someone at the
beginning of a status.
I then wondered if it was like on the main facebook page where you had to press
enter and then put an at sign in and then with no spaces type the person’s
name.

Subject: Re: Can you tag friends in status updates or photos using the native
facebook app?

I’ve experienced this bug ever since the iOS 6 update for this app came out.
As soon as one leaves the app by pressing the home button, the audio dies. The
one way I’ve gotten around it is by twice pressing the home button to get to
the app switcher and from there, press the home button to get to the home
screen. That way, the game’s audio feed continues to play in the background. I
reported this bug to MLB and they wrote me back over the weekend asking to
call, but I haven’t had time to do so.

for my company, it's been gently used and the battery is in good shape. It's
running ios 5 and I was reluctant to upgrade to 6 because of the hardware spec
of the unit. I really need to be showing current stuff though. It doesn't
make ssense to hang on for professional purposes just because the thing works.

If you're interested, let me know.

Best,

You can download the HQ voice on an iPad or iPod Touch just as you can on an

of why you might not get the HQ voice is because you are still on iOS 4.

2012-10-02 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Bill,

When I first ran this version, a notice said you have to double-tap to start an
episode playing. When VoiceOver is running, this means you have to triple-tap.
And while the app isn't scrolling correctly with Vo running at the moment, you
can search for a title to put it on the main screen and then triple-tap it.

Best,
Anna

it follows the screen so the movie stays at the last one on the beginning
 page.
 Hope that makes sense.

Re: syncing apps to my iPad

When you set up your iPad, you should get the option to restore from a backup.
Choose icloud or iTunes, depending where you backed up your previous Apple

The thing you really want to be aware of is that the speaker quality on the
iPod Touch 3rd or 4th generation is not very good.

the touch has the HQ voice. But if you plan to listen through the speaker, it
isn't very good.
The iPad 3 has the HQ voice and sounds really good.

Hi,

I purchased this case as well. I promptly returned it to Amazon. First, I
love the case. Nice, sleek, and slender profile. Good build quality too.
Except, the power button. Firm pressure? haha. Not in the model I received.
I had to press down so hard, I almost dropped my phone a few times. Mind you,
this was with the rubber coating, and outer hard plastic shell on. In this
configuration, it was near impossible to depress the sleep wake button. With
the plastic shell off, it was easier but, by no means trivial.

Hi,

I actually think its a design flaw. I say this do to the material the part of
the case covering the power button is made out of. Its the same density as the
rubber at the corners meant for rigidity. Do to this lack of give, and the
iPhone 5 power button being more recessed than that of the iPhone 4 or 4S,
sufficient contact isn't made between the case and power button. If this case
was made for a 4S for example, it would work just fine with out having to
figure out the be way to press a button since the power button on the 4S
protrudes more.

and the iPhone 5 power button being more recessed than that of the iPhone 4
or 4S, sufficient contact isn't made between the case and power button. If
this case was made for a 4S for example, it would work just fine with out
having to figure out the be way to press a button since the power button on
 the 4S protrudes more.

you don't feel the pressure of the power button pushing in, the tendency is

attempt to get it to work. It took me a little practice but now one firm
press and release works for me. But i understand that this might not work
well for some people. If they made one for the 4S, I would buy that too.

I purchased this case as well. I promptly returned it to Amazon. First, I

Except, the power button. Firm pressure? haha. Not in the model I
received. I had to press down so hard, I almost dropped my phone a few
times. Mind you, this was with the rubber coating, and outer hard plastic
shell on. In this configuration, it was near impossible to depress the
sleep wake button. With the plastic shell off, it was easier but, by no
 means trivial.

I got my splash medley case today. It is a very simple case. What I would
call the tray for the iPhone actually has two pieces, one harder than the

together or to take them apart, put the phone in the first tray and then
put the whole thing inside the second one. It covers the whole bottom of
the phone and comes up arond the sides; this is why I am describing it as
a tray but there might be a better descriptive word. The surface of the
phone is left open except for the provided screen protector which I put on
temporarily until I get my tactile protector. All buttons and connectors
are accessible. Especially with the power button, it does take firm
pressure in the exact place to opperate but I am not finding this to be a
problem. If you just want something simple for your case to sit firmly in
and don't need more top protection, this is a nice little case. It isn't
going to fall out. I do think the 28 dollars or so I payed might have been
a little much but I realize I could have payed a lot more. Here is the
Amazon link for the case I got; it's available in several colors.

Looking for a case for the 4S like the Splash medley for iPhone 5

2012-10-02 Thread Cheryl Homiak
From my description of the Splash medley case, or in Ricardo's case, from
having had hands-on contact with it, can anybody tell me if there's a similar
case for the 4S. I want basically a nice tight tray to hold it and that allows
me access to all the buttons and camera etc, sturdy for the bottom but not
adding bulk.

Thanks.

I’ve experienced this bug ever since the iOS 6 update for this app came
out. As soon as one leaves the app by pressing the home button, the audio dies.
The one way I’ve gotten around it is by twice pressing the home button to get
to the app switcher and from there, press the home button to get to the home
screen. That way, the game’s audio feed continues to play in the background. I
reported this bug to MLB and they wrote me back over the weekend asking to

Re: Compact voice on iPad

2012-10-02 Thread Garth Humphreys
There was a strange bug with iOS 5 where the HQ voice was always the US voice
Samantha. Even though you would have the default voice and region set to
another one. With all the iPads I tested I found this same behaviour under iOS
5 This was o all 3 generations of the iPad. It was weird i that even if you
didn't have the US voice enabled for the rotor, the Use compact voice toggle
would still appear in settings and would appear to do nothing. For me in
Australia I had the default voice set to my own region but never was abled to
get the HQ Karen voice. I was confused when I first got my new iPad because it
seemed like the use compact toggle did nothing, than when I added the US vice
to the rotor I noticed that it was this voice which was the HQ one.

Obviously the nature of the bug meant that those of you in the US would never
have noticed this issue.

In any case this bug has now been corrected under iOS6. It was with delight
that I got the HQ Karen voice on my iPad shortly after updating it.

I've experienced this bug ever since the iOS 6 update for this app came out.
As soon as one leaves the app by pressing the home button, the audio dies.
The one way I've gotten around it is by twice pressing the home button to
get to the app switcher and from there, press the home button to get to the
home screen. That way, the game's audio feed continues to play in the
background. I reported this bug to MLB and they wrote me back over the
weekend asking to call, but I haven't had time to do so.

There is also one called Slice, which gives information on package
status, when it is shipped, out for delivery, and other things. Slice
works best with web based email accounts, like those with Gmail,
Hotmail, and other services. I think it was free in the App Store. I
don't believe that you have much setup since it tracks the notices you
get in your inbox regarding packages and purchases you have made. I
ahven't used it very much but it sounds handy. I recall reading about
it in one of the lists of iOS app books from National Braille Press.

Subject: Face TIme over 3G for those who live in the U.S

 Hi all,

Anyone who has ATT without a shared data plan is likely aware they
cannot use Face TIme over the 3G network. Although I do not believe I
would use Face TIme for general conversation, I believe there are
cases where it may be valuable. Obviously there are services such as
Skype which apparently ATT does not block. Now with that said I
decided to file a complaint with the FCC which is the regulatory
agency for all things related to communications such as wireless etc.
in the United States. I decided to file the complaint because there is
no technical reason for ATT to block Face TIme over the 3G network and
especially if they do not block Skype.
My understanding is that Verizon Wireless does not block Face Time and
mor does Sprint. I believe that ATT has taken this position for one
of two reasons and one of which is surely monetary. So, why do I bring
 this up?
Because I wanted to let anyone who has considered filing a complaint
that ATT will respond. The best part is I have received an initial
verbal response which is exactly what I expected. THe conversation can
be best summed up as to bad. There was absolutely no point in having
a conversation with ATT because despite the fact I pointed out the
obvious fact they do not block Skype or any other VOIP service or
placed any special restrictions on such services, they have blocked
Face Time. I even pointed out how Face TIme could be useful in some
circumstances for an individual with a visual impairment which
incidentally is a true statement. So, I anticipate that although ATT
has taken this position for now they will continue to face a great
deal of pressure from individuals and groups to change their position.
The good thing is there are other avenues and options.

Hi,

I have used TrackThis quite a bit and like it. It tells you when your
package changes location by default, but you can set it up just to tell
you when it's out for delivery. You get very little info for post office
packages, but plenty for UPS and FedEx.

Best,
Anna

Re: Table Index in iOS 6 with Voiceover turned on

2012-10-02 Thread Keith Watson
Frank,

Actually you have to turn your rotor to Adjust Value, but yes I can force this
issue. I say that I can force this issue because when I go into contacts and
select the index my rotor automatically switches to adjust value. But if I turn
the rotor to another setting and then reselect the index it appears that the
rotor does not switch back to adjust value automatically. I will call this one
in as well. I don't know if you tried to change the rotor to headings and
navigate that way, but if you do you will soon see that it is FUBAR as well.

Re: BT keyboard oddity

Hello James. I'm using the Amazon Basics keyboard and it has a dedicated Home
button in the F1. So, if I press this 3 times quickly it will toggle VoiceOver

VoiceOver is running.

Re: Dropbox, passwords, and security concerns

2012-10-02 Thread Damashe Thomas
I certainly agree. I use 1password. I chose that service to try first and
have stayed with. The encryption is of a high enough level that it matches
military encryption standards. As for the information being stored in the
cloud, as Scott pointed out, a person would need the master password to
access your stored data or spend a very long time attempting to hack it. If
dropbox were to suffer another hack, we all would be aware of it well before
any thief could get close to hacking the 1password file. Scott pointed out,
and I agree, that this is all supposing that you select a very strong master
password to begin with.
I am by no means intending to take anything away from the other password
vault service out there, but like Raul, I tried one service first and am
satisfied with it. I think this is a worthwhile discussion because not
everyone is as security conscious as others. There are very basic steps one
can take to add extra security to their online presence, turning on two step
varification is one. I would like to note that facebook, google, PayPal, and
dropbox all offer this method of signing in to your accounts.

Grant,

I have to agree with you. I have no reservations about 1Password or storing
the database in the cloud. I think the encryption is sufficient and the only
thing I would keep in mind is ensuring you have a strong password on the
database itself. Obviously password would not be a secure password, but with
a good master password, I believe the files are nearly hack-proof. THis is a
great discussion because there is so much educating that needs to be done. I
think Very good points Grant.

It's more about security and what you put on Dropbox and what is safe
 and what isn't.

Many people feel it's ok to put whatever on Dropbox while others only
put non-secure stuff, and still others are somewhere in between.

What I do in regards to Dropbox is put files in it which I don't
particularly care if the Dropbox staff somehow gains access to them. I
know for a fact that Dropbox stores files on there even if you delete
them. How do I know this? I once erased a folder of 5 good byeello Len and
others. This app is a bit weird with the ui at times but is otherwise
accessible. It was 1 us dollar when I purchased it. of audio and
later needed it for a friend, and so I copied it back over. It had been
about 3 months since I had deleted them from Dropbox, yet when I copied
them over again, it didn't take hours to upload and update, it only took
a few minutes? Why is that? Because Dropbox already had a copy of those
files. I also know that if you have a file which is an exact copy of
someone else's file even if you are not sharing folders with that
person, Dropbox uses the same copy. This allows them to save on disc
space over all in the big picture. For example, if I download the iTunes
setup file for Windows and put it in my installs folder of Dropbox which
I only share with 5 people, and if 100 other people across the world
also have this same file in their own private or public space of
Dropbox, then Dropbox uses that one copy rather than multiple copies.
Some might feel this is a breach of security. I personally feel it's
 Dropbox using disc space wisely.

The one thing I don't do is put a text file of credit card or social
security numbers in Dropbox just for the convenience of having access to
those from my iPhone. Call me paranoid, but that's the way it is.
Instead, what I do is use Truecrypt. Truecrypt is a program which allows
you to create a file container of any size and put stuff in it. Think of
it like a virtual usb stick. So, I have a 10 Mb Truecrypt container
called KeepOut.tc. Yes, only 10 megs in size. I have this file in my
dropbox folder and when I want to review personal text files from any of
my computers, I simply mount this small 10 meg file and it becomes its
own drive. Like drive x maybe. I can then open files, copy files, add
files, do whatever I want in my little 10 meg virtual usb stick. When
I'm done, I unmount it, that's like using safely remove hardware. The
file is updated on Dropbox and closed up and secure again.

There is an iphone app which will open Truecrypt files and so if I want
access to this data from my iphone, then I simply do the same process
 from there.

Some would say this is too much work for security, but it's worth it to
me to take the extra seconds to open the Truecrypt file, look at it, and
then close it when I'm done.

I do a similar thing with all the documents in my documents folder of my
netbook and my pc where I back them up onto a Truecrypt volume and that
volume lives in Dropbox. So, it's like my own backup solution. I've
written batch files to automatically open the virtual file, copy the
changed files from my documents, and then close it. So, in the end it
doesn't take much time at all. I'm not the only one who does this
because there are various people who have blogged about it and who have
shared similar doings in terms of Dropbox, backups, and security.

Lastly, I mentioned KeePass as a password manager. This program is
available in many different platforms, iOS and Windows for example, and
can share the same database. So if I want to get access to a username
and password for something, I can use that. The password file itself is
encrypted, and so can safely live inside Dropbox where MyKeepass from
 iOS can read it.

Hope that helps, and hope you join the paranoia team.

Paying that much for a device and for it to be made of cheap plastic

 Hi all,

Anyone who has ATT without a shared data plan is likely aware they cannot

Face TIme for general conversation, I believe there are cases where it may
be valuable. Obviously there are services such as Skype which apparently
ATT does not block. Now with that said I decided to file a complaint with
the FCC which is the regulatory agency for all things related to
communications such as wireless etc. in the United States. I decided to file
the complaint because there is no technical reason for ATT to block Face
TIme over the 3G network and especially if they do not block Skype.
My understanding is that Verizon Wireless does not block Face Time and mor
does Sprint. I believe that ATT has taken this position for one of two
reasons and one of which is surely monetary. So, why do I bring this up?
Because I wanted to let anyone who has considered filing a complaint that
ATT will respond. The best part is I have received an initial verbal
response which is exactly what I expected. THe conversation can be best
summed up as to bad. There was absolutely no point in having a
conversation with ATT because despite the fact I pointed out the obvious
fact they do not block Skype or any other VOIP service or placed any special
restrictions on such services, they have blocked Face Time. I even pointed
out how Face TIme could be useful in some circumstances for an individual
with a visual impairment which incidentally is a true statement. So, I
anticipate that although ATT has taken this position for now they will
continue to face a great deal of pressure from individuals and groups to
 change their position.
The good thing is there are other avenues and options.

Re: Aluminum versus Glass iPHone, Just a Comment

2012-10-02 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello Mark, I don't think you are unique. At least, I've read similar opinions
from others on the intertubes. I think that as has been pointed out before,
sometimes thinner and lighter can be perceived as not stirdy. However if you
also compare iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4S, you will see how the 4S feels better even
though the 3GS feels more solid. At least to me it does. Regarding the iPhone
5, to me it does feel comfortable in the hand. If these things keep getting
thinner they will reach the thinness of paper and we will need an adapter to
plug the headphones into, LOL. Seriously though, odd man out or not, opinions
is what helps to drive innovation with companies as new ideas and designs come
out with new products. I'd rather not take a chance in dropping my glass iPhone
4S, so I use TPU cases which still allow it to look good with minimal
protection. However I love taking it out of the case and holding and caressing
it. Yes, I'm probably weird, but I too love the look and feel of my iPhone 4S.

Re: audible won't stay open

2012-10-02 Thread Lois Butterfield
Hi Peggy,

well, that’s what I did, and I have it back now. I didn’t down load more than
one book at a time though. Very odd to say the least. I will contact them
about the problem.

The whole problem began when my book stopped in the middle of a part for no
reason. I believe they had said that problem was fixed with the latest update.
Oh well, I’ll be sending them a note about it.

Thanks for suggestions.

I had this same problem. I had to delete the app and reinstall. I find that I
can't download more than one book at a time or the app crashes. I reported the
problem to Audible but maybe you should too so that we can get them to fix this
problem.

I just had some trouble with a book and had to delete and then down load the
part again. After that, I can’t get Audible to stay open. It closes
immediately after opening. I have shut down the phone and started it back up,
which didn’t help at all. I’m not sure what else to try. If I uninstall
Audible, will I lose everything, or will the books be in the backup file?

  Thank you for any help.

 Hi all,

Anyone who has ATT without a shared data plan is likely aware they cannot
use Face TIme over the 3G network. Although I do not believe I would use

Re: Face TIme over 3G for those who live in the U.S

2012-10-02 Thread Damashe Thomas

Hi,
A shared data plan, which are also refered to as share everything plans, are
usually a flat rate access cost for phones, tablets and mobile hotspots. For
example, vzw would charge $40 per smartphone on the account, $30 for a
feature phone or non-smartphone, $20 for one of the hotspot devices, and $10
for each tablet. Then there is a pool of data that all those devices can use
and you would select the amount of data you wanted access to each month. In
the case of vzw, it starts at $50 for 1GB all the way up to $150 for 20GB.
There are different packages between the two extremes at differing price
points.

An example of hw this would work is:
2 smartphones at $40 each
1 feature phone at $30
3 iPads at $10 each
10GB of data at a cost of $100 for all devices to share
Your monthly bill before taxes etc would be $240
I forgot to mention that all phones would have unlimited talk and texting.
All prices are accurate only for verizon wireless. the concept is the same
with att, however their pricing structure is slightly different and I can't
comment with any accuracy because I am a verizon customer and haven't looked
in to att's plans.

It wasn't my intention, but I may have strayed off topic for the list. My
apologies, but I thought it worth explaining.

I haven't looked into the shared data plans yet myself, but they don't
have anything to do with tethering. It's when you have multiple lines or
phones on the same account and you want to have a data plan shared
across those phones.
