I found a couple of interesting "yard" birds as I made my way through the woods
edge on my property to see what was around in the beaver pond next door.
First, up from the ground flew a chunky medium-sized bird which fluttered off
twittering into the woods and landed on the ground
Our group went to Dodge Road, where the woodcocks started later than when I
scouted, but with enough light to be easily seen. After a few skydances,
those with muck boots and binoculars took a few steps into the muddy field
where I was able to get my spotlight on the bird on the ground.

off to look for woodcocks and owls. I led my group to the corner of Snyder Hill
and Whitted Roads. We got out of the cars at a minute before 8 pm, just as the

We had our first Woodcock last Thursday the 22nd, the day of the snowstorm.
Technically we are a few hundred yards south of the basin in Newfield. This is
very early even for our location.

headed up the stream bed and it landed out of sight near the stream. It made no

walking in front of us and is now on Sherwood Platform. It did the woodcock

At dusk this evening I happened to glance out a window just in time to see a
Woodcock descending for a landing in our front field. It hasn't been above
freezing
for ages, we still have a snow cover and ponds and puddles are still iced in.

as average arrival date goes, it's two days late, but
I had a theory that woodcocks didn't dance when it was too cold or snowy, so
last evening when I took the dog out around 7:40 I was surprised to hear them
as we stepped from the lawn to the edge of a brushy field. There was one
woodcock just landing (and warbling) to my right, and one peenting

Here are 4 close shots of an American Woodcock that I photographed last night
(May 2) in the field bordered by Snyder and Cherry Rd. north of the airport.

You're not likely to destroy any Woodcock nests by cutting hay. The
nests would not be out in the fields, but someplace in nearby woods
(open aspen stands are favored). The young are precocious, and Mom
can shepherd them far from the nest area soon after they hatch.
