Re: Moderating framers WAS: FrameMaker graphics question

I USED to be unmoderated on this list but for some reason I got
unlisted. About 10 years ago I wrote a pleading letter asking to be
reinstated but I heard nothing . . .

and my posts show up days (and days) later.

RE: Import by reference question: Word conversion to FM11

2014-06-05 Thread Craig Ede
Just to clarify,I know how to get the graphics out of the Word doc. I'm
interested in clever ways to speed up replacing the embedding images in my new
FM file with referenced graphics. (The import of the Word file embeds the
graphics in FM. I want to reference them in.)f

DITA to Drupal Round Tripping and DITA to Confluence round-tripping

2014-06-05 Thread gill6034
Has anyone ever used Drupal as a CMS and/or front-end tool and/or Confluence?
The Support Guys want to use DITA as an authoring tool. The KB site is
currently authored in Confluence and then ported to Drupal. If anyone has any
experience with this, I would appreciate your words of wisdom on this scenario.

Thanks

In the .docx files I've extracted, the bitmaps were PNG. Converting

You don't need to convert Word to PDF to extract images. Save the Word
doc as .docx if it's not already, make a copy, change the extension
from .docx to .zip, extract the files, and the images are all in
\word\media.

RE: Import by reference question: Word conversion to FM11

2014-06-05 Thread Craig Ede
This zip method of extracting graphics is cleaner that the Word saveAs HTML
method in that repeated graphics are saved only once and the dual versions
(both png and jpg) get reduced to only the png files. The result in the end is
the same set of graphics, but saveAsHTML is more work to get there. Thanks for
reminding me of this Word "trick".

But beyond getting access to the graphics, I'm really looking for an efficient
way to import all these graphics to replace the embedded ones without doing it
by hand. So if anybody has a solution to that particular problem, please let me
know. For instance, is it fairly easy to get Extendscript to cycle through the
contents of an /images directory and place graphics sequentially into a series
of anchored frames tied to a particular para tag format?

Or is there an easier way?

Thanks.

Craig
Craig,

I don't know how to help you with the import issue, but I'll repeat
a tip I got from someone else:

To obtain all the original graphics files used in a Word .docx file,

1. Make a copy of the file.

2. Rename the copy, changing the extension from .docx to .zip.

3. Unzip the file.

4. Locate the Media folder within the unzipped content; it contains
all the graphics.

Best regards,

RE: Moderating framers WAS: FrameMaker graphics question

2014-06-05 Thread Harding, Dan
I made a similar complaint about the over-moderation and delays as of late on
this list, and the message was never posted to the list... as I expect this one
to not be posted as well.

Manual approval for every single message to the list is an outdated method. For
those people who need help resolving problems in a timely manner, having to
wait until the next 24- or 48-hour moderation point comes up slows down
communication and resolution in both directions.

On an open list, responses can be made and viewed as fast as the parties make
them. With manual moderation, party A makes a request, it's actually made
public up to 24 hours later. Even if someone responds with an answer, THAT
response won't be seen by the originator (unless cc'd) until another 24 hours
pass, thus slowing down each response cycle to as long as 48 hours.

This list was not always manually processed like it is now. What brought it on,
and was it approved by the list membership or unilaterally decided upon by one
or two parties? For that matter, as Craig asked, who is actually in charge of
this list?

For the list to be effective, the communication needs to be in real time (or as
close to real time as email allows).

RE: Moderating framers WAS: FrameMaker graphics question

2014-06-05 Thread Fred Ridder
Craig asked who is the moderator of this list at this point, and I have to say
that I don't know. I did visit the www.frameusers.com website, and that site
appears to still be owned by Brad Anderson, who also used to be (and maybe
still is...) the listowner of this list. But I also noted that there is no
content there that is newer than July 2011 (FrameMaker 10 still being referred
to as "new"), so it appears that FrameMaker and frameusers.com are not very
high on Brad's priority list these days.

2014-06-05 Thread Alan Litchfield
You know, that is kind of why I do not post much anymore. Threads became
quite confused as some posts were held back and answered earlier thread
posts, which were themselves answered by others who posted later but
were passed through sooner.

I think I would be a long-time framer too, by now.

True about those flame wars, but there is little evidence of them now.
So either people are better behaved or the moderation is working.

RE: Import by reference question: Word conversion to FM11

2014-06-05 Thread Fred Ridder
No, it doesn't render them as JPEGs because there is no rendering involved. The
zip archive that is the .docx file contains the source graphic files in
whatever format they were in when inserted into the Word document. Just look in
the Word/media folder inside the archive.

What this approach does *not* handle, though, is easy access to any embedded
OLE objects, such as Visio drawings or PowerPoint graphics. These show up in
the Word/embeddings folder as binary objects that are not usable outside of
Word.

Also note that it is not necessary to change the extension of the Word filename
if you have a real zip tool like WinZip rather than using Windows' own zip
feature. Just choose "All files (*.*)" in the WinZip Open dialog, and you can
open the .docx archive directly.

Re: Import by reference question: Word conversion to FM11

2014-06-05 Thread Scott Turner
Another technique to get graphics in vector rather than raster format is to
extract the page from the PDF, then crop the image. Your final image, while
better than a simple raster graphic is still limited by the original
resolution. This does get around the horizontal band problem.

Re: Import by reference question: Word conversion to FM11

2014-06-05 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Yes, but doesn't that render the extracted graphics as .jpgs? I
strongly believe that .jpg is not the best graphic format to use for
technical publications. Everyone's usage may vary and a lot depends
on how the graphics were inserted in the Word doc in the first place,
but .jpgs don't work for me; nor can I edit them. I prefer vector
when possible and when not, I'll save out as .tif. But I don't have
to make that decision if I let Acrobat extract as .eps. Even if the
Word graphics are bitmaps, they don't lose any information when
converted to .eps.

Re: Import by reference question: Word conversion to FM11

2014-06-05 Thread Carol J. Elkins
When I need to convert a Word book into Frame, the workflow I use is
to print the Word book to PDF, open the PDF in Acrobat, and export
all of the graphics as .eps files. Then I import those by reference
into the FM book. (I rename them first to some meaningful filename.)
However, sometimes for reasons I don't understand, the graphics
exported out of the PDF are rendered in multiple horizontal strips
and are not usable.

So my second workflow is to open the PDF page with the problem
graphic on it in Illustrator, select the graphic, copy it to a blank
file, and save it in Illustrator format. I import the Illustrator
graphic by reference into Framemaker.

I'm using more and more Illustrator graphics as direct imports into
my Framemaker documents. It saves time to not have to convert them to
.eps or other graphic format. Plus, when I click them in Framemaker,
they open directly in Illustrator for editing.

RE: FrameMaker 9 on Windows 7 Ultimate

2014-06-05 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
That is unfortunate. A few other things that might be of note.

1. I assume that your installation of FM 9 is fully patched?

I was on FM 9 for only a short while – I did find it to be less than useful and
did experience some crashes, but not to the degree that you seem to be
experiencing! The change-over to the new UI was particularly irritating, and I
went on to FM 10 and then FM 11 fairly soon.

2. Have you considered doing a trial install of FM 12 to see if the system
runs properly with that version?

If no issues, that may indicate that the hardware is fine in general.

Re: XML/EDD Vertical Text Placement in Structured Frame 12

2014-06-05 Thread Scott Prentice

Hi Tim...

There are "top of page" properties for paragraph styles but not "bottom
of page". The only way to specify vertical placement of content (within
the same flow) is to specify the "space above" or "space below" for that
paragraph tag.

For the main body of each page, you'll likely need to use different
elements to define the various types of content so you can assign
differing para tags which apply the right formatting. For the content at
the bottom, the only thing I can think of is that you'd set up that
content as attribute values of an element rather than content, then
you'd include that in the footer region of the page and reference the
attribute values as header/footer variables.

Here's a rough example. First the XML ..

Test of invariance at the South Pole

NSF/PLR Award 9876543
...

...

Then on the master page expand the footer area to accommodate the new
info and use the header/footer variables ..

Running H/F 3 = "<$attribute[pm]>
Running H/F 4 = "<$attribute[poc]>

.. with a little tweaking, it *should* work. :o

That's all that comes to mind .. not terribly complex, but a little
tricky. Maybe someone else will have another idea.

Of course, there's also the scripting route. You could create an
ExtendScript or plugin that performs whatever post-processing is needed.
I think the header/footer variables approach would be easier for this
situation, but if your formatting gets more complex you may need to get
out the hammer.

Cheers,

To obtain all the original graphics files used in a Word .docx file,
1. Make a copy of the file.
2. Rename the copy, changing the extension from .docx to .zip.
3. Unzip the file.
4. Locate the Media folder within the unzipped content; it contains all

1. Is this the customary way to print a top-bound book? Or should both
pages be visibly oriented the same direction? (That would put the page
number of the top (even-numbered) pages on the bound edge.)

2. If not, what is the easiest way to get the even-numbered pages
turned upside down? 1) By changing the Framemaker template; 2) By
doing something in Acrobat; or 3) by telling the printer to do
something on his end.

3. Is there a word that describes this kind of layout? I work with
imposition in booklet printing a lot but it doesn't seem to apply to
top-bound books.

I've asked my client to do a bit of usability testing to determine if
it will make a difference to his users. Will they want to view two
pages at once? Will they be inconvenienced by having to flip the book
over every time they advance to the next page? This is a field test
manual and they will definitely progress through the book one page at
a time. While he's checking that out, I thought I'd check with you for
input.

___

I think the word "imposition" still applies, and if a change is
required, I would definitely expect the commercial printer to be able to
handle it.

I print my books in-house and bind them with top-binding. My readers
need to see more than one page at a time, so both pages are oriented to
be readable simultaneously.  It sounds like that's not the case with
your readers. On the other hand, if they would be flipping through the
book to find a specific task in a series (not necessarily in sequence),
they'd probably find it annoying to have to turn & flip, turn & flip,
over and over. Being able to turn pages and quickly see the content, and
only having to fold the binder once (binding at top or bottom) when the
required page is located, would seem to be more efficient.

But I would definitely rely on your usability testing results to decide
what's best.

Hi Matt,

Unfortunately, it's not limited to a particular doc. And I forgot to add
that if I switch FrameMaker 9 to run in XP compatibility mode, the crashes
go away. But then my FrameScript add-on acts as if it is unlicensed.

FrameMaker 9 on Windows 7 Ultimate

2014-06-05 Thread M Lee
Hi All,

I have been having trouble with FrameMaker 9 ever since my company got me a
new machine. FrameMaker 9 consistently crashes when I open a file from
within FrameMaker. It happens when I have to navigate from within this Open
dialog.

I have Technical Communications Suite 2, and I'm running the Windows 7
Ultimate OS on an Alienware 17 machine with dual 2.4Ghz processors and 16
GB of RAM. This machine is actually a gaming laptop, which my company
bought for me because it was the only machine they could find with the 17
inch screen and the kind of specs I need to run our CAD software. I'm
wondering if there is something incompatible with this machine and

Any ideas?

I recently set up a doc just like that, except it stands on the desk like a
flip-chart. Each page show one common procedure. I can send you a PDF if

If each page has a single topic, then the way you have it is great.
If your procedures commonly extend beyond one page, then maybe this layout
is not a good candidate for your content.

Import by reference question: Word conversion to FM11

2014-06-05 Thread Craig Ede
Framers,

I'm converting a Word doc with some 300+ graphics to a FM book.

FM, of course, converts the doc with all the Word graphics embedded. I can get
copies of all the graphics by doing a HTML save from Word and then collecting
all the .png and .jgp files that I need from there. But what is the most
efficient way (let's call it the modern way) to get these into the FM document
as imported graphics to replace the embedded graphics. I've done the replace
each one by hand route in the past, but it "rawther bores me".

Any tips about methods to do this (extendscript, etc.) would be appreciated.

Thank you framers.

Moderating framers WAS: FrameMaker graphics question

2014-06-05 Thread Craig Ede
Statements like Ken's (below) argue for some loosening of the moderation of
this list. It's one thing to block spammers (and troublemakers) but serious
users ought to be able to post their questions without long waits and to see
the answers posted by experienced users who are being moderated. [As a
long-time framer I suggest this with a clear memory of the flame-wars that
used to break out here every year and a half or so.]

Ken, you could also send a plea to the moderator(s) to pass you through
without moderation. Who is/are the moderators at this point anyway?

XML/EDD Vertical Text Placement in Structured Frame 12

2014-06-05 Thread Bjokne, Tim (Contractor)
I am relatively new to structured Framemaker and am looking for the way
to control the vertical placement of the XML content via the EDD,
multiple text flows, or ?.

I have a functioning EDD and Frame template into which I have
successfully imported an XML file, which then takes on the font style as
assigned by the paragraph and character styles. The problem is that the
content is not vertically placed where I want it on the page. For
example, some text that is imported needs to be immediately above the
page number at the bottom of each page, regardless of how much of the
page is filled with text, which varies significantly from page to page.

Attached is a PDF of a couple of pages of what the finished product
should look like. FYI-To get the text to appear vertically where I
needed it, I inserted carriage returns manually. Without those carriage
returns, there would only be one line break between the various
sections.

I assume (hope?) there is some way to control where the text appears in
Structured Frame, not just the font style, size, bold, italic, left,
right, center justification, etc. I have searched the web with every
possible combination of search terms I could think of, but have had no
luck in finding an answer.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Tim

Subject: Reproducible FM12 file corruption?

I've been seeing occasional wonkiness (yes, I know... it's a technical term)
since upgrading from FM10 to TCS5 (FM12), but I think I have narrowed at least
one of them down to the point where the behavior is reproducible on demand, but
I'll be darned if I know what is triggering it.

Let's find out if it's just my installation/environment or if it affects others.

I'm running TCS5 under Windows 7, 64-bit Enterprise.

To try to eliminate character & paragraph format catalog issues and template
anomalies, once I was able to reproduce the behavior, I tried doing the same in
a generic FM file, and am also seeing the behavior there, so that's what I'm
going to walk through. I've included screenshots of what I see along the way.

1. Create a new file using the default "Portrait" blank paper.

2. Copy in a few paragraphs of generic text (I use www.lipsum.com).

3. Save the file.

4. Place your cursor in one of the paragraphs.

5. In the Paragraph Designer, change the Spread to 1% and hit Enter to "Apply".

6. Save the file.

7. Press Ctrl+z to undo.

8. WHAMMO!

http://www.taxschool.illinois.edu/images/fm/fm12-4.png

On my system, the margins change completely, as if room for side heads was
added. In my main working file it also put footnotes in the middle of pages.

Also, it's not just any kind of change prior to a save and then undo that
triggers the corruption. Simple text edits do not trigger it, however changes
in the paragraph and character designers do. It's not just font attributes, but
changing paragraph attributes and applying them, followed by a save and undo
will also trigger the corruption. Changing the color of selected text via the
tool palette, save, undo, will also trigger it.

It appears to be the sequence of (1) anything involving changing
*ATTRIBUTES* of text, (2) a save, and (3) an immediate undo, that triggers it.
If I do the above steps without a save, the undo does not cause the corruption.
It's as if reverting to a pre-save state makes FM go haywire.

Now that I know what triggers the page going nuts, I now know what to avoid
doing. I would experience this periodically since I'm a save-monkey, and
wouldn't know what the heck was going on.

Bizarre.
