Shutting down squeezebox server didn't stop the music. I was thinking perhaps this is because it was coming form an internet radio stream? [slim] squeezeboxes ramdomly playing scary music at full volume
Anybody else have this happen to them tonight. The booms in my kids rooms started playing scary metal music at full volume. I would turn them off and they would in a few minutes turn back on. After a while all of them were playing either a scary metal song or some scary rap song. I couldn't figure out what was going on and I just pulled the plugs on all of them. I disabled the server and I don't think that had an impact. The squeezeboxes were connected locally...I verified that they weren't connected to mysqueezebox.com Seems like a hacker is having fun...not sure if this is a widespread thing or not. Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android
I gave up on the free Logitech squeezebox app. It was not as responsive as the other apps and just replicated the squeezebox controller interface without adding any usability or functionality. I had squeezecommander before the Logitech app was released, so I loaded the Logitech app just out of curiosity. It's been a while, but I seem to recall there was something pretty major that was missing that I couldn't do with the squeezecommander app. Though I started out with squeezecommander, I now prefer orange squeeze because it is currently under development and does everything I need. The UI is responsive and is visually appealing. Managing multiple players is easy as is setting up sync groups. There is something called OrangeSqueeze. It is actively under development. There is a stable release and an experimental release that is currently being updated regularly. I like it - it works well on both my android mp3 player (phone form factor) and on my tablets (7 inch samsung and 10 inch zoom). When you buy the app, you get access to the experimental release. I got the updated preview yesterday too. I like the larger album art on the tablet and the side pullout menus for the players and stuff. I also like the side swipe to get to the current playlist. The release notes said that there will be some configurability with the tablet views, which will be nice. I was surprised because I really thought it was the end of the line with updates...which given the state of the squeezebox would have been understandable. Regarding the comments by Pipping about making money writing apps - I always wondered about that. It boggles my mind that you pay once for an app and get free updates forever. I've been both a Spotify and Rhapsody subscriber. With these, you can only download to the device using the mobile apps. Re: [slim] Usage of online services in your family ?
We use slacker, pandora, and rhapsody. Rhapsody is the only premium service we use. On a regular basis, different squeezeboxes are streaming different content from Rhapsody. If that capability was lost, I'd drop rhapsody. 1-3 don't apply since we have a single account. 4 - Yes, it would be great to be able to track playlists and libraries on a per user basis. Ignore what's supported in LMS and Squeezebox today and instead think about how you would like it to work in the future. Do you have a need to let each family member browse their library individually ? If so, where are the music files stored ? On a central computer/NAS, on a computer/NAS per family member or on the portable device of each family member ? If you have individual libraries, do you also have a need for shared libraries which is common for multiple family members ? Do you have a need to keep track of playlists for each family member ? Do you have a need to keep track of favorites for each family member ? Do you have a need to keep track of ratings and playback statistics for each family member ? Does each family member have individual players which only one of the family members mostly use ? If so, should all players be controllable by everyone or do you want access to certain players to be restricted ? In that case why ? Does each family member have their individual remote control/smartphone to control the players or do you also have remote controls which you share between different family members ? If you have a remote control which you share between multiple family members, is it a IR-remote, smartphone, tablet or computer ? How would your dream system work to work as good as possible for usage of local music on Squeezeboxes and portable devices in your family ? Our household is myself, my wife, 2 boys (4 and 6) and 1 girl (9). It would be nice if each user could browse their library separately. That would make it easier for my kids to browse their music within the larger library. What would be cool is if each user could comprise their library themselves from the entire library, much in the way Rhapsody works. Though it would be good to do this at any level, not just an album/track level. For instance, a user should be able to from the top level say add entire library to my library, or add an entire genre to their library, or everything by an artist to their library. Same thing for remove. Our music files are all stored on a central server. They are in flac and mp3 format. Flac is for squeezebox server and mp3 is for itunes. There are ipods and andriod devices in the house. As my daughter gets older, I can see how a need will come up for having a separate music library accessable by my squeezeboxes. If we had multiple libraries, I would definitely want a common shared library as well. My kids to enjoy some of my music. My wife and I would have a lot of overlap in our libraries. For squeezeboxes in common areas (kitchen, family room), I would want seamless access to all libraries. All libraries would have to appear as one large library. If playlists, favorites, and track stats could be tracked on a per user basis, that would be awesome! The boundary should not be the individual's library. This means content can be part of multiple libraries. Yes, there are players used mostly by certain family memebers - these are the booms in each bedroom. I would not want to restrict control though. It's happened where one of my kids would come downstairs saying they want to listen to xyz while they are going to sleep. As they walk back up to their room, I'll pull out my andriod device and cue up their request for them as well as set the sleep timer on it. There are multiple smart devices in the house for control (my daughter's ipod, my ipod and my andriod devices). The controller and remote controls are regularly used too. The main shared controller is the duet controller. it is in the kitchen, so it is centrally located. My wife doesn't have a smart phone or smart device, so she uses the controller. I'm the only one that really uses an iPod or andriod device. My daughter will use her ipod in her room as a controller. We can live with the squeezebox the way it is now, but being able to create library subsets on a per-user basis would be helpful...especially as the kids get older. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98199 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It's not being transcoded. If it was, you would see something in the bit rate indicating it was transcoded. You might also see something in the file format information. Are you sure you have the bandwidth to support playing FLAC over the internet? You need to have enough bandwidth on both the server and client side. I always transcoded until I upgraded to cable from DSL. OK, I just tried it out myself. The rebranding of squeezebox to UE is pretty lame, but UE's headphones are very good and are quite respected. You can get custom shells made from molds of your ears, which is geared mostly to the professional musician. UE had great products before Logitech bought them (sound familiar). So I would be really surprised if they shutdown UE and didn't spin it off. Logitech makes a lot of computer and dock speakers under the Logitech name, so it could be that they are dumping those, not the UE branded products. The silver lining here would be UE gets spun off on its own or sold to another company and since squeezebox is now part of UE, it goes along for the ride. It could still turn into a bad situation, but no worse than it is now (essentially dead, at least no future). maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97925 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] replacing squeezebox with android
The problem is that squeezeplay has low level code (probably written in 'C') to decode FLAC and mp3 natively. That code will be processor specific. Something like OrangeSqueeze is formatting messages to send to the squeezebox server, parsing responses, and presenting it all in a nice UI. Yes, this a gross simplification, but OrangeSqueeze can do all of this using native interfaces in Andriod. The app authors can chime in and give you more detail, but that's my understanding of the situation. Back when the Revue had come out, there was a lot of discussion about getting squeezeplay to run on the Revue turning it into a squeezebox - but it wasn't a simple task (could have been an impossible one actually) and given the quick demise of the product, it wasn't worth the effort. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97918 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Most people seem content to use general purpose uPnP or DLNA devices. A friend at work told me today I need to give up on the squeezebox thing. He recently bought a Grace Radio because he wanted something generally compatable with his various uPnP devices. Why do you need a special server? he asked. I explained that general purpose doesn't really work for somebody that has a large collection and wants good sound quality, ease of library navigation, and gapless playback. He just waved his hand dismissing all of that - clearly it's not something he cares about. I suspect his feelings are pretty representative of the typical user. Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released
I've been using the preview version exclusively since it's been made available. Overall, I've found it stable and improved. A couple of things I've noticed: 1) I can't use rhapsody. I can search and navigate my rhapsody library, but when I select something to play, it doesn't do anything. 2) The problem with tapping the artist on the now playing screen and seeing nothing found is back. This works in the regular version. Also, do you have plans to add the ability to set the sleep time for a player? I miss this since I use this functionality all of the time when my kids go to bed. I think it could be added to the pop up menu for the player where you can change the player name, change synchronization, etc. Great app!! A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96660 Question: Would you buy a new Squeezebox player if it became available? - Yes , if less than $100 - Yes, if less than $200 - Yes, if less than $500 - Yes, if less than $1000 - Yes - price is no object; I just want the best sound - No - I would NOT buy another Squeezebox player I responded that I would by if it were less than $500, but that's not entirely true - I wouldn't pay over $300. The only thing I could see wanting in the future was to upgrade my Booms to something with a color or touch display - essentially a stereo radio which people have shown here via photoshop. Honestly, I don't need new hardware. What I'm more interested in is the continuing evolution of the software and capabilities. On top of that list would be a viable alternative to the now-dead MusicIP capability. To me, the value hasn't so much been in the hardware (which is great!) but in the software. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96660 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

And I love my boom in the kitchen. I wont buy anymore without a sign that logitech is going to support the line though I agree. Whether a squeezebox or a BT speaker system appeals to you depends on what your PRIMARY music source is. If you are a high school or college kid, it's likely nowadays that your primary music source is some protable device like an iPod, andriod phone, tablet, etc. For those people, the BT speaker system would best suit their needs. For the rest of us, the squeezebox is the best fit. I've actually started using BT Audio (A2DP) in my car (2012 Volvo S60) with my Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2. I was VERY surprised by the audio quality. My ears can't tell the difference between this setup and my old 80 GB iPod hard wired into the iPod interface. Both devices have mp3 made with LAME at default settings (~190kbps I think?). So even though there is reencoding of a lossy source going on, it still sounds really good...in a car environment at least. Now when I had the trial Sirius/XM subscription, that was horrible!!! To my ears, it wasn't too much better than AM radio. So the audio system in the car can be revealing. It may be that I'm just lucky that the Samsung/Volvo combo results in a high bit rate transcode. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95977 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Better Logitech products than the Squeezeboxes
erland wrote: Have you tested or do you think you would be able to hear difference between a lossless file and a 190kbps MP3 in the car environment ? Just asking to get a feeling how good your car audio environment is, because if you can't hear difference between a lossless file and a 190kbps MP3 a bluetooth solution might be good enough because there might be other components limiting the system more than the bluetooth does. I'm personally fairly sure that both MP3 and bluetooth is good enough for a lot of people, the question is just if it's good enough in a listening room setup for people that really care about audio quality. For bluetooth to replace Squeezebox in my home from an audio quality perspective, its really important that it at least doesn't result in that my FLAC files sounds like MP3's or even worse. No, I've never done a listening test in my car to see if I can tell the difference between mp3 and lossless in my car. Honestly, even in my home listening environment, I have to listen very closely to notice any difference so I'm sure I wouldn't hear it in the car. In the car, it's more important to me that I have variety, not the absolute best quality. As long as I don't think wow, this sounds bad when I put the music on in the car, I'm happy. Sirius XM made me think that, so I never listened to it. What I was more concerned about in the car was the impact of compounded compressed encodings of the audio stream. In my car, I couldn't hear anything. I recall reading someplace that there is (or will be soon) a version of bluetooth that supports lossless encoding of the stream. In that case, it would be theoretically possible to be lossless from the source right to the DAC in the player. That would be cool to have in the car, but even in the home, I'd still perfer my squeezebox at this point. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95977 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released
Glad to see some life with this app. I've been using it exclusively on my Samsung Galaxy 4.2 player (gingerbread based). I also use it from time to time on my WiFi Xoom. Compared to SqueezeCommander, OrangeSqueeze has a more fresh look and feel to it. In using it, there are a couple of things that I think would make it better: - An option to list albums in date order rather than alphabetical. - In the now playing screen, the ability to tap on the artist name and be taken to a list of albums by that artist. This currently generates an error. Same goes for the album - tapping that should bring me to a list of tracks on the album - that generates an error too. The second issue really makes it cumbersome to navigate music. A lot of times, I'll be listening to an album and decide I want to listen to more from that artist. Rather than just tap on the artist name, I have to navigate from the top level through my music library. I'm curious to see what you come up with for enhancing the tablet interface. On the right side of the screen, there's a lot of screen real estate that could be put to good use. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92330 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I am a iPeng user and there are a large number of Apple iPod products in our household. Since the iPod supported gapless playback of LAME mp3 files, I've been a strong supporter of iPods. I also own some Android devices... In response to Erland's post, I have to say that his requests would fit more in the Android world than iOS. There are 2 Andriod music player apps (PowerAmp and ProPlayer) that are under active development that support both mp3 and FLAC with gapless playback. In relation to the squeezebox ecosystem, squeezeplayer works quite well in combination with either squeeze commander or orange squeeze. iTunes never really bothered me. When you come from Sony's SonicStage, you have a pretty thick skin :-). When you move to an Android device, you break free of being tied to certain software. For syncing my android devices, I use Media Monkey - works great! For those that demand a choice of codecs with gapless playback on a platform more open than iOS, Android is an attractive choice at this point. This is especially true now that a number of non-phone Android devices are out there (Galaxy Player, Motorola Xoom, and all of the other tablets). I like both platforms and think both have good things to offer. Also, assuming we prefer the open Squeezebox products in front of the closed Sonos products, is there something we as a community could do to improve the situation ? All the premature predictions of Squeezebox end of life mentioned in a lot of threads in the forum is definitely a step in the wrong direction, but maybe there is something else we can do ? A big part of it is the lack or hardware. You have the radio and the touch - that's it!! And stores like Target aren't shoving them in peoples faces next to the Bose products. Crutchfield doesn't even feature the squeezebox in their catalog anymore - just Sonos. The best, most robust, easiest to use software isn't going to fix these issues. I'm a hardcore user and an avid music enthusiest. What matters to me isn't going to matter to 90% of the users, so satisfying my needs isn't going to bring droves of new squeezebox users into the fold. Feature-wise, I'm happy with what we have today. I love that I can easily turn my iOS and Andriod devices into portable squeezeboxes. Software stability is another story. My server stops for no apparent reason. If it doesn't stop by itself, I have to restart it periodically because of a memory leak. The only reason I'm on this version of software is Rhapsody support. The last version of 7.3 was solid as a rock, but doesn't support changes Rhapsody made in their protocol. The LMS versions scare me with all of the problems people reported along the way. Problems were always fixed super fast...not so any more. Sorry to sound like a sourpus and a negative-nancy, but I think the issues surrounding the squeezebox are beyond help from the community. The iPod will stop playing on its own and will turn itself off in time. It quickly will go into sleep mode. The connection in my car is in the storage compartment in the center console. I drop it in there and forget about it until I have to pull it out to update the music on it. The idea of installing a PC in the car with the associated wiring is an interesting geek endeavor and would certainly work. However, the iPod solution would give you equally good fidelity with a much simpler solution. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 Duet, 1 Receiver, 1 Touch, iPeng on iPod Touch, SqueezeCommander on Xoom. Re: [slim] Why not in a car?
Does the car have iPod integration? Our cars (2010 Volvo XC 70 and 2012 Volvo S60) have a usb port which can accept an iPod or a usb storage device (thumb drive, etc). The usb storage capability is much like what you've said you have in your car. The iPod integration though uses the tags and has the advantage of providing gapless playback since the iPod provides that. I had an 80 GB iPod I didn't really use any more, so I've dedicated it to my car. For my wife's car, I bought a used one on the Amazon marketplace for a little over $100. I only need to remove them to add music occasionally. It's worked out great! Getting a squeezebox to work in a car is an interesting technical challenge, but I think it's a bit of overkill. FLAC would be nice in the car, but honestly, high quality LAME mp3 files are more than sufficient. If your car supports iPod integration and you aren't fiercely anti-Apple, that would be my suggestion. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 Duet, 1 Receiver, 1 Touch, iPeng on iPod Touch, SqueezeCommander on Xoom.
