Re: Knfb reader update

2015-11-11 Thread Richard Turner
I recommend either the Fopydo scanning stand for $12.00 plus $3.00 shipping for
the most affordable and portable stand:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00UURH7HC/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8=142848=8-1=fopydo+scanning+stand+for+the+blind=new

Or the ScanJig, $40.00 plus about $7.00 shipping for a more heavy duty stand
that while portable, is much bulkier:

http://www.scanjig.com/

I've had or have the four major stands available and my first choice for
overall flexibility is the Fopydo stand.

IMessages and their associations?

2015-11-11 Thread Gerardo Corripio

 HI guys
Well finally I'm back! now with all the energy and predisposition to
learn all I can from the list! I got my 4S 16GB IOs7.1.1 yesterday at
last! using it on Wifi for now while I get someone to take me to the
carrier to put in the Sim Card (though I have a feeling it already came
with one since while setting it up yesterday, it gave me the option of
using IMessage and Facetime with a Spain phone number, and it didn't ask
me for a SimCard during the entire Setup process so who knows); anyway
I'm using the phone via Wifi and have it restored to how I left my 3GS
on April 7, but have a problem when sending my Dad an IMessage it marks
the Unable to send error! Might it be because his IMessages are
associated with his phone number, while I associated mine with my EMail
address? When I put in my number, then will the IMessages funcion as
they should? because I tested the IMessage with a friend and it was sent
and received OK! Thanks for info.

RE: Thank You and One More Question about Getting Contacts Off of Locked iPhone 5 with Nonfunctional Touch Screen

2015-11-11 Thread Terrie Terlau
Hi Sieghard and everyone,

Sieghard, Thank you for your response -- I appreciate you so very much. I have
the dead phone plugged in and hope it is going to back itself up to iCloud. I
think I have done this before and hope that it can find it in its heart to
automatically do so now (smile)!

I have tried with my bluetooth keyboard, but the phone is locked and doesn't
seem willing to connect.

I have one more question: if you all had an iPhone 5 with a touch screen that
does not accept touch input with or without Voice Over turned on, and if you
very much wanted to get your contacts off of said phone, would you go to the
store of your carrier (AT) or would you go to an Apple Store. I am wondering
which store is more likely to have staff and equipment that could pull
contacts off of this phone.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

Terrie who is eagerly awaiting her new iPhone 6 Plus which should arrive today!

Hi Terry,

If you had a Bluetooth keyboard connected to your iPhone you might be able to
use it. If Bluetooth is off you might be able to ask SIRI to turn it on, but of
course if you never had a Bluetooth keyboard paired with your phone that may
not work if you can’t do anything. Also, if you use iCloud backups at least you
can plug in your phone and hope that inside a 24 hour window it would at least
automatically back up to iCloud.

Hi everyone,

My iPhone 5, now three years old, has died: the touch screen no longer responds
when tapped, flicked, double tapped, etc. in Voice Over and when Voice Over is
turned off. I have ordered a new phone. But I want to get my current contacts
off of this dead phone if I can. When I plug the phone into my PC, iTunes asks
if I want the iPhone to send material to this computer. I say Yes and iTunes
seems to send a message to the phone because it vibrates. then iTunes tells me
to respond to the message on my iPhone, which of course I can't do. I foresee
an Apple Store trip in my future. However, in the meantime, is there anything I
can do to use this broken phone with iTunes?

Thanks very much for your thoughts!

Hello,

Perhaps my questions are related to my Iphone 6 and/or Ios 9.1. I'm finding
various minor issues that I'm curious about.

Some of my games no longer work. De Steno Games won't even load, Audio Archery
and Audio Run open but don't work. I've also noticed that I can only adjust
the volume when some sort of sound is coming out and not when the phone is
silent. Is there a setting for this.

No doubt I'll notice more things as time goes on. In my humble opinion I don't
think the 6 is an improvement. Since I can't see the screen I'm not crazy about
the larger size and I really don't like where the power button is. IF I have
the phone in my palm and adjust the volume it's easy to also press the power
button at the same time. I don't expect any answers...just a little rant. grin

Re: Knfb reader update

2015-11-11 Thread Mary Otten
Is the scan jig the one that you can only use with a limited number of phones?
I remember richard saying something about one of the stands that when you got a
new device, it was likely going to have to be readjusted a retooled or
something from the factory. I am waiting for my fopydo, which includes the book
attachment. I'm hoping that is as good as the folks who saw the prototype say
it is. If so, it will be great.

IOS 9.1 questions

2015-11-11 Thread Kim Samco

I don't expect any answers...just a little rant. grin

Re: IMessages and their associations?

2015-11-11 Thread Kelly Pierce
to use iMessage and Facetime, the end user must agree to associate a
piece of identifiable information, such as an e-mail address or a
phone number, to Apple. Is your father able to send iMessages to
others? While he may tell you one thing, he may not wish to
relinquish his privacy rights. I am surprised as to how many iPhone
owners have not enabled Facetime or iMessage.

Hello Gera,
A friend did a group iMessage. Ce was using number from an iPhone, I was using
an iPad with email, the third person used email with most likely a phone, and
it worked. So that isn't your issue. I would try to go into settings, messages,
and get rid of the number. Only leave your email in there as the iMessage
contact, in other words.

Did she sink with iTunes on the computer ? If she did has never did this and
check the box in iTunes to sync contacts and she choose account that did not
have contacts in it already it erased the contacts.

If not then does she backup to iCloud and have contacts turn on?

Can anyone suggest a reason why my wife’s contacts would simply disappear? She
has a new 6S plus and we have added a number of contacts and suddenly this

Hi all, does anyone know of such an app as I listed in the subject line? I also
might need help setting up this app. I have one called alarms and timers or
something like that that might do it but I need to know how to set it up and
how to set the alarms. I'd like to be able to set only one alarm that would go

RE: Thank You and One More Question about Getting Contacts Off of Locked iPhone 5 with Nonfunctional Touch Screen

2015-11-11 Thread MattFromFlorida
Do you have a case on it with a screen protector on it? I had this happen once
and did everything I could think of rebooting the phone and all that stuff. So
got to thinking and took off my case which had a screen protector built into
it. Somehow just a little bit of moister had got between the screen protector
and the screen. Hardly enough to even notice. I took a soft rag and dried it
off and rebooted the phone and when it came up the thing work like a charm.

Also if it is unlock you can hook it to the computer and iTunes and backup that
way as well. Either to the computer or to iCloud.

If you have a local Apple store you might take it in there and they might could
help you and get things up and running again.

Another way is it might be a voice over ting and a visual person might not have
any problem and could do it for you. JST

2015-11-11 Thread Richard Turner

Don,
I've had no trouble using document stand mode with the Fopydo.
The key is to make sure that batch mode is turned on and being very patient to
get the first scan to start.
You might also need to adjust the height depending on the document size, but it
worked for me with a standard 8.5 by 11 inch document at the default lowest
setting for the stand.

Hi all, does anyone know of such an app as I listed in the subject line? I also
might need help setting up this app. I have one called alarms and timers or
something like that that might do it but I need to know how to set it up and
how to set the alarms. I'd like to be able to set only one alarm that would go

Re: Voice dream library back up

2015-11-11 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

I was successful today in restoring my voice dream Reader library via file
sharing in iTunes. I needed to restore my iPhone but could not do a restore
from backup. I did not want to lose my entire VDR library and all of the
bookmarks and highlights. I followed the directions on the VDR website. The key
step that I would have missed was deleting the voice Dream reader library off
of my iPhone within file Sharing in iTunes. Anyways, I followed the directions
and it worked like a charm for me. I will paste the link below that contain the
directions. I do suggest performing an iCloud or iTunes backup just in case. It
worked for me and all of my bookmarks are in tact. I just wanted to pass it
along in case you ever need to uninstall voice Dream Reader and re-install it
due to problems.

 Hi Cara,
Well, since the unlabeled buttons are in an Apple program, I assume that is an
Apple problem, not something that the ice free folks would know about. So I

don't know why it's a Google problem or an android issue. But I wasn't sure.

In case any of you have this iCloud problem

2015-11-11 Thread Kathy Brandt

When ever I would turn my iPod touch six on after a complete shutdown, I would
be asked to verify my iCloud password. This wasn't happening on other devices.
I had reset network settings, and signed out of iCloud; the still happened,
since updating to iOS nine this weekend.since updating to iOS nine this
weekend. A rep at the regular number said this was happening to him to; he just
excepted, but given this was two and three times a day, when not experiencing
this before, I figured something had to be done about it.

A gentleman from Apple accessibility had me sign out of everything--iTunes and
App Stores, FaceTime, I-messaging, and iCloud. I then had to power off, wait a
little bit, power back on, then sign into everything. However, I still got the
alert message. The rep thought maybe it wasn't interacting with my Wi-Fi
correctly; he had me use my iPhone's personal hot spot.
After the verification went through, I rejoined my usual Wi-Fi. Knock on wood,
so far everything has been OK! Just thought I ought to pass this along.

Re: Iphone 5s and the lightning connector

2015-11-11 Thread Jan Kleinhans
Hi Sieghard
Thanks for answering this. It was indeed the wall charger, and I will see what
will happen now after setting the phone up. It makes no sense to me having the
connector fit both ways, but the phone only wanting to charge one way. The
connector is not marked, so one would not have known that, and then I would
have expected it to work like my older iphone 4s, where the cable only fits one
way. Thank you for clarifying this.

I agree you should try a different cable and, if you were charging with the
cable plugged into a laptop try a different USB port or, as Feliciano
suggested, try the wall adapter.

I have, however, heard from a friend in Germany that his 5S charges with the
cable plugged in either way, but he can only sync if he plugs it in a certain
way. If I had been him and if this was consistant across cables, I would have
returned the phone since to me this is a defect.

  Hi,

this is not normal behavior. Are you using the Apple charging cable, if so it
should charge no matter the position. Is this with the wall charger, I would
try a hard reset and see if that gets it working A hard reset will not
erase content or settings, simply refreshes the operating system. Hold the wake

another cable if you have a space, or better yet take it to apple if it is

now charging. Is this indeed the way it has to work, as one would have to mark
the connector then, especially should you not get any voiceover speech for some
reason when charging the phone? I thought I read somewhere that it did not
matter which way the connector was connected to the phone with the lightning
cables provided, so is this understanding of mine wrong then?

Any help greatly appreciated

RE: Iphone 5s and the lightning connector

2015-11-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I agree you should try a different cable and, if you were charging with the
cable plugged into a laptop try a different USB port or, as Feliciano
suggested, try the wall adapter.

I have, however, heard from a friend in Germany that his 5S charges with the
cable plugged in either way, but he can only sync if he plugs it in a certain
way. If I had been him and if this was consistant across cables, I would have
returned the phone since to me this is a defect.

Moderator Note -was- Re: Apple music on the android platform

2015-11-11 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Mary,

No worries. I would say this is only off-topic in the sense that I think you
could get way better help on this from the Eyes-Free Google Group which (as you
may already know) is a great resource for Android users. There are a lot of
knowledgeable people there. If you need a link, just let me know.

I personally have no problem with Android discussions here, as long as they
relate to iOS and Apple products. I.E. -comparisons / contrasts of features,
accessibility and such.

the more technical questions like what you’re asking here about getting
assistance with how Apple Music works on Android are just better fits for an
Android list.

Does this make sense?

Thanks for your post and glad to see that Apple Music is now available for
Android!

Cheers!

2015-11-11 Thread Don & Cher
I got it, but still have a million questions about how I accidentally changed
it and especially where you have to be when you press control-J to get the view
options, what you do next, etc. The sort by field kept showing up as a 'read
only' which said nothing according to JAWS Maybe if you can see the screen the
view options make sense, but with a screenreader it's a jungle out there :(

Hi

It is indeed with the wall charger and the cable that comes with this. The
phone is not even set up as yet, this still has to happen. I just charged it,
so we could use it, and this is when it happened having to turn the connector
around. Thanks for answering this, as I did think that it should not matter
which way the connector goes into the phone.

  Hi,
this is not normal behavior. Are you using the Apple charging cable, if so it
should charge no matter the position. Is this with the wall charger, I would
try a hard reset and see if that gets it working A hard reset will not
erase content or settings, simply refreshes the operating system. Hold the wake
sleep button and home button for about 7 seconds to do a hard reset. Try
another cable if you have a space, or better yet take it to apple if it is
new... position. I have not had this problem using Apple and Amazon Basics
cables. If the phone is in a case, try

setting up my iPhone 6S Plus

2015-11-11 Thread Vicky Collins
Hi All,

I thought I would share with you my trials and errors in setting up my AT
64GB iPhone 6S Plus purchased directly from Apple. I kind of held off a bit in
posting what I had done, as I thought I saw somewhere on twitter that AppleVis
was looking at doing something similar, but I must have misunderstood what I
had read. Anyway, I'll provide DropBox links when I finish this message And,
yes, grin, I do recall the advice I was given last year about posting DropBox
links to public lists; however, seeing as just three or four folks asked for
the demo I attempted last year, I figured I would live dangerously, at least
for a few hours. Thus, once these links no longer work, one may of course write
me privately for the files if they want.

Now, a few things before I actually give the links. First, as will be evident
as my setup process goes forth, I now realize that I should have done the
original setup of my device completely with iTunes from the start to get the
phone to readily give me the unlock message. But, seeing as I had normally set
up all my phones via iCloud, guess I just didn't pay enough attention, thus
causing me to want to do the second demonstration where I reset my phone back
to factory defaults and then looked at iTunes more closely.

Second, as eluded to before, there are two files, an approximately 99MB file
dealing with my unpacking my iPhone, as well as activating it and upgrading it
from 9.0.1 to 9.1 and then restoring it from a backup on iTunes. The second
approximately 16MB file is where I reset the iPhone back to factory defaults,
and then restore it from an iTunes backup, getting the congratulations message
about the phone being unlocked in the process. Also, as I inadvertently had set
the Braille Sense U2 Mini I was using to record these back to its default

and then I went on the web and found a place to convert it to MP3.

Third, I kept trying to figure out why I wasn't getting prompted to setup Siri

Re: setting up my iPhone 6S Plus

2015-11-11 Thread Gerardo Corripio
Wow thanks for sharing! It might serve me for when if i ever get an
IPhone 6+ someday.

El 11/11/2015 05:59 p.m., Vicky Collins escribió:

Hi All,

I thought I would share with you my trials and errors in setting up my AT
64GB iPhone 6S Plus purchased directly from Apple. I kind of held off a bit in
posting what I had done, as I thought I saw somewhere on twitter that AppleVis was
looking at doing something similar, but I must have misunderstood what I had read.
Anyway, I'll provide DropBox links when I finish this message And, yes, grin, I do
recall the advice I was given last year about posting DropBox links to public
lists; however, seeing as just three or four folks asked for the demo I attempted
last year, I figured I would live dangerously, at least for a few hours. Thus, once
these links no longer work, one may of course write me privately for the files if
they want.

Also, as I inadvertently had set
the Braille Sense U2 Mini I was using to record these back to its default
settings, the second part of this demo was originally recorded in WAV format,
and then I went on the web and found a place to convert it to MP3.

Third, I kept trying to figure out why I wasn't getting prompted to setup Siri

Fopydo and ScanJig

2015-11-11 Thread Jim Ruby
Hi,

Reading with the knfb reader and I devices:
I have a ScanJig and use it some times, curious how a Fopydo is different and
is the book attachment another purchase?
What are the pros and cons of each?

Thanks.

Re: Knfb reader update

2015-11-11 Thread Richard Turner

Hi Mary and all,
No, the ScanJig can handle a variety of phones and even full iPads, though a
full iPad is really awkward to get positioned with the camera where it needs to
be.
The one that is extremely limited as to what phone size will work with it is
the Giraffe Reader, which I have stopped recommending.
The StandScan is fine if you need the lighting it offers, but it is the most
flimbsy and limits the size of paper you can scan.
Hence, the only two I strongly recommend are Fopydo and ScanJig, and Fopydo is
my favorite because of its flexibility, and the upcoming book reading
attachment.

RE: alternative to fleksi

2015-11-11 Thread Dave Bahr
Ok, I will give it another shot, but I got stuck recently trying to use fleksi.
I am having a lot of trouble with the braille screen input on the iphone, can’t
seem to get the hang of it. I do have m-braille as well. So, it was not
heresay, fleksi locked up my phone, but that was a few months back. I’ll give
it another shot. Thanks.

RE: Thank You and One More Question about Getting Contacts Off of Locked iPhone 5 with Nonfunctional Touch Screen

2015-11-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Terrie,

I would probably go to an Apple Store first, if you go to your carrier store
you may get good help, but if they have a bunch of young kids there who all are
Android fans you may not get as much help as you would at an Apple Store.

Also, you may want to consider switching to a mail provider like Outlook.com or
gmail. Yes, you can turn on iCloud backup for contacts, but I have been very
happy with my @Outlook.com email account and the Outlook.com service in general
(what used to be Hotmail). It has come a long way since the old Hotmail days,
even the web interface is now very nicely accessible especially with the latest
version of Jaws and Exchange Active Sync just works well when it comes to
syncing contacts, mail and calendars between devices. If you had all your
contacts in your Outlook.com account all you would have to do when you get your
new phone is to set up your account and all your contacts and mail would just
be there. I know gmail does this as well, but I just never liked the IMAP
protocol compared to Exchange Active Sync. I don’t, by the way, hope this will
spark another discussion as to what’s better, it’s been discussed many times
and everybody has their preference, but all in all I just think using one of
these services is superior over using your particular provider’s email
especially since if you ever change providers it has no impact on your email
and contacts.

Good luck getting your contacts back, I guess you can just restore from your
iCloud backup when the new phone arrives and see what you get. If it didn’t
work I’d take both phones to an Apple Store and see what they can do.

Regards,

Sieghard

JST

Subject: RE: How to Back Up iPhone with Dead Touch Screen

RE: Need an app with a loud alarm sound that also has a way that I can set hourly alarms due to regulating my non-24. Also I need a way to carry my iPhone with me at all times. Thank you.

2015-11-11 Thread MattFromFlorida
Well check out the settings and if you close all menus and then there will be
several choices :All reminders, Log reminders ( which is History of completed
reminders), All Timers, Settings and help.
Under each one of these headings or tab or whatever you want to call them is
other things you can do. You really have to just play around in it. But really
look at the settings first. Also google is a lot of help with the app. If you
investigate and have specific questions maybe I can help more! I think I also
bought the in app perches that gave you a lot more tones and some other things
I think it was. It was not that much. So after you use it a little while I
think you might want to look at doing this. Please don't hesitate to ask any
thing and if I can help I will.
BTW: I don't even use the Native reminder on the phone any more.
 there

I got this today, when I saw your recommendation, and I am delighted so far!
However, I have not really worked out all the columns very well, not being very

RE: Natadmo is working:

2015-11-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mike,

Thanks for this, it took me quite a while, but I did finally manage to find it.
It is, however, at best a pain in the neck and certainly a step back from how
easy it was before where I could just find the temperature and then swipe right
to read all the other measurements.
I also don't see the "Indoor Comfort" value any more. Yes, the CO2 level is
still there, but I always liked how I could quickly see how the app analyzed
the indoor air quality taking into account temperature, CO2 level, humidity and
noise level.
I will definitely take a bit of time today and write to Carlos from Netatmo and
hopefully they are still committed to keeping the app accessible especially now
that quite a few people purchased it. They say now that the background of the
app changes depending on weather and that for sighted people there is an
indicator as to whether temperature, air pressure and so on are trending up or
down and it would be nice if they found a way to make this information
accessible. They did a nice job, but beyond that initial work it feels they
haven't really done much to improve accessibility.

Regards,
Sieghard

I just got the new natadmo app, and to get the maximum and minimum temprature,
you have your finger on the out door or indoor temprature, then tap with
another finger, and going down just a little bit, the lower is just below the
temprature, and the high is a little to the right.
At first you might go by it it is a small butten, but it does work.

exporting daisy-books from read2go

2015-11-11 Thread William Windels
Hello,
I was trying to export a daisy book from read2go on ios9.
I thought that iTunes is the only option to do so.
So, I connected my iPhone with cable to my mac and I opened iTunes 12.3.1.
With command+7, I went to the apps and there I found read2go on my iphone.
As I reminded well before, I should have a column next to the column with the
apps, where I can select the files that are stored in the app.
>From there I could copy/download the corresponding daisy book.
But here , after selecting read2go on iTunes, I saw no way to see the documents
that were stored in the app.

Any suggestions?

Kind regards,
William Windels

Re: exporting daisy-books from read2go

2015-11-11 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi William,

With many apps, once you've added documents to them, there's no way to see
those documents with iTunes file sharing. My guess is that Read2Go is one of
these. See if the app includes a Share button. If it doesn't, I don't think
you'll be able to get documents out of it.

Best,
Anna

Re: Apps on MacBook

2015-11-11 Thread Gianni
Yes there is an app store on the mac. It's best you use these apps, because
they are checked by Apple, so your mac is safe.
Yes there are some apps that can help you with facebook.

If you wish you can use facebook through safari, that's no problem.

Which apps you should have, that is very difficult for me to say. It depends on
what you want to do with your Mac.

They apps from the app store I use the most are easy audio converter and
cuesplitter.

iMessages

2015-11-11 Thread Joe
Hi, are iMessages considered paid text messages, or are they considered data
exchanges between iDevices? I hope that makes sense. I'm just curious to
know if iMessages would be billed by a carrier.

RE: iMessage

2015-11-11 Thread MattFromFlorida
iMessage only use data and if on wifi most people don't have to worry about it
if using your cell data it might impact it but not likely. Unless you are
sending a lots of video messaging.

Thanks,
