You can do it by modifying the Labels Greeting setting in Preferences

Thanks Paul and the dedicated team - it's all installed perfectly here on W10
with DropBox hosted log-files. All the country totals are correct too.

There has already been mention of the next release - now that the basics are
sorted out, can we expect some real enhancements next time around?
(and the packet filtering bug fixed, too?)

It would be good to understand the road-map, if there is one?  In my mind, the
enhancements offered do not particularly warranty a version upgrade, they're
'point upgrade' features that should have come out a long time ago. I'm really
disappointed by it - the only real benefit for me is the ability to log FT8
QSOs, the rest is superficial. Others may view it differently of course.

I do like DX4WIN for its multiple groups functionality, stability, interface,
speed and powerful searching but we're now in 2017 and people use MMVARI,
FLDIGI, WSJT-X, Clublog etc... I'm sure there is more to come. Modern day
logging software needs to interface with these tools; for a 'paid for' product
I would expect much more than what has been delivered.

I've paid and I'll stick with it because I know it. But probably not for much
longer, I feel I'm being taken for a ride here.

Re: [Dx4win] changing QSO IOTA award status by downloaded CSV file ?

2017-03-27 Thread Dave Sharred via DX4WIN

Hi Paul,
If you're ever looking at Clublog filters, and how they import/ modify Dx4win
data,  I use OQRS now as my prime means for label printing, since I have many
requests now on line, for the DX calls we have used.
When I then imprt the QSL status into DX4Win, I noticed the ARRL update reverts
to unsent.
I know this is mainly due to the clublog export adi file,  but it would be good
if there was an import option that only updated QSL status

I have a copy of the original Save file on a Pen Memory Stick.

What is the best way to move them into the new save file and still keep all
the individual logs so I can still check incoming late QSL`s against these

Should I just cut and paste the old file Save on old PC and just paste
into the new PC there by replacing the existing Save file? Or is this
going to create trouble.

Re: [Dx4win] operating CW from keyboard and keyer without unplugging

2013-01-09 Thread Dave Sharred
Not Jim, but I may have the answer: it shoudl be yes, with some caveats.

I assume that you have a good serial keying lead already ? I know nothing about
the Heathkit keyer.

the normal way is to get a jack plug Y adapter for your radio ; that is, 2
quarter inch jacks to one output that goes to the jack on teh radio.

This assumes that yuor keyer and your serial interface are keying the radio in
the same way; usually you have an open collector feed on the serial lead for PC
kleying; I think when you key you are effectively pulling down the 12V on the
radio Jack socket to ground. The heathit needs to be doing the same. If it is
relay keying, this is ok; if not,  it would have to be configured to the same
polarity anyway.

This is the same as you woudl do with any other logging software by the way; I
used to do the same with parallel interface keying with CT, to my TS930S , and
an external keyer

Hope this makes sense

Using DX4WIN, is it possible to operate CW from a keyboard with a serial port
connection between the computer and the transceiver and then parallel the
output of a keyer (Heathkit uMatic Keyer) with the cable from the serial port
in the plug that goes into the CW jack on a Kenwood TS--850?

What I am trying to accomplish is to be able to operate CW from a keyboard OR a

Ed,
I'm not Jim, but I've paralleled my keyer output and serial port
computer-generated CW for many years.  Just make sure your keyer has an
isolated output, i.e., a relay (reed or solid state) rather than keying
directly via a transistor output.

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW Support

2013-01-06 Thread Dave Sharred
I think Dicks point is a fair one; when you look in a wider context.

Some people would like the ability to upload more frequently; this is down
to personal preference. Other programs offer this.
Some people would prefer to see automatic connection (and reconnection) to
your favourite cluster, that DX4Win doesn’t support. Other programs do.
There are some bug fixes / enhancements that have been mentioned on this
reflector, too.

I am aware that there are now other programs that might look better, have
other features; and have so far stuck with DX4Win for 10 years plus. Problem
is, with no visibility of if it is being developed, others will start to
migrate away, and look at other offerings, potentially depleting our current
user base, and long term viability of this product

If you mean auto uploading after each qso then I hope you are aware of the

not like many do and upload their entire log again and again.

DX4WIN V8 was released over three years ago, with the V8.05 being released

2012-12-12 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi,

Just tried to update my main log (using DX4WIN v 8.05), with eQSL
confirmations. I can only see that I can download the entire confirmations
file (is 8900 QSO's).

When I import this (set eQSl flags); DX4WIN hangs and is not responding.

Am I doing something wrong ??

[Dx4win] DX4WIN WPX filters

2012-12-09 Thread Dave Sharred
This is an idle curiosity note/observation

There are many WPX awards; but the filter just seems to collect band mixed
totals. This is good for tracking band awards and mode awards, but not for
Continental awards.

Am is missing something, or is there another way to do this ?

Re: [Dx4win] QSO Window Data

2012-08-02 Thread Dave Sharred
Am not at home at teh mment (on in front of DX4WIN); but a few points come to
mind:

Are the awards set up? You need to go into the reports menu to do this; but you
might also have to go into preferences too, to enable bands/modes. In reports,
you would need to set up tabs for all awards you are interested in.

In teh regular QSO window, do you show QSL data (Y for confimed QSO's);   and
if you wanted LOTW info, you need to import confirmations from LOTW too.  This
is detailed in teh help menu; there may be more on Jims web site (AD1C.COM)

I am beginning to use the DX4WIN QSO window for more than just entering QSO
info as I have done for many years.

Am trying to make better use of the info available in the bottom row of QSO
window. Specifically, the fields indicating awards (DXCC, WAZ, etc).

Mine are all blank.

How do those get populated, and caused to appear with info in the QSO
window?

I presume info that is compiled in the DX4WIN data base should automatically
appear (such as identifying that a particular entity has been worked, and
has been recorded as worked on LOTW).

Also, what is the meaning of the fields worked cutoff and mailed cutoff
in the preferences window?

I am using Version 8.05

I am sure these questions have been asked before, but I can not find any
tutorial info anywhere. My apology to those who find this a dumb question.

Re: [Dx4win] WPX confirmation

2012-06-30 Thread Dave Sharred
Karl

I used the example in my log of 7O6T; which is a new country, and hence of
course a new prefix

Since this is LOTW confirmed, the country window would show as a C.
However, the way DX4WIN is, by default; you would need a real QSL to make
the WPX window change to a C; so it shows as a W still.

With LOTW being enabled for WPX; I guess you would need to go to Reports,
Awards, select the WPX flag, and change the Confirmation to allow LOTW,
which I think is the new arrangement

Don't chase prefixes; too many of them !!

Hi folks,

I've run into something that I'm confused by (there are a lot of those but
this one is specific!!!) - when I have confirmed a new prefix (either by
LOTW or via a QSL card), the WPX box which indicates the band and mode of
the contact remains filled with a W. When I look at the Country box,
the Zone box, and the State box (when appropriate) they change to C,
indicating the contact is confirmed.

I've just recently started paying attention to the prefixes, so it could be
that this has been the case for a long time but I haven't noticed it. It
does seem strange, however, that one award would work differently than the
other three.

Anybody have any info on this???

Thanks, in advance,

Re: [Dx4win] Splitting a file

2012-05-22 Thread Dave Sharred
Alan

This is quite simple; but I would recommend that you filter your log, and
set the call signs up as groups, assuming you are talking about USA calls
only??

1) ensure that you have a call sign attached to all of your logs. I would
hope that ion the Group filed in your QSO window, you see Group 1? If not
filter (F8) on whatever number is there, and change it to 1 . It may be
defaulted in preferences to zero.
2) Next assign a group name to Group 1, by using the Filter Edit Group
Names. Use your older call. Also , add a 2nd Group name with your new
call, and make it appear as 002. Close this window.
3) next filter your QSO's for the range with your new call, say 01/01/2012,
only you know that.
4) Then, select the QSO tab, and edit Multiple QSOs operations, and set
Group number, Change all to 002

Then you should be able to filter your log for groups 001 and 002 for your
upload.

I have to dash, I have somewhere to go, but hope that this helps

Now I'd like to upload to LoTW using both my old call sign and my new one.
Is there a way for me to split the data file so I can upload the QSO's from
my 2 call signs separately? Can I edit an ADIF file and do it that way?
Sorry is this

As it is now, I need to mark a different QSL method for the /1 QSOs and

Well, not a big deal, but would appreciate choise of different label

A couple of years ago, I started putting (SK) after a QSL manager's callsign
if that manager had passed away, but there was no further QSL information
available. If the DX station asked for QSLs direct, then the manager was
removed completely. By putting the (SK) in there, it it supposed to give the
user at least some sort of lead if they want to try to track down the logs
to confirm and old QSO. The (SK) also prevents the manager's mailing
address from going into the database.

I have recently run into a different case, where the manager may not have
passed away, but the callsign either expired or was cancelled for some
reason. I don't know how to indicate this in the QSL manager database. The
mailing address might still be good, but the manager is no longer a ham.
Any suggestions as to what I should do with these?

[Dx4win] Program ID info

2011-08-15 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Michael

Some while ago, I commented that Clublog doesn't pick up on my Program type;
even though eQSL and I think LOTW does.

I was spurred on into looking at this; following comments about the Program
stats on the Clublog page; and I noticed that ClubLog does not pick up on
this 44% of the time (big percentage !!)

I think I know the answer. Seems like PROGRAMID and PROGRAMVERSION are
only available in ADIF 2;and I wonder how many other logging programs
are still using ADIF 1, which is much simpler. I now suspect DX4WIN does;
having looked at the ADIF

According to ADIF 1 spec:

Optional header information may be included before the actual data in the
file. To include optional header info, the first character of the file must
be something other than . Any amount of header info of any value except
eoh may be included. The header info must be terminated with eoh. Any
number of characters of any value except may follow eoh. The first
after eoh is the start of the first field of the first data record in the
file. Here is an example:

this data was exported using WF1B RTTY version 9, conforming to ADIF
standard specification version 9.99eoh

In the case of DX4WIN; the header is:

DX4WIN ADIF Export V1.0 eoh

Is it possible to determine characteristics of the first line ; to improve
the coverage of this report ?? Have to say that I can't imagine many more
logging program variants that may still be using ADIF 1; looking at the
number of programs used !

I have cross-posted this to the DX4WIN reflector; I would suggest that
listing the most popular software is a good market survey initiative; maybe
Paul would like to consider moving to ADIF 2 when he sees that DX4WIN is not
listed here: http://www.clublog.org/software.php

Re: [Dx4win] Tracking awards

2011-08-01 Thread Dave Sharred
Alan,

Jim replied to most of your note, so don't need to repeat that.

As regards conventions, the first thing I would check if you have so many
DXCC's is - how many of these countries is uploaded to ARRL LOTW - that will
minimise what needs to be checked at a convention.

Then, I usually download and fill out the proper ARRL DXCC application form
from their web site; since you need to fill in sheet 1 anyway. I then only
complete handwritten details for those not submitted through LOTW.

I submit at conventions usually once a year

I am preparing a DXCC submission to be made at an ARRL Convention. I
presently have 284 countries confirmed on my ARRL DXCC Awards Credits
Listing. But none of these confirmations are shown in my DX4WIN program.

When I use F5 to fully open my main logging window there are three rows
(mixed, band, mode) and nine columns for various awards on the very bottom
of the window. All my boxes in this part of the window are blank with two
dashes (--).

Also my DX4WIN DXCC Summary report shows only dots in the checked column.

Do I have to manually make 284 entries to show these countries credited by
the ARRL DXCC desk to be checked in DX4WIN? Or is there a simpler way to do
this? The ARRL DXCC credits list does not show the call for the credit I
received. I suppose I could just use any call for that particular country
and not the exact one I had submitted.

Also is there an easy way to prepare a list of cards I will be submitting at
the convention for my DXCC endorsements (i.e. countries/bands/modes not yet
credited on my ARRL DXCC credits list) once I update DX4WIN to show my
countries/bands/modes already confirmed?

Re: [Dx4win] Search Engine

Once in the needed listing; you can clearly see which countries are worked
only (W=worked; L=Labelled; M=Mailed)

In that report, if you double click on the entity/ band or mode, all QSO's
with that country are listed, so you know who you have to target !!

Your question is an easy one to answer Alan:

In Excel, Highlight the column you are interested in.
Do a RH Mouseclick on the column, select Format Cells
Select Custom ; you will see General showing as selected in the first item
on the list
Just over type this with ; and the job is done !

I don't have a solution to your problem but I see Jim AD1C replied and if he
can't figure it out no one can.
But I do have a question for you concerning Excel. At times I download a
DX4WIN report, such as DXCC or IOTA, to an Excel spreadsheet by right
clicking on the report and clicking WRITE TO FILE. This works FB for me
except how do you get leading zeros to appear in the time column. Example, I
worked someone at 0005 GMT but only a 5 shows up, 0045 GMT becomes 45 and
0655 becomes 655. If there are four digits in the time such as 1745 GMT then
the 1745 shows up FB. I am using Office 2007 ver. of MS Excel. If I remember
right I could easily add leading zeros OK when I used Office ver. 2003 but
can't figure it out for ver. 2007.
I have a suspicion that maybe the way some of your dates are seen by Excel
may be your problem. Also be sure you don't need to lengthen the width of
the date column on the Excel spreadsheet. If it is not wide enough you will
see instead of the date. You might stretch it open so the date will
fully fit in the column but when you close Excel maybe it doesn't save the
change? Good luck!

Hello,
I am new to DX4win and am trying to import a large chunk of my logs that are
in an excel spreadsheet format. I followed all the steps for the filter and
it took all 13,000 + QSOs but about 830 of them had a blank date field. I
cannot see anything different about the date for those fields.

I also tried first converting the logs to ADIF but have been unsuccessful in
my attempts at formula manipulation. A few examples on the web proved
frustrating as they expected custom macros.

 Any ideas?

Thanks,

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW questions

2011-01-01 Thread Dave Sharred
I too am confused about the notfound file.

I have just done a test; if you import an ADIF twice (in mycase, I did just
that; in practice, if someone uploads a QSO with me twice in LOTW) the 2nd
QSO then is summarised in the dialogue box as x duplicates, and is
included in the notfound file

I think that this is confusing; notfound should be just that; or the record
has a duplicate marked against it.

The other category in the notfound report is where the QSO details have been
changed by an LOTW user - typical example is the US State is different on
the QSL card to that on the US operators upload file. Again, I can have no
influence on this !

 Questions/problems
 1. First, I wish this information popup could be saved or printed for
 reference.

 2. How can I have 42 confirmed QSO's not found in the log?

 3. Seems the C:\dx4w801\report1.not found (which opens with Notepad)
shows the QSO's that WERE confirmed, not the ones that were NOT
confirmed. Copied and pasted the file into Excel and it shows 8054
records. I assume some of these records are QSO's from day one to
present which were not previously downloaded?

 4. How are the 39 QSO's marked with conflicting information using data
from imported QSO's? I tried error/lotw both in the Notes for this
QSO/Call with no results. What are the implications?

 5. In the past I have uploaded the log, waited a little while then
downloaded/imported the resulting file. LOTW shows I have 94,398 QSL
 records.
When I do a search for LOTW confirmations in my log I show 90,715.
 Why the difference?

I am actually using Ver 8.04.
 I am confused

Re: [Dx4win] Award credit

2010-10-18 Thread Dave Sharred
HI Dennis

I know I replied off group; but I have found something strange on this.

I created a new log, for this test.

I entered a QSO with F5VHY on 20m, for today; then checked the Reports tab,
and looked at DXCC Summary - I have France worked of course.

I changed the QSO date to 01/01/1983, just to better the date that you gave;
and did the same again - I lost my credit for working France! I checked the
dates; and you are right- anything before 1st June produces no credits; 2nd
June is fine !!

I then entered a QSL Y for our imaginary QSO - Voila, as we say; the QSO
is shown as confirmed !!

This behaviour holds true for 1970's QSO's too; I cannot think that this is
intended behaviour !!!

But I found a workaround too Dennis - fill in the QSL date; even for a
non-QSLled contact; all is well again !!

Does anyone know if this has been reported before??

(I am running DX4WIN 8.04)

if I load the log into v4.05 all the award credits appear.

I tried a test with setting up a new log on v7.05 and just entering one QSO.
With a current date, the DXCC credit appears. But if I then progressively
change the date back to 1983, the credit disappears when it goes back beyond
1/6/83. Same on v6 and v5 but OK on v4.

Anyone else come across this problem?

Re: [Dx4win] Award credit - Found the problem !!!!

2010-10-18 Thread Dave Sharred
Go into Setup Parameters; Personal; you need to set Worked cutoff and
Mailed cutoff to Zero !!

 Worked Cutoff
QSOs worked longer ago than the number of days specified will be marked as
'not worked'. Used to ignore QSOs that are not likely to be ever confirmed
because they took place too long ago. The DX Spots Window for example will
show the colors as if this QSO did not exist. A value of zero is used to
ignore the CutOff and view all QSOs as 'worked' regardless how long ago the
QSO took place.

 Mailed Cutoff
Similar as Worked Cutoff, but the QSL date is used instead of the QSO date.
QSOs for which a card has been sent longer ago than the number of days
specified will be treated as if a card was never sent. This can be used in
reports and summary windows and when marking additional QSOs for QSLing. A
value of zero is used to ignore the CutOff and view all QSLs that were
mailed as 'mailed' regardless how long ago the mailing took place.

Mine was set to 1; bet yours was too Dennis!

By example, PJ5/AA4NC was on 80m this am (3510 I think); who showed in
yellow; though I have already worked him on CW

PJ2T is now on 10101 ; and shows in yellow - new band countries normally
show in red as stud; and I can see some new band slots in red for non-PJ)

I couldn't get my new entities to show in Club Log (FWIW !!); and had to
edit my ADIF for it to work. Jim has used assignments from 600 I think;

It looks like the callsign mapping does not consider the start date of the

Well Jo, I did wonder when it failed , from your 1st note! Kostas was referring

Does it only fail when you TX; in which case it could be RF that is causing the

Maybe ferrites or decoupling capacitors?

The other thing I have seen is failure when the PC is idle for a long time;
parts of your PC may go to sleep when not in use; if you think it could be this
then you would need to check your power save options. This happened on my

IN the past (XP, older PC, earlier DX4Win) I also concluded that the driver
was not installed correctly on a newly booted PC.

I still see this sometimes on my new WIN 7 laptop. I will install the driver
at start up, which I think will provide the answer; later today.

(BTW - I am using MicroHam USBII as my rig interface)

Re: [Dx4win] Tracking IOTA and RDA

2010-08-29 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Mel

I understand your problem with this; but I don't see a proper solution. I
can only speak from the IOTA perspective (Since I have IOTA awards, but not
RDA), there can only be 3 answers to my mind:

1 - RSGB/IOTA share info with ARRL LOTW or eQSL - not very likely
2 - Paul modifies the Log window to allow for at least 2 additional fields
for IOTA/RDA. Could be done, but I would have thought compared to LOTW or
eQSL, this is for a minority case - there are only a few years of IOTA
contests only that are available; which is not very comprehensive. I cannot
speak for RDA, but that may not cover many logs too. In any case; can you
download matches from the IOTA web site for affecting flags; or from the RDA
web site? I suspect not. I would suspect it is not worth the effort from
Paul to modify the code.
3 - Get a real QSL card from the op. I guess you are not so interested in
that, since you are happy with the on line confirmation; and do not in
general need the card for any other award
4 - You should modify your log, by selecting the QSL window as confirmed,
with a note in the log IOTA Web site confirmation

I think 4) is your best course of action?

Hi all,

I will try to explain my self a little bit better.

If I have a QSL card and mark the contact as either submitted (S) or checked
(C) in the award box, it turns up in the listing as S or *, respectively.
However, if the contact is just confirmed via the contest and no cards are
available the program just ignores the settings in the Award box. So a
contact that I have made during the IOTA contest and not have had a QSL-card
from will turn up as W or M if this was the only contact or if neither of
the other contacts with that island have been confirmed with a card. If I
have worked another station from this Island and got a card there will be a
C for confirmed in the listing. It seems like QSL status overrules Award
status.

This makes it difficult to track awards like IOTA and RDA where contacts
made during the contests are accepted.

Re: [Dx4win] Russian portables

2010-08-25 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Jim; Just tried this;
with your first filter potential errors could be(all showing as EU Russia):
UN9/UA1AET June 1992
UA3DPX/0 July 1994 (I already have a zone 18 rule in ClubLog for this)
UA4RC/9/P June 1999
UA4LU/9/P June 1999

With the UA9 filter:
EK0DAP/4K4 (May 1990) (not really sure what I would expect)
4K4/EK0AK (Oct 1990)
RN9/UZ3YWA (June 1992)
UA0FM/3 June 2003

As another aside; there are quite a few /MM stations that those filters
picked up; is there an easy way to make those all invalid??

Here's an exercise you can do to help with the country file:

First, make sure that in your QSO Preferences, set callsign searching to
substring

Now using F8, search for UA in the Prefix field, and '/' (without the
quotes) in the Callsign field.

Review the QSOs to see if the country makes sense. I.e. UA3ABC/9 which
DX4WIN says is UA really should be UA9

Now do a similar search, except put UA9 in the prefix field. Review
again, for example RW0IW/3 which DX4WIn says is UA9 really should be UA.

Please send me the call and the date of any such QSOs you find, and I can
add them to the country file. If you know the Oblast or CQ zone, that is
helpful as well (mostly applies to calls that should be in UA9).

Thanks 73 - Jim AD1C

Re: [Dx4win] Reports

2010-03-21 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Paul

Welcome to 8.03 !!

1/ In the example you give, the only report worth generating might be
Submission That report exports to a file; Std fields are date, time,
call, IOTA, Island, Freq, Mode. I just tried it; and it looks good to me !
Of course, with IOTA a print out is not necessary, since you complete your
application on line.

If you want this sort of report, be sure to go into the Awards tab when in
Reports; and make sure that bans and mode are deselected, since you don't
get mode of band awards. Then, clear any submitted flags.

The only report that shows date etc is the submitted box; this is the same
as earlier versions of DX4WIN, right ??

I hope that this helps Paul.

I have just upgraded to v 8.03 with no problem at all. My version 7.05 logs

with the reports.

1/ When I try to create a new report (IOTA for example, giving it a
different name like IOTA SUB), I seltct the fields I want, the order I want
them and so forth.
All seams to be fine.
Now, where do I find the output of that report ? If I go to Reports, the
report generator opens up, but my newly created report does not appear
there.
What I want to get is a report with Callsign, Date, Time, mode, IOTA Ref,
IOTA name and IOTA island name, with just one line per reference.
How do I achieve that ?

2/ On the already existing IOTA report, I only get the reference and the
island group name, followed by the status.
Can I change that to my liking ? If so, how and where ?

Thanks in advance

I ran across something interesting and wonder if someone can tell me why it is

I have all countries confirmed on CW, except P5.
My Countries window shows CP, Bolivia, confirmed on 15 CW.

However, if I do a DXCC-CW-Needed search in Awards window, I get P5 and also CP
listed as needed, eventhough the logbook and countries window clearly shows
CP confirmed.  If I do a Logbook search querying in CP, CW, QSL/Conf as Y...I
get a CP contact that fills the Log window.

I have 15M...along with all bands 160-10 checked in Prefs.  Also CW and SSB are
my only Modes checked.

Any ideas as to what is going on?  Or, what to check or test to see why I have
CP coming up as Needed when it is confirmed?

Re: [Dx4win] Moving to another computer

2010-02-06 Thread Dave Sharred
Carter

No-one else has commented yet; but that is not the approach I would have
taken.

Version 5.03 is a long way from where we currently are; I personally would
recommend that you upgrade to the latest version !

If you are intent on getting your logs going on 5.03 first, on your new PC;
AND you have the installation discs, I really think you should do a clean
install.

Jim, AD1C's web page www.ad1c.com gives good advice about upgrading; and I
am sure about copying settings from 1 PC to another (exporting your
preference files; and importing them on the 2nd PC). Generally, you can
copy over your log files in the save directory; and replace the DX4WIN CTY
file in that directory too, FOR THE SAME VERSION OF THE PROGRAMME. If you
change versions; do an export from the older level; and use the correct
import filter in the newer version!

The CW issue you mentioned - you might need to look at your CW setup on your
new PC anyway; I bet you had LPT or COM port keying on you WIN98 PC, that
you won't have on your XP PC !!

Subject: [Dx4win] Moving to another computer

I have a few questions I hope someone in the group can answer...

First, I am what is referred to in the DX4win literature as a casual
DXer. grin

I have DX4win version 5.03, installed on my ham computer -- which uses
Win98SE. Wanting to at least put a toe into the 21st century, I got a
new computer with XP Pro. I DO have the 5.03 manual and my registration
number and the CD. To take the easy way out, I just copied the DX4win
folder and all of its sub directories from the old computer onto a CD
and then loaded it on to the new computer rather than using a new
install with the CD on the new computer.

1) In general, will this work?

2) It seemed to work (but the new computer is still on the bench, not
hooked up to my Omni 6 or anything else). When I launch DX4win on the
new computer, it comes up with a warning that says Could not open CW
driver. What does this refer to? Is it fatal or am I just missing some
driver that did not carry over from the old machine (or is it something
new required by now being on an XP machine)? Once I click on OK to
clear the warning message, everything else seems to be there and be OK
(or as OK as I can tell, realizing that no radios or anything else is
yet hooked up to the computer).

3) If I decide to upgrade to the latest version, how would I do that?
Can I just upgrade what I brought over from the old computer or would I
be better off trying a fresh install using the 5.03 CD on the new
computer, do the upgrade and then just worry about bringing over my
log(s) later? (only problem I see with that is that I would lose all the
upgraded CTY files, etc, that were installed on the old computer, it may
not recognize Ducie and others in the existing log).

Hope the questions make sense and thanks in advance for any help you can
provide.

Re: [Dx4win] DX Cluster connection

2010-01-24 Thread Dave Sharred
Randy

No-one has come to your Aid yet, but you might have done nothing wrong, just
not completed the process.

You found preferences; and you want to check Packet 1 tab. Assuming you
are using Internet, you use Cluster interface Type - Regular, COM port -
TCP/IP, the rest shouldn't matter.

IN DX4WIN , you should then have a packet window.

In the packet window, you see some commands, one is called Connect. When
you press this , you see a dialogue box no connection active; OK this ten
you get a screen called Select Internet Address. You will need to select
one of these, and you might have to set up an account; it sounds like you
haven't got one.

This should get you going. There are more tricks you can do, like use the
VE7CC software, but that's for another day.

Enjoy !

1. Entered Type: Regular and COM Port:TCP/IP into the Setup Parameters for
the Cluster interface in the Packet1 tab
2. Examined but not changed anything in the Packet2 and 3 tabs

According to the DX4WIN Help file, After you have configured the TNC, the
DX Spots Window is available. Available where? I can't find a menu item in
DX4WIN that would open a spotting Window.

After 30 minutes of trying different things over and over, at one point I
saw a list of WWW addresses in a new Window. I selected one but nothing

I must be missing some simple point or my system is blocking something.

[Dx4win] Upgrading DX4WIN in V8 - another step you should do !

2010-01-01 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi All

Just discovered something else that has caught me out in upgrading from 8.02
to 8.03 - IOTA database.

If you look at the help notes, and you chase IOTA, there is a database file
that you need from the IOTA web site -
http://www.rsgbiota.org/xml/fulllist.xml . This is saved in the SAVE
directory.

IN 8.02; I did this operation; and populated the island names.

In migrating to 8.03 omitted to put the file in the directory; all of the
data is then discarded in the migration process.

You could either download the file again from the IOTA website or copy it
over from the 8.02 directory, to the 8.03 directory, as I did. If you then
copy your log over, you preserve the island names.

In my case; I have been doing some additional log cleansing, so it is too
late to go back to the old version; although I could spend an evening
updating 8.03 laboriously !

Jim - could this additional step be covered in your application notes; I
think this is the best place to cover this!

Re: [Dx4win] Strange errors in ADIF export

2009-12-29 Thread Dave Sharred
Hello Isidro

I am not sure why I had the problems I reported -

I use 2 PC's; the ADIF.PMP file date is the same, which must have been in
the 8.03 download.
the DX4WIN.CTY file now uses the same version (Shack PC is ok). When I
installed 8.03; I merged the country file with Jim's instruction/method;
since I may have some additional stuff contained.
Even the TK0KP/SAN is now doing the right thing.

Someone said that the PMP file should be copied over as well as logs / the
DX4WIN.CTY. Not sure why, since I don't see any evidence of the PMP file
being modified.

Thanks for your help;

73 es HNY to all !

Hello all.

About the strange errors in ADIF export, I made the following test:

1. I added TK0KP/SAN to my log. Dx4win (v8.03) tried to assign it to
Sweden, but I writed down TK in the prefix cell (I guess Dx4win created
an exception for this call).

2. I exported part of my log (i.e. only the TK QSOs) to ADIF.

3. I reviewed the ADIF file with the Notepad and I found the TK0KP/SAN
record, which had PFX:4SAN0 (bad prefix) and DXCC:3214, as it should be
expected.

I think Dx4win is exporting correctly the unusual calls, provided they were
assigned to the proper entity. Don't you think so?

Best season greeting...

Re: [Dx4win] RE : Strange errors in ADIF export

2009-12-28 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Paul

I agree of course with everything that you say; but the /SAN is on the QSL
card

The real problem is DX4WIN correctly identifies it as Corsica in the logging
program, but it is the ADIF export file from DX4WIN that is causing the
errors.

If they were consistent, then I would know how to fix the file!

Most of the errors I reported were in this category I think...

Hi all
re TK0KP/SAN, obviously the SAN is not part of the officuial callsign,
just an addition by the op to indicate he was operating from the
Sanguinaires islands (IOTA)
DX4Win will take that SAN for Sweden, which is logical with such a SA
suffix...
Basically, the SAN should be taken off the logged callsign.

HI

Just trying to cleanse a Club Log import; but it looks like I have some
corruptions in the ADIF export from DX4WIN; as shown below.

Not sure if this is a program issue, or just a database issue. I have
cleansed my log where I can

All comments appreciated!

RM3O (from 1980) - DX4WIN showed this as EU Russia but the export was
interpretted as KYRGYZSTAN. I did notice that the zone was set
incorrectly as z17 in my log entry, so maybe this screwed up things? I
will try this again

TK0KP/SAN - is showing in DX4WIN as Corsica (=OK); but in Clublog is
showing as Sweden ! The reason appears to be that the ADIF export
assigns 284 to this QSO !

Callsign: 1A0KM/IBYO Date: 1991-12-08 09:09:00 Band: 10
QSL: No
1A0KM/IBYO is an invalid QSO under the ARRL DXCC rules. This may depend
upon the date of your QSO. Club Log is storing this QSO, but marking it
as invalid. Set your logged DXCC ID to '0' or QSL state to 'I' to
suppress future notifications.

I set this in the QSO window to I for all DXCC awards. It would appear
that this does not suppress the QSO, or set the DXCC ID to zero in the
ADIF export ?

Callsign: FR/DJ6SI Date: 1992-05-14 19:57:00 Band: 20
QSL: Yes
FR/DJ6SI is an invalid QSO under the ARRL DXCC rules. This may depend
upon the date of your QSO. Club Log is storing this QSO, but marking it
as invalid. Set your logged DXCC ID to '0' or QSL state to 'I' to

I set this in the QSO window to I for all DXCC awards. It would appear

ADIF export ?

Callsign: EX2A Date: 1993-09-21 19:09:00 Band: 30QSL: No
Your log claims BELARUS. Overriding your choice and using KYRGYZSTAN.

DX4WIN showed KYRGYZSTAN; but it looked like the zone was shown
incorrect in the log as Z16. The ADIF export then showed this correctly
as ADIF country 135

Re: [Dx4win] Strange errors in ADIF export

2009-12-28 Thread Dave Sharred
Mel

I don't think it is small errors that caused the problem I reported; it was
DX4Win log interpreting , say TK0KP/SAN as Corsica as displayed; and the
ADIF export interpreting it as the ADIF code for Sweden.

I checked it with the ADIF web page; so I understand what is screwed, but
not how it got into that state !

I am not sure of the effects of the ADIF.PMP file; I am wondering if I ended
up with a mismatch of CTY and PMP somehow; but I will zip and send the files
to Jim as soon as I can - have guests at the mo; about to eat !

It appears that ADIF has changed some of it's numerical codes in the
last couple of years. When I attempted to do a reconciliation a while
back (last couple of years) there were some entities that definitely did
not match. I did some research at the time. When I checked, the ARRL
numbers and ADIF numbers were off in a few cases. There were a couple of
codes over 500 that did not match and perhaps Palestine. The
explanation I was given at the time was that, since the ADIF numbers
were assigned first, the ADIF number was the best guess as to what the
ARRL would use since they didn't assign provisional numbers. Perhaps
ARRL/ADIF has come to an understanding in the meantime... or maybe ADIF
just changed the numbers after the fact.

Jim Reisert AD1C wrote:
I would love to see an actual example of what you mean (ARRL DOESN'T
follow the ADIF standard). I do not believe what you say is true.

I mistakenly deleted the IOTA window and I cannot get it back. Surely it is

Is it possible to make one logbook window type the default so it is not
necessary to reset it every time DX4WIN is opened?

[Dx4win] F2 Key operation not correct - V8.02

2009-10-17 Thread Dave Sharred
Blank
I saw a note earlier where someone was having problems with the F2 key
operation; just catching up on QSL chore; and I think I have found a bug
(=undesirable feature!)

In DX4Win 7.06.02 :
Preferences:
F2 Key has Mark QSO as confirmed box checked; Labels drop down set
to Y

Observed operation
Search QSO to be confirmed (F8)
Press F2, Label = Y, no QSL date set, Cnfm changes state to Y
So, correctly, DX4Win has flagged that the QSO is not confirmed, and
prepared a QSL for printing.

In DX4Win 8.02
Preferences :
F2Key has both Mark QSO as confirmed Mark for printing a Label
checked. (Set QSL date has no consequence for this issue)

Observed operation
Search QSO to be confirmed (F8)
Press F2 Key; Cnfm is set to Y immediately; and dialogue box says
QSO confirmed already, set label flag?
This operation should, and was previously automatic; it is not a repeat QSL!

Has anyone else spotted this; has it been reported yet ?

You could open those QSO's, and check what country they are assigned to.

K5D might be USA (not Desecheo); 3Y0X could be Peter 1 or Bouvet; I would
have hoped that HV0A was mapped correctly. My copy picked up HV0A correctly
for DXCC.

You may need to map these to their respective country.

There's more to this actually. While a WAZ report correctly reflects the
date limits (e.g., for the 12-17-30m bands), the Zone window does not.
I have a similar contact where the report shows blank (which is correct...I
have not worked that zone since the cutoff date) but the Zone window shows
C (which is correct as well, as I have it confirmed but before the cutoff
date).
To me this is a bit confusing, since I would like to see the awards status
of my QSOs without referring to a report. Is this considered the desired
behaviour, or is it a bug?

[Dx4win] 8.02 issues

2009-09-27 Thread Dave Sharred

Hi

Maybe I've picked up on a couple of issues, now that I am getting up to
speed with V8 !

1) For some reason, the sunrise / sunset window has been seen to disappear
on start up. I usually have this displayed as a matter of choice; when
DX4WIN starts, it is there, but after a log upload, it goes. Not always
repeatable; maybe it depends what the configuration is at the time (My latop
is not hooked up to the radio//Telnet at present; all is well, but I often
see this when I come on for sunrise, in the shack ! Shack has MicroHam
running, and a Telnet VE7CC window). I will watch this behaviour, and report
back. Meanwhile, has anyone else seen this ?

2) the Reports in the WAZ window seems to have errors. If I do a WAZ
listing for all bands, for me , most zones should be confirmed. On 17m, I
see that Z1 is M, and Z17 also. If I go into Z1 for example (double click
M); then the log calls up AL7I in my case, and I have a QSL date, a Y
flag, and Buro. How can I make this report correctly ?

I notice for 2) also, I cannot reset the awards flag

Running XP, with SP2

Re: [Dx4win] Add local reflector to list in Select Internet Address.

2009-08-30 Thread Dave Sharred
Roger,

Since I have been there and done that, the following might help even more:

If you are connecting to the cluster with just DX4WIN, and I imagine that
your preferred cluster now is via G7VJR's; then you need to add the line

cluster.cdxc.org.uk:7300 to the DX4WIN.TCP file. Then you should be able
to work out what else you would do , as you log in. Since this should be
your favourite cluster (!); this should be at the top of the list for your
convenience !

JIM - AD1C - maybe we should add the clublog cluster to the TCP file ???

If you want to use a Telnet connection, then best advice is to use the
telnet software by VE7CC. Then, in DX4WIN.TCP you should have a line , or
may need to create LOCALCC User,localhost:7300 at the top of the list.
In Telnet window, you can select your favourite cluster easily; AND make it
remember your call sign and password.

Procedure here is to open / Start the Telnet window, then in DX4WIN make the
local connection.

Can help you more off line if needed Roger

[Dx4win] DX4WIN Version 8 released

2009-08-19 Thread Dave Sharred

Hi Guys

A very real question now :-

I didn't jump in a couple of weeks ago and purchase a new license for
DX4WIN, due to other radio jobs I needed to conclude; but have the gist of
the issues found.

Would the best advice be to jump in now, or wait a while, if some of the bug
fixes are imminent ?

I manage about 10 logs BTW, so if this influences the answer, am a pretty
big user (more than 200K records)

Re: [Dx4win] prolblem with installation of 8.01

2009-08-09 Thread Dave Sharred
Not a user yet Steve of this version, but I kept the note from K8UT on
Tuesday :

I downloaded and installed DX4W801 and encountered an error message upon
launching the program:
The application failed to initialize properly (Oxc0150002). Click OK to
terminate the application
Most users will not have this problem. DX4Win801 installed properly on 2
PCs
here but failed on my Ham Shack PC. After some troubleshooting I determined
that DX4Win needed the Microsoft Visual C redistribution library, which can
be downloaded from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-

DX4Win801 is now working properly on my Ham computer.

Re: [Dx4win] DX cluster hookup?

2009-08-08 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Dennis, Jim  all;

I raised this point a while ago (again!!); and am happily hooked up top AR
Cluster, which I have configured to my home node.

I still think that this is too many key strokes and ops; and my opinion is
still that it should be automated, just like running Win Test. Here; once
set up, it can be forgotten about; it just runs in a Telnet window.

Mine is just an opinion, I am not the software writer; guess I know what I
like and what I find a bit of a drag...

Still to get round to updating to V8; been very busy, so am happy to let the
dust settle for the moment. and then jump in..

In 8.01, whatever node you select gets moved to the top of the list for
next time.

There is no way to do an automatic connect. You still have to enter
your call. Please see the section called Tips here:

Re: [Dx4win] DX cluster hookup?

2009-08-08 Thread Dave Sharred
Here Here Mel !

There are many features that if you analysed it you could do with just a
few mouse clicks; and they all add up.

- rig control / mode selection - is a nice to have in a logging programme;
but we accept that the user is not lazy for wanting it (I bet someone used
Erkki's argument 15 years ago !

- Rotator control
- entering time automatically

What about in DX4WIN operator preferences - they save you having to
configure the programme every time you use it; for your laziness!

We accept these niceties; and the same should be true of other features that
would enhance the programme!

In Win Test, which was the example I used, the choice of which cluster to
use etc is still down to the user; it is merely anther preference that he
sets up.

I think about it as operator convenience; rather than laziness. I have
enough things to do with my PC before I want to operate!

Oh for crying out loud! It's NOT a lot of work to connect. But after you
have done it many thousands of times it DOES get irritating.

Every other logging program I have used takes care of this little
detail... why can't DX4Win?

It's not something that needs to be done right now... but it is a small
detail that Paul should look at... and I suspect its somewhere on his list.

Erkki Heikkinen wrote:
 Hmmm,

It takes three clicks with the mouse to connect to your favorite

I cannot see any big human energy savings if it is done automatically.
And then it will be much more difficult to choose another cluster.

I am lazy, too, but not THAT lazy.

Paul tried to do something shortly before 8.01 was released, but ran
into a programming issue he could not solve.

If you use the VE7CC user program between DX4WIN and your cluster
node, then you don't even have to type in the callsign when connecting
DX4WIN to the cluster. Plus the VE7CC program will do auto-reconnect
if the connection is lost.

Guess I could put AR user into my start up group to eliminate 1 operation.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Version 8 Preview

2009-06-24 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Jim / Paul

I like what I see; these look like some good improvements to make. Band map
is a great feature to have ! Only yesterday; we were hearing that WT also
has been updated; so my contesting and logging suite look like some big
changes !

I understand that we do not want to start a new wish list at this time; but
there is 1 point of clarification, and 1 request I had made before:

1) - Are the new logging fields part of the ADIF spec; or stripped out for
exports ? I've no worry either way

2) - I still find logging onto clusters a bit of a drag. Could we look
forward to fields that can be preloaded with your favourite cluster node;
that you can enter your log ins and passwords automatically (Check out the
WT Telnet window, for example). With auto-reconnects etc? ! I still
maintain that this should be configurable; once set up all I should do is
call up DX4Win; and everything else is automatic !

Looking forward to the full release

 DX4WINers!

My dual monitor card went south today...and I was able to get all the
applications which were running on the second screen back on the
 Primary
screenexcept DX4WIN. I've replaced the dual monitor card with my
 old
single card, so the computer only knows about one screen...

Usually, a right click on the TaskBar ICON and then a 'Move' will do
 the
trick however, the DX4WIN ICON doesn't have a 'Move' parameter.

I believe there is an .ini setting but I've been unable to find it...

So the question is ...how do you get DX4WIN to revert back to the
 primary
 (now only) monitor?

 Any help?...

I use all 3 items that you mentioned; to be honest I never thought about it
at all !!! I don't tend to worry about it. I am not sure if LOTW confirmed
is an ADIF defined field ???

In DX4WIN, you will see that in File Preferences and the QSO tab, you can
select Card in Hand to card or uploaded in the country window you will
see the status change depending on how you have set up your preferences.

Try making a spoof log with 1 QSO, setting LOTW confirmation; and check the
ADIF expert when you change preferences ?

Clublog is only interpreting the pure ADIF file

individual contests that is as easy as using the group numbers.

 Tom,
It can be done but I think it will be hugh job to keep Everything up to
date
and accurate, easier is to upload All Contests and also import them into
Dx4win, You can give all the contests a different groupnumber What makes
 filtering much easier.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN in DEMO mode

2009-03-08 Thread Dave Sharred
To Paul, Guy Dick etc...

Like Guy said, I have only experienced the DEMO mode when I have double
clicked on the desktop item; on a slow PC. for those that have seen this
problem - ask yourselves - is your PC slow to open up ?

Actually - it's a treble click - once to select desktop item, 2nd to open
desktop item; 3rd if it didn't open, do I click again to make sure I tried
to open it ? !!

It has only happened to me on my old desktop; my shack uses a laptop that is
fast.

If this is really the cause; could the software start up behaviour be
changed Paul ?

If someone tried to open a 2nd application, where the first is recognised as
a licensed copy with a key, rather than revert to DEMO mode, could you force
it to stay in licensed user mode; in this case opening only the 1st
application, not the 2nd ?

Just an idea

Re: [Dx4win] Extracting Group Logs.

2009-03-01 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Roger

Of course I know which logs you are referring to.

If you are thinking up uploading them, I think anyway you will need to split
the log up:

 - You will need to filter by group name, and save the result for uploading
- If the files are still too big, maybe you should then filter each log by
date ?

BTW - I also have a set of logs for his home call /P, for 02/3 June 2006
for a group entry in NFD. Are they incorporated, or do you want me to send a
copy to you ?

Hi,

A very close friend, just before he became SK asked me to upload his logs to
LoTW andhandle his ongoing QSLs. There are 10 different callsigns involved
and all of them have been incorporated into a single DXL log and they are
identified by the Group Name that shows up as a number in the window.

When I try to filter them by Group, all the logs have the full 20 plus
megabytes of information.

Is there a way to extract only those log entries that relate to these ten
group numbers?

RE: [Dx4win] keyboard

2009-01-01 Thread Dave Sharred
And Cort, this was my reply to Steve:
I must have bought it over 2 years ago now Steve; and am in the main very
happy with it.

I chose it as a Bluetooth device; I realised that 27MHz was not going to
work; a lot of products (then) never stated the frequency, and just said
Wireless. I checked the FCC number on these devices; and found the
certification to be for 27MHz, so that ruled out most devices.

The MX5000 I had was rather expensive at the time (?80 I think); but I think
was a good investment. It is a plastic case ; the Keyboard has many fancy
features that I rarely use in the shack ! The mouse uses a rechargeable
battery and stand, and has good life; the keyboard uses 4 AA batteries; I
never turn it off, but a set last 9 months or more

 - At home and IOM, I never heard any noises from it whatsoever.
- At home, I have never caused it any grief, even with my 91B !
- At IOM, in a M/M environment, sometimes the keyboard had a latency build
up - it would have delayed characters as seen by the screen. This was not
too significant, everything got sent eventually. Put some people off, but
didn't worry me too much. It has never sent garbled characters, or locked
up !

The only other issue is that sometimes the keyboard unpairs itself - the
mouse never does. I don't know though if this is to do with me - often I
still use the main keyboard , unless I am doing some serious work ! So I am
not sure if it unpairs if it is not being used. It is very simple to pair
it again to the blue tooth dongle.

Great timing on the post Cort, because I am also thinking along the same
lines.

Although more expensive, I think that Bluetooth - as opposed to the 27 MHz
'wireless' - is the way to go and I have been recommended the Logitech
MX5000 wireless keyboard and mouse. Haven't made any purchase yet though,
so would be very interested to hear from others with their recommendations.

2008-12-08 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Paul

Thanks for the recent update; I have successfully completed this, as you may
have seen. I really appreciate your continued support of this product, as I
am sure many others do.

I may have missed the link, I thought there was a list to reported faults,
but could not find it. There is one issue that continually bugs me, and I
guess others:

When importing ADIF files ; it would be good if we had the option (or dare
I say default !) to set the Upload log flag.

I have 2 scenario's:
 - I have done a contest (usually with WT !); and want to import the QSO's
to my logging programme, for onward upload to LOTW, and I want my Log to
manage this. Because I have no chance to set the upload flag, I have to
manually change a lot of flags
 - I use a shack PC, and another for uploading // managing QSL's in the
house. This means that I transfer log updates from the shack to the 2nd PC,
and would want to do onwards uploads.

I understand that the reason this behaviour occurs is that the Upload field
is probably not an ADIF one; but could a prompt be made available, either in
a menu or in a pop up dialogue box ?

Kostas was not asking about support for the Ten Tec Omni; rather that DX4WIN

I hope I did understand this properly; I have quoted from Kostas below:

But maybe it's time Paul and dx4win supports omnirig, a free cat control

HELP!

I am operating from XE1 at the moment and have had a log for my operations
here set up as xe1-g3svd for the past 10 years. Today I opened up the log as
usual (it seemed) and was operating nearly all day on 6m and worked in
excess of 40 US stations. From time to time I had to close down the laptop
due to power outages or thunder storms and the restart when the problem was
over, seemed as usual. Each time I did this I clicked on SAVE in the FILE
menu. However when I decided to finally close down for the day I tried to
save the log only to get the message demo version your log cannot be
saved! No way is it a demo version, I clicked on OK hoping to go back to
the log but it just closed down and when I started it up again all today's
contacts had gone, everything up to a 20m qso I had yesterday is in the log
OK but nothing from today. Is there anywhere that these qsos could be hiding
away. In the SAVE directory I have two files xe1-g3svd.~xl and
xe1-g3svd.dxl. I have not
been able to open them and have not tried too hard as I dont want to make
matters worse. Could either of these have the information I want?

You presumably have moved your 239 records already to submitted ?

You can see this in your DXCC summary.

When you know they have been credited; I would move all to Checked in 1 go :
REPORTS // Change Award Flags // whichever DXCC you are interested in
//  Submitted  Checked.

Then, run Jim's ARRL checker from the LOTW page. if you have a few new

take you all of 20 minutes. I did this myself only 3 days ago !

[Dx4win] A strange Bug continues

It's curious that you mention lock up associated with running QRZ.com...

I never have had lock up with DX4WIN, and I don't run QRZ.com (though
thought maybe I ought to)

However; I have noticed when I fire up QRZ.COM in recent times; it often
locks up Explorer (stuck on something called googlead.; and Explorer
doesn't respond. This happened on 2 Windows XP PC's that never did this
before.

The point is - if Explorer locks up AND you are using on line QRZ.com, just
maybe DX4WIN is locking up . just like if you pull the plug on rig

Hope the comment is useful

Hi Ken,

I have been using DX4WIN you many years and found it a very stable program.

However I have had one instance of it repeatedly locking up. This was on
one particular callsign, which I can't remember now but every time I typed
in the call wamo DX4WIN was toast. In my case it was my QRZ callsign data
base that caused the problem. If I didn't have the lookup running it was
fine, if I did there was trouble.

So while your problem sounds a little different, it does raise the point
that it could be some associated activity. If have any feature running in
DX4WIN asking it to call some other database lookup etc, turn it off and see
if the problem goes away.

My thanks to all who have responded with possible
causes, questions, etc. Lotsa knowledge here, and
that's why I asked the question.

It seems unlikely that it's a key malfunction matter, as
it ONLY occurs with a W5Axx call entry ... not with a
5Axx or any combination of letters surrounding the
5 ... and not with any other number/letter combination.
It only happens with W5A. Remember, I've now entered
about 15K QSO's and this is the only problem I've seen.

I haven't connected another keyboard ... I will. The one
in use is a Logitec cordless.

Related to a key logger? I doubt it, as the computer in
question is almost never on line, and is used only for
DX4WIN. The computer's OS is XP and it has Norton
2007, Spybot and Ad-Aware software that's updated and
run once a week ... about the only time the machine's
on line. The only other on line activity is to visit the
Elecraft site for updates to my K3. The laptop that works
OK has the same OS and software ... they are almost mirror
images of each other.

I don't view the program as crashed as one respondent
termed it. The A keystroke just instantly returns me to
the open desktop and then I can restart he program normally
via the DX4WIN icon. All data is then current through the
last auto back-up no more than one minute prior to the closure.

Thank you all for your efforts ... I'll let you know what/if I find.

[Dx4win] DXCC Submission

2008-03-13 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Bob

Politely, your email isn't making too much sense.

Have you submitted QSL's to ARRL; and had them accepted for an award (your
100 DXCC you mention) ??

If so, in DX4WIN; have a look in Reports DXCC Summary select all
bands / modes l what do you see ?? Do you see your 100 countries showing as
checked ?? For whichever award it is you may have ??? (You can also use
the same reports menu to look at a full and detailed report if you want !)

If not, then it doesn't look as though you have them credited in DX4WIN

If you go on the ARRL web site (Through LOTW); do you see your countries
awarded ? If so; assuming that you have linked your current DXCC award with
LOTW, you can view on line your LOTW record; and download it.

If you go to AD1C's website :
http://dx4win.ad1c.us/

Check out the utility to compare your DX4WIN status with your DXCC/LOTW
status using Jim's utility - http://dx4win.ad1c.us/dx4wlotw.htm on this
page. Then, you can fix the errors in your log book easily !

All the DXCC /// Submission options will do is move your Confirmed
countries that have not been checked by ARRL, into submitted status.

[Dx4win] Multiple QSOs change on QSO NOTES - Group Numbers

2008-02-17 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Thor

Had chance to look at this; had some problems getting the SELECTION to work
though !!

It's OK now; I seem to have lost my filters in the main log (now fixed)

So FILTER (F8) is only a temporary filter; by pressing ESC you go back to
the full log

SELECTION looks like a filter that applies until you decide that you are
finished, and look at the whole log; right ?

I see the advantages in reporting DXCC status, say by SELECTION call sign,
too. It would meet my criteria for combining my GD logs, and for anyone else
who had travelled and wants to keep their logs integrated, but be able to
chase awards separately.

For those who are setting Groups per contest; I only see it as a way to
correlate their country score; but I would use the contest logger to do
that. I see no real advantage to assigning a group to every contests, but
that's my opinion.

Maybe by groups of contest; for instance if I wanted to see how many IOTA's
I had ever worked in IOTA contests, then that might be good to define an
IOTA CONTEST selection, same with CQWW etc...

Has anyone found a practical limit to log size in numbers of QSO's; not that
I'm there yet, but I know that the bigger the log the longer it takes to
load (and the bigger the file size!!!)

Dave,

I have more than 30 groups, operations from several dxcc countries and
multiple callsigns from within TF all in the same log file (TF4M.DXL).

When filtering by Group the F8 search option is not used, rather you use
SELECTION which you previously define to choose between the call signs.
This way, you can create a selection which covers all your operations from a
certain dxcc entity for example your GD operations and you will then have
all DX4WINs reporting available for that group.

You should import your various GD operations into your main log, each into
their separate groups. You can then open the SAME CALL window and you
will see there previous contacts with a station and the call you used to
make the QSO.

Even if you import the GD logs into your main log, they stay separate when
you start using the SELECTION feature.

Hi All;

I maybe missed the point, but I really wonder what you guys are doing to

I don't understand anyone's need really to group by year or by contest;
since you would still need to do a search operation (F8) to filter by Group.
You might as well do a search by date in that case. I use Groups in my
main log to differentiate from G3NKC and G3NKC/P, and I think I set up
GQ3NKC - so call sign variants.

For my GD contest operations, I currently hold separate logs for GD0EMG,
MD6V, and MD4K; even though I have been thinking about the merits of merging
those logs (might be nice to see a complete DXCC achievement, for instance);
but I often think these would be outweighed by the overhead when doing the
QSLling chores (when someone requests a card, I normally QSL all QSO's with
our particular contest call. I might end up selecting QSL's for all call's;
meaning I have 3 labels that would have to go on 3 cards). ON balance I
think those logs will stay separate.

Hi Bill,
I'm not sure how you allocate your group numbers. I started giving a number
to every contest, IE CQ WPX CW,2005,2006,2007 ETC and could see I would fast
run out of numbers. On a suggestion from a local user I now only have one
number for each contest and use the same number each year. Its a simple
matter to filter by year or mode as and when you require. This has reduced
my groups considerably.

Group numbers is a nice feature and I use it a lot. I just wish we were
allowed more than 254 group numbers. At my present rate I will have all 254
numbers used by CQ WPX CW this year. When that happens I will have to look
at other options to accomplish this or look at different software that will
do what I want.

[Dx4win] Saint Barthelemy Info

2007-12-20 Thread Dave Sharred
That's strange.

As reported earlier, I could create the new country; but I cannot enter the
end date for FJ in the FS mapping field - when I press the UPDATE command
in the COUNTRY window, it returns an error Command not executed!
Switching to correct page; and reverts to the FS Details tab.

I've no idea why it is doing this, or what I might be doing wrong, but the
QSO I have is coming up correctly.

Same behaviour on my 2 PC's

[Dx4win] DX4WIN problem !

2007-09-26 Thread Dave Sharred

HI

In the Window / Logbook view, I seem to have corrupted the settings - I
have lost all of the default ones that you see when you select the report

I could reconstruct them, but I could copy them over / import them if poss.
from my 2nd PC. Does anyone know how to do this ?

[Dx4win] More on DXCC submission and LOTW

2007-09-06 Thread Dave Sharred
I know that this is an old thread; I have trawled my emails and don't have
the answer though !

In May, Jim, AD1C replied to a note from Tony Lord concerning some
DX4WIN/LOTW shortfalls. I show it for completeness before I describe what I
am trying to do.
=
Hi Tony,

There is where both DX4WIN and LoTW fall short - there is no path to get
LoTW
submissions marked as submitted or checked in DX4WIN.

You will have to manually mark the 96 LoTW entities as Submitted in DX4WIN
(you
can see the award flags after hitting F5 in the QSO window enough times).
After these are checked by ARRL, then you can use the Change Award Flags
menu
to set them to Checked.

Then to make sure everything matches, download my program to compare your
DX4WIN records to LoTW:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/dx4wlotw.htm

If there are any mistakes, correct them (you can correct DX4WIN but not
LoTW).

The next time you have to submit, you will have to go through this process
again, but there should be fewer entities to worry about.
===

OK. I am running DX4WIN 6.04, by the way.

I want to convert my LOTW to DXCC credits; and understand the notes above. I
changed an entry to Submitted and even to checked; but , it is not
reflected in the scores within DX4WIN; unless the QSL box is checked. At
least this is what happens on DX4WIN 6.04 . Is there any difference with V7
???

I know that I can change the behaviour in the Preferences screen (Confirmed
QSO's); but, if I select Card or Upload; I know that I can't go
backwards, since this causes DX4WIN to write a Y in the QSL field.

I still want to keep track of real QSL's, since I still need these for other
awards. But I want the reports for DXCC to should paper QSL and LOTW
confirmations.

Am I right that there is no solution to this yet ?

[Dx4win] printing labels Alphabetically

2007-04-09 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi John

I regularly print such numbers; have to say I can't find anything though in
Preferences or Labels that changes the order; though I may have seen it
before !

Why don't you set up a print , and in the Print Preview window, see if they
in fact are alphabetic ??

BTW - For such a quantity, I often print using a range, so that if printer
cocks up (out of ink, jam, etc), then you don't have such a big job to do.

If you can't find any more help on this; I can send you my Preferences
direct; you would then have to edit back to your known set-ups.

With ease.

From the logbook, perform a search (F8); and specify the start date.

You will be asked for the end date also, so now you have a valid selection.

Then, you could either save the selection as a new DX4Win log, or do File //
Export to ADIF

The easiest way is to get the report,Report, Listingand select the
bands you are interested in.

In the DXCC matrix you now have; if you double click on an entry; the QSO is
shown in the log window ! Go find the QSL !!!

If you ever need to filter by country; then that is easy too. From the
log window; press F8 (sort); and set the conditions you want to sort for

If I receive a card (I am dealing with a buro drop of about 1000 now!); I

represents?

* Printing labels.
I get a QSL from a station whom I QSO'ed two times, but the QSL is only for
one of those two contacts. I confirm the QSL'ed contact and put both label
fields to 'yes'. Then it prints two labels: one with the confirmed and
another with the unconfirmed QSO. How do I get ALL contacts on ONE label

[Dx4win] Country names and states

Interesting that the country is shown as Hawai'i ; yet one of the states
is shown as Hawaii. But I can live with this!

When it comes to HI states; I have only ever deciphered Honolulu and Maui;
there always seems to be a lack of decent info on QSl's to determine which
state they count for (and I think for WAS, the info is supposed to be on the
card !)

AK is even worse. All I see on cards is nth line judicial district) , or
some other; and it is impossible to tie down the state (I only ever managed
to tie down KL7CYL to AK South Central; no others !

I know it's not a DX4Win database problem, but if there was a way to help us
understand this stuff.

[Dx4win] NEW COMPUTERS USB INTERFACE

2006-02-18 Thread Dave Sharred
Hello Oms

I bought the micro Ham device.

This does rig interface, CW keying, and I believe supports data modes also,
but I haven't used it yet.

It's a bit expensive, but it is well made; I bought the lead option also,
which is quite heavy duty, and a lot of care is taken to minimise RFI
(ferrites fitted as standard)

Whether it is important in DX4WIN I am not sure, but the MicroHam also has a
PTT control out. The only problem I have found in Writelog, is that if you
set PTT control in CW (useful if you want to avoid hot switching, but I
never bothered in any other program), the first character in CW sometimes
gets corrupted. I believe it is a timing problem in the MicroHam. I turned
off PTT control altogether, all is fine. Haven't checked this when using
DX4Win, but I expect the problem will be the same.

I then use Group names in my labels (73 de WH8/*; 73 de KH6/*)

Have to say, I am not sure if you tried to QSL the same station whether this
would actually print 2 names; I would hope so...

Subject: [Dx4win] How to combine 2 logs

Hi all !
Just returned from the Pacific.
I have my WH8/F6EXV and WH6/F6EXV logs as DX4win 6.04 files.
I would like to print all labels per callsign worked, regardless of
callsign used.
In other words, if I have worked the same station from the two
locations, I would like the two labels to be printed in sequence, and
show which callsign I was using (as a QSO note, printable on the labels).
I beleive I can do that with DX4Win, but not sure how !
Who can help please ?? Thanks
