[Audyssey] Next version of noughtsAndCrosses - adding a (simple) form of narration to a webpage itsself

2010-10-23 Thread Jacob Kruger
http://www.blindza.co.za/noughtsAndCrosses/

There should now be a form of narration in that when you focus on (tab onto it)
one of the buttons, or even hover a mouse cursor over it, you should hear the
narrative sound clips, etc.

Issue is still something to do with preload timeframes etc., since even though
the sound clips are pretty small/tiny, it still pauses a bit, but anyway...

Stay well

Hi Jim,
Hmmm...When was this? I don't remember this at all. Must have happened
before I came along.
As far as a game developer running the list I guess that depends on
the developer in question. I am certainly a game developer, but I'd
never personally disrupt the list when you or anyone else puts out a
new game release. That is simply wrong, and is childish in my book.
In fact, I encurrage game developers to release games. Sure we might
disagree over APIs, programming languages, target platform, etc but I
am not threatened by more games. Sheesh...I have a number of your
games installed on my windows computer at home, and enjoy playing them
from time to time. Disrupting the list would be counter productive.
Just goes to show James wasn't the nicest guy out there I guess.

Smile.

Hi,

No, I didn't say it was a bug to not be able to close doors, but the one
step missing when you switch rooms. But if you don't want to implement
closing doors, that's fine.

Hi,
Very true. Although, at the moment I'm more concerned about the stupid
blue screen errors which I can't seam to fix. On Linux beta 15 runs
great. No errors, crashes, lock ups, whatever. On Windows several
people say it locks up and blue screens on exit. There doesn't seam to
be a logical cause or solution to it.
On thursday I released an update to the private testers that made the
blue screen go away, but we got a segmentation fault instead. I fixed
the segmentation fault this morning, and the blue screen returned. It
is the most unbelievable and unexplainable bug I've ever seen in my
life.
I don't know if the bug is related to SFML or there is some other
weird bug in the engine. If it is SFML I could switch over to SDL and
use that instead. However, SDL isn't quite as good as SFML. Sigh...

something else and see if that will make the game and engine more

Hi,
Right. It is not a bug. I never added the ability to close doors,
because it never occurred to me anyone would want or need a feature
like this in a side-scroller. Most side-scrollers I've played,
mainstream ones that is, don't have you closing doors so I didn't do
it either. Now, though, I've spent so much time on writing and
rewriting the engine etc I need to get a move on with the game itself.
I'd still like to have it completed or near complete by Christmas
time, and we've got a lot of work to go before that happens.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA suggestion

2010-10-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Besides, you couldn't close doors in classic side scrollers so you shouldn't
be able to here. And as was said earlier enemies don't follow you so there's
no point.

Hi Sky,
I'm glad to know you haven't had the dreaded blue screen error, but
unfortunately a lot are still having it. Fortunately, I'm working on a
solution for that problem as we speak.
As for closing doors and replacing statues I have to agree with others
on this issue and wonder why you find it important. It is not a matter
of I can't do it, but that you are asking for quite a bit of extra
work adding a feature that has very little value from my standpoint.
I've got a number of errors I need to run down and fix, still need to
finish adding joystick/mouse support to the engine, have at least 10
levels to complete, need to add in the registration system, etc. I
have quite enough work for the next two/three months just getting the
game and the engine itself up and fully running if I hope to make a
Christmas release or close to it. I really don't want to spend a day
or two working on features that has no real value to the average gamer
at the expense of getting the game done and ready for sale. So unless
you can give me a compelling reason to do it I'm sorry to say I can't
afford to spend time on a feature like this right now.

Cheers!

I pointed out the use of the r key merely to verify that you can tell, by
closely listening, that you have entered another room through an open
doorway. In some rooms, this can be verified by, let's say, the sound of
fire pits, a swinging rope, a statue, or other sounds. If you are

walking,

and you take a step but hear nothing, then take another step and hear the
step, you have entered another room. To verify this, press r, back up 2
steps and press r, and you will find that you are in the previous room.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA suggestion

2010-10-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Peter,
In MOTA enemies can not follow you to a different room. In many
respects the game is similar to a lot of classic side-scrollers where
enemies are placed in a specific room or area and can't leave it. So
closing a door would have no effect on that aspect of the game.

Kendo is actually quite blind friendly- I had some absic training in that

There were Chinese-made games for the PC that uses Mandarin, none of them
particularly well known though, and I don't think any of them is fighting
game.
You ever finish the game with Raven in tekken 5? Lol when he saw what kind
of monster he was supposed to fight his reaction was funny!
Here I guess is where the Tekken plot goes slightly wacky: fighting human
is
one thing, but when faced with something monsterous like Jintachi, guys
like

Lei and Raven who carry firearms should act accordingly and just use
whatever they got rofl.
I mean, if it's alright for Yashimitsu to use a laser sword...why can't
Lei

use his gun? lol
I think that's what attracts me to the Toshinden series- quite a few
fighters in there do use firearms rofl.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA suggestion

2010-10-23 Thread Charles Rivard
I pointed out the use of the r key merely to verify that you can tell, by
closely listening, that you have entered another room through an open
doorway. In some rooms, this can be verified by, let's say, the sound of
fire pits, a swinging rope, a statue, or other sounds. If you are walking,
and you take a step but hear nothing, then take another step and hear the
step, you have entered another room. To verify this, press r, back up 2
steps and press r, and you will find that you are in the previous room.

Hi,

I would say that feature adds a bit more to the realism of the game. I
would find it interesting to have it.
Also it helps not getting lost sometimes. If you for example don't have a
torch and walk through one room and into the next, it is hard to tell
when the old room ends and the new room begins. Just close the door, and
you already know where you are.

Hi Charles,
The creatures can't follow you to another room, probably due to a magic
spell placed on them to defend their territory.
Which is good because swinging the sword tires you out and backing to the
previous room allows you to regain your strength.

If you listen closely, you can tell when you enter another room. If you
use the r key as you walk, you will notice that a step is missing. That
is the point at which you move from one room into another through an open
doorway.

I actually liked the story of Monkey Business. As for James nobody really k
nows what he's up to these days, only that so far as we can tell he's no
longer developing, or if he is it's for his personal enjoyment. While I
agree he could have handled things better I don't blame him in the least for

throwing in the towel. People in this community seriously overreacted, even
if their discontentment was justified. But it's people like that who make it

harder on the rest of us and give blind people a bad name. But it's as I've
said before, all we can do is learn from the mistakes he made and do our
best not to repeat them. I for one don't plan on taking preorders on games
or if I do it won't be until I know the game is well and truly on the home
stretch to release.

Re: [Audyssey] Preordering was Max Shrapnell

2010-10-23 Thread Trouble

I agree with what Thomas stated below.
Just because one fool burned a lot don't mean others do.
Ask questions, don't ramble about when its coming. That info comes in
the answers to the questions.

At 01:57 AM 10/21/2010, you wrote:

Hi,

Shaun wrote:
OUT of ALL THAT THOUGH WE HAVE LEARNED NOT TO PREORDER TILL WE HAVE A

My reply:
Well, I certainly agree the way James North handled the preorders was
definitely not the way to go about it, but I also believe that doesn't
completely rule out having some sort of preorder option available for
small time developers.
Che Martin, for example, had a great preorder system going for Rail
Racer. What he did that made it work is he had an early alpha or beta
version ready to go so even if people preordered early they got the
full game such as it was every few days untl the final release of the
project. Plus they got up to date news of what was happening and ai
fairly good idea when a next update would appear. All of it was to the
good, and showed he could be trusted with their money.
One major reason why James North got burned for his preordering is he
was too closed mouth about everything, and made a lot of promises he
couldn't keep. For example, I placed an order for Montezuma's Revenge
in December 2004 with the understanding the game was to ship around
Christmas. Next thing we knew it was delayed, because of something
about a problem with the registration system, and he was holding it
back to fix that. Months later he was pressured into releasing a demo
of Montezuma's Revenge. To Everyones amazement the game was far from
complete, and had a number of notable bugs like the ladder bug. The
very bug I ended up fixing personally when I got the source code.
To make a long story short he did a lot of things wrong. He should
have put out a demo early on before he took any preorders. Instead of
saying the game was going to be done for Christmas he should have been
more open and honest about what was left to be done with the game such
as he had two levels and a bonus level complete, and had a third level
that was never released to the general public but I found on the cd of
materials he sent me. There was no registration system at all in the
game which could mean two things. If he had one he yanked it out
before giving me the source code, or the more likely explanation there
never was one to begin with. whatever the case he did intentionally
mislead everyone about the development progress until he was pressured
into releasing the demo that was far from complete. Not being
completely honest with the public was definitely his first mistake,
and the source of most of his problems with the community.
Basically, i feel if a developer chooses to take preorders they can do
so with the understanding they release demos, trailers, news letters,
etc to keep everyone informed of the development process of the game.
No one expects a game to be created in a month, maybe not even six
months, but they do expect to be kept honestly informed of changes and
how much progress is being made.

Cheers!

played, no blue screen happened on when I exited the game. I do have a
suggestion for the next BETA which I believe is beta16. Could you add in
the ability to close doors? what I mean is, when you've exited a room,
could you have the ability to press the enter key on a statue or a door to

It's mostly his teleprot that jacks me up- not sure about the new capcom

a character is dashing/backing up at all- thus it's actually real tough to
guess which side you're on and react acordingly when your enemy keeps

I think this is why SNK won me over from early on- even way back with
Samurai Showdown 1 in the mid 90s they started using different sounds for
dashing, backing up, jump/super jump, etc.

Hello Thoas, I have been playing you're beta of Mota and I absolutely love
it. the pan works as expected. oddly enough, in the previus beta that I
played, no blue screen happened on when I exited the game. I do have a
suggestion for the next BETA which I believe is beta16. Could you add in
the ability to close doors? what I mean is, when you've exited a room,
could you have the ability to press the enter key on a statue or a door to
move it back into place?
