There is Fred and George's swamp on floor 5 I think where the gilly weed is,
although thinking about it now it's wierd how the weed isn't found in
Snape's office where Dobby found it.

I was actually wondering out of interest if the kitchen could be restocked
every so often and Sarah could apperate there a few times to see if the
house elves have any extra food.

Hi.

Canary creams are based on custard creams, which are a fairly common
biscuite type in Britain.

The best way of describing them is similar to orios in the states, ie,
two
biscuites stuck together with creamy stuff, accept that the biscuites
are

smaller and oblong, are a bit more crunchy, and the cream stuff in the
middle isn't as sweet or quite as thick in orios. I'm not sure where the
"custard" part comes from, though the biscuits are a light colour,
though

not quite yellow like custard.

Are you sure of your spelling of these? I cannot find any definition. I
tried both singular and plural, borbon and borbons, with no results. The
closest that I came up with was bourbon, which is a whiskey.

Hi.

Canary creams are based on custard creams, which are a fairly common
biscuite type in Britain.

The best way of describing them is similar to orios in the states, ie,
two

biscuites stuck together with creamy stuff, accept that the biscuites are
smaller and oblong, are a bit more crunchy, and the cream stuff in the
middle isn't as sweet or quite as thick in orios. I'm not sure where the
"custard" part comes from, though the biscuits are a light colour, though
not quite yellow like custard.

I remember Filch doing a lot of wandering around, though it's been a long

As to biscuites, generally anything with decent quality chocolate will
do :D.

I had to restart my game of Sarah last night, and when I was in the great

10 minutes were passed? I was playing the easy mode. Not sure if that's

Borbons are awesome!

I was trying to describe them to my American soon to be inlaws the other
day, of course in the states the closest thing are Orios which are okay,
though the cream is not half as good as the coco stuff in borbons :D.

All the best,

Ah I see Phil, that makes more sense.

Would it also be possible for the chocolate frog sweets to come with cards
like in the books, or is that too tricky to code at this point?

Take care from Lori.

Lori,
The frog card in the candy store does have a card.
It is for Albus Dumbledore,
To read it, you bring up the frog in your inventory and hit x.
It is an mp3 file spoken by a synthesized voice.
However, I could add other cards and then have them come up at random.

Lori,
The ground floor corridor includes stairs to
the basement floor and stairs to the first floor and the
dungeon levels.
As stairs both go up and down, I figured to use the down word in each
description.
So I had the map say Staircase down to ground floor corridor instead of
Staircase up to first floor corridor.
I probably should change that description because it really doesn't tell you
where the stairs are going.
Thanks,

Hi everyone, I was playing the Sarah game from PCS games last night for
old times sake, and I noticed something wierd happening while I was using
the map in the broom cupboard. Once it's done scanning the great hall it
then goes to the right where the staff room is, and then I hear sarah say,
"Staircase down to ground floor corridor", but I thought I already was on
the ground floor, and I know that particular staircase leads to the
basement. I wasn't sure if it was perhaps a bug, but thought I should
mention it to Phil for perhaps fixing in the update. Also when I was in
the cupboard I tried out the apperate spell just to see what'd happen, and
found myself supposedly in a corridor, but when I tried moving in any
direction I got the sound of poor Sarah smashing into a wall, so am I in a
borded up passage or something?

Also, just out of interest Phil, when Filtch leaves his office, would it
be possible to hear the office door opening? It'd be so cool to be right
outside when he opens it, then you could see if you could run away in time
rather than apperate.

I really hope the update comes out soon, I can't wait to try out those
skiving snack boxes on Filtch, just a shame they don't work on Peeves. :)

Hi, has the game actually started up, when you hit enter on the game it
comes up with a blank screen for some reason, but hitting enter a second
time should play a magical ding sound then you should hear the pcs games and
Draconis logo music, then it should take you to the main menu with Sarah's
voice. If you're hearing nothing, then try going into run as admin while
hovering over the Sarah game icon.

Hi Will,

Its easy to make a request or demand that a certain game developer
port his or her games to Mac, but you also need to consider the
technical expertise and tools to make such a thing possible.

The Sarah game was written in the GMA Engine which requires very
little to no actual programming to develop games. Since the GMA Engine
was written in Visual Basic 6 it will only run on Windows. What you
are proposing is that Phil learn a full blown programming language
like C++ or C# .NET and then rewrite the game from scratch for a OS he
doesn't even own..

Second, in order to develop software for a Mac he would have to
purchase a new Mac running the latest version of Mac OS X on it.
Unlike Linux which is free Phil can't just go out and buy and install
Mac OS on a virtual machine for software development. He needs the
whole works both hardware and software to develop games for Mac.

While I sympathize with your frustration at not having good high
quality games for the Mac rather than complaining about it here is two
options you can do to resolve that problem. One, you can donate the
money or a Mac computer to a developer such as myself who has the
technical expertise to do what you per pose. Two, you can stop wining
about not having games and begin learning how to program games for
your Mac. If you don't like those options, "tough titty said the

I am a Linux user myself, and I could make the same complaint that
there aren't a great deal of audio games for Linux. However, the
difference is I am doing something about that problem and have spent
some time this year porting my Evolution Engine to Linux and have
removed the code for DirectX and other Windows APIs and replaced them
with SDL. Rather than expecting Draconis Entertainment, PCs Games, GMA

Conflict, Mysteries of the Ancients, Raceway, and everything else I

enough you just have to do it yourself or pay someone who can..

Re: [Audyssey] sarah game for mac?

2013-04-22 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Will.

Yes, they do, though not as many as under Windows its true. Draconis is
trying to fill this gap, also you can play text based interactive fiction
with your mac, so you aren't entirely devoid of entertainment.

Hi Paulette,
I released the Sarah game at the end of 2005, seven years ago.
Since then the rest of the Harry Potter movies and books have been released.
It is based on a time right after Order of the Phoenix.
I am working on an update the corrects some of the missing information that
were not in the books but is now being released on the Pottermore web site.
I just checked and my web site is down temporarily.

Re: [Audyssey] Sarah game

2010-09-28 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Hayden,
I numbered the levels in the Sarah game as chapters as you do go down and up
from the first level.
The game engine forces me to use positive numbers for each level so I can't
marked the basement as sub 1 and the dungeon as sub 2 and the chamber of
secrets as sub 3.
In the original demo, I had both the basement and dungeon on the first
chapter but the game slowed down so much that I was forced to split off the
dungeon, and arbitrarily named it chapter 11.
Then after chapter 8 which is the seventh floor, you have seven towers to
visit so I had to split some of them off as separate chapters.

In the current version there are six,
The owlery,
the Astronomy tower,
The headmaster's tower,
The divination classroom,
and the two house towers.
In the update I am working on I added the clock tower.
I think J.K. Rowling used the number 7 in the books many times such as 7
years of study, 7 floors in the castle, and ultimately 7 books in the series.

Phil

Hi, Shaun.
Yes, David apparently has been attempting to fix some of the problems
with compatibility issues with Vista and Windows 7, but I can't say
when he will release said updates to the general public. All I can say
is he showed up on my developers list a few months back looking for
suggestions how to resolve problems with DirectSound 3D buffers
playing back correctly on newer PCs running Windows Vista and Windows
7. Apparently he had found a solution, but as yet there have been no
new versions of Shades of Doom, Tank Commander, etc baring this new
patch. So I guess we all just have to wait and see.
In the mean time if someone owns a copy of VmWare's VMPlayer for
Windows it is a good idea to install XP via a virtual machine and play
games that way. Truth is in terms of accessible games Windows XP is
the best solution right now. It will probably remain so until more
accessible games are updated to support Windows 7 directly, and uses
more up to date technologies like XAudio2 instead of DirectSound.

Cheers!

suggestions how to resolve problems with DirectSound 3D buffers
playing back correctly on newer PCs running Windows Vista and Windows

Cheers!

Hi, Lori.
Well, sorry to disappoint you, but none of the statues offers a secret
way into the kitchen. The most direct route is to go through the door
with a picture of a pair on it. There is also a secret entrance off
one of the hallways, but can't give you directions how to find it off
the top of my head.

Re: [Audyssey] Sarah game

2010-09-26 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Shaun,
Yes the new GMA engine now does pan sounds correctly for those with Vista
and Windows 7.
Once David releases it I think it will work on all of the GMA games that use
the engine.
The new engine also gives you support for moving with the mouse, but that
requires a data file for each game that is different.
This requires David and me to adjust the settings for each game, and decide
how the game responds to the mouse movement.
I am using the new engine file for the update to Sarah that has taken a lot
longer to finished than I expected.
Real life problems, especially with taking care of two elderly dogs has
prevented me from spending the amount of time I had planned on working on
the game.
I hate to make predictions, but I am determined to get the update done in
October.

Phil

Hi Lori,
Not that I'm aware of. However, as for the statues only one of them
actually leads somewhere. If you take the one nearest to the
Caretaker's office it will take you up to the first floor. If you take
the other one it leads to a dead end. So I hope that that might clear
things up a bit.

Hi mauricio
The update to Sarah 1.2 is free.
I am still working on it.
I am giving each spell a different amount of magical energy require to cast
them instead of all the same, which means some spells like unlocking doors
takes only a small amount and spells to teleport you or to break down walls
will take a great deal more magical energy.

Just in: After four months of deliberating, Judge Robert Patterson has
ruled that the Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and wizardry game
infringes J.K. Rowling’s copyright in the Harry Potter series.

According to the AP, Judge Patterson granted an injunction, ruling that
Rowling had proven that PCS Game’s “Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and
wizardry” would cause her irreparable harm as a writer.

The suit, filed late last year against PCS Games, an independent game
developing company in Michigan, alleged that plans by Michigan-based game
developer PCS Games to sell a game, Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and
wizardry, who's Web site that serves as a rather daunting compendium of
all games for the blind, violated Warner and Rowling’s copyright and takes
away the future market for a similar game that Rowling and Electronic Arts
plans to develop.

Here’s the opinion.

Judge Patterson ruled in Rowling’s favor because the “Sarah game"
appropriates too much of Rowling’s creative work for its purposes.” He
also wrote that, “While the Sarah game, in its current state, is not a
fair use of the Harry Potter works, games that share the Sarah game’s
purpose of aiding blind game players of being able to play a Harry Potter
game generally should be encouraged rather than stifled.”

Ethan Horwitz, an IP lawyer at King & Spalding, told the Law Blog: “What
Judge Patterson is saying is that when you look at fair use, one of the
dominant issues is, are you providing commentary or taking the value of
the work and selling it as your own? He decided that the value of the work
was being taken, that [Rowling] had the ability to develop the kind of
game that PCS Games was putting out, and that she’d indicated an intent to
do so.”

Subject: [Audyssey] Sarah game infringes J.K. Rowling’s copyright

Just in: After four months of deliberating, Judge Robert Patterson has ruled
that the Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and wizardry game infringes J.K.
Rowling’s copyright in the Harry Potter series.

According to the AP, Judge Patterson granted an injunction, ruling that
Rowling had proven that PCS Game’s “Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and
wizardry” would cause her irreparable harm as a writer.

The suit, filed late last year against PCS Games, an independent game
developing company in Michigan, alleged that plans by Michigan-based game
developer PCS Games to sell a game, Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and
wizardry, who's Web site that serves as a rather daunting compendium of all
games for the blind, violated Warner and Rowling’s copyright and takes away
the future market for a similar game that Rowling and Electronic Arts plans
to develop.

Here’s the opinion.

Judge Patterson ruled in Rowling’s favor because the “Sarah game"
appropriates too much of Rowling’s creative work for its purposes.” He also
wrote that, “While the Sarah game, in its current state, is not a fair use
of the Harry Potter works, games that share the Sarah game’s purpose of
aiding blind game players of being able to play a Harry Potter game
generally should be encouraged rather than stifled.”

Ethan Horwitz, an IP lawyer at King & Spalding, told the Law Blog: “What
Judge Patterson is saying is that when you look at fair use, one of the
dominant issues is, are you providing commentary or taking the value of the
work and selling it as your own? He decided that the value of the work was
being taken, that [Rowling] had the ability to develop the kind of game that
PCS Games was putting out, and that she’d indicated an intent to do so.”

April Fool!
smiles,
Phil

Re: [Audyssey] Sarah game.

2008-11-04 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Chris,
As an owner of both Shades of Doom and Sarah I personally don't see any
similarities between the two games besides the fact they are both First
Person style games and the fact they use the same engine. I'd be
interested to know why you think they are similar.
As a developer myself I am currently writing a fully qualified game
engine along the lines of the GMA Engine, but with a full 3D
environment. The advantage of a game engine is that a developer can
quickly build and produce games faster. The down side is that the games
will share things like some basic keyboard commands, common menu
systems, etc. That may turn people away thinking the games are too much
alike even though it is intentionally designed that way to put games
together faster by having to avoid recreating the wheel so to speak.

2008-11-02 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Charles,
I hate to correct you as you are so smart, but I developed the game and
Draconis sells it.
I would sell it myself if it didn't cost so much to get a credit card
system.
I was quoted that the cost would be $100 for the setup then a charge of $50
per month so without selling a single game I would have to spend $700 in the
first year and $600 every year in the future.
As Draconis already has a credit card system I didn't want to do the same
when they were willing to sell my game for a percentage of the price of each
game sold.

And, if you read carefully, the Draconis Shop instructs you to put
your 4 digit code in the notes field of your order. This is the best
way to keep Phil sane, and get your registration key quicker if you
order from Draconis. You could also send the code by owl, but even
Eeylops owls tend to be slower than email.

Hi Davy,
Wow, you know the game better than I do!
I forgot about the large bottle in the basement!
I was thinking abut potion bottles and sherry bottles and butterbeer bottles
but not about the large bottle that I put the Hufflepuff common room in.
Well at least until August when we may visit the other two common rooms in
the last Harry Potter book.
thanks for reminding me about that bottle.

To use that bottle, you need a password and to get the passwords you must
read the map.

hi,
I have some questions about sarah game (i didn't write before as i wanted
to figure it out alone).
I progressed in the playing, and figured out with 6 needed object of 10
available on the ground floor.
I found:
the map, the remembrall, the flute, the headless hat, the broom and the
mirror.
I remember once I managed to learn some passwords too, as discendium and
ascendium, I suppose but I do not remember how I figured this out! If I
just read the map or more.
The problem now is that I am blocked, I find, in my way through the game,
some sounding characters (and statues) especially in the basement. One is a
singing male voice, another is a laughing male voice, another is a laughing
picture, the other one is 2 gargoyles, and the last is another male voice
saying something like welcome or incoming or you're coming I don't
understand what the monster says. But they are not real monsters, they are
figures which do not move, they just stand there, being guardians of doors
(I suppose, as the gargoyles for example are the guardians of the staff
room door)
I tried everything to defeat them, but spells do not work, and even playing
the flute.
I found also a bottle, but I do not know how to pick it up! The shift+d
combination tells me there is the bottle somewhere, but when I reach the
desired distance, I do not hear the item detector saying bottle, bottle,
bottle, as I suppose it should be if the object could be picked up.
as I think to have explored all feet and broom explorable rooms, I suppose
the remaining 4 object needed to progress with the game, are behind doors
guarded by those figures.
thanks for suggestions

Re: [Audyssey] sarah game: problems with some characters.

2007-05-06 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Talksina,
I think you are talking about the four suits of armor.
On the ground floor they laugh and sing and do nothing else.
I put them in the game to help you in detecting where you are, and because
they are in the Harry Potter books in a slightly different way.
On other floors they sometimes walk around and
none of the spells you have will affect them,
so they become moving obstacles.
spoiler
space
Once you get the map from the caretaker's office, you need to read it.
You do this by hitting tab, arrowing down to it and hitting enter.
You can stop the reading by hitting your alt key.
Now you will have the four extra passwords in your passwords list.
Although there are bottles on other floors I did not put one in the ground
floor and basement levels.

If you need more help write to,
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
that's me.

Hi Nicol,
Sarah game,
spoiler,
space,
I added the brooms to the things the accio spell will attract.

And there already was a golden egg you had to get in the game.

Lets see if I can remember book4. The only critical thing harry needed
for which he used the achio spell was his broom. Fighting the Hungarian
dragon was the first tri wizard tournament task. Only his wand was
allowed so he used the achio spell to get his broom to him.
So that means that the moment sarah gets near to the Hungarian dragon
she will also in some strange way loose her broom and have to get it
with the achio spell? Will sarah also have to pick up the golden egg?

Subject: [Audyssey] Sarah game changes in patch 3

Hi Folks,
In the new Sarah game patch, number 3,
here are the changes in no particular order:

I did not want you to go down to
the dungeon without getting at least 4 magic items.
That is why I originally put a minimum on the secret passage too.
Of course you had to get at least two to get to the first floor.
So now the object list comes up if you have not picked up enough of
them,
but I do not say how many you need to open the door.

The goblin now wears shoes so you will hear him walking
and the Caretaker too.

I've improved the accio spell,
and it now can get something that was critical
in the fourth Harry Potter book.

I added the spell that creates a burning x in the air.
When you walk away and walk back and get
within five feet of the mark you will hear a fire sound and sara saying
x 1 for the first mark and so on.

I fixed some of the headless hats,
so you can now pick them up.

I made the door snore sound louder.

I added an adjusted passwords list to each floor
so you only get the ones you can use.

I made more use for the burning and fire putting out spells.
They now put out and light all fireplaces and torches.
Plus there is now a reason to put out some of the fireplace fires
since they may reveal things not noticed before.

I have fixed the basilisk sword attacks so
the dead basilisk does not land on you,
and does not crash the game.

I added a new corridor connecting the east and west segments of the
basement.

I changed the name of the password from Hilga to Helga.

I added a picture over the Ravenclaw fireplace.
It was already in the game just not described.

If Sarah drops her racing broom while still using it she falls and
loses magical energy.
Note to use the broom you must hit enter on it from the inventory.
To get off the broom you repeat this procedure.
To drop the broom you hit d on it in the inventory.
Be careful when flying on the Quidditch pitch and dropping your broom
while on it, since this will now be very bad.

I added a cash register sound when buying candy

Since I had to change all the floors
I removed your saved games list since your older
saved games would not have the fixed bugs.

I revised the SCW.txt to add more help in using things
like the brooms.

I suggest anyone who has download the game get this patch at,
http://www.pcsgames.net

Hi Phil,
Ok, I am not using JFW but Window Eyes 6.1 on my Vista machine so JFW is
certainly not the cause here. In any case after loading the game I
unload WE from memory.
Second, you asked if the i key has the same problem as up arrow. I don't

Re: [Audyssey] Sarah game freezing, and locking up.

2007-03-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Karl,
Normally, I would agree with you on that except it doesn't last for a
few seconds. This has resulted in complete freezes in the game in a
couple of cases. Also only the arrow keys seam to be effected.
Everything else works.
It could still be resources since Vista is a resource hog in it's own
right and Sarah probably is a little resource intensive as well judging
by all the sounds and effects going.

Re: [Audyssey] Sarah game freezing, and locking up.

2007-03-20 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Tom,
Do you have the same slow down using the I key for forward?
If not it may be a JFW in memory grabbing the key problem.
If you hit control c to clear your buffers does that fix the problem
temporarily?
If so, you may have to adjust the buffers in the text file SCW.INI.
Hope these help.
Phil

I experienced the same with sod and I'm using xp.
Well I haven't paid attention to the coordinates, but it sometimes
happened that when I set my character to walk at a fast speed it also
walks very slow and then pause and then walk. If I exit sod and start it
again, it works fine.

Subject: [Audyssey] Sarah game freezing, and locking up.

Hi Phil,
I have one very consistant error, bug, or problem with Sarah that
happens quite often. I'm not sure if this is a result of me using Vista,

if this issue is related to system resources, or what, but it happns all

the time to me.
I know you are suppose to use the up arrow and down arrow to speed up
and slow down Sarah's walk. However, what happens on my system it will
work normal for a while and about aminute or so in to game play even at
a fast run with the up arrow all the way forward Sarah moves exgtremely
slow, step, pause, pause, pause, step, pause, pause, pause, step, and so
on.
I noticed when using control+w for coordinates Sarah doesn't seam to be
moving, and is sort of frozen in place although all of my other keys
seam to be responding. However, the arrows don't seam to respond. In
stead I get that step and pause thing.
What is most annoying about this bug or error in the game is if I am
trying to run out of range of the cat or a ghost I suddenly get in to
this frozen loop and they more often as not catch up with me while I am
locked up in that freeze state.
Any ideas about this bug? Does this happen with anyone else?
Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Sarah game freezing, and locking up.

2007-03-20 Thread Karl
Hi,
Sounds like a system resources thing. I sometimes notice the same
problem if my CPU is being taxed by something else, but it only lasts
for a couple seconds before snapping out of it.
