Re: [Elecraft] MCU 4.51 NB

2012-05-12 Thread Ted Bryant
Was v4.51 sent to the 4.50 testers? If so, I missed it.

The major difference I've noticed with 4.50 is that cw signals, especially
the low level ones, now seem much cleaner.

I can see how you read it differently though.

I have not noticed a change in the NB from .50 to .51

The ability to listen to two different frequencies...

We need a definition of dual watch.

As instituted in most 'I' brand radios, it is useless, IMHO, because it it
not possible to tell which signal is on which frequency.

Some 'E' brand and 'Y' brand radios allow one to hear a different frequency
in each ear (or speaker), which is really the only way to tell who's where.

I have no plans for a KX3 and have not read the manual, so I don't know how
dual watch works in that radio.

You know, it might just work. You have 2 entry windows and 2 rigs defined.
I am not home till Fri but will try it it then. Have to define 2 sets of

I had a long-term power outage here the other day and had to resort to using

Gary and others,

Yes, I momentarily saw it working okay on 6 meters when I did a brief
transmission on that band.

Unfortunately, as I don't have an antenna for 6 meters, the K3
encountered a high SWR there. And now it outputs only about 5 watts
on each band (also in CW mode) when I've dialed an output power less
than 12W. If I select a power level over 12W, so the KPA100 should
kick in, I get no output whatsoever.

So maybe I broke something now. :-(

Or the cryptic bug has manifested itself in the CW mode too.

Any ideas whether I could do a software reset of the radio?

Fingers crossed here now...

Back in my NA days (under DOS), I used the serial and then the printer port
to key the radio via a simple transistor interface.
When I switched to N1MM (under XP), I used a microHAM interface to avoid
the stuttering, and to exchange info (frequency, etc.) with the radio, as
well as send perfect CW via the built-in Winkey interface.

I understand that N1MM can key the radio directly, but can it exchange info
with the radio via the RS-232 port? I've never tried it.

In keeping with the emergency preparedness aspects of this, doesn't the net

contest-free.

(Or...could it be that the cancellation was more due to most of the net

Now, can we have FUN and make some QSO's (while we have a few sunspots)!

For example, come play in K6VVA's Locust QSO Party

No Jim, I have heard right. I hear a lot of people say that the K3 is menu
driven and therefore not easy to operate. On Eham for example, just about
every time someone suggests the K3 as a good radio to have, someone else or
multiple someones will raise that complaint about the K3. If I am in some
QSO and give my rig as the K3 someone might ask if it is hard to use with
the menus and all that.

But, you have me pegged wrong though. I am not saying it is hard to
operate. I love my K3 and I would not switch away from it for any radio
that now exists (I may switch to something yet to be built and most likely
something new and improved like an Elecraft K4 or K5 or whatever. But, the
fact is, among those who have not used a K3, this one complaint about it
versus other radios like yaesus or whatever seems to be a stickler. I agree
that it is not well founded but it does exist.

This sounds like a PL259 on one or the other end that is incorrectly dressed
and soldered. I would guess something wrong in the PL259 that attaches to the
K3. Before you throw the K3 in the drink, use a different piece of coax. All
it takes is a very small gap that does not show up on an analyzer, but is arced
across by 100 watts, or a short that makes contact when you bend it to get to
the K3, or yada, yada, yada.

Mechanical problems with coax, plugs, jumpers, cords and adapters, etc. are by

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SPLIT+2

2011-10-31 Thread Ted Bryant
You don't need a macro in N1MM, Stewart. The feature is already there.

In N1MM, type ALT+F7 and it will open a window where you enter the kHz
offset from the low end band edge. For example on 40m if a DX station says
he's listening on 7234, type ALT+F7 then type 234 in the window. Hit ENTER
and the K3's VFO B is put on 7234 and the K3 is put in the SPLIT mode.
Hitting Alt+F7 again and hitting Enter with the window empty clears the
split and puts everything back on VFO A.

Simple and efficient. No diddling with the K3's buttons. And it works for
any split, 2kHz or 200kHz, doesn't matter, just type it in.

Hi Stewart,

First, you must be configured for SO2V (single-radio, two-vfo), then in the

frequency, ie. /28450 and it will put VFO B on that frequency.

Tony,

The power level is displayed if you change the Power knob even a small
amount - just rotate he knob a little to see the current power.

The bandwidth graphic already shows the bandwidth in use. While it has
some granularity, it is still a good indicator of the DSP bandwidth.
The exact bandwidth and/or high-cut, low-cut frequencies (or
Shift/Width) are shown in the VFO B display when a change is made. I

Ted.

I suggest you stick with the contesters who almost universally use AGC
S with the K3. The AGC characteristics for the K3 are more adjustable
than for most transceivers (see the K3 menu), and those menu parameters
become more important than the AGC attack and decay times.

Hello all:

For the past several months, there are times when my Winkey won't key my K3.
At first, it was after I'd change from SSB to CW. The WK sidetone is still
audible, but the rig won't key. Lately, I've had it quit in the middle of a
QSO as I'm sending. This morning, it happened when I tried to reply about
midway through the QSO. It seems to be happening with more frequency.

On Monday night, I did perform a reset/restore of the K3 configuration.

I've been able to get things going again by disconnecting the RCA end (K3 to
WK cable) from the back of the WK and shorting out the tip/ground. I can
then plug it back into the WK and continue. Also, it happens even with only
5 watts output.

I realize this is a odd issue, but hope someone may have had a similar
experience or can offer some tips for diagnosing the problem.

seem to function. The 2.7Khz works fine as does the 200hz the 500hz seems
dead any thoughts would be helpful. Yes they were installed properly RC

Re: [Elecraft] Split operation - display of Transmit frequency on keydown

2015-02-18 Thread Ted Bryant
Instead of flashing the Delta-F LED that is on the far left of the radio,
would it not be more effective to flash the SPLT indicator, TX indicator
and arrow in the display just like the TX flashes when in test mode?
After all, this is where your attention is usually focused. To be most
effective, do not make the flashing optional.

yes, I know about the bias issue. Again, they all sound good on a different

In playing with Bob N6TV's suggested settings, I've discovered that on CW,
neither the Shift->LO Cut nor the Width->HI Cut controls change functions
when tapped. They appear fixed at SHIFT and WIDTH. Tapping them merely

Re: [Elecraft] a bit OT N1MM not following mode

2016-08-23 Thread Ted Bryant
Ed,
I never saw your response to Rich VE3KI's questions on the N1MM group
regarding N1MM tracking the K3's frequency. Establishing whether the radio
and logging software are communicating properly is basic to solving your
dilemma.

Here are Rich's questions:
"Is rig control working, i.e. when you change frequency on the radio does
the frequency in the program (title bar of the Entry window, top of the
Bandmap window) follow the radio? If you change frequency in the program
(Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn or the Band Panel buttons to change bands, or type a
frequency in kHz into the Entry window and press Enter) does the frequency
in the radio follow the program?

73,
Rich VE3KI"

I sent the to the N1MM plus group and they seem to think it a setting in my
K3

What's happening here is when I log a station on SSB , N1MM plus will log it
as CW . But not every time , sometimes it logs correctly . It will do this
in reverse also , logging a Q in CW will log as SSB

I'm sure I've changed a setting because N1MM has work great for me the past
10 or so years. I've been chasing this for the past week

I'm using N1MM as a general log for working DX No contesting

Under Config / Mode control , I have set to Use Radio Mode

Under File / Open Log Database / Mode is set to SSB+CW

Anyone have an idea what setting I should change , N1MM or the K3

Tnx Ed N5DG

I powered up my K3 and discovered that the audio was very distorted. It
sounds as if everyone is off frequency and no amount of tuning will clear it
up. I was using 20 meter SB and it is the same on all other frequencies
except 2 meter. I checked all settings that I use and nothing has changed.
I had no problem the night before and problem was found on powering up the
radio today. I also use KPA-500 and KTA-500 with this setup. I also checked
and it is the same on both receivers. This unit was sent to Elecraft to be
checked over and aligned about 3 months ago and has been working great. This
radio has had all updates installed. Anybody have information on where to
start looking for problem would greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Bill,

I have not seen other radios that offer the same level of customization

You take the factory defaults and "like it" whether it is optimum for

Re: [Elecraft] K3 And WSJT-X FT8 Timing

2018-02-23 Thread Ted Bryant

Understood, Bob.

My point was that in the radio, with the VOX correctly adjusted, response to a
transmit command using VOX is virtually indistinguishable from PTT. Any
significant delay is on the release. Agree with you that PTT is the better
choice. Only mention VOX because that is what was chosen in the setup in this
case.

Btw, I copied your setup parameters for my K3 in the WSJT-X setup and I still
get the same, consistent 1-second delay before audio is transmitted. This is
not a problem, for me anyway. But those who are seeing longer, varying length
delays, it's puzzling. Computer OS problems, possibly?

But there is a delay in WSJT-X. See the F2 Setup, Advanced tab and
Miscellaneous. Make sure the TX Delay is set to 0.1 sec. This is the time
delay between PTT and start of audio. Also, if one uses CAT control, then be
sure the VOX on the radio is OFF. Don't use both.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 with N1MM - SPLIT mode

2018-02-20 Thread Ted Bryant
Tony,

It sounds like the software is operating correctly.

On the spots that you clicked on and the K3 went into Split mode, were the
spotted stations actually operating split?

This can also happen if the spotting station is in split mode when the spot
is sent to packet. You can prove this to yourself. Type a call into the
call sign field of the Entry window. Put the K3 in split mode with the sub
vfo a kHz or two away. Now just tune the main vfo away and watch the
self-spot go into the bandmap. Take the K3 out of split mode. Use Ctrl+Up
or Dn arrow and jump back to that spot. The K3 will go back into Split
mode with the same offset as when you spotted it.

Similarly, if the radio is in the split mode and you click on a non-split
spot, it will cancel the split on the radio.

HTH.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 And WSJT-X FT8 Timing

2018-02-23 Thread Ted Bryant
I find the same transmit delay when using my Icom 756ProIII as when using my
K3. That indicates the transmit delay is coming from the software, not the
radio.
The delay is consistent, ~ 1 second. Even so, to me a 1 second delay is not a
problem. On both radios manual PTT is instantaneous.

Richard, how are you doing PTT - DTR? RTS? VOX?

RIchard,

There are no long delays inherent in the K3/K3S transmit timing. It should be
ready to transmit RF within 5 to 15 ms of PTT assertion, depending on mode and
other factors.

My apologies; I have not been closely reading this thread. I’ll come up to

Re: [Elecraft] Using N1MM to Key a K3 with no outboard keyer

2018-08-01 Thread Ted Bryant
You do not need the "CATA1ASC " commands to key the K3/K3s via the CAT
control link.

Look here:

The K3 can accept PTT switching from several sources, including: a keying
circuit from a serial or parallel port to the K3's PTT IN; PTT from a
Winkeyer; RTS (pin 7) on the radio control RS232 port; using "Radio PTT via
command"; or VOX
It is better not to use multiple methods of PTT control in parallel; in some
cases, and depending on which version of firmware is installed, doing so can
leave a K3 stuck in transmit at the end of function-key messages. You should
not check "Radio PTT via command" if you are using RTS on the radio control
port, or any other hardware PTT connection, to control PTT
** Procedure for configuring RTS on the radio control RS232 port: Starting
with the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY set to OFF-OFF, check the CW/Other box beside
the radio control port in the Configurer and configure N1MM+ to control PTT
from RTS on the radio control port (Port setup), and then set the K3's
CONFIG:PTT-KEY to RTS-OFF (or RTS-DTR if you are also using CW via DTR)
Warning: leaving RTS set to Always on with the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY set to
RTS-OFF or RTS-DTR will cause the K3 to be permanently in transmit

The K3 accepts CW keying on DTR (pin 4) of the same COM port you're using to
control the K3. This method can be used when other methods (e.g. Winkeyer or
a keying circuit on a separate COM or LPT port) are not available
CW and radio control on the same COM port do NOT work in SO2R mode
CW on DTR does NOT work with some USB-to-serial adapters (e.g. Prolific
chipset - may depend on the driver version)
CW on DTR may be missing some capabilities and may have other undesired side
effects - use at your own risk
** Procedure: Starting with the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY set to OFF-OFF, check
the CW/Other box beside the radio control port in the Configurer and
configure N1MM+ to use DTR for CW on that port; set the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY
to OFF-DTR (or RTS-DTR if you are also using PTT via RTS)
Warning: leaving DTR set to Always on with the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY set to
OFF-DTR or RTS-DTR will cause a permanent "key-down" condition

Subject: [Elecraft] Using N1MM to Key a K3 with no outboard keyer

The following may test our commitment to the idea that there is no such
thing as a stupid question . . . .

I finally got around to setting up my N1MM logger to key my transmitters
without having to use a K1EL or any other keyer -- just the KUSB cable
directly from the PC into the rig.

After hours of frustrating failure, by lucky accident I came across a post
on the Internet that gave examples for programming the Fn keys, using N1MM
to key a KX3. Each command line contains the string CATA1ASC before the
command KY. Without the CATA1ASC, hitting the Fn key does nothing. With
it, and with the standard KY programming command, it works -- on the KX3 at
least. My K3 is at my other QTH so I haven't tried this on that rig yet,
but here's my question -- what is the CATA1ASC for? I did a word search in
both the KX3 and the N1MM manuals, and in the KX3 Programmer's Guide, and I
could find no mention of the CATA1ASC string. Had I not found the examples
on the Internet accidentally I would still be trying to make this work with
no success.

So can someone help me understand what it's about and why I didn't see it in
any of the manuals? Is it something in Windows 10?

Thanks,

Ted, KN1CBR

If you see low power it's a clue. I operate my K3S + KPA500 as a 500W

The previous times the wattmeter or IMD tests were the clues.

[Elecraft] Craziest / most rewarding QSOs

2018-09-14 Thread Ted Bryant
I have one wall of my shack covered with QSL cards from all over the world.
One particular card is from 7Q7AA in Malawi for a QSO in 1971. Many of you
may have worked him. One day I just happened to pay attention to the small
print at the bottom of the card. It noted the operator: B. J. "Tony"
Martin W4FOA. As it turns out, Tony W4FOA whom I have known for years, is a
member of our local Tennessee Valley DX Association. I knew Tony had been
active from several places in Africa when he worked for the government but
never associated him with that call sign. I took the card to one of our
meetings and we had a great conversation about his days in 7Q7.

I sometimes forget how small this hobby often makes our world.

Jim, when you do this, does anything get recorded?

Subject: [Elecraft] Recording received audio

I’ve been requested by my electric company to send a recording of the power
line noise I am encountering at my QTH.

I thought that would be an easy project….. connect the K3S Line Out to the
Mike In of my computer (Windows 10) and use the Voice Recorder to capture the
audio. But no matter what I try, Voice Recorder says to “set up the microphone
in Settings.” But when I go into settings and look at the Microphone level, I
can see the audio is apparently being received as the level varies as I change
the level of the data on the K3S line out. I tried using both the K3S
internal sound card and the computer sound card with no result.

Is there a better APP than Voice Recorder for this purpose?

What am I missing? This should be easy!! ☹️
