It's a fascinating thing -- one would think we could take our anger

IN MMY's worldview, any negative influence would slow the pace of

Dunno. You find research on other meditation techniques of people
reporting 24/7 witnessing for years at a time, or breath suspension
associated with reports of samadhi.

Bet back to me when you do.

Pubmed and the easelan institute's summary of 4 thousand meditation
research studies would be a good place to start.

Enjoy.

Your research is done by TBs within the org. and published by its
own journals - every group has stories of its accomplishments and
superiority. Your group's philosophy values subjective experiences of
witnessing and breath suspension and so that's what the stories
focus on. Other groups may not value those at all within its concept
of enlightenment.

The one TM study that clearly meets objective research criteria and
that I think everyone would view as a positive benefit is reduction of
blood pressure.

There are innumerable studies showing physiological changes associated
with a whole variety of mental practices.

Er, no, it's mostly published in independent journals,
many of them peer-reviewed.

TM's research does need to be *replicated* by
independent researchers, but TM can't force them
to do so. By the same token, the scientific
community can't declare TM's research invalid unless
independent replication has been attempted and
failed.

True, but the question here was the basis on which
TM claims it fosters rapid growth to higher states
of consciousness. You would hardly expect TM to
support that claim in terms of some *other* group's
criteria that TM did not consider valid.

Yay. I wish we could make this a *rule*: Don't
make a higher-order comment about a lower-order
statement UNLESS you make it explicit that you are
doing so and explain what point you want to make
thereby.

I assume Lawson has a reason for pointing to no-self
here, but it would be a lot more helpful if he
explained it.

Too often folks use higher-order comments as a way to
avoid addressing a lower-order statement, and all it
does is introduce confusion and short-circuit the
discussion.

If you have a *reason* for short-circuiting the
discussion in this way, fine, there are occasions
when it's appropriate, IMHO. But *make a case for
doing it*. Don't just use it as a thought-stopper.

Dunno. You find research on other meditation techniques of people
reporting 24/7 witnessing for years at a time, or breath
suspension associated with reports of samadhi.

Your research is done by TBs within the org. and published by its
  own journals

Er, no, it's mostly published in independent journals,
 many of them peer-reviewed.

I was referring specifically to research on witnessing and breath
suspension which I doubt was published in a peer reviewed journal.

In terms of tm research in general in the past 20 yrs, I estimated a
couple yrs ago that about 95% was done by TMO insiders and about 80%
published in TMO publications or just delivered as an address at some
conference, which the TMO incorrectly refers to as published. I
could not find any replication references to any of the studies. This
estimation was done based on a quick look at a TMO website with a long
list of studies.

I'm not saying that some of the findings, esp physiological, aren't
real, but I think someone is very naive to not discount inside tmo
research due to the heavy marketing influence. I've heard from ex mum
professors and ex grad students of the heavy pressure put on mum
researchers to come up with positive results - basically to do the
study over and over and keep changing the statistical analysis until
you get what the university wants to hear. This is esp true with the
maharishi effect work.

Don't be foolish. Nobody is going to be surprised.

Online Etymology Dictionary: surprise (n.)
c.1457, unexpected attack or capture, from M.Fr. surprise a taking
unawares, from noun use of pp. of O.Fr. surprendre to overtake,
from sur- over + prendre to take, from L. prendere, contracted
from prehendere to grasp, seize (see prehensile). Meaning something
unexpected first recorded 1592, that of feeling caused by something
unexpected is 1608. Meaning fancy dish is attested from 1708.

From these definitions it looks pretty clear that somebody is indeed
going to be taken unawares, overtaken, grasped, and seized -- by
Nobody :-)

Don't be misled by the fact that some of the TM
research reference lists give the source of many
studies as the Collected Papers. If you check,
you'll find those are reprints of studies that were
 originally published elsewhere, in independent
journals. And again, the most recent volume of the
Collected Papers was published a decade and a half
ago. No TM research since then, except for *maybe*
a paper or two in Modern Science and Vedic Science,
has been published in a TMO publication.

Oh OK, I assumed Collected Papers was used when there wasn't a better
reference. I'll try to find the website again too as I think we're
talking about a different universe of studies - many of the studies I
saw listed, esp M-effect ones, weren't really published at all but
were simply doctoral theses done by mum students or presentations
given at various conferences. When Hagelin talks about there being 80
something different studies proving the M-effect, he's including the
studies in the list I saw.

A lot of those people are MUm students, not paying regular dome fees. I don't have a real good idea of how many town rus go, but I would guess it's not more than a couple hundred. Also, I'm fairly sure you can still do the 'reduced' fee of $30/month in exchange for some work.

P.S.: Lawson, I'm not saying you asked about no-self
as a thought-stopper. As I said, I assume you did have
a good reason. I'm really just applauding Jim's comment
   in general terms.

I don't buy the no-self claims made about enlightenment.

However, all the things being talked about seemed to be of the
three
gunas persuasion, and I was just wondering who was doing the
three
  gunas thing...

Did I answer your question to your satisfaction?

Notthat I noticed...

Dunno. You find research on other meditation techniques of
people
reporting 24/7 witnessing for years at a time, or breath
suspension associated with reports of samadhi.

Your research is done by TBs within the org. and published by
its
   own journals

Er, no, it's mostly published in independent journals,
  many of them peer-reviewed.

I was referring specifically to research on witnessing and breath
suspension which I doubt was published in a peer reviewed journal.

You're quite wrong.

In terms of tm research in general in the past 20 yrs, I estimated a
couple yrs ago that about 95% was done by TMO insiders and about 80%
published in TMO publications or just delivered as an address at
some
conference, which the TMO incorrectly refers to as published.

Pubmed doesn't list TM journals OR conference proceedings.

 I
could not find any replication references to any of the studies.
This
estimation was done based on a quick look at a TMO website with a
long
 list of studies.

I'm not saying that some of the findings, esp physiological, aren't
real, but I think someone is very naive to not discount inside tmo
research due to the heavy marketing influence. I've heard from ex
mum
professors and ex grad students of the heavy pressure put on mum
researchers to come up with positive results - basically to do the
study over and over and keep changing the statistical analysis until
you get what the university wants to hear. This is esp true with
the
 maharishi effect work.

I'm aware of that regarding the ME stuff thought the DC-ME study was
pretty straightfoward in its statistics. However, the breath
suspension studies are quite acknowledgedly performed on cherry-
picked individuals, so there's no need to hide skewing of research
since its literally built into the design openly. Also, for the
studies done in collaboration with non-MUM/non-TM researchers, and
even the TM/MUM-only stuff done with government grant money, there's
a far greater degree of scientific rigor than the stuff that only
appears at conferences or in Collected Papers volume XX.

Don't be foolish. Nobody is going to be surprised.

 Online Etymology Dictionary: surprise (n.)
c.1457, unexpected attack or capture, from M.Fr. surprise a
taking
unawares, from noun use of pp. of O.Fr. surprendre to overtake,
from sur- over + prendre to take, from L. prendere, contracted
from prehendere to grasp, seize (see prehensile).
Meaning something
unexpected first recorded 1592, that of feeling caused by
something
unexpected is 1608. Meaning fancy dish is attested from 1708.

From these definitions it looks pretty clear that somebody is
indeed
going to be taken unawares, overtaken, grasped, and seized -- by
 Nobody :-)

Or not. My interpretation of witnessing is rather different than many
people's here.

  originally published elsewhere, in independent
journals. And again, the most recent volume of the
Collected Papers was published a decade and a half
ago. No TM research since then, except for *maybe*
a paper or two in Modern Science and Vedic Science,
has been published in a TMO publication.

Oh OK, I assumed Collected Papers was used when there wasn't a
better
reference. I'll try to find the website again too as I think we're
talking about a different universe of studies - many of the studies
I
saw listed, esp M-effect ones, weren't really published at all but
were simply doctoral theses done by mum students or presentations
given at various conferences. When Hagelin talks about there being
80
something different studies proving the M-effect, he's including the
studies in the list I saw.

Sure. However,*I* am only referring to studies available via the
pubmed search engine from the National Institutes of Health:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Database/index.html

Entrez is the integrated, text-based search and retrieval system used
at NCBI for the major databases, including PubMed, Nucleotide and
Protein Sequences, Protein Structures, Complete Genomes, Taxonomy,
and others. Click on the graphic below for a more detailed view of
Entrez integration.

Here's the comprehensive search engine referred to above:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gquery/gquery.fcgi

transcendental meditation yields 235 hits. I assume not all are
positive.

to separate ourselves quickly from bondage to (and identification

best immediately followed by a unitive technique (embracing it in

Don't be misled by the fact that some of the TM
research reference lists give the source of many
studies as the Collected Papers. If you check,
you'll find those are reprints of studies that were
  originally published elsewhere, in independent
journals. And again, the most recent volume of the
Collected Papers was published a decade and a half
ago. No TM research since then, except for *maybe*
a paper or two in Modern Science and Vedic Science,
has been published in a TMO publication.

Oh OK, I assumed Collected Papers was used when there wasn't a
 better reference.

But remember, even if every single last study
had only been published in the Collected Papers
(which is not the case), you'd still have 15
years of research published *after* the last
volume of the Collected Papers.

I'll try to find the website again too as I think we're
talking about a different universe of studies - many of
the studies I saw listed, esp M-effect ones, weren't really
published at all but were simply doctoral theses done by mum
students or presentations given at various conferences.

Yes, there are a number of those in the universe
of studies I'm talking about. You said you thought
*80 percent* of the studies were published in TMO
publications or were never actually published, but
that simply can't be the case. Maybe my estimate
of 10 percent is a bit low, but it's nowhere near
80 percent.

When Hagelin talks about there being 80
something different studies proving the M-effect, he's including the
studies in the list I saw.

Obviously studies of the ME are the least likely
of all the TM studies to find publication in
independent journals, so that's where you're most
likely to find studies on the research lists that
are just dissertations or conference proceedings.

Several, however, *have* been published in peer-
reviewed journals. Those few outweigh all the
others.

Just as a P.S., I am *not* maintaining that every
last TM study is 100 percent valid. I have problems
with quite a few of them, and I have a lot of problems
with how they're used by the TMO.

What I'm interested in is an *accurate* view of the
studies. Your initial claim, that most of them were
published in TMO journals, was simply not accurate.

Isn't this the same as the list of top three money makers for the
 TMO? That's the honest answer:

 --bring in more cows
--get them to buy designer sheds
--feed them our brand of designer feed

(and milk them while you got their attention)

If they start eating other food, facing south or mooing someone

Or at least shun them. Even if you've been friends for someone for 30
years, if that person no longer toes the movement line, their friends
are gone... It's so sad.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. I'm just

one possible explanation.

 No tradition of

You are *so* hung up on established tradition. You
make the assumptions that established tradition
encompasses everything of any value enlightenment-

If it ain't in the book, it doesn't exist, as far as

This seems like good advice if you're into it. Intention seems to be
an equally powerful requirement.

Nonetheless, I was just thinking last night about how the only house
to catch fire in our neighborhood in the last five years had an
eastern facing entrance...

 Feng Shui?

Nope, not a requirement for enlightenment--in fact Feng Shui will
allow you to apply remedies to your existing home/land--not be
required to buy a house from your guru or his contractors.

Feng Shui certainly links habitat shape and orientation
with enlightenment, the comment I was responding to.

For example, from one Web site:

To observe the science and art of Feng Shui means to put oneself and
one's physical placements into the 'right placement' in space and
time in order to receive the beneficial flow of energy from the
universe. At a more subtle level this means that if you are placing
yourself into a situation whereby you can receive the beneficial flow
of the universe then it means you are placing yourself into a
position to receive the opportunity. When we are truly aligned with
our Feng Shui we are aligned on all levels of our being. This means,
physically, emotionally, socially, intellectually and spiritually
aligned to the highest or best potential within our lives.

http://www.fengshui.com.au/html_about/about_destiny.htm

As to building a new house versus adapting an
existing dwelling, you can do either with both
Sthapatya Veda and Feng Shui; but in both cases
better results are said to be obtained if you
start from scratch.

And note that the language used was requirements
for RAPID growth of higher states of consciousness
(emphasis added). It's not that you can't become
enlightened without proper Vastu, but that proper
Vastu *facilitates* enlightenment. Same with Feng
Shui (or so they say).

The idea of being in harmony with the environment
through external as well as internal means is by
no means unique to MMY, and there's usually a
spiritual component to it, or at least there was
originally.

Isn't this the same as the list of top three money makers for the

Group practice of TM and TM-Sidhis is the top money-maker for the TMO?

Enlightenment is the living experience of being fully present;
creating and recreating our reality, moment by moment, and taking
full responsibility for it.

A pragmatic definition for 'higher states of consciousness' are
those states of consciousness that move us towards enlightenment.
So, we can have experiences of 'higher states of consciousness' and
remain unenlightened.

I doubt he believes that--it's just more greed. No
tradition of actual enlightenment that I am aware

 of requires special buildings.

Where the hell does MMY get this stuff from? I agree
with you, there is absolutely no spiritual tradition
in recorded history that links habitat shape and
orientation with enlightenment. It's really goofball
stuff. Enlightment contingent upon the shape and
 orientation of ones house!

The idea of being in harmony with the environment
through external as well as internal means is by
no means unique to MMY, and there's usually a
spiritual component to it, or at least there was
 originally.

I was fortunate, the house I bought was already aligned to true
north. Nonetheless we've done some geomantic alignments and the
appropriate rituals for the place. And that's all I need.

Asanas assist in culturing higher states. As does an AV balanced
diet.
As does keeping regular hours. Are any of these things rquired for
enlightenment? No, of course not. Why do you use the same logic
with SV?

Much more powerful than someone telling us what to do to reach
enlightenment, following our heart and intuition will speed the way
much, much faster! Hint: some of the activities may even be frowned
on by the TMO. Shhh, don't tell 'em I told you...
