RE: Exchange server mailbox deletes

2002-05-30 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

Instead of turning them off completely, you can set up a server based rule
to look for the notification subject line and also look in the body of the
email for the deleted users email address and then just delete them. This
way you will still get notifications when someone just misspells a valid
user's email address.

Subject: Exchange server mailbox deletes

I have an Exchange server (5.5) that handles all the mailboxes for the
entire company. As with any company, I am constantly adding or removing
mail boxes. My question is, when I delete a mailbox, the incoming email for
that user goes to the Administrators mail box as User not found Is there
a way I can just reject the email, and not put a message in the Admin mail
box. The issue is many users get subscribed to all kinds of email lists,
and when a user leaves, I am overwhelmed with email that is intended for a
user that no longer has an email box on our system. We are not a large
company, but I get 300-500 of these types of messages a day.

Please help if you can.

Thanks in advance,

RE: Mail Exchangers for NT based systems

2002-05-15 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

Which version are you using? The beta 3.30 seems to work better than the
older released 3.xx version. There is a release 3.31 supposedly coming
soon. The main difference with 3.3x is the additon of IMAP (it also fixes a
memory leak problem in the older version).

RE: Can't move multiple message within Outlook??

2002-05-07 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

Try disabling your antivirus software for a minute and see if that cures the
problem. With Norton Antivirus, if you use the AVAPI mode you must enable
background scanning to that all attachments are pre-scanned (when new
definitions arrive) to prevent this type of problem.

Subject: Can't move multiple message within Outlook??

Exchange 5.5 SP4
Lately multiple Outlook 2000 clients have called that they are not able to
move multiple messages within their mailboxes or to public folders. I have
confirmed that it is indeed a problem. It seems that any message with an
attachment, big or small, can only be moved one at a time. Trying to move
two or more messages with attachments fails. Messages without attachments do
not seem to be having a problem. Furthermore, when I tried to move messges
by archiving the folder, archiving failed with a message that said it was
unable to move them. I used to be able to grap every message in a folder
and move it without a problem.

1. Has anyone else experienced this, and do you have a solution? 2. Could it
be that my the virus software is trying to scan these messages with
attachments and is causing the failure? I am using Groupshield for
Exchange. I have been using this for several years, and this problem never
before existed. I am going to follow up with them as well. 3. Could any of
the latest MS security patches be causing this type of problem? Any help is
appreciated Thank You, Valerie

Best way to clean up corrupt calendar folder? (on server)

2002-05-01 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

I had one user who could not syncronize her calendar over the air with her
blackberry. The errors in the event log basically said that the CDO stuff
could not access the calendar. Email was forwarding just fine. After
trying all sorts of things on the blackberry server, I finally created a new
mailbox (with a different username) and synced the blackberry up with that
(the calendar worked fine).

I then exported everything from the user's mailbox to a PST file (so I could
delete the mailbox and create a new one just like it). After exporting all
the mailbox contents I tried deleting everything from the calendar folder
(by using view by category and deleting everything). After doing only that
(i.e. not yet creating a new mailbox) the blackberry still would not sync
with the calendar (over the air). The calendar appeared completely empty
from an outlook 2000 client. When I tried via OWA there was an appointment
still showing up in the calendar (yikes).

After deleting the mailbox and creating a new one with the same alias and
email address, the old data was imported from the PST and the blackberry
syncs up fine now.

My only question was if there was some better way of fixing the calendar
short of what I did. I had tried all of the /cleanfreebusy /cleanreminder
/cleanshedplus options in outlook with no improvement.

RE: Best way to clean up corrupt calendar folder? (on server)

2002-05-01 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

I downloaded the publicly available cdo.dll (as instructed by the bb server
install readme) and also got PSS to email me a newer unreleased cdo.dll (per
rim's instructions). Neither of these helped the calendar access problem.
I'll search around for the old exchange client and give it a try. I have
another user with different calendar issues I can try it on (the keep
getting unable to update free/busy errors all several times a day).

This is when the old Exchange Client comes in handy. You could have exported
the calendar to a PST and then deleted the calendar folder. The next time
you started OL, one would have been created.

It also sounds like you need the CDO hotfix for Exchange. BB support should
be able to help with that.

Well... this is an exploit of an old OWA bug on 5.5.

If you are running OWA for Exchange 5.5 below ex SP2, you should be able to
delete the calendar folder via OWA. Then login to the mailbox via normal
MAPI, and it will re-create.

This may or may not comply with ppl's idea of stable... or sane
practice, but then again, I may not comply with such ideas too.

RE: OWA Problem

2002-04-25 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

If you get the entire OWA screen including the icon bar on the left and the
menus at the top but do NOT get the list of email messages, then the problem
could be a proxy server. The OWA client uses some html functions that are
not supported by some proxy servers.

There is a nice OWA troubleshooting procedure for exchange 2000 at:

Ok, let me see if I can phrase this out correctly:

I'm taking over some Exchange 2K Servers. I have already applied SP2 and the
latest patches in the ones that didn't have it yet, and now I'm checking to
see if they are all stable.

One of them returns me errors when I'm accessing through OWA. I can login, I
see my folders, but when I click on inbox, for instance, I can't see the
mails. It just says Loading... and I get a message on the bottom of IE,
saying there were errors loading that page.

Anyone has any thought on what may be causing this?

CDO update 5.5.2655.79 available anywhere?

2002-04-24 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

Blackberry tech support tells me that there is a new version of cdo.dll that
may fix my blackberry server problems (some users can't sync calendars over
the air). The new cdo.dll is supposed to be 5.5.2655.79 and is referenced
in the unreleased KB article Q312273. I don't really want to pay MS $245
(is that right?) to ask for this DLL which probably won't fix my blackberry
server anyway, so I was wondering if anyone knew if this was available for
download anywhere yet? Or has anyone solved their blackberry server
calendar sync problems by installing this?

I just installed sp3a of the blackberry server which made no difference. In
the blackberry logs I get many CDO errors (for one of the two users I have
set up so far). They look like this in case anyone is a bb expert:

[40091] (04/24 16:06:14):{0x8A} GetCDOAppointment - Filter of calendar

(I have sent the entire logs to blackberry and so far their only
recommendation was to install bbserver sp3a and get this CDO thing).

Subject: EX55 sp4: Inbound IMC messages stuck problem update

A few days ago I reported a problem with inbound emails getting
  stuck in
 the
IMC inbound queue. Here are some more details:

This has happened 3 different times so far. The first time the IMC
had stopped processing all inbound traffic. I tried to stop it with
control panel/services but it would not stop. I finally forcibly
ended the MSEXCIMC.EXE process with task manager and then restarted
it. The first time the large backlog of inbound files started to
  flow and I was left
 with
4 messages that would not transfer. I tried stopping IMC again (it
would never stop via control panel once it had seen one of these bad
emails) but it would not process them even after deleting queue.dat
  (while imc was stopped).

I gave up on the 4 emails and let it run for a while but after a few
hours two more emails got stuck. Again I had to forcibly terminate
the IMC process and delete queue.dat. I also discovered that if I
  tried to view
 the
queues with exchange admin, that the admin program would freeze when
  I
 tried
to select the MTS-IN queue on the IMC. I could look at the IMC
inbound queue and see the messages that weren't being processed (and
they were sitting there in the IMCDATA/IN directory). All I could
do is remove them from the IN directory and stop/restart IMC while
deleting queue.dat. If I tried to reintroduce one of the 'bad'
messages to the IN directory (by stopping IMC, deleting queue.dat,
copying the file to IN and restarting
 IMC)
it would fail in the same fashion. The weird part is that after the
first restart of IMC, it would still process other inbound emails.
  This
 happened
a third time (with two similar messages) and again I moved them out
of the IN directory. It has been running for a whole day now
  without getting
 stuck
on a message. I looked at all the 'bad' messages and did not see
anything unusual about them. I did not see anything at all in the
event log for these messages. I currently have all of the imc log
  settings at maximum
 in
  case it happens again.

RE: CPU Stress Test

2002-03-28 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

There is a program called CPUBURN (do a google search) that is designed to
make your CPU work hard (and heat up). This can be run in a dos window or
right from dos.

You should also consider running a good ram test. I have had good luck with
memtest-86 from:

http://www.teresaudio.com/memtest86/

This works from a boot floppy. I always run this or simmtester
(www.simmtester.com) on a new machine before installing the OS.

need to test this thing before I throw exch2k on it. It has been a little
buggy before. Dell PowerEdge 4400. Thanks.

RE: Talking Bad Gets You Back

2002-03-28 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

I have seen that problem with a ghosted copy of win2k/outlook2k. I used
sysprep so I could enter a new serial number on the copied machine and
everything worked except outlook. I found an MSKB article that said to
uninstal/reinstall tcpip and that fixed outlook. The tcpip seemed to work
OK for IE and other IP stuff.

The answer is, Un-install and re-install TCP/IP.

Outlook works fine now.

I tell people these computers are almost human, and I am believing it more
and more. One pc we had so much trouble with the user was so sarcastic, the
guy that was helping me said it must be all the negativity around the
computer that was causing it to fail.

I go bad mouthing Dell and the last Dell I setup is hosed up in 3 days.
First web folders will not work, then the display messed up. So we did a
Windows 2000 repair and it fixed the following problems, but now Outlook 98
will not work. Un-installing and re-installing Outlook did not help, it will
not resolve the name to the Exchange server. I did make a ERU disk and saved
the registry.

Any suggestions besides re-formatting?

Thanks,

Bill Kuhl

EX55 sp4: Inbound IMC messages stuck problem update

2002-03-27 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

A few days ago I reported a problem with inbound emails getting stuck in the
IMC inbound queue. Here are some more details:

This has happened 3 different times so far. The first time the IMC had
stopped processing all inbound traffic. I tried to stop it with control
panel/services but it would not stop. I finally forcibly ended the
MSEXCIMC.EXE process with task manager and then restarted it. The first
time the large backlog of inbound files started to flow and I was left with
4 messages that would not transfer. I tried stopping IMC again (it would
never stop via control panel once it had seen one of these bad emails) but
it would not process them even after deleting queue.dat (while imc was
stopped).

I gave up on the 4 emails and let it run for a while but after a few hours
two more emails got stuck. Again I had to forcibly terminate the IMC
process and delete queue.dat. I also discovered that if I tried to view the
queues with exchange admin, that the admin program would freeze when I tried
to select the MTS-IN queue on the IMC. I could look at the IMC inbound
queue and see the messages that weren't being processed (and they were
sitting there in the IMCDATA/IN directory). All I could do is remove them
from the IN directory and stop/restart IMC while deleting queue.dat. If I
tried to reintroduce one of the 'bad' messages to the IN directory (by
stopping IMC, deleting queue.dat, copying the file to IN and restarting IMC)
it would fail in the same fashion. The weird part is that after the first
restart of IMC, it would still process other inbound emails. This happened
a third time (with two similar messages) and again I moved them out of the
IN directory. It has been running for a whole day now without getting stuck
on a message. I looked at all the 'bad' messages and did not see anything
unusual about them. I did not see anything at all in the event log for
these messages. I currently have all of the imc log settings at maximum in
case it happens again.

RE: Dell Diags

2002-03-27 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

We recently got some dells with bogus off brand network cards in them (we
specified 3com- not sure if dell or our purchasing fouled up). These bogus
cards would not work with the 8 port switching hub they were connected to.
We had to switch to a different 24port hub to get things running. The
network would barely work (very slowly) and if you ran the built in net diag
it would show many dropped packets (when connected to the 8 port switch).

I had to vent, thought maybe someone who I could have contact at Dell to
resolve our issues. The first Dell had intermittent problems in Windows 98,
support was no help, but when it was updated to Windows 2000 the problem
disappeared. Our latest GX240's lockup once a day on the network. Support
said there are no issues but I found the issue on their web site. Installed
new NIC driver, seem to help but not total answer. Support sent a restore CD
and I used that on a couple of pc's, that has helped also.

I feel the same way about ComPaq.

They are worse.

Messages stuck in IMC inbound Queue - EX55 - can't stop IMC (nice ly)

2002-03-25 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

I noticed this morning that a bunch of messages were piling up in my IMC
(IMS?) inbound (queued inbound). The number was only increasing. I tried
to stop the IMC but it never responded to the control panel/services stop
command. I finally forcibly terminated it with taskman. When I restarted
it there were no error in the event log (nor were there before stopping) but
no improvement. I noticed that a few of the messages were from last week
and a couple more from much earlier in the day. I tried killing IMC (it
never would stop nicely) and deleting queue.dat but that did not help
either. I then started to move the suspect messages out of the IN directory
(after killing IMC and deleting queue.dat) and I got things flowing again.
But I now have 5 messages that I cannot process. I tried dropping them into
PICKUP where they were immediately grabbed but not really processed. The
were moved to PICKUP/ARCHIVE and errors logged in the event log that a valid
address could not be determined from the message.

Has anyone seen such problems and/or have any advice?

RE: Changed NIC - Andy David is GODLIKE!

2002-03-19 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

OK, so maybe Perf Optimizer really wasn't needed. Maybe just another reboot
was all that was needed but it is working again. I was just about ready to
give our new employee a hotmail address since I could not add him to
exchange.

One note: When I ran perf optimizer it hung saying that it was stopping the
system attendant. I checked services and all the exchange stuff had
stopped. I killed perf opt. with taskman and started it again. This time
it saw that everything was stopped and went right to the options screen. It
did not recommend any changes, yet asked if it was OK to automatically move
the files (which I OK'ed). After reboot I could once again open the IMS
properties and also add new mailboxes.

Thanks Andy! I owe you (something?).

Long ago we used it but have been fully migrated for a few years. It was
set to disabled in services (the msmail connector) and I don't recall having
clicked on it lately.

I can view and change most of the properties in an existing mailbox EXCEPT
for the email address tab. If I try to add an additional address to an
existing mailbox I get the same hang (admin program not responding and has
hourglass) as when I try to add a new mailbox.

Typically, you should run the Perm Optimizer after changes (Hard drive, RAM
etc, though no necessarily NICS...) It may help to run it here as well.

Was the MSMAIL conn used at one time?

Opening is OK. The only things that hang the admin program that I have
found so far is clicking on the IMS under connections (or also the no longer
in use msmail connector) and trying to add a mailbox. I can navigate and
open everything else I have tried including modifying an existing mailbox.

Might not be related, but a changed NIC means a changed MAC. Was the server

I have an exchange 5.5 sp4 server that has been working fine for
 years.
On
Saturday I shut it down to replace the network card (3c905) with a new
one (intel gigabyte desktop T). At the same time I also ran windows
 update
(http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and applied the critical updates
(that
were just for IE6 I believe). After starting it up everything seemed
 to work fine.

This morning I tried to use the Exchange ADMIN program to view the IMS
queue
and the admin program just hangs when I select connections/ims. It
 must
be
killed with task manager. I tried the admin program both on the
 server
and
also on a separate client machine which used to work. Both hang the
admin program when IMS is selected. Every thing else in the admin
 program
appears
to work fine except the MSMAIL connector (which we no longer use) also
hangs. All the other functions seem to work in the admin program.

I tried stopping and restarting the IMS in services but that did not
help. I may try rebooting the server tonight to see if that helps

RE: Changed NIC woes are worsening - I can't add a new mailbox

2002-03-18 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

There was no error (the admin program hung). You can start adding a new
user- ie fill in the name, alias account etc but if you click OK the admin
program stops responding. The same thing happens with clicking the IMS. I
am able to change an existing mailbox - ie I changed my title without
problems (didn't get a raise though).

The updates applied were Q304158 and Q305929.

Thanks...

Thanks...

Tom

What was the error?
And what exactly was updated from windowsupdate?

s!) (V5.5)

I have an exchange 5.5 sp4 server that has been working fine for years. On
Saturday I shut it down to replace the network card (3c905) with a new one
(intel gigabyte desktop T). At the same time I also ran windows update
(http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and applied the critical updates (that
were just for IE6 I believe). After starting it up everything seemed to
work fine.

This morning I tried to use the Exchange ADMIN program to view the IMS queue
and the admin program just hangs when I select connections/ims. It must be
killed with task manager. I tried the admin program both on the server and
also on a separate client machine which used to work. Both hang the admin
program when IMS is selected. Every thing else in the admin program appears
to work fine except the MSMAIL connector (which we no longer use) also
hangs. All the other functions seem to work in the admin program.

I tried stopping and restarting the IMS in services but that did not help. I
may try rebooting the server tonight to see if that helps.

Has anyone seen this problem before??

RE: Changed NIC - now can't control IMS via Exch. Admin program ( hang s!) (V5.5)

2002-03-18 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

I'm no guru to exch as often evident by some of my post's But..Never the
lessMaybe reapply Exch SP4 and reboot?

My guess is that it's likely the MS update .
but then it could be the nic drivers and etc..software from it.

Are they going to have a 3.0 version for Exchange 5.5? Maybe they get a

Well, they ship updates to gold support contract customers quarterly.
Platinum support gets an FTP site. My rep sent it to me, I installed it to
test, and it immediately freaked out. There are issues. Like it doesn't
start. I sent them just about every configuration file and registry key and
diagnostic and event log in the known universe, and they can't figure it
out. When they come out with 3.01 and can have an engineer tell me in
graphic detail what the problem was, I'll test it again.

A custom recipient is the Exchange 5.5 equivalent of Exchange and Windows
2000's mail-enabled contact. Had you specified the version you're running I
would have used the proper term.

If a Unix user doesn't use the mailbox, then just give them a custom
recipient. There's no point in them having mailboxes they won't be using.

Hey Tom, you're going to feel kind of dumb high-centered on a log in
that Ferrari. Sendmail is just as powerful and far more
flexible
than Exchange - in certain areas. Chaining a Sendmail server in front
of
an
Exchange server is a valid solution, as is Ed's idea.
I'm not sure I'd really compare Sendmail Exchange. I'd say Sendmail is an
MTA and Exchange is a groupware platform. The original issue was procmail.

I'm not familiar with Ed's suggestion: configure mail-enabled users. What
we ended up doing for the few that wanted (a) to use procmail or
(b) to be able to use mailboxes mounted off a UNIX filesystem was: 1.
Create a mailbox for everyone. 2. Create an custom recipient (Internet
E-Mail) user@unixmailserver 3. Set mail to be delivered to both mailbox
custom recipient

The users are then responsible for creating a rule in Outlook which deletes
all E-Mails of type message (moves to deleted items, set deleted items to
get flushed every night). Messages left in inbox are meeting requests, etc,
which must be handled using Outlook. They know they have to go to outlook
to do it becasue they receive a text-type meeting request in their unix
account.

It seems to satisfy the unix folks. But if you've got a huge organization,
this may not be administratively practical...

To Samir, the original poster, you might also look at Slipstick.com
and see if any of the solutions there will help.

spam filtering is getting more and more desirable as an add-on for all

Outlook 2000 slow and consumes 100% cpu when starting and opening messages

2002-02-19 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

I have a problem with a particular machine starting outlook and opening
messages. During outlook startup and whenever a message is opened, the cpu
pegs at 100% for 15 to 20 seconds and then the message comes up ok. The
problem is not with the mailbox on the exchange server as there is no
problem accessing the account from another machine. The antivirus program
was uninstalled with no improvement. A new profile was also tried with no
improvement. Outlook was uninstalled/reinstalled also with no improvement.
The weird part is that the messages come right up in the preview pane. I.E.
you can switch between messages and the new message shows up instantly in
the preview pane. Also, word is NOT the email editor. I found nothing
searching mskb, deja, google, slipstick and the archives of this list for
this problem.

Is this possible? Several members of the firm that I am consulting for claim
to have had this problem. They came in one morning several days ago and to
their surprise, mail that they NEVER read was marked as being read by
outlook. The firm is running Exchange 5.5 with outlook as a client .

Some possibilities are: 1.)something happened to the internal database that
caused this error.2.) Someone within the company tampered with the mail and
read their mail, thus marking it as read. 3.) Perhaps their backup system
had something to do with it. They are doing brick level back ups using
Veritas 8.5.

#3 does not seem like an option since only two people, albeit high level IT
people, were affected. This also NEVER happened before.

Any help would be appreciated.

Somehow this one slipped past our .com filter on our linux firewall. NAV
for exchange caught it by the .COM extension, and norton had just
liveupdated us an hour earlier with the new definitions that would have
caught it if it wasn't a blocked extension. I think the syntax of the

Fortunately we're all blocking *.com right? The *.com viruses are going to
take forever to combat from a social engineering standpoint. It's probably
worth investing some time in user education on .com files because I think
this is going to be a new favorite virus writing style for the next few
months.

Be aware that this morning you will likely find a copy of this new mass
mailer in your mail systems. This is a pure social engineering attack, it
contains an attachment named as a URL with a .com extension. Since .com is
also an application, it will be run as such if its double-clicked on. Check
with your AV company for updates and/or filtering criteria. If you can, be
sure you have attachment filtering enabled at your mail gateway. Outlook
Email Security Update, and Outlook 2002, both catch this attachment and
prevent it from being available for the user to click on.

This one slipped by our *.com file matching as well... actually it's been a
little hit and miss... some were caught but others were not stopped until we
installed the defnition file--We're running Antigen with the Norman def. I'm
still seeing weird stuff some seem to be getting through he IMC scan and
making it to the store and getting disinfected there. That's the first time
I've ever seen that. Very odd indeed. Most that are being caught are by
the virus definition--because generally we just get the *.com type block
message. Wonder what's going on here.

Fortunately we run something different on the desktop--and it had updated
through the night.

Somehow this one slipped past our .com filter on our linux firewall. NAV
for exchange caught it by the .COM extension, and norton had just
liveupdated us an hour earlier with the new definitions that would have
caught it if it wasn't a blocked extension. I think the syntax of the
attachment code is probably not RFC compliant.

Now, how can my users see a resource's free/busy time? Right now, we have

RE: Importing Users .pst files into the Server Store

2002-01-14 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

DANGER! DANGER!

If you bring a lot of mail into your store without doing a backup, you will
generate an equal amount of data in your log files (which are zeroed after
successful backup). If you have your logs and your store on different
drives (as you should) you may run out of free space on your log drive!
I.E. if you import 10gig of psts into your store all in one day, you better
have more than 10Gig free on both drives.

Hello,

I searched Technet pretty extensively, and I am swimming in the ocean of
information that came up. Everything I find, seems just short of what I
need.

Up to this point, our POP3 clients have been retrieving their mail from the
server, and storing everything in their personal .pst file on their
workstations.

My goal is to move / import all of their .pst files, onto the message store
on the Exchange 2000 Server. We are under the gun to centrally store
everyone's mail, in order to get the collaboration stuff working.

Is there a built-in utility (either GUI based or command line) that I can
use to accomplish this?

Thank you in advance for any information offered.

RE: IMC originator

Is there any way to have exchange 5.5 treat those NDR messages to bad
spammer email addresses differently than real emails? I delete them when I
see them in the queue, but It would be nice if you could make exchange give
up real easily (quickly) when trying to send an NDR to a bad address.

The RFC isn't real clear on this. We've gone round on this before and it
seems that server can optionally deny the message up-front or accept it and
than NDR it back to the sender. Exchange does the latter.

This is going to be a little off topic, but I thought I would post it in
case someone ran into it as well.

I have ScanMail moving infected files. One of the files that was moved into
the \VIRUS area was a FUN.MP3 that is listed as a short cut. I cannot
delete due to a sharing violation (believe ScanMail still has locked). Once
you try to delete or look at the attributes, your NT workstation jumps up to
100% CPU utilization for EXPLORER. Even disconnecting the mapped drive does
not clear EXPLORER.EXE and the only way to get your workstation back is to
reboot.

I duplicated this on 3 NT workstations. Two running NT 4.0 sp6a one running
sp5. Took me 3 days to determine what was causing my workstation to go
crazy. I sure won't clear the areas from the server console. I can just
see me killing the box!

RE: Antivirus causing move errors thingamajig

2001-12-14 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

I think there is a registry switch to force it to scan the entire email (not
just the attachment). That of course requires mapi/avapi mode as avapi only
sees attachments (right?). The attachments probably make up 90% of the
store anyway (huge powerpoints and such). I don't know if that switch
affects the background scanning or not.

Tom,

Actually (correct me if I'm wrong and I'm sure someone on this list will),
when the definitions are updated, it only rescans the attachments within the
store, not the entire store. Therefore, if you are like Seielstad or
Blackstone and block ALL attachments, g it should only take a couple of
minutes to rescan the IS.

I am running NAV 2.12 in MAPI/VAPI and it seems to work fine IF the
background scanning option is enabled. The only drawback is that every time
the definitions are updated it must rescan the whole IS in the background
(about 24 hours for our 20G store). In version 2.14 the added an option to
inhibit the automatic rescanning when new definitions are installed. How
did you get version 2.17? We paid extra for a year of updates and had to
call and bug them to get the corporate 7.6 update but they sent no navmse

If you check the archives, I had and still have the same problem here with
NAV and users not being able to move attachments. I had MS look at it and
Symantec and both blamed each other. I ran optimiser and that didn't cure
it. The next stage (which I still haven't got round to yet) is checking the
IS for corruption. What I have found is that when I upgrade to a new
version of NAV (uninstall/reinstall) it starts of working fine and then
gradually performance becomes a real issue with alot of stuff being
quarantined (when quarantining is disabled!) and users start to get mail
sitting in the outbox for a while. I am running NAV 2.17 Build 75 in

So your problem is the same one I ran into:

-Had old NAV for exchange 2.0 running in mapi mode (only mode it supported).

-Upgraded to NAV 2.1 and enabled dual mapi/avapi mode.

-Users could not move multiple messages at once without errors. Also
exporting to a PST file would cause errors and an incomplete export.

-Went back to MAPI only mode.

-Got nervous and went back to MAPI/AVAPI mode but enabled the background
scan. No complaints yet, but I have not tried to break it either.

scanning option that will prescan all your mail whenever new definitions

Subject: Antivirus causing move errors thingamajig

A while back I submitted a item about getting errors(access denied errors)
when moving emails to and from mailboxes and someone suggested it may be
related to VAPI mode in my antivirus, something to do with a scan time or
something. Does anyone have the vaguest clue what I'm talking about?

I looked back but I cant seem to find it.

Recap
Single site, single domain. Exchange 5.5 sp4 w/hots, NT4 sp6 Users trying
to move large emails or lots of emails get a cant move access denied errors.

RE: Antivirus causing move errors thingamajig

2001-12-11 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

Are you running Norton AV for exchange? If so, there is a background
scanning option that will prescan all your mail whenever new definitions
arrive. Once they are prescanned, a multi message move will not require all
the messages to be checked for viruses. I turned on the background scan
option here and it took over a day to scan everything (about 20gig of mail),
but a definition update came in the middle of that.

MS says antivirus not effective on Exchange 5.5: must buy E2000

2001-12-10 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

MS is now saying that even the AVAPI mode of exchange 5.5 can let viruses
slip through under load. The only solution is to upgrade to Exchange 2000.
From NTBUGTRAQ:

===
Message from NTBUGTRAQ mailing list shown below:

===
No real news for some, but the recent waves of mass mailers have once again
demonstrated how Exchange Server 5.5 plus an Anti-Virus product may not do
an effective job at handling mass mailers. But don't blame your Anti-Virus
vendor, the problem comes when the Exchange Server 5.5 is put under load.
How much load? Nobody seems to be able to say for sure. However, when under
sufficient load Exchange Server 5.5 will simply not notify the AV product
there's a message to scan, and instead pass it through to the recipient.

Prior to Exchange Server 5.5 SP3, AV Vendors used MAPI-based scanning.
However, Microsoft's KB article Q263949 says;

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q263949

If you select MAPI-based scanning, be aware that the vendor's software may
not scan all attachments because first and exclusive access is not
guaranteed.

SP3 introduced the Virus Scanning API 1.0, and many vendors provided support
for it because it was more reliable. But Microsoft have acknowledged that
even VSAPI 1.0 can't always handle the load of an internal infection, and
rather than losing messages, sends them through without notifying the AV
product.

Exchange Server 2000 SP1, with its VSAPI 2.0, says;

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q285667

The enhancements to the virus scanning API that are included in Exchange
2000 Server SP1 represent the next step in the evolution of the commitment
that Microsoft has made to protecting customer investment. These new
features, known as virus scanning API 2.0, fulfill many of the shortcomings
of virus scanning API 1.0.

You gotta love it, the next step in the evolution of the commitment...;-]
So the commitment is evolving to, presumably eventually, actually let
customers protect themselves...but we're not there yet.

AV Vendors are strongly urging their customers to switch to Exchange Server
2000.

Microsoft say they have no plans to make VSAPI 2.0 available for Exchange
Server 5.5, so to get secure, upgrade.

The number of times customers have actually been bitten by this problem is
unknown, suffice it to say it doesn't happen often. Reports I've received
indicate that the load required to make Exchange Server 5.5 start missing
infected messages (or messages with attachments that have been indicated
should be stripped) comes about as a result of one, or more, mass-mailers
active in your internal network.

For example, someone uses a web-based mail service and opens an
email/attachment that invokes a mass-mailer. Once the mass-mailer starts
bombing the Exchange Server 5.5, depending on the hardware, it can then get
to a point where the load is great enough to cause it to miss inbound
messages.

Using the Outlook Email Security Update or Outlook 2002, both of which
prevent mass-mailers from programmatically accessing the Exchange Addresses,
can help to prevent infections that occur outside of the normal AV path.
Using client-side AV products can also help.

Consider also putting a second network adapter on your Exchange Server(s).
If internal clients connect to one adapter, and the infrastructure to the
other, you can more easily disconnect your clients from the Exchange Server
should you detect its under load. Minimizing what your Exchange Server is
doing also helps, size it appropriately and don't use it for anything else.
Consider also putting your AV product on its own box.

What is Microsofts web address for downloading IE so I can throw it onto a

downloads the real IE.

Changed NAV to mapi/avapi mode and still background scanning...

2001-12-07 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

I changed NAV for exchange back to MAPI/AVAPI mode and enabled the
background scanning. It's supposed to take 1hour/gig and I have 20gig of
data. My dual 200mhz server has been scanning since 2pm yesterday, but
Symantec posted new definitions last night (got them at 2:00am) so the
background scan probably started over at that point.

I was worried that there would be a massive slowdown while background
scanning but nobody has complained yet. Both cpu's are averaging about 40%
utilization. The status screen claims to have scanned over 40G of data so
maybe it's almost finished...

RE: Is there a workaround to use both MAPI and AVAPI with NAV fo r Ex change 5.5?

2001-12-06 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

I have SP4 (hopefully the latest AVAPI) and the latest NAV for exchange 5.5.
There is a MSKB article about enabling background scanning as a fix for
these problems. Apparently it knows if a background scan was already
completed so it doesn't get delayed as much. The downside to the background
scan (according to the article) is that the entire store must be rescanned
after each definition update at a rate of 1GB/hr (no hardware specified).
My dual 200 mhz server maybe isn't that fast and my 20GB store could
possibly bog down the server for a full day each time there are new
definitions loaded.

I don't think there's any good reason to use MAPI if AVAPI is working. AVAPI
is supposedly infallible because it's in the middle of message flow; that
is, no messages are supposed to pass unless being passed through the AVAPI.
I'm not familiar with NAV, but you should be absolutely sure that you have
the latest versions of NAV's code and the Microsoft AVAPI code. Earlier
versions were problematic.

When we loaded the latest NAV for exchange 5.5 it had the new AVAPI option
so we had it use both MAPI and AVAPI modes. This seemed to work but several
strange things began to happen. First thing we noticed is that users who
tried to move a lot of messages from one folder to another would get error
messages (message was moved or access denied) and only some of the messages
would move. They could get around this problem by moving messages one at a
time, but if they were trying to move 200 messages this would be
unsatisfactory. Also, if you would try to export a users mail to a PST
file, you would get the same type of error and you would end up with a PST
that only had some of the messages you tried to export.

We turned off AVAPI and all is good again, except I'm sure it is possible to
slip a virus past the scanner if it gets too busy. Does anyone know of a
workaround to make the AVAPI thing really work?

The other good reason is that the AVAPI only scanning has no idea who the
message is to/from, only that it found a virus somewhere.

The Microsoft AVAPI 1.0 for Exchange 5.5 only provides scanning of message
attachments.
So an additional method, such as MAPI, is required to scan the message
bodies.

Having said that it has been on my own private test network now for 48 hours

RE: Is there a workaround to use both MAPI and AVAPI with NAV fo r Ex change 5.5?

2001-12-06 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

Yes I read that one. Notice where it says:

All attachments are rescanned after virus signatures are updated. Before an
operation can gain access to these attachments, it is important that you
plan a signature update to occur during off-peak hours. This allows time for
the attachments to be scanned and made available to MAPI operations. Due to
the way that some anti-virus vendors update their product, stop and restart
the information store after a virus signature upgrade to re-initiate the
background scanning task.

After you enable the BackgroundScanning value, Microsoft recommends that
you allow approximately one hour to pass for each gigabyte (GB) of
attachments that is stored in your private information store before you
perform a MAPI operation, to ensure that all attachments have been scanned.
After that amount of time, MAPI error messages are greatly reduced or may be
eliminated.

So every time there is a definition update, I *may* have to stop and restart
NAV and my server will be really slow for 24 hours (24GIG store). Norton
will be doing daily def updates before long so that means the server will
spend 100% of its time scanning. Hmmm Maybe I need a dual P4-2000
server just to support antivirus?

There have been enough links posted in here in the past 50~ hours. So to

Yes this is in the symantec knowledgebase for NAV for Exchange. It tells
you what to exclude to prevent the file antivirus from interfering with
exchange or the navexchange.

I have been receiving errors related to a Badtrans virus on

Norton shows Action: clean failed Quarantine succeeded: Access denied

In the Event Log The error code 2 was returned when trying to remove

And another error about changing attributes.

Anyone have an idea about what could be wrong?

 Thanks,

Is there a workaround to use both MAPI and AVAPI with NAV for Ex change 5.5?

2001-12-05 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

Do your content blockers stop attachment when they are TNEF encod ed?

2001-12-05 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

When an attachment is encoded with TNEF, the filename is embedded in the
encoded part. We have a filetype filter on our firewall machine, but it
cannot tell what is in a TNEF encoded attachment. Once the file gets to our
exchange server, NAV can block by extension. Since we are running in MAPI
mode, I don't trust this to always catch these. Do any of the content
filtering products work with TNEF files?

RE: Do your content blockers stop attachment when they are TNEF e ncod ed?

2001-12-05 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

WHAT IS TNEF?

Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format, or TNEF, is a format of
encapsulation used exclusively by Microsoft to send a message using
Microsoft Rich Text. TNEF is proprietary to Microsoft products such as
Outlook, Outlook Express and Exchange. Lotus Notes does not have the ability
to decipher TNEF. TNEF attachments can be generated in two ways:

1) if a Microsoft Exchange's internet mail connector is configured to send
TNEF. The default option of the Internet Mail Connector is set to User,
meaning the client can select the option of using TNEF or not. The other
options for the IMC is Always or Never ,

OR

2) sending of 'winmail.dat' can be set in the address book on a
per-recipient basis. NOTE: The Exchange setting overrides the setting in the
Personal Address Book. Also note that the wording of the setting in the
address book is different in the various Microsoft mail clients.

RE: Server why, why me

A good free ram test program is available a www.simmtester.com. It creates
a bootable (dos) floppy that will run a ram test for as many times as you
wish. If you have a hard failure you will probably know withing 5 minutes
(somewhere in the first pass). I had one system that would fail after about
20 minutes when things warmed up.

Came into work today and my exchange server 5.5 on windows nt sp6 was not
responding. I dont know how this happened, the only thing that was on the
desktop was the cursor and wallpaper no icons or start menu. I tried to
press Ctrl alt del and nothing happened. Couldnt get the server to respond
for some reason. The cusor would move when I moved the mouse and thats it
so I pressed the big button. The server is up and running fine now and I
check the event viewer and the only thing it gave me back was an unexpected
shutdown occoured at 11:46pm. Did this ever happen to anyone before. All

RE: OWA 5.5 question

2001-11-19 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

Simplifying Authentication

After a user enters his/her name on the logon page and clicks the link, they
have to re-enter their username and enter a password in a web browser
authentication window. This can be confusing for users because in the
authentication window they need to enter both their domain name and
username, in the form NTDomain\username.

You can work around this issue as described below. This will allow users to
enter only the user name and password and not the domain name also.

If you're using IIS4, open the Management Console on the IIS computer with
the Active Server Components. Under the Properties of your Exchange Web
Site, on the Directory Security Tab, open the Edit button under Anonymous
Access and Authentication Control. Open the Edit button under Basic
Authentication, and enter the default domain you wish to use.

If you do not have IIS4, then you can make this change by adding the
following information into the registry on the IIS computer with the Active
Server Components.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And
Values Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the Add and Delete
Information in the Registry and Edit Registry Data Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe or Regedit.exe as appropriate for your
version of Windows NT).
Go to the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC\Parameters
On the Edit menu, click New Value, and then click String Value.
Enter a new string value called DefaultLogonDomain with data of the
DomainName (where DomainName is the name of the domain where the user
account resides).
Quit Registry Editor. Restart all of the IIS services for the changes to
take effect.

Subject: OWA 5.5 question

I'm going to have to install an OWA server for Exchange 5.5 and I'm reading
through my notes... all looks like I remember with one exception... I seem
to remember that I changed a file so that my users would not have to use
domain\username when logging in.. just username.. I don't see this in
my notes, but I KNOW I did changed a file for this to occur... anyone
remember what the changes are (actually I think it was two files)?

Thanks for any help you can provide... for the life of me I can't find this
documented in a Q article or any of the exchange sites I visit.

Subject: Automatically send email from Outlook

Part of our library's new system is a PC application which
(supposedly) will extract relevant information from
the main server (e.g. book overdue, email address
of borrower) and then use an open email client on the PC
to send out a notice to the borrower.

The email client in question is Outlook 2000.

When the library application attempts the above
Outlook generates the following message
A program is trying to access your Address Book
and permits the user
To allow unsecured access for a specified time period of up to 10 minutes.
We select 10 minutes.

However the library application deposits each notice it generates in the
Outbox of Outlook and on each deposit displays the message A program is
trying to automatically send email on your behalf. Do you want to allow
this? requiring the user to click yes (for each item) before the item is
sent.

Can anyone suggest a way to automate the task of assenting to the messages
in the Outbox being sent, as the aim is to have these messages emailed out
without as little user intervention as possible? (Currently in the order of
30 messages need to be emailed a day but as the term progresses this is
likely to become 300+)

Many thanks,
Alastair Morrison

If there's no indication of problems with the disk, try checking the
transaction logs to see if a large number of logs were generated in a short
period of time corresponding to the hang. I've seen instances where 5.5 SP4
servers become unresponsive to clients as a result of someone attempting to
send a *huge* attachment (500Mb+) and it bogged down the server. If this
does prove to be the case then consider implementing internal message size
limits.

RE: EX5.5 Server just froze up - would post SP4 patches help?

2001-10-29 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

There is nothing in the logs pointing to a bad HD. I suspect either a RAM
problem or a glitch in the RAID (mirror) controller. Nothing shows up in
the RAID log, but I am running the crappy IBM 75GXP drives in the server
(the made in Hungary ones) that are all doomed to failure.

I suggest, as have others, that you look at a possible hard disk failure.
The only time I have experienced this situation is following a scsi disk
failure. On first reset the disk showed up as failed, a power cycle luckily
got it started. It has now been replaced.

Our exchange 5.5 server with sp4 installed just froze up. It was not
responding to outlook clients and the cursor was not responsive. I had to
resort to the reset button to restart it. Is is possible that a malformed
mail message could have caused this? Is there a post SP4 patch that might
help? This server has never locked up like this in the last 2 years, and
nothing has changed recently.

RE: Outlook 2000 print problem with HTML images

2001-10-22 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

I have not found any 5.5 IE's to try it on. Every machine I have tried has
IE6 and has failed in the same way. This one is very easy to repro - just
make a word file with a bitmap in it and then use the send-as feature. It
will send it as HTML that Outlook will print without the bitmaps.

Well of course the way to solve this is to only insert bitmaps of X's into
all of your Word docs, that way it always prints as expected! ;)

I will have to test this myself another day, but it does say that 5.5 Sp2
corrects this issue. Got any 5.5 installs that you can service pack to check
it out on?

Actually this problem occurs in Outlook 2000 and 2002 (I haven't tried
others). When someone creates a word documents with some words and an
inserted bitmap graphic, and then uses the send to email recipient
feature of word, an HTML version of the document is mailed. This is mostly
ok, since the received document looks OK on the outlook screen. The problem
comes when you try to print the email. The text part prints OK but the
bitmap image part just print the broken link X where the picture should be.
MS has a KB article that sounds just like this:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q271/5/62.ASP?LN=EN-USSD=g
nFR=0qry=html%20printrnk=113src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCHSPR=OUT2K

OL2000: HTML Messages with Pictures Do Not Print Correctly After You Install
Internet Explorer 5.5

Except the machines I tested on all have IE6 on them. One user who has been
doing these emails for months (with no printing problems) just got a new
machine that has win2k/office2k/IE6 on it. Her old machine was win98 with
IE5.x on it (not sure of exact version).

You can see this problem easily for yourself: just create a word document,
type some words in it (so at least something will print) and insert a bitmap
image. Use the send as function to email it and word (or whatever) will
send this in an HTML format. It should display OK but will not print the
graphic no matter what. Not sure what workaround to use yet (except maybe
have the user do a send email as attachment instead).

Warning! New virus spreads just by viewing web page

2001-09-18 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

Blocking EXE's and EML's at your mail server will help some but will not
protect you. We have not had any email copies of this virus, yet two people
got infected just by viewing an infected web page. The exploit attaches the
bad .eml file to the web page, which runs the offending EXE WITHOUT ANY
PROMPTING FROM THE USER. We are now blocking the .eml part in our proxy
server, but in the meantime the two infected machines were trying to copy
the infected EML files to every read/write share they could find on our
internal network. Some curious user would just have to click on one of
those to spread things more.

I think IE6 and the latest service packs for IE5.5 and IE5.01 prevent the
automatic running of the EXE file. I have IE6 here and I got a prompt on my
screen to run or save a TMP file (which I canceled).

Norton says Orginstall.exe is a virus?

2001-09-14 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

Yesterday I loaded the latest 9/13/01 NAV definitions over the old 9/12/01
definitions on our exchange server. When our backup ran at 9:00pm last
night NAV reported (about 34 times) that it had detected the PWS.Cain.dr
virus in
C:\bork\EXCHANGE\ADMIN\INTERORG\ORGINSTALL.EXE (appartently Backup Exec
retries a busy file many times). I'm certain that this is a false
positive as this file has been on the hard drive for years and it gets
scanned every night when the backup runs as well as once a week when a full
NAV scan is run.

RE: New MS tool URLSCAN filters bad URL requests from your IIS (OWA ) server

2001-09-14 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

What does it do? - It filters requests sent to an IIS server so that
potential exploits never make it to the server. For example, the code red
virus worked by requesting a file with a .ida extension from your IIS
server that had a very long string of characters (and then some virus code)
that would overrun a buffer and run the virus instead of processing the
request for the .IDA file. This filter will block many of the known
exploits (that there are already patches for) as well as many new yet-to-be
discovered exploits.

What does this have to do with exchange? -- If you are using the Outlook
Web Access feature of Exchange, then you are running IIS server and you
would need to ensure that this server was not vulnerable to exploits. This
filter is a very good way to help protect an IIS server.

Here is an example of the code red attempts it has blocked since I installed
it yesterday:

Microsoft just released a new IIS utility called URLSCAN which can block
suspicious URL's from your IIS server. You can get it from:

 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=32571

I just installed it on my OWA server (NT4 sp6a, EX5.5 sp4) and it seems to
work fine. It is configured by an INI file which tells it what types of URL
requests to block. Here is the log of it starting up and blocking one
request:

[Thu, Sep 13 2001 - 13:15:10] -- UrlScan.dll Initializing --
[Thu, Sep 13 2001 - 13:15:10] URLs will be normalized before analysis. [Thu,

New MS tool URLSCAN blocks .htr by default - needed for PW chan ge on OWA

2001-09-14 Thread Alverson, Thomas M.

One note about this tool: the default settings in the INI file are set to
block .htr files. These are used by OWA when a user tries to change a
password via OWA. If you are using this feature then you will need to
modify the INI file to allow .htr extensions.

Here is the log of it starting up and blocking one
request:
