Yes, they get some *particles or something from nursing the Mom, but if
they have a strong immune system, they can *throw it off in time* . That is
why I waited so long to get them tested.to give the immune system time to do
that. They say it is transferred in the Mom's milk!

[Felvtalk] ALL KITTENS NEGATIVE !!!! YIPPE !!!!!!!!!

2008-10-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This is a story that I am hoping will give those of you who have a positive
Mom, with a litter of kittens, some hope!

I was told by so many rescues and cat related people and vets etc that
because Mom tested positive, the kitten would no doubt be also.

I was also told by the rescue I am working with, that the loner I could wait
to test them, the better chance they have of *throwing it off* and they get
it in their system from the mom's milk.

Well, on October 13th, they *ALL* tested negative !~
So..there is hope for kittens of positive Mom's !
They were born between June 20th and June 27th, so waiting until October
gave them lots of time... and it worked! Thank goodness.

You can see lots of photos of them and read the story here on my forum. I
have the most gorgeous photos of each one by themselves in the bottom
post The first post has the story about them and videos of them.

Enjoy .it is a wonderful outcome and I hope it encourages
anyone who needs it :) :)

Hi, I am no longer a member here because I have no cats- I amnot allowed to
keep any currently. I rescued a sweet, loving, playful orange tabby kitten.
He followed me 2 blocks from a dumpster where his feral family was living. I
need to find a home for him ASAP!. He has not been tested yet, but I feel he is
most likely FHIV and F leukemia negative. To my understanding, as long as he
gets his vaccines he can not contract leukemia. I live in the piedmont triad
area of NC.
Hi, I have a sweet, very loving and playful orange tabby kitten (male). He
loves attention and all animals (minus pocket pets and birds). I found him at
a dumpster, he followed me 2 blocks. I couldnt leave him because he runs
towards all cats/dogs/other critters and cars. I ask an adoption fee of $55
which will cover his neutering, all shots, deworming, and a flea bath. Litter
free with adoption. He is litter trained. Declawing I find very unneccesscary,
this one does not claw furniture and as long a scratch post is provided it
should bot become a problem. If you really want to meet him, and decide you
want him, I would be happy to do a price check of local vets/clinics for the
cheapest declawing service and pass that info on to you. Please give a call
ASAP if interested as I can not keep him. 336-317-6233

The abandoned Former Grey Tom Cat that I took in and called "Grumpy Gus"
or "Gus" for short, has passed on, this disease is horrible, the list of
issues he had are long. He sounded like two cats fighting when he meows.
He was loved, inside, well fed and had Vet care, unlike so many that do
not in the care of Companions.

Please add him to Mondays list please.

Unfortunately, I can not keep them if they test positive. Based on your
estimates, when we saw her skinny, when she brought them to us, their weight
when we first weighed them etc, put the birth of the kittens around June
20th -June 27th. So, they are around 3 months old now.

They go for their spaying and FL tests on Monday and if they are positive,
there is no where for them to go and they will have to be put down.

If they test negative, they will go to Pet Smart or the rescue can take
them.

When Gus my SNAP tested once positive male, was not eating, just lying
around, but no major signs of illness. I feed him Gerber meat baby food
with KMR and lysine powder mixed in. He wolfed it down and got over what
appears to have been a viral URI of a mild nature. He is now back to his
old self, tearing up the newspaper lining his cage, vocalizing all the
time. I think it was a combination of a mild viral URI and his being
depressed about being in a cage for half a day. So when I was hand
feeding him the baby food, he got the attention he was seeking, so I am
still feeding him baby food with lysine mixed in.

[Felvtalk] Felv Testing Interval for kittens

2008-07-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Could someone remind me of the age when testing kittens for Felv is. I
have some 8 week old kittens, Miss'Tache, Gilbert, Perry, and Eeyore,
born to a feral queen, queen is untested. My rescue group wants to test
them real soon.

I also have former tom cat who has tested positive for Felv via a snap
test, he is in a different room from the kittens and from my cats. As of
right now he is not showing any symptoms. He is a sweetheart, I think he
is a dumped cat left to fend for himself.

Greetings Again

2008-06-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Greetings Again,

I have not been very active here since the passing of my LeLV cat Elric
Whiteybone. Since then I have been active in cat rescue.

Recently I have lost another cat to this disease, he came to our back
porch, and rubbed between my wifes legs. He was more than friendly, but
he had a full mucus mustache on his face.

He tested positive for LeLV but not FIV, the respiratory infection which
was giving him his mucus mustache did not respond to any of the 5+
antibiotics we used on him. We named him Gio short for Giovanni.

With in two weeks the disease did it work on his body along with the
respiratory infection. On a Saturday we took him to our Rescue Groups
Veterinarian.

We got there way early and were able to spend over an hour with him there.

When the Veterinarian got there, she asked if this was our kitty or a
rescue kitty. We responded he was a rescue kitty and that we were
staying with him while his time came.

So while the Veterinarian gave him the meds to ease his passing, my wife
and I were holding and touching him. We both felt him relax then go
totally limp. After a bit the Vet listened for his heart, and said he
was gone.

We spent another 15 minutes with him. Later the Vet came in and asked
what we wanted to do with Gio's body. We replied that we already had
place dug for him in our back yard by our porch and the catnip bush that
grew nearby. She seemed taken a back that we were doing this for a
rescue kitty. I believe she got her eyes opened about those that rescue
cats/kitties.

We took him home and placed him in the spot we prepared for him.

We have been putting food out of the strays in our neighborhood, getting
them snipped and returned.

We recently heard a sound while we were eating breakfast coming from our
back patio. It sounded like two male cats squaring off to fight. When we
looked it was a single domestic short haired Gray male cat.

We named him Gus as in Grumpy Gus. He was at first a bit shy, but later
became much easier to handle. We spoke to our rescue group about him,
offered to foster him, they said they would pay for his testing and
snipping if we fostered him.

Well the news from the testing was not good, it was the SNAP test and by
that test he was positive for LeLV. We have him in a separate bedroom
where he gets his love and food.

I am wondering if any here have any experience with the various immune
system enhancing drugs/compounds.

I want to boost his immune system so he has a chance to throw off the
infection prior to his next series of tests. As of right now he has no
symptoms of any disease.

Re: Question about URI contagion

2007-11-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
in persians, who are predisposed to uri symptoms at any time, especially
in shelter or new situations (stress, no noses to speak of anyway),
zithromax has become the drug of choice: we don't even bother with the
others for cats we pull from shelters, we just go for the zithro.

the other thing is that there's many causes for runny noses and goopy
eyes, and unless you actually culture out the emissions, you can't be
sure what you're dealing with--might just be that kitty's reaction to
stress, might be allergies , might be a virus or bacteria. so once
they're responding and feeling better and want to play with the others,
i figure that's the best medicine as long as they aren't sneezing
constantly!

thing had started to rub off the fur around his one eye from rubbing
at it so much. I had this same kitten back at labor day for about 3
weeks when I took in 4 kittens who all had URIs in various degrees of
severity. He was the oldest and he got well the fastest after
treatment with Amoxy and Terramycin. Well, when he was added to the
"condo" at the store to be "on display" for adoption, I guess the
stress of that shortly thereafter brought the eye problems back and
he's been suffering off and on since then. I tried to stop by as
much as possible to clean and treat his eyes, but it's hard b/c the
store closes at 6:00. He is also one of those cats "prone" to tear
stains regardless of a URI and with the white fur on his face, he
looks really bad being on display with tear stains and eye funk (he
looked sick- which looks bad for our no-kill agency), so I decided to
take him home and put in him the downstairs room and just not mix him
at all with my other two fosters Yoda and LeeRoy. Well, I've had him
since last Sat. and this time, he's on Clavamox (and Terramycin in
the eyes) and I'm feeding him tons of wet food (Wellness kitten)-
they only get dry at the store- and pumping him full of supplements.
He gets to run around the house when I am home b/c the other foster
kittens have a big room to romp, so they stay closed in there and
away from him But, I know he's lonely and needs some
kitty-socialization and he and Yoda may remember each other! He's
doing SO MUCH better- it's unreal. I know it's probably mostly
because he is having fun, not stressed, eating like a piggy and
getting love (that probably helps more than the meds...sigh). *So,
if he is no longer having inflamed red eye tissue and green
discharge, is he okay to mingle now? He's not sneezing and he
doesn't really have any eye discharge at all*, besides his regular
eye boogers that he is prone to getting. He does not act like a sick
cat (runs around like a maniac). I haven't seen green eye funk since
the day after I brought him home (Sunday) b/c he improved almost
instantly. I just wanted to know if anyone knows if he's been on the
antibiotic almost a week now, & showing no signs of infection, can he
be mingled with the other two kittens for play-time, or should I wait
longer?

Thanks,
Caroline

Well, Tigger is doing better. He is not vomitting anymore and he has been

have been putting it on top of the dry innova cat food so that way he does eat
some of the good food. Need ideas on good cat wet food for Tigger. He does

Another thing I would like advice on is for a friend's cat. She has very dry,

amount of white bllood cells, so she was put on interfron and vitamins. She
had her ups and downs but finally wed June 16 I made the decision to have her
put down. She was howling (loud and painful) all night and she could not walk.
She could not even hold her head straight. Tsunade was only about a year and
a half old. She was my only kitty. I dont know if I will be able to get a

Re: OT - animal communication - please just delete without reading.

2007-06-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
"And the thought that perhaps we need to ask the cats in question what they
would prefer when death is a serious option."

The idea that any of you actually BELIEVE that anyone can psychically
communicate with an animal is, to me, ABSURD. I think the "animal
communication" business is a FRAUD taking advantage of people and their love
of their pets (and often, their weakened mental status because of
desperation and stress). There may actually BE good people out there who
REALLY believe they communicate with animals... people who are not frauds,
people with good hearts, but out of touch with reality. I'm not saying ALL
AC's are just out to make a buck or gain fame, but really, you can't PROVE
this stuff exists, and it's proven fact that other humans WILL take
advantage when given a chance! Anyone remember snake oil? HELLO?!

You know what? This list has of recent had SO MANY emails about animal
communication, that it seems to be THE answer to EVERYTHING! I just can't
fathom the emotional susceptibility of a person to actually believe in
something so FAR OUT THERE and so obviously unable to be proven. And to put
an animals LIFE, or the question of PHYSICAL MUTILATION, on the line based
on what could just as well be as valid as flipping a coin, well, it's just
unfathomable, I just can't come up with any other word for it! It's like a
NEW RELIGION... You can't see, it, you can't prove it, you can't feel it,
you can't do anything to prove it exists, yet you just blindly throw your
faith into it, and put everything you own in your heart into this belief in
the unprovable!

I JUST DO NOT GET IT !

In my opinion, all the talk of animal communication on this list has made
it's validity LAUGHABLE in the past year. This used to be a place where
people could come get answers based in REAL EXPERIENCE and scientific
studies, and it was a place to come to for education on the scientific facts
behind FELV (among other feline health topics) and answers to questions
about MEDICINE. This used to be a place where when a vet was not so helpful,
an owner could come here and ask questions and leave feeling like they got
solid, helpful, and scientific advice and treatment options. There has been
more talk of psychic communication, afterlife, prayer, and other crap (for
lack of a better word) here in the past year than there has been talk of the
actual REAL facts of FELV. I learned SO MUCH here in the past 6 years that I
made an entire WEBSITE out of that info. In the past year, I honestly think
I've learned maybe 2 or 3 things here, and the rest has just been loads of
fantastical blind FAITH in NOTHING!

I'm leaving.. again... I'll be back... later. I always come back,
eventually. I can only HOPE that while I am gone, people will get a GRIP on
reality, and pull their heads out of la-la land! If you want to change my
mind, if you think I am wrong, I openly invite anyone of you (or your pet
psychics) to send me a SIGN. I'll be sitting here waiting for the sounds of
heralding angels "Ahhh!" (cue the organ music) and beams of bright
light and spirits floating around in the room with me. I'll be awaiting
little kitties with wings taking flight by my head, lighting on my shoulder,
whispering "Meow do you believe in us?" in my ear, while it rains glittery
pixie dust in my room. Please send them my way. Maybe I can ask them, while
they are here, the meaning of life, why there is suffering in the world, and
when will we ever know world peace.

Someone please email Michelle, and let her know I am gone, and that it's
safe to come back now.

Beth, it's not my "never declaw ideal" that made me say that, it is my
genuine belief that declawing causes long term physical and psychological
suffering, and I do not think putting a suffering cat through more things to
make it suffer more is a correct course of action. Two wrongs don't make a
right. Declawing is 100% cruel and inhumane, and euthanasia is 100% humane
when done correctly. To me, there is no gray area there, it's black and
white. To eliminate suffering, yes, I will euthanise an animal. I do not
have those strong no-kill ideals others have these days. My son bites his
fingernails until they bleed sometimes... would I ever THINK to even
consider amputating his fingers to solve that problem? True, it WOULD
completely eliminate the problem, and his self-mutilation, but at what cost?
That's how I feel about it. That's just me, personally. I'd like to see a
$1000 fine and mandatory 90 days in jail for felony animal cruelty for
anyone that has a cat declawed - that and the revoking of veterinary
licenses for any vet that does the surgery. But I admit, I'm totally way on
one side of the fence on declawing - probably to the point of being
impractical and even a bit of a lunatic.

I found some WONDERFUL upholstery cleaner stuff, in the CAR section, no
less! Gets stains out of anything I've tried so far, it's amazing stuff.
It's by TurtleWax, and it's a big red and yellow aerosol can with a bristle
plastic cap on it. It's called Power Out! Professional strength upholstery
cleaner (with odor eliminating Odor-X). You spray it on, and it's a thick
FOAM, let it sit for about a minute, then rub it in with a clean cloth.
Continue to spray a dab more and rub with a clean cloth (use clean areas of
the cloth, or a new one every few wipes), and it will erase the stain. The
only problem I've found is that the clean area is noticeable because it's SO
MUCH cleaner than the parts I didn't clean. This stuff made my 1994 model
car's upholstery look LIKE NEW (and it completely eliminated the spilt
sardine juice odor).

Personally, I will euthanise Mythic if I think he's suffering so much that I
am considering something as drastic as declawing. His allergies ARE
manageable with Dexamethisone injections though, so I do have something I
can resort to when it gets really bad. I would take him to a feline
dermatologist before I considered declawing or euthanasia. There are very
involved and specific allergy tests that can be done, and once they get
those results, they can begin allergy shots. I've gotten all the info in the
past, but it's so costly I keep putting it off. He's only like this a few
months max out of the year though... if it were a food allergy year-round, I
would probably invest that money into the specialist. There's a good
veterinary dermatologist specialist in New Hampshire. If you want to find
one in your area, there is a "find a veterinary dermatologist near you"
webpage from their association, I can find the link and post it if anyone is
interested.

leftovers (and things that were duds for Mythic's issues) on myself, and I
have found that one called Relief, by DVM made MY itchy scalp feel great,

Re: OT - my moral ideas behind claw trimming

2007-06-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
First off, I carbon copied this to the FELVOT list, so we can take this
discussion over there, please reply ON THAT GROUP, not on this list:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/felvot/

Well, for one, I have NEVER seen an ingrown claw on a cat. Given proper
scratching surfaces (natural wood, sisal rope, carpet - and sofas, LOL)
cats' claws naturally shed periodically. The older, outside sheath sloughs
off much like a snake sheds it's skin, leaving a sharper and shorter fresh
claw underneath it. It's been my experience that EVERY time I have ever seen
a cat get it's claws trimmed (like when I took one in to be spayed, or
neutered, or had dental work, etc), there is some amount of splintering of
the outside claw sheath, which causes premature sheath shedding. When the
claw splits and tries to fall off the cat before it is "ready", it can (and
in my experience, USUALLY, starts at the tip, and begins to loosen from the
tip up towards the cuticle. I've seen many times where the claw sheath was
hanging from JUST the cuticle, but wasn't ready to come off, snagging on
things, and actually causing my cat discomfort. Attempts to gently pull it
off resulted in YOWLS and jerking away, thus I came to the conclusion that
it is painful for the cat. I cannot see inducing ANY amount of unnecessary
pain on my cats, thus, I am morally opposed to claw trimming, based on my
past experiences. Yes, I have scars, yes, I have had cuts that bled for
hours and hours, and through several band-aids. My cats come first, though,
IMO. I do not believe there is any reason to trim cat claws, outside of
human vanity and convenience, but I am OPEN to the possibility that it may
be true that ingrown claws could exist - I have just never seen it myself,
and my opinions are based on what I can back up with personal experience and
personally proven fact (in other words, my opinions are based on what I have
seen with my own two eyes). Maybe your Persians, in addition to having
human-induced deformed faces, also have human-induced deformed feet, leading
to a higher ingrown claw factor (me thinks maybe human breeding programs are
at the root of most cat-evil in the world)???

Oh, and yes, any cat can have an electrolyte imbalance, but giving too many
fluids can cause it, definitely. The balance is very delicate. I never
really understood why cats and dogs don't get routine electrolyte
supplements like all other mammals do when ill or over-worked. Think
pedalyte for human babies - gatorade for human adults, they make similar
stuff for supplementing livestock (horses) and it's routine to give it after
any competition or in illnesses. But cats and dogs don't seem to get these
things. I don't understand why not. Maybe there is a reason I am unaware of.

It's not bad yet this year, we are hoping it wont flare up as more plants
begin to bloom in summer. I'm considering soft paws for his back paws, so he
can't do so much self-damage this year if it does flare up. The problem is
that he is very independent, and I will probably have to take him to the vet

Think I would stick with the carrot juice or leave the veggies out all

Tomatoes can be toxic to cats:
  http://cats.about.com/cs/catfood/a/humanfood.htm

Tomatoes, Green (raw Potatoes)

These foods are members of the Solanaceae family of plants, which
includes the Deadly Nightshade, and contain a bitter, poisonous alkaloid
called Glycoalkaloid Solanine, which can cause violent lower
gastrointestinal symptoms. The Feline Future web site offers a rare
description of a cat which was close to death from ingesting just one cherry
tomato.

Tomatoes and tomato plants: Tomatoes of all kinds are toxic to cats, as

cause severe gastrointestinal upset.

put just a dab IN the spoon and get her to lap it out of the spoon (rather
than licking the stuff that's clinging to the back of it)? If she wont do
that, you might have better luck with a wood Popsicle stick, as more of the

Re: Anyone have experience with respiratory distresslikelycausedbyanemia?

2007-06-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Yes, true, but my suggestion of Depo and Dex would also be a good choice
even if it is lymphoma-related respiratory distress. I stand by my
recommendation... go to the vet, get on oxygen immediately, then consider
treating with steroids - even if you don't know what is exactly the cause.

Phaewryn

That is true, but respiratory distress in a cat should never ever be
ignored. This cat just sounds so compromised and ill that I would at least
consider that this might be irreversible and signaling the end. I
certainly don't wish that on anyone and not this poster or her cat, but
having just had a perfectly healthy (other than FELV+) cat develop what
initially seemed to be an URI and then to have him crash within days, open
mouth breathe, and nearly die on the way to the ER vet (who then put him in
the oxygen tent only to see him NOT get any relief) and to later (after PTS)
discover that it was lymphoma, I am very sensitive to this. I saw my Herbie
struggle to breath, I heard him yowl in pain, and remember how just weeks
ago, my vet said he was in pain...

I've had other, small FELV+ kittens go into this type of distress as well,
that was the signal (in those cases) that we were beyond repair.

I truly hope this can be resolved and the cat made better. Please keep us
posted.

I know there have been other members here who lost cats in respiratory
distress. Personally, if it has been on-going, but not worsening, I would go
to the vet where the cat could be put in an oxygen cage for a while and
treated (possibly with steroids like Dexamethasone or Depomedrol, or both).
It's certainly not a sure sign of the end, by any means. Yes, sometimes it
does happen that way, but then there are also many causes of respiratory
distress, most of which ARE treatable.

Please add our cat Scamper of 18 years to the CLS list. He lost his

will be be still alive.

He will be cremated, and then when my wife passes his ashes will join hers.

He was the kitten that did not stay down stairs in the box we made for
him. He jumped/climbed up the stairs to our bedroom, jump/climbed up the
comforter on our water bed to sleep with us.

and digs out through the bottom of the bag, and out he pops! He loves it,

Re: Question about FIV/FeLV+ Mom and Kittens

2007-05-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Add lysine to their diet. You can also try interferon, but you'll need a vet
for that. Honestly, I would not separate the kittens like you have done.
What you are seeing now (test results) can change at any time, and it seems
like a lot of extra work, kinda pointlessly, to me. They will either have,
or not have, both one or the other, or neither, what you're seeing now is
not going to tell you much of anything. You should also supplement momma as
well, as it's never too late for HER to throw off the viruses either!

Re: Prednisone - Thank You

2007-05-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The cat with the ear tumor would be MUCH better off long-term by having the
ear removed than by being on pred long-term. There is a very involved, but
effective total ear abalation surgery that removes the entire ear canal,
including the inner and outer ear, and usually leaves a normal looking ear
flap, but if the tumor involves the flap, you could take that as well. If
it's only on the flap, of course, that's VERY easy to remove.

I have not heard of Pred being used for seizures, but I could be wrong
there.

The extreme nasal discharge you are describing sounds like it began as a
Herpes outbreak, or possibly Calici, and has since turned into a bacterial
nasal infection in some of your cats. I would advise stronger or different
antibiotics if you are not seeing improvement within 1 week of starting your
current antibiotics. Another thing worth trying is testing the mucous for
fungal infection, which often is something that is overlooked unless the
owner specifically requests it be checked for.
Here is a lab service that can test for most URI issues:
http://www.zoologix.com/dogcat/Datasheets/FelineRespiratoryPanel.htm
But, I would consider also doing a fungal test, at least for the most common
nasal fungal infection, Cryptococcosis, as it is a serious issue if left
untreated (the fungus can eat out the bones in the face if left to fester -
it can also lead to some of the other symptoms you mentioned in your other
cats, like blindness, and seizures - it's all around a NASTY thing that
should be seriously considered if antibiotics do not help).

Re: Prednisone?

2007-05-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dog food and milk will LEAD TO BLINDNESS IN CATS. It does not contain
TAURINE, an amino acid which cats require. Taurine deficiency in cats leads
to BLINDNESS. So, basically, EVERY cat at that dairy farm will be blind
eventually. The kindest thing you could do is DONATE the dairy farm bags of
cat food to feed the cats. I do that here in my area, as I also live in a
very rural area with lots of dairy farm cat dumping. It is quite possible
this cat has lived at the diary farm for a while, and recently lost his
sight due to the diet they are eating there. He probably wandered off into
the fields where you found him to die. I would advise you to try to educate
the farmers that run that farm, but I know from experience they don't often
respond well to that. Try GIVING them cat food. That would be the only
solution I can see.

Usually cats that lose their vision due to taurine deficiency never recover
their vision, despite treatment. I do not think Pred is a treatment for URI
at all, but I could be wrong. It's a steroid used for inflammation,
primarily. I suppose it could be of use in sinus infections if there is
nasal tissue swelling causing congestion. Perhaps you are thinking of it to
treat the eyes? Are the eyes inflamed, or is he just blind? Like I said,
pred is for inflammation, but usually NOTHING helps with blindness caused by
taurine deficiency. Try a stronger antibiotic, like Zithromax, which has
been discussed recently on this list (see archives for the past few days).
Pred is usually avoided if possible due to it causing Diabetes in felines.

Reader's digest would love that story, I bet, especially after you get your
kitty back and there's a happy ending!

For future reference, and to everyone else on the list, please don't use
"cat" figure 8 style harnesses. They have a DESIGN FLAW and cannot possibly
be trusted to ever hold a squirming panicked cat! The way they function
means that there is no way to make them secure. I better option is a good
sturdy nylon PUPPY collar, preferably 5/8 inch wide, and out it on so it is
TIGHT, so you can barely get your finger under the collar. For cats that
can't stand just a collar, and that need to disperse some of the weight to
the abdomen, a H style harness is a MUCH better option than a figure 8
style. An H style has a solid neck strap collar and a solid chest/belly
band, attached by a connector strap that connects the two over the top of
the cat's back with a d ring on top to attach the leash. The neck strap part
should be adjusted like a collar, TIGHT but not choking the cat, so it
cannot go over the cats head if they pull back against it. The chest strap
can be looser as it's just there to distribute some of the pulling force off
the neck. This is the SAFE type of cat harness:
http://www.willasark.com/lupineharness.cfm

Everytime I see a store with a figure 8 cat harness, I cringe at the thought
of how insecure they are!

I hope you find your baby!

Re: OT- Cheap source of Zithromax?

That's the problem, the warning is buried in two pages of TINY text in the
package insert. Not even the vets bother to read it:
http://www.revolution4cats.com/docs/pdf/FullInfill.pdf

My favorite flea product is a shampoo by Zodiac called fleatrol. It's a
shampoo, and it kills fleas and ticks while on the pet, but it doesn't
absorb into their skin like flea repellants do, so when you rinse it off,
all the toxic chemicals are GONE. That being said, the label still reads
"not for use on sick, weak, or debilitated animals or those under 12 weeks
of age. There are new "natural" flea shampoos out there that may be better
for weak or young cats/kittens. I use this Zodiac flea shampoo on MYSELF
after hiking to kill any ticks I may have picked up on the trail. I feel
safe using it on my cats because I use it on myself too. Anything that has
bold text warnings that say "wear gloves when applying, and wash thoroughly
if contact with skin occurs" are NOT GOOD, because this is stuff you plan to
put on your PET'S skin, and LEAVE on there! I mean, think about it, like -
DUH! It's the whole double standard we have for humanity verses everything
else, what's good for them isn't necessarily what's good for US too. After
all, they are JUST animals. (rolling eyes)

I'm going to see what I can turn up for use on younger kittens and cats
under 2 LBS.

Re: New Member - Deb and mixing

2007-05-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Every "what if" I have experienced in the past brought me to a new awareness
in the present, even though the lessons were hard, I learned from them.
"What if" I had just taken that extra few minutes to check on Kiki that
night, rather than going to bed because I was too tired to feed him? Would I
have been able to take him to the vet in time to save him? That was a hard
lesson, when I found him dead the next morning with injuries. BUT, now, when
I think something might be wrong, I take action on it IMMEDIATELY, I never
wait to take care of things I could put off until tomorrow, because I
learned that sometimes tomorrow doesn't come. "What if" I had just not let
him go outside? Would he have not been hit by that car? Of course not. BUT,
now I keep my cats indoors only, unless they are on a leash. I learned from
that "what if" as well. What if I had only KNOWN that a broken back wasn't a
death sentence? Would I still have my sweet Do-Dah here today, happy in a
cat cart? I miss him, but now I know that it's not a death sentence, and
I've used the lesson I learned from his life to help countless injured pets
since by telling THEIR owners "don't listen to your vet, there ARE options!"
I have Bones to show for it too, I think it was a test, that I was to be
sent not one, but TWO cats with broken backs. The first one, I got it wrong,
but the second one... well, she couldn't be any happier than she is today! I
swear to you all, I am SURE that I have been sent these "second chances"
just to redeem myself and forgive my past mistakes! I could list a long list
of all the "what if's" I've experienced in my years with cats, all my
regrets, and all of my losses, but the fact remains the same, no matter HOW
HARD that lesson came, and no matter how many times I relive it, and no
matter how many tears I shed, I know that I LEARNED, and THAT means that
none of their lives were in vain.

Re: question on test result

2007-05-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
My thoughts about FELV and euth'ing them just because of the test results
are this:

Isn't every moment in life a moment for a discovery, a moment to find joy, a
moment to know what it is to be loved? Is it fair for us to take ANY of
those moments away from any living thing just because they MIGHT later get
sick and die? True, many FELV+ cats do eventually get sick and die or have
to be put down, BUT, I think life is better measured by it's QUALITY rather
than it's QUANTITY! Even short lives can be filled with happiness, love, and
joy. Just because something is short-lived, doesn't mean it's not worth
experiencing. EVERY life has a purpose, everything is here for a reason, and
all the creatures that enter our lives are here to teach us something. I've
said it before, and I will quote it again, from Moogie's memorial page:

In Memory Of Moogie

I can look back and know that even though she only lived just over a year,
she had all of the good experiences any cat could have in a lifetime, she
just did it a little faster than most.

Sickly kitties give more love.

I hope everyone opens their heart to a sickly kitty and gives it the best
life possible.

Sickly kitties need more love, more time, more attention, and more
devotion, but they give it all back to you. Sickly kitties snuggle up under
your covers at night because they have a hard time staying warm on their
own. Sickly kitties trust you 100%, because sickly kitties know that you
crawl on your hands and knees on the way to the toilet in the middle of the
night just so you don't step on the sickly kitty stretched across the hall
way floor that doesn't have enough energy (or desire) to move out of your
way. Sickly kitties know that if suddenly their food begins to taste bad and
they don't want to eat it any more, you will go to the grocery store and buy
them a carton of light cream and some ham lunch meat. Sickly kitties know
that sudden trips to the vet to get rehydrated because mom had to be at work
for 8 hours and couldn't be home to force feed water 3 cc's at a time are
the norm, and no work schedule is more important than rehydrating the sickly
kitty. Sickly kitties know that even though they feel really bad, in a few
days mom will make it all better again, and they can enjoy a few more weeks
under the covers with mom at night, a few more weeks walking across mom's
keyboard on the weekends. Sickly kitties know that mom never lies, mom never
ignores them, and mom never puts them in second place. In the end, sickly
kitties know that mom will be there and hold them and tell them everything
is OK, and that it's OK to go to sleep, and as they close their eyes and let
go, sickly kitties know that mom loves them, and always will, and mom knows
the love is a mutual feeling.

Sure, it hurts, but I get a lot in return for my efforts, it makes me feel
good inside, and that's the best feeling in the world. I have no regrets.
Life is a roller coaster of emotion, you might as well be in the front seat
where the view is good, and the wind is in your face.

"I don't think the law requires the vet to give it. The pet is
required to have it regardless, which would make the responsibility
fall on me."

In that case, order the vaccine online, pull it up into a syringe, and
squirt it down the toilet, and call the cat "vaccinated". No-one can say you
DIDN'T give it to the cat! You have the sales receipt to "prove" you bought
it (you can even save the bottle and the packaging)! I think
http://jefferspet.com still sells rabies vaccines.

There are slight positives and strong positives. That is true, however, this
vet is crazy, even allowing that she is right about that! You took an
INJURED cat to her, and she did NOTHING to treat the INJURIES, but instead
let the cat sit in a cage suffering for 4 hours and then the ONLY thing she
did was a FELV test? No wonder the cat DIED THERE! Personally, I would
report her to the state veterinary board for malpractice (and the local SPCA
or humane society for cruelty)!

no tests on the kittens, and let he's advocating euth? He's NUTS. Period.
NO, that's not the right thing to do, and NO that's not the usual course of

The vet I worked for use super glue exclusively instead of tissue glue. In
fact, we once ran out in the middle of puppy dew claw removal, and I had to
run to the store and buy a tube! It's also a great thing to have on hand in
any human emergency kit for the same reason. I use it all the time to glue
down "hangnails" and to close my papercuts.

Revolution almost killed a member's cat here a few years back, it's totally
NOT recommended for underweight, weak, sick, or debilitated cats or kittens.
We were even successful at having the internationally distributed label
changed to reflect that fact, as only their US label said that warning (it's
called a different brand overseas - but it's the same product). Just wanted
to mention it, since you said they treated momma cat with it at the shelter.
I would never use it on a pregnant cat, even if the label says it's OK.
