Not able to get Debian packages using FTP

1997-12-25 Thread Arihant

Hi There,
I had successfully installed the base
system on my Intel PC.Now I run DSELECT, FTP access, give ftp site :
ftp.debian.org; debian dir: /pub/debian;download dir: debian etc, I get this
error : NET::FTP:bad host name 'ftp.debian.org' at
/usr/lib/perl5/Net/FTP.pm line 405 FTP error,script exit status
1.
Any idea what is the problem and its
solution? One thing I think is that, I should have already connected to my ISP
to get files over internet, but I am not sure how to start the connection in
Linux. Please let me know what is to be done.
Thanks in advance
arihant

Hi! I am a new Linux user converted from Windows NT. :).
I have a 17 inch monitor, but my XFree86 insists on displaying in an
approximately 15 inch rectangle of my screen. How do I configure it to fill
 the whole screen?
You do that with your monitor... it has functions on it, to make it wider,
and taller.

Also! Is there an equivalent of Microsoft's file manager for X
 windows?
  Equivalent? No, and god forbid...

There are several file managers... one really good, which I think just made
it into Debian, is Xplore. But, to acquire such managers that work completely
you need to purchase motif, and/or CDE.

PPP dialup. :(.

1997-12-25 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Thanks to everyone who helped me before!... Now I have a somewhat more
complicated looking problem. :(.

I'm trying to dial into my ISP using PPP. (At this point I haven't done any
extra configuration besides network config info that the debian setup asks
for).
In X, I startup minicom, dial, and login manually. It then tells me that it
has started PPP and to start my PPP, whereupon it starts displaying the
usual garbage.
I open a bash term and type pppd, and it starts displaying its garbage.
I open another bash term, and try to ping my ISP's domain server, and it
tells me that the network is unreachable. :(. Afew seconds later, minicom
hungup.
My ppp.log says
Dec 24 22:56:58 jade pppd[325]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0
Dec 24
22:56:58 jade pppd[325]: Using interface ppp0
Dec 24 22:56:58 jade
pppd[325]: Connect: ppp0 -- /dev/ttyp2
Dec 24 22:57:28 jade pppd[325]:

Dec 24 22:57:28 jade pppd[325]:

Dec 24 22:57:28 jade pppd[325]: Receive serial link
is not 8-bit clean:
Dec 24 22:57:28 jade pppd[325]: Problem: nothing was
received
Dec 24 22:57:28 jade pppd[325]: Exit.

So, then I follow the configuration instructions in section 6 (Network
Installation) of the Debian Users Guide. Putting... (Most of which was
there already).
/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 jade

/etc/resolv.conf
domain cablenett.net
search cablenett.net
nameserver 196.3.144.2
nameserver 196.3.144.3

/etc/host.conf
order hosts,bind
multi on

/etc/ppp/options
debug

/dev/ttyS0
38400
modem
crtscts
lock
connect /etc/ppp/ppp-connect
asyncmap 0
defaultroute

Then I try again, going through the same process as described before. This
time, my PPP doesn't output anything, pinging the DNS server's IP still
generates a network unreachable message, I still get hungup, and the PPP
log also says:
Dec 24 23:10:28 jade pppd[350]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0
Dec 24
23:10:28 jade pppd[350]: Device ttyS0 is locked by pid 321
Dec 24 23:10:28
jade pppd[350]: Exit.

Something is really weird because, previously, I was using RedHat for a
while and the same stuff with network unreachable messages and getting
hungup would happen. :(.

Can anyone help me?
Thanks alot!!!
Timothy

PPP Dialup

1997-12-25 Thread Will Lowe

 PS: Merry Christmas everyone! :)
And also to you.

Now, as for the ppp problem: which version of pppd are you using? the
one from stable or unstable?

It seems that you're able to dial ok, and you have a routine worked out
for starting up ppp on the remote machine, so you ought to make this a
chat script so you don't have to try to do this by hand. I have a feeling
that dialing up via minicom and then trying to start pppd manually may be
part of the problem -- you should be able to set up pppd to dial and log
into the remote host via chat.

Let me know if you need help with this part, and let me know which pppd
you're using -- the setup is somewhat different.

This is normal, considering the way you are trying to do it. Read on...

You are closer here. ttyS0 is locked by your minicom session. Forget
minicom. All the info you need to dial should be in /etc/ppp/ppp-connect.
Edit that file and put in the info needed, and then simply type

pppd

libc info

Hi all.

I've just been browsing the GNU site trying to find out what the
differences in the C libraries are and i could find no mention of
libc5, libc6 or glibc.

I know that Debian is in the process of moving to libc6 and that RH
has already (somewhat shakily) moved to glibc.

Is libc6 just another way of saying glibc?

If you can refer me to any site/doc to satisfy my curiosity, please do

Personally I'm happy to continue tinkering with the compiler/libs
which came with my Deb 1.3.1 CDs but I am curious about the changes.

 2) also, debian runs a number of rcp services out of inetd so make sure
/etc/hosts.allow and .deny are set up correctly.

All the rpc serves in /etc/inetd.conf are commented out. portmap
is running as daemon, and rpc.nfsd/mountd as root.

 3) You can client -- server does not work, do you mean that the server is
unable to mount a client drive? Does it give an error?

From the client, I cannot mount a server drive:

bash-2.00# mount yodeller:/usr/local/rising /mnt
mount clntudp_create: RPC: Program not registered

[8:12pm] [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ rpcinfo -p yodeller

151 udp937 mountd
152 udp937 mountd
151 tcp940 mountd
152 tcp940 mountd

yodeller is the server, silly the client (aka dialup-2 due to dynamic
IPs);

[8:13pm] [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ rpcinfo -p dialup-2
   program vers proto port
102 tcp111 portmapper

151 udp834 mountd
152 udp834 mountd
151 tcp837 mountd
152 tcp837 mountd

So with rpcinfo, server - server, client - client, and server - client
works, but the crucial one, client - server, doesn't. It certainly
appears to be some sort of firewall problem but there's a direct
link between them (PPP), no masquerading etc.

I can even mount drives server - client (ie on yodeller
I can mount drives on silly). But not the other way around.

I've just been browsing the GNU site trying to find out what the
differences in the C libraries are and i could find no mention of
 libc5, libc6 or glibc.

My understanding isn't complete, and may in fact be downright wrong, but I
believe that libc6 is the second GNU libc and that libc4 (the old a.out
system) was the first one. The migration away from the GNU libc (to libc5
which was ELF) I don't know the reasons for but presumably was becase
this other libc was more fully developed at the time.

Is libc6 just another way of saying glibc?

Yep. Debian is calling it libc6, RedHat is calling it glibc (GNU libc).
I don't know what the offical name is amoung linux users is.

If you can refer me to any site/doc to satisfy my curiosity, please do
 so.

The Free Software Foundation's web site is probably as good a place as any
to start. Try here:

you would include \r in the string you are sending. Just FYI, everything
works in pairs of

lookfor send

so, if you are trying to watch for your login prompt, then send your userid
you'd have something like:

oginmy_id

You can also have 'sub-pairs' of 'expect'/'send' like this for hitting
enter a few times:

ogin--ogin--ogin--ogin--oginmy_id

The chat program will look for ogin, not seeing it send what is after the
- , which in this case is nothing, so will send a CR, then watch for
ogin , etc until it gets to the end of the string. If it sees ogin
anywhere in that sequence, it will drop out and send my_id. If you
find you really need to send the \r, you should make the sequence
look like this:

ogin-\r-ogin-\r-ogin-\r-ogin my_id

Tim

PS: This is all bringing back horrible memories of HDB uucp

It's important, to be able to keep time in nanoseconds on a computer... and
 as
we all know, 1601 is an important date ;-)

Now why they didn't keep with the VMS standard, which also had a
64-bit time structure (I forget the resolution), with time 0 sometime
in 1858, I'll never know.

(the 1858 date was chosen because that is, in fact, astronomical time
0, so VMS was indeed adhering to a pre-existing standard)

Jan Francsi [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 Hello,
I have a little problem with the installation of Debian Linux.
When I start dselect and go to the Access section, I can chose cdrom. My
drive spinns up and the dialog beginns. But now I could not chose the right
Directory. Evrytime I do so, dselect says Dir don´t exists. I have checked
under win95 and the dir´s are there
on my cd it must be Debian/Local .

Well, if it's one of the official CDs, using the directory name /
should work. (this will cause dselect to display stuff about
directories that have two slashes, which looks ugly to me, but it
works...) If your CD isn't organized like an official CD, you'll have
to find the right directory.

when I check the cdrom Path (ls /cdrom) in a second shell, nothing was in
 it. Is this ok ?
If not, how can I mount a CD and where do I find it ?

Well, that is to be expected, since dselect mounts the cdrom in a
place of its own choosing, not in /cdrom. To find out where it is
mounted, after you've selected your cdrom inside dselect and it's been
mounted (you can tell because that'll be when it spins up), switch to
another console and issue the mount command. See where it says your
cdrom device is mounted (probably /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt) Then,
look inside that directory and see what's there - you're looking for a
directory named stable or bo - if, for example, you can find these
directories by doing:
 ls /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt/
then you can use / for the directory when asked by dselect.
If you find these directories by doing:
 ls /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt/Debian
Then answer Debian when asked for the directory by dselect.

The common answer to each above is TCP/IP, and SMB. Windows
machines (3.11 and better) will talk to each other using
NETBEUI. Add TCP/IP as a protocol in windows. Under Linux, you
should install samba, which will talk to your windows machines
using SMB over TCP/IP, the same as an NT or 95 or 3.11 machine.

To talk linux to linux, use NFS, and the lpr system can print to
'remote' printers on other *nix systems.

PPP is still a disaster. :(. Please Help. :)

1997-12-25 Thread Timothy Hospedales
I made to try out everyone's suggestions for getting my PPP dialup to
work.
The first thing that happened is t hat when I turned on my
computer, for
some reason /dev/mouse was linked to my /dev/ttyS0, and so things refused
to use ttyS0. So I deleted /dev/mouse, but then nothing would detect the
modem on /dev/ttyS0. I then booted off my bootdisk that I made during
debian setup, and it was recognized okay.. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Now, (having booted off the disk), I check my /etc/ppp/ and am
disappointed to find that I have no scripts already there that I can
customize. :(. So, I decited to try a program that was recommended to me by
another user, wvdial (http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial). It starts to work
beautifully, and logs in, detects a ppp, starts my ppp, and then
disconnects, and says the ppp deamon exited with error code 2. I check the
ppp-errors file, and it says that the /etc/ppp/ppp-connect file doesn't
exist.
Now, I take out the line 'connect /etc/ppp/ppp-connect' from the options
file in /etc/ppp/ and dial again. This time it exits with error code 1. The

PS: Assuming I ever get this to work, does anyone know if Apache or any

I don't think apache will care. The problem lies in the fact that in
order to connect to your apache server, I've got to know your IP address,
or your hostname (which is essentially the same thing, because it'll get
resolved to your ip address), and those'll keep changing, so getting
people to _find_ your machine might be tough.

Matrox Millenium II vs. #9 Revolution 3D

1997-12-25 Thread Alex Yukhimets
Hi.

I am about to get a new P II system and had to decide on many
alterantives available. My current concern is what video card
would suit me the best. I have no doubt that I would go with AGP one
(even not for the sake of performance, but to save PCI slot :)
and my current choice is between Matrox Millenium II AGP and
Number Nine Revolution 3D AGP. Matrox seems to be the fastest under
X (and free driver is already available from S.u.S.E.), Revolution 3D
is faster under Windows. I do not intend to use Windows a lot, so
the best bet would be Matrox, but I heard the opinion that in spite of
the fact that it is the fastest, it's image quality is substantially
worse than that of Number Nine cards. Could anyone confirm this?

And another thing, assuming I would have to use Accelerated X server
with my card, what are the cons of the fact that server is libc5
compiled and my system will be libc6-based (of course, I would have to
install libc5 runtime libraries also).

I would greatly appreciate any input.

Thanks a lot.
