[slim] Slightly OT: Stylesheet

2010-02-18 Thread carp

My favourite web browser is Opera 10.10 which I use when visiting this
forum. However, I have a small problem when a post contains pictures:
Sometimes they are too wide to fit in the Opera window, and Opera
refuses to show a horizontal scrollbar especially in this forum (see
attached screenshot). A user in an Opera related forum guessed that I
should ask for an amendment in the stylesheet that this (Squeezebox)
forum uses: the line *display:block* will fix the problem with big
pictures.

The corresponding post can be found 'there'

Re: [slim] Sonos is better than Squeezebox in Denmark...

2010-02-18 Thread jimbo45

Hi there
Sonos better than Squeezebox is an absolutely STUPID statement --
different tricks for different markets.

It's like saying a small Smart Car is better than a decent BMW or IPOD
type bud headphones are better than a pair of Bose Noise cancelling
'cans.

The SONOS system is HIDEOUSLY expensive -- true it's considered the
Rolls Royce of this type of application - but the squeezebox system is
the best bang for buck BY FAR -- the quality isn't that far off the
Sonos system either -- plug the duet into a decent amp (with or without
DSP's in it) and it still sounds impressive.

The RADIO also is a very nice piece of kit -- my main grumble was that
I had to buy it wothout the re-chargeable batterry -- almost a MORTAL
SIN for this app since this radio is just ASKING to be carried around.

Works very well indeed for what it does.

If I could affford one I'd buy the SONOS system in an instant -- but my
budget doesn't run to that.

I DO like the squeezebox system a lot --in spite of one or two little
quirks in setting it up from time to time.

Cheers
jimbo

back a little and get the early adopters to do all the work and only
upgrade if opinion out there says its worth it and the application is

[slim] Windows 7 -- Please allow use of LIBRARIES feature

2010-02-18 Thread jimbo45

Hi there
To the Software developers -- For Windows 7 users the Library concept
makes it really easy in defining a Library and then being able to have
the components - such as Music tracks etc put on ANY DISK (or disks)
in your network --making multiple disk handling totally transparent to
the user.

This means you can organize libraries on different disks such as jazz,
Classical, Opera, Heavy metal etc etc etc.

Using the squeezebox system as is you get a Music Folder option.
Thismeans a standard directory in Windows which is restricted to a
single drive.

I think Linux users have an advantage here inb that you can mount
directories to a mount point so you can get a tree system
structure.

Anyway if you could make use of the Windows 7 Libraries feature would
be a great improvment.

Cheers

2010-02-18 Thread andynormancx

While I agree supporting Win7 libraries sounds like a great idea, you
can achieve exactly the same result as you can on Linux under Windows.

Simply create Windows shortcuts in your main music folder pointing at
the other folders on the other discs.

P.S. have you checked that libraries really aren't supported ? I
thought the OS presented them to apps as normal folders ?

The superdatetime problems were a scare, but outside of that and
possibly some of the services not working eventually I'll probably stay
on 7.3.4 as long as my hardware holds out, unless I see some real
improvements which overcome the inconvenience of upgrading.

That's pretty much my feelings as well. I'm on 7.3.4 (with SB3, Boom,
Controller and iPeng) and I don't get the whole apps concept for
Squeezebox. I have no need for social networking (what does it have to
do with playing music?) and I just don't have the appetite for
re-customizing SBS and relearning the Controller interface (the button
changes I've read on the wiki just don't seem intuitive to me). I did
have SuperDateTime running on the Boom and when it broke I simply
disabled it (WeatherTime stills works fine on my SB3).

It is better in a sense that Opera now displays a horizontal scrollbar.

The user in the Opera related forum made another suggestion - create a
css file, containing the line *img.attach {display: block;}* and use
this in the site specific settings for this forum. This works, too - the
pictures in the thread I mentioned are then positioned on top of each
other instead of side by side - but this is only a single user solution
as each Opera user would have to made this change.

[slim] Assigning fixed IP addresses to RADIO etc (NOT THE COMPUTER)

2010-02-18 Thread jimbo45

Hi there
is there any way to assign fixed IP addresses to a Duet / Radio running
on a LAN

I'm often testing stuff remotely as well and with a router for example
you often need to Port Forward to specific machines on your LAN. For
example you want to access a HOME computer from work via RDP (Windows
users) then you need to port forward port 3389 to a specific machine on
your local LAN at home.

Now if my computer is down and I've re-started the Squuezebox devices
before re-booting the computer the squeezebox devices Grab the IP
address that I've assigned to the computer with - predictable results as
you can guess.

Even if you assign a fixed IP address to your computer it doesn't stop
the squeezebox devices grabbing IP addresses if you start them BEFORE
your computer.

It's not really convenient to ensure all the squeezebox devices are
turned OFF before re-booting the computer.

On a LAN with a lot of testing (I'm running 5 or 6 Virtual Machines as
well on this LAN) I really would like the squeezebox devices to have
their own IP addresses to avoid a lot of silly networking problems.

BTW a lot of people having connectivity problems can usually solve
these by switching off their squeezebox devices, restart their router,
reboot the computer and THEN switch on the squeezebox devices.

Cheers
jimbo

You can assign static IP addresses to the Radio, Touch and Controller.

However you could also probably resolve this issue at your router. Set
aside a range in your address space for static IP addresses and set your
computer and VMs to static addresses rather than relying on DHCP.

Hi,

Most routers will allow you to set an IP address for a specific MAC
address. I use a Netgear Router, and it assigns the same address to any
device I have set it to. Look under Attached Devices to get the MAC,
then look under IP Assignments. Add the IP you want, add the MAC for
the device, and you are set... That way you don't even have to touch
the remote hardware.

[slim] Hi-res support

2010-02-18 Thread durufle

So I've exhausted my limited amount of patience waiting for the Touch
and am wondering what my options are for getting 24/96 support in
conjunction with SBS.

I'm not interested in spending $1500+ on a transporter so I'm looking
to the software solutions.

Will either Squeezeslave or Squeezeplay output bit perfect data? Will
either play high-res material? I have a growing number of 24/88.2k and
24/96k files I want to play.

I'd like an easy to use solution (I'm not a linux guy and hacking
around with Alsa drivers last night with Vortexbox was enough to make me
reconsider that approach). I'd like to build a small PC and stick a RME
card in it and output via it's SPDIF port to my Grace DAC.

I'll control everything with iPeng so I don't need a local display -
This which would suggest SqueezeSlave, but I'm not sure how mature it is
or how it will be supported going forward.

Any comments or suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks kindly.

Is it really? An SB3 is $300 and the Sonos preamp models are $350. Add
a decent auto power on amp to the SB3 and you won't be far off the
$500 price of the Sonos amplified model. The Sonos Controller at $350 is
more than the SBC at $250 but it is also a touch screen unit with
proprietary radio linking to the nearest zone player so you get tangible
performance uplifts for the cost difference.

It's true that Sonos does't have anything in their product line to
compete with the cheap and frustrating, non staic IP configuring, no GUI

company should be chasing. When comparing the rest of the Squeezebox

Wrong comparison.
The $350 ZP90 competes exactly with the non static IP
configuring...SB(R) since it

- doesn't support static IP addresses
- actually it doesn't even support wireless access, you need to wire it
or you need an additional $100 Zone Bridge
- You can't really use it without the $350 controller
- It doesn't have a display, which is the most expensive part of the
SB3. Also, you don't pay $300 for an SB3, don't you?

And then your cost comparison looks a bit different.

Thanks for the correction... I did of course mean SBR.

You do have to have at least one wired device in the system (Zone
Bridge or any player)but in the Squeezebox system you will need a 1 or
more WAPs or wireless routers. And if you do have more than one good
luck getting your SBC to roam between them reliably.

I'm pretty sure you can use a ZP90 just fine without a controller if
you access it from the PC GUI interface.

Agree on the display point, which is why I went with SB in the first
place. I just think the price argument is somewhat exaggerated.

Yes, you can, but that's not really what it's made for (as the SB,
too).

I just think the price argument is somewhat exaggerated.

Not so sure. In the case of comparing a one-zone-system 1:1 maybe not
so much, but Sonos really makes most sense if you view it as a
whole-house audio system and if you do that, you can go quite a bit
cheaper - plus probabyly even more user friendly in some situations -
with the SB due to the wider product range.
If you really just want a number of rooms outfitted with displayless
devices then you should really compare to the SBR. OK, the setup is more
cumbersome but you do that ONCE. At least I did and I have absolutely no
issues with my Receiver.

But you can also add a cheap kitchen radio that has it's own controls,
same for the bathroom. In a realistic scenario, if you compare to Sonos
you'll add a number off expensive S5s plus you'd need additional
controllers sice you have absolutely no UI whatsoever on any of the
Sonos devices and then probably one controller is not enough for a whole
house. OK, you can add iPods, but then you need WiFi (redundant!) again.

I still believe for a realistic setup with 4-5 zones you end up with at
least twice the cost for a Sonos system and that does even take
additional cost for a bigger NAS/Server for SBs into account.

Which doesn't change the fact that Sonos DOES do UI better than SB and
DOES do setup better, IMHO.
SBs have better functionality, though.

2010-02-18 Thread JeffHart

Is it really? An SB3 is $300 and the Sonos preamp models are $350. Add a
decent auto power on amp to the SB3 and you won't be far off the $500
price of the Sonos amplified model. The Sonos Controller at $350 is more
than the SBC at $250 but it is also a touch screen unit with proprietary
radio linking to the nearest zone player so you get tangible performance
 uplifts for the cost difference.

It's true that Sonos doesn't have anything in their product line to
compete with the cheap and frustrating, non staic IP configuring, no GUI
setup, SBR, but I'm not sure that this is a market niche that any
company should be chasing. When comparing the rest of the Squeezebox
line I really don't see where the price delta is all that dramatic.

For me the price difference was dramatic and a big factor in my choice.
Using list prices for comparison on the assumption that both are
available a comparable street price discounts the Sonos solution was
$1,135 more than the SqueezeBox setup, including the $9.99 for iPeng.
Probably add another $99 to that - for a Zone Bridge. I could
potentially wire in one of the BR100's to the router in my office, but
would be a pain.

My Squeeze set up is below in my sig field, the comparable Sonos set up
would be 1 S5 (closest thing to the Boom), a Sonos Bundle 250 (don't
need the ZP120, but the bundle is $48 cheaper than buying 2 ZP90's and a
controller) and three ZP90's for a total list of $2,445.

So yes - my price did include the SBR's which I found to be
inexpensive, easy to setup and un-intrusive rather than cheap and
frustrating.

List price for my setup is $1,310.

Already have a server that I was using for media, so that's a wash.

Real world numbers, real world economics, not based on the assumption
that existing products (SBR) are excluded. If the SBR isn't for you,
than the pricing delta would only be $335 less than the Sonos. In my
case I already had stereo kit everywhere except the kitchen, where I've
put the Boom, so amplified players were undesirable.

What Muele and Erland describe is pretty much how I use The Synchronizer
plugin. I have several sync groups or zones defined, with a given player
designated as the 'master' of each. Players can be in more than one sync
group, which is especially useful for my Boom, which divides its time
between the upstairs bedroom and the patio. Were there other features
you had in mind, or are there gaps in The Synchronizer feature set that
I'm overlooking, other than the obvious part about it being a plugin
rather than built-in?

2010-02-18 Thread Phil Leigh

Just going back to the sync issue for a second, I think life would be a
lot easier if the paradigm of a sync Master and sync Slaves could be
adopted.

{starting from all boxes un-synced}
1) choose your sync master
2) on the other boxes, you always have 3 choices - no sync, sync slave,
new sync master (ie it takes over, rather like the master browser on a
LAN). By default, if a new sync master is appointed, the old master
becomes a sync slave of the new master.

None of this from/to nonsense.

Of course if you want to have multiple masters with their own discrete
slaves, a true Zone system (with join/leave) is required.

[slim] Can't log on to Sirius online account

2010-02-18 Thread satkinsn

All -

I *think* this is a different (and smaller) issue than the ongoing
Sirius/Slacker thread.

I was a SiriusXM customer for the last year or so, both by sat. and
online. Everything worked flawlessly.

I briefly cancelled at the end of January, and yesterday renewed both.

I can log onto Sirius's site for online listening. I can use 'Pulsar'
to access SXM online.

But I can't get the Squeezebox app to verify me - it tells me I must
have a premium account, which I have.

Thoughts?

I'd agree, that would be easy if that was how it worked...

But that isn't how it works. To get to this state all I did was create
the three sync sets.

Taking the Upstairs set as an example, the dropdown lists are as
follows:

Kitchen - Unsyncronized or master, Office, Radio
Office - Unsyncronized or master, Kitchen, Radio
Internet Radio - Unsyncronized or master, Kitchen, Office

I honestly don't know what I am supposed to set to get the various
players into the right sync sets. I expect I can work it out by
experimentation, but it is far from obvious (to me) without said
experimentation.

new Squeeze Radio owner here.

It seems like the Listen to Activity will only restore a power from

The center key as well as the enter key does not allow you to progress
through the menus you have to hit right. [as least by default]

It would be great if they included in the addition commands to add a
thumbs up/thumbs down for Pandora(I'm a junkie).

So glad it's supported on my harmony definitely helped my
apprehension about it being remote-less.

Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience

2010-02-18 Thread maggior

I haven't heard of the synchonrization plugin before...I'll have to
check it out.

I like the ideas presented here. What I would also like to see is a
sort of follow me feature. This is more of a playlist transfer
feature, but it could use sync functionality to make it work.

On weekends I quite often find myself listening to music in one room
(kitchen maybe) and move into another room (living room) for a while.
My wife might come in and kick me out because she wants to watch TV, so
I'll go into the family room maybe.

What I do now is chose my destination player, sync it to the currently
playing player, go back to the original player and unsync it. Now music
is playing at my new destination and not in the old location.

It would be nice to accomplish this with a single click or a smaller
number of clicks.

You are right about the plugins but wrong about the default interface.

The problem here is that the default interface DOES have the feature
yet it sucks so much that people simply don't know how to use it (with
more than two players, at least).

So you need to know that there are plugins to work around that.

I think it's a good idea to think which of these features would make a
good addition to the core to fix the base feature.

AFAIK, this is only fragile with windows wireless clients, and is in an
issue in the ms wireless stack. Shouldn't be any kind of issue with
SBs.
If you're using the same device for a DHCP server and a DNS proxy (the
normal case with home firewalls) you get the advantage that reserved
DHCP addresses are returned to DNS queries (so you can use sb1 rather
than 10.3.2.64).

That would be why.

The SB1 and SB2 look like like $10 clock radios. (Personally, I like
the look, but, that's me...)

The SB3/SBClassic (the name changed at some point, and the logo changed
from SlimDevices to Logitech, but the hardware is the same) look
fancier, more like a table-top picture frame, tilted back a bit, much
like a picture frame as well.

The SB3/SBClassic exists in a few colors: black, white and silver as I
recall, though I think it eventually trimmed down to black only. It
looks similar to a Touch, but the display is the same as an SB2 (VFD,
not LCD). The wiki page shows a straight-on view of the SB3/Classic in
the top right corner. You can't see the slope of the display, but it
really is there.. the Logitech image shows that better.

2010-02-18 Thread andynormancx

The fragility that I'm talking about has little to do with MSFT's
network stack and everything to do with the typically lousy DHCP
implementation on consumer level routers. I'd also not recommend using
address reservation on many consumer routers, the ones I auditioned last
year all had big problems in that area.

Either use a real DHCP server or go to fully static addresses for
devices you really want to have unchanging IP addresses.

Re: [slim] Assigning fixed IP addresses to RADIO etc (NOT THE COMPUTER)

I had quite a few problems running dynamic addressing with my
Squeezeboxes plus laptop, desktop, printer. I think it was related to
the consumer router DHCP implementation that andynormancx talked
about. Currently everything but my Laptop and my Radio are using true
static addresses. My router doesn't support reserved addresses. I
haven't spent the time to figure out how to set my radio to static
addressing... I imagine I could use the trick to turn-off DHCP on my
router and see if the right dialog comes up when I try to connect, or I
recall there's a way to configure it by logging in with SSH and
modifying config file(s).

Wow, not much love for Squeezebox in that discussion! One guy posted he
likes SB and had his post knocked down to a -11 rating. Don your flame
retardant clothing if you plan on posting a repsonse.

Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience

2010-02-18 Thread Kuben72

I have used Eric Koldingers Synchronizer plugin for some time now. And
it works and makes synchronizing usable. But for now it has a small
problem: It turns on every player there is in the system, regardless of
the player is not in the chosen sync-zone.
And the interface in SBS is hideous (Sorry Eric) but it works and
without it I wouldn't know how to handle my 4 players.

 would of course get lost.

Personally, I'm looking most for Quick Reference, so anytime you need
it tested just for that ;-)

Normally, I just refresh the webUI page and the errant device appears
in the dropdown..

Of course, you can stop/restart SBS without rebooting.

Re: [slim] Is there a way...

2010-02-18 Thread snarlydwarf

SBS doesn't scan for players.

A new player on the network sends out a broadcast packet looking for
servers.

Any and all servers respond.

The player will then connect to the server (and remember the server it
connected to...).

If you're talking about the webui, it may get a bit confused depending
on your browser so a page reload will force it to grab the current list
of attached players, but it shouldn't need that. Sometimes browsers get
confused, though.

But again, the server does NOT scan looking for players: the players
look for a server.

Turn on remote login in the advanced settings and have a look, must be

Andrew,

It actually had nothing to do with Vortexbox. Infact, I love the
concept. It was my lack of linux skills that was the hurdle. I
couldn't get any pci card (I also tried an Echo Audio card) to be seen
by Vortexbox.

Any suggestions would be helpful as I really would love to use it.

We you say Seen did it show up on the list of audio cards when you
used the VortexBox Player GUI.

The VortexBox Player GUI should list all the cards in the system. You
can then select what card or cards to use the VortexBox Player.

[slim] 7.4.2 and SB1 not playing flac

2010-02-18 Thread Rockin

I have recently upgraded to 7.4.2 on a Ubuntu 9.10 system from some
version that used to be called SlimServer but don't recall the exact
version. I have a SB1 and SB2. SB2 has no problems playing flac files
since it has native support. The SB1 reports: Problem: Cant open file
for: any flac or ogg. It plays MP3's fine though. I thought SB1 has
native ogg support but may be mistaken. I believe the old server
software used to convert flac to ogg but I don't see any settings like
that under the new server software. Is there any? Could it be missing
some other needed software. Lame and Vorbis-tools are installed.

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-02-18 Thread jdoering

I initially thought I was completely disinterested in the iPad. While I
love my iPhone; I'm skeptical about such a closed platform for anything
that starts approaching a laptop replacement.

But after using my iPhone with iPeng and also as a remote for my Tivo
HD (I hate needing to aim line-of-sight IR) I realized that I'd probably
love an iPad as a sort of super-smart universal remote. Yeah I know
there are a bunch of devices in that category (Harmony, etc) but this
one would do more (real web browsing, etc in a pinch) and run
best-of-breed options like iPeng. Now all I need is someone to come out
with a good option for Wifi-to-IR conversion at a reasonable price with
a great iPhone app to go alon. I see that a few options exist but I
don't know if they meet this criteria.

Back to the point. One thing that would be good for the use case I'm
imagining would be quick switching between such remote apps. I don't
know if the iPhone/iPad development platform allows this but for me it
would be ideal to do it with hotlinks between apps rather than having to
exit to the main app screen and pick there (requiring me to keep them
sorted carefully for the right grouping, etc).
