Otis Makes a Novel

2019-05-27 Thread Ken Anderson
I am reading a novel called "Deck the Hounds" by David Rosenfelt and a
little boy asked his parents what a "town drunk" is? The parents ask him
where he heard such a thing. He tells them that he heard it on a Mayberry
TV show that has Opie in it. He said this guy Otis drinks all the time and
he looks like he is going to fall down, so he wants to know why they call
him the "town drunk".

Otis and the Barber Shop

2018-08-30 Thread Ken Anderson
I have been working my brain, which doesn't take too long for me, to try to
think of a scene where we see Otis in the barber shop. I just cannot think
of a time when Otis was at Floyd's. Am I missing something?

If anyone can name a scene where we see Otis in the barber shop, please
post it. It seems strange that the writers would never have him in the
barber shop. It would be hilarious to see nervous Floyd trying to give
Otis a haircut while he has a snootful. Floyd mentions one time that he
had been in but we never saw it as far as I can recall.

Any thoughts or comments?

Otis Sues the County

2017-05-03 Thread Ken Anderson
Since I injured my knee I have gone back and watched one of my favorite
episodes, "Otis Sues the County". I made several observations and compared
it to my knee injury. Before my exact nature of my injury was diagnosed I
had X-rays, three injections, and an MRI and then was told to use crutches
for two weeks and then return to my doctor. Now Otis filed a law suit
against the county for his knee injury when he never even went to a
doctor. Attorney Neil Bentley diagnosed Otis' injury and then proceeded
with the law suit. Wasn't it strange that no one ever asked Otis to submit
medical records that would prove that he suffered injuries? Even the
county's attorney who came to the courthouse failed to ask for any medical
reports.

Curious.

Today I spoke at an Annual Senior Citizen Luncheon in the town where I
taught for 30 years. It is always such a pleasure to speak to an audience
that I know so well. They were so engaging and asked a lot of great
Mayberry questions. I did some trivia with them and they were really great
knowing the answers.

Two car shows this weekend and the weather is suppose to be beautiful.
Both shows are sponsored by college car clubs so it will be attracting a
younger crowd so I am sure there will be quite a few there who will need to
be educated. Unfortunately I will be spending most of my time sitting in a
chair.

Otis and His Cow

2016-12-29 Thread Ken Anderson
You remember ow Otis mistakenly bought a cow that he thought was a horse.
Well, one thing you may not know is that the next morning Andy let Otis out
of jail for a while so he could milk the cow. While Otis was milking old
Bessie a fly flew right into one of her ears. Otis kept right on milking
and pretty soon he noticed that the fly came out of one of Bessie's teats
and landed right in the pail of milk.

This proves just one thing. Some things go in one ear and out the udder.

P.S. I wonder if this was the same cow Otis was thinking about when he did
his pastoral mosaic work of art.

I caught an apparent contradiction concerning Otis being arrested. On 'The

On a few episodes later, "The Punch in the Nose" Andy finds a file in the

I picked up the rag and read the article while waiting in line at the grocery
store. It really is far less sensational than the attention grabbing
headlines. It might be worth remembering that the authors of the articles do
NOT get to compose the headlines on the cover. The article describes a few of
the stories in a book which will be published in November this year by Simon
Schuster (far more reputable than the Globe) titled Andy and Don: the
Making of a Friendship and a Classic American TV Show. It is written by Daniel
de Visé, an accomplished reporter and author who also happens to be Don Knott's
brother-in-law. I'm sure the rag chose to highlight the more eye-grabbing
bits from the book - no surprise there. You might want to check out the book's
listing on Amazon - and consider that neither Andy nor Don *were* the people
they portrayed as actors on the show. Like the rest of us, not perfect, in
other words. :-)

Hi Friends,
I was just watching the Donna Reed Show I DVR'd from
8-1-13 on ME-TV. The Episode was called : A Difference of Opinion originally
aired on 12-17-1959. Alex and Donna go to visit with a few other couples and
there was OTIS playing the part of Rod - I double checked the credits and it
said Hal Smith played as Rod ! It was so neat so see him dressed up in a suit
and playing a proper gentleman at a dinner party.

It reminded me what a great and diverse actor he was and how underneath the
character he played on Andy Griffith what a kind and caring man Otis really was
and how on occasion we got to see that part of Otis on some of the episodes.

I've never posted in here before, but have been reading the daily posts for
quite a few years now so I hope I did this correctly.

I thought the Andy G show was the first to come up with Otis not wanting to go
home and getting kicked out of jail against his will but it's not, I seen a
sitcom of the Ozzie and Harriet show from 1959 called the runaways showing
Otis himself not wanting to go home from the jail and the police officer
kicking him out and telling him to go home to his wife and he was threatening
to report them for being unconstitutional.

Helpful Otis Campbell

2011-06-26 Thread Ken Anderson

Otis Campbell and his wife were shopping at Foley's store, and Mrs. Campbell
decided to
steal a can of peaches. The inevitable happened and she was caught.

At the courthouse, Sheriff Taylor asked her what she had stolen.

Well Sheriff, I stole a can of peaches.

Sheriff Taylor replied, How many peaches were in the can?

She said, Six.

Sheriff Taylor then said, I will sentence you to six days in jail.

Otis stood up behind her. Sheriff , he said, helpfully,
she also stole a can of peas.

another Otis--sort of

2011-04-04 Thread jgrit1
I was watching Celebrity Apprentice last night. The Celebrities had to create
a work of Art to auction off for charity. Actor Gary Busey is on there, and he
is kind of scatter-brained. (it might be due to a head injury). Anyway for
his work or art, he painted a Water Buffalo. It looked for all the world like
Otis's Mosaic of a Cow. Just a simple animal in from of green grass and a blue
sky. Someone actually paid $5000 for it..but it was basically a donation.
Maybe Otis's cow should have been auctioned off for AA??

Thanks for all the dialog about our favorite show, and its stars! Its been
said before but this Digest is often the highlight of my day...an oasis of
small town pleasure in the midst of the jungle of a business world out there.

Otis' Mosiac

2010-08-23 Thread DAVID QUINN

All these posts the last few days got me to thinking about the episode with
Otis making a mosiac. There was a point in the middle of the episode where
Andy missed a chance to teach Opie a life lesson. When Opie and Andy are in
the living room and Andy is looking at the mosiac, Opie tells Andy that some of
his friends came over earlier that day and laughed at the mosiac. That would
have been the perfect time for Andy to explain to Opie that it is very impolite
to visit someone and laugh at their possessions. Also Andy could have pointed
out to Opie it matters very little what other people think of you or your
possessions, the important thing is how you regard yourself. OBTW, I was a
little disappointed in Andy taking the mosiac down after he told Otis he would
display it.

Schwamp Otis

2010-08-22 Thread Janet Anderson
The first episode where I saw Mr. Schwump wearing glasses, was in the episode
where Warren teaches Otis about mosaic art.

Silvia, this is off your point, but reading your post reminded me of my visit
last week to the Indiana State Fair. While in one building, my mom and I were
viewing the paintings on display. On one wall was a mosaic of a pig. Of
course, I immediately thought of Otis's cow mosaic. (I think this one of the
pig was a little better than Otis's artwork.) Then when leaving the building,
I saw an older gentleman seated on a bench. I noticed his nice, full head of
hair, which looked a bit artificial. Naturally, my mind went to Mr. Schwamp.
It's funny how many little things in everyday life make me think of TAGS--and I
don't even have to tryl!

Here is the answer to what period of the year does Otis's birthday fall. In
the first season when Jail Inspector Ralph Case comes to inspect the Mayberry
jail, both Otis and Andy mention that today is Otis' birthday. Andy even goes
out and gets Otis a cake. At the very end of the episode Andy, Barney, and
Ralph Case drive out to Luke Ranier's farm. If you look, all the trees around
the farm have lots of leaves. Therefore, the day must have been between May 1
and October 1. That is when North Carolina trees have lots of leaves.

Well, seeings how Otis has a penchant for celebrating special occasions,
like birthdays, and seeings how the legal drinking age in NC in 1941 was 18,
and seeings how Otis would never drink publicly as a minor, I'd imagine Otis
got a proper snootful on his 18th birthday. So, from his arrest record, I'd
infer that Otis was born on Sept. 23, 1923.

I don't know if any of you have seen this but its well worth checking out.
Google Map has a street view of Mount Airy... it's almost like being
there yourself and walking down the street.
All you have to do once you're in Google Maps is:
Type in Mount Airy, NC in the search Window
Click Search
Zoom in to the area you want to view
Drag and drop the little yellow guy in the top left hand corner onto the
street you want to go to.

I think I saw the tribute artist of Otis standing on the sidewalk, he's
just North of the Snappy Lunch.
Check it out; it's pretty neat being able to look around Mount Airy without
leaving home!!!

Otis and Malcolm Merriweather sightings

2008-02-03 Thread King of Mayberry
I was surprised to see our beloved Otis Campbell on The Dukes of Hazzard the
other night. He played Henry Flatt in the episode R.I.P. Henry Flatt (season
2) who conned money out of Boss Hogg and then faked his own death so he could
use the money to start a youth center in a nearby town. He wasn't drunk in that
show either. I guess he ran out of his booze that he hid at the old Carson
shack.

In another Dukes episode (Southern Comfurts season 2), Malcolm Merriweather
played a small part as Higgins, the chauffeur/butler for the Comfurt family,
second cousins to the Dukes. It was great seeing Malcolm as Higgins, Briscoe as
Jesse, and Jim Lindsey as Rosco all in the same scene together.

My son noticed last night in the episode where Barney

Otis' job

2007-08-31 Thread Paul Mulik
I've been wondering what kind of job Otis might have had. At one point we
know that he was unemployed, since he needed to get to his appointment
with Mr. Skinner.

In Hot Rod Otis he tells Andy and Barney he had taken on a night job, but
he doesn't specify what it was. Most likely he was a night watchman; it
doesn't seem like any other after dark jobs would be available in
Mayberry. Later, in Otis the Artist we learn that he is an industrious,
hard-working glue-dipper at the furniture factory.

Otis' song

2007-01-18 Thread Paul Mulik
Hey Gang,
Was kind of singing I'm sorry I broke your heart mother out loud today,
and the lady next to me wanted to know how I broke Mama's heart? Does anyone
know if that was a real song Otis was singing, and if there are other verses
that give us a clue, or was it just something he made up?

I don't think it's a real song in the way you mean; I just did a quick web
search on the title and got a few hits, but they were all Mayberry
references. Using an existing song would proably have meant paying a
royalty, something TV producers try to avoid.

On page 250 of Neal Brower's excellent book Mayberry 101, writer Everett
Greenbaum is quoted as stating that the title of the song was specified in
the script (of Citizen's Arrest), but my guess is that Hal Smith made up the
tune himself.

RE: What happened to Otis

2006-09-26 Thread Seaholm, Dale E
In reference to Otis disappearing, I did see Hal Smith on several
episodes of The Doris Day Show, Season 1. This season was 1968-1969.
In both episodes that I'm aware of, he played an Otis-like drunk
neighbor of Doris'. The most recent time, Doris ran out of gas in her
car, and she syphoned gas from Otis car, with Doris insisting that he
shouldn't drive his own car drunk. So he fell asleep in the trunk,
while she took of (in her own car, of course) and babysat the neighbor
kids. One of those kids was a 6-year-old Jodie Foster (whose brother
Buddy was on Mayberry RFD). So there exist lots of hidden Mayberry
references.

what happened to Otis

2006-09-26 Thread Paul Mulik
Does anyone know what the reason is for Otis no longer being on TAGS in
season 7. They don't even have a send off for him.

The way Hal Smith told it, one of the executives at General Foods (The Show's
sponsor) was an alcoholic who disapproved of seeing drunks on TV. Even though
Otis was always portrayed as a lovable, harmless character, this executive
eventually pressured the producers into dropping him from the cast. Otis
appears in only 2 color episodes: Otis the Artist, in which he takes up the
hobby of mosaics, and Otis the Deputy in which Andy and Howard are held
captive in the old Carson shack. The reason they never had a send off for
Otis is that there was always a slim chance he would be able to return in
future episodes.

Otis also appears in 1986's Return to Mayberry. By this time, he has sobered
up completely and is gainfully employed, working as an ice cream man.

Otis Campbell

2006-09-15 Thread Ken Anderson
I think I finally figured out the real reason Otis spends so much time
drinking and staying at the Mayberry courthouse. In an episode of The
Adams Family this morning, Otis was the presiding judge on a case against
Mama Adams. It was the worst experience of his life, and at the end of the
episode it was said that he was a judge at a county fair. Now apparently he
began to drink as a result of his experience with the Adams Family. His
drinking problem led to his losing his judgeship, which in turn caused him a
great deal of embarrassment. So he relocated to his hometown of Mayberry
where he continued his drinking. Seeing he had been a judge and spent more
than twenty years of his life in a courthouse, it would be only fitting
that he would return to a courthouse when he had a snootful. Now whether
or not this solves the mystery of Otis' drinking, I can't really say, but I
think it makes a sound theory.
