Nonetheless, I took them down a notch or so, to see if that will help.

Subject: Cursor blink rate affects FrameMaker stability?

Three writers on my team reported too-frequent crashes in FrameMaker
8, especially notable because it crashed disproportionately during
idle time. (As opposed to crashes during one of our extremely complex
FrameScripts that run 20 minutes or more... those usually completed
fine.) We do not have any fancy keystroke interception code in
FrameScript. Well, not yet anyway, I have a plan for some soon. :-)
So, I wouldn't expect that any of our code affects this Idle-Crash
issue. So, anyway i noticed one of the writers had a cursor that was
blinking weird, irregularly. I checked the windows setting in: Start
-> Control Panel -> Keyboard -> Cursor Blink Rate.

His blink rate was set to the MAXIMUM setting. I set it down a couple
notches. And his crashing problem went away! The two other writers
checked their setting for that, and theirs were set to the MINIMUM
setting (no blink). They set theirs UP a couple notches. And their
crashing problems reportedly also went away too!

Perhaps this is superstitious, but these three writers believe this
change was what made stability improve. It's possible this issue is
specific to folks with FrameScript, I have no idea. We all use
FrameScript. I could easily imagine this being a system event Idle
issue either in FrameMaker, FrameScript, or both.

Anyway, if you are having crashing problems in FrameMaker, try setting
this setting to somewhere in the *middle* of the range and see if that
helps. If this change reduces your crashes noticably, PLEASE REPLY on
the forum to this post with more information about your configuration.
For example, that would clarify whether this is unique to FM8 or
affects FM9 also, and whether this affects non-FrameScript users!

Configuration for the team:
* Win XP SP3 32bit
(except 1 writer w/ 64bit, who was 1 of the 3 with the issue)
* FrameMaker 8.0p277
* FrameScript 5.2R1 (some might be R2)

For the record, there are other writers on the team, including me, who
weren't experiencing these crashes. At least two of us had middle-of-
the-range settings for this value (and no "idle time" crashes), I'm
not sure about the other two writers.

Others have pointed out that you are viewing file names and must rename
the file to meet your objective. But perhaps all you really want is to
see the first heading in each file instead of the file name? In the
book window, there are four icons in the lower right; the leftmost of
them toggles between file names and headings in the list of book contents.

Right pg, table and figure numbering

2009-10-05 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi All,

---
Also, my table numbering got messed up - occasionally, the title is repeated
twice for the same table, one is showing as a body style and one is part of the
table format, which obviously ruins the table numbering.

Checkpoint 1: It looks like I can delete the title that is showing up as a
"body" style. It's just that not all the tables are using the title that is
part of the Table Design Style - such as - Format A and so on.

1. Most important first, how do I fix the pagination?

2. How do I fix the tables and figure numbering.

3. I Need to save the book file and the individual files on share point, I
would like to give this a new version for an internal release - such as
version 3.2.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Two additional points:

-- There are cases where the hypertext markers are all valid, yet the
resulting link is very small due to the character format affecting the
marker only (eg when copying a gotolink marker from one paragraph to
another, with the two paragraphs having different character properties).
You can fix this by first applying "default paragraph font" to the entire
area, then apply the required character format to the link text.
The link location/size can be inspected in Acrobat (when the Link tool is
active).

-- If the link works in FrameMaker (view only document, or regular document
with Ctrl-Alt-click), but not in Acrobat: in FrameMaker's PDF Setup dialog
box, turn on "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs" (Links tab).
A sample FM7 files which demonstrates a valid hypertext marker resulting in
a non-functional link is available at:
http://www.microtype.com/resources/bugs/dests_hypertext.zip ; the PDF link
is fine when turning on "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs".

Sue,

If you create a new link and give it the identifier "checklist" (as in your
"what I am doing" procedure) then you should use that same ID as the
destination when you insert the "Jump to Named Destination" hypertext marker.
Perhaps it was inadvertent, but your example has different 'names' and I would
not expect it to work, either in FM or PDF. Also note that the names are
case-sensitive, so "checklist" and "CheckList" are different destination names.
You will still see the hand pointer (as you hover over the hypertext marker),
but because the names don't match, the jump can't find the target to move the
insertion point.

The "validate" function only really verifies that you have the syntax correct
for the marker you're adding, not that the command will work as expected.
After all, you could enter the "goto" commands first, then define the
destinations as the second step...

You can test a link by temporarily locking the document via Save as View Only
or the escape sequence Esc F l k (four separate key presses: escape, Capital-F,
lowercase-L lowercase-K ; this toggles the locked or "view-only" state of the
document) or just hold the control and alt keys together as you hover over the
hypertext marker.

I hope this helps.

I have been reading and following the help files and the User Guide for
days now. I cannot successfully and consistently make a simple link within the
same document.

It looks like you need to save as "View Only" in order to activate the
link. I have done that and also saved regular and I cannot get the link to
jump from point A to point B
or in other words to go from the "new link" to the "specified
destination".

Here is what I am doing.

1. Select the word or phrase that is the destination
2. ; Go to Special>Hypertext
3. In the Command box, select "Specify Named Destination"
4. In the Syntax box it says "newlink" and then next to that I type
in the word to be found "checklist" all lower case
5. The checkbox for "Validate Command upon Insertion is checked
6. Click on "New Hypertext Marker"

then I go to the starting point

1. Select the word or phrase that will be marked as the starting
point
2. Go to Special>Hypertext
3. In the Command box, select "Jump to Named Destination"
4. In the Syntax box it says "gotolink" and then next to that I type
in the word that was used at the destination point "server" all lowercase
5. The checkbox for "Validate Command upon Insertion is checked
6. Click on "New Hypertext Marker"

So, now from here is apparently where I get lost.

If I save as "view only", I will get the hand pointer and it looks like
it will work.

However, if I click on it, nothing happens.

If I make a PDF, nothing happens.

Please, what am I missing?

Help wth hyperlinks_Please

2009-09-08 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Les,

Sorry about that, my example is wrong... I am using the word ... checklist
... all lower case at both the "go to" and "destination" spots.

I will work through your answer and see if it works.

Thanks,
Sue

I assume you have used images in the folder, and that the file you are
adding to the book also uses images from the same folder. Moving their
location is not very problematic, just put the folders where you want
them to be and when you open one of the files with links to the moved
images folder FM will complain that it can't find images. In the
dialog that opens, navigate to the new folder location and when you
select it, all image links will be updated at once for that file.

Hi Sue,

The table was probably imported into FrameMaker from Word and so the
alternating shading are considered overrides to the default table shading.
Here is how to fix it:

1) Select the entire table.
2) Choose Table > Custom Ruling and Shading
3) Uncheck the Custom Cell Ruling checkbox and check the Custom Cell Shading
checkbox.
4) Choose From Table under both Fill and Color popup menus.
5) Click the Apply button.

This will remove the overrides from the table. Now you can set the
alternating shading in the Table Designer and it should work as you add and
delete rows. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank
you very much.

Hi All,
Using FMKR 7.0, Acrobat Distiller 5.0, on Vista Enterprise on HP
(Compaq) laptop.
I do not have the full Acrobat 5.0 program, on this system. But, I could
take the FMKR file to my own pc and use Acrobat 5.0 and then bring it back
to this laptop.

Question:

I have a large (17pgs) table for my glossary.

The rows are alternating colors - light and medium shade of the same color.
However, the header top row and the left column - are a solid color.

Now, we are adding and deleting some of these glossary entries.

Is there a way to have the alternate row colors update automatically?
I have already gone into the Table Designer and I am working with the shade
settings, but not much luck yet.

I inherited this table - I think the alternate coloring was done with copy /
paste.

Thanks,
Sue

Reminder: FM 7.0 on Vista Enterprise. Acrobat Distiller 5.0.

Thank you for these instructions, changing the colors of the rows worked great!
However, I need to keep the left column solid, a darker shade of the rows.

Thanks,
Sue

I inherited this table - I think the alternate coloring was done with copy /
paste.

Thanks,
Sue

Susan:

Do you have Adobe Acrobat? You can renumber the pages there, including giving
the cover the "number" Cover. Then you can reset the "open to page" option to
Cover.

If you need me to elaborate, let me know.

Solved RE: New Topic 1 _ Title out of aliignment

2009-06-17 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi All,
This issue has been solved. The alignment = Left and so on were okay. I
went to another file that used the same header style, to see all the settings,
clicked on Update all. Then used the correct file as a base and imported
formats into the problem file -- title now is aligned correctly.

Thank You.

FYI, the list software strips attachments.

Off the top of my head, I'd check the Paragraph Tag and make sure the
following is true:

* Alignment -- Left
* First -- 0"
* Left -- 0"

You may also want to check the Master page and see if you have Sideheads set up.

Hope that helps.

RE: New Topic: Sort by number

2009-05-27 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi All,

Thanks again for your help.
Frame 7 on Vista Enterprise

Yes, I did take a small sample and used the table in Frame to sort by columns,
that looks okay, but will this retain the links like a regular TOC, can I make
this a generated list and remove the table borders?

The titles of the Work Instructions do have a paragraph tag and currently
presented as shown below on the first page of the Work Instruction. This
generates fine as a Table of Contents.

Current Set Up: (only in the order as presented in each chapter, no alpha or
numeric order)
Gone With the Wind (023)
StarTrek (012)
The L.A. Story (063)

Want to be Set Up: (a new generated list to put all 60+ titles in numeric
order)I have the alpha order to work with, I can move the WI number to the
front of the title, just need to make it with links. I can place them in a
table and do the sort by column -- then what?

012 StarTrek
023 Gone With the Wind
063 The L.A. Story

This new arrangement would provide the users (floor technicians and trainers) a
faster way to locate the Work Instruction in the Runbook. With a generated
list, then in the PDF file, they can point and click, just like in the TOC.

Finally, I want to name this list as a Quick Index and place it at the end of
the book. Can I do that as an appendix, or leave it as a generated file and
simply move it to the end of the book file?

Thanks,
Sue

Assuming the "work instructions" are controlled by a unique paragraph
tag, that would be the default order if you generate a TOC for the
book or file and only specify that type of tag. The links are
generated automatically when you generate a PDF for the book if you
activate the Acrobat functions from the Print dialog box.

HI ALL,

Using FMKR 7.0, Acrobat Distiller 5.0, Vista Enterprise on HP laptop.

Thanks so much for all your help with the alpha sort last week. Now, the team
wants me to sort by number.

For example: 023 StarTrek, 012 Gone With the Wind, 063 The L.A. Story.
We want to have the names of the Work Instructions listed by their
corresponding number, like this:

012 StarTrek
023 Gone With the Wind
063 The L.A. Story

So far what I have done is to copy a small test section of my alpha file to
Word, sort by number and then take it back to FrameMaker. However, then, I
don't have the hyperlink to the FM file anymore.

Any suggestions to get the same results as the alpha sort -- only need to point
and click in the final PDF to access the desired file?

New Topic: Sort by number

2009-05-26 Thread Susan Curtzwiler

Thanks,

Hi All,
Thank you all for your help with the alpha sort. Now, I have an alphabetized
list of my Work Instructions (WI) in an appendix, that's great.
However, how do I make a separation with A, B, C and so on to break up this

I have entered A, B, C with and without tags, but when I generate the book, it
naturally sorts these letters and they all jump to the top of the page. I
realize that's because that would be the alphabetical order - so what is the
magic key to make these introductory letters stay in place? Does it have
anything to do with using the ignore symbols function? However, these are not

I don't know what a WI number is, but maybe if you spend some quality

figure out how to do something with that, too. FM's generated lists

I don't understand. But again, List of > Paragraphs (Alphabetical) will
give you alpha lists of whatever paragraph format(s) you want (like
Head1, Head2, ...).

I don't know what a WI number is, but maybe if you spend some quality
time with the generated lists topics in the help or user manual, you can
figure out how to do something with that, too. FM's generated lists
functionality is pretty robust and versatile.

RE: Exporting the paths of graphics used

2009-05-19 Thread Susan Curtzwiler

Hi,
I'd like to join this email about making a list of figures in alpha order.

I followed the directions below and all I got was a blank FMKR page.
Then I went to just make a list of figures as a stand alone file, not part of
the book file.
That worked great, I got the list.
1. Now, how do I alphabatize them.
2. Isn't there a simple sort feature like Word? Seems like then I could make
the sorted list as a template and work thru the entire book.
3. Is their an easier way to work within the complete book file to get a full
list of figures at one time?
4. Also, make a list of tables.

I want to use this same technique to make a list of the titles from my TOC, and
arrange them either by WI number or alpha to create a quick hyperlink file for
users easy reference.

Using FM7.0, Adobe Distiller 5.0, Vista Enterprise.

Thnaks,
Sue

Sure. From the Special menu, generate a List of -> References (or
an Index of -> References, if you prefer them alphabetical), and
select Imported Graphics as what to include.

Hi All,
I forgot to mention, that I am using FrameMaker 7.0, Adobe Distiller 5.0,
and SnagIt 9 on Vista Enterprise.

I also use the distiller to create the PDF, not Save As a PDF.
Remember, even if your Frame image looks a little 'out of focus' they are
always better in PDF. You might want to run a quick PDF just so you can see
they will be okay, if you are having problems with a few 'difficult' images.

Hi All,
I just completed a large project - about 240 screen captures - that were
captured in SnagIt and imported by reference into the FrameMaker files.
I agree with the last comment, to import at a setting that best accepts the
size of your image, and as stated, do not use the corner handles to manually
adjust your images.

I used SnagIt with two options: the region (static images) and the time delayed
(drop-down menus).

We decided to run test samples, since our screens varied in size.

The decision was to use a range of DPI settings depending on the size of the
screen capture.

Basically, I used a DPI range of 72 to 144 from the small (like the error
message box size) to the very large, (like the capture of a database screen).
From that point, once I got a good DPI size, if further adjustments were
needed, I used the FMKR scale tool and adjusted by percentage to maintain the
smoothing and aspect ratio.

Results: The training staff liked the improved images.

This process was adapted from info I gathered from this users group, so I hope
sharing the results helps.

Good Luck,

All,

I know that there are many graphics gurus on this list and I will be the
first to admit - I am NOT a graphics guru and it is my weakest point. That
said, I have never had any comments from clients until now about what I do
for screen captures, and I wanted either confirmation or some additional
insight on improvements for taking screen captures.

Here is the current comment from a client: Generally, I would like to keep
high quality of screen captures.

Would like to suggest using a tool that can downscale the images with a
smoothing function to keep high quality appearance. (as appear here, this is
just sub-sampling with no smoothing.)

I use SnagIt as my capture tool. I use the region option and capture either
the relevant portion that I need or if required, I take a capture of the
whole screen. I then save the capture as a .png, and use the import file
function to bring the capture into my Framemaker file. Obviously, the
default dpi is set to the fictitious Windows 96 dpi. I change the capture to
150 dpi and import. If this works for size and clarity, then I am done; if
not, I right-click on the picture and adjust the dpi until I get the size
that works for the page layout and what I am trying to show. (After much
reading on this list, and advice from another colleague, I have learned that
what I was initially taught at a long ago gig - to set the dpi to 300 and
then use the manual sizing handles - is NOT the way to go).

Can any of you graphics gurus give me some insight as to what else I should
be doing/changing or if I am doing it the right way - and if you want to
lecture me off list about dpis and stuff, that is fine with me too. I will
gladly take whatever information I can glean so that I can reply
professionally and non-emotionally to this client about why the pictures
are just fine for PDFs.

Thanks so much,

TVB

   5. Used MIF again after the above fixes - still - I cannot run this chapter.

NOTE - it will run through just great as a lone file - outside of a book file,

I had this happen just the other day. Washing as MIF didn't help.

I saved as MIF, opened the MIF file in a text editor, and searched for
the font name (in this case, "Times-Roman"). This turned up one tag that did not seem to be wrapping any text. I removed
the entire tag section, and this fixed the problem.

Compile Book_Wrong Font msg

2009-04-25 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi All,

FrameMaker 7.0
Acrobat Distiller 5.0
Vista Enterprise on a Compaq laptop.

I am working with a book file of 5 chapters and 2 appendices.

I could please use help with two problems.

1. One of the chapters [ only this chapter] will not compile - I get a
message about unavailable fonts. Everything is Arial.

2. Regarding the Appendix title. I have Appendix A and Appendix B showing up
in the PDF file, side bar.
However, it does not show up with the full name of Appendix ___ in the
actual TOC file. The Chapter titles work fine.

Any insight will be helpful.

Thank You
Sue

What format are they saved in? If it's JPEG, that's part of your
problem. JPEG is optimal for photos, but a poor choice for screen shots,
and often results in blurry text. Switch to PNG.

If these screen captures are from a Windows machine, 96 dpi should be
approximately "life-size" and 150 dpi should be easily readable. I
routinely used 180 dpi for screen shots of an application window about
900 x 500 pixels, making them about 5" wide in the doc. When you say
4x6, are you talking inches? You should be able to insert those into an
8.5 x 11 page life-size or nearly so, and if they're decent quality,
they should be as sharp and clear as the original window from which
they're captured.

You refer to _the_ anchored frame as if it was a given. Can't you use a
larger frame? If necessary, you can rotate the screen shot so its width
can be nearly the height of your text frame (although you shouldn't need
to unless I'm misunderstanding the sizes you're working with or these
screens use really tiny type).

BTW, to maintain the quality of a bitmap graphic, resist the urge to
make it larger or smaller with the mouse. Resize it only by changing the
dpi (best) or setting a round-number scaling percentage (both in the
Object Properties dialog).

Visio to FMKR

2009-03-16 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi all Framers
I need to add some Visio flows (currently in Word) that take up the size of a
full portrait page.
I copied and used paste special > Bitmap into a portrait FrameMaker page. The
Visio fit fine on one page, but it jumped to the next page. I had the cursor
at the top of a regular page.

I'm thinking of creating a Master page with a smaller header to give a little
more space.

Does anyone have other suggestions, or is there any problem with my approach.

Hi All,

FM 7.0 for Window's Vista Enterprise.

I'd like to piggy-back on Jon's post. In addition to seeing the same issues,
the name of the book file seems to always display the full path. My manager
has asked that I clean up that file name and show something simple like the
name of the book. Is there a way to not show the full path?

Hi Everyone,

FM 7.2 for Window.

As you know, in the book file, you can toggle between the files' file
names and their heading text. My question is, what determines the
heading text that is displayed? I have examined my files and notice that
the heading text that is displayed is typically the first major heading
(such as Heading1) that FM encounters in the file but not always. I've
also noticed that for some files (but not all) in the book, FM will
always show the file name even when toggling back and forth.

TOC building

2009-02-13 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi All:

I am using FM7 with Distiller 5 and Vista Enterprise.

I could really use some help with the building blocks of a TOC for a book.
My Frame7 Users Guide tells me that on the Reference page I will find a table
for special text flow for the TOC.

There are several tables on the Ref pages, but nothing clearly marked for TOC
or Indexes.
My concentration right now is to get a TOC with the following formatting
resolved:

1. Chapter numbers to clearly show up and set aside somewhat from the
actual entries (and in the side bar of the PDF).
2. Spacing with leader dots between entry and page number.
3. Show chapter number and page number, such as 2-5.

I have successfully generated the original TOC list, but what am I missing to
get the rest of this finished?

Thanks for your help.

New topic_ Converting Word to FMKR

2009-02-10 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi All
A couple of weeks ago, I successfully used "Import by copy into document"
from Word 2007 to FMKR 7.
Today, all I get in the conversion box is a list of files to choose and it
does not include Word 2007 as a lone option, only Word for Windows 6.0/7.0.
Then, I get an error message: The filter encountered an error and could not
complete the translation. I tried to use three different Word docs.

My coworker and I are using only Word 2007 -- so I can't figure out why this
issue is giving us trouble.

My coworker said he can use copy/paste special just fine. I'm sure it works,
but seems like a work-around that we should not have to use. I thought Frame
was to use these import features to help us.

Is there any problem to use paste/special ? We are converting a 300+ Word doc
to Frame.

Just with the trial samples we have shown - management is very pleased !!!

Thanks,

Frame 7 and PDF

2009-02-05 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi all,
I've seen numerous emails concerning FMKR 8 and 9. Please don't laugh, the
company provided FMKR 7.

I am having trouble with creating a simple PDF file. I have uninstalled FMKR 7
and Acrobat Distiller instance 5.0 and reinstalled both files today (Wednesday,
2/4/09. ) Rebooted from the restart. This did not fix the problem.

I used the Save As and selected PDF, got the normal setup windows, clicked on
Set.
Then, I get a message saying that
"FrameMaker could not find Acrobat Distiller printer instance, which must be
installed to execute Save as PDF command."

I have had IT look this over, and it appears that FMKR 7 and Acrobat Distiller
instance 5.0 are correctly installed.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Frame 7 and PDF

2009-02-04 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi all,
I've seen numerous emails concerning FMKR 8 and 9.

Thanks,
Sue

Regarding MultiLing, the translation service that I recommended: They have
teams in the countries they represent for their services. For example, my
document was sent to Germany. At the location in Germany, there was a product
manager and their team also had a technical background. Therefore, I felt I
could trust their work. They were highly recommended to me by another writer
who had been using them for several years.

However, the fact that you might use a full-service translation firm

used US and European translation companies. In both cases, the actual
work was done in-country by native translators contracting for the
company.

In my case, as a lone writer, I do not have the time or resources to
coordinate translation projects with 9 different people in 9 separate
countries, then take their work and assemble it into a single volume for
printing and distribution. A full-service company, who manages the
project and the individual translators, and gives me a single PDF built
to specification, is the only reasonable solution.

As Diane noted in a separate string, "Check with the vendor and make

I totally agree with you Steve. I'm hired half time in France by an
American
company based in Everett (WA), and we hold call conference on a daily
basis,
there's absolutely no problem with that. We're just asked to wake up
later.
It is no big deal to me. :o))

When you work in the translation business, the first rule is to get your

documents preferably translated by native speakers living in their own
country (not "corrupt" by the language of the country they live in). You

have to contact people living in Japan, Russia, Norway, Brazil, etc. The
Web
is the best way to do it. A translator who does not reply straight away
is a

Re: Translators and Word vs FM

2007-01-04 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
I would like to recommend a translator service in Provo, Utah, MultiLing, Corp.
They prefer FM, but they also work with Word. Ask for Emmanuel or Jeremy and
you can use my name as a reference, Sue Curtzwiler.

This summer, I used MultiLing, Corp, to translate English to German for a
hardware installation manual, graphics included. The only thing I left in
English was any text on screen captures. The manual was in Word and about 65
pages.

They did a great job -- after preliminary estimates and Purchase Orders were
in place, the turnaround time was about 2.5 to 3 weeks.

Current Online help standard

2006-12-05 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Please, what is the current standard for online help?
Is this now built into FrameMaker? Can I use 7.0 or do I need 7.2?

I've heard that RoboHelp is on its way out. If I develop a rather large doc
(~200pgs) in Robo, will I be sorely outdated?

  Thanks,

landscape pages in a portrait book (DOH!)

2006-11-02 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Usability: I tend to agree with your idea about staying with the portrait
pages, just so that it will be easier for the user. Who wants to turn a book
sideways? But if you must... go for the landscape.

On the other hand, here is what I did in Word last year for a similar
problem.
Made a section break, inserted a landscape page, made a new section break.
It actually held together, the hassle was the header and footer.
It sounds like the process Bill Swallow suggested is the equivalent and
easier to handle than making separate files, etc.

Good luck, and please let us know how it worked out.
  Susan Curtzwiler

Bill Swallow wrote:
Usability... no clue on that one. But all you need to do is create
additional master pages using a landscape layout and then apply the
master pages to the necessary body pages. You certainly don't need to
insert files or use separate templates to do this.

general publication quiestion

2006-10-17 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi all,
Is there any hard and fast rule that when you have a blank left page
before a chapter break that you have to label it as "This page intentionally
left blank." ?

It would be much easier if I could use section break for odd pages (yes,
this is using Word) instead of Next Page for a section break. It seems that
when I use the "Odd Page" break, there is no place to enter any text.

I am gradually converting my docs to Frame.

  Thanks,
