You should be able to get Eclipse and asdt working pretty easily.
osflash.org is the place to look for open source tools for Actionscript
programming.

Now, I found that there are no editors which supports an AS 1.0 as
well as AS 2.0 and is free. Here is a list of editors I used
according in order as I've used them:

Scite - absolutely great one to write AS 1.0, it's free and don't
use a lot of CPU resources even if you open a lot of files.

FlashDevelop - for most of people it's a favorite choice, but it
lacks a lot of futures opposite to other ones which are older. It's a
freeware and great to write AS 2.0 only.

PrimalScript - a great one for AS 1.0 and AS 2.0, but it lacks some
of features that FDT have and it's commercial not free.

FDT - must be the choice for all who write a code using AS 2.0, in
any other cases - don't use it! It is commercial and quite expensive.
As far as I know there is no AS 3.0 support and it is quite difficult
to set it up for the very first time for a newbie. The number of
features it has for AS 2.0 is amazing!

Sepy - can hold AS 2.0 and AS 1.0, and both of them works great! I
use the last experimental version and it's really stable on my PC.
Due to this time there is lack of updates and it seems that the
developers in some kind of an idle :) Once they made a new version
each week. Personally I prefer to use this editor because it is
located in the middle regarding the features and have a great support
of both versions of AS, it's free and because I have a lot of old
projects in both versions I prefer to work with it.

Forgive me if this has already been asked, but I didn't see anything
 in the archives.

I'm new to Flash development and am working on both server and client
side code (FMS 2.0 and Flash 7+). As someone who's used to doing Java
development using Netbeans I find the Flash IDE very lacking for
client side development, and there doesn't seem to be any IDE for FMS.

Does anyone on this list know of a good alternative IDE for Flash?
I've found a lot of references to using Eclipse but I haven't been
able to get the plugin to work correctly.

I'm specifically looking for something that can handle both
Actionscript 1 and 2 and can still use the Flash 8 devel environment
for the actual builds (I can't use MTASC). Unfortunately it will also
have to be free, as I don't think I'll be able to get the company to
buy an IDE for me to use. :(

Is there anything out there I can use, or am I out of luck? Right now
I'm just using Vim for editing the files themselves and switching to
Flash 8 for building, but the lack of any kind of project management
 is getting annoying.

 Thanks!

That's the one I tried, but I couldn't get it to function. For
instance, when I went to try and add my files it couldn't see my
filesystem for some very strange reason. There were a couple other
problems as well, but I don't remember them off the top of my head.

So far FlashDevelop seems to be pretty good, but I've only used it
briefly so far (working on AS 1.0 code at the moment). It doesn't
have some features I'd like (like in Netbeans where I can Ctrl-click
on something and have it go to that function/object's definition or
find usages) but it's much better than anything else. Now if only I
could figure out how to change the syntax highlighting color scheme to
match what I use in everything else...

That's odd. Ben Jackson uses it exclusively and has it tied to MTASC
and Subversion. He never has to open the Flash IDE. Have you seen some
of the macros videos out there? I know firsthand that the learning
curve can be a little steep, but if you take the time to learn the
program in and out, the benefits are outstanding.

FDT has been the best thing that I've been able to find for coding AS2
on the Mac. I like Eclipse as I use it for Java development as well.
Anyway, auto completion, some minor refactoring features and
integration with Ant and version control make it a hell of a tool.

It does cost money though and does have a few bugs, but overall it has
been totally worth it.

Just my two cents. Take it or leave it.

Sometimes I mess with the bundle to see if I can make it work better,

This makes TextMate a better-than-average text editor, but not much

RE: [Flashcoders] Alternative IDE for Flash Devel

2006-10-17 Thread Kurt Dommermuth

Hi,

I think this has been pretty much said, but after having recently explored
AS editor options I'd like to give my take.

First, your needs are going to be based on how you work. I do a lot of
scripting but I also mix in some hand animations and other frame based stuff.

I'm not developing apps.

My primary objective for using an external editor is to keep
organized. That means smart Code folding. Second I want code
validation. third, I want to compile from the editor. Maybe all of the
following are capable, but only one was intuitive and made it easy to
accomplish these objectives. I mean, within minutes.

Scite: Ok but I was frustrated that I couldn't just click to close an open
file. no right click either? You have to go to the top level menu. Code
folding was good. Coudn't find code validation. Couldn't compile. Maybe
it was all there, but not intuitive. I dumped it.

Primal Script. Not great code folding. It wouldn't save folds. I asked
in the forums. no solution. Plus of course it costs a few bucks. I dumped
it right there.

Eclispe/FDT. What a mess to configure. It may be as powerful as everyone
says, but it's pretty much worthless for my needs. And frankly, I suspect
my needs are more typical of the average flasher. There are a lot of
sophisticated programers on this list, god bless you all, but I don't think
they represent your average flasher. To much work. To much time wasted
setting it up. Dumped it. $$ (which btw, if something is worth it, I be
glad to shell out).

Dreamweaver. won't save code folding. stopped trying it right there.

Sepy. I'm happy with Sepy. Simple. Problem solved. Set up and continued
doing my work in minutes.

I was just checking out the build options for a project in FlashDevelop,
and it seems you can set it to compile with MTASC and/or inject code -
so if that's true, would there be any reason to use FLASC when you're
just writing code with FlashDevelop?

I think some like to make a clean build compiled with the official
compiler to publish the project when they're done. Why? I don't know.
Maybe a final check if it compiles in case somebody else will have to
work on it who doesn't know of MTASC. But it shouldn't be necessary,
MTASC usually is stricter than the MMC (or is it now AC -- Adobe
Compiler?), especially if you use --strict.

Just to throw in my setup:
I use Eclipse with EHX [1]. EHX is still in very early development, so
some of the luxury of the more mature IDEs is missing, but there isn't
much choice for haXe [2] IDEs yet -- especially if you can't run
FlashDevelop since it's Windows-only, but here is a haXe plugin for
it, too.

You should also check out FLASC, a Flash panel MTASC compiler that is basically
an easy to use GUI for MTASC. I often find myself with FlashDevelop and the
Flash IDE open when making tests or working on projects with heavy design. I
can make a code change in FD, hit the compile button in FLASC and it launches
the SWF instantaneously within the IDE with all the benefits of doing so. I
also have the flexibility to make physical changes to the Flash file and
recompile in Flash because it's already open.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TextMate
If you're a Mac user you should really check out TextMate. It's by and large
the best coding tool out there and until FlashDevelop came out, it was better
than any windows text editor. I don't know any coders on the mac who are
without it whether they code Java, Rails, PHP, C++, HTML, Javascript,
Actionscript what have you. It's quite simply an unbelievable application and
worth the paltry $35 or whatever it costs. It has customizable code completion
and insanely cool macros you can create that make coding a breeze.

On the downside for TextMate, the out-of-the-box experience is not
very good. The built-in bundle seems compelling, however its features
are broken, and as it is a third-party bundle, it does not appear to
be maintained.

Sometimes I mess with the bundle to see if I can make it work better,
but haven't had much luck. I don't program perl, for one thing. I
don't think that should be a requirement for improving AS development
workflows.

This makes TextMate a better-than-average text editor, but not much
to rave over regarding an improved actionscript workflow under OSX.

2006-10-16 Thread The Helmsman
I think I've used all alternative editors to write AS files.
I don't understand why you call them IDEs, because currently there is only one
IDE which is Flash.

Now, I found that there are no editors which supports an AS 1.0 as well as AS
2.0 and is free. Here is a list of editors I used according in order as I've
used them:

Scite - absolutely great one to write AS 1.0, it's free and don't use a lot of
CPU resources even if you open a lot of files.

FlashDevelop - for most of people it's a favorite choice, but it lacks a lot of
futures opposite to other ones which are older. It's a freeware and great to
write AS 2.0 only.

PrimalScript - a great one for AS 1.0 and AS 2.0, but it lacks some of features
that FDT have and it's commercial not free.

FDT - must be the choice for all who write a code using AS 2.0, in any other
cases - don't use it! It is commercial and quite expensive. As far as I know
there is no AS 3.0 support and it is quite difficult to set it up for the very
first time for a newbie. The number of features it has for AS 2.0 is amazing!

Sepy - can hold AS 2.0 and AS 1.0, and both of them works great! I use the last
experimental version and it's really stable on my PC. Due to this time there is
lack of updates and it seems that the developers in some kind of an idle :)
Once they made a new version each week. Personally I prefer to use this editor
because it is located in the middle regarding the features and have a great
support of both versions of AS, it's free and because I have a lot of old
projects in both versions I prefer to work with it.

Subject: [Flashcoders] Alternative IDE for Flash Devel

Thanks!

If you are a Java programmer, you will probably find the Eclipse IDE the
most comfortable place to work..
You might also be able to make some good suggestions about how to add
the Java tools that are available under Eclipse to the Flash tools.

IMHO while it may be true that Flash is the only IDE for Flash
animation, Eclipse is the best IDE for developing Actionscript applications.

using it alone is better than using TWO things that aren't all that

Scite - absolutely great one to write AS 1.0, it's free and don't use
a lot of CPU resources even if you open a lot of files.

FlashDevelop - for most of people it's a favorite choice, but it lacks
a lot of futures opposite to other ones which are older. It's a freeware and
great to write AS 2.0 only.

PrimalScript - a great one for AS 1.0 and AS 2.0, but it lacks some of

FDT - must be the choice for all who write a code using AS 2.0, in any
other cases - don't use it! It is commercial and quite expensive. As far as
I know there is no AS 3.0 support and it is quite difficult to set it up
for the very first time for a newbie. The number of features it has for AS
2.0 is amazing!

Sepy - can hold AS 2.0 and AS 1.0, and both of them works great! I use
the last experimental version and it's really stable on my PC. Due to this
time there is lack of updates and it seems that the developers in some kind
of an idle :) Once they made a new version each week. Personally I prefer to
use this editor because it is located in the middle regarding the features
and have a great support of both versions of AS, it's free and because I
have a lot of old projects in both versions I prefer to work with it.

  Thanks!

Re: [Flashcoders] Alternative IDE for Flash Devel

2006-10-16 Thread Andreas R

Oh man you're in for a treat. You've probably seen all this already but:

* try typing something like new mx.transitions.Tween. It's a god damn
miracle.
* Note that the code hinting and autocompletion extends to static
methods of classes, interfaces, almost ANY .as doc in the project dir.
I'm sure i type like 40% less now
* For total flash IDE integration, remove the swf export name from your
fdp project, change the class path of the compiler to the project dir
(so you have to type new classes.myClass for instance), and load up
flash 8 and your fla. Ctrl enter in FlashDevelop = Flash 8 test movie.
* If compiling with mtasc, you can have trace() mask as another method,
so if you have your own output/debug console, it's a cinch to have all
your traces output there instead. Such an awesome thing if your app
needs to be zincwrapped or somesuch to function properly.

FlashDevelop is, in my opinion, the single most important piece of open
source software out there for flash development. I know a number of
Norwegian studios are based *entirely* on FD and MTASC now, and my own
is probably going to wind up there as soon as we move from an is-a to a
has-a paradigm.

Nothing but love for the FD boys. Made my life miles easier

is little more than a wrapper around MTASC, I guess the real thing to do

Why can't you use MTASC? If you're serious about Flash
development,
  you
should be using it. I have a Flash application that literally
takes
  30
seconds to compile in the IDE and less than a second with MTASC.

If you don't want to have to write out that long command line
 compile
script (and who does) you should check out FLASC, which is a
great
  GUI
for MTASC which runs as a panel in the Flash IDE.

Hi Pete,
check out the project page for flasc, there are video's available that demo
it.
In addition as mentioned before, FlashDevelop wraps around mtasc too.

Why can't you use MTASC? If you're serious about Flash development,
you
should be using it. I have a Flash application that literally takes
30
seconds to compile in the IDE and less than a second with MTASC.

If you don't want to have to write out that long command line compile
script (and who does) you should check out FLASC, which is a great
GUI
for MTASC which runs as a panel in the Flash IDE.

RE: [Flashcoders] Alternative IDE for Flash Devel

2006-10-13 Thread Pete Miller
Thanx. I got it working...I entered the .fla instead of the .swf into
the place that wanted it.

No thanks to the limited information available for this tool. The Help
button points to a URL that has no information on FLASC. But, since it
is little more than a wrapper around MTASC, I guess the real thing to do
is learn how that works.

Re: [Flashcoders] Alternative IDE for Flash Devel

2006-10-12 Thread Sven Dens

Hi Andy,

Have a look at flashdevelop, http://www.flashdevelop.org.
It's a beautiful IDE that handles AS1, AS2 and AS3, is lightweight and
flexible, ... it can do the things you ask for + more!

Alternatively there's also SE|PY, http://www.sephiroth.it/python/sepy.php.
It's very good too, but I really prefer FlashDevelop.

Regards,
Sven

Re: [Flashcoders] Alternative IDE for Flash Devel

2006-10-12 Thread Robert r. Sanders
I'd try FlashDevelop (at least for actionscript 2); you can still do the
actual compile w/ the Flash IDE. There are a few, older tools, with
actionscript 1 support, but I'm not familiar w/ any of them anymore.

There is also a partially working, but discontinued plugin for Eclipse,
which can then be used in conjunction w/ the CVS or SVN team provider
for Eclipse - also there is a commercial plugin to, its kind of
expensive and I've never used it.

Hope that helps.

Re: [Flashcoders] Alternative IDE for Flash Devel

2006-10-12 Thread Julien V.
Andy,
the only solution is to use Eclipse with some flash open source tools such as
Flashout, ASDT and MTASC. I was using this combination - as known as AMES (see
http://osflash.org/ames) - since my company bought me a FDT license. For my
part, Eclipse+FDT is my favorite plateform for flash project development
management and, yes, I still do my builds with the Flash IDE for historical
reasons ;-)

Hope it helps,
Julien

Yes, this commercial plugin is FDT by PowerFlasher,
http://fdt.powerflasher.com/flashsite/flash.htm
It's really nice too, and not at all that expensive (199 Euro's).
But if you don't really need Eclipse and just want a solid lightweight (!=
Eclipse) editor I'd go for FlashDevelop.

Re: [Flashcoders] Alternative IDE for Flash Devel

2006-10-12 Thread Andy Herrman

I think FDT is the one I saw, but I don't think I could get the
company to spring for buying it for me (and personally I'm pretty
cheap). :)

I tried SEPY for a while about a month or two ago, but it was
extremely unstable. It would crash on my multiple times a day,
regardless of which version I tried. It wasn't quite what I was
looking for, but was pretty good, so I was sad that it wasn't stable.

I'll take a look at FlashDevelop. Sounds like a lot of people here
have found it useful. Thanks!

RE: [Flashcoders] Alternative IDE for Flash Devel

2006-10-12 Thread Steven Sacks | BLITZ
Why can't you use MTASC? If you're serious about Flash development, you
should be using it. I have a Flash application that literally takes 30
seconds to compile in the IDE and less than a second with MTASC.

If you don't want to have to write out that long command line compile
script (and who does) you should check out FLASC, which is a great GUI
for MTASC which runs as a panel in the Flash IDE.

RE: [Flashcoders] Alternative IDE for Flash Devel

2006-10-12 Thread Pete Miller
This looks great, but I can't figure out how to create a project in
FLASC. Specifically, it asks me to create a batch file first.

What batch file? What it is looking for?
