Re: [cobirds] AOU, Changing bird names

2023-11-04 Thread SeEttaM
This amounts to nothing more than an attempt to 'white-wash'
ornithology---to make it look like this field didn't revere those
considered heroes during earlier historical periods who are now considered
evil. 樂 Future generations will look back on this and sigh. We can't erase
the historical reality, slavery and Indian Wars and other bad stuff
happened with birds named after some of the participants. And some birders
and ornithologists thought that sweeping those names under a rug in 2023
was a higher priority than conserving birds and their habitats.

Re: [cobirds] "Mountain Pipit" in Cobirds rare bird alert

2023-07-08 Thread SeEttaM
I guess I should have said I am surprised that ebird had this as a choice
as they first ask the location and then provide a list of birds that are
possible in that location. I think it would require adding this species as
'rare' addition but that should followed by their warning that this species
has not been reported there. So I'm wondering if there is glitch on ebird.

Too much "Whatabout-ism" being preached. It is ridiculous that some keep
making excuses for selfish persons who not only unnecessarily disturb some
poor bird that ask to be a rarity but interfere with others who are wanted
to see the bird also. Call out these selfish birders or photos, whichever

Re: [cobirds] Re: Extensive power expansion, anybody watching for impacts on birds

2021-12-09 Thread SeEttaM
Wow, I had to reread what I wrote but I cannot fathom how it was
misconstrued to include recommended that "...we harass the process of
bringing in a greater supply of electricity" and effectively costing
taxpayers more money! Really, this is I what I asked, "..I hope many will
take a look and intervene as needed to try to protect the birds we still
have. "

While I don't know what to think about that I do disagree with Mr. Reeser's
statement, "Birds are more adaptable than some people give them credit
for." I'm not sure how many Colorado birders are aware of the very real of
extinction of Lesser Prairie Chickens from southeast Colorado which has
been identified as in part due to gas and oil activity: "The lesser
prairie-chicken population, which once numbered in the hundreds of
thousands, has dwindled across its historical range by an estimated 90%,
“due largely to habitat loss and fragmentation,” USFWS said, with oil and
gas activity contributing to the decline".
Some of the issues with gas and oil activity that have caused the decline
of these Lesser Prairie Chickens are similar to what expansion of electric
utility lines would bring. I don't consider the risk of expiration of this
species to be a "small price to pay."

I certainly hope that more level headed consideration be given to this
issue. I am a strong supporter of accountability and that I believe that
utilizing companies need to be held accountable for their actions that
might cause serious damage to vital bird habitat. And that will only happen
when those of us who are serious about bird conservation intervene (fyi,
before I get misconstrued again that does not imply that this project has
to be stopped or that the company should be harassed.)

Just an addition piece of info, other interests such as the cultural
advocates are intervening to avoid this project being harmful to their
interests in Eastern Colorado.

I just found mapping by Excel of their 'Colorado Power Pathway' of new
substations and giant transmission lines that are proposed to cut through
eastern Colorado including in or near some very important bird habitat
including Chico Basin. Are any conservation groups or birding groups that
concern themselves with protecting vital bird habitat monitoring this? As

there is a lot of Eastern Colorado that will is north of our area that will
be impacted by that this major expansion by Excel. Given all the negative
impacts on the birds we all love to watch I hope many will take a look and
intervene as needed to try to protect the birds we still have. Here is

2021-04-02 Thread SeEttaM
Article said, "There was a strong correlation between the observations of
dead birds and wildfires and the toxic gases they produced, but not with
the early winter storms."

How strange since the birds reported dead in Colorado were the day when a
very winter was occurring. Hmmm, something doesn't make sense.

[cobirds] Risks in Crowley and Fremont Counties

2020-12-04 Thread SeEttaM
Crowley County has 2,000 inmates and a civilian (non inmate) population of
about 4,000. The covid cases which are rampant in all our prisons are
lumped in with community cases in most of the statistics about county covid
cases. While Crowley County shows about 1,300 cases overall Arkansas
Valley Cor Facility has 860 inmates that have tested positive and the
private prison Crowley Co Cor Facility has a total of 370 inmates who
tested positive. That means the total number of community cases is less
than 100. So birding in Crowley County is likely less risky than a number
of other counties.

The situation is similar in Fremont County but in addition to the surge in
inmate cases we also have a big surge community cases and were just raised
to an Orange status. If you come to Fremont County I would advise staying
out of restaurants and other indoor locations where infection risk is high.

I listened to and spoke at the State Land Board meeting just a bit ago in
regards to Chico Basin plans. I spoke as an individual citizen as Peg had
already sent in AVAS comments and from the perspective as the person who
worked to put Chico Basin into Stewardship Trust status originally for
AVAS.

The good news is the State Land Board membership voted unanimously to
retain the entirety of Chico Basin Ranch (not sell part of it) and to lease
it as one entity (not dividing into 3 sections and leasing separately) and
to extend this to 2034. This is a big win for conservation of the natural
values and for those who enjoy birding at the Ranch.

Let me note that the Commissioners took note of the significant interest in
the Ranch as indicated by the many comments submitted. So yes, comments
are helpful.

Tunnel Drive drying pond). Also had a Says Phoebe at Florence River Park. I
haven't seen that many Phoebes here for several years.

Yesterday there was a beautiful male Cinnamon Teal at Sells Lake. Today, in
addition to several Phoebes, Sells Lake produced 5 bright Audubon's
Yellow-rumped Warblers and a Lincolns Sparrow.

And today a saw an Osprey that was working on last years nest by ponds on

[cobirds] Fall out of Gray Flycatchers in Canon City Friday

2019-05-11 Thread SeEttaM
The socked in weather with rain and snow brought a lot of migrating Gray
Flycatchers down in Canon City. I saw 25 of them during a one mile walk on
the Canon City Riverwalk. A similar Gray Flycatcher fall out occurred
several years due to weather. I got a couple of nice pics of Gray
Flycatchers which I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog
.
Fyi, I am especially proud of these as I am sporting a brace on my left
wrist due to a compound fracture 3 weeks ago which has challenged my
photography skills.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron no show in Canon City

2019-05-06 Thread SeEttaM
The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron that has been seen for over a week at Sells

myself looked for it. When I stopped by this morning 2 birders looking for
it did not see it nor did I. I will continue checking for it just in case.

[cobirds] Bald Eagle on humongous (and very old) nest in Crowley Co.

I have been watching nesting Bald Eagles in Crowley County for some years.
When I looked today I couldn't see the eagle as she was so small relative

[cobirds] Yellow-bellied and Williamson's Sapsuckers, Greater White-fronted Geese and a White-throated Sparrow in Canon City

2018-12-03 Thread SeEttaM
Today I found a juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in a pine tree at the
Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City. I don't if this might the same bird as
reported by Jerry DeBoer in mid November in as the age was not noted.
While he reported that one in Rouse Park it is my experience that these
fall/early winter sapsuckers move around to the various parks, etc in Canon
City so location is fluid. I got several fairly good pics of the this bird
and have uploaded them to my Birds and Nature blog
.
I also found 2 female Williamson's Sapsuckers around town today but no
males.

I was surprised to find our usual wintering flock of Greater White-fronted
Geese on the far west side of Canon City on Riverside Drive. I have been
looking for them for a month where they have always been on the far east
side of town. There was a group of 10 feeding in a grass field with
Canada Geese.

When I got home I was delighted to see a White-throated Sparrow in my
yard. In the winter of 2015 I had two White-throated Sparrows visited my
yard off and on for a couple of months.

[cobirds] Willliamson's Sapsuckers in Canon City

2018-11-15 Thread SeEttaM
Since I posted about them several days ago I have found a second male
Williamson's Sapsucker. The female continues. I have seen the male
sapsuckers in different locations on different days which is consistent
with experience in past years--these birds move around Canon City from one
location to another. I did get several very good pics of one of the males
and have uploaded them to my Birds and Nature blog.

Of note, I saw a Greater Roadrunner on Tunnel Drive Road several days ago.
While it has been some years since I have found one in this area it is
always worth keeping a watch for one of these when traveling on Tunnel

[cobirds] Williamson's Sapsuckers and Cedar Waxwing in Canon City

[cobirds] Migrating Chimney Swift flock continues in Canon and increased to 45-50 birds tonight

2018-08-24 Thread SeEttaM
I staked out the Goodwill Store chimney at dusk tonight and was pleased to
watch more and more Chimney Swifts flying into the area. Right at dark
they started entering the chimney and I counted 40 off of video but did not
video all of them so I believe there were 45 and more likely 50 birds
tonight compared to about 30 last night. I will have to work on some video
so post more shots tomorrow . Last nights video and pics are available on
my Birds and Nature blog.

I have no idea if they will be there tomorrow night but if you in Canon at
dusk, the Goodwill Store chimney is on the corner of 9th and Main.

[cobirds] Protections for T species at John Martin Reservoir

2018-05-07 Thread SeEttaM
Note: Arrgh, I sent this twice over the weekend but it got rejected for
being too large by Google groups. So I will send the photos I note in a
separate email.
I saw the post "Piping Plover habitat at John Martin Reservoir may not
sustain population" too late Friday to get hold of any CDOW staff so
Saturday afternoon I drove out to John Martin Reservoir. I spoke with the
Park Ranger who was pretty familiar with the Piping Plover and Least
Terns. He said that CDOW intend to continue to put up nesting barriers and
signage as they have in the past but that they have found any of the birds
starting to nest yet. He further said that a person has been hired to
manage the nesting T birds at John Martin Res and added that this person
is also assigned to check on the Queens Reservoirs (there is plenty of
water in most of the series of lakes where Piping Plover and Least Tern
have nested in the past).

I didn't have time to drive the north shore but did drive over to the
southeast shore main road. I was happy to see that this road was blocked
about hundred feet back from the current shoreline (water is very high) and
previous 2 track entrances are also well blocked so at least vehicles
cannot access the south shore from the eastern end west to the private
property. Below is a photo of that. I did drive down to entry to private
property along the south and saw a vehicle on shore (see 2nd pic)

I will be following up on the issue of maintaining habitat this week.
Nesting T species in the Arkansas Valley are a high prioity to the

[cobirds] Wood Ducks very high up a tree, 'house hunting' along the Canon City Riverwalk

2018-04-09 Thread SeEttaM
A few days ago while walking on the Canon City Riverwalk I spotted a male

above the ground. After watching it for a bit a female Wood Duck appeared
from behind a large branch in the same tree but about 10-15 feet below the
male. I took a pic that shows how high up the male was above the ground
that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog

Yellow-rumped Warblers, both Audubon and Myrtles, have been moving through
the Canon City Riverwalk for the past 5 or 6 days.

First of the year male Broad-tailed Hummingbird buzzed me 2 days ago on the

Yesterday I spotted 1 Great Egret on the far side of the east Valco Ponds

[cobirds] Canon City area update--Tunnel Drive access, Eastern and Black Phoebes

2018-04-03 Thread SeEttaM .
I am back from being out of commission. Regarding access on Tunnel Drive
to the lower area around the water pumping building: the city has always
wanted to stop public access to this area since it is a part of the city's
water infrastructure. While I doubt that ISIS or some other persons/groups
who want to sabotage a drinking water system for publicity has ever heard
of Canon City or would find it to be the best place to make a big terrorist
impact, the city had the fence installed around the new parking area for
the Tunnel Drive Trail in order to fence the public out. Rufous-crowned
Sparrows can still be found by walking the trail, sometimes right at the
bottom but often a mile or so up the trail.

I have seen Black Phoebes in the last 2 days as follows:
--1 at Florence River Pak
--1 seen from the MacKenzie Ave bridge over the Arkansas River
--1 at Sell's Lake

I have seen Eastern Phoebes today as follows:
--2 (foraging together) along Tunnel Drive Road (seen at several locations)
--2 (foraging together) near the Sell's Lake trailhead to the Canon City
Riverwalk

I haven't got my phoebe pics up yet but I have uploaded some very good pics
of Evening Grosbeaks in Lincoln Park and an Eastern Bluebird near
Pathfinder Park onto my Birds and Nature blog

[cobirds] Fwd: Leucistic dark morph Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk in Otero County

On my drive back from an extended trip to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas I
spotted several dark morph Harlan's Red-tailed Hawks including one apparent
leucism. I usually see several Harlan's Hawks every year but I have never
seen a leucistic one and it was most striking. I have uploaded several
photos of the bird onto my Birds and Nature blog
<https://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/>.

It was a productive drive from Lamar to Canon City with a total of 36
Red-tailed Hawks (including several Harlan's) and 1 Northern Harrier viewed
as I drove down H50. This corridor is usually quite productive for raptors
but was especially so this trip.

My blog has some interesting birds I photographed in the Rio Grande Valley
including Blue Bunting and Rose-throated Becard for those interested.

[cobirds] Yellow-bellied and Williamson's Sapsuckers in Canon City

2017-12-07 Thread SeEttaM .
It has been a slow fall for sapsuckers in the Canon City area this year. I
found my first Williamson's Sapsucker on Oct 10 in a dry gulch south of
town then didn't find any in Canon City until November. Things have picked
up in the past week with an immature male Yellow-bellied, 2 male
Williamson's and 1-2 female Williamson's Sapsuckers around town. Note I
do not post specific locations as there are a couple of local photographers
who have pushed sapsuckers feeding at lower areas of trees by approaching
until they flush them. I have a few photos of the Yellow-bellied and a
bright male Williamson's uploaded along with some natural history info for
sapsuckers in this area on my Birds and Nature blog

[cobirds] Red-necked Grebe at Holbrook Reservoir in Otero Co. yesterday

first one posted on Ebird for this location. I got a few reasonable good
pics of the grebe that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog.
Nothing else rare down there and I
will post about some other interesting sightings from that trip a little
later.

Just a note that there was a Common Loon at Brush Hollow Reservoir near
Penrose on Oct 30. Also of note is that Lewis's Woodpeckers have returned
to the Canon City area after almost 2 years absence (pics of one of them in

[cobirds] First of the season Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk in Canon City

2017-10-20 Thread SeEttaM .
I spotted the first Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk of the season yesterday in
Canon City. Like about 90% of the Harlan's it is a dark morph (from
Ligouri and Sullivan) .As many Colorado birders know Harlan's migrate down
from their far north breeding range to winter along the front range and the
Arkansas River Valley. I got a few photos of the bird that I have posted on
my Birds And Nature blog.

Earlier in the week there was a good movement of Yellow-rumped Warblers
that stopped over in Canon City to fuel their migration. Typical appearing
Black Phoebes have been moving through Canon City for the past month or
so. Usually I see them at Florence River Park but haven't seen any there
since mid summer. A large number of White-throated Swifts congregated for
feeding in west Canon City a week ago.

Re: [cobirds] Butterflies. (and birds). Douglas

2017-09-19 Thread SeEttaM .
This was posted on Arthropods Colorado facebook group tonight regarding the
Painted Ladies:

"Kate Hogan

A note about the Painted Lady phenomenon - I am colleagues with Dr. Mike
Weissmann who consults on butterfly houses all over the world and started
the Butterfly Pavilion - he shared this with me today: "This is an unusual
population burst that really has more to do with their success locally and
I don't believe is related to any migration. Painted Lady butterflies in
our area are originally from the Sonoran region of northern Mexico and
southern Arizona/New Mexico/California. There they live year-round, and
their population grows during our winter. In the spring, they migrate north
as the weather warms and their food resources in the Sonora become
depleted. This is a one-way migration, and they repopulate the USA each
spring this way. If they had a mild/moist winter with lots of host plant
growth and a low parasite load, we see a massive migration moving north in
the spring, around the time that the lilac bushes are in bloom. If we have
a good spring with lots of nectar and hostplants (they like thistle around
here, but their normal hostplant is mallow and related species), then they
are able to reproduce in fairly large numbers here. What we are seeing now
is the result of a mild local summer with lots of early-season moisture and
a low parasite load creating the right conditions for their population to
explode here, even though their numbers in the spring during the northbound
migration weren't record-setting. Also, the rabbitbrush is in full bloom,
so they have a lot of nectar to keep them going, as well as a great spot to
congregate where we can see a lot of them feeding all at once. However,
this is not like the monarchs heading south - painted lady butterflies have
a one-way migration. Those you see flying around and any eggs/larvae they
produce will die when the frosts come. Meanwhile, the home population in
the Sonoran region will continue on, and next spring more will migrate
north to temporarily repopulate our area again."

[cobirds] Gray Flycatchers, Juniper Titmouse and Black-throated Grey Warblers in Red Canyon Ok north of Canon City

2017-07-23 Thread SeEttaM .

Black-throated Grey Warblers on 2 visits to Red Canyon Park which is
located 8 miles north of Canon. Red Canyon Park is one of Canon City's 3
mountain parks. This park has nice Pinyon-juniper habitat with sections of
scrub oak in which these species nest. I got photos of a Gray Flycatcher
and a Black-throated Grey Warbler that in have uploaded to my Birds and

[cobirds] Dickcissels are starting to show up in Canon City and further east

2017-06-18 Thread SeEttaM .
Although I haven't found any Dickcissel in the hay field on MacKenzie Ave
adjacent to Grandview Ave where they have been easily observed in past
several years, there are now 2 Dickcissels further south on the east side
of MacKenzie in the hay field to the north of Adams Ave. Both were singing
frequently today. It is safer to pull over on the west side of the road as
there is a bar ditch next to the fence on the east side of MacKenzie in
that area. If you pull onto Adams you may pique the interest of
Corrections officers since the other side of that road is Dept of
Corrections property (the external security drove over to check me out this
morning. And be careful on MacKenzie as people drive 50+ in that 40 mph
zone. I have not located any Bobolink here yet.

I continue to see Cedar Waxwing near the Sell's Lake area of the Canon City
Riverwalk.

I found 8 Dickcissel in weedy fields on the Fort Lyons Wildlife Area
today. I did not find any in the usual hay fields in the Fort Lyons
area--many fields had already been cut and many had corn instead of alfalfa
planted in them.

My birding was cut short today when I got a flat tire. That is the second
flat this week, both related to birding. Anybody tried those new Run Flat
tires?

I got a photo of the Eastern Phoebe sitting on eggs in Canon City that I
have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog
. As I note on the pics I complied
with *Nestwatch.com * Nest Photography Guidelines.

[cobirds] Phoebes nesting in Canon City

2017-06-17 Thread SeEttaM .
Since I returned from a lengthy out of state trip earlier this week I have
found the Eastern Phoebes nesting again in the same vulnerable spot. In
fact they have just rebuilt the same nest each year for the past several
years I have followed them. The female is apparently sitting on eggs at
this time which is later than prior years and since I saw one of them with
nesting material on 4-23 this might be a second nesting.

I saw an apparent Black Phoebe tonight near the Sell's Lake part of the
Canon City Riverwalk. I had heard one calling from the across the river in
that area 2 days ago. I suspect they are nesting nearby. I also saw a
Black Phoebe on the north side of the Arkansas River near the pedestrian
bridge. I haven't been able to check further down the Riverwalk or at
Florence River Park for phoebes yet.

Today I saw 15 or more Cedar Waxwing along the Arkansas River, with several
in the trees by Sell's Lake.

I haven't added any pics from Canon to my Birds and Nature blog
yet but some may be interested in the
many photos I took from my stay in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas
(ie, N. Beardless Tyrranulet hatchling in nest and adult singing,
Groove-billed Anis, Yellow-Green Vireo, Least Bittern, eastern warblers)

[cobirds] Yellow-throated Warbler still in Mineral Palace Park in Pueblo

2017-06-15 Thread SeEttaM .
Late yesterday afternoon I took advantage of being in Pueblo for my water
planning meetings to look for the Yellow-throated Warbler reported as
recent as this week in Mineral Palace Park. I looked in the northwest part
of the park by 19th and Court where it had been reported as seen but did
not locate it there. So looked further south in the park and at 4:45 pm
heard one sing in the far southwest part of the park but in the center
section. I heard sing 3 times but by when I got to the tree where it was
singing it had flown west a few hundred feet and I heard it sing there.
Singing was infrequent so I left to do some other things. When I came back
around 6:30 pm I heard it sing a number of times high in the trees around
16th and Court. In total I heard it sing 9-10 bars of it's primary song
but never spotted it before I needed to leave.

[cobirds] White-throated Swift flock stopped over to feed near Florence River Park and Barn Owl at Lake Hasty east of Las Animas

2017-05-02 Thread SeEttaM .
Sunday a flock of about 50 White-throated Swifts stopped over near Florence
River Park to feed over the Arkansas River. I have observed good sized
flocks of these swifts doing the same in previous years. A have uploaded a
few pics of them on my Birds and Nature blog.

Today while traveling in far southeastern Colorado I had a little time and
stopped at Lake Hasty to bird for a short time. I was well rewarded when I
spotted a Barn Owl. I got a couple of good pics of it that are on my Birds

[cobirds] Eastern Fremont Co. American Pipits, Great Egret, Clark's Grebe, Snowy Egrets, Black & Eastern Phoebes

2017-05-01 Thread SeEttaM .
I found a flock of about a dozen American Pipits in an agricultural field
yesterday and got some very good photos of them that I have added to my Birds
and Nature blog . I spotted a Great
Egret earlier in the week as well as 2 Snow Egrets at local ponds. Also
saw a single Clark's Grebe, an uncommon visitor here, that came in to the
Canon City Valco Ponds (privately owned with new local owner who is doing
some work on the area) with 22 Western Grebes earlier this week.

I saw both the Eastern Phoebe an apparent Black Phoebe that I think is the
mate to the former at Florence River Park today. I saw the pair of Eastern
Phoebes, that are seen along the river at Tunnel Drive parking area,
yesterday and got some great pics that I will put up tomorrow on my blog.

[cobirds] E. Phoebe gathering nest material in Florence River Park and Pygmy Nuthatch excavating nest hole in Beulah

2017-04-15 Thread SeEttaM .
Today I spotting an Eastern Phoebe in Florence River Park. As I watched as
it flew back and forth gathering nesting material and I got a couple of
photos of it with nesting material in it's beak. I have uploaded those to
my Birds and Nature blog as well as 2
other pics of this phoebe. I also spotted it's mate and on closer
inspection it is probably a hybrid Eastern X Black Phoebe. I wasn't able to
get a pic of it but will work on that.

I also found another Black Phoebe on the utility wires above the train
bridge at the entrance to Holcim Wetlands. Note these wetlands and trail
are still closed (though I am seeing fishermen entering anyway) but I could
easily see the phoebe from the side of CR20 with my binoculars. Fyi, the
wetlands are really not wetlands since the river flooded the wetlands and
made a large entrance and large exit for water to the river effecting
making the pond just another leg of the river which has never been
repaired.

Also on my Birds and Nature blog are some photos of a Pygmy Nuthatch that I
found excavating it's nest hole when I
was in Beulah last week.

[cobirds] Acorn Woodpecker at Pueblo Mountain Park in Beulah

2017-04-11 Thread SeEttaM .
I drove up to the Pueblo Mountain Park on Sunday where I found a single
male Acorn Woodpecker. It flew in to the larder tree right off the
headquarters parking area. As it landed about 50 feet right above me I got
several good pics that I have now uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog
. There are a couple of other larder
trees around the park that I have seen these woodpeckers but not Sunday.

Not a lot of other bird activity but the Pygmy Nuthatches were singing and
chasing around.

[cobirds] Black Phoebe update in Canon City area

2017-04-10 Thread SeEttaM .
It is looking to be a very good year for Black Phoebes in Canon City and
Florence. Following is a summary of Black Phoebes I have observed in the
past week in this area:

Canon City near First Street bridge over Arkansas River--observed a pair
foraging together near the bridge. Have had this species in this location
in past and expect nesting nearby.

Canon City at Sell's Lake--continuing pair observed almost daily when I go
down to walk the riverwalk.

Canon City at MacKenzie Ave bridge over the Arkansas River-I continue to
see or hear one or both of the pair I found there about 2 weeks ago.
Historical nesting area. They can be heard and/or seen from the bridge
(caution needed due to heavy traffic).

Florence private property--continuing pair in historical nesting location.

Florence private property--today I spotted one Black Phoebe at an historic
nesting location on this other private property.

Florence River Park--so far I have only seen one Black Phoebe which is
often at the Sewer Plant that is located next to the park. I got a couple
of good pics of this bird that are on my Birds and Nature blog,

just scroll to right under the blog post on the swan.

[cobirds] Trumpeter Swan in Fremont County

2017-04-09 Thread SeEttaM .
We had a rare visit from an adult Trumpeter Swan today starting at the
closed Holcim Wetlands. It has been several years since swans have visited
Fremont County. Unfortunately 2 fishermen ignored the closed signs and
walked into the wetlands where they flushed the swan. It subsequently
landed in a flooded agricultural field in the town of Florence. The ag
field was not large so I was able to get some very good photos and video of
this swan. I kept my car back aways to avoid disturbing the swan and
photographed from inside my car so it stayed and fed and groomed, still
there when I left. I hope it flies back to Holcim Wetlands for the night
where it can in a larger body of water and safer from coyotes or dogs. I
have uploaded some photos onto my Birds and Nature blog
but additional photos and video will
be uploaded later.

[cobirds] Additional Black Phoebes plus Black Phoebe nest building in Canon City area

2017-03-25 Thread SeEttaM .
Yesterday I found an apparent second pair of Black Phoebes along the
Arkansas River near the MacKenzie Ave bridge. This is a location where
this species has nested for some years. They can often be seen from the
bridge on MacKenzie Ave but do be very careful as there is a lot of traffic
here and many are speeding.

Today I found a single Black Phoebe on private property where there has
been historic nesting.

Also today I observed a Black Phoebe gathering and bringing vegetation and
mud to a site I have suspected as a nest site but was unable to confirm in
previous years. I got photos of her and her mate who stayed nearby
including one with her in flight carrying nesting material. I have
uploaded these to my Birds and Nature blog
.

There are a few Turkey Vultures nesting in Canon City.

[cobirds] Black Phoebes, Eastern Phoebes, Turkey Vultures and Yellow-rumped Warblers in Canon City

2017-03-22 Thread SeEttaM .
I have one pair of Black Phoebes that are regularly foraging between Sell's
Lake and the Arkansas River for the past 6 days. I saw a single Black
Phoebe on the river two weeks ago but did not refind it. This pair often
forages near each other. I got a couple of reasonable photos of one of
them including one with a nice tail spread that I have uploaded to my Birds
and Nature blog
.

I also found a pair of Eastern Phoebes returning to a nest site used every
year for past several years. The nest site is very vulnerable due to it's
location.

I spotted my first Turkey Vultures of the year 2 nights ago but have not
seen them since. There were only 3 or 4 birds in the group.

Yellow-rumped Warblers have been migrating through Canon City for the past
several days, just small numbers of them so far.

Also got photos of a couple of Wilson's Snipe that are on my Birds and
Nature blog.

[cobirds] Released Pheasants, wild sapsuckers, Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk and Snow Goose in Canon City area

2016-12-15 Thread SeEttaM .
Just wanted to make folks aware that a local landowner has released a
number of Ring-necked Pheasants in the area of Pathfinder Park which is
located off H115 between Canon City and Florence. It was expected that
they will disperse in the area and I saw my first one today. They will
likely stay in the area along the Arkansas River between MacKenzie Ave and
Florence. While I have seen a wild born pheasant in this area once some
years ago they have been hunted away for some time. He told me he was also
going to purchase some quail to release but I haven't seen any yet or had a
chance to check on that.

I found a Snow Goose today on Canon City's Valco Pond (reminder these are
private property) east pond where a lot of geese and ducks had gathered
near the highway and easily viewed from the parking lot. We have several
sapsuckers in Canon City and Florence as we usually do in the winter. As I
was out of state I don't know when they arrived but I have seen 2
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, one an adult female and the other a juvenile in
Canon City. I have seen 2 male and 1 female Williamson's Sapsucker in
Canon and an adult male Red-naped Sapsucker in Florence.

I found a dark morph Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk in Canon City last week and I
have seen in twice since. These often stay for weeks or sometimes months.

[cobirds] Reminder: Fremont County Eurasian Wigeon is on private property

2016-12-11 Thread SeEttaM .
Now that the ice has melted on Canon City's eastern Valco pond the Eurasian
Wigeon is likely even further back and maybe not viewable from the side of
the road where it has been previously seen. Today a light colored Prius was
in the parking lot and as I drove by I saw a distant birder trespassing far
inside the property . Be aware the property owner is not concerned with
birders seeing their target species. He is a strong private property
rights proponent.

Re: [cobirds] Disturbing bird incident

2016-12-09 Thread SeEttaM .
Thank everyone for sharing about this issue but I have a continuing need
for clarification . Both USFWS and National Audubon as well as a number
of others have previously stated that birds feet don't freeze to metal and
metal feeders are not a risk. Yet clearly some birds have had their feet
stuck to metal feeders or accessories as explained by several in this
thread.

"Birds don’t have sweat glands in their
feet, so they won’t freeze onto metal
feeders. There’s no need to cover
any metal feeders parts with plastic
or wood to protect birds’ feet,
tongues or eyes. "
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t=web=j=https://www.fws.gov/nevada/nv_species/urban_wildlife/forthebirds.pdf=0ahUKEwif5M__4ObQAhWjrlQKHZvEBNg4ChAWCF0wEA=AFQjCNFNKgnEjcF5uo5dnlrJviN2T468yA=y_RjK6BWq4xnsbkazR3-jQ

"“Our fingers may stick to metal ice cube trays because moisture freezes on
contact with frigid metal,” explains Kress. “However, a bird's feet are
covered with dry scales, so there is no surface moisture to freeze to metal
perches. Eyes, tongues, and beaks are usually safe from exposure to metal
feeder parts."
Do Birds Stick to Metal Feeders In Winter? |

Could there be another reason the birds documented in this thread had
their feet stick to metal--maybe there was melted snow on the metal?? Some
other explanation? Or were USFWS and National Audubon just plain wrong?

[cobirds] Very large flock of migrating Common Nighthawks on east side of Florence

2016-08-21 Thread SeEttaM .
Earlier this evening while I walked in Florence River Park on east side of
Florence I spotted a large number of birds flying in a sort of line of
birds. I thought they must be gulls but turned out they were Common
Nighthawks (presumptive, the ones I could see clearly were Common
Nighthawks and that is the likely species). They just kept coming--there
were at least 75 nighthawks in this migrating flock and more likely 100. I
got several good pics including one photo with more than 60 nighthawks in
the picture--I have uploaded them to my Birds and Nature blog.

This was an awesome spectacle especially since Common Nighthawks have been
in decline. The most I think I have seen migrating down the Arkansas River
corridor was 12 birds in 2014.

[cobirds] Latish find of 10 or so male Dickcissel and 1 male Bobolink in Canon City

2016-07-05 Thread SeEttaM .
I have found this and another 9 or so male Dickcissel, and at least one
male Bobolink, in several locations in the Canon City area. I had found
one of each species about a month ago, which was in the usual time frame
for them to be breeding in local hayfields, but could not refind any before
I left on a 2 week out of state trip from which I returned just a few days
ago. . In the past they tended to be in alfalfa hay fields but his year
there are mostly grass hay fields in our area. Surprisingly several of
these are in hay fields that have already had one cut. Even more surprising
is two are in fields that are just tall weeds. Most are staying far back
from public roads but I got a couple of pics of one Dickcissel that I have
uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog.

The Bobolink and at least 2 Dickcissel are in the field that I have posted
about in prior years on MacKenzie Ave halfway from H50 and Grandview Ave.
Please be cautious as MacKenzie is a very busy thoroughfare with traffic
going 40-50 mph.

The safest viewing is possible by going further south on MacKenzie Ave to
Adams Ave--turn off to the east on Adams and the Dickcissel are in the part
of the hay field on the north side that has the alfalfa (becomes more grass
and less alfalfa closer to the house down the road). As this is a dirt
access road to just 2 families there is minimal traffic. I have talked to
the people who live down the lane so they are aware that birders may come
down it, just do not drive or walk into their field, stay on the public
dirt road. Unfortunately the hay field at this location is going to be cut
soon per the owners.

[cobirds] Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Lazuli Buntings, W Tanagers, Cedar Waxwings, Bullock's Oriole in Canon City today

2016-05-08 Thread SeEttaM .
I found a number of first of the year (FOY) birds for Canon City along the
Canon City Riverwalk today including a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak and
possibly a female with him, but both were at the tip top of a 60+ ft tall
cottonwood so could not get good view of her (or pics). FOY Lazuli
Buntings were singing all along the Riverwalk up to a half mile east of the
Sell's Lake trailhead. I heard at least 4-5 singing and did see and
photograph one of them. FOY Western Tanagers, at least 5 males, were also
along both trails going east from the Sell's Lake trailhead. The
Black-chinned Hummingbird was still working on her nest above the parking
lot.

I found at least a dozen Cedar Waxwings feeding on fruit in hackberry trees
and tender shoots on other trees in Veteran's Park which is located along
H50 in town. And I spotted a FOY male Bullock's Oriole on the west side of
town high up in a cottonwood tree.

I got pics of Lazuli Bunting, Western Tanager and Cedar Waxwing that I have
uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog .

[cobirds] Black-and-White Warbler, Red-headed Woodpecker, hummer building nest on Canon City Riverwalk yesterday

2016-05-07 Thread SeEttaM .
Yesterday the Arkansas Valley Audubon Society co-sponsored a field trip to
the Canon City Riverwalk with Leon Bright and I co-leading with Steve Olson
and Ron Torretta from the Forest Service. The Red-headed Woodpecker was
refound and viewed by the 7 adults and 2 children participating. Steve
Olson spotted a Black-and-White Warbler but it disappeared before others
could view it (I was going to look for it this morning but they had a big
foot race going that precluded birding and when I looked after the race I
did not find it, or for that matter many birds).

Also spotted was a Black-chinned Hummingbird building a nest right over the
parking lot. I got a couple of photos of that and have uploaded them to
my Birds and Nature blog.

Re: [cobirds] Development in Sensitive Bird Areas in Fountain Creek Regional Park (FCRP), El Paso County

2016-05-02 Thread SeEttaM .
For those of us from outside of Colorado Springs it is a good idea to
mention, if at all applicable, that when you visit Fountain Creek Regional
Park for birding you spend money in El Paso County (ie gas, food,
shopping). That is the only reason they will care about our input as we
are not voters/citizens there.

[cobirds] Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk near Lamar

2016-03-15 Thread SeEttaM .
I drove through the Lamar area yesterday and spotted a typical dark
Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk--black body except for whitish breast, mostly
white tail, black underwing coverts with light underside of the flight
feathers.. While not late yet with a few seen this month around eastern
Colorado, it is getting time for these Alaska breeders to be heading north.
I haven't seen any of the several we had in Canon City for about a month.

I spotted a Greater Roadrunner in Fremont County recently and have uploaded
a series of 6 photos to my Birds and Nature blog
.

[cobirds] Black Phoebe along Canon City Riverwalk today

2016-02-08 Thread SeEttaM .
I found a Black Phoebe today foraging and calling along the Arkansas River
near the Sell's Lake trailhead for the Canon City Riverwalk. I don't know
if it has been further down the river trail since that has been, and still
is, closed for repairs to the trail structure.

Yesterday I drove part of the way up the Bighorn Sheep Canyon that runs
along H50 from Canon City to Salida where I found this adult Bald Eagle
perched down at the edge of the Arkansas River. I got a series of 7 more
photos of this eagle by the river, perched in a snag and flying that can be
seen on on my Birds and Nature blog at http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com

I also found an immature Bald Eagle near the adult, another adult Bald
Eagle just outside of Westcliffe and an immature Golden Eagle right by the
side of the road between Westcliffe and Wetmore. I only saw one
Rough-legged Hawk in the Westcliffe area and only a few Red-tailed Hawks.

[cobirds] Photo of the Long-tailed Duck in Canon City

2016-01-22 Thread SeEttaM .
I got one photo yesterday of the female Long-tailed Duck found a few days
ago by Rich Miller. It is not the best photo possible as this duck swam to
the back part of this privately owned pond and I got a quick shot of it
from the public parking lot before it swam out of my view. It does show
field marks and it is interesting that it has a lot less black on it's head
than the female Long-tailed Duck I found at Brush Hollow Reservoir in
2012. I haven't seen enough of this species to know if this is just an
individual difference or if the 2012 duck had begun a molt into spring
plumage as shown in Sibleys. I would be interested if anyone knows this.

Unfortunately I lost the media card with the photo of the current duck for
24 hours and just refound it (those sd cards are pretty small). So I have
uploaded that photo onto my Birds and Nature blog
and I have linked the photos of the
2012 Long-tailed Duck in the text of this blog entry.

[cobirds] Canon City Riverwalk-closure of river trail from most of Raynold's to Sell's Lake trail heads

2016-01-21 Thread SeEttaM .
Just an fyi to those who may be wanting to bird the Canon Due to the
necessary heavy construction involved, the River Trail will be closed from
January 18th through March 4th. Cross trails within the park will also be
closed. The Bluff Trail is expected to remain open. "

You can walk the River Trail from the Raynold's Street parking lot a few
hundred feet City Riverwalk to the east edge of the pond/wetlands. From
the Sell's Lake trailhead you can walk the river trail several hundred
yards to where they have fenced it off at the west edge of the old sewer
district fence .

Again, the Bluff trail is open as is the remaining parts of the Canon City
Riverwalk from MacKenzie Ave to just before the Tunnel Drive trails parking
lot which I posted the other day as closed. Sorry there has been no time
frame given for this project that I am aware of as this is the official
notice: "Tunnel Drive Trail and Trailhead will be closed until further
notice for the completion of trailhead and drainage improvements. Please do
not park in or walk through the construction zone." I have posted a few
photos of the extensive construction taking place at this location onto my
personal facebook page that can be seen by clicking here
.
I will update here as needed.

[cobirds] Tunnel Drive trail area in Canon City (ie Rufous-crowned Sparrows) closed due to construction

For those wanting to look for Rufous-crowned Sparrows on Tunnel Drive in
Canon City be aware that entire area (service road to building at bottom;
trail parking lot and the trail itself) are closed for major construction
to repair damage from heavy water last summer. I stopped by today and they
have big heavy equipment including 2 front loaders working on moving
boulders and dirt. The city which owns this area has officially closed it
to the public until construction is completed.

[cobirds] Unusually large flock of Eastern Bluebirds in Canon City area and Pathfinder Park

2016-01-02 Thread SeEttaM .
Yesterday I found a flock of at least 20 but more likely 30 or more Eastern
Bluebirds on private property in the Canon City area. I followed them as
they moved on and into the Pathfinder Park between Canon City and
Florence. There they settled in some Russian Olive trees that had a lot of
olive fruit on them. They appeared to be feeding on these fruit that were
of small size. I got some good photos of them and now that I finally have
my computer back and working I have uploaded them to my Birds and Nature

I have had my computer either poorly or in and out of the repair shop for a

And I found a Taiga Merlin while on the Canon City Riverwalk almost 2
weeks ago but right before my computer stopped working. Finally got it
back from the shop and running almost good (it has eaten photos twice-thank
goodness for SanDisk Rescue Pro Deluxe for recovering a whole bunch of
photos). I was able to watch this Merlin for a full half hour. While it
just perched and looked around for much of that my patience was rewarded by
a fantastic acrobatic flight show. I got a number of good pics that I have
also uploaded to my blog. Unfortunately I have not seen this Merlin
since.

[cobirds] Fwd: Grant application to remove most of the Russian Olive trees in the Black Hole at Two Buttes in Baca County

2015-12-03 Thread SeEttaM .

Subject: Grant application to remove most of the Russian Olive trees in the
Black Hole at Two Buttes in Baca County

I thought I could just provide summary info on this Russian Olive/Tamarisk
removal project but in reviewing this I find some important info further
down the application. So anyone interested in this proposed project may
want to review the rest of the info I am copying below.

[cobirds] Grant application to remove most of the Russian Olive trees in the Black Hole at Two Buttes in Baca County

2015-12-03 Thread SeEttaM .
I am asking for feedback about a grant application to remove most of the
Russian Olive trees and all of the more sparse Tamarisk in the wildlife
area east of the Two Buttes Dam in Baca County including the Black Hole
area that is much coveted by birders. I am in a position as a member of
the executive committee of the Arkansas Basin Roundtable (we do water
planning for the Arkansas Basin) to give feedback about this grant proposal
and any potential deleterious impacts it may have on birds and other native
species. I expect that the timing of the vegetation removal is critical so
please provide what time period you believe should be off-limits and why
and especially any documentation to back up the need to not allow
vegetation disturbance. I am copying the grant proposal below. I need
the feedback by Sunday night so I have time to prepare for a meeting in
which this will be discussed next Wednesday.

Thanks in advance.

SeEtta Moss
Canon City
http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com

<<"Estimated Completion Date:June 30, 2018
Brief description of project:
The Two Buttes Dam and Wildlife Area is listed on the State Register of
Historic Places. It is Colorado Parks & Wildlife property, with the Two
Buttes Wildlife Area extending between cliffs below the dam. Russian olive
has taken over the understory of the wildlife area below the dam. For this
project and timeline, the goal of this project is to suppress the
infestation of Russian olive to 10% - 20% of the understory from the
current estimate of 30% to 40% of the existing understory with some dense
pockets. Some tamarisk is present, which we will eradicate. A bare-dirt
area above the Black Hole is eroding into the Black Hole. Colorado Parks &
Wildlife is currently using this area as part of a canal restoration
project. They intend to grade this area when they are done. Native
shrubs, and grasses will need to be planted near the top of the cliffs to
prevent further erosion into the Black Hole.
Management Goals
This project seeks to improve water quality and quantity, improve
wildlife habitat, and enhance recreational opportunity in the Two Buttes
Reservoir and Wildlife Area through:
(1) The eradication of tamarisk and suppression Russian olive from the 30
acres of wildlife area east of the Two Buttes Dam;
(2)  The introduction of different native species to the riparian ecosystem;
(3)  The suppression of erosion into the Black Hole;
(4) The eradication of other List B and List C noxious weed species west
of Two Buttes Dam.
Management Objectives
Suppress Russian olive understory from the current estimated 30% - 40%
to 10% - 20% of understory area by June 2018.
Eradicate tamarisk from wildlife area downstream from the dam to
private land by June 2017.
Reintroduce native willow cover in and around the Black Hole to help
prevent tamarisk reestablishment by June 2018.
Plant grass, and native shrubs above the west cliffs to suppress
erosion into the Black Hole. These erosion controls are to be completed by
June 2018.
Eradicate common mullein and other List B and List C weeds as agreed
upon by CPW around Two Buttes Reservoir.
Integrated Pest Management
Biological
Planting grass and native shrubs above the west cliffs will help
prevent invasive weed seeds from washing down into the Black Hole.
Planting willows where tamarisk currently resides will prevent the
high-light environment which allowed tamarisk to establish itself.
Mechanical
A tractor with “jaws” will pull out small- to medium-sized Russian
olive trees and mature tamarisk plants.
Mulching may be necessary to economically dispose of the plant material.
Department of Corrections manual labor may be used to pull small
Russian olive saplings.
Manual collection of common mullein seed heads will take place as
plants mature or recover.
Chemical
‘Hack and squirt’ with aquatic-approved herbicide will be used to kill
the large Russian olive trees. Because the cottonwood canopy is well
established, cut stump treatment could be used. However, hack-and-squirt
will kill the trees in place, reducing the risk of damaging the cottonwoods
during removal of the Russian olives, and retaining the structure of the
Russian olives for habitat use in the near future.
Foliar spray will be used to control tamarisk recovery.
Cut stump or foliar spray will be used on Russian olive undergrowth as
it recovers from the biological and/or mechanical controls.
Spot (foliar) spraying will occur on List B and List C weeds found west
of the dam.
Secondary/Subsequent Weed Control
Quarterly control of new sprouts for tamarisk and Russian olive will
take place. This may be mechanical control (pull the sprouts) or chemical
control (foliar spray). Revegetation in the Black Hole area should occur
passively as Russian olive undergrowth is diminished. Revegetation in this
area will be evaluated on each quarterly visit. Above the Black Hole on
the west side,

[cobirds] Photos of Merlin I found last week feasting on an unknown bird

2015-11-24 Thread SeEttaM .
I have had some computer issues so am behind on photos. I have uploaded
several photos of the Prairie Merlin I found last week in Otero County
including several super enlarged to show the dangling legs and lower body
of a bird it was eating. It's long toes and nails are clearly visible and
it appears it had 2 toes facing forward and one facing back. I am not sure
what species this bird this is. The photos are on my blog @

And it has been brought to my attention that I misidentified the hawk I
thought was a late Broad-winged Hawk.

of Lake Holbrook, on my blog at http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/

[cobirds] Very late Broad-winged Hawk in eastern Pueblo County

2015-11-21 Thread SeEttaM .
I mentioned in my earlier post about seeing an additional hawk species and
that was a very late Broad-winged Hawk in far eastern Pueblo County. I
checked ebird and found a few other late Broad-wing sightings including one
on Nov 7 in Illinois, several along the East Coast just last week and a few
in Texas--few compared to the hundreds of thousands that pass hawk watches
along very southern U.S. this fall. I did check today but did not refind it
in the area I saw it in. I have now uploaded 2 pics of this bird onto my
blog @ http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/

[cobirds] 3 Harlan's Red-tailed Hawks, 1 Merlin and 1 Prairie Falcon yesterday in Pueblo & Otero Counties

2015-11-20 Thread SeEttaM .
Yesterday (Thurs) I drove out east of Pueblo to look for Harlan's
Red-tailed Hawks and any other raptors that might be around. I was
rewarded with 3 Harlan's, 1 Merlin and 1 Prairie Falcon in addition to 7
Western Red-tailed Hawks, 1 other hawk species and a number of American
Kestrels. I got photos of the Merlin, the Prairie Falcon and 2 of the
Harlans. I have only uploaded pics of the Harlan's that I found in eastern
Pueblo County It can be seen on my blog at
http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/ I will get the other pics uploaded
tomorrow.

[cobirds] Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk in Pueblo County

2015-11-10 Thread SeEttaM .
On my way home from Pueblo tonight I took a detour south and found a dark
morph Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk. It was at dusk but I got two pics that
show field marks that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog
.

I also did a little birding at Pueblo State Park this afternoon but saw
very little. It is a good thing that Curve-billed Thrashers are so
reliable when one looks in the right habitat and I did see one whose photos
I also uploaded. On my way down to Pueblo I checked Brush Hollow Res that
only had a couple of Ring-billed Gulls, a few common distant ducks and a
half dozen Western Grebes. Saw the same basic birds there over the
week-end but did get to watch a Peregrine make a try for one of the Western
Grebes.

[cobirds] First of the season Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk in Canon City

2015-11-02 Thread SeEttaM .
I spotted a Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk from the MacKenzie Ave end of the
Canon City Riverwalk over the week-end. I got two pics which show it's
white lorals and cheeks,
whitish chest, whitish underside of tail with otherwise blackish feathering
that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog
.

Yesterday I enjoyed at least 10 Yellow-rumped Warblers foraging in a mixed
flock on that same MacKenzie Ave part of the Canon City Riverwalk. Since
we usually have overwintering Yellow-rumps it is hard to know if these are
latish migrants for just birds that will stay around over the winter.
There was a Black Phoebe in that same area on Friday but haven't seen it
since.

[cobirds] Rufous-crowned Sparrows and fly-over Sandhill Cranes at Tunnel Drive in Canon City

2015-10-22 Thread SeEttaM .
I drove over to Tunnel Drive at the far west end of Canon City today
looking for Rufous-crowned Sparrows and found 2. They were in the company
of Canyon Towhees, an association I frequently observe in this location. I
got some reasonably good pics of them that I have uploaded to my Birds and
Nature blog . A Canyon Wren called
and finally sang it's song one time. Lot of Lesser Goldfinch in that
location-I suspect some are migrating and stopped over due to weather.

Also a flock of about 65 Sandhill Cranes circled a number of times at
fairly low altitude (due to overcast conditions?) then headed up into the
Royal Gorge canyon--I never can figure out why birds migrating fly the
directions they do.

[cobirds] Dickcissels in fields along Squirrel Creek Rd in El Paso County

2015-08-05 Thread SeEttaM .
Yesterday I decided to do some birding east of Colorado Springs after an
appointment in town and as I drove on Squirrel Creek Rd I heard a
Dickcissel. When I turned around and drove back I found at least 4 and
likely 6 Dickcissels were singing actively in sunflower fields on both
sides of the road (would seem to indicate they are guarding territory and
that females are likely nesting in there). Though I didn't remember reading
about Dickcissels along Squirrel Creek Rd in posts here this year, I
subsequently found a post recently by Stephen Getty of a singing Dickcissel
on Milne Rd about 1 km south of Squirrel Creek Rd in an overgrown lot. The
location I saw the Dickcissels yesterday was several miles from Milne Rd.
On ebird there was a sighting of 3 Dickcissels much further west at
Squirrel Creek Res. The location I had them was east of Williams Creek
(there aren't many crossroads out there). I will look thru more online
maps to see if I can pin the location down better. I got a couple of pics
of one of the Dickcissels that I have uploaded onto my Birds and Nature blog
http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/ along with discussion about the use
of sunflower habitat.

[cobirds] Spotted Sandpiper chicks still with parent at Florence River Park and 4 Chimney Swifts in Canon City

2015-07-28 Thread SeEttaM .
The two Spotted Sandpiper chicks along with their very protective parent
continue at Florence River Park. Now that they are a little older the
parent, who gives warning calls for them to stay hidden in heavy vegetation
when it is concerned, has let the chicks come out into the open to practice
their sandpiper skills along the river's edge which provided me the
opportunity to get some good pics of both chicks and the parent that I have
uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog.

Tonight as I worked in my yard I heard then briefly saw 4 Chimney Swifts
flying together. I have seen several Chimney Swifts off and on this summer
over the downtown Canon City area and wonder if these may be a family
unit. No photos, too quick and distant.

[cobirds] Spotted Sandpiper chicks and parent still at Florence River Park

2015-07-23 Thread SeEttaM .
I have been checking on the Spotted Sandpiper chicks and parent I posted
about 3 days ago. Though the area in Florence River Park is fraught with
hazards (such as off leash dogs, men engaged in gold panning and horses)
the parent is still guarding chicks. I was fearful 3 days ago that men
who were gold panning right where the chicks and parent had been, and who
had a large off leash dog with them, would have scared the parent off
(which would have been deadly for the young chicks even if they had hid
from the dog) but I refound the parent and chicks later that evening. When
I refound the 2 chicks 2 days ago I got two more pics that I have uploaded
to my Birds and Nature blog. http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/
Yesterday and today I refound the parent but I didn't time to refind the
chicks. Given the parents guarding behavior I expect the one or both chicks
are ok.
