I want to get back to this project this summer with my box still unused.
Considering Vortexbox comes with Plex I find it strange that they
emphasis Musi so much, reading
https://wiki.vortexbox.org/what_is_vortexbox you would only think it
deals with music.

I have the image on a USB connected to my Tranquil server. When the
initial multi install options come up I select install 2.5 beta. When
that finishes it leaves me at a command line user@zesty:~$

If I do an exit it reboots and if I disconnect the usb stick is says
there is no bootable device.

The installation page/faq does not cover this scenario as far as I can
see. I can't see a vortexbox forum, any advice is much appreciated.

Vortexbox comes with both.
The latest version is 2.5 beta. I have yet to try it but am running 2.4
with both Plex (for Videos only) and LMS on an HP Microserver with SSD
for operating system only with storage on my QNAP via NFS.
Some work is required to configure it to use the NAS storage and to rip
CDs directly to it and also to get 7.9.2 installed but once done it runs
very well although it should be noted that 2.4 is based on an old
Fedora.
2.5 uses a more current Fedora.

Thanks Jeff! Previously when I had WHS I used the server as both
Squeezebox server and to do daily backups of a couple of household
machines on the network.

I'm unsure about setting network backup installs in parallel with using
Daphile as my OS...

That said I have not been able to copy music to the Daphile install yet.
I am still getting the same message as before though the OS is now
installed.

Tom.

Are you dropping them in "Music" ? The error seem to say you're dropping
them in "All Shares" which you cannot do

Hi Tom,

Can you explain > copying files did not work and gave an HTTP error 431 in more
detail please ?

You copy using Windows (File) Explorer NOT Internet Explorer

In Windows (File) Explorer location bar type "\\IPADDRESS" (See
Screenshot)

Daphile will not be the same but you get the idea

I tried to install it last night. I think it worked, it says it was
loading Daphile into ROM and to then access it from the ip address which
worked. Unfortunately, copying files did not work and gave an HTTP error
431 connecting to the backend. I have emailed Daphile as I could not
find a forum.

I've been using Ubuntu Server on my headless HP Microserver for some
years and am very happy with it.

A few weeks ago I did a clean install of Ubuntu Server (because I messed
up an upgrade) and it was pretty straightforward.

LMS) were to set a fixed IP address for the server, installed Webmin (so
I could access it from a Windows PC) and installed smartmontools.

Am happy to help anyone, though I am far from an expert.

Funny enough I was playing with Daphile today !

It might possilbly be a better "Fit" for you.

It installs quickly and easily and works wll enough though I wont be
changing I was looking for a distro that I can use as a dedicated
auto-ripper.

The good point for you is a pre setup SaMBa share (Windows networking)
so you can transfer your music easily from PC and Mac

I THINK Daphile uses the updates from standard LMS repo, though not sure

Looking at the Centos installer, it has an option to configure
partitioning, maybe that is the way to go, redo the install, it's quick
enough.

That said, have you played with Daphile? It does read good.

This is interesting, thank you! So the majority of my 500GB SDD would be
available for storage out of the box with that one of it's focuses. I
had a look at the Daphile FAQ, ssh not supported and sftp not mentioned,
how do you copy files to the system? Does it takes LMS updates or it a
complete fork?

This is becuase of the defualt install of Centos, my very basic
instructions were aimed at people who knew enough about Linux to get a
basic system running to their requirements.

Anyway not too much of a problem !

The defualt install has created the "/" as a 50G drive and you have used
the /media directory which is under "/"
We will need to move the music to the larger partition.

Can you post the output of "mount | grep mapper" so we can see where
the 413G partiton is mounted ? I suspect its mounted as "/home"

FYI I usually do a manual (without LVM) partitioning on install with :-

20G reserved for /
2x Memory for swap
The remaning I mount as /storage

I realize you've already started to deploy a self install, and
admittedly I only quickly browsed some of the posts since you started
this thread, so maybe it's been mentioned, but there are distro's with
LMS already to installed.

I simply install Daphile https://www.daphile.com/ for friends and family
I've turned on to the SqueezeBox system.

It's a great distro, and eliminates a lot of the pain of system setup.

Yes! Silly me I forgot to try the ip address. Stupidly I did not take
screenshot of my old LMS settings before blowing away WHS.

I guess the thing to do is to take out my one of mysqueezeboxes and
finish config and test it!

I'm pretty confused now. To clarify what I have done from the
instructions you sent.

yum -y upgrade
shutdown -r now
yum -y install perl-Time-HiRes perl-CGI perl-Digest-MD5 nfs-utils wget
wget http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nig...322.noarch.rpm
yum localinstall ./logitechmediaserver-7.9.2-0.1.1559745322.noarch.rpm
ln -s /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/Slim /usr/lib64/perl5/Slim
firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-port=9000/tcp --permanent
firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-port=3483/tcp --permanent
firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-port=3483/udp --permanent
firewall-cmd --reload
systemctl start squeezeboxserver
systemctl enable squeezeboxserver

Are you saying I should not have setup the firewall?

The instructions indicate I should now be able to access the LMS on port
9000, is this wrong?

The "4m[terminated]" is a known problem. I don't know why but all is
fine with VM's but not with physical machines

Yes Networking is not enabled by defualt, you can change this with nmtui
at the prompt.

You will need to disable the firewall (firewalld) in order to access
anything but ssh (or create rules, I have these if you need them)

You may want to disable SElinux untill you have it working, it can
sometimes get in the way.

Personally I would get the system up and running on the HDD, if all goes
well this would take less than an hour I would guess

Once all is working order the SSD and repeat with the SSD taking the
place of the HDD

On the subject of distro's I use both debian and Centos theres not much
to choose between them but I know Centos a little better

Thanks! tbh, I have no way of deciding whether to use 'Centos 7'
(https://wiki.centos.org/Download) or any other distribution. I will
take advice fomr here about what's easiest and best.

What's the point getting the current HDD working if I will blow away the
installation with a SSD install? I reckon 500GB might be a good
comprimise, not break the bank but future proof me some.

Excellent !

I know that Centos 7 will run on a D510 just in case you decide to go
that way.

I would reccommend a minimal install whichever distro you choose as the
Tranquil will probably be quite light on RAM

The SSD option would be a good idea as you have a relatively small
collection and a 250GB SSD is fairly cheap
I would suggest you use the HDD to start with to make sure everything
works OK before spending on a SSD

Good Luck

Tranquil confirmed that the processor is a 64 bit processor. They said I

That is good news - at least you know that the machine and LMS still
work.
Did you try connecting a player to it and then Deezer (etc).

7.7.5 may well be too old for some of what is available to LMS nowadays
but it may well have enough for what you want.
I'd leave it running and start playing music and if it works then move
it down one in the priority list.

I powered it up tonight.
I was able top connect to the Logitech Media Server Version: 7.7.5 -
1416570306 @ Thu Nov 27 07:38:09 CUT 2014 via port 9000.
Eventually i figured I could download the WHS connect software via port
55000 and install on Windows 10. I now have a WHS Console for what
that's worth. Via the setting there I can see it's a Atom D510 processor
as @Manul said, it's 1.66 GHz.

I have not found out yet if the T7 usb is bootable or what SDD I could
swap the HDD out with.

As Tranquil don't offer any support for this model

https://tranquilpc.kayako.com/article/2-product-support

I would suggest running this

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspberry-pi-desktop/

It's what I use on an old Shuttle.

Installing LMS is simple and so also is Squeezelite. You can aslo put
Shairport-sync and an independent Spotify-Connect on it if you wish.

You trial everthing by using Etcher to burn the image to a usb stick and
run it from the usb (use persistance and the setup will be saved).

If you find it acceptable, run the install and do a freash
configuration.

According to my web search the T7 has an Atom D510 processor which
according to Intel is 64 bit
(https://ark.intel.com/content/www/de/de/ark/products/43098/intel-atom-processor-d510-1m-cache-1-66-ghz.html).

If the T7 boots from USB, that would probably be the easiest way.

Fitting an SSD inside the HD slot shouldn't be an issue. I don't know
whether SSDs still come with an adapter frame for this purpose by
default nowadays but even if they don't these should be available
separately.

Your support is much appreciated. Great to know Deezer out of box still.
I have the music stored on external drives actually, not the T7 - I
never got around to utilising it. Upgrading to an SSD sounds spart if I
can do it afforadbly!

The internal storage of the T7 is 500GB SATA (Optional 4x USB HDD ports,
here's the 7 spec https://pasteboard.co/Ig17NQb.png), no DVD/CD. I'm
unsure about fitting a SSD in the HDD place...

and burn to dvd then boot with it in the tray. Or burn iso to USB and

If the T7 currently only has one disk I’d suggest removing it as is and
upgrading to an SSD. If it has 2 disks in Raid 1 then make sure you take
a backup first. You may not be able to recover the data from a disk that
has been raided.

Headless as in you don't own a monitor or headless as in you don't want
a monitor connected to it in daily use? If you have a monitor, I'd
second @Jeff07971's recommendation of Debian: I have experienced it as a
rock solid distribution and installation is quite straight forward – if
you can temporarily connect a monitor that is, completely headless
installation of Debian is IMHO a nightmare and far more complicated than
it should be. Unfortunately I don't know which, if any, other
distribution makes that easier.

my favourite Centos) are 64 bit

As long as you can find a decent distro I think it will make a good LMS

Great idea thanks, I had not considered that! I do have a little Linux.
I'll do some digging on the forums and see if anyone has installed Linux
on them. I built a machine and installed an early Ubuntu on it in the
