most critical judge, but I have found the sound quality very good,

My guess is that the long-term plan is to make all listings paid, with
some possible exceptions for non-profits. But that probably will not
happen until they have built a substantial base of paid accounts. That's
only a guess, though. I have no inside knowledge.

(Settings > Server Settings > Plugins > Plugins in Material), at the

Have you upgraded squeezelite to the latest version? While I don't think
that's very likely to solve your problems, it might be worthwhile to
eliminate that possibility before proceeding. And
