   * INSTRUCTIONS FOR DESTINATION MARS *
by Richard L. De Steno
Destination Mars is a game that presents you with the challenge
of
successfully travelling from Earth to Mars. You must avoid such
dangers as
excessive damage to your ship, running out of fuel, being vaporized
by space
aliens, crashing your ship, and others.
You begin the game by placing the game diskette in your default
drive and
entering the word MARS. After the opening announcement, you will be
asked if
you want sound effects. Simply press the letter Y if you do want
sound effects
or the letter N if you would rather play the game without sound
effects. Do
not press the ENTER key at any time in the game after making a
choice that asks
for a letter. However, number entries do require a press of the
ENTER key.
Next, you are instructed to press the letter B to blast off. If you
blast off
successfully, you will begin the thirty five million mile trip to
Mars.
You travel by spinning the cosmic wheel, which is done by pressing
the
ENTER key. This produces a number from 1 to 10. Your ship then
travels two
hundred thousand miles times this number. For example, if you spin
a 6,
you
travel one million, two hundred thousand miles toward Mars on that
spin of the
wheel. Press S at the cosmic wheel prompt to toggle sound on and off.
Each spin of the cosmic wheel presents you with a situation.
Most of the
situations require you to make a choice. You will be prompted in
such cases
to press A - B - E - F - R - N or H. These options mean the
following:
 A is for accelerating -
B is to use your force field barrier -
E is for taking evasive action -
F is for firing your phasers -
R is for making repairs -
N is for taking no action.
H is to get help if you forget these definitions.
You may exit the game whenever you are directed to spin the
cosmic wheel,
simply press the ESCAPE key or CTRL-C. You may also exit at any of
the
preliminary prompts at the beginning of the program.
Most of the prompts in the game are self-explanatory and need no
elaboration. There are numerous ways that you may be prevented from
reaching Mars. You undoubtedly will experience them as you attempt
to reach
your destination. There are some surprises in store for you in this
regard.
Note that you use ten units of fuel with each spin of the cosmic
wheel.
Also, keep in mind that each instance of damage to your ship must be
repaired.
If you go too fast, you may enter a time warp. Here is a hint:
the
astute player will escape the time warp on the first attempt.
You may freeze the game at the prompt to spin the cosmic wheel by
pressing F and entering a file name. To resume the frozen game, enter
the file name with MARS, like this: MARS FILENAME.

Re: [Audyssey] Destenation mars

2011-05-13 Thread dark
Indeed tom, that was rather ridiculous, especially considdering neither the
original game nor the remake were accessible (in fact the old retroremake I
found of it a couple of years ago appeared to go missing too, I wonder if
the same thing happened).

While their are a few cases of companies and people who want their work out
there and played, eg, the creator of turrican who actually not only gave
permission for the games' name, graphics, music and other aspects to be used
in remakes, but also allowed the originals to be redistributed, and the
author of fallthru, these are rare cases and usually as you said the company
will scream and shout while doing nothing to get the game out to people who
may stil want to play it.

What is almost worse though, is often the company simply want the name, so
that they can produce a game later on with the old game name as a draw.

Take golden axe. The original is a classic and no mistake, however there
have been several really quite awful games bought out under the golden axe
name supposedly as part of the series.

For instance Golden axe the duel, a very bad quality one on one beat em up
on the Sega Saturn console, and more recently, a game on the xbox which is
of all things a 3D beast riding affair that plays almost like a racing or
vehicle game and is by report really not good either.
Though this really doesn't happen in terms of accessible games sinse there
are so few around, and maybe it'd be worth trying to contact this chap to
ask about the games' status.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Hey, Dark.
I agree with you. In some cases people just want to play these old dos
games because like myself I use to play them in school.
I myself just want to play these old games and not remake or change
anything. What will happen if nobody can get a hold of these different
people to ask about their games? It would be greatly sad if people can
still play some of these games and yet the people who have the games
won't pass them out to people like me who just want to play them.

Hey, Michael. Will you stop asking people for a copy of a game which has
already been shown as being copyrighted? You asked Phil, and he said that
he would not do so without permission from the creator. You asked if anyone
on the list would do so as a reply to a post that showed the copyright info.
What part of no don't you understand? If you do understand the concept of
no, why won't you take no for an answer? Quit flooding the list with
requests that you should already know the answer to. You're acting like the
little kid who goes to Mom for candy and she says No., so you go to Dad
for candy, he says No, so you go to brother, sister, uncle, aunt, cousin,
maybe someone, anyone at all, will give me what I want.

The games really rock.
it would be good to get them converted to windows.
Firstly since they were designed for the 386 all sound goes crazy fast.
one thing I noticed with my games, say frotz or tads using the
emulators or even the standalone games or even agt games is they will
play but hitting backspace is hmmm impossible.

all keys bar the back space key work.
Its my ownly complaint otherwise standard dos under ntvdm and the cmd
.exe system files works.
I wouldn't mind another emulator which would allow the deleting of
characters though.

 Hi Folks,

There are other programs available from Richard De Steno. Check the

He was really going back in 1997 making the dos version fully

at making a version 2 of the arena title series and even more.
Sadly he has gone or his email has gone and I'd like to get back in

Hi Michael,
No, I think Richard allowed version one of Destination Mars to be
put up as a free demo so people would buy version two.
Unless I get a confirmation directly from Richard that his games
can be distributed free, I will not upload it.

As a matter of fact do you think you could upload the two games I

In fact, I did track down the game bramina hosted on a site about old doss

The problem michael, is that doss games sites list both playable and
unplayable ones.

Searching google or the if archive can be useful, but a lot of these things
need to be looked at carefully.

that's why I'm stil creating audiogames.net pages for games like bramina and

I already have destination mars anyway, simply because I wanted to try it

if somebody would like to host these games, I'd be glad to create pages

Hey, Dark.
If you give me your personal email address I'll send you destination

Hopefully when someone see these games if they have the last or updated
version of these games they will be willing to give them out.

Hi,

Same here. Creating a cross-platform or modern Windows remake wouldn't
be a problem, but seeing as it was once retail and its copyright
status is unknown it it wouldn't be wise to just jump in and start
distributing old copies or create a modern remake.

Cheers!

Michael I believe stuck it on dropbox, but I'm afraid I don't have the link.

Gernerally though I try not to put dropbox or other file sharing links on
audiogames.net sinse there's no guarantee of availability generally
speaking, which is why it's better if someone hosts them.

While I'm all for respecting the developers of games and seeing their hard

Hi Folks,
Here is info about the developer of Destenation mars
From: The Braille Monitor January, 1990
There is a new computer game for IBM and IBM compatible computers. It is
called CASINO. It actually is three games in one: blackjack; slot machine;
and a four-card poker game called flash poker. It is fully usable with a
screen-reading program and a speech synthesizer or by a sighted person from
the screen. It has sound effects and other features. For your copy, send a
check in the sum of $15 to:

Richard De Steno,
20 Meadowbrook Road,
Short Hills, New Jersey 07078;
or call (201) 379-7471 for more information.
The game will be sent on a five and a quarter inch diskette unless a three
and a half inch is requested.

Dodge City Desperados is a new computer adventure game for IBM and IBM-
compatible computers that works well with speech output. The player becomes
the sheriff of Dodge City in the days of the wild West, hunting down the
desperados in town, something that's not so easy to do. For your copy, send
a $20 check to

Destination Mars
Review by Patrick R Davis:

I want to review a game by Richard Destino. It has been around
for some time, but it is still good. There is an old version on
Dave
Poehlman's web page at www.clark.net/pub/poehlman/readme.htm and
you can
buy it from Ann Morris Enterprises. Destination Mars is a game
where you
have to get to Mars, but you have to get through certain hazards
such as
asteroid fields and alien ships. You can also collect gold,
diamond, and
platinum off some asteroids. You can use the metals to get fuel,
phaser
power cells, and a new force field generator from space stations.
Also,
things will break on your spaceship and you will have to find a
place to
repair them. It is pretty good, but there are a couple of things
that I
think he could improve. The first thing is when firing at alien
ships,
the computer decides whenever you hit them or not. I think Richard
could
have used audio input to aim and shoot. For example, he could have
used
some descending tones and put a low tone somewhere in the middle of
it
that someone would have to hit a key on to fire. Another thing he
could
do to improve it is to put a feature on it that would tell you how
many
repairs are needed. I also heard that he is going to add some
sounds to
his game.
He has also made a game called Dodge City Desperadoes.
Unfortunately there isn't an older version on Dave's web page, but
you
can buy it from Ann Morris Enterprises. I haven't won this game
yet. In
this game, you have to catch 3 desperadoes that are in The town to
cause
trouble. You also have to find them before your time runs out.
There is
a lot of things you need to look for before you can catch them
however.
The game is okay but I think it needs some extra work done on it.
For
example, it would be easier if he had the word limit for 3 or 4
words
instead of 2. I also think it would be easier if the game used the
arrow
keys to get around town with instead of always typing. Other than
that,
it is a pretty good game. Both of his games cost about $20.00.

There are other programs available from Richard De Steno. Check the
README.DOC file provided with this program, or contact him for info

Hi Folks,
Here is info about the developer of Destenation mars
From: The Braille Monitor January, 1990
There is a new computer game for IBM and IBM compatible computers. It is
called CASINO. It actually is three games in one: blackjack; slot machine;
and a four-card poker game called flash poker. It is fully usable with a
screen-reading program and a speech synthesizer or by a sighted person
from the screen. It has sound effects and other features. For your copy,
send a check in the sum of $15 to:

Richard De Steno,
20 Meadowbrook Road,
Short Hills, New Jersey 07078;
or call (201) 379-7471 for more information.
The game will be sent on a five and a quarter inch diskette unless a three
and a half inch is requested.

From: The Braille Forum, November 1994
Dodge City Desperados is a new computer adventure game for IBM and IBM-
compatible computers that works well with speech output. The player
becomes the sheriff of Dodge City in the days of the wild West, hunting
down the desperados in town, something that's not so easy to do. For your
copy, send a $20 check to
Richard De Steno, 20 Meadowbrook Rd., Short Hills, NJ 07078, or call (201)
379-7471 for more information. Please specify which size disk you want.
Other games are also available.

From: Future Reflections Fall 1995,
After doing some research with vendors and organizations I have discovered
that there are a few programs which were written by and for the blind.
These programs are all text-based programs. These are the titles:

Guess the Capitals,
Atlantic City Black Jack,
Casino,
Destination Mars,
Dodge City Desperado's,
Run for President,
Sounds Like.
These are all IBM compatible programs. These software programs may be
purchased through Ann Morris Enterprises, Inc. 1 (800) 454-3175 and/or
through Ferguson Enterprises (605) 546-2366.

2011-05-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Yeah, I for one agree with you. As the author of the
http://if.illuminion.de/index.html
website said it is an aweful thing for a work of art to be lost
through the copyright holders indiference. Which, sadly, is the case
with a lot of games written by commercial companies.

For a lot of mainstream companies they write a game, sell it for all
it is worth, and then forget about it. Years later when that game can
no longer be purchased, it becomes an old classic, the companies
scream and cry over the copyright laws. I think that more than
anything else really irritated me over the Montezuma's Revenge issue a
couple of years back.

For heaven's sake the game was released by Parker Brothers in 1984.
Parker Brothers sold copies for the Atari 2600 and 5200 and then
forgot about it. Utopia comes along buys up the game makes a sequel
called Montezuma's Return, and that game itself becomes as lost to
time as the original game. In fact, I didn't even know Montezuma's
Return existed until I got the cease and desist letter. You would
think that a product like that which is now better than 25 years old
should become public domain if there haven't been any updates to it in
that length of time. Yet some people are willing to hang on to the
copyrights while barring us from enjoying it.

Cheers!

The webmaster of that site has freely said that should activision ever
contact him and request he removes the games he'd be happy to do so, but as
they are no longer available anywhere else he prefers to have them available
 to others.

ditto with fallthru and bramina, both of which i found freely hosted on old
 doss game sites.

While I'm all for respecting the developers of games and seeing their hard
work isn't sniched by someone for nothing, when this gets to the point of
disallowing people from playing games just for a vague fear of copywrite it
strikes me as a litle ridiculous.

Heck, sinse when michael posted the links was the first time I ever played
destination mars, I probably wouldn't ever have played the game legally as
it's certainly not being sold anymore.

Hey, Thomas.
I agree with you about the copyrights thing. Myself I belive that if a
game has been around for at least fifteen years and have not been
updated and is no longer for sale then people should have the right to
the game.

Especially if nobody can contact the creater of the games.
I personally don't think anyone on this list would report anybody for
passing the game or games around the list.
I know for a fact that there is not alot of people I know who play
those old accessible dos games.

I wonder if the copy of the game he was given is not legal? I believe that
the game was originally sold by one of those businesses that send
merchandise for blind people through the use of mail order catalogs. I
recall the game, written by Richard Destino, was one of several games on a
floppy disk that sold for roughly $20, although I may be mistaken on some of
my info because of the length of time since I have encountered the game.
Another game from the same set of games was Dodge City Desperadoes.

Hi Michael and all,

I'm guessing the version you have is an older one. When I purchased that
game around 1993 or so, I believe it was version 2.0.
For those who have never played this game, it was a text-based game, by
Richard de Steno, that also included PC speaker sounds. The object was to
fly your ship to Mars and land on the planet. Along the way, you had to
overcome various obstacles including aliens attacking you, being subjected
to radiation and magnetic fields, etc. You could even land on an asteroid to
look for various rocks. It was a pretty good game for it's time, and I wish
I had purchased more of the developer's works. All his games cost $20.00
each back then, and there were no demo versions as far as I know. He also
had a casino game that included four gambling games, a word game called
Sounds Like, and one called Dodge City Desperrados.

Re: [Audyssey] Destenation mars

2011-05-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Hmmm...Hard to say with an application like that. Its more than 15
years old. Even though the copyrights might still be in effect it all
depends on how the developer wants to handle it. If we could ask him
he might just say share them. Alot of games like the original Prince
of Persia for Dos from the 1990's are now free shareware games. Some
developers are really lax about sharing older games like that.
Especially, if they aren't interested in updating and reselling the
game.
