I have a gazillion MELLOs. Was he from Sao Miguel island? Shirley in CA - Original Message - From: Elaine Mello To: Azores Genealogy Sent: Friday, June 22, 2018 5:47 PM Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Immigrating to the U.S govt records So, after almost 2 years of trying to get information from the USCIS for my paternal grandfather, Antonio Mello, I came home to find a CD from the USCIS - I was so excited! Then I put it in the computer, and found two PDFs - one which was a cover letter saying that they couldn't find any further records and that they were refunding me my money (though check that it actually gets refunded, just in case they forget...) and a secondary sheet with some very basic information, which is part of the application that they had. So Antonio declared that he arrived April 18, 1901 on the S.S. Donna Maria into New York, which meant he was about 12 at the time. He also declared he entered as Antonio Mello. So I looked up the ship records, and can only find one Antonio Francis, aged 13, which may or may not be him. So, is it unusual for people to get this wrong when filling out these forms, or are the records I've found online of immigrants incomplete? I'm checking with the Justice Archives in Massachusetts to see if there is something at the state level since the federal government was such a disappointment (though they said I could try again as they are always searching for missing records, but that sounds more like looking for a needle in a haystack.) So back to the research drawing board! Elaine -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Azores Genealogy" group. According to relatives here and in Azores he was captain of the ship and was either going to or from Azores when he became ill and either died on board or after they docked in Hawaii and was then buried in Hawaii. Further complicating research is there is another person, a relative, with exactly the same name and also a ship's captain. Here are the details: Manuel Pereira Domingos, born 1 June 1843 in Ribeiro do Meio and lived in freguesia of Lajes on Pico. Assumption is that ship was a whaler but not confirmed. All agree he is known to have sailed in and out of Boston regularly. Have narrowed down his death to between 1903 and 1923. Jacintho Jose de Braga, (b. 21 Sep 1806), Maia m. 26 Aug 1829, Maia to Rosa de Medeiros Pacehco (b. 4 Mar 1810, Maia) had 10 known children. Until now, I've only been able to prove that Jozimas (my gr gr grandfather) and his sister, Jacintha Roza, made it to adulthood and had families. Now, I can add their brother, Jose Jacintho de Braga (b. 23 Sep 1846, Maia) to the list. Jose moved to Ponta Delgada. He married Emilia Augusta de Medeiros 8 Oct 1868, Sao Sebastiao, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel Island. Emilia was the daughter of Agosthinho de Medeiros and Mafalda da Assumpcao. Emilia was born ca 1839, Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada. If the marriage record is right, she was 7 years older that Jose. Jose and Emilia had at least two children: 1. Toribio baptized 10 Jan 1870, Sao Sebastiao, P. Delgada 2. Jose, b. 24 Jul 1872, Sao Sebastiao, P. Delgada Jose was recorded in his marriage under the surname Pacheco, but under the surname de Braga for his son's baptismals. At that point the trail goes cold. I haven't found anymore children in Sao Sebastiao. I also have not found Toribio or Jose's marriages or any children baptized with them as parents. I haven't gone through the obitos yet. I'm hoping they survived. Now my question, I was searching the arquivo website yesterday and came across a curious entry for Jose Jacintho de Braga. I know the records aren't online, but was hoping someone can give me an idea of what this file refers to: http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/details?id=1029225=jose%7Cjacinto%7Cde%7Cbraga In case the link doesn't work the notes read: "Autos cíveis de petição para emancipação. Requerente residente em Ponta Delgada." What does this refer to? The file is for Jose Jacintho but under recipient it says "Jacintho Jose de Braga", which I believe refers to his father. I am glad you found the will! On Mission San Jose, I have had a few "run ins" with them. They are very protective of their records and have one person who supposedly will check for you. Last year I had reason to communicate with this person because of a funeral I was arranging and asked her if she would check on a couple of old burial records as only the church has those for their cemetery. She said it might take awhile, this was over a year agono word! I had a real meltdown in their office maybe 15 years ago when my aunt, a lifelong parishioner, had asked if I could search. They told her ok but when I arrived from out of town, they changed their mind when they found out I wanted to see more than one record (my whole family was from there for generations). I had to ask (the info was not offered) if they had ever been microfilmed and THEN I was told that try had been and were at St Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park. So I and many others enjoyed a time of access but recently I've read on this group that they no longer allow personal searches in Menlo Park either. It was nice while it lasted! They may allow requests but as far as being an altar boy, I doubt that there would be any evidence. From my understanding they had only sacramental records filmed (why they don't have the burials). Do you have Manuel and Mariana's marriage record? If they married in the US... It could have been in MSJ or maybe Holy Spirit since he was buried there. I've seen the island listed on some marriages but not the village. I looked at the UPEC records of Newark but did not see your Manuel Perry Silva ...quite often they give the village. It would be worth your time to look through the membership records of the UPEC in those other towns like Centerville and Mission San Jose.or even the other towns just to rule that out. I'm always interested in the Portuguese of this area where my family settled:) Best of luck Susan Here is the top of that 1900 census page: -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Azores Genealogy" group. But if you look up the page, Joao is line 28 that was the name I saw and jumped to the conclusion it was him. Its interesting to know that they would name their kids the same name - I guess George Foreman wasn't the first to do that, then! ;} Shirley, I do find the 14 year old Joao confusing, as there is a Virginia that was born in 1893 to Joao and Francisca, so unless there was a multiple birth or they adopted a child, he doesn't make sense. But everything else matches up in terms of ages and names/parentage. Elaine Elaine On Friday, December 9, 2016 at 7:37:45 PM UTC-5, Mara wrote: Yes, and yes, it was. Hi everyone, I've been going page by page from about 1904 onwards looking for my parternal grandmather, Maria Lima. It's been great looking at these records for those years from Porto Delgada, because whomever was writing the logs had the clearest handwriting I've seen so far. I think I found her, but they weren't listed as coming from Ribeira Quente. I'm assuming this is a mistake, as they just did an ellipses from the person above them rather than to write the correct town down. So on line 675 here: http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1906-1907/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1906-1907_item1/P114.html I see the passport for Francisca Roza de Mello, whose parents were Manuel de Mello Barboza and Maria Julia. The next line down is a Maria da Lima, with her parents listed, Joao Ignacio de Lima and Francisca Roza. The line after that is another Maria Lima, who would be the right age for my grandmother, who was born in 1890. I can't read the middle name listed there, and now there are two Marias there. Looking at my family tree, Manuel had a brother Jose who also married a Francesca and their daughter was Maria, but I thought she was the same age, and she would have been a de Mello or Barboza, not a Lima. So is it possible that the first Maria was listed as my grandmother, but would in fact be the cousin? And if this is the correct record, my grandmother would have had a little brother, also named Joao? Thanks for you assistance! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas and the Counts of Benavente

Was he born in Portugal or Baesa, Galiza Spain? On Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 11:48:19 AM UTC-4, John Raposo wrote: João Afonso (de Pimentel) “das Grotas Fundas Died 2 Sept 1512 NB: this is the work of several people including Rodrigo Rodrigues, Andrew Rapoza, George Pacheco, Diana cestodio Silva, in addition to those cited. NAME: He became known in St. Michael, Açores as "João Afonso das Grotas Fundas" [Frutuoso]. Frutuoso never gives him the family name Pimentel nor does he ever make reference to a relationship to the Spanish Counts of Benevente. This claim is made by his grandson João Afonso, o Moço, of Faial da Terra, where he died on 16.4.1577. On the cover of his will, in an old script, it says that the said João Afonso, o Moço descendes from the Condes de Benavente of Castile. BIOGRAPHY: "The Pimentels and the Resendes families of the island of São Miguel descended from João Afonso de Pimentel who came with these names in the last quarter of the 15th century" [Familias Antigas da Povoação]. (It was also suggested that he arrive in the middle of the 15th century [James Guill]. "He settled in the place of Grotas Fundas, on the island of São Miguel, where he had a large family and house, by which he became well-known on the island as João Afonso das Grotas Fundas [Frutuoso]." "The origin of this João Afonso is wrapped in some mystery; nevertheless, his 5th grandson [through a daughter of João Afonso], Padre Pedro Furtado Leite, outlined his ancestry in a letter in which he wrote that his mother was descended from João Afonso who, in turn, was the descendant of the Counts of Benavente, of Spain. In truth, there are some nobiliaries that refer to a son of the third Count of Benavente (there is a perfect coincidence of dates), of the name João Afonso, who left Spain, and disappears from history. The third Count of Benavente, Alonso de Pimentel, also known as the Count of Mayorga, was married to Dona Maria de Quinones y Toledo. The subsequent nobiliaries referred to their son João Afonso de Pimentel [Familias]." No further details are given in Genealogia de los Condes y Duques de Benavente (at the Madrid Library), however. [J. Guill] This son would have been 60 to 70 years old when João Afonso das Grotas Fundas made his will, His great-grea-greatr grandson, Father Belchior Manuel de Resendes, in a letter, says that his 4th grandfather, João Afonso das Grotas Fundas was the son of a Count and exiled himself to S. Miguel for having committed a crime in Portugal. "The Pimentels belong to one of the most illustrious families of the Iberian peninsula and originate in Benavente, where they had a castle at the juncture of a gigantic triangular territory formed by the lands of Leon, Asturias, and Galicia and bordered by the rivers Esla and Orbigo [Familias]." One Count built a hospital by the name of Nossa Senhora do Piedade to benefit the pilgrims traveling the Silver Route on the way to Santiago de Compostela. The church in Ponta Garça that serves the Grotas Fundas area where João Afonso was the first settler, was also called Nossa Senhora do Piedade, thus further suggesting the connection between João Afonso das Grotas Fundas and the Counts of Benavente. [Familias.] It may be this same João Afonso that is mentioned to have contributed 80 moios of wheat toward a program to direct fresh water from the land of Gaspar de Bettancurt to Ponta Delgada because before this time the residents of that town had to rely on well water (perhaps the town's population was growing too large to sustain itself on the number of wells then available) [Alverne]. João Afonso das Grotas Fundas was again credited as being the earliest settler of Grotas Fundas at the very beginning of Ponta Garça's settlement. (It was also suggested that, given the isolation and difficult access to Grotas Fundas, it could be assumed that João Afonso de Pimentel had a motive to flee to so remote a spot [J.Guill].) He made his will on 26 May 1511. In it he made his oldest son, João Afonso, and his son's wife, Catarina Manuel, the executors and ordered that a third of his lands be set aside to produce a benefit of 10,000 reis [system of money later replaced by cruzeiros] for the purpose of having three masses said one week a year in perpetuity; the first on Monday for his faith in God to be a blessing on his soul; the second on Saturday in honor of the Peace of Christ and the last one on Saturday in honor of "Nossa Senhora" with all her prayers [Vida]. How are you doing - I remember we are practically "neighbors" since I live in Truckee most of the year.. I have never "heard" of any sibs for grandfather Mello or grandmother Maria - I just remember hearing snips of conversations between my Mom and Dad about his youth - 1. talked about enormous amount of siblings and how fat grandma got, but no mention of his aunts and uncles. 2. I found (and unfortunately do not have that paperwork printed off here in So. Cal) a record of a 15 yr old stowaway by the name of Mello - in 1881of course, how do I prove that person is my grandpa? 3. I'll have to look at the 1890 HI census -- I know I found the family in Hawaii on the later census. They were in Hilo for awhile but my dad was born in Honokaa - of course, I do not have a birth certificate or any tangible evidence such as church records as I cannot access them online. 4. Very little info on grandma - do not have any written docs on their marriage. Most is from census. Question- where does the name Fregoso come from? Is it like the Spanish where they use the mother's maiden name as the son's middle name? I don't know. Yes I have seen this before. My mother's father was Joe de Mello. About 1915 he added Pine. I don't know where the Pine came from. In all of the records that I have discovered so far on my father's side the last name is always d'Andrade. There are only 2 entries where Fragoso is referenced. 1. Manuel's baptismal certificate has his father's last name as d'Andrade (no mention of Fragoso) but on Maria Jose Cabral's (his wife) baptismal record, there is a margin notation that she married Manuel d'Andrade Fragoso (now they added Fragoso to his last name). 2. The other record which shows Fragoso is on a birth record of Maria who's father's name is Manuel D'Andrade Fragoso (not the same manuel as above but tracing the lineage he was brother of the Manuel above's father). Does that make sense? Anyhow, this is a bit of a mystery. How and why did the Fragoso name just appear? The only US record I have found that I know with certainty is him is his death record (1912) which lists his parents as "John Silveira" and "Marianna Florinda" and gives his birth as "1870" "Azores". What I can get from this record is that he was baptized 9 August 1868, his father is Joao Silveira de Souza and his mother is Marianna Florinda, paternal grandparents Manuel Silveira de Souza and Anna Luiza, maternal grandparents Antonio Jose Vieira and Barbara Florinda For godparents. I cannot make out what is written after Florinda. More importantly, it looks like the record states that his birth was in October 1867 but that line is really difficult to make out because of bleed-through from the back side of the page (I'm guessing). It is the record on the top right, #35, Jose. 1. Did I get the information correct? 2. Can anyone help with the last part of Barbara Florinda's name? 3. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] João Afonso das Grotas Fundas
See below in red. I haven't worked on this line in a long, long time. I got some of the info from geneall.net. AND some from George Pacheco, plus other people. Baesa, Galiza, Spain. Context - here is a post I made to a Spanish genealogy group: I show that he was in Ponta Garca, Sao Miguel, Azores from 1460-1480. my 13x great grandfather was Joao Afonso de Pimentel birth circa 1400's in ? and died 02-Sep-1512 in Sao Miguel, Azores, PORTUGAL. His parents are Alfonso de Pimentel y Enriquez, III conde de Benavente (born 1432 and died 1461 Benavente) and Maria Vigil de Quinones y Toledo (b. 1436 and died 12-Apr-1477 Toledo). I need evidence that my 13x great grandfather is the child of this couple as there is mystery around him. DON Afonso de Pimentel's father was DON Rodrigo Afonso Pimentel, 2nd Count of Benavente. http://www.xenealoxiasdoortegal.net/ortegal/pimentel.htm On Nov 2, 2015 12:56 PM, "Ângela Loura" wrote: Olá Manita, Do you mean Benavente in Portugal (mainland)? 2015-11-02 17:34 GMT+00:00 Manita M : Hola! Is there anyone on this list that can share more information on the history and story beyond what JR provided for João Afonso das Grotas Fundas? I'm heading to Portugal on the 14th and I'm seriously considering a detour to Benavente, Spain but would like to be armed with more information. Does anyone have a CCA link to Joao Afonso death record or are you relying on RR's information? Where was he born? Does anyone have that record? On Sep 2, 2015 12:14 AM, "JR" wrote: I will let people more knowledgeable about Joao Afonso discuss his history and story. For now I can tell you that Grotas Fundas is a neighbourhood, even today, on the eastern border of the village of Ponta Garca. Because of the hills and mountains, the town of Ponta Garca ends there and borders hills surrounding Ribeira Quente. There is a very nice beach at the bottom that was actually part of the property of Dr, Agusto Botelho de Simas. It was his summer home. He was a well known and respected doctor in the 1950-80 era, based in Vila Franca, now deceased. There is a bust of him in the main square honoring his life and work. The beach is now public with public access. From there you get fabulous views of the peninsulas jutting out into the ocean, east and west, and south is the ocean.. And you might even see whales or dolphins swimming by. Looking east is Ribeira Quente, but its view is blocked by a huge rolling hills, beautiful in their right. Looking west is the coastline leading to Vila Franca, easily visible, an outstanding view. The land is rich and suitable for farming and was covered by vineyards in times past, and I guess that's what made it so attractive to our ancestors. Apparently, other well known families from the upper class owned land there. There is a trail, still in use for hikers, that people took in the past, by foot and donkey from Grotas Fudas to Ribeira Quente. They were mostly cousins, farm workers and fisherfolk and exchanged produce and goods. You often read about ancestors that lived in Grotas Fundas or the place called "Ribeira Quente, limit de fraguesia de Ponta Garca." It was also the shortest way to Ribeira Quente and Povoacao. Otherwise, you have to go north, way up to the main road, where essentially you are on top of hill. There is a long, winding and steep road, called the Guiteria that starts at Grotas Fundas and makes it way up the main road. It is pastoral and you might encounter cows on the moo-ve! Sorry couldn't resist. At the top you will be rewarded with a vista of the whole of Ponta Garca and Vila Franca. Take your camera! I tried to read the section on him in "Familias Antigas Povoação" but my Portuguese is limited. I only recognize words ...something about torture, abandon, going to Rome to ask the Pope for forgiveness, walking to Santiago de Compostela and building a hospital. 2. What is the controversy? 3. Is there further study being done on him? What other source records exist on him? 4. Now that we have DNA testing. Is it possible now to prove

Hi, I can’t translate the death record at http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FAL-HT-CASTELOBRANCO-O-1643-1722/FAL-HT-CASTELOBRANCO-O-1643-1722_item1/P169.html , bottom entry, left page and top right page. It appears to be for Pedro Dutra de Faria with death on 7 September 1711, but I can’t translate enough of the rest of it to make sense of it. I hope someone can help. Thanks.
