Re: [Framers] Printing Tag Properties

2023-12-14 Thread Mike Wickham
Just an additional comment on my earlier Format List from squidds.de
post: I'm using an older version of FM, so haven't bought this utility
for a while. But I seem to recall that, since I last purchased, they
changed their license from a one-time purchase to requiring an upgrade
with every FM upgrade. So you might want to check that out and consider
it before any purchase.

Re: [Framers] Printing Tag Properties

2023-12-14 Thread Mike Wickham
There is a utility that I like a lot for this. Squidds.de makes a
Finalyser plugin that contains a whole bunch of utilities.. One is
Format List. It prints out what you want and, unlike the Silicon Prairie
Software plugin, puts all the paragraph properties into a single table.
This makes it much easier to scan down a column to find a style with an
errant font, for example.

The problem is that the squidds.de site is a bear to operate for
ordering. First, it's in German, so you have to turn on the English
version, which isn't perfect. Then you have to find the Finalyser
product. Then you have to find the price list for it, which is the only
place that displays options to buy individual utilities (on the second
page). $299 Euros for Format List. Not cheap, considering that it used
to $99.

Re: [Framers] Document reflows when saving to PDF

2023-08-24 Thread Mike Wickham
I hardly use FrameMaker these days, but as I recall, Times can hide on
reference pages and master pages, which require a separate search from
body pages. Times may also hide in imported objects. Another place that
unexpected fonts hide is in table titles. You insert a new table, but
don't need a title on it, so you turn the title off. But it's still
hiding there with an assigned font attached. (FM uses Times New Roman as
default there.) Finally, I think I remember that, if you print
registration marks, AdobePDF chooses Times as the font to print them.
There's nothing you can do about it, but I wouldn't think that would
cause reflow.

The most common cause of reflow , though, is not having AdobePDF set as
the default printer. If it's not set, then FM uses the font character
spacing of the driver for the printer that is set, but changes it when
you create the PDF. I'm sure that's not news to you.

Regarding Calibri reflowing, is it possible that the document could be
using a printer resident version of the font, then when you switch to
AdobePDF to print, it might be picking up a different, installed version
of the font instead? Again, that would assume that you don't have
AdobePDF as default printer. Looking in printer properties, there is an
entry for "TrueType Font" that lets you choose between "Download as
Softfont" or "Substitute with Device Font." The first is preferable
because it prevents substitutions with a font that might have an
identical name, but different metrics.

BTW, I am assuming that by reflow, you mean words move from one line to
another, changing lines and paragraph layout. But, if your issue is only
a reflow of line length, there is also a maker.ini setting,
"DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On" that affects the placement of words on
the screen. It lets you choose between displaying characters optimally
(using the optimal number of pixels), at the expense of line length.
There are not enough pixels on screen to perfectly display characters
and the spacing between them, so FM has to either fudge the spacing
between them or fudge the line length.

When set to "On", the spacing between characters will not be accurate,
and the characters themselves might look a little rougher, but the
length of the line of characters will be accurate and everything will
print its best and with the layout you expect. When set to "Off," FM
optimizes the characters for clarity on screen at the expense of line
length. So lines of typed characters, at times, might even extend beyond
the margin, even though they won't print that way. If you are not
justifying text, you might not even notice this because you expect a
ragged right-hand margin. When you print, the printer has many more dpi
and gets it all right—but line lengths will not be what you saw on
screen. So "On" gives a closer preview of how the document will print.
"Off" makes characters look best on screen, but doesn't care so much
about how lines look.

I can't believe that I wrote all that.  I miss Framemaker!

It is causing the document to reflow. The font is not Times or Times New
Roman but Calibri. Querying the properties in FrameMaker and Acrobat show
that they are both Calibri 9 point. I have seen this message in the past,
but the reflow is a big problem for this project. Is there a setting that

Re: [Framers] Old problem with scrolling in Frame

2022-02-17 Thread Mike Wickham
It wasn't exactly clear which scrolling bug you've encountered, but if
it is the one where scrolling happens, but extremely slowly, this is the
solution that worked for me, back in the day, from an Adobe tech
representative:

===
1. For the problematic workspace, check from Window -> Panels (this
shows the list of open panels, the checked ones are visible panels,
others are open but might not be visible)

2. Click on the para designer.
3. Now, with these steps:
    i.   File -> Preferences -> Interface
ii.  Uncheck "Hide panels on Close" (This option kills a panel
on close,

else a panel would stay open in the background)
    iii. Close Para Designer

===

Me again, but I have done everything that I can think of doing to solve this
issue BEFORE I posted and I am at a loss. I have a book for which I am
generating a TOC. I have selected the necessary paragraph tags for the TOC
and generated. All the entries in the TOC are functioning as hyperlinks as
they should with the exception of 5 specific entries. They are deader than a
door nail. The first TOC entry above this set of five entries is an active
hyperlink and the first TOC entry below this group of 5 is also an active
hyperlink.

I have done the following:

1. Deleted this specific text in the book and re-entered it.
2. Confirmed that there is no override to any of these tags - the text
is EquationCaption w/out any overrides (No asterisk is showing for them.)
3. Turned on all conditional text settings and generated the book to
check and see if there was something buried in the hidden text that was
causing the issue, but even w/ all the conditions turned on, I still have
the issue.
4. Added the same kind of tag (an Equation Caption) directly above and
directly below the section of five that are giving me fits and regenerated
and the tag above and below are indeed hyperlinks but these 5 remain
stubbornly dead.
5. All the equations are PDFs in this book, so I assumed that maybe
there was a graphic issue, so I deleted the five relevant graphics and
regenerated and again, the links are still dead.

I am at a loss at this point. It is just this one small section in an
otherwise large and graphic-laden manual, so there's nothing common about
this issue that I can compare to other sections in this book as no other
sections are giving me this problem.

I would welcome any and all suggestions, insight, etc.

Re: [Framers] Quality of vector graphics created in FrameMaker is bad in CMYK PDF output

2021-08-21 Thread Mike Wickham
It has been a long time, so I'm not positive that I'm remembering this
correctly, but I recall that issue having something to do with either
using EMF or WMF files-- that it was a limitation of the file type. I
also seem to remember some issues related to CMYK where, if graphics
were not EPS files, they would be channeled through Windows GDI and come
out as RGB (and maybe processed into EMF or WMF along the way?) Anyway,
the solution for me, at the time, was merely to always use EPS graphics
in my documents, if I ever wanted correct CMYK output. Again, it has
been a while since I worked with FM (FM 10). So forgive me if I'm not
remembering this quite right. And I realize that FM support for CMYK may
have changed since then.

Re: [Framers] Paragraph Style Issue

Be aware that there are three settings for the check boxes. A check mark
is on. A solid box is "keep as is." And an empty box is off. When I
first started in FrameMaker, I thought clicking the box once, so that
the check mark was gone was turning it off. It is not. It sets it to as
is, which is unchanged. It takes two checks to turn it off.

I am editing and creating new Para styles and for some reason, when I set
the Font characteristics for an incredibly simple (new) style, it won't
retain a specific setting.

Namely, Frame seems to be "insisting" that the style include the checkboxes
for both Lower Case and Upper Case (all lower case is the winner as I can't
enter an upper case letter in the text).

No matter how many times I deselect the checkboxes, no matter the order of
deselection and Update Style, they always reapply themselves.

Have I found some weird bug or am I doing something wrong?

Note that this hasn't affected any of the other new and updated styles I've
worked on so far.

FYI: The style uses 11 pt regular Calibri, with 12 points below and a 6mm
hanging indent.

much in this GIF. The black is darker over the cyan, wit the "E" showing
in two colors, as expected with overprinting. The cyan and magenta
plates, though, are not correctly overprinting and have letters of
unchanged color where they are supposed to overprint:

CMYK

Below is the PDF with the black and yellow plates turned off. You can
see that they were overprinted. The full cyan plate remains:

CM plates only

Below is the image with the magenta plate turned off. You can see that
it knocks out the cyan plate, even though all colors are set to overprint:

CYK only

And below is the cyan plate turned off. It knocks out the yellow plate,
even though all colors are set to overprint:

MYK only

So there is definitely some error in the process. Overprinting works
with black and yellow plates, but not cyan and magenta. The Object
Inspector in Acrobat works similarly to your Quite Revealing. It
accurately shows what the PDF presents, i.e. overprint=true for black
and yellow, but false for cyan and magenta. I confirmed this by printing
to a Xerox Phaser CMYK printer to be sure it wasn't a display artifact.

I cannot figure out why overprints are only flowing to the PDF for two
of the four plates! All four color definitions are set to Process
Overprint in FrameMaker.

Re: [Framers] Overprint Not Working in FrameMaker 10 and Acrobat Pro 2017

2021-04-14 Thread Mike Wickham
Ok, this has gotten way weirder, but I have managed a partial solution
that lets me create this particular file the way I want. I suspect the
book will bomb out, though. I've always had trouble getting Save as PDF
to work with books. Here is what fixed it enough for now:

1. I used Save as PDF. Print to PDF does not seem capable of passing
overprints to PDF. But, even using Save as PDF, Acrobat may say "Page
has Overprint: Yes," but still knockout backgrounds.

2. Changing ink from 100% black to 99% black in my Overprint Black color
definition, makes it overprint. Oddly, creating an Overprint Yellow at
100% works fine. Magenta and Cyan do not overprint, even at 99% ink.
Fortunately, I only need black to work in this book.

Anyway, I've been troubleshooting for two days. As long as black works,
I'm probably okay. I'll be back if I can't get the whole book to Save as
PDF.

And, a final note to Heiko, I'm curious how you created your PDF and if
you actually turned off individual ink plates to see if overprints
actually worked or if Acrobat was just lying to you, like it did to me! :)

Well, hmmf. Mine says "Page has Overprint: No," and knocks out
everything below it. I even tried using a drawn rectangle on the body
page, as you did, instead of a background graphic. Same result. I also
tried setting the color definition of regular black to overprint. Same
result. So there must be a bug in my FM10 or Acrobat 2017. I wonder if I
have a plugin that conflicts and causes the failure.

Re: [Framers] Overprint Not Working in FrameMaker 10 and Acrobat Pro 2017

2021-04-14 Thread Mike Wickham
In the meantime, I believe I've found the sad answer to my question.
Overprint settings only work when printing _separations_ to PDF. This is
ridiculous! They should work on composite PDFs, too!

So, in the end, creating an Overprint Black color definition, and
assigning it to appropriate paragraph formats on the body page and to
the line rules on the master page is all that is necessary. It just does
not work with composite PDFs. Does anyone send separations to their
printer, rather than a composite PDF in this day and age?

Mike Wickham

Hi, all,

I'm having issues getting overprint settings to work. I have a document
that has a full-page, solid-color graphic imported and filling the
entire master page background. So the page is not white, but has a
color. I want to overprint black text on it, rather than have the text
knockout the background and risk registration issues at press time. But
I cannot get overprint to work. The text keeps knocking out the
background. Here is what I have done:

1. I created a color definition called Overprint Black, set to Process,
CMYK, 0% CMY and 100% black, and Overprint.

2. I assigned Overprint Black as the text color for all text formats on
the body page. I thought this would be enough, but it wasn't so, I did
the following in progressive steps.

3. On the master page, I set Object Properties of all text frames and
the background EPS graphic to Overprint. I found some Adobe help that
says that EPS files don't overprint, so I tried with a TIF background
graphic instead. Same result.

4. On the reference page, I set the Object Properties of the Single Line
background frame item (there are a couple of these on the page) to
Color: Overprint Black and Overprint: Overprint.

So I have text color, text frames, and even the graphic (though it is
behind everything) set to overprint. I expect text and single line rules
to overprint the colored background graphic. But they all knock out the
background graphic.

Using File>Print with printer set to Adobe PDF (with and without print
to file) I generate a complete PDF, using FrameMaker 10 and Acrobat
2017. The PDF is beautiful, but the Object Inspector in Acrobat shows
"Overprint=False" for everything. And if I look at separations, the
non-black plates are, indeed, knocked out.

I have been away from FrameMaker for a while, so am a little rusty. What
am I missing? Why is Overprint not working?

Re: [Framers] Processing time

2021-04-07 Thread Mike Wickham
This sounds a little like a bug I encountered in FrameMaker 9. If I used
the arrow keys to scroll, the cursor moved extremely slowly and would
travel at only about one character per second. I'm not sure what the
issue was, but it occurred when the Paragraph Designer was open and got
worse if the Character Designer was also open. The "Hide panels on
Close" setting was the key. Perhaps this old bug has worked its way back
into new code. It wouldn't be the first time with FM.

Anyway, Amit Agarwal of Adobe sent me a fix that worked for my problem.
Perhaps it will solve your problem, too:

1. For the problematic workspace, check from Window -> Panels (this shows the
list of open panels, the checked ones are visible panels, others are open but
might not be visible)
2. Click on the para designer.
3. Now, with these steps:
i.   File -> Preferences -> Interface
ii. Uncheck "Hide panels on Close" (This option kills a panel on
close,
else a panel would stay open in the background)
iii. Close Para Designer

being noticeable lag in cursor movement.

Since Frame apparently wasn't coded to utilize multiple CPU cores, modern CPUs
with multiple cores/threads are of minimal benefit. What Frame wants is one
ginormously powerful CPU core rather than distributed CPU power. Other Adobe
apps like Photoshop were developed to utilize multiple CPU cores as well as the
GPU horsepower... which is what Frame needs.

Ugh.

Re: [Framers] version numbering and document control

2021-02-12 Thread Mike Wickham
It seems like the easy solution would be simply to replace month and
year with year and an incremented number: 2021-1, 2021-2, 2021-3 ...

maybe wait to the beginning of the next year to start the change.

But what has me stymied is, what number do I start with? It doesn't really
make sense to me to start at 1 because some of these manuals are now 10
years old and have had multiple revisions/updates.

Any advice?

(My boss also wants me to implement some kind of document control system, a
la what we do with engineering drawings in Autodesk Vault but that's a
secondary step and one I have not figured out yet. He has said he wants to
put manuals in Vault like the drawings are, and I'm still not sure how well
that would work. I could see maybe uploading pdfs, but I'm thinking doing
this with the frame files would get messy.)

Re: [Framers] image background problem

2020-09-16 Thread Mike Wickham
Ken, I think what you probably need to do is to add a "clipping path." I
haven't used PSDs in FrameMaker-- I've always saved graphics as EPS--
but transparency was never honored for me without a clipping path.

A question about an image technique that I've never been able to master but it

Word when I have to, I'm 22 years into FrameMaker and -- other than this --
it's usually so damn easy to do these things in Frame.

The original newsletter (in Word) has a colorful banner with lettering across top of the
first page. I can copy the main graphic element (a stylized color bar with a curved lower
edge, similar to the Nike "swoosh") from the Word file and paste it onto the
top of page 1 of the new Frame file, but I need to delete a white area from the lower
portion of that graphic (easier shown than described; contact me off-list and we can do a
share-screen Zoom thing so I can show you what I mean).

I used Adobe Photoshop CS4 to "apparently" successfully delete that white
portion from that jpg file; the formerly white area of the original image is now the
familiar grey checkerboard. I saved that modified image as a psd file.

But when I imported the new (psd) image to partly overlay another graphic
element on the first page of the FrameMaker 10 version of the newsletter, the
imported graphic still has that white area which overlays the other graphic
element. Which is what I don't want.

What didn't I do or what am I doing wrong? Whatever was done in Word should
more easily be done in Frame, or so I thought.

Help please?

deal of money and time for Adobe to try to port it. They weren't willing to

There *was *a brief time period at the end of 2019 where Adobe provided a

My assumption is that if and when they retire the activation servers for

Since I have none of the CS products, I also don't know if Adobe sent out a

Re: [Framers] Images make scrolling through a Frame document problematic

2020-07-18 Thread Mike Wickham
I also seem to recall a setting that affected whether a document loaded
all graphics in a file up front, or as you scroll to them. The first
method, loads the .fm file more slowly, but, once loaded, the graphics
appeared quickly when scrolling. The alternate setting makes the .fm
file load fast because it didn't load graphics unless they actually
scroll onto the screen. Unfortunately, I can't remember what that
setting was, nor could I find it. Maybe it will give a hint that allows

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker and transparency

2020-05-16 Thread Mike Wickham
Ken, FrameMaker 10 is capable of honoring transparency in certain
circumstances, but presents difficulties. It has been a long time since
I've used a transparent graphic, so let me see if I can remember how I
did it. One thing I seem to recall is that having a transparent
background wasn't enough, or maybe wasn't even necessary. The key thing
was to put a clipping path around the object you want to keep. Then FM
would recognize it and  knock out the rest. HOWEVER, FM 10 doesn't
always display that transparency. So-- again, I might be remembering
this wrong-- but, if you put one graphic with clipping path over another
graphic, only the graphic in front actually displays. BUT it would print
correctly to PDF. I do seem to recall that some graphics would honor the
clipping path in display, i.e. not show the stuff you want knocked out,
but that they had to be background graphics maybe? I can't recall. In
other words, if I put the graphics fully  within the text column, the
transparency would not show. But if I placed the graphic in the page
margin, I could move it in toward the text column, overlapping it, and
text would run around the clipping path.

I probably got some stuff wrong there, but maybe it will point you in
the right direction. The key point to remember is that clipping paths
are necessary to get results in some circumstances, and those results
might be visible on when you print.

Oh, and I think the graphics have to be EPS files. I don't think PSD
files work. Your text frame on top of a text frame might also add a
factor of complexity to it. So try it in the main text frame, first.

On 5/16/2020 11:21 AM, Ken Poshedly wrote:

Ladies & Gents,

Short question: Does FrameMaker 10 support transparency (i.e., no background)
in imported graphics or not?

Details: I've created a "Text Frame" (not a Graphic Frame) on a page in a new document
which has, of course, the usual frame for text flow. So that's a newly created Text Frame ON TOP OF
a system-created "text flow frame" on a blank page. Then, in FrameMaker 10, I used 40
percent Royal Blue as the Fill for the new Text Frame.

I then inserted my text into the new tinted Text Frame and inserted (by
reference) a small graphic saved as a psd file which I've modified in Photoshop
CS4 to have a transparent background (checkerboard pattern where the white
background had originally been).

In this case, the text warns the readership of the journal that I edit to be responsible
and not open certain e-mails (and you know the rest). I've found a small little
anti-virus symbol to use with that text (a red-framed triangle with an exclamation point
and the word "Virus" inside the triangle -- like a European road sign). The
original version of the graphic was a jpg which had a white background around the
triangle; so, like I said, I used Photoshop CS4 to do the layering-thing and delete the
white background around the triangle, then saved the new image as a psd file (and also as
a png file). The newly modified image looks just right.

But when I import (by reference) the psd (or even the png) version of that new
image, the area around the red triangle still shows as white inside the tinted
Text Frame. So it displays (and prints on a color laserjet printer) as a white
box with the red-framed triangle inside the the blue-tinted Text Frame.

I checked various resources, including Adobe and YouTube videos, about doing
the transparent layering thing and I am apparently doing that part correctly.

So is this a limitation of FrameMaker 10 (to not recognize transparent layers
or whatever) or am I missing something? I would be most happy to take this off
-list and send the image (and even the FM file) to whoever wants to take a stab
at this.

Or must I somehow learn how to set the area surrounding the red triangle to the
same color as the blue tint in the Text Frame in the FrameMaker 10 doc. And how
to do THAT?

By the way, I do not have the resources or desire (especially in these tough times) to
"upgrade" to a new FM version with a perpetual monthly fee.

in a new version that will no longer be openable by FrameMaker 7,
without conversion. I believe FM 2019 will let you save as MIF 7--
though if you have used features that were not available in FM 7 days,
you may lose some data. I have no experience with this. Others will be
able to help more. There are also some fine, inexpensive scripts out
there that let you save back to various FM versions-- but again, some
things created with new version can't save backward.

There may also be some character conversion issues moving files in
either direction. FrameMaker 8 moved to Unicode. So there are issues
with the way some characters display (if at all) when you move files
back and forth across that boundary.

10. I HATE the subscription model. FrameMaker 2019 still has the
perpetual license available. and I implore you to go the perpetual
license route so that the option doesn't disappear. It has disappeared
for the other important Adobe products. Subscriptions are nice in that
they can budget the high cost of software on a monthly basis, but they
are a poor value in the long run. Subscriptions cost more in the long
run. Adobe upgrades FrameMaker approximately every 18 months. It is $400
to upgrade the perpetual license (if you own the most recent version),
but it is $540 to rent the software on the subscription model for the
same period. Not only that, but a perpetual license is an asset. If you
sell your company, it increases the valley of your asking price. You can
even sell the license standalone and get some or all your $1000 back.
But with the subscription model, FrameMaker is not an asset. You get an
expense and a contract liability. instead.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, if you ever stop paying the monthly rental, your
software quits. You are done working in FrameMaker, unless your files
can be converted safely back to your old FM7 version-- and you better do
the conversion before the subscription runs out and FrameMaker turns off!

Hi, Framers,
Apologies for a somewhat long post, but I would really like some input. We are

stable and its amazing features have served our purposes without having to
upgrade over the years. We upgraded our computers to Windows 10 last year, but
the 32-bit Frame has worked in that system so far. We do get messages about
fonts changing when we change print driver to Adobe for making PDFs, but it
hasn't had any ill effects for us. Some background:
We do legal books in Frame that use the generated files feature for summary and
tables of contents, tables of cases, tables of statutes, and subject matter
indexes. Most of our books have extensive footnotes (lawyers love to include
footnotes that go on for 7/8ths of a page). We make PDFs of the books as well
as send MIF files to a conversion company for EPUBs. We use unstructured Frame
and don't need structure for anything. We don't use conditional text for
anything. Recently, I had an incidence of Frame files in a book I was working

work I had done on the files in the last week or so. Another coworker had saved
a Frame file to RTF and later couldn't open the Frame file again because it
said it didn't recognize the file format. This is leading us to believe that
maybe it is finally time for us to bite the bullet and upgrade to be compatible
with all the other software out there now. So, some specific quest

that they have restored those functions in 2019. So this functionality works
well now?
2. Is Frame ever going to fix the footnotes problem? I've replied to Adobe's
feature requests over the years, and they still don't have a fix.
3. Is Frame 2019 stable as far as people using it now can tell? (I've seen some
posts here about problems creating PDFs and other things that shouldn't be
happening with recent versions of Frame.)
4. There was a small problem with Frame 7.1's ability to use the scroll wheel
that needed a special mouse driver that we had to use and we had to reinstall
it when we went to Windows 10, but once the driver was in place, it was fixed.
I'm assuming Frame 2019 doesn't have any issues like this anymore, right?

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2020

2020-01-16 Thread Mike Wickham
Optical margins are margins made to look visually straight. FrameMaker
makes them actually straight. So, if you have a line that begin with,
say, a quotation mark or an apostrophe, there is a bit more white space
at that point on the line, because the character is small. Your eye
notes that and your brain tells you that the column edge isn't exactly
straight. With optical margins, characters are shifted slightly to make
them visually appear straight. Here's a short article with a graphic
that shows it:

https://indesignsecrets.com/tip-of-the-week-using-optical-margin-alignment.php

Yes, FrameMaker can use old style numerals if the file has them, but not
automatically. You can't just type the numbers and get oldstyle, you
have to use the Character Map to find them in the font and then copy or
type in their Alt-codes. Programs that support OpenType features can be
set to automatically convert to old style numerals.

Again, yes, there are also fonts that have numerators/denominators and
super/subscripts, and you can use them if you set up variables or go the
Character Map route, but that's extra work. If Frame just had separate
settings for them, instead of just one, you wouldn't even need a font
that contained these characters. Or, if Frame utilized OpenType
features, it would pick those automatically.

But, you're right, I should file them as a feature request. Again. :)

What is an optical margin?

Also, if you're looking for "old style numerals", are you talking about
where numbers like the 3 extending slightly below the baseline? That
appears to be a function of the font set as much as anything else. I'm
pretty sure I've seen fonts that provide that still.

As for super/subscripts or numerators/denominators, again, depending on the
font you use, there are font sets that include super and subscript glyphs
that work well as numerators and denominators, instead of using the
superscript/subscript function on the character designer. I've got a whole
set of variables that are just constructed fractions using built-in font
glyphs. (We use Source Sans Pro because it has a lot of the mathematical
symbols we need and it also lets us construct those fractions.)

At any rate, if there are features you'd like added, you can always put in
a feature request: https://tracker.adobe.com/#/home
Talk about them here and I'm sure a bunch of us would vote for them. You
can also make requests on the Adobe FrameMaker forum:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/framemaker/bd-p/framemaker?page=1=latest_replies=all
and
tag it with Feature Request.

Re: [Framers] Adobe PDF Printer versus my printer

2019-04-10 Thread Mike Wickham

Rick,

As far as I know, that warning message can't be turned off. It is
FrameMaker warning you that changing printer drivers may cause your
document to reformat. Most people think that changing the print driver
just changes where the document will print, but it does more than that.
The characteristics of the driver also determine how the document will
display on screen. Usually, this makes little difference, maybe not even
a noticeable difference. But, sometimes, as you have seen, it changes
the word- or line-breaks and can cause an extra line of text to appear
in a paragraph, bump the last line of a table to the next page, or force
a graphic to the next column or page. This can throw off the appearance
of pages, rippling all the way forward. And if you are preparing for a
press printed book, it can, for example, cause the need to print 17
pages, when the signature (the folded stack of pages that will be sewn
into a book) is only 16 pages.

This is why it became best practice to use SetPrint to automatically set
AdobePDF as the default printer for FM when it loads. What you then see
on screen will always be exactly what you see in the PDF and, then, the
PDF will always be exactly what you see on _any_ printer or on _any_
other computer screen. Then, of course, you would print the PDF, rather
than the .fm file, to your printer.

If you don't want to use SetPrint, you might see if your desktop printer
has an option to download fonts, instead of using internal fonts. This
is a little slower, because it means that the printer must retrieve the
fonts from your computer, rather than using whatever version of them it
has hardwired, but I _think_ it might help with the reformatting.

Adobe PDF. So far so good, but I get this message:

the format and output of your document(s)."

Most of the time this doesn't matter, but I do occasionally get different
line breaks even when I am just using Arial in my document. When the PDF is
done, the line breaks in the FrameMaker file change back to the way they
were as the printer driver is changed back to my default. Is there a good
solution that will prevent this from happening?

I have tried unchecking the "Rely in system fonts only; do not use document
fonts" checkbox, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Thanks in
advance.

Re: [Framers] OT: Punctuation question

2019-01-07 Thread Mike Wickham
For comma placement, I'd pick #1, which matches the _Chicago Manual of
Style_, but I'd also suggest tightening the sentence and removing
passive voice. Result:

"The information displays across five tabs: Overview, Category, Locus,
Sequence, and Details."

I would note that the Chicago style is typically used by book

certain commas and words to make them fit better into short stories in
narrow columns. In any case, sometimes minor rewrites eliminate fights

Re: [Framers] File storage best practice

2018-11-29 Thread Mike Wickham
I prefer to keep graphics in a subfolder of the book folder. I create
them in appropriate size, in original RGB profile, and at 300 dpi, as
EPS. Keeping RGB is smaller than CMYK, with broader color gamut, and 300
dpi is high resolution, suitable for print. But, before creating final
output, I duplicate that original subfolder as backup, then run a script
in Bridge or Photoshop on the original to either convert to CMYK for
printing press (keeping 300 dpi), or run a script to resize to 96 dpi
for online.

I feel that keeping the graphics in their own subfolder makes it easy to
keep multiple versions, to swap in and out, depending on output
destination. I would note that the various archiving scripts that are
available all seem to want to automatically pull graphics from anywhere
on the computer and place them in an images subfolder, anyway.

[Framers] switching from Frame 10 to 2017 with unexpected results

2018-08-13 Thread Mike Bond
I have switched to this FrameMaker 2017 and finally ran a compile saving a
uder.ditamap as .fm and got added numbering.
Almost everything has a number before it. I am guessing that there is a
different EDD maybe but I will ask someone who knows more about this stuff than
I do.
Thanks in advance.

Re: [Framers] Using Folders and Groups

2018-08-03 Thread Mike Wickham
I use folders to separate groups of files. For example, a Front Matter
folder holds all the various title page, TOC, preface, etc. files. There
is a folder for each part and one to hold appendixes. At the end of the
book, I also have a folder set to exclude (non-printing) that holds
generated files that list graphics used in the book, and fonts used.  I
recall playing around with groups, but numbering works very differently
on them, so abandoned that idea.

I seem to recall a blog entry that was useful in figuring out folders
and groups way back when, but couldn't find it now. Searching on
"hierarchical books" turns up some hits that might help you. Looking at
the latest edition of FrameMaker help, it looks like it gives a clearer
(though not complete) explanation of folders and groups than way back in
version 9.

So far all I've found is the brief and pretty detail-less how to in Adobe's
help files, and I want more in-depth information.

I'm working on a book right now where I *think *using folders would be
useful (long chapter, trying to chunk so I can keep straight what
information is where and the like, because two of those sections are nearly
identical except for a few words and I want to keep them identical but
there are edits and additions and you know the drill), but I'm not sure if
it would be or how to set it up properly and, frankly, I'm not up to
trial-and-erroring today until I get it.

Re: [Framers] Frame alone or Adobe too?

2018-04-18 Thread Mike Wickham
If you're going to convert to Word from PDF, you might want to used
tagged PDF for the conversion. Original PDF was not interested in the
data, only its position. PDFs purpose is page layout. The idea of PDF is
to create a document that looks exactly the same on every computer
screen, with no changes due to text flow, installed fonts, window size,
etc. Consequently, it stores data in very strange ways. Words aren't
necessarily stored as words, or paragraphs as paragraphs. The phrase
"text frame" might be stored as "te," "xtf," "r," and "ame" objects, for
example, and PDF tracks which font and where to draw these bits of text.
It's weird that the text blocks that are created by PDF, and the visible
order of them, might even be stored in a different order in the file. So
trying to put these objects back into proper order for conversion to
other formats may not work well.

Anyway, as I recall, using tagged PDF causes the PDF to actually store
paragraphs as paragraph blocks, etc. So, reconstructing the data in a
proper way for conversion from PDF to Word should be better.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 14 horrific resource hog?

2018-03-20 Thread Mike Wickham
Years ago, I had an issue with very slow cursor movement. If you Google
search "S-L-O-W cursor movement in FrameMaker 9", you will find full
details. Anyway the cure was File> Preferences> Interface, then uncheck
"Hide panels on close." If checked, closed panels stay loaded and
hidden. Adobe eventually fixed the bug, but it wouldn't surprise me if
they reintroduced it accidentally, while fixing something else.

the performance improves, but to get to the point where there is no lag means
having at most 1 pod visible at any time.

None of my other applications scale so poorly with respect to resource usage.

It appears that every time you move the cursor, Frame tries to poll/update
every visible pod.

Is there any way to make things more usable other than not displaying pods?

My workstation is a Dell Precision 5810 with dual Xeon processors and 64GB of
RAM running Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit.

The only weak point in my system is the video card, which is an AMD FirePro
4100, but it's pushing three 4K monitors and one 3K monitor simultaneously.
Even set to 30Hz rather than 60Hz refresh rate, that's a lot of pixels to be
pushing around.

Would upgrading the video card help in this regard, or are there other issues
at play with how Frame updates the display?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 142, Issue 17

2018-01-30 Thread Mike Wickham
I'm not sure if I'm remembering this correctly, but I think "Bolded"
(rather than "Bold") is FrameMaker's way of saying that no actual bold
font was available for use. Rather, someone used the Bold button in the
toolbar (or selected Bolded in a paragraph or character designer) to
apply a fake bold characteristic to text that uses the Symbol font. If I
remember right, the Bold button will work as expected, if an actual bold
font exists-- but if the font doesn't exist, then bold ("bolded") is
simulated.

In the old days, of dot matrix printers, bold could be simulated on
screen and in print by double displaying/printing text, with the second
printing offset by a pixel to make the text look fat. Likewise, italics
could be faked by incrementally offsetting each row of pixels in the
text to make it appear to slant. It was ugly, but worked. When there is
no actual bold or italic font, the Bold and Italic buttons attempt to do
this. They mimic the effect on screen.  Note that this doesn't work with
all fonts. So you may have the Bolded style applied, but not be able to
see any bold text.

But displaying a fake attribute on screen doesn't mean that it will
print, and it certainly won't work in a PDF, since the needed font is
missing. Best practice is never to use the Bold or Italic buttons, since
you may not know if you have an actual bold or italic font to back it
up. You don't know what you will get. So always use an actual paragraph
or character format to apply bold or italic style-- and don't choose
"Bolded" or "Obliqued" if it pops up as an option, rather than true Bold
or Italic or Oblique.

Anyway, if this is the case, you might be able to use Find/Change to fix
it. Select Find: Character Format. Then, in the dialog that pops up, use
Shift+F8 to set everything to "As is," then select Weight: Bolded. Click
Set to close the dialog. Then click Find to find text that has the
bolded attribute. Remove the bolded attribute. If you want bold, you
will need to get a bold version of the font in question.

Hopefully, someone who understands this better will chime in if I got it
wrong.

Re: [Framers] OT: Adobe Tool Question

2016-09-12 Thread Mike Wickham
Yes, it can still be an issue on Windows, if you are unaware of the
steps necessary to prevent automatic conversion from CMYK to RGB. The
latest versions of FrameMaker have improved CMYK support built-in, but
there are still reports of it being tricky. So I have stuck with using
EPS for graphics. FrameMaker passes EPS around the Windows GDI,
eliminating the potential of unexpected CMYK to RGB or Pantone to RGB
conversions by Windows. I don't use Pantone colors, so someone else
would have to comment on the details of using them.

It's also important to be sure that Acrobat isn't set to convert colors.

Mike Wickham

This begs a question, with my apologies if it has been belabored here in the
past.

In pre-press work on Mac, I often had extensive struggles with the final PDFs
for all sorts of reasons (extraneous plates, hairlines and so on), but
'helpful' conversion *from* CMYK was never one of them.

Is this still an issue with Windows FrameMaker? The thought of Pantones being
converted to RGB is the stuff of nightmares.

Re: [Framers] OT: Adobe Tool Question

2016-09-09 Thread Mike Wickham
FrameMaker is an old program and EPS is an old all-purpose kind of
format. It acts as an envelope for both vector and bitmap graphics,
without automatically converting vector to bitmap. If you want maximum
resolution on printing press, vector is preferable for line drawings
because it is infinitely resizable without pixelation. EPS is also the
only way to keep Windows GDI from automatically converting CMYK graphics
to RGB. If your destination is printing press, CMYK is preferred over
RGB. EPS was also the only way to keep Windows from converting Pantone
colors to RGB. So, if your destination is printing press, EPS graphics
are still the safest way to go (although PDF graphics can also do the
job now).

I hope I got that all right.

You might also want to look at using the popular BookVars plugin. It
lets you easily define a set of variables (one for each product), then
pop them into the book with a couple of clicks. It's easy and a real

Re: [Framers] Searching for content in FrameMaker files

2016-05-10 Thread Mike Wickham
I'm not sure if you've tried this, or if it will work, but in the search
indexing options, there is an Advanced button that opens Advanced
Options. On the File Types tab in that window is a section, "How should
this file be indexed?" Options are "Index Properties Only" and "Index
Properties and File Contents." Perhaps you need to change that setting
for the .fm file type? I notice that my .fm extension was set to "File
Properties filter." When I changed it to also index content, the file
type now shows "Plain Text Filter" next to it. I didn't test whether or
not it changed the indexing.

Re: [Framers] Cannot get FM to drop the even-numbered blank page

From the book file, check the settings for the next file in the book.
If, for example, your file ends on a right-hand page, but the next file
is set to start on a right-hand page, then FrameMaker is forced to add a
blank left-hand page in between.

Re: [Framers] Best way to replace one template with another without using plugins?

2016-04-12 Thread Mike Wickham
If the paragraph/character tag names are all the same in the new
template, you can select all the files in the book and then import the
formats. Any formats that are the same name will be overwritten. Any in
the old document that don't exist in the new template, will be left
untouched, and any formats that exist in the new template, but not the
document, will be added. This could leave you with formats that you no
longer want and would want to manually delete.

The Paragraph Tools and Character Tools plugins
fromhttp://siliconprairiesoftware.com
<http://siliconprairiesoftware.com>let you create a conversion list that
can rename formats from one name to another in a single stroke, making
it easy to import from a new template that has different format names.

Re: [Framers] slow-scrolling images

2016-04-08 Thread Mike Wickham

John,

Another thing to check is whether or not you have the Insets pod open in
the file. If open when you load the file, FrameMaker loads all the
images before it displays the file (and, of course, populates the info
in this pod). This makes the file open slowly, but, once open, the
images appear instantly as you scroll. On the other hand, if the Insets
pod is closed when the file is opened, the file opens quickly, but the
images don't load until you scroll to them. So changing your workspace
could give the appearance that the images are suddenly loading slower
than they used to.

It may make a difference, too, depending on your preference setting for
Hide Panels on Close. Check to be sure that it is unchecked. If I recall
correctly, checking this setting box means that closing the Insets panel
just hides it, but it is still in the background. So the file still
wants to take time to update it.

Re: [Framers] Shrinkwrapping

I'm not aware of any way to change it, except to manually drag the
handles of the anchored frame. You can change the offset of the image
from the top left corner of the anchored frame to zero (in object
properties), so that it butts against that corner, but you have to
manually drag the diagonal corner to remove the other extra space.

0.353mm is equivalent to one typographic point. Presumably, FrameMaker leaves a
1 pt border around the image so that we can see the anchored frame that holds
it.

Re: [Framers] 2015 Release, miniTOC

2016-02-18 Thread Mike Wickham
Yes, the built-in mini TOC generator of FM 2015 creates only one mini
TOC per file, but you can manually create as many mini TOCs as you want,
using cross-references. They can be made to automatically fill in
heading text, page number, etc. of the TOC list items, but a manually
made TOC won't automatically add a new list items to itself.

So, if you make a manual mini TOC of Heading1 paragraphs, and add a new
Heading1 paragraph in the document, you will have to manually add a new
list item and appropriate cross-references to the mini TOC.

Re: Text Inset vs. Variable Question (UNCLASSIFIED)

2014-12-10 Thread Mike Wickham
It sounds like you are on the right track, using a single file to create
variables and then importing them. Too bad you can't install third party
software, because I think the only way to make this easier would be to
use the inexpensive BookVars plugin:

I'm getting back to unstructured FrameMaker 10 (after two years of
having to use MS Word). So apologies if I don't use some of the
correct terms or if I'm misunderstanding some of FrameMaker's
capabilities!

I'm doing the planning work for converting a technical manual from MS
Word into FrameMaker 10. The system has over 100 parts, currently each
part has two to five different variations on the name scattered
throughout the manual, so a huge component of this conversion is
getting the nomenclature down to a single version of each part name.
Since most of the names will change at some point in the next year my
goal is a single point of edit for each part name, to save some
headaches down the road.

On previous projects I've used ~20 part name variables (created in a
master file, then applied to each *.fm file through a book update) and
then inserted that part's variable any time I need to use the part
name. For this project with 100+ parts it seems like that could start
getting painful, just in terms of scrolling through a massive variable
list.

I was thinking that I could use text insets as another option, if it
were possible to import from a single cell in a table (e.g. excel
file). That would let me use the spreadsheet that I'd have to create
anyway for planning out the variables (and internal tracking of what
name I'm assigning to a given part number).

In the past I've used text insets to reference repeated short
paragraphs, using a series of individual text documents to hold each
paragraph. So I guess I could do the same thing again, but then I'd
end up with 100+ text files, which seems like a different kind of
inconvenient compared to the 100+ variables.

One major limitation: with my organization's network policies I cannot
install 3^rd party software, and the review and approval process to
purchase extensions or supplements to Adobe's software would be so
arduous that it may as well be impossible. So I'm limited to what I
can do without having to install anything else.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated! (Or even advice on
where I could go to read up on the various ways to effectively manage
nomenclature updates in unstructured FrameMaker.)

Thanks,

First, I'm not sure what you mean by using a virtual machine.

I don't know how to best explain it, but a virtual machine is basically
a software program, like Virtual PC, that runs on your computer. It
creates an, artificial computer in memory, where you install the
operating system of choice. Once the virtual machine is created, when
you run it, the experience is exactly like working on a computer with
that operating system. Multiple virtual machines can be installed on the
same computer. So, a person might have one each for XP, Vista, Windows
7, etc. installed on a single computer.

Here are a couple of links for the virtual machine software from
Microsoft, which is probably the most commonly used:

Re: mouse alternative

2014-11-11 Thread Mike Wickham
Even better, get a trackball. You rest your hand in place and only move
your thumb (plus occasionally click with a finger). Plus, you never run
into that PITA issue where your mouse goes off the edge of the mouse
pad, but you need to scroll further, so you have to lift the mouse, pull
it back toward you, and set it down to continue scrolling-- sometimes
multiple times. With a trackball, you only lift your thumb. (Or set the
scroll rate to encompass the whole screen in one thumb swipe.) I've been
using a trackball for years and would never go back to a mouse. Here are
a couple from Logitech. I use an older model similar to the M570:

Re: FM9 Crashes when Creating PDFs with files that Contain PDFs (WAS: Frame 9 Crashing – Can’t Create PDFs)

2014-10-25 Thread Mike Wickham
I thought I recalled Dov Isaacs explaining this as a Windows problem,
rather than a FrameMaker problem. I found the following quote from him
online, which appears to reference what was later called the
fntcache.dat bug (and fixed with a hotfix and, later, Windows update),
and a Windows bug relating to large page sizes and large fonts. I don't
know if that one was ever fixed and may still require setting a lower
dpi as a workaround. (I would note that I have no text or image dropout
at 1200 dpi on Windows 7.)

NOTE: The following is a 10-year old quote:
(2) There is a known problem with FrameMaker under Windows only in
which text may disappear from the output page (i.e., selective text
dropout) when printing to PostScript devices, including Acrobat
Distiller. Unfortunately, the problem is NOT reproducible from system to
system or document to document either user sites or within Adobe itself.
What we do know is that the larger the logical page size in combination
with higher resolution settings aggravates the problems (i.e., makes it
more likely that you will actually see the symptom). It is for this
reason that we most strongly recommend that you NEVER use a Windows
PostScript printer driver setting higher than 600 dpi with FrameMaker.
If necessary to print to a higher resolution device, create PDF first
(with the Adobe Distiller / Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance
set to no more than 600 dpi) and then do the final print from Acrobat /
Adobe Reader to the actual print device. In the rare instances where
there is still selective text dropout, set the driver resolution to 300
dpi. We know of no situations in which the selective text dropout
persists at the 300 dpi setting. What are the ramifications of the lower
resolution settings? The resolution of image data is not downsampled or
degraded by this resolution setting. Nor is any damage done to vector
graphics or the quality of text. What it does control for FrameMaker is
the granularity of spacing, especially of text. Setting 600 dpi permits
only 600 starting positions per inch and interword spacing in 1/600
inch increments. Images and vector graphics positioning is likewise
limited to such increments. At 300 dpi, the value falls to 300 starting
positions and 1/300 inch increments. Anything under 300 dpi is
absolutely not recommended and could yield some rather gnarly text
spacing. Again, we recommend you start at 600 dpi and stay with that if
you have no problems. (Note also that 600 dpi gets around another
Windows GDI bug in which text formatted in larger point sizes is
converted to unhinted outlines. 600 dpi allow for text in pointsizes up
to approximately 100 points to remain as text for printing purposes.)

On 10/25/2014 10:40 AM, Heiko Haida wrote:

Hi Alison,

A3 format: The content was displayed partially, the page was not
completely shown (without error message).
First I thought the graphic files were corrupt, as taking out the
graphics would at least produce a PDF.

Then I found that the distiller profile was set to 2400 dpi, and after
reducing this to 1200 dpi everything was fine.

I don't like it, but it seems FM has some internal memory problems here.

Maybe this also applies to your problem.

Re: FrameMaker: mysterious font substitution in PDF

2014-10-24 Thread Mike Wickham
Adding to Stuart's answer, if this is a situation where Windows is
reading a printer-resident version of Helvetica from a Postscript
printer-- rather than using a font that is actually installed on the
computer--, the situation is usually easily fixable. The printer
installation disk should contain a folder that holds all the
printer-resident fonts. You canmanually install any that you want on the
computer and they will then be embeddable in a PDF.

There is a warning related to Helvetica, though. There is a Windows or
Internet Explorer bug (I forget which), which causes Web pages to
display blank if they contain Helvetica as the first listed font in CSS
and the Postscript version of Helvetica is installed on the computer. So
if you start seeing blank Web pages in your browser, try uninstalling
Helvetica from your computer-- or replace it with the OpenType version.

Mike Wickham
Are you sure the client actually has Helvetica on their system, and
that Adobe PDF is their default printer (at least when using FM -- see
Sundorne Setprint plugin)? It's possible their hardware printer is
reporting the presence of Helvetica to the operating system, so that
it appears to be present, but a printer-resident font can't be
embedded in PDF.

Here are a few tips if you plan to send to a print company:

1. Use EPS or PDF graphics. FrameMaker normally passes everything
through the Windows GDI, which converts CMYK graphics back to RGB. EPS
and PDF graphics are passed around the GDI, unchanged.

2. In maker.ini, set GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK=None. This gives the
best match of screen and PDF colors.

3. In Distiller, check the color management settings of your PDF Preset
(.joboptions file). For Settings Edit Adobe PDF Settings Color Tab
Color Management Policies, do not set Tag Everything for Color
Management. This can cause text to print as four colors instead of
black only.

Hope that helps.

Re: Insets and Tables: container paragraphs with no additional spacing

Stuart,

I haven't had need to work with text insets, but I'm wondering if you
can shorten your procedure by inserting the non-breaking space into the

add it where you want. Have you tried it?

In the inset source document, create a variant tag based on the last
paragraph of the inset (e.g., BodyInsetLast as a variant of Body):

Spacing Below Pgf: --12.0 pt (negative 12 points)
Apply that tag to the last paragraph of the inset.

In the container document, create a new empty paragraph where you want
the inset to go.

Tag the paragraph InsetAnchor.
In that paragraph, type a non-breaking space (to overcome the bug that
reformats the paragraph on updating the inset).

Place your cursor just before the non-breaking space and import the inset.

Re: Structured: about containers, other matter and chapter numbering

2014-08-17 Thread Mike Wickham
I can't give advice on structured FrameMaker, but an easy way to make
the correct title appear on the running header of an unstructured book
is to use numbering properties. I assume the same applies to structured
books.

1. In the files' appropriate master pages, insert the $volnum variable
in the running header in a background text frame.
2. In the book file, select all files from one novella, then right-click
and choose Numbering Properties.
3. On the Volume tab, click the Volume # radio button. Enter your
novella title in the dialog box, and choose Text as the format. That's
right. Numbering does not have to be numbering. It can be static text.

4. Click set.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the files in the second novella.

A novella is the simplest kind of document. It is basically straight
text and not likely to have graphics, lots of variables,
cross-references, hyperlinks, etc. It's not likely to even have many
types of paragraph or character formats. I think setting it up as a
structured document is probably overkill and a lot of unnecessary work.
I would set it up using simple, unstructured documents, with properly
assigned paragraph and character formats.

Re: Reproducible FM12 file corruption?

I'll be darned if I know what is triggering it.

Let's find out if it's just my installation/environment or if it affects others.

I'm running TCS5 under Windows 7, 64-bit Enterprise.

To try to eliminate character paragraph format catalog issues and template
anomalies, once I was able to reproduce the behavior, I tried doing the same in a
generic FM file, and am also seeing the behavior there, so that's what I'm going to
walk through. I've included screenshots of what I see along the way.

1. Create a new file using the default Portrait blank paper.

http://www.taxschool.illinois.edu/images/fm/fm12-1.png

2. Copy in a few paragraphs of generic text (I use www.lipsum.com).

http://www.taxschool.illinois.edu/images/fm/fm12-2.png

3. Save the file.

4. Place your cursor in one of the paragraphs.

5. In the Paragraph Designer, change the Spread to 1% and hit Enter to Apply.

http://www.taxschool.illinois.edu/images/fm/fm12-3.png

6. Save the file.

7. Press Ctrl+z to undo.

8. WHAMMO!

http://www.taxschool.illinois.edu/images/fm/fm12-4.png

On my system, the margins change completely, as if room for side heads was
added. In my main working file it also put footnotes in the middle of pages.

Also, it's not just any kind of change prior to a save and then undo that
triggers the corruption. Simple text edits do not trigger it, however changes
in the paragraph and character designers do. It's not just font attributes, but
changing paragraph attributes and applying them, followed by a save and undo
will also trigger the corruption. Changing the color of selected text via the
tool palette, save, undo, will also trigger it.

It appears to be the sequence of (1) anything involving changing *ATTRIBUTES*
of text, (2) a save, and (3) an immediate undo, that triggers it. If I do the
above steps without a save, the undo does not cause the corruption. It's as if
reverting to a pre-save state makes FM go haywire.

Now that I know what triggers the page going nuts, I now know what to avoid
doing. I would experience this periodically since I'm a save-monkey, and
wouldn't know what the heck was going on.

Bizarre.

Your FM8 templates should work fine in FM12 and you've already

You said you lost your FM8 disk. It probably wouldn't work anyway, since
there was a Windows change that broke it. You can download a fixed

Re: Having problems with importing an EPS file into FrameMaker ...

2014-03-06 Thread Mike Wickham
If your EPS graphic is a vector drawing, I would not follow Alison's
suggestion to save as a PNG bitmap. That will greatly degrade the
drawing by rasterizing it. EPS handles vectors perfectly, resizing them
without degradation. Of course, they still look awful inside
FrameMaker-- because FM only shows you a low-res preview to save
computer memory. But the vector will look perfect in PDF. Even if the
viewer of the PDF zooms in, the vector will resize without degradation.

Re: search with RegExp RE: Now OT, I suppose. RE: Adobe pricing policies

2014-01-30 Thread Mike
My question was ignored many times during the webinar. Do the search
enhancements include finding matches in included files? Currently, the only
way I can search for strings in my books that single-source included files
is to generate a PDF and search in it.

  Mike,

You are correct. That was my post. The point I was making was that if
you subscribe for 2 years (no SW maintenance fees required) you are bound
 to get another release.

Regardless of how much someone may just not like FrameMaker 12, it
would be difficult to accept this as a minor release. Product development
has speeded up addition of time-saving features over what we experienced
 7-9 years ago.

Help with book folders and groups in structured docs

2014-01-30 Thread Mike
I am interested in the folder and group functionality for books, but cannot
seem to get it to work. If I try to put topics in individual files in
folders or groups, it seems to break the structure. I put the Chapter
element in the first file of a folder or group, then put the Topic elements
in files below that file. It looks like Frame cannot handle this situation.

If that is the case, I guess I don't see the benefit or purpose of folders
and groups in books.

2014-01-27 Thread Mike Wickham
I don't have the original message handy, but I think the original poster
was saying that at least the last three FrameMaker releases have been on
an 18-month cycle. We get a new version of FM every year and a half.
This was previously the case with Creative Suite software, too.

2014-01-23 Thread Mike Wickham
Guys, you keep emphasizing that I used a quote of Dov's from 10 years
ago-- and I did (9 years ago, actually). But I also included one other
quote and a link to third message in the same post. These were from
times more recent. One was from 2010, which was only one version back in
Acrobat. I'd call that a recent quote. I'm also sure I've seen Dov say
similar later, I just couldn't quickly find a quote to include.

Anyway, do what you want regarding mixing Acrobat and Reader, but it's
not really fair to grab the oldest quote of three and claim it makes all
the advice old.

I don't normally feel it is necessary. My understanding has always been
that Reader is basically the viewing portion of Acrobat. So if it
doesn't look right in one, it won't look right in the other. I see
Acrobat as Reader, plus a bunch of other features that we have to pay
for. I don't know if that's accurate, but it's my impression.

Having said that, there are a few times that I've found it necessary to
check a file in Reader (on a separate computer). I've never seen any
differences in _appearance_ (assuming that I remembered to embed all
fonts, which I always do because I have my joboptions set to do so by
default), but I have seen problems in functionality. Examples include
forms that didn't work in Reader, but did work in Acrobat, because I had
some setting wrong. Or the review feature not working-- again, because
it wasn't set up right beforehand. So I may check a form in Reader, or a
PDF being sent out for review.

Re: OT: Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Reader on same client

2014-01-21 Thread Mike Wickham
Here are some quotes from Dov Isaacs of Adobe, one of our patron saints
around here:

/Although you CAN have both Reader and Acrobat installed
simultaneously//(assuming the same version), it is very strongly NOT
RECOMMENDED for a//number of very good reasons. It certainly does not
add any functionality//to one's system..//.

/
//
/- Dov ///

Here's a link explaining some reasons why:
http://www.mail-archive.com/pdf@lists.pdfzone.com/msg03152.html

I am sure we will get the inevitable responses from members of this
list that boast about how they have multiple versions and/or mixtures of
Acrobat and Reader concurrently installed and somehow get some or most
of the functionality to work for them. On the other hand, there are a
tremendous number of problems reported to Adobe that are suddenly
cleared up when the user's systems are scraped of all concurrent
versions of Acrobat and Reader, replaced by a single version of one or
another. (Note that by Acrobat I mean any and all pieces of it
including the Distiller, the AdobePDF PostScript printer driver
instance, and the viewing program!)

But, some list members will complain, how do I know what the
recipients of my PDF file will see on their systems if I also don't have
a copy of Reader installed, or perhaps multiple versions of Reader and
Acrobat installed? The response to that is to have test systems (or
separate test partitions of your one system) that have minimal software
installations (especially fonts) and a copy of the target version of
Adobe Reader. That is the only way to truly simulate the user
experience. For that matter, old, slower systems are even more appropriate!

  - Dov

I got the above results using Dov Isaacs Reader Acrobat on same
computer as a search term on Google. There are more results.

I think the bottom line is that putting Reader and Acrobat on the same
computer is not wise, but if you risk it, make sure both are the same
version. You would be better off to set up a Windows Virtual PC with
only default operating system and fonts if you feel the need to test a
Reader view. Even then, which version of Reader will you test? Users use
different ones. And don't forget to embed all fonts.

Re: FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-17 Thread Mike Wickham
Syed, I think your math is right on. I can't understand why anyone would
pay more for a subscription that will render their software useless the
moment they stop paying. If they fall on hard times, the perpetual
license lets them at least keep working with their software as long as
they can keep a compatible operating system on an old computer.

If the issue is someone not being able to come up with the upgrade fee
all at once, and a monthly payment sounds more attractive, then they
should consider getting a short term bank loan (or put it on a credit
card) and pay the bank an even smaller monthly payment to buy the
perpetual license.

And here's another thing, if a company thinks a monthly subscription is
a better to budget, they might also want to think about the resale value
of their company, should they ever want to sell it. A perpetual license
is an asset that can be resold and adds value to a company. A
subscription is future liability that reduces its value. If, as an
individual, they ever want to stop using FrameMaker, they can resell
their personal perpetual license and get some of their money back. Not
so with a subscription.

I used to buy every upgrade of Creative Suite until it switched to the
Creative Cloud model. Now, CS6 is my last purchase in that line. I won't
pay big money for software that turns off completely if I stop paying.
I've also bought every FM upgrade since version 6, except for v10, which
offered no features that I needed. I will be buying the FM 12 upgrade
for sure. But I will be done buying if FM ever goes to the
subscription-only model.

Those of you buying subscriptions are making it more and more likely
that the rest of us will lose the perpetual upgrade option in the near
future. If you look at how hard Adobe is trying to get people to buy
subscriptions, you will see that it is their desire to move FrameMaker
to that model. Let's not let them take away our choices.

An upgrade is $399 for that same upgrade in that 18 month period, right? And
then the license is perpetual (at least until Adobe abandons this model in the
future entirely), so that version keep working once somebody stops upgrading
(not so in the subscription case when cancelled).
