Re: [Audyssey] Missile Command was Triple J Shooter
Brian I ran across a pac-man record. It sounds like the same one; the voice acting is tacky kid poor with cute track names like "take the fruit and scoot." It's hard to find a physical copy now but youtube has a couple of tracks. I had the Microsoft Arcade version of Missile Command about 10 years ago (I go it on a floppy from a friend along with the PC version of Mortal Kombat 1). You used A S and D to choose which "missile bass" you shot from and the mouse to aim. Thanks for clearing up how it actually worked as I really didn't have any idea. Hi David, Yeah, thanks, a shell drop sound for the incoming missile and a beeping for the targeting indicator. Just have to find or play with it so that it does not become too annoying to listen to. I had the same trouble when wanting to make a game of Pong. Sorry, but I have not found or experimented with VB6 slash DirectX mouse input code. So it will be like Triple J Shooter, that is joystick and keyboard. The joystick other than this one being bigger and having lots more buttons will be for me like playing Missile Command on my Atari 2600. Hello Jim, For the incoming missile, how about a windy mild whistling sound which is descending in pitch. This sound would be placed somewhere in the stereo field. If it is at an angle, it would move across the stereo field as it descends. For the targeting pointer, use a solid quiet beeping which pans across the stereo field and rises or lowers in pitch depending on where you move it. The missiles would be an explosion sound which is at the pitch of where the targeter was when it was fired, and covers the pitch and pan range of the explosion. Any missiles which enter the explosion radius would then vanish. If it could track my touch pad or mouse input, it would really be like the original game. Re: [Audyssey] Missile Command was Triple J Shooter
Hi, Having played this game wit sight, the description below is pretty accurate. I have only a few things to add: 1. A trackball moved a plus sign on the screen. That was your targeting pointer. Where it was when the missile was launched is where it was going to explode. 2. Below each missile site, they had a graphical display of how many missiles there are, and how many left. I believe each site started with 10 or 15 missiles. If you pressed a button for a site with no missiles left, the machine would make a low level beep to let you know that site was empty. 3. In the later levels, not only did the missiles come in faster, but they many times would split. Sometimes 2 or more from one missile. Sometimes even those missiles that split may split again. Those were the tough ones. 4. Once all your cities were destroyed, which only takes one missile, the game was over. 5. After each round, a bonus was calculated, and added to your score, for each missile and city left. The arcade concil game had three missile silos, on the left, middle, and right, which protected your ten cities. It took longer for the missile fired from the left silo to cross to the right side of the screen, so you needed to set your targeting x appropriately when doing cross-screen shots. Re: [Audyssey] Missile Command was Triple J Shooter
Hi Thomas, Yes, we are talking about the same 1982 Atari 2600 Missile Command game. It could have been a laser cannon, but I thought that they were missiles and that was a missile trail that we saw so that we saw where they were going. The main reason that I thought that they were missiles was because when they got to where you targeted they exploded if they hit the incoming missile or not. Didn't figure that a laser would do that. But I should also say that I never ever read any of the game instructions or story. Just popped that cartridge in and started playing. Re: [Audyssey] Missile Command was Triple J Shooter
Hi Jim, Well, I was thinking more of Troopenum here when you mentioned Missile Command, because the games do have a couple of things in common. Even though Troopenum is technically suppose to be a Space Invaders clone the Gorbian levels are more like Missile Command than Space Invaders. On the Gorbian levels you have Gorbian ships falling down out of the sky. In addition to lining them up by using the left/right arrow keys you also have to move the barrel of your laser cannon up/down to center the target. This is why I thought of Troopenum when you mentioned Missile Command. As far as Missile Command using Patriot missiles are you sure we are talking about the same version? The version I am thinking of was released around 1982 or so for the Atari 2600. Although, I know there were PC versions released later the only one I remember playing was the old Atari game from the 1980's. That one definitely used a laser cannon. Either that or the poor graphics were so bad that it looked like a laser weapon. Cheers! Jim Kitchen wrote: Hi Thomas, In Missile Command it was more than left and right. It was also up and down. More like moving your mouse pointer around the screen and getting it in front of the in coming missile, then firing your anti missile missile. It was the patriot missile system before they used it in desert storm. Just left and right would be more like Space Invaders. It as I said was a mouse pointer before windows had a mouse. So, may I ask, is Troopenum and Aliens in the Outback more like Missile Command or Space Invaders? I think it would be cool to see a accessible asteroids game. I also think a cool shooting game would be this game called swoop for the Mac, if their was an accessible version, and it was converted for a window platform, I would play the heck out of it. - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Wednesday, December 23, 2009 7:45 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Missile Command was Triple J Shooter Hi Jim, No, the targeting for Missile Command would be completely different from TJS. Missile Command would be more like Troopenum or Aliens in the Outback, but more simple than those games. Basically you have enemy missles falling out of the sky with a laser cannon on the ground you move left/right to line them up and shoot them down. Personally, I think we already have way too many of these kinds of games already. When you consider Troopenum, Aliens in the Outback, Dark Destroyer, Judgment Day, Enemy Attack, Sonic Invaders, etc the classic 80's style arcade shooter game is getting pretty darn old. If I see any more games of that type for the blind I'm likely to scream in absolute frustration.
