Hi Scott, I can say from personal experience Wine is more trouble than it is worth. For one thing to get Wine to run anything decently you need to install a load of Windows dll files from the Windows System 32 directory. Problem is Microsoft has all kinds of legal restrictions on what you share,

Out of interest Tom, what stops you from wanting to develop using pygame? I've been reading up on it and working through a few tutorials since you recommended it as a good way of getting up and running quickly, so far it looks pretty powerful, but are there big limitations i'm missing as a newbie?

Hi TOm, There are some flaky attempts to use DirectX via Wine on Mac OS X, but everything I've heard is that it is extremely unstable. It's possible that as far back as 10.1 that Microsoft was providing DirectX for Mac, I'm not sure. They were offering INternet Explorer for Mac and such
