It should work. Do you have any basic DOS diagnostics like MSD or
Quarterdeck's MFT? It might be worth checking that the add-in card is
on LPT1: - it is possible it's on LPT2: or LPT3: instead.

its a plain install of freedos + the proprietary database the system is running
no diags available except ultimate boot cd, tuff pro on cd

so 3rd party card should be visible in bios??

You don't mention installing a DOS driver for the addon card (usually in
autoexec.bat).

Most modern PCI cards need a driver, it should be on the CD if it came
with one.

i didnt do it - its years since i had anything to do with dos - didnt
realise a driver was req for addon cards
there is a cd and according to the docs with the card - a dos driver

Note I DON'T want to load Windows 98, just the MS-DOS 6.22 equivilants.

Has anyone else done this and documented how to do it?
Since Win95 came out I have had a minimum of one version of Win9X and
one real DOS, and sometimes multiple versions or configurations of both,
all on C:, and one or more versions of OS/2 on extended, and maybe a
Linux thrown in. I just pick them off a single menu.

Mostly I use System Commander. I also use OS Selector by Acronis. For
very simple DOS/W9X, DRDOS has a loader that provides a two line menu
for DOS and Win.

Thank you all. Below is a first cut to beat up on.
The box I am using for this has two floppies, a ZIP100, DVDROM\CDROM,

On the HDD that is plugged in for this exercise, C: drive currently

[Freedos-user] FDOS boot

2006-01-05 Thread Ray Davison
Can someone give me some help with the boot files? I have been using
DRDOS since V 6, but FDOS is new to me. The machine is an AMD 2200,
single HDD, 100M Zip, CD-RW, CD-DVD-RW. DRDOS is also on C:. W98SE
will be. OS selection is done by Acronis OS Selector. I have a
similar setup - with an older version of FDOS - on another machine.

I have a fresh installation of the version below. The current
config.sys and autoexec.bat files are below that. They are basically
as-installed except for adding a couple utilities and attempting to
use some drivers from http://johnson.tmfc.net/freedos/frame.html

The usage for those drivers was clipped from the readmes, without much
real understanding on my part. In their current form:

Boot option 2 - EMX386 - stops while trying to load XDMA.

ATAPICDD loads the CD but not the DVD. XCDROM - if it's line is
selected - loads nothing.

 PartitionMagic:

 Partition Commander:

PartitionMagic used to be a leader in this field but it's dominance has been
challenged lately by competitors. Partition Commander, for instance, allows
converting NTFS partitions back to FAT, the feature that was absent in
PartitionMagic. Acronis Disk Director Suite seems to have the best choice of
features of all three products, but I have never tried it so can't comment on
 it.

I have been collecting partition tools since about 1990. I have several
versions of Partition Magic and recent versions of the other two above.
My weapon of choice is Partition Magic. It works fine on the current
XP. On my laptop I used it to shrink the default full drive, single
partition down to 10G and add several other types. It is also my backup
system. I copy the boot partitions to another HDD.

Gerry Hickman wrote:

OK, let's agree it's just a shell for a minute; why would anyone want to
 start it from within FreeDOS?

First, do you actually except that you cannot boot any Win 3x, including
3.11. You have to boot something else first and then run Win 3x as an
app. People who were serious about Win 3x put a line at the end of
autoexec.bat to run Windows (Win). For Win 9x MS essentially did that
for us. People have pulled the shell off of Win 9x. And, as I recall,
they ran it on DRDOS. Don't quote me on that, it was a long time ago.

I ran Win 3.0 and later 3.11 for WG. I skipped MSDOS 4 and bought MSDOS
5 when it came out. Three months later DRDOS 6 came out with
interactive configuration files, I bought that and it has been the only
DOS I have used until recently when I have tried FreeDOS. So, I have
never run W3x on anything but DRDOS. I assume it would run on FR. I
stopped using W3x when I got OS/2, which has W3x support.

In my view, it's a total mismatch. FreeDOS
 doesn't pretend to be a prot-mode o/s

DRDOS has DPMI. I assume FD could if it doesn't.

For what this is worth, I am able to get FreeDOS with the Q stuff to run
on newer MBs - AMD 64 -that fail with DRDOS. They don't like EMM386; DR
or FD. I have tried some hybrids - DR plus Q - with limited success.

and anyway it runs much better in
real mode at the moment. If it's going to a 32/64 bit prot-mode o/s then
really it's time to forget the whole legacy thing and just create a
next generation 64bit command line o/s that supports endless memory,
multi-processors, multi-tasking, firmware BIOS, native SCSI, NTFS, NFS,
 KERBEROS and SMB signing.

64 bit is a bit of a jump, but if you will settle for 32 bit - for now -
I think we did most of that, it's called OS/2, now marketed as
eCommStation. You have your choice of Cmd line or GUI interface.

Is there a way to do an incremental install, that is, jump to a

Someone else complained about this last November. I don't find a response.

How can I determine what did not get installed because of this?

Is there a way to do an incremental install, that is, jump to a
particular install page?

The HDD does boot in that machine.

[Freedos-user] OS selectors

2007-08-19 Thread Ray Davison
Is anyone current on what is available for operating system selection?

For years I used VCom System Commander, up to SC 2000. When that had
trouble with OS/2 on some hardware I went to Acronis OS selector V5. I
now have 8, 9 and 10. They do not seem to understand booting a
partition that is above 1024.

The OS I need\want are DOS, Win and OS/2.  My setup for years has been;
FAT16 C: as the only primary, holding DOS and W9X, and the rest
extended. When things were changing C: had multiple versions of each.
It now has FreeDOS and W98SE.

The rest of the HDD is a single extended. For Win I have moved to W2K.
I keep W98SE as a maintenance installation, mostly to fix FAT32
partitions. I use FAT32 partitions to share apps and data between the
three OSs.

I have OS/2 Warp4 on a FAT16. My challenge is that the current version
of OS/2; eCommStation (eCS) wants to use HPFS, which neither DOS nor Win
can access and DOS cannot even see. The only way I have found to have
DOS and the other OSs see the same drive letters is to put all HPFS
after all FAT, and that puts eCS above 1024.

And that leaves me needing an OS selector that understands
1024\interrupt 13.

Or, someone could add HPFS support to the FreeDOS kernel.

[Freedos-user] Partition layout

2007-08-30 Thread Ray Davison
I have always had a single primary C for DOS and W9X, and everything
else extended. W2K then puts it's boot files on C. That can cause
problems trying to restore the W2K partition from backup.

So I created the drive below. I am sure it will wrap. Sorry.

The labels include the drive letters, if they boot to their physical
position. And that is the challenge. Booting FreeDOS 1.0, the W2K-D
primary picks up the letter after any extended partitions. With DRDOS
7.01 Fat32, they hold their physical position.

Ideas?

A search for DLASORT*.* failed to find anything on the CD or HDD. I

This option is for specifying whether Drive Letter

all primary partitions across drives and then
extended partitions, or the more logical
all partitions (primary extended) on the 1st

0 corresponds to MS way and 1 corresponds to first

Do you understand, C is stable. On this drive D and E get swapped. If
I plug in the second HDD - which is a single extended - D is after that.
So, I have first primary; C, then all extended, then second primary; D
- ignoring the primaries that are Boot Manager and the extended shells.
And Boot Manager is inert, C is active.

This is exactly what DLASORT is about - MS DOS style is the
default, which does all primary partitions first, but you
can also use the other setting, which is all partitions on
 the first HDD first :-)

But it is NOT putting all primaries first. It is putting the second
after all extendeds.

Re: [Freedos-user] dual boot part 5.

2008-11-03 Thread Ray Davison
If you want to boot multiple OSs you should get real boot manager. For
years I ran System Commander. A couple years ago that started having
problems with OS/2 on some mother boards. Since then I have been using
Acronis OS Selector. It will run as many versions of DOS and W9X on a
single C primary as you have space for. During a transition period I
had DRDOS, FREEDOS, MSDOS and two versions of W9X. I did a similar
thing with System Commander. I also have Acronis Disk Director which
has a boot manager as well as a partitioning tool. It will also run
multiple versions of Win32 from a single extended. I have never needed
more than one real primary. None of these things cost much and they put
you in control.

DRDOS has a boot selector that will select it or one version of W9X. I
am surprised if FREEDOS doesn't have such a thing.

it says DOS, takes me off into WinLand. This one looked hopeful, it
mentioned FreeDOS, but is dead.

I assume you try using SHSUCDX for SATA CD or DVD
drives? No problem for SHSUCDX (which creates a
drive letter from the raw data) but your low level
driver (to access raw data) must support SATA. One
 typical example would be GCDROM:

 www.freedos.org/cgi-bin/lsm.cgi?mode=lsmlsm=base/gcdrom.lsm

 The UDMA-speed SATA/IDE harddisk/cdrom driver UIDE
will probably support SATA CD/DVD as well. Note that
you do not normally need harddisk drivers in DOS, it
only helps with speed in cases where the BIOS does
not make good use of UDMA speeds.

QCDROM picked up only the SATA, and only if it was loaded first. And I
still needed XCDROM for the PATA. And I never got SHSUCDX to pick them up.

UIDE seems to work. It loads 7104, all upper. And both drives read.

You may have overlooked one dependency, not of the functional type you

My browser of choice is Mozilla's Seamonkey suite running under
eComStation (OS/2). It shares a profile and all the data files with the
Win version so when I need to boot Win I have all the same bookmarks,
history, mail etc. I am not comfortable allowing Win to connect to the
WEB, but I am increasingly having to boot Win because the OS/2 Flash is
still version 5. Adobe has apparently recently allowed the current
version to be ported but time and money to do that is scarce. So while
I would like to see a real browser under DOS, if it doesn't include the
current Flash it would be crippled, and maybe not worth the bother.

stick with what I have. I have had a UPS driver with a COD, and I have
booted DOS and printed a check, and the driver did not feel I
unnecessarily delayed him. Try that with a GUI. I also have a material
requirements planning program that can still keep up. I actually think
chasing numbers and letters around the screen with a mouse is not very
efficient. I also have a printed circuit layout program.

And I have to work real hard to crash DOS.

I have been running Dos, Win and OS/2 together since W95. At first I

W2K was too big for that so I put it on a logical after whatever
versions of OS/2 I had. Even tho modern OS/2 may not need to be under
1024 I still keep them up front. Typically, W4 and eCS each at 800M.
And DOS is now the only OS on C:, the only primary. All my desktops
have either W2K or WXP on a logical. My laptop has both. And none of
my desktops have any LVM. All my HDDs are front panel plug-in and LVM
makes it difficult to swap drives; they have to be mounted.

With that as a starting point can I put Linux on a logical(s)?

I have a couple suggestions for your consideration.

First, anyone who is doing anything serious with a PC needs this:
http://www.dfsee.com/
It works on DOS, OS/2, Win and Linux, and the CD boots FreeDOS.

The most powerful thing it does is fix confused HDDs; like lost
partition tables. And the author will help.

It also does a bit-for-bit, drive-to-drive copy. This is a pic of my
backup and storage box.
https://picasaweb.google.com/110720715566253280768/ScreenShots#5620366853489847778

It is connected to a LAN, but it is also the ultimate sneaker net. All
my HDDs, on every machine, are front panel plugin.  Backup consists of;
plug in the HDD you want to copy, plug in a blank HDD at least as large
as what you want to copy, boot - the racks are hot swappable, the OSs
are not - , run DFSee, select the partition(s) or drive to be copied,
and go to lunch.

Restore just reverses the process.

There has been much discussion regarding which DOS might do what on
which machine. Actually determining which will actually work typically
involves installing, trying, clean and install the next, repeat.

But what is not apparently well known, is that you can install as many
versions of DOS and W9X on a single C: as the partition will hold. That
way you can easily bounce back and forth between versions. During a
transition period I once had three DOS and two W9X. I have also had two
W2K on a single logical partition. I am not sure about WXP.

But you need a serious boot utility. At least one of the DOSs would
install itself alongside one other already there. But for more than
that I have used System Commander and Acronis.

What is available for reading NTFS used in WXP, W7?

Let me explain the actual task. I have FreeDOS and two each Win and
OS/2. Two each because they both change and I don't get rid of one OS
or app until I believe the new is ready to replace the old. I also
maintain two copies of the GUI OSs for redundancy and maintenance.

So the first HDD has five boot partitions. The first two partitions on
the second HDD are apps and data. I have apps with data that I share
between OS/2 and Win, and DOS apps with data that I run under all three
OSs. Run objects point to apps and apps point to data.

That means all OSs must at least see the same drive letters for the app
and data partitions. Win lets me play with drive letters and I do.
OS/2 has the option, but for me there is a trade off and I don't use the
option, but don't really need it. I do have OS/2 and Win with NTFS and
HPFS drivers to see each other.

That leaves DOS. It is not so much that I need DOS to work with NTFS or
HPFS, I just need to get drive letters assigned prior to the apps and
data partitions.

As for the DVDs. In OS/2 and Win I have them as XY. If there is a way
to get FreeDOS to assign the same letters I would appreciate a cookbook.

I have a NTFS4DOS.EXE dated 8June2004 size 93.819 but have not had time
to try it.

Re: [Freedos-user] Would you use a native 32/64-bit FreeDOS/BIOS system?

2018-01-18 Thread Ray Davison

A small side trip about real work in real DOS.

Since Win2K, my desktops have had a 2G, FAT16 primary at the front of
the first HDD, carrying DOS and a boot manager, and two Win partitions,
both logicals. Every other partition is a logical. Using that layout I
am now running FreeDOS 1.1 and Win7-64 - and yes Win7-64 are on logicals.

My DOS accounting program was abandoned by it's creator in 1995 and I am
still using it. I have looked at many other accounting programs since
then and have been unimpressed by most and appalled by some. A big
thing I like about doing accounting under DOS is that I am not doing
accounting in a window, my PC becomes an accounting machine. It takes
the entire screen, the text is big and bold, and it is fast. And three
years of data files fit on a floppy.

And I am still using WordPerfect 6.2B for DOS. Similar to accounting,
my PC becomes a word processor. I have kept rather current versions of
MS Office, but use them mostly to work other peoples files.

A couple decades ago, Bill Macrone of PC Magazine said if you want to
multi task use multiple machines. If I want to access a bank on-line
while doing accounting I have a Win laptop sitting at my elbow.

So I am just hopping to keep the current stuff running.

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS screen refresh in a VM

2018-11-01 Thread Ray Lopez
I've got an unusual issue that I've been trying to solve for several
days but have had no luck.

Running FreeDOS in a QEMU-based VM, on a Xen hypervisor (it's actually
the Qubes OS)

I managed to get it all installed and it runs well except for one
problem:  Screen refresh is too slow, even with simple graphical
interfaces like Tandy Deskmate.

After much research I am guessing that the VM is emulating some type of
hardware that FreeDOS is not optimized for.  And the system I am running
the VM on does NOT allow me to change the hardware emulation easily.

The frustrating thing is that I faced this exact same problem when I
tried running Tandy Deskmate in a Linux VM under DOSBox. And then when I
was poking around, the problem cleared up and screen refreshes were
super fast!  But for the life of me I have not been able to replicate
this success on FreeDOS.

I'd be open to any suggestions as I think I've tried every possible
setting.  Thank you!

[Freedos-user] BM cannot boot FD 1.2

2022-01-09 Thread Ray Davison
I am maintaining several machines that do serious work on FD. For
several years they have all had FD 1.1. I just installed 1.2, basic,
over 1.1 on one machine. FD seemed to install OK, and took over booting
the partition as expected. FD 1.2 seemed to load OK. I then
reactivated the boot manger.

This BM and many versions of DOS go way back.

I now have a coincidence. The 1.2 kernel has been renamed and moved,
and The boot manager cannot boot the partition. Is there actually a
cause involved here?

I have pointed the BM to both Kernlxx.sys, command.com, and fdconfig.sys.

Presumably just rename the kernel to "KERNEL.SYS" first. But you may
have to update the boot sector name, too (use SYS or maybe WDE).

What about the KERNEL location in the tree? Prior to 1.2 it was in the
root, now it is in FDOS\BIN. If I run SYS C: from a 1.1 Floppy, then
copy 1.2 KRNEL386, as KERNEL, over the 1.1 KERNEL, should that leave me
with the 1.2 kernel where it belongs on the drive?

Acronis OS Selector V 5.0 2001 (OSS). It is text based, I have it on a

anything.  SC did all that for me.

And, when Win got it's own OS, I gave them their own partition, but
there was/is only one primary: FAT 16 at the front. Every OS/2 and Win
is on a logical, including W7.

My desk tops all have two Win. two OS/2, and FreeDOS. My laptops have
two W7.
