Otis Makes a Novel
I am reading a novel called "Deck the Hounds" by David Rosenfelt and a little boy asked his parents what a "town drunk" is? The parents ask him where he heard such a thing. He tells them that he heard it on a Mayberry TV show that has Opie in it. He said this guy Otis drinks all the time and he looks like he is going to fall down, so he wants to know why they call him the "town drunk". Otis and the Barber Shop
I have been working my brain, which doesn't take too long for me, to try to think of a scene where we see Otis in the barber shop. I just cannot think of a time when Otis was at Floyd's. Am I missing something? If anyone can name a scene where we see Otis in the barber shop, please post it. It seems strange that the writers would never have him in the barber shop. It would be hilarious to see nervous Floyd trying to give Otis a haircut while he has a snootful. Floyd mentions one time that he had been in but we never saw it as far as I can recall. Otis Sues the County
Since I injured my knee I have gone back and watched one of my favorite episodes, "Otis Sues the County". I made several observations and compared it to my knee injury. Before my exact nature of my injury was diagnosed I had X-rays, three injections, and an MRI and then was told to use crutches for two weeks and then return to my doctor. Now Otis filed a law suit against the county for his knee injury when he never even went to a doctor. Attorney Neil Bentley diagnosed Otis' injury and then proceeded with the law suit. Wasn't it strange that no one ever asked Otis to submit medical records that would prove that he suffered injuries? Even the county's attorney who came to the courthouse failed to ask for any medical reports. Curious. Today I spoke at an Annual Senior Citizen Luncheon in the town where I taught for 30 years. It is always such a pleasure to speak to an audience that I know so well. They were so engaging and asked a lot of great Mayberry questions. I did some trivia with them and they were really great knowing the answers. Two car shows this weekend and the weather is suppose to be beautiful. Both shows are sponsored by college car clubs so it will be attracting a younger crowd so I am sure there will be quite a few there who will need to be educated. Otis and His Cow
You remember ow Otis mistakenly bought a cow that he thought was a horse. Well, one thing you may not know is that the next morning Andy let Otis out of jail for a while so he could milk the cow. While Otis was milking old Bessie a fly flew right into one of her ears. Otis kept right on milking and pretty soon he noticed that the fly came out of one of Bessie's teats and landed right in the pail of milk. This proves just one thing. Some things go in one ear and out the udder. P.S. I wonder if this was the same cow Otis was thinking about when he did his pastoral mosaic work of art. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Re: Andy Unmasked and Otis Impersonator's Health
Re: While in our local Walmart today, we noticed Andy Griffith'spicture on the front of The Globe with the headline Andy Unmasked. Italleged Andy had severe paranoia; went into rages and once beat Don Knotts toa pulp. We do not read these rag magazines and have no intention of readingthis one. Of course we don't believe a word of it! I picked up the rag and read the article while waiting in line at the grocery store. It really is far less sensational than the attention grabbing headlines. It might be worth remembering that the authors of the articles do NOT get to compose the headlines on the cover. The article describes a few of the stories in a book which will be published in November this year by Simon Schuster (far more reputable than the Globe) titled Andy and Don: the Making of a Friendship and a Classic American TV Show. It is written by Daniel de Visé, an accomplished reporter and author who also happens to be Don Knott's brother-in-law. I'm sure the rag chose to highlight the more eye-grabbing bits from the book - no surprise there. You might want to check out the book's listing on Amazon - and consider that neither Andy nor Don *were* the people they portrayed as actors on the show. All these posts the last few days got me to thinking about the episode with Otis making a mosiac. There was a point in the middle of the episode where Andy missed a chance to teach Opie a life lesson. When Opie and Andy are in the living room and Andy is looking at the mosiac, Opie tells Andy that some of his friends came over earlier that day and laughed at the mosiac. That would have been the perfect time for Andy to explain to Opie that it is very impolite to visit someone and laugh at their possessions. Also Andy could have pointed out to Opie it matters very little what other people think of you or your possessions, the important thing is how you regard yourself. It was Otis's birthday when the inspector came to Town. Now, what gives away the time of year in this episode? Otis Trivia
Here is the answer to what period of the year does Otis's birthday fall. In the first season when Jail Inspector Ralph Case comes to inspect the Mayberry jail, both Otis and Andy mention that today is Otis' birthday. Andy even goes out and gets Otis a cake. At the very end of the episode Andy, Barney, and Ralph Case drive out to Luke Ranier's farm. If you look, all the trees around the farm have lots of leaves. Therefore, the day must have been between May 1 and October 1. That is when North Carolina trees have lots of leaves. Orville Hendricks - Your neighborly butter and egg man. Re: Otis Trivia
Well, seeings how Otis has a penchant for celebrating special occasions, like birthdays, and seeings how the legal drinking age in NC in 1941 was 18, and seeings how Otis would never drink publicly as a minor, I'd imagine Otis got a proper snootful on his 18th birthday. So, from his arrest record, I'd infer that Otis was born on Sept. 23, 1923. This Monday morning on TV Land, The Leave it to Beaver Show, the story was about Beaver not eating his Brussels Sprouts, The family was going to a football game and they were in a restaurant and the family was served Brussels sprouts, and again Beaver did not want to eat them. the manager came over to see what was going on. and the Manager was TAGS Otis Campbell. This must to have been before Otis started drinking. Otis' song
Hey Gang, Was kind of singing I'm sorry I broke your heart mother out loud today, and the lady next to me wanted to know how I broke Mama's heart? Does anyone know if that was a real song Otis was singing, and if there are other verses that give us a clue, or was it just something he made up? I don't think it's a real song in the way you mean; I just did a quick web search on the title and got a few hits, but they were all Mayberry references. Using an existing song would proably have meant paying a royalty, something TV producers try to avoid. On page 250 of Neal Brower's excellent book Mayberry 101, writer Everett Greenbaum is quoted as stating that the title of the song was specified in the script (of Citizen's Arrest), but my guess is that Hal Smith made up the tune himself. --Paul Mulik P.S. Seems there are several Pauls on this list these days, so I figure I'll start signing my last name. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://mail.wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Floyd Otis...
OK, here's the definitive on this. They were both in: Andy Saves Barney's Morale, Alcohol and Old Lace, Quiet Sam, Crime-Free Mayberry, Goodbye Sheriff Taylor, Otis Sues The County, The Rehab of Otis. Now let me temper this with - I sorted cheated! Got the info from Inside Mayberry by Dan Harrison Bill Habeeb, a very informative book, though I found that when I compiled my Mayberry muscis CD's there were some missing from their list. So this may not be so definitive after all! Oh, and neither of these gentlemen were in the last season. Also Otis made only one appearance in seasons 6 and 7 and only 4 in the fifth season... tom ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://mail.wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Otis and Floyd appear together in the episode Otis Sues the County. Floyd is the star witness when Otis slips on his coat and falls down, injuring his knee. Otis Floyd
Bee in New Concord asked if Otis Floyd were ever in the same scene. My first reaction was.of course. Then when I tried to think of any I couldn't. RE: What happened to Otis
In reference to Otis disappearing, I did see Hal Smith on several episodes of The Doris Day Show, Season 1. This season was 1968-1969. In both episodes that I'm aware of, he played an Otis-like drunk neighbor of Doris'. The most recent time, Doris ran out of gas in her car, and she syphoned gas from Otis car, with Doris insisting that he shouldn't drive his own car drunk. So he fell asleep in the trunk, while she took of (in her own car, of course) and babysat the neighbor kids. One of those kids was a 6-year-old Jodie Foster (whose brother Buddy was on Mayberry RFD). So there exist lots of hidden Mayberry references. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://mail.wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
what happened to Otis
Does anyone know what the reason is for Otis no longer being on TAGS in season 7. They don't even have a send off for him. The way Hal Smith told it, one of the executives at General Foods (The Show's sponsor) was an alcoholic who disapproved of seeing drunks on TV. Even though Otis was always portrayed as a lovable, harmless character, this executive eventually pressured the producers into dropping him from the cast. Otis appears in only 2 color episodes: Otis the Artist, in which he takes up the hobby of mosaics, and Otis the Deputy in which Andy and Howard are held captive in the old Carson shack. The reason they never had a send off for Otis is that there was always a slim chance he would be able to return in future episodes. Otis also appears in 1986's Return to Mayberry. By this time, he has sobered up completely and is gainfully employed, working as an ice cream man. --Paul ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://mail.wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Otis Campbell
I think I finally figured out the real reason Otis spends so much time drinking and staying at the Mayberry courthouse. In an episode of The Adams Family this morning, Otis was the presiding judge on a case against Mama Adams. It was the worst experience of his life, and at the end of the episode it was said that he was a judge at a county fair. Now apparently he began to drink as a result of his experience with the Adams Family. His drinking problem led to his losing his judgeship, which in turn caused him a great deal of embarrassment. So he relocated to his hometown of Mayberry where he continued his drinking. Seeing he had been a judge and spent more than twenty years of his life in a courthouse, it would be only fitting that he would return to a courthouse when he had a snootful. Now whether or not this solves the mystery of Otis' drinking, I can't really say, but I think it makes a sound theory. Kenneth G.
