Thanks all - we are just reviewing Composer at the moment, so I will go back
and see if we can output U3D files and take it from there.

Well, U3D is supported back to Fm8, to be specific. But support's gotten better
with each successive TCS iteration, so if Fm9 isn't easy, try it in Fm11.
Specifically, see the Reviewer's Guide for info on creating link tables from
U3D views, animations, and part names.

hypertext problem

2011-06-20 Thread Jo Watkiss
I am trying to create a link to a specific page in a pdf file, but
cannot get the link to go to the correct page.

Both source and destination files are created in FrameMaker.

The destination file is a frame book file, that is distilled to a single
pdf file.

Each frame file re-starts page numbering at page 1. (1-1, 1-2, ... 2-1,
2-2, 2-3 ... 3-1, 3-2 etc). The PDF pages are simply numbered from 1
onwards.

If I set a link to go to page 27, it goes to 2-27, which is actually
page 45. This is the first chapter that has 27 pages.

I have tried using all the following syntaxes:

gotopage filename:pagenumber

openpage filename:pagenumber

openlink filename:pagenumber

I would prefer not to put the links in manually in the pdf (there are
lots of them).

Adding a linkname marker in the destination document works, but is not
feasible because it is a legacy document.

Any suggestions?

(FM9, Acrobat 9 on Win 7)

Thanks,

Jo Watkiss

This is the marker that I use for this purpose (works in frame 6 and 9):

the :1 means it opens at page 1

I am trying to create a hyperlink to a PDF. Basically, when the user
clicks the link, I want a separate PDF file to open. I'm working in
FrameMaker 7, but the finished document will be published as a PDF.

I am using Scriptorium's FrameMaker 7 guide, which I consider my FM
bible and has always been very helpful. I can only assume that I'm being
especially dense this morning because I'm not understanding how to
create this link. It seems like I've done this before, and it wasn't
that difficult ... but it's been a while. (And my memory is fuzzy.)

The PDF I want to link is located in a folder on our network, not on a
website; otherwise, I'd use the Go to URL command from Special
Hypertext.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

OT: AutoBookmark plug-in for Acrobat

2010-11-22 Thread Jo Watkiss
Off topic I know ... but does anybody have any experience of
AutoBookmark plug-in for Acrobat? At first appraisal it seems to do
what I want (check and report on links), but I'd be interested to know
if anybody has experience (good or bad) of it.

I'd be equally happy with my old Ari's link checker - but it doesn't
work on Acrobat 9 and now it's bundled with lots of features that I
don't want and costs $$$.

Cheers,

off topic: e-drawings, eps files, frame and pdf

2010-10-28 Thread Jo Watkiss
I've been slow to acknowledge some great ideas and suggestions. Thanks
everybody.
Currently grappling with the transition from FM6 on XP to FM9 on Win 7.
No doubt there will be more questions to follow... :)

Hi Jo,

one of more solutions, following with e-drawings and Acrobat 8 or 9 Pro
Ext.:

1. Open Acrobat 8 Pro 3D or 9 Pro Ext.
2. Open the drawing with e-drawings, move it in the position you like
it.
3. Push PRTSC and the graphic from e-drawings will save in Acrobat, you
can save it as u3d in PDF.
4. Import this in your FrameMaker file.

Other way:
1. Open the Solidworks original file with Acrobat 8 Pro 3D Toolkit,
Acrobat 9 Pro Ext. 3D Previewer
or Take DEEP EXPLORATION from Right Hemisphere.
2. Now you can reduce objects and save it as u3d.
2. Import this in your FrameMaker file.

Add-On: If you like to set links in FrameMaker to views and animations
in you u3d and to create a 3D PDF, then take
SQUIDDS 3D Communication Package (www.squidds.de/en/3dpdf)

- Georg

Framers, I know this is way off topic - but knowing how much knowledge
there is on here, I'm hoping somebody can point me to a good resource or
forum to help.

I'm trying to get vector images from Solidworks e-drawings into
FrameMaker and then to PDF. However in the resulting PDF, the vectors
draw so slowly on the page that it is causing problems for our readers.

RE: off topic: e-drawings, eps files, frame and pdf

2010-10-18 Thread Jo Watkiss
Thanks everybody for lots of advice and suggestions.

We don't have access to Solidworks itself, only the 3D e-drawing (.easm)
that is supplied by the project engineer. We use the Solidworks
eDrawings Viewer to manipulate the model to get the illustration that we
need. Unfortunately, if we want to export a vector, its 'all or nothing'
- which is probably why the resulting image renders so slowly on screen.

I agree that in a perfect world the engineer would create all the
illustrations we need as 2D PDFs directly from Solidworks; or we would
have another Solidworks licence so that we could do it ourselves. In
our imperfect world, we have to make do with the eDrawing.

I've concluded its best to use a bitmap wherever possible, and a vector
only when absolutely necessary.

Cheers,
Jo

2010-10-15 Thread Jo Watkiss
Framers, I know this is way off topic - but knowing how much knowledge

I'm trying to get vector images from Solidworks e-drawings into
FrameMaker and then to PDF. However in the resulting PDF, the vectors
draw so slowly on the page that it is causing problems for our readers.

The path we are taking is:

Print from e-drawings to .ps file

Open .ps file in CorelDraw and save as .eps (or .wmf or .pdf - the end
result is the same)

Import .eps into Frame and then make PDF as normal

I think the source of the problem is the original .ps files, because
they are so complex (some images have 38,000+ objects in them).

If anybody knows how I can achieve better results, or can direct me to a
more appropriate forum or user group, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks,

Jo Watkiss

RE: hyperlink problem - solved

2009-11-25 Thread Jo Watkiss
Thanks Art and Stuart,

I needed to turn on the 'Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs'
option.
I have a feeling this issue has come up before, but I'd forgotten about
it!

BTW - I'm printing a postscript file and then distilling, because it
seems to be the only way to get the book into a single PDF file. If I've
missed something, please let me know.

Thanks,

hyperlink problem

2009-11-24 Thread Jo Watkiss
I'm almost embarassed to ask a question about FrameMaker 6 - but I hope
you can cast your minds back and offer some help

I have a book file with approx 10 files and numerous cross-references
between them.
All appears OK in Frame, but when I convert to a single PDF, some of
them work as hyperlinks and some don't.
I have been unable to find any pattern as to why some work and some
don't.

All are defined in the same way, and I've checked the destination
markers and they all look OK - for example:
Marker type: Cross-Ref
Marker Text: 76307: H2 Heading2: Collection Table Adjustment

I'm converting to PDF by 'writing' a postscript file using Adobe PDF and
then running through distiller.
I've tried toggling the postscript between 'optimise for speed' /
'optimise for portability', which makes no difference.

Using FrameMaker 6
Acrobat 8
Win XP

Any thoughts?

Open cross-reference in new window

2009-06-16 Thread Jo Watkiss
Is it possible to make a cross-reference (not a marker) open in a new
window ?

Here's the situation:
FrameMaker 9.0 book with approx 10 files.
Cross-references are both within and between the FM files.
The book is converted to a single PDF file.

For convenience, our readers sometimes want to open the cross-reference
in a new window - even though it means that then they have two copies of
the file open. In Acrobat Reader 8 and earlier, you can do this with
right-click 'open link in new window'. But Adobe has removed this from
Acrobat Reader 9. So I'm looking for a work-around.

Any suggestions ?

As always, TIA for any help,
Jo Watkiss

Hi Rick,

This works OK for links to a separate file, but not to links in the same

Is there anything I can do in the Frame file to force cross reference to
open in a new link?

Unfortunately we also have incredibly inept readers and asking them to
change their preferences is unrealistic.

In Acrobat 9, you can set a preference for this. Go to the Documents

RE: Add information to registry ?

2009-05-22 Thread Jo Watkiss
Sorry for the long silence on this - been busy.

I'm not certain, but I think this message only started when I installed
FM9. Off list I've heard that others are getting the same message.
I only get the message when opening FM6.
I've been selecting 'No' to adding information to the registry. If I
say 'Yes' I get another message saying that it can't save the file.

When I've finished this project I'm planning to move to FM9 which is, I
guess, one way to solve the problem. In the meantime I'm just living
with it.

Jo -

Do you get this message when starting FM 6, FM 9 or both? Have you
looked at the contents of the fmreg.reg file (it's really just a text
file so you can open it in notepad or similar editor) to see what it is
trying to add?

Typically, these sort of files update the registry to associate file
types with applications, etc. It may be because you loaded FM 9 and
the install process didn't delete its temporary files - did this message
start to appear after the FM 9 install?

want to add the information in C:\Documents and Settings\jowatkiss\Local
Settings\Temp\frmreg.reg to the registry?'

This has only started very recently, and I can't tie it in to
any software updates.

I'm not sure if this is indicative of a problem - and should I
be selecting Yes or No?

I'm still using FrameMaker 6 (although have 9 installed also),
on Win XP Professional, SP3.

Thanks for any advice,
Jo Watkiss

Add information to registry ?

2009-05-22 Thread Jo Watkiss
Sorry for the long silence on this - been busy.

I'm not certain, but I think this message only started when I installed
FM9. Off list I've heard that others are getting the same message.
I only get the message when opening FM6.
I've been selecting 'No' to adding information to the registry. If I
say 'Yes' I get another message saying that it can't save the file.

When I've finished this project I'm planning to move to FM9 which is, I
guess, one way to solve the problem. In the meantime I'm just living
with it.

Jo.

It may be because you loaded FM 9 and
the install process didn't delete its temporary files - did this message
start to appear after the FM 9 install?

text layout and page count stay the same on both Letter and A4.

Having recently upgraded to Acrobat 8 (from 5), I now find that I
can't print a book file to a single pdf.

'Print to file' doesn't work, and using Acrobat's 'Adobe PDF' just
produces a separate pdf file for each file in the book (with
cross-document links broken).

What am I doing wrong? I'm sure this ought to be possible.

RE: Book file PDF problem

2008-12-11 Thread Jo Watkiss
I had a look in the Frame print dialogue but can't see an option to print a
single file or separate files - maybe this is something introduced later than
Frame 6.0?

I have found a work around though - which is to print to file targetting a
different printer (ie. not Adobe PDF) - and then running that file through
distiller.

In the Frame Print dialog, is Save Boos As have Single File selected? You may
have the Separate File for Each Document selected.

I don't understand the links not working because they always hve for me when I
have Separate Files selected.

Having recently upgraded to Acrobat 8 (from 5), I now find that I can't print a
book file to a single pdf.

'Print to file' doesn't work, and using Acrobat's 'Adobe PDF' just produces a
separate pdf file for each file in the book (with cross-document links broken).

What am I doing wrong? I'm sure this ought to be possible.

RE: Book file PDF problem

2008-12-11 Thread Jo Watkiss
Bad, bad, bad idea! This means you're generating PostScript specific to
that printer and with the limitations of that printer.
Agree 100% - its only a work around for now until I get this sorted.

Anyway, if changing to a different printer driver changed your output
from separate chapter PDFs to a single book PDF, then something's wrong
somewhere.
Yup.

I suspect the answer is upgrade my FrameMaker.

FM7.2 has a Print Book As setting, and you can choose Single Print Job
or Separate Print Job for Each Document. IIRC, in FM6 you made it
separate jobs as Art said, by putting an asterisk in the name field. I
think the behavior when you didn't specify Print to File was to print
the book as one job (assuming you initially chose the Print Book
command), but can't swear to it.

I have found a work around though - which is to print to file

Bad, bad, bad idea! This means you're generating PostScript specific to
that printer and with the limitations of that printer. For instance, if
you picked a monochrome printer, your PDFs will have no color. There'll
be unprintable areas of the page specific to that printer's paper
handling characteristics. The PostScript code may target specific
characteristics of that physical printer, causing file bloat or odd
behavior in the resulting PDF. Etc., etc., etc.

_Always_ use Adobe PDF for PDFs.

Anyway, if changing to a different printer driver changed your output
from separate chapter PDFs to a single book PDF, then something's wrong
somewhere.

You might want to review your steps and check all settings in both
procedures to see if anything else was different between the two
scenarios besides the printer driver.

Agreed - Frame 6 is ancient, and I suspect that's why I'm having these

Do you know if the FM8 evaluation will sit alongside my FM6 or would I
need to roll-back afterwards if necessary?

It's possible that it was introduced later than 6 -- there aren't a lot
of people using that version because it's an antique.

If I recall correctly, there is a field in which you specify the name of
the PDF file though. I also recall that if you put an asterisk in that
field, it's the signal to Acrobat to generate individual files.

If that doesn't work, some Googling may turn up the correct syntax, and
it's probably in the manual / online help.

I have a FrameMaker document that incorporates PDF graphics within
anchored frames. When trying to make a PDF of this document the process
stops once the first PDF page is encountered.

What do I need to do to create a PDF from a FrameMaker document that
contains referenced PDF pages? The document displays OK and prints OK.

BTW. The referenced PDFs are a sequence of pages from a PDF document.
They are inserted by reference.

Subject: Making PDF of a FrameMaker document that contains PDF graphics

FrameMaker 7.2
Windows XP Pro

I have a FrameMaker document that incorporates PDF graphics within
anchored frames. When trying to make a PDF of this document the process
stops once the first PDF page is encountered.

What do I need to do to create a PDF from a FrameMaker document that
contains referenced PDF pages? The document displays OK and prints OK.

BTW. The referenced PDFs are a sequence of pages from a PDF document.
They are inserted by reference.

Regards...Chris

frame pdf - opening links in new window

2008-11-08 Thread Jo Watkiss
I'm converting a Frame file to PDF. The file includes numerous links to
other files, which I need to open in new windows. In the past, I've
used a document-level javascript (openinplace) in the pdf file to make
all links open in new windows. However this no longer works in Acrobat
8, so I want to set this action in the Framemaker file. (The
alternative is to use an application-level javascript in the pdf - but I
have no idea how to do that.)

The hyperlink I'm currently using is openpage
Is there a way to force this to open in a new window?

Thanks,
Jo Watkiss

But how about the interim stage when I'm still on Frame 6 with Acrobat

I'm currently using Frame 6 and Acrobat 5 on Windows XP.
I'm about to upgrade to Acrobat 9, and will (in time) upgrade to Frame

 8.

Can anybody offer advance warning of compatibility issues I might
encounter before I take the plunge?

 Thanks.

RE: Opening same-document links in a new window

2008-07-02 Thread Jo Watkiss
Shlomo, Art - thank you for your suggestions.

The problem is that I'm linking to destinations in the same file - so
unchecking Open cross-document links in same window doesn't work.
I've had a quick look at TimeSavers, and it seems the same applies (only
for cross-document links, not same-document links).

Thanks,
Jo

Jo,

I know the user can do this with right-click open link in new window,

but it seems this is too difficult for them.

There is a local viewing preference in Acrobat or Reader that controls
whether a linked PDF opens in a new window.
In Acrobat 8: Edit Preferences Documents -- turn off Open
cross-document links in same window (it is turned on by default); in
previous Acrobat/Reader versions this preference is in the General
category.

Preferences apply to the Acrobat/Reader in the computer where the PDF is
viewed, but not to the PDF file itself.

[My FrameMaker-to-Acrobat add-on has a function that controls the new
window property globally or individually to FM
cross-references/hypertext links, so that no additional actions are
necessary after the PDF is created. This can also be optionally be
applied to PDFs displayed in a browser, so that web-based links will
display in a new browser window.
