 Hi.

For those who don't know, world of legends is a text rpg game which runs in
your console window, written in 2006 by a chap called ryan lynne.

The writing is quite haphazard in places, and parts of the game could've been
structured better, but it is nevertheless rather fun for what it is,
containing many character classes, a number of quests and different areas, a
fair few minigames, and even weapon and potion crafting.

Anyway, it was recently brought to my attention that the site and link for
 the game had gone down.

The creator has said he's sadly lost his site, and also unfortunately
isn't planning a sequal as he's moved on from games programming now (but is
stil pleased people are playing his game).

I've stuck it on sendspace for now, but some more hosting might be handy at
some point if someone has some webspace.

It's a tiny file, only 500 mb sinse it's all text and just runs in the
 console.

it can be found at http://www.sendspace.com/file/vfpkvu

Hi Dark,
As for your first point that is sadly all too true. Far too many of
the web based gamebook style rpg adventures are nothing more than pvp
stat grinders with little to kno story at all. I can't get interested
in them any more than I do roguelikes that are basically walking
around killing monsters all of the time. More than anything I want a
game with some actual story and depth to it. Even games like Sryth,
started out as a great story based gamebook type game, eventually just
became another stat grinding game with some pvp elements to it. After
that it just killed the game for me. I doubt I'm going to renew my
subscription because of that fact.
Then, we have the games like Kingdom of Loathing. To be honest I
couldn't stand that game.Oh, some of the jokes are funny the first
time you read them, but it really just turned me off in a hurry. I
want something more serious and shall we say professionally done.
For example, I haven't done a lot of table top DND roll playing, but
what DND playing I have done was always fun and entertaining. What
always drew me into the game was the story, the adventure, and the
various characters in our party. The Forbidden Relms adventures were
always cool because you could fight enemies such as the Drau and the
Dergars which haven't shown up in any web based gamebook I've seen to
date. Even in Entombed Elves are generally seen as one of the heroic
races, and there is no mention of the dark elves, the Drau, from the
Dungeons and Dragons games which would fit right into an underground
dungeon like that. Same goes for the dark dwarve races like the
Duergars that would be interesting to fight in Entombed. My rpg type
game would include such races for a more in depth game world than we
have had in audio or text based format to date.
As to your second point I'd say a game like this would probably take
three to five years to complete depending how much I worked on it in
my free time. Keep in mind even Sryth took a couple of years before
there was enough adventures etc to make it really worth paying for. I
beleive the first paid adventure was the Stoneback Hill quest. At
least a year or so before Sryth began making any money for the
developer. Well into Sryth's development, and I'd likely be faced with
a similar development sschedule. It takes time writing stories,
playing each adventure, and debugging that style of game. It isn't
like one game, but more like hundreds of smaller games rolled into one
game. Which really takes time to produce.
As to your question about sounds/music I didn't mean to indicate that
this would be an all or nothing situation. I certainly could add some
sounds and music for background ambience effects, probably add some
combat sounds here and there, but I wouldn't necessarily want to buy
hundreds of different sounds to have sounds for every item, creature,
and area of the game. That would get extremely expensive after a
while. More than people are willing to take in account at times.
Finally, as for your last point I agree. One reason I'm writing this
in C++ is to make it downloadable and so you don't have to be on the
internet the entire time. You can save your games directly to your
computer and back them up as needed. Since I now have licensed
Streemway I could certainly use it to stream music, background
ambience, and play some sounds as necessary. In that way it would be
better than something like Sryth, but maybe not as audio packed as
Entombed. I'm not sure how people would feel about that compromise.

Smile.

Re: [Audyssey] Types of RPG Games

2010-05-06 Thread Brice Mellen
Here are my thoughts, I think that text games are definitely awesome and
despite all the new stuff out I think more people play them then you think.
On Dragonrealms there are quite a few people on at all times. Now don't get
me wrong, I love dragonrealms it's a very awesome text based game and I pay
14 bucks a month and I have 2 accounts so times that by 2 and I'm also
thinking of upgrading tp premium which then I would be pay 40 bucks a month
just for one account. But I think it's worth it because of all the stuff you
can do on that game, you want bloody, gory, fantasy, real life, and more
just play dragonrealms.
But then again I keep going back to the sounds and whatnot games, this is my
problem with text based games, their too repetitive. Basically I get tired
of listen to constant streams of text and most of it repeats or otherwise,
but that's pretty much my only problem with them. But with games like final
fantasy and xeno gears/saga, I'm sorry but no matter what you do you won't
compete with them. Xeno gears was a positively awesome game up to the point
where the game I borrowed from my friend froze and I couldn't beat the last
boss (I was very angry). And Final fantasy is pretty much the king of all
rpgs for the time being. To compete with htem you would have to be a multi
millionaire with staff and developers at hand. Just not possible, but a 2000
or 3000 dollar project I would support definitely, I would donate to you if
you really decided to be serious about creating a game of that level.
Personally, I find entombed a little to confining sometimes. Stuck in that
dungeon and all, other then that it's a really awesome and fun game, and
it's also the beginning of the new age of blind accessible rpgs in my
opinion.
So, if you wanna make it or decide you have my support, I can't wait til a
game of that caliber comes out.

Subject: [Audyssey] Types of RPG Games

Hello gamers,
As many of you might remember several months ago I began designing a
gamebook style roll playing game called Legends of Etherea. When I
originally drafted the plans for the game it was to be a text based
gamebook adventure system very much in the spirit of Dungeons and
Dragons using similar rules, classes, races, etc. While the game's
story and map isn't yet complete it was going to have various towns,
cities, forests, and dungeons to explore. However, over the past
couple of months I am growing concerned that this style of game isn't
something that would do well financially. Especially, since the
release of Entombed.
Basically, what I am aiming at is over the last few years graphical
roll playing games like Final Fantasy and Xenogears have become hugely
successful titles all but making the old text based interactive
fiction systems that I personally like seam like a joke to most
mainstream gamers. Now, I'm beginning to see the same thing happening
more or less to the accessible games market as well. It is like why
bother playing text based roguelike games like Nethack or ADOM when
you can start up Entombed and wander around a dungeon doing basically
the same thing complete with Sapi support, sounds, and music. I can't
help but feel that Entombed has just raised the expectations of any
new and future roll playing games to new heights. Its like who would
pay $35 for a text only roll playing game when you can purchase
Entombed for $40 which comes complete with sounds, music, Sapi
support, etc. It makes the idea of writing and selling text only roll
playing games seam laughable. So I can't help but feel like the time
for text based games of any kind have just gone the way of the
dinosaur.
Earlier tonight when I was going through my e-mail there was a post
from Michael on the Heroes of Ardania thread. He asked if the game
came complete with sounds and music. That really got me thinking about
my own project. It seams that justabout everyone now expects sounds,
music, and if the player is sighted, killer graphics, to make a game
worth their time. Otherwise the game is considered to be inferior to
the games with graphics and sounds. So the question is how many of you
still actually like text based games like me, and how many would be
willing to pay for such a game?
understand I'm not necessarily against games like Entombed, I could
create something like that, of course, but I also have a good idea how
financially and emotionally exhausting such a title would be to me
personally. It would take ten times longer and be ten times harder to
create just because I'd have to purchase more sound packs, license
music, program all the extra code for sound, speech, menus, whatever.
So I don't know that I'm up for anything that complicated at the
moment, but I could do it if it were more financially successful. So
I'd like to hear your thoughts. What do you

I wonder if your brother has Beaton it already? THing is, being totally

Just wanted to know your brothers progress.

Hello all. The short of it is that email on the gamers list should be
trickling back through. This means that you should see messages even
from a few days ago start coming through. Now if you want more
technical details on why and how, read on. Otherwise, keep listing on
game related topics. If you have questions about this, please email
 gamers-ow...@audyssey.org, not the list.

What happened is that because we have over 300 members on the list,
many email messages were getting delayed by various email service
providers such as Comcast, Gmail, and Yahoo to name a few. The way
Mailman was configured for this list was so that this would not
happen. However due to the problems over the weekend with the server
needing to be rebuilt, things got set back to defaults. This of course
meant that Mailman would sometimes try to send 100 messages at a time.
Breaking it down. If there are 300 members on a list and 5 people
email in 5 minutes, that's a total of 1500 messages which get sent
out. 300 times 5 equals 1500. Now let's say that there are several
Yahoo subscribers. Mailman would bundle messages to quickly get them
there, but Yahoo says, hey now! Don't spam me with so many messages.
So to protect itself, it causes the messages to either bounce away or
to delay for a time. The fix is to make Mailman not send so many at
once, thus insuring a smooth list flow like we are used to. So now
that those things have been configured, mail from now on should be
delivered like what we are used to. However this also means that some
of you may either not get prior messages, or if you do get them, they
will be delayed as the queue clears out by your isp.

Hopefully things will resume like normal, but if you have any
concerns, definitely let me know. My email address is in this message,
or you can always email gamers-ow...@audyssey.org.

 Many thanks.

[Audyssey] Terraformas help

2010-05-06 Thread Lori Duncan
Hi everyone, I found this game on the net last night. It's called Terraforma
and is seemingly playible by both blind and sighted people. I was very
impressed with the voice quality, very clear as is the sound quality. I think
though it needs some work as far as a sounds menu and intigrated help, also
when the escape key is hit it quites the game without any warning so I went
through most of the training only to lose because I was in a menu and hit
escape like I would in any other audio game. I was wondering what other people
think of this game and how or if there is a way to pause gameplay. I'm running
the windows demo with xp at the moment, but hitting S to save game doesn't do
anything. Any help would be welcome. Many thanks from Lori.

Hi.

I'm stil reconsiddering buying esp pinball classic and just haven't made
up

my mind, I was waiting for more pinball party packs with more redesigned
tables, but sadly that doesn't seem to be happening (in fact goodness
knows what is! happening at Draconis). Part of the problem is that as I've
already got the pinball party pack, the wild west table in the demo isn't
so
surprising, and for obvious reasons the sound scape and gameplay of
the

packman table isn't really a great advert for the game.

I was wondering if someone might considder making game play recordings of
some of the other tables, sinse the brief clip on the draconis esp
pinball classic trailer really doesn't show too much.

Re: [Audyssey] Terraformas help

2010-05-06 Thread dark
Yep, you need to get used to hitting end to end the menue. Sinse your using
home though to go through menues this didn't seem too problematic to me.

As far as the game itself goes, I was generaly rather impressed with the
sound scapes, descriptions, and the various audio systems from coordinates
to sonar and cumpus.

My only miner niggle interface wise is when you've got two similar
objects, --- eg, two doors, they're simply referd to as door with their
coordinates, some distinction, eg, door 1 and door 2, might have been nice
and more easily let you know what objects you had or hadn't visited.

It was also very nice for me to actually have a game I could use my vision
in in connection with the sound navigation features.

What I found myself doing was using a combination of both, just as I do
in real life, though I also did have a go at turning the graffics off and
playing without.

My only really major problem with the game, is that despite the great
atmosphere and systematic mechanics, it's down right easy! everything
you need for certain puzles is in either the same room or a previous one,
there's really no need to search at all, and the layout is very symple
indeed.

In fact the only two places in the game that gave me any trouble at all were
the underwater room (mostly due to all the many objects), and one of the
puzles on the last level, the mine puzle was easy, but the tank and key
puzle was a pest.

Even the last boss was a pushover once I realized that all i needed to do
was keep moving.

In many ways Terraformers plays more like a highly advanced tech demo than a
game. I really do find myself wishing the people would actually create
something with a larger layout, actual need to explore, and where everything
wasn't handed to you on a silver platta.

Beware the grue!

Hi.

I'm stil reconsiddering buying esp pinball classic and just haven't made

my mind, I was waiting for more pinball party packs with more redesigned
tables, but sadly that doesn't seem to be happening (in fact
goodness

I've
already got the pinball party pack, the wild west table in the demo

Hi Hayden,
Its not a woman actually, the thing that you were talking about was a
basalisk. It's a big snake and it could petrifye you if you look in to its
eyes. Also remember this, you need the grafinder sword to kill it. Actually
Hayden, its quite important to kill that basalisk because it was the
attacker which attacked hogwarts. And also Sera doesn't want to be harmed...
Hope this helps.

Hi.
hmmm today I decided to get a look at the homer app from empowermentzone.com
I found, downloaded and installed the app, and looking round it saw a

on finding this installer I noticed there was a service pack for dotnet 1.1
to install since doing this though all attempts to run dotnet 1.1 apps and
only dotnet 1.1 apps fail.
they get up to a sertain point, loading sounds for railracer and on treasure
hunt they also load then error out just after the logos and in railracer
case just before the game logos start.
what is up, and how do I fix this.

Hi.

I'm stil reconsiddering buying esp pinball classic and just haven't
made up
my mind, I was waiting for more pinball party packs with more
redesigned
tables, but sadly that doesn't seem to be happening (in fact
goodness
knows what is! happening at Draconis). Part of the problem is that as
I've
already got the pinball party pack, the wild west table in the demo
isn't so
surprising, and for obvious reasons the sound scape and gameplay
of the

packman table isn't really a great advert for the game.

I was wondering if someone might considder making game play recordings
of

some of the other tables, sinse the brief clip on the draconis esp
pinball classic trailer really doesn't show too much.

Beware the Grue!

Well actually lori, Draconis did put out news of a sale at christmas.

Unlike Bavisoft, it's very obvious they're stil around as a company,
offering support and selling their games, we just haven't heard
anything developement wise out of them sinse their announcement that they
were working on game updates in 2008.

But given the time it takes to develope audio games, I personally won't
start to be really concerned until three years have past completely with no
release info, it even took David reenwood two years working on vip mud
betwene 2006 and 2008, which is just the nature of programming
unfortunately.

Hi.

Esp pinball classic was the first game.

Esp pinball extreme is the second, and thus a separate game. Then however
Draconis produced the pinball party pack volume 1, which adds 3 new pinball
tables to the esp pinball extreme game.

Hope this makes things clear.

my mind, I was waiting for more pinball party packs with more
redesigned
tables, but sadly that doesn't seem to be happening (in fact

as I've
already got the pinball party pack, the wild west table in the demo
isn't so
surprising, and for obvious reasons the sound scape and
gameplay of the

packman table isn't really a great advert for the game.

I was wondering if someone might considder making game play

some of the other tables, sinse the brief clip on the draconis

pinball classic trailer really doesn't show too much.

 Hi.

I'm stil reconsiddering buying esp pinball classic and just haven't
made up my mind, I was waiting for more pinball party packs with
more redesigned tables, but sadly that doesn't seem to be
happening (in fact goodness knows what is! happening at Draconis).
Part of the problem is that as I've already got the pinball party
pack, the wild west table in the demo isn't so surprising, and
for obvious reasons the sound scape and gameplay of the packman
table isn't really a great advert for the game.

I was wondering if someone might considder making game play
recordings of some of the other tables, sinse the brief clip
on the draconis esp pinball classic trailer really doesn't show too
 much.

Hi Hayden,
Its not a woman actually, the thing that you were talking about was a
Hope this helps.

perhaps rather than your first response being to instantly ask a question,
you might at least try and look for information yourself.

Hi Wiliam,
This isa game called House of the Midnight Son. Basically, you are a vampire
hunter, out to kill...who else? Dracula. It gets a lot more complicated than
that, as it involves collecting charms related to the apocolipse, and quite
a bit more. I really consider the ending to be some what similar to the
ending of Pirates of the Karabian, though much more depressing. Kind of
reminds me of infidel.

Re: [Audyssey] Technoshock

2010-05-06 Thread Hayden Presley
Hi,
Yes, it's definitely a good story, just ease up on the robots a bit...and
also Lori, as you said--give it some human voice narration!
Best Regards,
Hayden

Shame as the story is good, be more intreeging if there was more real voice
narration.

 Hi,
I'm thinking of trying that game, but I really don't like it much.. It's
insanely hard to even get past the first prison guards.
 Best Regards,
 Hayden

[Audyssey] shutdown for preemptive maintainance

2010-05-06 Thread shaun everiss
Hi all.
this is a cross posted message.
if you are on a list other than ones I have posteed to pass it on.
this message is to all devs and those I test with including pkb group.
due to a few gripes, 2 dotnet issues which I got into and which are disrupting
things, and the fact that I have had other issues for the last 5 years of
running this system I will be shutting down the system for a week of system
rebuilding.
Obviously I won't be online for that week though I will try to get up to speed
as quick as I can.

For all the nosy parkers that will ask me what I have done and where I have
gone to.
I have had the system for 6 years aprox now and mostly have not had any real
issue.
however sapi issues though fixed, dotnet ones due to me fiddling with setup
programs that seem to be bungish and a couple of stupid attempts on that end
errors with old and new recording software, and general cleaning, I have
decided to go through the rather long and visual process of reformatting,
selectively installing and doing a reconfig of my system.
for those that are on or are reading my casts on technology.jaredrimer.net I
will be making several podcasts as I recover with tips and such.
These casts will be uploaded as soon as I am online.
as long as I have no real issue that is, I should be ready to rock within a
few days.
ofcause things can happen but if you are really nosy I will post something
within a week.
Its probably gona take less time but I'll have a backlog of stuff which I must
clear to get sorted.
if all things go well I will be up within 3-4 days but I won't be online till
that week has passed.
I have backed up all critical files today including my dropbox archive.
for those that want to contact me unless urgent contact me next week.
if you must contact via mail I will get at your stuff as soon as I can.
if you know how then directly you can access me with the propper info but that
probably does not apply with anyone on the lists.
later
