[Elecraft] Vedr: K3 - small control panel

[Elecraft] FT5ZM QSO at QRP power
Strange thing happened on 20m two nights ago on 14.023. I was listening to all the mayhem with huge pileup on FT5ZM earlier in the evening. The DX station was still strong but around 0434Z the callers started to disappear. I decided to take the KPA500 offline and worked with a barefoot KX3. Still working split 5 up, I called the DX and sure enough he answered back with a 579 report. The other DXpeditions I have worked QRP is CY0P (Sable Island) which is only 1100 miles away and XR0ZR Juan Fernandez Is which at less than 5000 miles does not even qualify for 1000 miles per watt. Amsterdam Island is 11900 miles away and it still amazes me that a 5 watt CW signal can travel halfway around the world and be decoded by another radio amateur. They are running K3's on the other end - so a KX3 to K3 QSO. It still did not best my 500 milliwatt QSO to Chile CE2AWW which is a personal best 9500 miles per watt. Incidentally, Chilean op was also running a K3. That was a K2 to K3 QSO. So thi s my 34th better than 1000 miles per watt QSO. Re: [Elecraft] K3 to KAT500
I did some testing and on auto the KAT500 will tune (tune wrong) if I hit it with the a possibly flat topped 500 watts. When I put the KAT500 on man it goes into bypass. Then I have go to auto and hit tune on the K3, the KAT500 goes back to the saved tune setup for that frequency. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-to-KAT500-tp7583270p7583422.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 erratic Receive volume
Good morning, I deleted your response to my question earlier this month. So here I go again... I had send an email earlier this month explaining my audio problem on my K3 #5278. Here's a copy of my message: Yesterday, my K3 suddenly decided to have erratic receive audio. If I have the audio at the 9 o'clock position and start to turn it counter-clockwise to lessen the audio, the audio goes to half volume. Sometimes I turn the AF gain completely counter-clockwise and I still have audio. I then have to increase and then decrease the audio to make it work correctly. I also brought up HRD and I can watch it on the software do the same thing. It happens ONLY when I am trying to reduce the audio. I received an email back to try and do a parameter initialization. I did that according to the manual and everything reloaded correctly. However, my problem still exists. Any thoughts on the problem? Also, what happens to the K3 radios that are donated to the FT5 dxpedition? Are they put up for sale by Elecraft? Just curious, they are probably nicely furnished. Thanks again for a great product and great support! [Elecraft] OT: FS: QRP Works Ham Central Terminal
At my age, I'm not doing any hiking or major portable operation any more so I have up for sale a really neat little device that an outfit called QRP Works put out around last year's Dayton Hamvention. It's a small embedded processor based devoce called the Ham Central Terminal that will connect to a KX3 or even a K3 for that matter via the RS-232 port. It has a connector for a PS-2 keyboard and will operate the KX3 or K3 in the rig's CW, RTTY and PSK-31 modes plus display the decoded text on a scrollable multi-line, daylight readable LCD screen. It also has a built in logging feature that is supposed to hold the data for up to 1200 contacts. It will run on an internal 9 volt battery or better from an external power source for much longer operating time. Same operating voltage range as a KX3. There are some additional accessories that can be had with it as well - an RS-232 cable (1/8 stereo, right angle both ends) to connect the HCT to a KX3 and an aluminum bracket that will allow the HCT to sit on top of a KX3 when the KX3 is sitting on one of Nifty Ham Accessories Lexan stands. (I used a large rubber band to keep the KX3 from slipping off the stand which makes the HCT bracket much more stable.) Pix details are on the QRP Works website - - - http://qrpworks.weebly.com/ - - - Standard disclaimer, I have absolutely no connection or financial interest in QRP Works, I'm only a customer. The latest manual is on their website in PDF format. All together, new the HCT, Cable Bracket would cost $273 plus $15 shipping. I'm asking $225 shipped anywhere in the US. First I'll take it gets it and I'll accept PayPal (gift or add 5%) or USPS money order Contact me off the reflector please to keep the clutter down for Eric and those not interested in this. Re: [Elecraft] Proper Setup of K3 with SignaLink USB for running WSJT-X on a Mac
I guarantee you that is one problem! In addition to WSJT-X I also use MacLoggerDX (MLDX). It has a Radio tab in the preferences and I noticed that it was pointing to my /dev folder for the usbserial port and driver that it uses. I looked in that /dev folder and found that there was another - the one that the SLUSB opens up. So, I took a wild-ass guess that was what I needed and - bingo - it worked. If you use MLDX, don't use that same port name - they can't be shared. The SLUSB has one of it's own and you should see it in the /dev folder. Take a look and see if in fact there is something similar to that. If so - give it a try. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Line Out Mods
I have been messing about with this board for a while, but have not had success hooking it up the rig yet. I downloaded the schematic that Sean produced ... nice job ... and made up a board using the laser toner method described by K7QO. I did see one small issue with the board. The OUT label is actually labeled GND ... a minor oversight. Otherwise the board looks FB. Two questions about using pin 5 from the microphone header ... Is the ground from the audio out board still used? If so, where does it connect? Also, while I don't use a mic (CW only at this point), if I attach the audio out to pin 5, can I still plug in an Elecraft-wired mic without unplugging the audio out connector from the header? Thanks for any insight... Kevin KK4LSG On Mon, Jan 27, 2014 at 6:51 PM, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Sean, The circuit is simple enough to build on perfboard if you don't want to go to the trouble of making a board. If you do make boards, you might want to consider making additional board and offering them for sale. There are occasional requests for those boards. Build the version which lays the components flat on the board and attach it to the back of the Control Board. That way everything except the audio output is on the Control Board making the Control Board easy to remove for servicing - plus it fits easily when the KPA100 is installed. For the output connection, yes an unused microphone pin is an ideal place (for the Elecraft microphones, use pin 5). Use a wire that is an adequate length to allow the Control Board to be removed sufficiently that you can reach the microphone configuration header on the back of the Front Panel. You can solder the audio output wire to one of the 'computer' type jumpers that will plug right into the microphone configuration header - make certain the 'jumper' is plugged only into the side that is closest to the microphone jack. The only difference between Pauli's (SK) AF take off point and the one I used is that Pauli's is prior to the muting transistors in the K2 and my points are after the muting transistors. If you prefer that the AF not be muted during TX, then you can still attach to the back of the Control Board at the rear of CB J2 pins 1 and 2 - and is quite independent of the KDSP2 (or KAF2) option. I might add that Pauli did buy one of my boards - I asked him Why since he had a wonderful interface already, and he replied that my Fixed Audio Output board was an easy and simple solution. Good luck on getting that license. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/27/2014 6:08 PM, Sean Michael Johnston wrote: Hello All. I'm a newbie here and about to embark on building a K2. One of the many uses I have planned for the radio is to send emails over Winlink 2000 while at sea on a sailboat. I'd like to communicate with the SignaLink USB sound card through Winmor first and then eventually with a PACTOR 3 or 4 modem. I was thinking of building the fixed audio out designed by W3FPR NØSS. My plan is to fabricate a pcb using the laser printer transfer method. I have recreated NØSS's layout as a printable pdf ( https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_D41ceK5uSqM3VGa05BWXBhYkE/ edit?usp=sharing), and am thinking I'll run the line out to pin 5 of the 8-pin mic connection so I can have a single cable between the K2 and the SignaLink. My question is where is the best point in the K2 to source the AF inputs from? Re: [Elecraft] Proper Setup of K3 with SignaLink USB for running WSJT-X on a Mac
Bob, Glad to help and that your rig control is working. I had a devil of a time getting it working on my end. Exchanged several emails with G4KLA who wrote some of the install instructions. He was a big help to me. On my SLUSB I have both the Rx and Tx set at the 1:00 position, and the DLY all the way counter CCW. Those are about the same settings you have, so the SLUSB is good to go (you do have it jumpered correctly, right...? :-) I also assume you are running the K3 in DATA-A mode? When you press the Tune button in WSJT-X, does the K3's red TX light go on? I've re-jumpered my SLUSB so that I can run it with my KX3 so that's about as far as I can go on the troubleshooting. The ground is not needed on the audio output line. If there was to be one it would be connected to chassis ground, and that circuit already has a chassis ground connection. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Line Out Mods
Kevin, With the Elecraft pinout, pin 5 is defined as FUNC - which was never implemented in the K2, so that is the choice for use as an unused mic pin. Caution, there is circuitry connected to the FUNC input, so that must remain isolated - in other words, if there is a jumper from FUNC to 5 on the microphone configuration header, it must be removed. You can connect the audio out wire to the pin marked 5, and only that pin. On the ground situation, the proximity of the Control Panel Ground and the Front Panel ground is such that a direct ground connection is not necessary - at least it works that way in my K2. If I wire to the rear panel, I will run a wire for the AF as well as the ground - that also works well. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/29/2014 2:21 PM, Kevin Crossett wrote: I have been messing about with this board for a while, but have not had success hooking it up the rig yet. If you use MLDX, don't use that same port name - they can't be shared. The SLUSB has one of it's own and you should see it in the /dev folder. Take a look and see if in fact there is something similar to that. If so - give it a try. Thanks for the advice everyone. Sean. I have only made the board. I have not soldered anything to it yet, but it does look like the traces are correct. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Intermittent mic connector
Mike, It sounds like a bad solder connection somewhere. Before you dig into the K3, try the mic directly on the K3. If all is OK, then investigate the connector for the Duo to K3 cable. If it persists with the mic connected directly to the K3, then it may be a K3 problem. Right now, there are too many variables - the Duo to K3 cable, the PR781 mic connector, the DUO itself, and the K3 - all can be suspect. Re: [Elecraft] [K2} K2-100 Test and Alignment Issues
As John has pointed out, the problem can be anywhere in the KPA100 wattmeter circuit consisting of T4, C1, C95. R28, R29, D16, D17, R26, R27, U5. R24. R25, Q10, Q11, and U6. The problem was a short between the output of the two op-amps U5A and U5B that amplify and buffer the forward and reflected voltages before they go to the processor. There are two resistors on the outputs that are very close to each other and the pads were shorted so the processor saw the same voltage for forward and reflected - ergo SWR of 9.9-1. And the voltage varied with the C1 setting as the bridge went in and out of balance - ergo the varying power indication. Totally a build error. When I folded over the resistor leads, they ended up looking like they were on a single pad. I think if you look at that area you will find the problem. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Intermittent mic connector
I had this problem several months ago. It turns out the mic connector ground (both mic and PTT) goes thru a 0 ohm surface mount resistor (at one time this was a choke, I believe). I bridged this component and the problem went away. I believe the board flexes too much when the mic is plugged in, and this leads to failure of the resistor. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Line Out Mods
Hi Sean. I am looking forward to seeing the revised layout. I did something similar several months ago, but my layout skills using pcbexpress were not nearly as clean and sharp as your board. In the end, my transfer method using an clothes iron left a lot to be desired. I also wasted a lot of copper clad board working on the design. Not having an electronics background did not help the situation either. Don helped me figure out a few things I was doing wrong. Nonetheless, I continued trudging forward, and managed to learn something in the process. Since that first experience with board construction, I purchased a laminator off Amazon that works great. I have a board ready to use for a xtal test fixture from Chuck Adam's, K7QO lab notebook, but I have not had time to build it yet ... too many other projects ahead of it, including a great transmitter from GQRP that uses a similar construction technique as the xtal fixture (muppet or limerick construction depending on who is speaking). That rig is on the bench now, and as soon as I can get into the workshop, I plan to start making some solder smoke. [Elecraft] K3 Centurion Amp
Hi All, I have a K3 which I had been using with a little Emtron 800 w amp. It works fine and the QSK is just great. It keys in a conventional way by connecting a cable between the PTT jack on the K3 and the PTT jack on the Emtron amp. I can use the K3's keyed (which I do) or an external keyer attached to the K3. The other day I decided to try the K3 with my Ten Tec Centurion amp. The way it is keyed is kind of different. You run the line from your keyer to the AMP KEY IN jack and then the KEY OUT on the amp goes to the K3's straight key jack. This is the way they accomplish the time sequencing of the relays so there is no hot switching. This works and for the most part works well but is not quite as satisfactory as the Emtron. The QSK is a bit laggy and every so often there is a loud popping noise in the audio while I am sending. This happens mostly around 30 WPM. Slower speeds do not cause the popping quite so much. I run the AGC in the FAST position. I am wondering if I can change the AGC settings in the CONFIG menu to help this problem? There are so many of them, I'm unsure of which AGC setting to try changing. So, could someone who is smarter and more savvy than I am recommend what to do about this? I know that CW QRQ setting might help, but since you cannot use it in SPLIT mode, it is of little use while DX'ing. I will go back to the Emtron if I have to, but it has a very noisy blower and puts out about 300 to 400 watts less than the Centurion, so I'd rather use the Centurion if I can make it play better. All combinations work fine, and I've done the hookup like you have, but it means that you can't use the rig's internal keyer. So, I tried the standard hookup rather than Ten Tec's -- Key Out of the K3 drives PTT of the amp. This works fine, because all of these rigs have a delay in the range of 8 msec from when the Key Out signal keys the amp before RF is sent. This gives the T/R relay in the amp plenty of time to pull in, so no problem. There's a limit, though, on sending speed at which CW starts to get choppy, as those 8 msec delays are subtracted from each dit and dah. In my contesting experience, I start getting complaints at about 28 WPM, and I like to contest faster than that. The other factor is that more than once, I've had to stop in the middle of a contest because the vacuum relay in the amp was wearing out from too many cycles from QSK contesting. So -- I now do all of my high power contesting without QSK. Not ideal, and I really appreciate being able to run full QSK with the KPA500. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
