It's really interesting to read the articles on your site. In QST recently
there was an article about a crystal set and a self-biased fet was used
instead of a diode and I think it was said that this gave a higher output.
It would be interesting to see how that would rank in your tests
Hi All
Just completed my K3 SN:1168 last night. Now doing the calibration I ran into
the folling problem. Everything went fine until I did get to the transmitter
gain part.
on 160 to 30 m it says ERR TXG. I puts out 1.1 to 3 watts on these bands. On
the higher bands it's ok.

Sounds like you've done the right things, but double check

HI all,
I've previously written to Mike directly, but I now see so many

not all), that I am compelled to comment to the reflector.

Bill is right.
The below prescription does indeed allow one to use the 1.8KHz filter
successfully on SSB. It is another tool in ones toolbox to help when
things get tough. It plus the other K3 QRM fighting choices can be
quite effective.
The objective here is not fidelity. Of course the

The usual problem is the PC being busy with other things! My dual core
AMD-64 processor seems to send reasonable CW from the N1MM program to
the K3, but the safer bet is to use a K1EL Winkey.

You have a timing problem due to the fact that several computational

CW process for access to the serial link between your computer and your radio.

Doug, KR2Q, presented a superb explanation of why one needn't sweat too much

One aspect that Doug leaves out, however is that of audio quality.
Signals will sound different with different filtering.
Using a 2.8 XFIL and DSP to make it 1.8 KHz, I found SSB signals to be
a bit tinny and hard sounding.
I installed a 1.8 KHz XFIL, and found the audio quality to be
improved.

What were the LO CUT and HI CUT values that produced this tinny and hard

In both my K3s, the audio sounds great and it sounds identical, whether I

Just because you've gotten away with it in the past doesn't mean you
will always get away with it. You never know what combination of

K3 is amazing in the IARU CW. I'm copying stations I know I wouldn't
have even heard on the TS-850 thanks to the K3 NB/NR.
A wish: I use CWT a lot, like sort of all the time. It would be real
nice if, when I left 20 with CWT on to check out 15, and then come back
to 20, it was still on.
G'day,

Just finished building K3 sn 1176. When I went to do the
reference oscillator calibration by zero-beating with WWV, I
found that the receiver is deaf. Even with a large antenna
connected, there is no increase in background noise, and no
signals can be heard.
When I turned the K3 off and then
Hmmm... That's how mine behaves with 2.10. CWT remains in effect unless I
change modes. It's independent of band changes.
Personally, I'd like to see mode independent of band changes too, but that's
a small irritation for me and, from what I read in the messages, a major
requirement for many

I agree Mike. CWT (like most functions, in my humble, but not popular,
opinion) should be completely independent of everything else. If CWT is
enabled, it should stay enabled until it is changed by the operator, just as
though it was controlled by a mechanical toggle switch on the front panel.
(In fact I think my program KComm,
and possibly HRD, are the only ones that do.)
WinWarbler (DXLab Suite) also supports KY for the Kenwood
and Elecraft radios that implement it.
But the K3 provides a more elegant solution to this problem.
You can send ASCII direct to the K3 using KY

Ed,
I apologize if I inferred that the Microham units were defective or
failed due to workmanship or design. The expedition lost the use of
three out of the four CW interfaces they brought, as you say, most
likely due to lightening or environmental conditions.
