Re: [Framers] Getting rid of missing fonts

2018-01-29 Thread Pat Christenson
I have occasionally found "missing fonts" lurking in a table definition. If you
delete Format A and Format B, or replace and delete their default paragraph
formats, the table and paragraph formats are still hanging around (in "deep
cover"). I've been able to correct it in MIF.

Hope this helps,
Pat Christenson

Here's what I've done:

   - Open, save, and close the affected file.
The next time I open the file, the messages should be gone. However, the same
missing font message is displayed.
In the MIF file, I don't find any mention of the missing font. The List of
Fonts in one file doesn't list the font at all. And searching for the font
doesn't help.
What am I doing wrong? I know this is a perennial issue in FrameMaker.

Re: [Framers] Getting rid of missing fonts

2018-01-28 Thread Rob Wallis
If it is a strange font or one you know you haven't used, a better idea is
to search for the character format using that particular font, and remove
it, or change it to a font you do have. This can apply to master and
reference pages as well as body pages.

Which font (exactly) was reported as missing before you tried to get rid of it
by turning off "Remember missing font names"? And which font (exactly) is
reported as missing now?
I'm asking, because FM replaces fonts by a standard mappings (see maker.ini).
And maybe something like "Fontname1 Heavy" was replaced with "Fontname2 Heavy"
(which might be not present as well) or somethings replacement problems come up
with Bold, Italic, BoldItalic replacements.

Re: [Framers] Getting rid of missing fonts

2018-01-24 Thread Craig Ede
You can use the Fonts pod to replace particular missing fonts with a font you
select. That way you don't have relics of an earlier era hanging around hidden
in a table format definition of para formats to use when creating a new table.

I think this is a cleaner way that simply relying on replace missing fonts. I
don't think replace missing fonts updates para tags for things like table
formats that are not currently being used.

Missing Fonts message

2012-09-05 Thread Tammy Van Boening
FM 7, Win 7, 64 bit. For File Preferences General, I have Remember
Missing Font Names Selected. I have inherited a book that if I try to update
w/out opening all of files, I get the message Could not open FileName.fm
because it uses unavailable fonts for every closed, non-generated file in
the book; however, whenever I open any of these files, I do NOT get the
message about Filename. fm using unavailable fonts and stating what font
will be used instead. How do I figure out what fonts are supposedly missing
from these files and get this cleaned up so I can avoid this message if I
don't open every file in the book when updating the book?

the book; however, whenever I open any of these files, I do NOT get the
message about Filename. fm using unavailable fonts and stating what font
will be used instead. How do I figure out what fonts are supposedly missing

don't open every file in the book when updating the book?

TIA,

RE: Missing Fonts message

2012-09-05 Thread Tammy Van Boening
Thanks Rick and Nadine. It's a bit more involved, but it's using the new
feature from 9 that I had to remember : View Pods Fonts with an
offending file open and then select the missing font and click the Replace
icon to select the replacement font.

Hi Tammy,

Go to File > Preferences > Alert Strings and see if the "File contains

FM10 apparently deleted the TOC file and created a new one, reverting
some of the settings, such as page numbering, to defaults. I've had
this happen a few times with FM10.

Good idea on printing the PDF, given the potential problems with
changing printers.

FM10 bug: missing fonts vs. TOC

2012-04-09 Thread Robert Lauriston
Usually my selected printer is Adobe PDF since the main thing I do
with FrameMaker is generate PDFs. I printed some redrafted pages
today, so I selected a LaserJet. I forgot to change back to Adobe PDF,
and the next time I updated the book, I got an error that FrameMaker
was recreating the TOC. The new TOC's settings are wrong, so I need to
retrieve the file from source control.

Seems to me that FM should prompt before taking such a destructive action.

2011-07-01 Thread Combs, Richard
Yves Barbion wrote:

You can map each missing font to its desired replacement in the
[UnknownToKnownFontMap] section of maker.ini. Here are some examples:

AvantGarde, *, *, *=FuturaStd-Medium, *, *, *
Helvetica, *, *, *=Arial, *, *, *
Times, *, *, *=BookAntiqua, *, *, *
Palatino, *, *, *=BookAntiqua, *, *, *

The comments in the file explain the syntax (and the Customizing Framemaker
book helps, IIRC). I recall that for some fonts, getting the name right
required some trial and error. But mostly, it's pretty straight-forward.

Also, in the [Fonts] section, you might want to make your standard body text
the default used to map any other unknown fonts. That might look like this:

DefaultFamily=BookAntiqua
DefaultAngle=Regular
DefaultVariation=Regular
DefaultWeight=Regular
DefaultSize=10

Then in FM, go to File Preferences General and turn of Remember Missing
Font Names. When you open a file with missing fonts, FM prompts you (as usual),
but this time it's to permanently replace the missing fonts. Verify that your
mapping worked and the correct replacements were made before saving the file.

Missing Fonts and FM 9 Remembrance

2011-01-18 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Problem: Every time I open a file with old font issues in FM 9, Frame
dutifully offers to reformat with available fonts. I'd like, as a
general rule, for Frame to just do it and stop asking me a few dozen
times a day.

With FM 7, IIRC, you could turn off the Remember Missing Font Names
under Preferences and get the desired result.

With FM 9, I don't see that option under File-Preferences. Is there a
way to solve my problem with FM 9? If so, please advise.

TCS install; missing fonts

2010-04-22 Thread Stuart Rogers

Win XP SP3
FM 7.0 p579
TCS 2.0 (FM 9.0 p250)

I recently installed TCS and now when I open existing .fm files in
either FM 9 or FM 7, I get missing fonts messages. I have made no
changes to my system's fonts, so I assume TCS has done so. So far, the
missing fonts are simply variant names of existing fonts, e.g., can't
find Lucida Bright Semi Bold, using Lucida Bright Demi Bold. Same
thing for the italic variants, etc.

I searched my hard drive for Lucida and find dozens of copies of these
font files in Program Files subfolders called \Adobe, \Java, and
\Hewlett-Packard. (But XP's Search and Void Software's Everything
search engine *don't* find the dozen or so entries that exist in
C:\Windows\Fonts.)

I've assumed I'm safe to use the usual method to get rid of the 'missing
fonts' messages, but I'd like to know what exactly happened here and
why. Anyone know?

Thanks,

Re: TCS install; missing fonts

2010-04-22 Thread David Spreadbury
Stuart,
I would wager that your maker.ini, of your previous install, was modified to
recognize these missing fonts. If you still have the old installation on your
system check the [WindowsToFrameFontAliases] section of the maker.ini file.
Copy the section and paste it into your current version. Oh ya, always make a
copy of your existing maker.ini before changing it.

Nope. My FM 7 maker.ini was last modified back in October 2009. After
distilling and printing one of my books, I find that it's not just a
name change from semi to demi bold -- the font itself is different from
what's in the previous printout of that book (and it's ugly).

Looks like I'll have to choose a new font, because it appears that the
TCS installation has overwritten my font files. Thanks, Adobe.

Hi Art,
I installed Setprint immediately after installing TCS 2, and always have
Adobe PDF as my default in FM. Your point about Unicode is valid; I
don't think my old Lucida was a Unicode font. Now that TCS has
obliterated it, I will have to choose a different font anyway, since the
'new' Lucida is badly kerned and ugly. Very rude of Adobe to trample my
system like that, though.

Thanks to you and David for your input.

Hi David,

On second reading, I realize I misunderstood; you were not suggesting
that TCS somehow modified my 7.0 maker.ini but that I (or some other
software) in the past had modified it. But it's still nope -- the
font name does not appear anywhere in the maker.ini file. I believe the
TCS installation process overwrote the existing Lucida font files
everywhere it could find them.

But it's still "nope" -- the
font name does not appear anywhere in the maker.ini file. I believe the
TCS installation process overwrote the existing Lucida font files
everywhere it could find them.

Thanks again,

Missing Fonts

Ths is perhaps an elementary question. I have to finish a project off-site. I

distill the book on this computer and send the file to the offset printer, will
the correct fonts be included int printed document? Or am I better off waiting

You should distill on your home computer.

You're confusing, or merging the actions of two different programs.
Frame will remember the missing fonts on any computer just fine, but
it substitutes for those fonts if they're missing.

But when you generate a PDF, you use Acrobat and embed the fonts that
are actually used in the document. As far as Acrobat is concerned, the
fonts it sees are the ones it users. So if you're on a system without
the correct fonts... it will use the fonts that Frame substituted. And
embed those.

FrameMaker's remember missing font names feature allows you to work on the
*content* of a document, but you can only properly finish and publish the
document on a system that has all the specified fonts installed on it. When you
are working in missing fonts mode, FrameMaker does not have access to the
font metrics (the glyph dimensions) for the proper font, so it can only use the
metrics for the substitution font, which will allways be slightly different.
And when you remember that a small difference in the font metrics can make any
given line break one word earlier or later, and that a line break change can
affect the length of the paragraph, and a change in the length of a paragraph
can affect where the page breaks, and changes in page breaks can add up to push
large objects like figures to different pages and even throw off what page the
following chapter starts on. The final pagination and generated file update and
the generation of the PS/PDF *must* be performed on a
system that has the proper fonts installed. If you make a PostScript file on
the missing fonts system, the PostScript and any PDF that is distilled from
it will only contain the substitution font and will not match a PDF of the book
that is created on the properly configured system.

Did you see my response from yesterday afternoon? Here is the relevant
portion again:

---
The main maker.ini is right where it's always been -- the FM
installation folder -- and that's the one you probably want to make font
mapping changes in. There's another one for your personal settings, but
it's mainly for things like window sizes and positions, recent files,
etc. UserProfile is a variable referring to a specific user's
profile data, the location of which depends on the Windows version.

This is all explained on page 1 of the Customizing manual under the
heading Locating customization files. There's a table there that shows
you where UserProfile is for each Windows version.

Are you saying that a search of your hard drive turns up _zero_
instances of maker.ini? I don't think that's possible with a functioning
FM install.

But I could be wrong. It happened once before. ;-)

I need to reset my fonts for a new computer; this is especially important for
bullets and some symbols. How can I configure Frame so that it uses the fonts
that it used on the old machine?

I'm using FM 7.1 on Windows XP Professional (Version 2002, Service Pack 3), and
I need to restore my font settings so that FM can use Helvetica for some
paragraph formats and ZapfDingbats for square bullets and other symbols.
Currently ZapfDingbats is replaced by Times New Roman, Helvetica by Arial, and
Times by Times Roman.

So far, I have downloaded the free Adobe Type Manager from the Abobe Website.
Both Helvetica, Times, and Zapf Dingbats appear in the ATM window in the
PSFONTS folder.

However, when I open a Frame document, I get the missing fonts message followed
by the Framemaker Console List with the list of unavailable fonts followed by
the fonts that replace them.

Furthermore, in the Family drop-down list, Default tab of the Paragraph
Designer dialog box, the missing fonts appear in grey.

Some years ago, when I was using FM 6 on Windows 2000, I seem to recall
changing the font settings in the maker.ini file; that recollection may be
unreliable.

I tried to follow the Customizing FrameMaker manual for locating the maker.ini
files and changing font profiles, but couldn't find the corresponding folders
on my machine (the manual indicates
UserProfile\ApplicationData\Adobe\FrameMaker\7.0).

Wrong verb. Not reset -- install. And note that connecting to a
PostScript printer gives you access to the standard PostScript fonts
when printing to that printer, but they're not installed on your PC and
can't be used in PDFs.

I'm using FM 7.1 on Windows XP Professional (Version 2002, Service

Sorry to hear that. IIRC, ATM Lite is not compatible with Win XP, only
ATM Deluxe (not free) is. It's been several years now, but I recall that
installing ATM Lite on XP caused problems, and that removing it required
a special utility from Adobe (Add/Remove Programs couldn't undo the
damage). You'll need to search the Adobe Knowledgebase for the details.

However, when I open a Frame document, I get the missing fonts message
followed by the Framemaker Console List with the list of unavailable
fonts
followed by the fonts that replace them.

Furthermore, in the Family drop-down list, Default tab of the
Paragraph
Designer dialog box, the missing fonts appear in grey.

Some years ago, when I was using FM 6 on Windows 2000, I seem to
recall
changing the font settings in the maker.ini file; that recollection
may be
 unreliable.

No, you remember right. In the [Fonts] section of the file, you can
change the default substitute for missing fonts as well as map specific
missing fonts to the replacements you want to use. It's not for the
faint of heart and may require some experimentation to get right. Then,
if you turn of Remember Missing Font Names, the substitutions will
become permanent.

Of course, this assumes that you really do want to permanently replace
the font. That might be true for replacing Times with Times New Roman,
but you can't just replace one symbol font, like Zapf Dingbats, with
another -- an f is an f, but in symbol fonts, the characters don't
correspond.

I tried to follow the Customizing FrameMaker manual for locating the
maker.ini files and changing font profiles, but couldn't find the
corresponding folders on my machine (the manual indicates
 UserProfile\ApplicationData\Adobe\FrameMaker\7.0).

The easiest way to fix things up would be to either network to your
old PC or pull the C drive from it and install it as an additional (a
slave, not the master) drive in your new machine.

Then perform whatever font installs you need to do to get all the
fonts from the old machine installed properly.

This would also be the easy way to snarf your old maker.ini file and
any other plug ins and odd bits that you may have forgotten.

You don't mention setting the Adobe PDF logical printer as your system
default, which is a good thing to do. It eliminates seeing references
to fonts that may be resident on a physical pritner but which aren't
actually installed on your system.

I agree almost all of Richard's post, except his antipathy to ATM
Lite. It works fine on XP systems, and it still my PS font manager of
choice, although both Adobe and Microsoft agree that it isn't
required. But it works for me, has worked for years, and continues to
work on multiple systems. It's especially useful to corral older PS
font files.

Wrong verb. Not "reset" -- "install." And note that connecting to a
PostScript printer gives you access to the standard PostScript fonts
when printing to that printer, but they're not installed on your PC and
can't be used in PDFs.

Richard, you did remember right that there was a bug caused by uninstalling
ATM Lite, and Adobe had a downloadable patch to repair Windows (or the PS
driver?) after doing so.

The missing fonts are listed in the Console window, along with the font

your Remember Missing Font Names setting).

You can add or change font substitutions in the maker.ini file, but it
may take some experimenting (back up maker.ini first!) to get the font

Once you have appropriate substitutions in place, you can turn off
Remember Missing Font Names. From then on, when you open and then save a

I apologize for my clear ignorance on the topic of fonts.

You're not the only ignorant one here. It sure would be nice if somebody
knowledgeable were to pen a comprehensive article on the subject of font
types and FM for Intercom. But I am certianly not knowledgeable in the
subject; like many of us, I stick with what I know and hope nothing goes

Re: why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

2008-08-18 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Charlie:

You may have noticed that FM has no Print Preview option. This is
because FM's on-screen view is (nearly) WYIWIG, and has been going
back many versions.

FM does this by looking at the font names listed in the
currently-selected printer's support file(s). You may have noticed
that FM displays a message - Document has changed. Font appearance may
be affected - when you change printers.

So, two simple causes of the missing font message are:

* Not having the fonts installed on the computer or on the hard drive
of the selected printer or in the printers permanent memory.

* Having the fonts in one of these places, but the currently-selected
printer doesn't recognize them.

One more-complex-but-simple cause is opening a file created on FM on a
Macintosh on a Windows computer. (Yes, there's a FM for Mac, but it's
version 7.0, and it only runs on Mac OS before OS X, or Mac's Classic
pre-OS X emulation.) There's nothing wrong with Mac FM files on a PC,
but there some apparently-identical font names differ in their
internal font names between platforms.

For details, look for Multiple_Platforms.pdf in the Documents
subdirectory of FM8's FrameMaker installation directory, or in the
OnlineManuals directory of pre-FM8 releases.

There's a free utility, SetPrint, that selects a specified printer as
the default printer when you launch FM, then restores the
previously-selected printer as default when you quit FM.

why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

2008-08-15 Thread Charlie Kyle
I am also a font simpleton (I hesitate to use the word ignoramus because
I certainly haven't "ignored" font issues. But "wayback" in the 90s I
realized that scaling fonts was a nastier job than scaling fish and the
font wars between Apple and the Softies and Adobe stunk.) I'm a pacifist
and a low intermediate FM 8.0 user and would also appreciate some
straight forward information on fonts and FM. Even some links to
relevant info would be very much appreciated. A couple weeks ago I
opened some FM docs for updating and received the "Missing fonts"
message. I looked in the online help and the FrameMaker 7 reference from
Scriptorium, but I couldn't find a quick way to determine the names of
the missing fonts. When FM produces the "missing fonts" message, does it
know what fonts are missing or does it just know it can't find them?

Thanks,
Charlie Kyle

Hi,

Would you be willing to clarify this for the font novice? From what I read
into your statement, it appears that Type 1 fonts (the old Adobe PS fonts) are
being translated in the background into Unicode. Is that accurate? Is there
anything special I need to do? Or, can I just go on to use Frame and the fonts
I have (a combination of PS and TrueType fonts) just the way I always have?

 Hello:

I know FM8 uses unicode, rather than PS fonts as before, but in an entire

not, now that we're all using the ATCS.

Further, many of the errors are for things like Helvetica, which is there

Is there a pointer to an explanation of why this is happening, and how to
fix the problem? Sorry if this is already covered, but I couldn't locate

More details, as requested by Dov, would be extremely helpful. In the
meantime: do all of your installations have the Adobe PDF printer
driver set as default, or do some of them have a physical printer set as
default? Physical printers' drivers often report their resident fonts
to the operating system, which then treats them as though they are
locally installed. That can cause font errors in FM.

RE: why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

2008-08-14 Thread Dov Isaacs
Nancy,

I absolutely did NOT say than any fonts are being translated either in the
background or otherwise. FrameMaker uses Type 1 fonts (please stop using the
term PostScript fonts - it means nothing since by definition, TrueType fonts
are every bit as much PostScript fonts as are Type 1 fonts) directly mapping
the glyphs in such fonts to Unicode. The same type of mapping occurs with
TrueType fonts and OpenType fonts.

You continue to use FrameMaker with Type 1 fonts the same way you did in the
past.

The only problem that I am aware of is where Type 1 fonts that had strange,
undocumented encodings are mapped into Unicode. This is also a problem with
every
other Adobe application as well. (Example, mapping the Hebrew alphabet into the
Latin A through Z in a font for ease of keying. That is impossible for any
Unicode-
based application to effectively deal with.)

not, now that we're all using the ATCS.

Further, many of the errors are for things like Helvetica, which is there
anyway!

Is there a pointer to an explanation of why this is happening, and how to
fix the problem? Sorry if this is already covered, but I couldn't locate
it in the framers archives.

RE: why am I having missing fonts in FM8, and how to correct?

FrameMaker 8 continues to support use of Type 1 fonts (I assume that is
what you mean by PS fonts) as well as TrueType and OpenType fonts. The
character set of the Type 1 fonts are mapped into Unicode.

You don't say what type of font errors you are getting (missing fonts?
mismapped characters? What?). If you provide some specific information
including the exact font names, source of such fonts, etc. and perhaps
a sample document, we could perhaps better analyze the problem you are
experiencing and offer some assistance.
