when the F! is this going to end?

all that is happening here is an exchange of stereotype opinions about
the matter. nothing new, nothing original, nothing is going to come
out of this, all this has been discussed already on numerous sites (
slashdot, digg, wherever ).

your opinion is useless to freebsd-questions. please go annoy your
relatives and friends.

furthermore, you are extremely short sighted. are you aware rice was
dumped in some African countries which ruined their local rice
farmers? ever heard of "learned helplessness"? ever considered that
not all children in 3rd world countries starve to death?

if anyone wants to ramble on, please do so on the chat list. or bugger
of to digg.

pardon my french,

usleep

PS: you should be ashamed of yourself regarding your statement about
the toilet paper.

AFAIK, divert in ipfw diverts to unix-domain sockets.

i think you might pull it off with ipnat +

/etc/ipnat.conf:
 rdr em0 0.0.0.0/0 port 80 -> 0.0.0.0/0 port 8082

although i am certainly not an expert regarding email issues nor NFS, but
could it be that the NFS server needs to support "lockd" and "statd" ?

i have this in my /etc/rc.conf:

rpc_lockd_enable="YES"
rpc_statd_enable="YES"

i don't think you are missing anything: i have a slighty older ports tree

i assume the port is "broken". ( i will take a look if i can identitfy the

I looked at CUDA lately and according to Nvidia the library stuff/driver you
need is not available for FreeBSD ( Linux, Windows ). I forgot about if it
is supported on Mac.

The talk/announcement on the Nvidia forum is about a native video driver for
amd64 i believe. A lot of people are waiting for this ( currently there is
only Nvidia support for i386 ). I don't think they are talking about
including CUDA support.

There is no OpenCL implementation for FreeBSD that i am aware of ( did look
).

as far as i know there have been Nvidia maintained/improved drivers for
FreeBSD for ages ( ls /usr/ports/x11 | grep -i nvid )

and for example:

%kldstat
Id Refs AddressSize Name
 18 0xc040 5ec918   kernel
 21 0xc09ed000 753c90   nvidia.ko
 31 0xc497c000 e000 fuse.ko
 41 0xc4b64000 2000 rtc.ko

The announcement may be about a unified driver, i don't know about that.

3. "nvidia". have X use the Nvidia supplied driver.

Works for me?

xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "true"
Option "TwinView" "True"
Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "31-80"
Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "56-76"
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "RightOf"
Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024, 1280x1024"
Option "DamageEvents" "True"
EndSection

Early this century I started removing packages by issuing "sudo rm -rf /".
Works like a charm. Have been doing it ever since. Also, it keeps the
package database ( /var/db/pkg ) and the optional port directories in sync.
Very nifty.

And there is no need for tedious use of "make deinstall" or "make clean" (
the horror! ).

Furthermore the method is true to the Unix-philosophy of KISS: all of this
package management sjizzle is pure futuristic bloatware that keeps you away
from what Unix truely stands for.

There is a "third" way too: recently it was brought to my attention that
Chuck Norris NEVER deletes packages: he just shoots them.

YMMV ofcourse,

i seem to remember softlinking /usr/share/fonts as well.

no other issues though.

you might want to look at this as well: my guess is that for the
fade-issue, you will need ImageMagick.

that will probably solve your problems.

you have had plenty of response already. i just want to post my experience.

in late 2001, i installed 4.3 on a server and a couple of
workstations. i have upgraded them as time went by up to 4.11. no
problems, it runs runs runs.

i have been following the mailing-lists on a regular basis, and
decided 5.x was not me ( sorry guys ).

at the beginning of this year i upgraded my main workstation to 6.0
for the following reasons:
  - could not get the latest KDE to compile due to my own messing with
the packages
  - i needed kernel threading for mythtv ( can be done with
linuxthreads on 4.11 )

so far, 6.0 has been flawless for me. only thing i noticed was: gcc3.3
seems to be a lot slower than 2.95 ( i have no figures, could be my
imagination )

if your machine will be for play as you suggest, go for the latest &
greatest. if it fails, you could always try 4.11 later on.

Re: Why are so many people using 4.x?

2006-03-29 Thread usleepless
Dear Wee-Sern,

when i upgraded my 4.11 workstation, i did a clean install from CD to a new HD.

when i will be upgrading my 4.11 server to 6.x, i will probably run a
6.x alongside the 4.11, installing all software as needed, test it,
then transfer data from 4.11 disk to the 6.x.

then test again, and swap the 6.x harddisk into the server. i will
probably keep the 4.11 harddisk as a backup.

i would not upgrade to 6.x if i were you, if there is no specific
reason. i would keep my 4.x updated though ( so i suggest you update
to 4.11, just for security ).

you mean me? not we. right?

look, i had it running by patching the wrong wc-par. then i created
some slideshows of my holiday pictures, burnt it to a DVD and sent it
off to my 5-year-old-the-cutest-ever-cousin. there is no "most of the
things". there is 1.

when i fixed the wc-par, i sent an email to the port maintainer about the fix.

now you want me to upgrade to a version which is apperently worse than
mine ( i have no probs creating slideshow, i needed to add a symlink
cause i tested your scenario ).

i welcome your good intentions. we might send the port-maintainer an
email stating that using 1.7.2_1 + wc-par fix + seq to job symlink
works better than _3.

altough i was already tired of this, you tempted my curiousity and i
downloaded 1.7.5 of sourceforge, patched the wc --chars and ran it
with the parameters as you specified.

it created a Test.vob without crossfades. i just read the code, and i
suspect it is still seq not doing what it is supposed to do.

seq2 is not parameter compatible with seq.

so, i have to finish what i started:

write to /usr/bin/seq, chmod +x etc

#!/bin/csh
if ( $#argv == 2) then
if( $1 == $2) then
  echo $1
else
  seq2 -s $1 -e $2
endif
else
if($2 == $3) then
echo $2
else
seq2 -s $2 -e $3
endif
endif

i tested with a smaller script than this ( lots of errors ) but the
slideshow finished WITH crossfades. i am now do a rerun to see if it
still generates a decent slideshow.

Shell ( csh, sh ) scripting and seq-command

2006-03-29 Thread usleepless
Dear List,

i have prototyped a subset of the linux seq command in php ( ouch, yes. ). why?

i don't know how to do it in any shell-script. i have been reading
man-pages, searching google, but years later, i still can't do a thing
in them. maybe it is my blindspot. here it goes ( without the tags etc
):

#!/usr/local/bin/php

i would appreciate any implementations in csh, sh or bash or whatever.
maybe i will learn.

csh or sh would be the most interesting though. this code is trivial
to implement in C, that is not my problem.

yes, and to convert steps to reps you will need $reps = ($end -
$start) / $steps, and then see the difference between your script and
the output of an actual linux seq.

for example:
   seq 1 2 60 gives 1..3..5..7..59 ( see also my php and csh implementations )

a seq equivalent ( 3 par version ) would be:

@ reps = ( $3 - $1 ) / $2
jot $reps $1 $3

which will give 1..3..5..7..9..12(!)....60

so how would your implementation of seq by using jot look like?

Dan, Bill,

thank you, my bad for not reading the manpage thoroughly enough.

i was put off by reps being the first parameter, and interpreted [s] (
stepsize ) as being the separator string, and assumed there was no
stepsize.

sorry for the fuzz, but at least i upped my shellscripting abilities :-)

Miguel,

i looked at your top-screenshot, i have the impression you could
dedicate far more memory to postgresql. maybe it would be usefull to
post your postgresql.conf ( this is in fact a postgresql question, but
i don't care ).

you might want to turn fsync off, my limited knowledge about this
switch tells me it is only important in case of powerfailures.

you want to give postgresql as much memory as it needs, cause else it
will underperform heavily. this might be one of the reasons it is not
catching on as quick as i would like. postgresql is the best in OSS
though.

bring on your .conf!

i know a bit of databases, and assume you do as well, so i am hesative
to question your explanation but:

the importing of a DB-file ( being tab-sep-copies or SQL dumps ) is a
transformation process and does not require all data to be in core (
is that the right terminology? ) at the same moment. it transform x
Gigs of input to y Gigs of output. i don't see why the 2GB machine
would suffer this hard.

unless the 3GB-file is one big table. is it MIguel? then it might be a
postgresql hitch.

i will have to wait on the .conf files, Miguel has not claimed them to
be identical, so i am curious.

ok, but gentoo performs the same task ok, so it is not a postgresql problem.
you have not confirmed wether the gentoo-box is running with the same
postgresql.conf. is it? if not, which are the differences?

> attached is my config file, shared_buffers are 25% of total RAM

i my experience, you should go much higher. if the server is not in production
yet, you might go as high as 75% ( assuming no other processes need these kind
of resources ). i am not familiar with the work_mem flag, it was not there
last time i tuned a postgresql. you might consider upping your wal-buffers, but
i am not sure if they are used by copyin.

ofcourse it might be hardware related: have you checked your diskperformance?
what is your throughput? how does this throughput compare with the gentoo box?

that is not true. that is not "probable", at least, it never happened
to me. and i encountered some panics over the last months ( i have
been patching multimedia/pvr250 to support 500s ).

in fact, PostgreSQL never corrupted on me in 5 years ( i used to use
to mysql, which seemed to corrupt by looking at it ). however, i am
not in the large number of transactions-business. there is a sustained
number of updates though, at least once every 2 minutes.

my suggestion to turn fsync of was geared towards this particular

it is a good thing you are pointing out potential problems.

it used to be a problem, but since your gentoo box is doing the same
task in 4-5 minutes, i doubt it is currently the problem.

i seem to recall some speedup of the copyin-command in one of the
latest releases of PostgreSQL. i don't know the details, maybe they
are deferring index-updates automagically when copying-in ( check
PostgreSQL release notes ).

Miguel, you have not yet confirmed the two
postgresql.conf-files(gentoo vs fbsd) to be identical ( or i missed
that ). please let me know.

another issue pops to my mind: on 4.x i had to tweak some sysctl's
regarding shared-memory ( default settings would not allow PGSQL to
claim as much as i would like ). i don't know if this still needs to
be done on 6.x. if i recall correctly, postgresql would not start if
it could not allocate it's shared buffers. things may have changed:
check you postgresql.log to see if it is complaining.

please let us know if you achieved any speed update at all.

Re: terrible performance in 6.1beta4

Beto,

i believe he has given up.

i would say that on a dedicated database machine 50-75%
dedicated(shared) memory is not overkill.

wasn't there some other switch which determined wether to page
shared-memory out?

Re: terrible performance in 6.1beta4

2006-04-03 Thread usleepless
i just thought of another possible cause:

what is the location of the to-be-imported file? local disk?

because if it is on the network, check your NIC if you are running at
the maximum rate, nfs buffers, etc ( i was fooled by such a situation
once ).

Re: C Program to execute programs in same console

2006-04-04 Thread usleepless
Jon,

i believe you are mixing up some concepts.

1. if i read your title "C Program to execute programs in same
console". i think this is easy, just use system("ls *.txt") and you
are done. i believe you can choose wat to do with the output, i am not
sure.

2. but you come up with the cd-command, which you want to change the
context of your parent shell. changing the home-dir of the current
process ( your program ) can be done with chdir. altering the context
of your parent-shell-process can not be done, except for setting
environment variables ( through the proper C calls )

but if you are running your program, your "shell" (interpreter) is
temporarily not there: your program is running the show. every
system,execvp or whatever call will give you a child-process with a
new shell, not the parent-shell-process. i believe you may set
environment variables in your parent shell with the appropiate library
calls, but not through a system/execvp call.

so, maybe you should define what you really want to achieve. for
example, qdvd-author runs alls kinds of external programs to generate
thumbnails and slideshows for example.

anybody please correct me if i am wrong.

no, you should contact the list which comes closest to the problem: if
there is a problem with hylafax, check the hylafax
website/mailinglists.

if you suspect there is a problem with the combination of freebsd and
hylafax, you want to check the freebsd-mailinglists.

just like any other program you might use.

hylafax is a very mature package, has been running on freebsd for a
long time and has a nice configuration script. hardware may prove to
be more of a problem than software.

before configuring, read the README or other docs provided. check the
hylafax website too.

i am not in any way affiliated with hylafax nor hylafax+freebsd. i am
just another user ( 1 modem ).

Google Earth on Wine on FBSD6.0

2006-04-09 Thread usleepless
Hello All,

i just want to share my experiences with Google Earth, and i am
curious about other solutions to get it working properly.

i compiled wine from the ports tree:

$ pkg_info | grep wine
wine-0.9.7,1Microsoft Windows compatibility layer for Unix-like systems

i installed Google Earth on an u machine, and hooked the harddrive
onto my FBSD6.0 machine ( looking back, this could have been done with
winzip or any archiver ).

i experimented a little, read the winehq db info. what i found was, it
can work, but your .wine dir has to be very very fresh. i could not
directly find out why this is. anybody?

so it ended up with this:

#!/usr/local/bin/bash

rm -rf .wine
wine
cp Arial.TTF .wine/drive_c/windows/fonts
cd ".wine/drive_c/Program Files" ; tar xzf ~/ge.tgz
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="usp10,msvcrt=n" wine "c:\Program Files\Google\Google
Earth\GoogleEarth.exe"

this script assumes:

-Arial.TTF in your home dir
-ge.tgz in your home dir ( containing "Google/Google Earth/*" )
-you have editted the default_lt.kvw as suggested on winehq

changes i am not sure about: my tgz might contains a downloaded copy
of msvcrt.dll. i don't think it matters.

the result is pretty impressive: text is not spaced properly, but for
the rest it works! ( with some quirks )

i am eager to hear about other (cleaner ) solutions.

i also tested winword.exe from the other HD btw: worked out of the
box. the other office apps did not however. anyway, it was a while
since i tried to use wine, and the progress they made impressed me.

Re: DVD-Slideshow

2006-04-11 Thread usleepless
Chris,

congratulations on you wedding, i hope the best for the two of you.

read back the thread yourself: you will need the dvd-slideshow from ports +
 - patch for the wc --lines ( or wc --chars, i can't remember ). these
are 1 of 2 instances in the script.
 - back in this thread i have given multiple solutions for a
replacement "seq". this is the key to proper fading.

maybe it is easier afterall to run the script in linux-compat mode:
you will need no patches at all. i for one do not know how to
accomplish this easy however ( never had the need ). oh (w/h)ell,
you'll just need to start it from a linux-shell i assume.

good luck, and please try to notify the portmaintainer about the
problem and solution. i am off on a mini-break myself, so you are on
your own now.

Removing Giant from a driver

2006-10-14 Thread usleepless

Hi All,

i have been tweaking the pvr250 driver to support pvr150s/500s. now i
want to remove Giant from the code.

problem is, i am not sure what to do. i have created a mutex which
replaces the spltty and splx calls. but this crashes my box :-)

the original code looks like this:
   /*
* Allocate a DMA tag for the scatter / gather list.
*/
   error = bus_dma_tag_create(sc->parent_dmat, 1, 0,
  BUS_SPACE_MAXADDR_32BIT,
  BUS_SPACE_MAXADDR, NULL, NULL,
  CXM_SG_BUFFERS
  * sizeof(struct cxm_sg_entry), 1,
  BUS_SPACE_MAXSIZE_32BIT, 0,
#if __FreeBSD_version >= 501102
  busdma_lock_mutex, &Giant,
#endif
  &sc->enc_sg.dmat);

what should it look like?

and how will i prevent the interrupt routine from interfering with
userland operations? can i place a "mtx_lock()" call in the interrupt
routine?

is there a howto somewhere?

like the disk currently in use to be a member of the array and I don't have
anywhere to conveniently back up the data already there. I'd like to create
a degraded graid3 array with the two new components, copy the data from the

If that's not a possibility, can anyone suggest a way to get the same end

while i know close to nothing about raid, here is what i think:

1. you have no backup ( otherwise you could pull it off )
2. you are trying to achieve your goal through a tricky method ( me
thinks anyways :-)

is the loss of your data worth less than the cost of an extra hd? if
so, buy another hd. if not, make a clean install?

and assuming a 3 hd raid setup, would it not be wise to have a spare hd anyway?

what's the point?

Do what it says. The port can't be fetched automatically, probably due
to licensing issues. A few lines above the lines you pasted should be
a link to the location of the file, or at least an URL to the main
website. Follow it, download adstudio-4.5.2_1 and copy/move it to
/usr/ports/distfiles.
The last step has to be done as root

while this is true, Frank alias Andreas tries to build mysql, but has
issued "make" in /usr/ports/databases instead of issueing "make" in

mmap on freebsd vs linux

2007-04-18 Thread usleepless

Hi All,

i am looking into implementing a piece of the V4L interface. this
involves mmap'ing from userspace into kernelspace.

in mplayer, this is what is called:

tvi_v4l2.c:
"
priv->map[i].addr = mmap (0, priv->map[i].buf.length, PROT_READ |
 PROT_WRITE, MAP_SHARED,
priv->video_fd,priv->map[i].buf.m.offset);
"

the file descriptor parameter is the file descriptor of the opened
capture device. the offset parameter should be filled in by the opened
device.

does mmap work on freebsd as it works on linux? ie: can i mmap any
device? are there constraints on the device which should be met?

structure alignment problems

2007-01-28 Thread usleepless

Hi,

i am working on getting mythtv-0.20 talking to the pvrxxx driver.

the problem appears when i want to do:
 v4l2_capabilities vcap;
 ioctl(videofd, VIDIOC_QUERYCAP, &vcap);

the driver and mythtv have the struct differently aligned, and i get
an "inappropiate ioctl for device". this is what the struct + IOR look
like:

struct v4l2_capability
{
   __u8driver[16]; /* i.e. "bttv" */
   __u8card[32];   /* i.e. "Hauppauge WinTV" */
   __u8bus_info[32];   /* "PCI:" + pci_name(pci_dev) */
   __u32   version;/* should use KERNEL_VERSION() */
   __u32   capabilities;   /* Device capabilities */
   __u32   reserved[4];
};
#define VIDIOC_QUERYCAP _IOR  ('V',  0, struct v4l2_capability)

the driver is compiled like this:

cc -O -pipe -Werror -D_KERNEL -DKLD_MODULE -nostdinc -I-  -I../../..
-I. -I@ -I@/contrib/altq -I@/../include -finline-limit=8000
-fno-common  -fno-omit-frame-pointer -mcmodel=kernel -mno-red-zone
-mfpmath=387 -mno-sse -mno-sse2 -mno-mmx -mno-3dnow  -msoft-float
-fno-asynchronous-unwind-tables -ffreestanding -Wall -Wredundant-decls
-Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes  -Wmissing-prototypes
-Wpointer-arith -Winline -Wcast-qual  -fformat-extensions -std=c99 -c
/usr/ports/multimedia/pvrxxx/work/modules/cxm/cxm/../../../dev/cxm/cxm.c

it yields a struct-size of 104 bytes.

mythtv is compiled like this:

g++ -c -pipe -I/usr/local/include/artsc -D_REENTRANT
-I/usr/local/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/local/lib/glib-2.0/include -g
-Wall -W -O2 -pthread -Wall -Wno-switch -fomit-frame-pointer

-DUSING_FREEBOX -DUSING_HDHOMERUN -DUSING_IVTV -DUSING_BACKEND
-DQT_NO_DEBUG -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -DQT_SHARED -DQT_TABLET_SUPPORT
-I/usr/local/share/qt/mkspecs/freebsd-g++ -I.
-I../../../../../../../local/include
-I../../../../../../../X11R6/include -I../.. -I.. -I../libmyth
-I../libavcodec -I../libavutil -I../libmythmpeg2 -Idvbdev -Impeg
-I../libmythlivemedia/BasicUsageEnvironment/include
-I../libmythlivemedia/groupsock/include
-I../libmythlivemedia/liveMedia/include
-I../libmythlivemedia/UsageEnvironment/include
-I../../../../../../../local/include -I/usr/X11R6/include -o
cardutil.o cardutil.cpp

and it yields a struct-size of 128.

is it the -std=c99? is it because this is on amd64?

any help is greatly appreciated!

sendmail setup

2007-02-06 Thread usleepless

List, Guys and Girls,

although i know this is not a specific freebsd issue, i will ask the
question nevertheless.

normally, i sent my outgoing email through my isp ( relay.x.z ). this
server seems to be down at the moment.

so after working with bsd for years, i decided to dive into sendmail.
i read a lot, setup the stuff and tested sh*t.

so basically, it seems to work fine: i can send messages between
machines on the LAN, but messages to the outside(gmail, other domains)
timeout.

i ran tcpdump on the external interface, and the only thing that seems
to happen is my machine contacting the other machines, but they never
reply!:

22:24:25.763774 x.y.z.4091 > gsmtp183.google.com.smtp: S
1796563309:1796563309(0) win 57344  (DF)

how come? how do i find out? i checked /var/log/security and stuff is
not being blocked by ipfw.

sendmail reports:
stat=Deferred: Operation timed out with gsmtp163.google.com.

i have masqueraded(sendmail) with my isp-assigned-domain-name (
ipXXzYYY.provider.country ), and with another domain i own.

am i missing something obvious?

thanks in advance for any help,

It's highly possible your ISP is blocking port 25 to everything but
their mailservers in an effort to keep their customers from running
open relays and other nasty spam software.

thanks a bunch. it got me thinking.

1. i have an adsl-account with ip-connectivity only ( no mail, no
news, no mailserver, no nothing )
2. i used to send my email using a relay-server coming with a hosted
domain i administer ( hosted by an isp abroad ).

so that was not working anymore. so i tried sendmail, which did not work either.

so i pinged "smtp.myisp-withnoservices.country" ( which previously
never existed ).

bingo! now it exists.

so they decided to block port 25, and add this relay-server.

thanks!

Danke.

that seems to be German, in Dutch "Bedankt" would be appropiate. i
appreciate the effort though.

I found the english wkik entry so I could understand the
piece. Since Sloot is dead, no way of knowing.

actually there is. the Dutch wiki-article has much more detail about the case.

this Sloot guy claimed he could compress any movie into 1kb ( 1024
bytes ). he stored this 1kb movies on smartcards, which he would feed
into his magic machine to show the movies.

in The Netherlands there was press-coverage about this, and he was
able to attract investors and even a ( up to then ) reputable IT-guru
assiocated with Philips to back him. they found silicon-valley
investors who were interested.

he died / killed himself / was murdered before his hoax could be uncovered.

sounds a lot like the perpetuum mobile stories.

But this is the
kind of leap forward that would save, oh, a few measley
$Billions. And give millions of us faster and broader access.

good luck!

hmmm, freebsd.org seems to be broken for me

- man devfs.rules

- create /etc/devfs.rules: ( substitute wheel for the group you want )

[localrules=10]
add path 'da*s*' mode 0660 group wheel

- append to /etc/rc.conf:

devfs_system_ruleset="localrules"

- make sure the dir you are mounting on is owned by the user who
issues the mount command.

- make sure vfs.usermount=1

- reboot after changing devfs.rules & rc.conf

worked for me, let us know if it worked for you.

I experienced similar behaviour recently when i had built kernel+userland
with "-fomit-frame-pointer".

I ended up doing a "repair" from an install CD, and rebuilding kernel+world
without "-fomit-frame-pointer" afterwards.

Your "init" is probably broken.
