The successor to softsqueeze (squeezeplay) will be coming in 7.3, so I
think Softsqueeze has essentially been End of Lifed. I don't think
there have been any fixes made in it in a while. This may account for
the instability that you see.

There was a bug fixed recently and released in 7.1 where a small gap
was introduced with LAME mp3 files. That wasn't in the order of
seconds though. Your issue sounds more serious.

The best thing would be that this didn't happen where the player
disappears from the player list because the playlist is done.
Alternatively, if I could tell it to forget the player and restart with

This sounds like a corner case that was never tested. I suspect 95% or
more users of SD products have slimserver installed, even if they use
SC a lot. And of the 5% that use SC exclusively, how many use static
IP addresses.

Playlists are saved on the disk, not the cache file.
You need to specify a directory for SC to look for playlists and you
need to save your MiP playlists in that directory. When you save a
playlist in the GUI, I'm pretty sure you can choose where to save the
file.

Click on settings on the bottom right hand corner of the SC web page.
That brings up the setting page. You will be put on the basic
settings tab. One of the settings there is Music Folder. Enter the
pathname where you are storing the playlists from the MusicIP GUI.

In addition to port 9000, you need to forward port 3483 in your router
settings. Without both of these ports forwarded from your router to
the slimserver, softsqueeze won't work.
With only port 9000 forwarded, you can only play the stream.mp3 stream.
