scope I would think it difficult to see a diminutive Horned Grebe well from
so far away.

I noticed an abundance on my Dunkley Pass BBS route in the Flat Tops last
week and even more Swainson's Thrushes than normal too. My Gold Hill 2 BBS
route around Ward and Jamestown had the normal amount too. Must be a
southern phenomenon.

I'm one of those birders that hasn't managed to find a huge flock this
year. I've had a total of 6 in a mixed flock in junipers near Marston Lake
a couple days ago after at least 6 visits to the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt. I
keep looking...

And this may explain my bad luck at the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt since I was
usually looking in the late afternoon after working and while walking the
dog. They were probably all headed to their evening roosts by the time I
arrived.

Hulled sunflower gives higher caloric value for less work as it doesn't
have to be cracked to be eaten. I think your birds have just gotten
smarter, that's all.

And I was recently birding in the foothills where I watched a Red-tailed
hawk flyover calling repeatedly. Merlin ID'd it as a Steller's Jay! Is that
the opposite of mimicry?
