Trivia - Perry Mason character before TAGS

2021-09-20 Thread Harriet Browder
A post on the Perry Mason page….or in Floyd’s words – The things you don’t know.

Today's episode "The Case of the Frantic Flyer" features a character named
Andrew "Andy" Taylor which was aired just five weeks before The Danny Thomas
Show episode "Danny Meets Andy Griffith" in which Sheriff Andy Taylor of
Mayberry (played by Andy Griffith) made his television debut.

PS – the character of Andrew Taylor is found dead at the beginning of the show,
so don’t expect to see a credit in IMDB. No actor played Taylor.

mayors, episode and character names

2019-07-12 Thread Margaret Bentle
Hello everybody,

Welcome to Tennessee Don Good.
I said this in an earlier post that I live in Davidson County in Tennessee.
The mayor of Nashville is also the county mayor. But there are some small
city mayors inside of Davidson county and city aldermen/women. The city
mayors and aldermen usually don't get along too well with the county mayor.

Scooter the episode you are looking for is 'Andy and Opie's Pal, season 4
episode 14. Barney is talking to Andy about the Apricot Queen.

While watching the episode 'Banjo-playing Deputy', season 5 episode 32, I
noticed something I had never noticed before. When Hope Summers and Mary
Lansing come in to complain about the Sultan's Favorite dance. Andy greets
them as Miss Edwards and Miss Lukens, but in the credits they are listed as
Miss Bedloe and Miss Roundtree. Curious, curious, curious.

Ken how is your indigestion?

Have a Mayberry kind of day.

Character growth

2017-08-08 Thread Daniel Santos

Think of all the characters that evolved thru out the show. In addition to
Goober...his cousin Gomer started out as a gas jockey became a master mechanic
and eventually joined the Marines. Barney started as Andy's cousin who was
chosen deputy, and moved on to the big city police department where he was in
charge of fingerprints than went on to his dream job of being a detective
though a slightly inept one. Sam the farmer went on to be on the town council
as did Howard and Ellie the first woman councilman. Andy himself married and
moved on to the big city.
Can anyone think of any others.

My Most Unforgettable Character
An Essay By Cheryl

Lydia Croswaithe:

She was a woman ahead of her time. Why when I was a girl, all of the teen
magazines said a girl should talk about what a boy wants to talk about to get
him to like her. We should show interest in what he is interested in. Well not
our Lydia. She spoke up for herself. She hated the guitar and she hated to
chit-chat and she wasn't afraid to speak up about it. She was quick to tell you
she is not interested in gambling, doesn't play bridge and can't eat pretzels
because they lay on her chest. What a gal!

On the other hand, she is so narcissistic as to think everybody should walk
instead of ride just because SHE feels nauseous from eating too much candy. She
thinks six people should not go to a movie because one of the six (she) has
already seen it. She thinks that just because SHE doesn't dance that all
members of the party shouldn't. They should just sit around the table and talk.
And of course the whole group can't go bowling because SHE has a bad back.

So. Assertive or inconsiderate? History will be the judge.

The Most Interesting Mayberry Character I Have Ever Known

2015-03-21 Thread Ken Anderson
The Most Interesting Mayberry Character I Have Ever Known

The most interesting Mayberry character I have ever known is Ernest T.
Bass. He is a strange little man who lives in the hills outside of
Mayberry. He lives all by himself except for a few raccoons, squirrels,
and other animals. He can do some very interesting things. He twangs when
he talks because he talks through his nose – that way he can talk whilst he
eats. He also can come into rooms very quit and he doesn’t spill food when
he eats. He enjoys singing and pounding on an empty kerosene can while he
serenades Charlene Darling, a neighbor girl who he wants to court. He has
a Mother Figure who lives in Mayberry who is a teacher. One really
interesting thing about Ernest T. Bass is that he throws rocks. The
interesting thing is that he throws them through windows. Sometimes he
will even throw a brick. Poor Ernest T. doesn’t have much luck with
girls. Even though he can read a little and he knows his boundaries and
can do a little ciphering with his feet, the girls in the mountain still
consider him to be ignorant. There are many more interesting things I
could say about Ernest T. Bass, but these were the things that I thought
were the most interesting.

It was brief, it was in 1987, and it was in his home in Beverly Hills. He was
drunk but feeling fine and light on his feet, I spent an afternoon with Lee Van
Cleef (one of the carnival bad guys) and his wife. They lived in a ranch style
home with a long family room. On one long side was picture windows overlooking
a garden. The other side was wall to wall photos. Every single photo was from
his dying scenes from his movies. Some color, some black and white, no two from
the same movie. I noticed no other photos of him throughout, just those dying
scenes.most interesting.

RE: Mayberry character playing a character

I mean when a Mayberry CHARACTER played a character

Well, Barney played the peace pipe smoking Naugatuck and what Indian was Andy?
Does Barney dressed like Mrs. Cox of the 3rd grade count? How about when he
played Mrs. Magruder's sister (or was it cousin?). Does Aunt Bee count when
she dressed up like a swinging floozy for Prof. St. John? Does Otis count when
he was dressed as a Mayberry Deputy? Or Ernest T. Bass dressed as a Mayberry
deputy to get his uniform? If Otis and Mr. Bass count then I guess the visiting
Jerry (Jerry Van Dyke) would count as playing a Mayberry deputy when he put on
a uniform and tried to arrest the criminals at the carnival. Do regular
citizens count if they are sworn in as Mayberry deputies? How about in
Convicts at Large when Big Maude claimed the three were Girl Scouts? When Opie
put on a sticky mustache he asked Andy if Andy knew who he was. What character
was Opie portraying?

And what about Mayberry deputies? Just how many have we seen?

Variously spelled character names

2014-02-05 Thread paulmulik
Here is a trivia question that I think will be a real challenge for even the
best trivia experts.

Casual fans of TAGS will often misspell Aunt Bee’s name as B-E-A. Every
diehard fan knows that it is always spelled B-E-E on The Show. It can be seen
spelled that way on screen in numerous episodes, and it is always spelled
B-E-E, and never B-E-A. (Francis Bavier did spell it B-E-A when she signed
autographs -- but I digress.) Just remember, “I before E except after C, E
before N in chicken, and E after E in Aunt Bee.” (That was not the trivia
question.)

THIS is the challenge: Name a regular, recurring character whose name is
spelled two different ways ON SCREEN in different episodes of TAGS. By
“regular, recurring character” I mean the same character played by the same
actor in four or more episodes. I can think of two correct answers.

Andy character changes

2013-08-30 Thread Janet Anderson
I also see a change in Andy after the BW epidodes- I think without Don
Knotts playing a complemenary role, Andy seemed to
feel a sense of frusration and lack of character fulfillment.
Someone on the bulletin board once?characterized the changes in Andy as 1. hick
Andy 2. the calm voice of reason, and in the
color episodes 3. angry Andy. I think that sums it up pretty well...

Eric, this issue has been discussed at length at various other times on the
digest, and it is an interesting thing to ponder. Now, we know from Andy
himself that the more clownish, hick characterization of Andy Taylor was
deliberately changed when Andy realized that he needed to play straight man to
Don's increasingly comic rendering of Barney. But the change in Andy's
character during the color years has, to my knowledge, never been explicitly
addressed by any of those involved with the show. (And if it has, I hope
someone will speak up.) I think there has to be a lot of truth in the fact
that Don Knotts's departure from the show had a profound effect on Andy
Griffith and that the show just wasn't as much fun for him after Don left. It
is apparent to even a casual viewer that Andy and Don had tremendous chemistry
together and played off one another brilliantly. There have been lots of great
comic teams in show business history--Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy,
Martin and
Lewis, George Burns and Gracie Allen, etc., etc.--but I think Andy Griffith
and Don Knotts rank right up there with the best, despite the fact that they
were never considered an official team. The writers of TAGS certainly had a
big part in this, though we also know that Andy and Don often came up with bits
on their own to add to the script. So, Eric, your reasoning is, in my opinion,
quite valid.

But there's one variable that we've never really accounted for, and that is the
role that the writers played in Andy Taylor's transformation after Don left. I
realize that many of the regular writers from the first five seasons didn't
continue into the color years, so there were different writers at work, which
could partly explain it. But what I wonder is, were the writers given specific
instruction about Andy's character? Andy Griffith, as an actor, could
interpret the lines given him, but the lines themselves and the stories also
contribute to how we see Andy in a different light during the color years. So
I guess my question is, was this change to Andy's character as deliberate as
the change from comic to comic foil early in the show's run? Or was it an
evolving of the character that just happened due to changing circumstances?
I'd like to hear others' thoughts on this.

a. He is a bully.

3. Opie had to eat his peanut butter sandwich without milk.

Now anyone who would do that do a sweet little guy like Opie has just got

name Joe Layton (Con man/Intercontinental News in Crime-free Mayberry) when
he was telling a story about working with Andy in The Lost Colony so that
character's name came from Andy's theater work pre-TAGS. I don't think the
original Joe Layton was another actor, but someone involved in the production
of The Lost Colony.

Re: character names when actors are spotted elsewhere

In a message dated 8/30/2011 11:00:18 A.M. Central Daylight Time,
wbmutbb-requ...@wbmutbb.com writes:

As has been mentioned on here before, the first episode features Frances
Bavier. Notice I did not say I saw Aunt Bea on Alfred Hitchcock -- it
always bugs me a little when somebody says something like I saw Floyd and
Mayor Stoner in an old western movie. Use the actors' names, folks. If you
don't know them, look them up on IMDb, it's not hard, and you'll learn
something new
Good point, but identifying people by their character names is a common
short hand practice for reminding people who may not be so familiar or
recognize them right off the bat, about their best known roles. My daughter,
for
instance, probably wouldn't react if I said Hey, that's Frances Bavier!
during the dinner scene in The Day the Earth Stood Still, but if I said
Hey, it's Aunt Bee! she knows exactly who I mean. Hey, it's Frances
Bavier, the lady who used to play Aunt Bee on 'The Andy Griffith Show!' is
just too wordy for that occasion IMHO.

Many of us who do that do know the actors' names. I could see where that
might be a little glaring here in the digest, however, where almost all of
us know these actors by name.

Secondly, it's almost like a joke. I know pop culture critics back in
1997-98 said it wasn't unusual to sit in a theater playing Titanic and hear
someone say Calling Dr. Bombay, emergency come right away! when Bernard
Fox appeared on screen. Then again, I have yet to hear any reports of
someone saying, It's Malcolm Meriwether, I hope Ernest T. isn't on that
boat,
he'll kill him!

Question about Warren Parker (Harlan Fergus/Mr. Meldrum character)

2011-04-25 Thread David and Angela Forbus
I need some trivia assistance:  I've been collecting TAGS, Twlight Zone, The
Fugitive, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents episodes on DVD, as well as my favorite
one-eyed detective, Columbo.  While watching Columbo season 3's Publish or
Perish episode, with Jack Cassidy playing the main guest character, Riley
Greenleaf, I noticed Riley's butler at his mansion was played by  Warren
Parker,
who played Mayberry's Bank President Town Treasurer, first as Harlan Fergus
(the episode when Frank Myers bond nearly bankrupts Mayberry), then later cast
as Mr. Meldrim (or Meldrum) in several episodes.

But he's not listed anywhere online or anywhere else for that matter as even
being in this episode.  He said a few lines, and seemed somewhat disgusted and
annoyed with the role.  when they speak a few lines, they generally are posted
on the credits.  I watched the episode several times, and swear it is him.  If
anybody else gets a chance to watch this excellent Columbo episode, please
verify this, if you get the chance.  All of the 1970's Columbo's were great,
especially the 3 episodes with the brilliant Jack Cassidy, RIP.

This is bugging me.  I may even contact the Screen Actors Guild to verify it
was
him, and I'm as anti-union as they come.

I guess you could say this is turning into a real compelsion.

TAGS mystery character

2011-02-05 Thread Sheryl McBride

I just recently learned of an interesting mystery on the Andy Griffith show. I
read about someone on Facebook offering a reward
to anyone who could identify the actor that portrayed Mr. Shwump in a couple of
episodes. The man stated on Facebook that no one
could seem to find out his real name, as he wasn't listed in the credits. I
remember that he appeared in an episode on Gomer Pyle, USMC
titled Gomer, the Welsh Rarebit Fiend. Thinking I had possibly solved the
mystery, I checked the end credits, and his name wasn't listed.
If anyone comes up with the name and identity of the actor who played Mr.
Shwump, please let me know.

Good topic Ken!
It's hard to choose between Harriet down at the Bank and Clara. On the one
hand, being a non-practicing banker by profession, I would love to be in the
banking business in Mayberry where it was a real, service oriented, community
serving bank. On the other hand, Clara had a nice life as a housewife, was
well taken care of by her late husband, whom she truly loved and missed, and
was an accomplished lady - organist/pianist/musician, master gardener and

I like the ideas of being Laura Lee Hobbs at the Dime Store or Ellie at the
Drug Store. Those are happening places in Mayberry so I'm sure there'd be
lots of interesting occasions. That got me to thinking about female
character's places of employment. There's the langirie shop, but that
atmosphere seemed furtile ground for gossip. The diner, but having
waitressing experience I know how hard that can be. County nurses had to
put up with stubborn farmers. Teachers, maybe, as long as Ernest T didn't
try for another diploma. Sarah knew everything, but I worry about her
staying indoors all the time. The Beauty Parlor, Library or Bank - probably
all nice places to work.

Then I decided that being Millie at Boysingers Bakery was the best fit for
me. You'd get to meet people and help with happy occasions like birthday
party cakes. You could break a few cookies and dent a cake every now and
then for the kids. Plus the Boysingers probably let you take home the extra
cream buns and donuts that didn't sell.

interesting take on a beloved character

2010-10-08 Thread Bev Daly
Hi Fellow Mayberryites -

I read the digest every morning but have never posted anything. I received
this thru email this morning and thought you all would find it interesting
as well.

The Rest of the Story

Let me tell you, Jesse hated this job. And you would too, If you had to do
it. Jesse was a chicken plucker. That's right. He stood on a line in a
chicken factory and spent his days pulling the feathers off dead chickens so
the rest of you wouldn't have to. It wasn't much of a job.

But at the time, Jesse didn't think he was much of a person. His father was
a brute of a man. His dad was actually thought to be mentally ill and
treated Jesse rough all of his life. Jesse's older brother wasn't much
better. He was always picking on Jesse and beating him up. Yes, Jesse
grew up in a very rough home in West Virginia . Life was anything but
easy. And he thought life didn't hold much hope for him. That's why he
was standing in this chicken line, doing a job that darn few people wanted.
In addition to all the rough treatment at home, it seems that Jesse was
always sick. Sometimes it was real physical illness, but way too often it
was all in his head. He was a small child, skinny and meek. That sure
didn't help the situation any. When he started to school, he was the object
of every bully on the playground. He was a hypochondriac of the first
order. For Jesse, tomorrow was not always something to be looked forward
to. But, he had dreams He wanted to be a ventriloquist. He found books on
ventriloquism.

He practiced with sock puppets and saved his hard earned dollars until he
could get a real ventriloquist dummy When he got old enough, he joined the
military. And even though many of his hypochondriac symptoms persisted, the
military did recognize his talents and put him in the entertainment corp.
That was when his world changed. He gained confidence. He found that he
had a talent for making people laugh, and laugh so hard they often had
tears in their eyes. Yes, little Jesse had found himself.

You know, folks, the history books are full of people who overcame a
handicap to go on and make a success of themselves, but Jesse is one of the
few I know of who didn't overcome it. Instead he used his paranoia to make
a million dollars, and become one of the best-loved characters of all time
in doing it! Yes, that little paranoid hypochondriac, who transferred his
nervousness into a successful career, still holds the record for the most
Emmy's given in a single category. The wonderful, gifted, talented, and
nervous comedian who brought us

Barney Fife

was

Jesse Don Knotts.

NOW YOU KNOW, THE REST OF THE STORY

rock band/Mayberry character

wbmutbb-requ...@wbmutbb.com writes:

What Mayberry resident had the same name as a popular rock band at the

Well, our Sheriff Andy Taylor apparently left Mayberry in the early 80s
and joined the pop rock band Duran Duran as a guitarist. But since Andy
Taylor is not the name of the band, that is not likely what the
pollster was looking for.

My other answer, would be from RFD--Alice Ghostly played housekeeper
Alice Cooper. But apparently her doppleganger grew a foot taller and let
her red locks go black and added lots of eyeliner to become Rock artist
Alice Cooper with the hit School's Out. Now again, this may not be the
right answer, since rocker Alice Cooper really was not the name of a
band, but a singer/frontman instead.

All of the above came from Gomer's suggestion to think under a
bucket--let me know if it paid off!

Peace,
Phil B.

I never read yet anywhere in my 18 months of Digest reading, the name
Arthur Malet. He is going to be 82 in 2 weeks. He made two memorable
Mayberry shows and he stands out as Purvis in Battle of Mayberry but as a
vagrant in Lost and Found, who can forget his memorable bit. he had that
goofy look, great comical features for buffonery. He reminds me to a degree
of Richard Jury. He had a great career as character actor in some films but
he had a great body of tv work. One film if you ever get to see it is
Convicts 4 1962. he's a storekeeper a peepsqueeks a milksop type from the
30s who is murdered in a holdup. Its a highlight and a drama for this actor.
But the vagrant in Lost and Found is so unforgettable. His far fetched story
of stealing that broach and do you notice Aunt Bee's most convincing
gullible look of believability as she listons to this hogwash. Its a classic
look for Aunt Bee. Then again that episode itself was classic. Aunt Bee all
upset with Goober and Warren in the kitchen. Also in Battle of Mayberry,
note Arthur Malet on the classic Mayberry bench out front with our Mayberry
men brooding over the true story of the battle. Arthur Malet just another
forgotton unsung hero who deserves attention. He's another grand Mayberry
resident who we saw or well he was a resident once and a bum the next.
Either way he's always a joy to watch and liston to. Happy 82nd birthday
Arthur Malet from Allan Newsome , our Mayberry readers and from me, Tom
Kessel Col.Tim's Protege reject. With the loss of Fred and Clarence Earp
(Dempsey) we are happy youre still with us. god bless you all.

out of character Aunt Bee and secrets

2009-07-23 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
I enjoyed the discussion about Aunt Bee being out-of-Character and
dropping the vase on the purring sound.

I remember the story also that Frances Bavier said she would never say
underwear out loud-but there she was on the bus hollering at Andy in
front of Peggy( I think Peggy was there) about clean underwear.

The other instance that sticks out for me with Aunt Bee out of character
..was when she was upset with Barney over the motorcycle and she
recounts a scene in a movie where they strung a wire across a road about
neck high. I just can't imagine her suggesting such a thing for Barney,
as clothes-lining him (or worse) as he is riding by in his cycle. She
really took off the white gloves for that one!!

Does anyone else recall any great secrets in Mayberry?? (from my post
the other day about Opie being safe). I guess the safe combination
would have to go down as a great secret, since nobody remembered it, and
they had to cut in that back door. The true story of the Battle of
Mayberry was a big secret until Opie exposed it.

I know, you all remember some secrets, but your part of the virtual
Wildcats so I can't tell ya is the tick a lock that we still live
by.

After the big Gold Truck fiasco, secrets were pretty hard to keep, I
guess. DO you know what they're saying about Myra Koontz at the

I like that idea. I like Mary Grace. Mary Grace Canfield played her role

George in The Lost Colony. That names was used for the Intercontinental News
photographer / safe cracker in Crime-free Mayberry.

Jeff

It would be quite a coincidence for the writers to come up with this name
out of thin air twice, so I wondered if this was a reference to a real-life
Ralph Baker that Andy knew.? Is anyone aware of this?

2009-03-20 Thread Jim Sheila Henderson
Aunt Bee's character was a good one. She showed mercy, when needed, and showed
a little bit of anger, when necessary. She was an excellent actress, because
not only did she play the sweet Aunt Bee, but she could play a REAL mean person
! In an old episode of The Lone Ranger she played a mean mama that had mean
sons. She was awful and I almost hated her! She was THAT good an actress !

Thanks to Joe, Allan and Richard for the page on Joe Hamilton.  Also, thanks to
Tom Kessel for getting more interest started in the character actors from

greatly lacking without the Howard McNear's, Hal Smith's, Joe Hamilton's, Hope

character actor,Andy's broken wrist

2008-10-02 Thread eric swolgaard
Do any of the old timers out there know who played the extra who showed up in a
lot of TAGS episodes and had no speaking parts-He was an older gentleman with
moustache and prominent nose and looked almost of Lebanese or mediteranean
extraction. I remember seeing him as the house painter on Aunt Bee the
warden. Also on many crowd shots throughout the episodes. After many viewings
of these shows, one starts to notice these things!
Also, any ideas on how Andy Griffith apparantly broke his wrist as shown on two
earlier episodes? I thought I read something about a fit of temper on set,
however I can't say for sure.

Character actor

2008-08-20 Thread MERRILL JOHNSON JR
Hi, I have been watching quite a few of my DVD's lately and have noticed
another character actor that appears in alot of episodes.I was wondering if any
of you trained experts can tell me his name. I watched Barney Gets His Man
today and he played officer Johnson. He also is driving the truck that hits
Malcomb Meriwether while he is reading his map. And he appears at the beginning
of an episode that Andy puts the lipstick on Barney's face. He gets out of his
truck and Barney tells him to move it and he blows Barney a kiss. I have seen
him in a few others as well. Just curious to his story. Did he know Danny
Thomas?? Andy??. Thanks in advance.

Andy's Character/Serious Line...

2008-08-07 Thread Kristi Phillips
To echo another poster's message about Tom K. I also enjoy his messages.  I
think they are very thought-provoking and informative.  I enjoy reading the
descriptions of the scenes from specific TAGS episodes about Andy's or another
character's facial expressions, or when Andy Taylor for a split second becomes
Andy Griffith -- being visually impaired these little things I miss in the
episodes.  Now, I can go back and watch them at a closer look and see that
particular look or scene.  Thank you for pointing these out.  If there are
anymore, do not hesitate to post them, as I like the read about them.  Also, I
like hearing about Tom's encounters with character actors over the years,
whether it be by phone, letter or in person.  Those had to be wonderful,
memorable experiences for him.  He got to do what probably most people from
that time dreamed about (meeting or talking to their favorite actor/actress).
Most of the people he has mentioned in his
posts have passed on now, but he has great memories of conversations with them
or letters from them that will never be taken away.  Thank you for sharing
these times with us, and me.
In answer to the question, what is the most serious line of TAGS?  Well, I
think it was from Opie, the Birdman.  I don't have the exact wording, but I
think the dialogue went something like this:
Opie:  The cage sure looks empty, Paw.
Andy:  But don't the trees seem mighty full.

Tom's comment about character actor

2008-07-31 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
One more memorable character was. Ruth McDevitt formerly of Mrs.
Peepers fame in her role as Edith. Pendleton. In several later shows
Helens Past and espesially Emmetts Anniversary. Was she funny as a fuddy
duddy old snoop and in Emmett's Anniversary.
Look at her facial expressions trying to convince Martha to open up the
present or trying to comfort a tearful Martha from accepting the
possibility our beloved Emmett might be having a fling with Flora. -I
love the classic lines this gifted character actress was given such as
Yes I see what you mean one last GASP or just her sympathetic blurting
out the name Martha to the tearful Martha back at the Taylor home.
The writers from TAGS were wise to utilize the talents of such
performers by giving them a simple line then allow like in Ruth's case a
chance to embellish it and run away with it.You certainly don't know how
to keep a secret.is another prime example.its a shame we didn't see more
of this gifted character actress Like she once said to Andy Set up the
card table for dominos Tom Kssl
Tom Kssl, I want to thank you from bringing this character actress to my
attention. We're all familiar with actors like Allen Melvin and Mary
Lansing (Martha Clark) for their many Black and White apperances..but
after thinking about this lady, and watching one of these episodes, you
are absolutely right. She was really a gem. She did quite a lot with
just a little bit of dialogue. She was an excellent Fuddy Duddy!! I
would have to say that I like her better than Howard's Mother..another
fuddy duddy.
Thanks Tom, I look forward to more of your observation...and appreciate
what you contribute, via that tiny Blackberry keyboard. You must really
want to say something by using that little device to be a part of the
Digest. I just take my big keyboard and screen for granted, so I
appreciate what Tom or others who are laid up are able to do with
limited tools such as a Blackberry. a cell phone with a few more
buttons.

Out of character but not much

2008-07-19 Thread jlj9675
There are two scenes that come to mind where Andy Griffith's humorous
reaction comes out vs. Sheriff Taylor's slightly lesser grin and laugh: When
he and Barn are dragging Ernest T. out of Mrs. Wiley's social and ET grabs
onto the doorframe to resist; at Howard's first shindig in his newly
redecorated bachelor pad, when Helen is cutting a rug with Emmett and Goober
punches him in the arm in utter enjoyment! Both vignettes reveal his
delightful humanity.

Andy Griffith Out of Character

2008-07-18 Thread tom . kssl
And I love it.It happens all the time to the best of performers in movies and
television when cameras roll on but for a second the performer is caught out of
character. It s good because it shows the character more realistic. On two
ocassions I caught Andy out of character.Look at one of the last shows The
Wedding the very last scene with Emmett dancin up a storm .Look at Andy being
egged on.You'll see him smiling nearly cracking up out of character completely
out of character but very convining and realistic. Now in Goobers Contest the
scene and this I believe could had an outake left in as I can't explain why
Andy looks this way we hear Floyd complaining to Goober while sitting in his
car at the pumps.look at the second long shot of Andy looking genuinely
pained.I'm a good guesser and I'm piecing this together.my hunch is since this
is one of the last scenes our beloved Howard McNear would film in his last
episode you can see the effort the difficulty speaking due to his stroke.tho
the shot of Andy is out of place it shows in my opinon his natural reaction to
his good friend Howard tryng to make an effort to speak.its sad yes but still a
well played episode.Andy and Howard I heard were close friends and rightly so.
There are other scenes of actors out of character be it in this grand show or
elsewhere.I applaud these hidden gems .It makes the scene more realistic. And on
a personal note.Thank you friends for your kind words and prayers. Tom [EMAIL

The essence of a character in a single quote

2007-06-13 Thread Keith Miles
While watching the episode Howard Millie (season 8) last night, Howard has
a line that, to me, summarizes the essence of his character. As Andy re-enters
the train compartment, Howard has just taken off his shoes. He says to Andy,
Without the proper amount of tension, you might as well not even use shoe
trees at all. That cuts to the heart of what Howard is all about.

To me that sums up Howard in just a few words--every semi regular character
probably has a line that perfectly describes their charater--beyond the
classics, Shazam or Nip it in the bud.

What are your favorite character quotes!

Keith in Nebraska

Howard (speaking of the fish cakes special in the train dining car): It's
got high nutritional value at a modest price.

Character Crackers

And each character's cracker would have a different flavor. There could

Warren's Character

2006-04-17 Thread Lori Heine
I think Warren simply had an impossible act to follow in Barney. There really
was nothing wrong with his character in and of himself.

It seems to me that the actor tried to make Warren somewhat different than
Barney. The episodes (were there more than one?) where both of them were on at
together were really quite interesting. Warren's boyish hero-worship of Barney
was actually pretty funny -- too bad they didn't get to make more out of it.
And when Barney gave Warren credit for the arrest that Andy had made (and then
given Barney the credit for), it was hilarious. That look of gentle amusement
in Andy's eyes, when Barney tells him that the young fella could use the
encouragement was priceless.

Jerry Miller character

2006-03-27 Thread Janet Anderson
Personally I think Van Dyke's character would've worn out fast if he
remained like he was on that one episode, even though I loved him as Luther
on Coach.

I'm not sure the Jerry Miller character would have worked in the long run
anyway, although they sure could have had some great musical numbers with
Andy and Jerry playing together.

I agree with Dixon and Paul (though I also think Jerry's character may have had
more success than the Warren character). Jerry's ineptness seemed a tad over
the top, and it wasn't balanced out by things that he could do well (his banjo
skill wasn't really displayed in his lone appearance). His speech pattern
(hesitancy, loss for words) was overdone, too, more so than the similar Stacy
character he played on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

The thing that surprised me in that episode was Andy's mild reaction when he
discovered Jerry dressed as a deputy -- badge and all -- and attempting to make
an arrest. Isn't impersonating an officer a pretty serious offense?? I know
Jerry's intentions weren't bad, but here's a guy that Andy barely knows
(despite Aunt Bee's long-ago connection to his parents), he's generally inept,
he has no law enforcement training, and Andy has already refused to consider
him as deputy material. So he steals a uniform, puts his safety in danger
attempting an arrest of two guys in a fight, and doesn't even get a slap on the
wrist by Andy! In fact, Andy allows Jerry to continue working for him, albeit
without the badge. That just didn't seem too plausible to me.

But maybe I'm just being hard to please. The producers could have chosen to
end Don's final season on a high note with a good Barney episode, and they
didn't. I guess that just sticks in my craw!

My two cents,
Thelma Lou
