Re: My First Experience Using Apple Pay
I used Apple Pay to pay for a replacement cable from within the Apple Store app last weekend. It was one of the easiest purchases that I have ever done. I have also used it at Subway. That was my first time using it and I didn't realize I had to keep my thumb on the ID sensor, so as a result my transaction took a little longer. Still, it was quick and seemless. At one Subway location that I went to with my wife, the clerk said their machine was broken or that they have had problems with it. I don't know if this was true, but for what it's worth, that store was not in the best of locations. The store that we did use it at was in more of a populated and frequented area. I am anxiously waiting for more fast food restaurants to get Appple Pay, such as burger places, since we tend to frequent those. Wayne On 2/4/15, M. In other instances, say for example at Radio Shack, only one of the terminals may have been setup for Apple Pay. So, I suggest that you first Google a list of stores accepting Apple Pay; second, when you arrive at the store, find out from one of the employees if you can actually use Apple Pay before you begin your transaction. One of the companies that has already signed onto the Apple Pay train, as it were, is Panera Bread, a fast-casual restaurant that just happens to be one of my most favorites as, in my opinion, their coffee is second to none. So, before going to the restaurant, I opened up the Passbook app and elected to use the credit card already on file with Apple. Part of this process includes verifying the use of the card, with the Passbook app, itself. In my case, I was given two methods of verifying the card. I could (1) download a company-branded wallet app or (2) call the credit card company and verify my information with a representative. As I am an app minimalist, I decided to call the company. After authorizing Passbook with the credit card company, I received a notification on the phone that the credit card had been authorized and was now ready for use with Passbook. Two more things to note: 1. I have Passbook setup for use via cell signal and 2. I have authorized Touch ID for use with the Passbook app. After doing all of this. I went into the restaurant and ordered some coffee. After the cashier rang up my order, with the phone locked and the display off, I simply placed my finger on the Touch ID/Home button and waved the phone just above The transaction terminal (where a sighted person would swipe a credit card and/or sign her/his name. As I did this, as the phone passed over the terminal, the screen came on displaying the passbook app. At approximately the same time, the phone vibrated once and the transaction was complete. It took less than 5 seconds from the time I placed my finger on the Touch ID/home button while passing the phone over the terminal to when the vibration was felt. RE: Information on the inaccessibility of iTunes 12.1 from Freedom Scientific
At best, we’d probably be looking at a fix with the next iTunes update which would make sense to come out around the same time as iOS 8.2 if that. Don’t go holding your breath though. I’m just glad I stayed with 11.4 or whatever the last version was before v-12. Begin snip. With iTunes 12.1 and 64-bit iTunes Apple inadvertently introduced an accessibility problem with accessing the album list and perhaps other lists in the iTunes UI. (The problem does not exist in the 32-bit version of iTunes.) It impacts JAWS, Narrator, and Window Eyes. All three of these products use 64-bit components to obtain MSAA event information inside of the iTunes process generating the events. This generally offers better performance than receiving events out-of-process. NVDA uses the out-of-process technique and is primarily a 32-bit app, even on 64-bit windows. The nature of the iTunes bug is such that it does not impact 32-bit processes receiving events out-of-process. End of snip. So this is why it works with NVDA, and it is also why some can use 12.1 and others cannot. It would appear that it is up to Apple to help figure this out. Re: Information on the inaccessibility of iTunes 12.1 from Freedom Scientific
Hi Charles and all. Thanks Neal for sending this info along. I was about to do it so glad it's out there. As you can appreciate, we wanted to test thoroughly before making any kind of public comment, so I've had to keep quiet on this one until we were sure of what was going on. Charles, yes, Freedom Scientific has reached out to Apple to let them know what we believe to be causing the issue in the iTunes 12.1 code for 64-bit Windows. For now, if you run 64-bit Windows, I think the best option if you need iTunes is to revert if you can. It has arrived, and while some parts of it are going well (like using it for typing, and the quicknav function) others aren't going so great. Re: Just Used Be My Eyes for The First Time
I saw a post on Twitter from be My Eyes where they say that if you wait on hold for 15 or 20 minutes, or more, then disconnect and reconnect. They say it is not a problem of not enough volunteers, but rather of their server matching everyone appropriately. They recommend waiting no more than 5 minutes for a volunteer. I too had my first experience with Be My eyes about 10 days ago when i needed to identify some medicines. It was 8pm Saturday night my time and I spoke with a woman from Australia. It was cool. Re: The new Outlook app for IOS, anyone
The strange thing about the Microsoft Outlook app was, you have to read through the sirvice agreement and I couldn’t find a way to jump to the bottom to find the I agree button and when I finally got there, I still didn’t see one and so at that point in time Microsoft and I parted company again. When my HP 64 bit 17.3 inch laptop dies, Microsoft and I will no longer be friends and I’ll stick to Apple products. Regards, Alan Teenagers; Tired of being harassed by your parents? Act now! Voiceover correctly speaks whether they are selected or not. I then have 3 options across the bottom of the screen, “Mark”, “Move” or “trash”. I am an Outlook user on the computer, but I haven’t tried Outlook on the iPhone and this is one case where I don’t see much of a reason why I would want to since I think the implementation of the Mail app is very good and it fully supports both Exchange accounts and Exchange Active Sync accounts. RE: [497261] Itunes 12.1
Hi, You haven't been reading all the way down. I did report to Apple and they responded that they support Windows Eyes when, in reality, Windows Eyes say that they support only iTunes 11. I wrote back to Apple to ask them to explain why they claim they support only Windows Eyes and they, themselves say they don't support above iTunes 11. The response was that they support only Windows Eyes but that doesn't mean that Windows Eyes supports them so we have to wait for Windows Eyes to update their software. That sounds like a game of pitch and catch. They toss the ball to one another and, meanwhile, we are up the creek without a paddle in a wire canoe. Bottom line is that Apple is telling us to manage somehow until the accessibility software catches-up to them. I would have thought that the accessibility department at Apple would have given advance notice to the company or companies so they could prepare ahead of time. If they are an accessibility department, they must have tested iTunes 12.1 with thee accessibility software they support. Meanwhile, where is Tim Cook's commitment to accessibility? This is not just one app, this is the software we use to manage all our I devices. When they gave notice of the availability of a new version, could they not have put a warning that this new version does not work with screen review software or didn't they know because they didn't test it? Having said all that, don't we have the responsibility of making sure things are working before we jump into them? Were some of us in a bit too much of a hurry to jump into the latest and greatest? iTunes12.1 accessibility
Hi all, I don't use iTunes myself but I'm just passing this on for those people who do. From: Scott Erichsen piano...@scotterichsen.com To: vi...@freelists.org Hi all, I’m sharing the following from Freedom Scientific to help clear up confusion as to why iTunes 12.1 is inaccessible to JAWS and other screen readers under 64bit windows. Just to let everyone know. We have had some success getting in touch with an engineer on the iTunes for Windows team at Apple. We have given them the information they need to get this resolved and will have to give them a chance to resolve it now. Hope this helps. Plantronics Voyager Legend Question...
Hi Everyone: Because of the great recommendations on this list, I got the Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth headset the other day. It is working great, and I love it except there is one problem. It seems when I try to talk on a phone call with it, the person can't hear me. The call goes through fine, but when the person answers and I try to talk they can't seem to hear me. I have moved the microphone to as close to my mouth as I can. Is there a button or something I need to press before speaking so the person can hear me? Is there a firmware update or something that fixes this issue? Is anyone else with this headset having this problem? Re: sudoku alternatives anyone?
Thanks: Sorry for getting back about this again. I am maybe not understanding your suggestionor making my question clear. Let's suppose I filled in all the potential candidates for all emppty cells. I then start work on narrowing down their number but make a mistake. I'd love to be able to return to a previous version of that same game, where I had just entered all candidate. Any way to do this? Re: [497261] Itunes 12.1
Reading all the way down, I just see this one message in the thread, so I apologize if I'm covering old ground. I wouldn't judge Apple's commitment to accessibility or the work of their accessibility team based on how just one of their applications performs on a non-Apple platform. If you just look at the Apple devices and applications, there's enough there to keep a test team busy for a life time. I'm also not sure what Apple's official support statement is on supporting screen readers under Windows. I've only seen that they recommend Window Eyes. IMHO, I wouldn't be surprised if iTunes on Windows is a pretty low priority for Apple. For example, they don't support the Metro interface, there last round of changes was to give it a look and feel to match the latest OSX software and so on. I think more and more people are using their mobile devices to consume content more than their laptops and desktops and so consequently people are buying laptops and desktops to support their mobile devices and not the other way around. If Apple were to drop the Windows version of iTunes altogether, I'm not sure they wouldn't sell more Macs and not even notice a drop in sales on iPhones. On 02/04/2015 03:27 PM, Ron Pelletier wrote: Hi, You haven’t been reading all the way down. I did report to Apple and they responded that they support Windows Eyes when, in reality, Windows Eyes say that they support only iTunes 11. I wrote back to Apple to ask them to explain why they claim they support only Windows Eyes and they, themselves say they don’t support above iTunes 11. The response was that they support only Windows Eyes but that doesn’t mean that Windows Eyes supports them so we have to wait for Windows Eyes to update their software. Meanwhile, where is Tim Cook’s commitment to accessibility? This is not just one app, this is the software we use to manage all our I devices. When they gave notice of the availability of a new version, could they not have put a warning that this new version does not work with screen review software or didn’t they know because they didn’t test it? Having said all that, don’t we have the responsibility of making sure things are working before we jump into them? Were some of us in a bit too much of a hurry to jump into the latest and greatest? I have moved the microphone to as close to my mouth as I can. Is there a button or something I need to press before speaking so the person can hear me? Is there a firmware update or something that fixes this issue? Is anyone else with this headset having this problem? Re: IPhone 6 and triple click Home
Well, my understanding agrees with Isaac's. I'd be curious Joseph where you get your information. My understanding is that the triple click of the home button will enable VoiceOver during initial setup, and this is true regardless of where you get your phone. If the phone has been through setup before, either at an Apple store or a carrier, then the triple click of the home button may or may not work. I've had my phone for a while, but I think I used the triple click of the home button to enable VoiceOver at the ATT store when I bought it and they were setting it up. Re: [497261] Itunes 12.1
This is obviously highly subjective. I agree NVDA is a great screen reading option for Windows, but whether it's the greatest or not depends a lot on what you need it to do. I use it at home, and prefer it in many ways to other screen readers when it comes to reading mail, surfing the web and using iTunes. Two of my last three jobs though have been in Windows shops, and I couldn't have done either of those jobs if NVDA had been my only screen reading choice for Windows. I needed highly sophisticated screen reading abilities in applications like Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes. If we're talking about comparing screen readers on Windows then I think we're getting off topic for this list. Okay, maybe this isn't true anymore to the latest and greatest phones but I know whenever about my five from Sprint, I had to have somebody enable the triple click home for voiceover, and voiceover so that I can be able to use the phone and whenever about my fat S from ATT this was also the case and asked for my four as well this may not stand true to the iPhone six or 6+ On Feb 4, 2015, at 7:43 PM, Christopher Chaltain chalt...@gmail.com wrote: Well, my understanding agrees with Isaac's. On 02/04/2015 01:58 PM, Joseph Hudson wrote: Hi, this information is only correct if you are buying from Apple directly if you're buying from a carrier, and they're activating the phone the triple click home is deactivated a does nothing. So therefore you have to going to settings general, and accessibility enter voiceover, in order to turn it on. And Isaac you might want to keep this message for future reference because what you're saying is only correct if they don't had the phone activated at a carrier.
