Ok, but what you reminded me, and what i heard in this video is that crt training is guilt tripping people for things they may not have done. Example: you were racist from the womb because you are white, and there's nothing you can do about it. But if that's true, isn't it true of everyone  regardless of skin color? We are all human after all. Is it fair for me to assume as an Asian that all whites don't have my best interest in mind and want to shortchanged me, or as a Christian that all Muslims are  extremists and want me dead? I would argue that it isn't, because it's presumptuous generalization. By that same token,, a white person should not have to live on the other end of that same presumption, which is what crt seems to encourage. In my opinion, unwarranted guilt tripping is wrong. I am really curious what kinda stuff is written in that white fragility book.

Hey everybody! We're not short of mechanic ideas, but we were having a conversation last night wondering if there's something that hasn't been done before, that a lot of players want. Or any super inventive ideas, that only work in an audio game context, that we haven't thought of. So, as we're doing more and more now, we thought we'd ask audio gamers. What mechanics would you like to have in your dream audio game? They can be in any genre. All the bestHarry

Honestly, Skeletone sounds kind of cool. I've never played with Snowmonno because, as memory serves, it used to be really, well, bad. I think Artisoul has a neat ability, but at least as far as I played with it, it got exactly no decent moves. Is there a such thing as a decent dragon type? I haven't seen a lot of people use one, so I'm guessing not. I agree with you on Yakshine though. Mine tended to get killed really quickly. Is it just me, or do insects become useless later in the game? My Centiplex loved getting killed apparently. I'm still working on my favorites list of these new creatures. I have a few definite favorites from Manamon 1, Hydrake, Erroir, the ice mythical, and Leonatar among them. As for this time around, that Hyplish and its transformation are pretty high on my list. That thing can take a ton of damage and stay alive. It has a huge problem with plant attacks though, so that's worth remembering. What about Mutmo and its various transformations? Are they worth my time?

Re: Sad to read this

Whites are by no means the only group which spreads racism. They're probably among the worst, but they're not the only ones.Trump's ban on this theory is for the American federal government, and in America, I think it's safe to say that whites are dominant. Their ideology is dominant, their demographics are dominant, their interests are dominant. I'm not saying that's how it should be, only that that's how it is.When I say that we need to treat white people about their racial privilege, it's because whites in America have historically held advantages that they didn't earn, advantages other races often don't have, or don't have to the same extent. This doesn't make it something to feel horribly guilty about (it's not my fault, for instance, that I don't get racially profiled, I shouldn't apologize for that), but it does mean that when I hear of a person with a different ethnic background talking about the bad experiences they've had, I would do well to listen, not speak. It doesn't matter that I've never been profiled; of course I haven't, because I'm white.Whites in the west have historically dictated the narrative. Racism is not a big deal anymore because we say it isn't. Outrage from people of colour is going too far, because we say so, damn it. And on, and on. The sort of training Trump has put a stop to has been a huge tool in getting people to become more racially conscious. The point here is that while racism happens with other demographics, by and large it appears to be something visited upon non-whites by whites. To remove training to make said white folks more aware of their cultural impact is just another form of apologism. It says, "No, of course you're not racist. Just claim that you mean well, even while you continue to make laws that indirectly target black people, or continue to misrepresent blacks in the penal system, or continue to persecute Japanese-Americans for the supposed sins of their grandfathers. It's okay; you're a good Christian American, you can't possibly be racist".The fact is, there are a lot of busted systems in America, and one of the reasons (not the only one, by any means) that they're busted is systemic racism. The sooner we unwind that particular taint from the systems we rely on, the better off everyone will be. And you simply can't do that without accepting, all the way down, the complicitude of most whites in a system which supports them over others. I guess you could put it this way. What Trump has done is, in essence, to say that we don't really have to rebuild the foundation of a building that is still creaking and groaning and shifting under its own weight. You don't make that building stronger by making it taller; you make it stronger by fixing whatever is making it unstable. Banning this training is tantamount to saying that the building is as steady as it needs to be, and also tantamount to saying that anyone with the ability to oversee construction who thinks they hear creaking and groaning from this building should really listen again, because those noises are fake news, not really happening. Surely, everything will be f---*crash*

Re: Sad to read this

Okay. In science, a theory is something that looks true but which may not be provable 100% of the time. That is the difference between a theory and a law.In social science, a theory is a body of thought supported by evidence. There is no need to prove it absolutely. This is why there is so-called gender theory, feminist theory, anti-oppressive theory, systems theory, etc. It basically approaches an issue, or more than one issue, from a particular point of view.Critical race theory suggests that some of the cause of systemic racism - which still exists, I think we can all agree with that - is down to things like unintentional racism and white privilege. Letting folks off the hook from that means they don't have to think nearly so critically about the racial impact of their actions.I'll give a really simple but illustrative example. An educator made a rule that their students over Zoom had to wear shoes while attending online class, even if they were in their own homes. Now, for many of us, this might be mildly annoying, but is ultimately no big deal. However, there are cultural taboos against wearing shoes in a household, which were not even considered when this rule was made. Now obviously, these educators aren't raginc racists with no shred of morality for doing this, but ignorance is clearly in evidence here. Why, exactly, do students have to wear shoes while on Zoom in the first place, particularly in their own home? Why is there a need to put that standard forward in the first place? As such, it's needless, and it shuts out the experience of other people, mostly non-whites.And little things like this happen every day, all over the world. And it's usually (not always, but usually) whites doing it to non-whites.Again, it doesn't make these people awful or horrendous. It doesn't mean they're bad people. At worst, it just means that they take their own cultural norms so much for granted that they do not consider the perspectives of others.Taking critical race theory-based training out of the federal government is irresponsible because it simply takes this part of the analysis off the table. And as I said before, it can't be framed as a savings to taxpayers because Trump has lost billions alone in his own pursuits, and has already spent millions of taxpayer dollars playing golf. Funnily enough, it's one of the things folks criticized Obama for, but Trump has done it far more, and at far greater expense.

Seems though that this is built upon an assumption, not a fact, hence why it is called a theory. If ylmou want to make assumptions like that, you have to do it accross the board. This ties hack to what I said earlier about everyone being a liar. Everyone, knowingly or not has probably said or done some racist thing. If we want to address this issue, we have to work cooperatively, not segregate, and not just among a single group of individuals.

Because it isn't a stupid waste of taxpayer money. Most folks who think it is have no concept of the impact of systemic racism.Basically, this ban does one thing, and one only. It lets people in power off the hook.White privilege is real. Racism, even unintentional racism, is real. I have tons of patience for someone who says or does racist things with no true intent to hurt someone - I've done it myself, and will probably do it again in a moment of lowered caution - but I have none for the people who want to just go on doing the same stupid shit they've always been doing, with little care of who they hurt. You can be racist by accident. It's different than being racist on purpose. You can have white privilege without it being your fault.Training which teaches you about these things, and how to hurt people less with them, is, in my opinion, a huge part of undoing all the harm we've done.I find it ironic that a man who has literally spent millions on golf, at the taxpayer's expense, is banning racial sensitivity training because it's a waste of taxpayer money. Sorry. It doesn't fly.

Re: Linux Update Went Wrong, Why?

@4, yep, updates can break things. It happened on a server I'm running right now, actually. We updated to 20.04 from 18.04 and it broke a lot and we had to go and fix it all. Lol So yes, a lot can break Linux. A small tip: don't trust df -h alone; install ncdu and run sudo ncdu /. Wait for it to scan your disk and then you can see what's largest and delete that which you don't need. (As always, don't delete anything under /var, /usr, without knowing what your doing.)As for the other issues:1. Most package managers don't check disk space before doing the upgrade; they check after downloading all the update files. Some don't even check it at all (I've no idea why). I think apt does check, though. Or, dpkg does.2. I've no idea. I don't know how accurate that banner is (and, side note, you should probably change that for security reasons). Again, df -h and ncdu are your friends.3. Yes, there is. Try running dpkg-reconfigure -a (note, this reconfigures [all] packages on the system, though it does also fix any problems encountered during updates). This doesn't mean the kernel will boot, of course, but it should resolve most problems.4. Yes, you can uninstall the newest kernel by getting its version (ls /boot | sort and looking for the highest version). Alternatively, run dpkg --list | grep linux-image and look for the latest (use uname -r to figure out your current one so you don't accidentally remove that one).

Re: soundStrider, exploration game and relaxation tool

@germanicoI'm delighted that you enjoy my work! Procedural generation is powerful and I think there's a lot that audio games can achieve with it. I hope you and your friends enjoy "el cazador" when it's ready to share. I don't know if we will ever go underwater in soundStrider. Unfortunately it might require a new game. I would like to add aquatic animals to S.E.A. if possible. Dolphins and whales would be a pleasant addition. (But let's respect the animals, no torpedoes! haha)I'm sorry for not seeing our language difference. It makes sense now. Let me explain what I understand. When you press F11, you switch the game from full screen to windowed, and it performs better when in windowed mode. Is that correct? I might be able to investigate.

I've wanted to do this post for a long time, but since my native language is not English, I have been putting it off until now.i loved the game. with my friends we called it el caminador, so when you got the racing game and the submarine game we called them rl vottrfot and el nadador respectivelyI am a lover of the prosedural generation so for me playing it was a dream come true.I wish I could dive into the water and see more animals, but I suppose it will be seen in time. but I hope that with the engine update the game becomes less flatI hope to see more of your work and that the current games get bigger.ps: the submarine lacked power to launch torpedoes XD

Re: Accessible Chess?

QC is only for playing other people. I don't know what you didn't like in particular to give a better explanation, but playing Chess is farily simple. All you do is press enter on the  piece you want to move, then enter again on it's destination square. You have shortcuts like Ctrl left and right to reach left and right edge, as well as Ctrl up and down. You have different things like P to jump to the next available pawn, K for king, N for knight, R Rook, B Bishop and D queen. Those should be basics to get you started, but you can of course ask anything specific. As for playing offline, there are many programs. Some people use Winboard, though for a beginner, BG Chess challenge from Spoonbill games is actually very decent. This one is self voicing using Sapi, and has difficulty options for the computer player. Later if you need more advanced AI you can always find a mainstream program. You can get BG Chess challenge at http://www.spoonbillsoftware.com.au/bgchess.htm

Re: Manamon 2: Impressions Thread

Yakshine is gimicky and not very good.Snowmonno is a great ice-ghost type, but you won't get it in the wild for...well, a very long time. It's also hella frail and uses garbage moves until much later.Pandourbit is nice as a ghost type, and gets Earthquake later.Skeletone is a decent undead-sound type.Dormanoid has a signature move called Unshackle (which is funnily enough something I suggested like three years ago, so yay?), which changes its cry and form and jacks its stats a bit. But it's not especially good otherwise.Bombusect isn't amazing, but it doesn't straight-up suck either.Lantlare makes a solid flame-ghost type.Sanctosole takes a bit to get going but is actually not all that bad. A bit slow, and special defense is a tripping point, but it'll do.Banshreek would be amazing if it got Beyond Bolt, but its only worthwhile ghost move is Astral Buster. Shadow Sphere, Hone Mind and Sonic Force mean this one can cover quite a few things. Just watch for ghost and undead moves though.Maustadon is sort of okay, but a bit slow and dead to two or three hits of nearly anything.Ghoperto is pretty decent, with both of its abilities being fairly good and being fairly quick.Gargaram is not the best, but it's speedy, and I guess it works for some people.Marlaunt is also quick, and gets Frenzied Rage if you're into that. Also Restrain.Ghost Leonatar has garbage defenses and only gets to use its Skilled Jaw ability for I think one move. Chomp; non-stab. I don't even think it gets Crunch, for pete's sake. Nor Hydro Fang, or any other bite-style moves except...ahem, maybe Bite, which is something it should outgrow very quickly.Viralite is trash.Fiendour is middle of the road among undead types now. Not bad, by any means, but not amazing.Jagzeom is a decent attacker.

No, there isn't. Unfortunately, there isn't enough of a centalized group of blind people who are interested in manga specifically and have friends to help them write descriptions. Most blind people who are into that particular side of Japanese entertainment are usually happy with the anime, light novels, games and youtube videos, unfortunately. If there were more people into manga and sighted fans who felt charitable, we might make more headway there. lol

Opening a pain with alt+shift++-alt+shift+- and then switching between them with something simple like alt+left and alt+right/alt+up-alt+down... beautiful.

Unfortunately, I don't have an Arctana right now. How about ghost and undead? I tried the Yacshine line last time, for holy type coverage.

Re: Scrolling in the Windows terminal, or what should I use?

Partially off topic, can I make Windows Terminal boot into something other than power shell? I can't seem to accessibly get to any kind of settings or what have you. Would employ this for SSH and telnet and stuff like that, I've heard it has better support for ANSI escapes so I don't get stupid output and control characters which I might use on telnet sessions, PuTtY messes some of those up apparently. But I'd like to start from cmd and then do my ssh or whatever from there, instead of the long ass verbs for running programs in power shell.

Re: We're alive complete collection

@x0That would depend on where exactly you got the podcast from, but in general distribution in this way is disallowed. The thing is, that's mostly so that they can track the number of downloads for metrics and so that in cases where it isn't stated in the file it's self (like sounds or music) you know who created it.But really, I see it as a very slight issue especially in this case as long as it isn't the remastered versions, and I doubt the creators would care either.

Re: Manamon 2: Impressions Thread

I like things that are usable through the whole game. That doesn't necessarily mean a billion damage every hit, but more that it doesn't miss. Sorry, random misses aren't fun to me. Even worse if it's random misses on a move that doesn't do a lot of damage anyway. Moves that do random damage like shred and fireball flurry don't strike me as fun or interesting either. Sure, it's neat if it hits all 6 times, and some or all of them are critical hits. That's kinda cool! One hit just really isn't all that impressive. Hell, an ineffective hit of something else would do more damage. Dragon flurry or whatever it's called is alright I guess. At least it hits from 2 to 5 times and has a decent crit chance. But one hit of shred or pummel or whatever just isn't noteworthy even if it's effective and a critical hit. The Garganchan line is neat once it gets good. Before that though, I just keep asking the same thing. What's with all the damn special moves? The Volanteral line is awesome when it hits. Mostly though I just keep thinking the same thing. Damn! I missed! Damn! I missed! Damn damn damn!

I just got the game yesterday and tried to run it...for some reason after I was prompted to select mods and play, and the output read only window or some crap popped up, it stayed there for a minute before my nvda and my laptop stopped in place. I couldn't do anything at all. I couldn't back in or out, close the game, do anything with nvda what so ever, and ended up having to hard restart it four times after four failed attempts to run. Anyone have the same trouble? If it's really unsolvable now I may have to uninstall the game to save space, sigh. But at least it's there whenever I want to try.

Accessible Chess?

2020-09-13 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : x0 via Audiogames-reflector

Accessible Chess?

So I want to test and grow my brain's logic capabilities with something other than computer problems, and I figured a good logic puzzle for that would be Chess. Sudoku is a bit much for me and I don't think I could ever play that in software. I'd prefer to have the ability to play against either another person or the computer, with a difficulty level, though these don't necessarily need to be in the same service. I've heard of Quenton C's playroom having chess support, but is it decent? For a newbie chess player, would it be friendly? I've never much liked Quenton C's UI. And how are the bots on it?So basically what are your recommendations for accessible ways I can play chess on my computer or iPhone with purely audible interaction?

Re: We're alive complete collection

Depending on what podcatcher you use to download them you get filenames that kind of make sense or random hex garbage. I need to download them again, I used to have them with proper naming but I think I've lost that in a computer transfer. If the files are properly tagged, though, you can use something like foobar2000 to rename the files accordingly, or there are mass renamer tools that support ID3.Question: Is it legal to download the podcast like this? They're offered for free on an RSS feed, so surely it is right? What's the actual licensing on that, can you not share the files but you can give someone the RSS link? I don't know how copyright law works in this case.

working with chrome vox

Hello everyone. So my school just gave me a chromebook for the schoolyear, despite the fact that I already have an iPad to do my work. And despite me not really liking chromebooks, or at least, not the ones at the school due to them being very laggy, I decided to accept it purely because I love playing around with different operating systems. However, I really am not a fan of the chromeOS speech synth. I just find it very much annoying. The thing is, I also see eSpeak as an option in the settings, however, the eSpeak is for like every language except for english. Does anyone know how to get the english eSpeak synth to work on the chromebook? I would really appreciate the help.

Embird gets an absolutely mean moveset all the way up to gigasinge. Fireball flurry? Volcanic storm? Broil? There's dive bomb I guess, but you'll be rocking peck up until level 31. And then you have sandy wind, and smoke shield, and growl, and sneer. Gross! You could transform to Vultair right away, and get all those same moves, but you'll just get them later than if you stick with Embird. Embird gets gigasinge at level 45, but Vultair gets it in the mid 50s. Then Embird gets suicide dive at level 48 or something. Vultair doesn't get it until level 60. At first blush, this looks like dead weight right up until the main story is completed. Oh, I forgot about flame blizzard. I always forget about flame blizzard. Flame blizzard is really easy to forget with that 70% accuracy or whatever it is. Am I missing something here? Should I just use the torch for a decent flame move? Wait, -10 strength and -15 magic attack. Gross! Fail!

Re: Earwax

Okay, so for the sake of argument, here's a boss I built three years ago. Exact numbers don't matter right now, but extrapolate a little bit and you'll see what I mean here. It should be noted that including the main character, you have three three party members. You can swap them in and out (like Final Fantasy X this way) but doing so removes their buffs and takes a turn.Name: Kamala-Notai, the Dream ShamanDescription: A wizened old man with a long, smooth staff, a headdress made from bones and feathers, and a tiny misty woman perched on his left shoulderStats:Shaman: fairly high HP, bad attack, good defenses vs. all types of damage, fairly low initiative, fairly high magic attackSpirit Element: fairly low HP, bad attack, fairly low physical defense, very high magic attack and magic defense, extremely high initiativeNote: It is possible to target either the shaman or the elemental in this battle, but there are consequences for the latter on the first three rounds (see below)Shaman's AttacksMystic Chant: raises magic attack by 20 points and grants +10 evasionHypnotic Orb: causes one target to fall asleep; has a 10% chance to failTroubled Dreams: inflicts a debuff on any sleeping party members which removes 1/4 of their max HP every round until they wake up, or until they dieLightwarp: has a 10% chance to fail on each target; attempts to hit all targets with a debuff which will cause the Blind statusNightmare: does large damage to all sleeping targets, but wakes them up in the processRaise Staff: does not attack, but simply lifts his staff (as noted in the text); armour and magic armour lower by 10; preparation for Void of EternityVoid of Eternity: does extreme damage to all waking targets, but fails against those targets who are asleep; cancels Mystic Chant buff, thus lowering magic attack by 20 points and removing the 10 evasion buff; armour and magic armour raises by 10-10 after this attack firesEther Transfer: drains a modest amount of MP from a target and restores that amount of HP to Kamalla-NotaiElement of Spirit AttacksCoalesce: lasts for 3 rounds; during those rounds, the Spirit Elemental cannot be damaged in any way, and any skills or spells which target her will simply fail outright; she does nothing else while coalescingSpirit Link: used only once, and sets up a psychic link with Kamalla-Notai which allows both of them to heal a small amount of HP per roundDream Haze: cast on both herself and on the shaman, this is a field of spiritual energy which will cause the next person to attack either of them to fall asleep after their attack is finished; this field is disrupted once attacked, which is why she recasts it so often (see below)Delirium: a debuff cast on all party members which attempts to inflict poison, silence, sleep and confusion; has a 10% chance to fail on each attempted malediction, per character (thus making it unlikely for the entire party of 3 to be afflicted with all three maladies at once)Mind to Mind: Reaches out to touch the mind of one of the party members at random; this party member will always miss when targeting the spirit or the shaman until the link is broken; the link breaks on its own after Mental Anguish (see below) or after another character damages the spiritMental Anguish: does fairly large damage, and targets the victim of Mind to Mind (which means it is possible to fail if that link has been cancelled); after being inflicted with Mental Anguish, the target takes small damage every round and becomes immune to sleep until battle ends or until they diePsychic Illusions: When the spirit reaches the 15%HP threshold, she will cast this spell. She summons three copies each of herself and the shaman. These copies have a chance to intercept an incoming attack, and if they do, the attacker takes that damage instead, and the illusion perishes. The illusions cannot attack, never fade on their own, and essentially mean that for a short time, the likelihood of actually doing damage to the shaman or the spirit is drastically lowered.Attack Pattern (shaman)Mystic Chant, Lightwarp, Hypnotic Orb, Troubled Dreams, Nightmare, Raise Staff, Void of Eternity, skip turn, Ether Transfer, repeatElement of Spirit AttacksCoalesce, Coalesce, Coalesce, Dream Haze, Spirit Link, Mind to Mind, Dream Haze, Delirium, Mental Anguish, Dream Haze, Mind to Mind, Dream Haze, Delirium, Mental Anguish, repeat (ignoring Coalesce)Hard Mode: Psychic Illusions happens at 30% HP instead of 15% HP; if the shaman is killed first on Hard Mode, it will cast Hypnotic Orb three times in a row (once on each target), then cast Nightmare before dying. Now obviously, this thing will change if and when I ever get a chance to make my RPG and really run with it, but hopefully you can see that there's plenty of complexity here. Make all your chars stay awake, and you're going to take enormous damage. Let them get put to sleep, and obviously they can't react to other stuff, and it lets the spirit element

Re: Earwax

@52And 99% of those same games aren't the bosses with the neat boss-specific gimmick.  Also, I think that it's important to view this in context.  Back when this stuff was written text was the height of storytelling.  Something like Final Fantasy had the videogame equivalent of the best cutscenes you could possibly have with more lore and content in it than anyone else was doing.  It is easy to like things because no one else is doing anything better.  Plus you say no randomness, but none of those games are deterministic by any means.I just spent the last week playing slay the spire with all my free time, so it's not like there's not a counterexample, which I've also already conceded as well.Maybe if you go down the list and script every single enemy you implement with a custom AI of some sort you can get somewhere without combat becoming too much for most players to manage.  But it's actually kind of hard to do that.  You run out of clever really fast, or start having to introduce things like "You didn't learn anti-web which is only used by the spiders in these two areas".I'm not actually saying "the player's reaction time must be tested", but time is an incredibly, incredibly useful tool to add tension, consequence, and difficulty without frying people's brains.  And to some extent--though a lesser extent in audiogames--space is also a good way to add complexity without frying brains because humans are already able to reason about it.  If you take those off the table there isn't actually much left to replace them with.

Re: soundStrider, exploration game and relaxation tool

@75Oops. Quadruple post. Sorry that I missed you, musicalman! Thanks for taking a risk and checking out the game! What I can say about the game and its intended experience is to explore at your own pace; you'll take away from it whatever you put into it. It intentionally has no obstacles, objectives, or achievements. I wanted to create something that provided a relaxing escape that could be played after work, before bed, or between more intense gaming sessions. It's about the journey.Anyway, I'll happily answer your questions:1) Strafing is walking sideways. It's just another way to explore. If you strafe left while facing north, you'll continue to face north as objects move from left to right. If you combine strafing and turning, then you can walk circles around an object while constantly facing it. This is easiest with a mouse or gamepad.2) In adventure mode, the compass is only active when you have an active quest objective. After completing a quest you'll need to locate the next one on your own. Fortunately they're not very far apart (a minute at most). Your strategy of walking in random directions is definitely a valid way to play that I encourage.3) The worlds are disconnected entities. You may find similar sounds, but no two worlds exist in the same spatial or musical configurations. By using bookmarks you can fast travel between locations in any world. The only thing you can't do is take your progress in adventure mode from one world to another without starting a new one.Enjoy!

Re: Earwax

When you have the freedom to use your biggest spells or skills every round, sure. That's what Entombed boils down to, and by and large, that's what AHC boils down to.But what about bosses that can paralyze you? Bosses which will actually react to AoE attacks by using attacks you aren't prepared to handle? Bosses which will protect themselves against things, such that if all you do is just mash, you're going to die? If games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI and IV and X and stuff were so simple, why did people get stuck on certain bosses? I'll give you a hint; it wasn't just because those bosses had good stats. It's because those bosses did particularly creative things and stopped you from just hitting "attack" every round. The Magus Sisters from FFIV, Magus from Chrono Trigger, Yunaleska or Seymour Flux for normal in-game bosses for Final Fantasy X (really, all the Seymour fights were decent, but this was perhaps the best), Atma Weapon or even Whelk/Presenter from Final Fantasy VI. Bosses have gimmicks. They have weak points. They have big attacks. And there's a great deal of customization in who you bring to a given fight. This is, IMO, its own sort of difficulty. Sure it's ultimately simplistic in its mechanics, but (and I pray you take this in the way I intend) bigger is not always better. There is a reason why certain RPGs sold like hotcakes long, long after such memory limitations were no longer a problem. Sure, the story is there, and I want to use that. Sure, the exploration and lore and world were there, and I want that too. But part of it was the combat. People liked it. It was engaging. It wasn't just random and nonsensical or heartlessly RNG the whole way through (this is Entombed's biggest failing, in fact). I'm 100% okay with this not being your cup of tea, but definitely not so okay with what looks like dismissal of the turn-based genre of RPG. It's been done loads of times, and continues being done to some extent, and it -does work.

Re: Sad to read this

@107I mean, sometimes I just check in and read your posts to see if the rest of the discussion is something worth engaging with or not. I'm not talking about you in this instance.  In general i see a lot of facts from our side of the political spectrum around here, and a lot of "I disbelieve everything you're saying because tiny newspaper said something different, and this rests the case forever" from the other side.  I actually have a conservative friend who makes good, coherent arguments, and even agree with some of the conservative points on healthcare not really being solvable by just mandating that poof now there is a single-payer healthcare system overnight.  And I don't like Biden, either.  But all of that came from well-constructed arguments and things. It's like the stereotype of the right is "I've made it about feelings, now we can ignore those feelings and the problem is solved".  I saw someone propose that the modern world doesn't believe in the world as a physical thing with actual facts anymore, and I kind of laughed at the time, and of course everyone is going to say "but of course the world is real and facts exist".  But I've spent a few months since then watching, and they kind of had a point--everyone on the right and quite a few people on the left don't seem to get that there's anything so concrete as physics or biology or anything like that underneath the things they want to do, or honestly even particularly people, either.  It started at climate change isn't real even though California is burning, the Coronavirus isn't real even though people are dropping dead in droves, and nowadays with the police stuff no one actually addresses the part where kids got shot because we can just argue little inconvenient things like facts out of the way and have a giant shouting match and not, like, ever do anything about any of it.It's like sympathetic magic.  Except sympathetic magic doesn't work and somehow everyone has forgotten that, or something.  We do a big ritual to link insert-the-problem to feeling angry about things, figure out how to direct the discourse into a brick wall until it all goes away, and then say that means the problem is solved because we got the conversation to stop.

Re: Earwax

@50For what it's worth, Chrono Trigger and basically anything else put out by Square has incredibly simplistic mechanics.  in fact it's hard (not impossible, but hard) to find sighted turn-based RPGs which don't boil down to hit your best spell for all of combat.  I haven't played A Hero's Call personally and don't plan to because I have no interest in simple combat, but if you think that all these sighted games that have done it have more complicated combat than Entombed--they don't.Every once in a while there's something like Slay The Spire with deep mechanics, or one or another rpg that lets you move your characters around as well for position, or something else that adds depth.  When it comes to turn-based combat the sighted side of the grass is most definitely not greener.  In general there's only so many places to put difficulty, and one of the worst ones for player retention is complicated math for combat stuff: but if the combat is entirely turn based, there's not much else to do for depth.  Infinitely long turns but really deep mechanics is a very niche audience--I suspect this is why Slay The Spire isn't a huge thing outside very specific circles, and Slay The Spire only pulls it off by having a particularly odd dynamic where your run through the game is 15 minutes once you've learned how to play it (thus limiting how far you have to think ahead). But I don't care whether you do turn-based combat.  I don't think you'll succeed at making it fun to me, because lots and lots of sighted devs have tried over the years, and none of them have really figured out complexity without adding some sort of realtime element to apply pressure, or essentially going as far as saying "it's realtime but you can pause the world whenever".  And unless you have something really creative in mind I don't think you'll get what you want out of it when it's done, either.  As far as I can tell, turn-based being a big thing was just that computers used to only be able to do that and not much else.  But it's your project, my point was merely pointing out that it sounded like you were choosing to do that for the wrong reasons and as if you thought there was some inherent choice between immersive storytelling and realtime combat.

Re: slay the spire now accessible!

Hey guys. Today's update changed the main menu a bit specifically regarding how runs are started. You can now navigate the game mode menu and use the character select screen. The old command still works but isn't guaranteed to work for supported content mods. The point of this is to make supporting mods that modify how the game is started, add new gamemodes,  or add more character select options easier. Examples of these are Ascension Reborn adding negative ascensions and custom ascension, Downfall adding its new gamemode, and Animator having different starting decks and card pools for various anime.
