You will probably get a lot of under-informed information about using N1MM
and Windows to send CW. I have been using Windows and several different 'CW'
programs to generate CW since the early 1970's and I can tell you from
experience that IT DOES WORK!! Some folks will refer to 'CW stutter'
Maybe I'm just lucky (although other data indicates otherwise!), but I
operate N1MM in contests with my N1MM keyer speed set to 25-30 wpm (usually
28 wpm) and have never detected a problem with it. I'm running Windows 7
(64-bit) on a fairly new CPU, and that probably has a lot to do with it.

The KPA500 fold back point in firmware is an SWR of 2:1 at its rated
output of 500W. (This is based on reflected power and will occur at
lower SWRs if the amp is operated above 500W) At that point it first
inserts a 3 dB input attenuator and flashes the fault LED. (This is a

Early K3s had tin plating on the connectors that supply 12 V DC to the
KPAIO3 and KPA3 modules. We discovered that in some climates the tin
plating can eventually corrode, reducing voltage to the PA module,
especially when operated at high duty cycle. This can result in an

difficulty was that it was a non-standard sized connector and the pin
numbers had different functions than usual LPT connectors.

Sounds like maybe the LPA has a problem. Try the following test;
With the bottom back cover off, radio powered up.
If you have a FLIR camera watch the 3 LPA FETs.
If not, put a finger on each and TAP (not push and hold) the XMIT
button They should start to get hot EVENLY! Takes 5 or 10

A lot depends upon your computer and what other apps you are running on
it. I have a five year old quad core Intel machine running Windows XP
and during contests both N1MM and CW Skimmer are often active. I
typically run CW speeds of 28 or 30 wpm and might get one or two minor
stutters
I have a winkeyer USB but still just use N1MM for keying. I have not had
any problems with it. I actually prefer the feel of the K3's built-in
keyer (for sending by hand), but since sending CW via CAT commands is not
supported by N1MM, the winkeyer is the only approach that allows you to
adjust
The mod may not solve everything. At C6ATA last november, one of the K3s which
had the Elecraft installed pin changes failed again. KB7Q ended up jumpering
around the pins to get back on the air for the contest. I don't know if the
pins were gold to gold or what but it was the classic ERR12V
I had this problem after #1823 came back from PJ6A. Luckily, it didn't
happen while we were there, although another K3 did show this error. Tnx
goodness we had a spare (mine).

Actually, you don't need a keying interface. The K3 does it all. And I,
too, have had no problem keying the K3 from N1MM without a Winkey.
In the Config menu, go to PTT-KEY.

I noticed that also but could not find it. Perhaps someone else will.
I became a ham (K1IGY) 13 years after that film was made. A lot of changes
since then. My new kx3 is gonna be a bit better than the BC-348 of my novice
days.
