[Gimp-user] batches for web

2009-07-02 Thread alec
Howdy...
I finally installed David's Batch Processor (after months of trying to
figure out how to do batches) but I'm surprised that I don't see an
option for changing resolution. I'm simply trying to prepare
images(lots of them) for the web. Did I miss something in Daves
Batches? Or maybe someone has a link to something else that would work
for me? Thanks!

Do you have a link to that plugin? I've searched quite a bit and David's
Batch processor has seemed the best so far, but I'm still(after a couple
years now) new to GIMP.

Resolution (as in dots-per-inch) is irrelevant for images used on
web-pages. The only thing that counts is the number of pixels.

Huh, I thought that lower resolution would make the file size smaller so
web images would load faster. No?

That is also incorrect. We figured that the code that calls the
default web browser on Windows does not work for some users. As we
have no idea why this call fails, we have now added better error
handling in this part of the code. So in the next release, there
should at least be some sort of error message that will hopefully be
useful when it comes to locating the root of the problem.

Thanks for the clarification. So help DOES work for some or most Windows

I think all three of the packages have later versions since you created

Can you upgrade to Gimp 2.6.1? - Following probably works with Gimp 2.2
but I don't have it anymore.

Next, I need to know how to actually implement the Onionskin feature.

I don't know anything about Onionskin (or much about GAP either) ...

I currently have a 62-frame scene that I'd like to work with. Each
frame came off the scanner as a PNM image file. I've already rotated
and cropped all the images, using ImageMagick and the bash shell
 scripting language.

Is there any way of batch coverting all the PNM
files to XFC files without opening each one of them and saving it to
an XCF file? ImageMagick's 'convert' tool doesn't recognize XCF image
 files.

In Gimp 2.6.1 (in Windows - I assume its the same in Linux) just open an
image of the same size as your PNM files. In your Explorer equivalent in
Linux select all 62 images, drag them as a group to the toolbox with the
Layers dialog shown and drop.

Result should be 63 layers (lowest the background) and above that the 62
PNM images named to match. Delete the lowest one.

From there you can (for example) save as a GIF file with 62 frames or
(I presume) do anything else you want to do with GAP-onionskin.

If you really want them saved as separate files ... this thread looks
on-point (found with Google: [gimp save layers as files]

Script:

This script was mentioned in bugzilla:

Attempts to execute it result in:

Error while executing script-fu-save-anim-layers:

I think this is due to changes in script-fu (?) but don't know enough
about script-fu to correct it. Could someone help?

the files will be created?

You didn't need to read the linked PDF file. That is there for reference in

The release notes should have made it perfectly clear as to the problem and

think about some changes to the information. In the meantime, Sven has pointed
out the needed changes to the script that were referred to in the release notes.

[Gimp-user] Windows 2.6.2 installer problem(s) - ATTN: Jernej(?)

2008-11-08 Thread Alec Burgess
I saw a request in Bugzilla that someone show output for gimp
--verbose command and being naturally curious ran it myself. (see
output below)

(1) One thing caught my attention in it:
=
(gimp-2.6.exe:4928): Gtk-WARNING **: Could not find the icon 'gtk-file'.
The 'hicolor' theme
was not found either, perhaps you need to install it.
You can get a copy from:

(gimp-2.6.exe:4928): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_icon_info_load_icon: assertion

=
checking the site referenced above I see a bunch of tar.gz files, most
recent being:
-- hicolor-icon-theme-0.10.tar.gz22-Nov-2006 04:02 33K

Question: does this indicate something that should have been done in the
build for the windows installer?

(2) Gimp internal help browser - BUMP
I asked on the dev list and never got an answer - probably because I
posted in the Announce-thread for 2.6.2
=
I'm still seeing the same Help-Internal browser problem:
The GIMP help browser plug-in appears to be missing from your
installation. You may instead use the web browser for reading the help
 pages.

I thought that this was something required some tweak to the Windows
build and was going to be fixed for 2.6.2. Did I misunderstand?
===
FWIW: Now, even when I set preferences to use online help and use web
browser its not opening in browser. (default browser Firefox-portable,
WinXP SP3)

Any suggestions?

(3) I have another question about overriding Folders-Plugins (GAP
related) I'll post in a new thread.

On closer examination I see that it is doing what it should - skipping
the GAP related plugins in:
D:\Program Files\GIMP-2.6\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\ put there by the GAP
2.4 installer and using instead the (newer) plugins gap_plugins.exe and

which I deliberately put in a separate location so I wouldn't lose them
if installing a new GIMP-2.6.x version subsequently.

However I'm still confused by: LibGimpBase-WARNING **: gimp-2.6.exe:

Does this indicate a real problem?

Googling [gimp_wire_read] I see a number of posts (apparently related to
GTK and/or Python and mostly MAC related)

Searching Bugzilla for [gimp_wire_read] I find two hits:

Both: Product: gtk+ Component: GtkFileChooser Version: 2.12.x Status:

Above are on Unix systems. I haven't seen any errors associated with

something just waiting to get triggered?

All unstable releases of GIMP (those, that have I won't bug

current 2.7.0 build - I'll provide another build soon).

The release I got was: gimp-2.7.0-r28042-i686-setup.exe from (I think):
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=121075package_id=240554

The current version of that page now shows: GIMP 2.7.0 (SVN rev.28070)
+ GTK+ 2.14.7
no setup.exe files, just three babl, gegl and gimp tar.lzma files which
I assume (?) are source files.

Am I looking in the correct place but just jumping the gun because you
haven't yet created the expected setup.exe file?
Is an RSS-feed watch on that page the correct way to find out when you
have created a new win32 build?

You should unzip the archive either to

The Publish to web item should then appear in the File menu.

Also, don't forget to reinstall GIMP after installing Python, because
 the
GIMP Python components aren't installed unless Python is present on
 the

This is a related GIMP 2.6.6 Python problem ... (using WinXP SP3)
I had GIMP 2.6.6 installed and working with Python 2.5. I ran into a
problem with a Python script by Chris Mohler
posted here a couple of days ago. Count tiles for a mosaic -
http://registry.gimp.org/node/15080

the command pdb.gimp_message() eg. pdb.gimp_message(ufoo) shows its
output in either the separate GIMP-output window if GIMP started with
parameter -c or the internal Error console instead of in the expected
dialog box.

At Chris' suggestion I checked version of Python I had. Mine was Python
2.5 and checking http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/faq.html#py found that
GIMP 2.6 is now available as are new versions of the three sub-packages
PyCairo http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/binaries/win32/pycairo/1.4/,
PyGObject
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/binaries/win32/pygobject/2.14/ and
PyGTK http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/binaries/win32/pygtk/2.12/. These
three have new versions for Python 2.6 released Jan 12, 2009

So I installed Python 2.6.6, then the three sub-packages. At first Gimp
python-console was working as before (though pdb.gimp_message()
continued not to display the expected dialog box). Then I noticed /
remembered that GIMP has to be reinstalled after installing the Python
stuff so I did that.

Now I'm getting error message in Error Console as soon as I try to open
python console Filters - Python-Fu - console:

===  GIMP Error
Plug-in crashed: python-console.py
(D:\Program
Files\GIMP-2.0\GIMP2.6.4\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\python-console.py)

The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal state. You may want
to save your images and restart GIMP to be on the safe side.

Note I tested with previously installed GIMP 2.6.5 2.7.0 - Python-Fu
still works with them (presumably still using Python 2.5) install.

Note: in an attempt to correct this, I reinstalled GIMP 2.6.6 again but
unchecked the python support option. It warned that python files would
not be removed, requested reboot and after reboot GIMP 2.6.6 still shows
Filters - Python-Fu entry. Selecting it gives error in console above.
Re-installing GIMP 2.6.6 and turning Python option on again does not
request reboot and attempt to run Python-Fu console still gives above error.

I haven't (yet) tried uninstalling Python 2.6

PS: just before sending I noticed that the error message above is
referring to GIMP2.6.4 not GIMP2.6.6 ?

I've got four installs of GIMP 2.6 in:
D:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\GIMP-2.7
D:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\GIMP2.6.3
D:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\GIMP2.6.4
D:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\GIMP2.6.5
D:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\GIMP2.6.6

I checked Help-About in all four, each shows the expected version and
all except GIMP2.6.6 show in the Python-Fu console the correct GIMP
version and Python 2.5.2( except for GIMP 2.6.6 which gives the error
message instead of displaying the Python Console): eg:

GIMP 2.6.5 Python Console
Python 2.5.2 (r252:60911, Feb 21 2008, 13:11:45) [MSC v.1310 32 bit (Intel)]

Any suggestions as to how GIMP 2.6.6 is getting to the wrong
python-console.py?

1. Drag your original layer over to the Channels Dialog and drop it,
creating a new channel.

2. Hide the channel by clicking on its eyeball icon.
3. Return to the Layers Dialog.
4. Duplicate your original layer and increase its gamma using the
Levels filter.
5. Add a layermask to the duplicate layer, initializing it to the
inverted channel produced by Step 1.

6. Add a bit of Gaussian blur to the layermask (optional).
7. Adjust the opacity of the duplicate layer to obtain desired result.

Step 4 is not necessary if you already have an overexposed version
of the original layer (created from a HDR RAW file), as was the case
in the tutorial you linked to.

Re: [Gimp-user] Masking for Contrast Control - Can this be done in Gimp?

2009-04-02 Thread Alec Burgess
Thanks Saul. (Leaving text below in case this s/b the basis for a
bugreport ...)
a) I can drag and drop in the Layers dialog - but never see the '+'-sign
in the cursor.
b) In your video (I stepped through it frame by frame so I'm pretty sure
I have this correct) as soon as you grabbed the layer and moved it up to
the channels icon to open the channels dialog the '+' sign appeared and
(I think(?)] was visible until you dropped it below the line - below
the components section - into the channels section.

When I do it (again Windows XP, same in both GIMP 2.6.6 and GIMP 2.7
r28070) the '+' sign never appears while dragging in the image dialog
and only appears when dragging in the channels dialog if I position my
cursor to the right of where a fairly short channel name would appear -
or if none yet, to the right of where it would be. (If description is 10
characters (say) background copy the + sign appears when cursor is
over the 'c' in copy or further right - otherwise it is not shown).
When '+' displayed drop will be successful otherwise it fails.
.
When I was first trying to follow your description I didn't have my
cursor far enough right and first time I managed to do it had confused
myself into thinking it was a matter of how close cursor was to the
separator line :-(

For improved discoverablity suggest that the '+' sign s/b added to
drag-drop anywhere its legal to drop and in particular only be removed
in the Channels dialog when cursor is over the components section but
reappear when cursor is *anywhere* below the line. I *think* but not
sure about this, that '+' sign should appear when cursor is over the
Channels icon allowing drop there - which should automatically drop
it in the same place that a new channel would be created if user keyed
Shift+[New] button.

can anyone confirm/refute above using Linux/Mac/Windows build?

btw: Once I got the above straight your recipe worked great on the
sample image.

Just to be clear, after the Channels Dialog is raised (this feature
thanks to Michael Natterer :) ), you must move the pointer down to the
channels section of the dialog (as opposed to the components part
at the top with the red, green, and blue components). The + symbol
should appear when the pointer is hovered in the droppable region --
if you had some channels already there then the + would only appear
when you are between channels (there would also be a horizontal line
similar to what appears when dropping layers in the Layers Dialog).

I'm using 2.6.6 on Windows XP. I tried modifier keys Shift and Ctrl and

I do not use Windows so I doubt I can be of much help. You should
check to see if you can drag-n-drop layers in the Layers Dialog to
reorder your layerstack (instead of a + symbol, you will see an
arrow because you are not copying the layer, but moving it).

You should also see if, in the Channels Dialog, you can drag one of
the components (red, green, or blue) down from the top and drop it in
the channels list. If you have problems doing either of these then it
is possibly owing to a bug in the Windows version of GIMP.

DJ: If you have lots of disk and some time you could probably get
pretty close to what you are after by mirroring the Gimp Registry

you grab them with HTTrack and then using a folder/file

HTTrack can be configured to only download changes to previous

Re: [Gimp-user] How to import Photoshop .pat files?

2009-06-02 Thread Alec Burgess
I was following along as did Akana - I found two Photoshop pattern
files one alleged to contain 162 patterns, the other 109 patterns.

Also found this plugin by Googling [use photoshop patterns in gimp]:
http://registry.gimp.org/node/10879#comment-872
I needed the windows version noted in the comments:
http://registry.gimp.org/node/11003 (by schumaml -October 30, 2008)

With the EXE dropped in my plugins folder and after restarting GIMP I
can now open the .PAT PS-pattern files by drag and drop from Windows
Explorer. They are opened as a multiple layer file (apparently one layer
per pattern).

I now need to write out all layers as individual GIMP .pat files
As an experiment I dragged one of the layers to a new image and did
[Image-Autocrop], then [Save as ...] into the Patterns folder (actually
a subfolder thereof) as testpattern.pat (it exports, requests flattening
and a name)

After refreshing Gimp patterns - the saved pattern *IS* available in the
Patterns dialog - YIPPEE!

To get them created individually it looks like [Filters-Animation-Save
Layers] does the trick. If renumbering make sure to include enough ~'s
to cover total number of pattern files being written and specify an
extension] eg:
path-to-patterns-subfolder/devart_PS_pats_~~~.pat (If insufficient
~'s in the file-spec an error is generated.
This is script-fu-save-anim-layers by Saul Goode 3/11/2008 - not sure
if it came-with GAP or I got it somewhere else?

Ok ... this sort-of worked :-(
I've now got 162 files in my sub-folder of patterns directory (each 2.0
MB) and when I do refresh in pattern dialog all these appear to be
loaded. I do get an error showing in the error console:
Failed to load data: Failed to open file 'D:\Data
Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\patterns\Photoshop patterns -
converted\ademmm.deviantart.com': Permission denied

I'm not sure whether above error really matters - I got the same error
on my manually created pattern described above ...

However ... the patterns created don't seem to be the individual layers
- they are all sized 526x1024 and contain multiple images - what you
would see if you merged visible with (I think) one fewer layers visible
each time.

Any suggestions as to how to get the job finished? ie. each layer needs
to be cropped I think.
I guess this needs a new script or tweaks to Saul Goode's
script-fu-save-anim-layers but unfortunately I have zero ability in
that area.

If I put that file in ~/.gimp-2.6/patterns/ it's ignored, and if I

Okay, done. I started with save-anim-layers, but then during the
course of simplifying it to deal only with patterns I ended up
rewriting pretty much the whole thing.

http://shallowsky.com/software/gimp/save-pat-layers.scm

works for me on Windows with both 2.6.6 and 2.7

It still registers in Animation, as Save layers as patterns.
Animation isn't the right place for it but it wasn't obvious
what would be better. Any thoughts?

Maybe both Saul's [Save layers as ...] and your [Save layers as
patterns] would be more discoverable on the layers menu?

Start with the original multi-layer image and run Animation-
Save layers as patterns, and it will save each of the layers
to your GIMP profile patterns directory with the appropriate
layer name. I've only tested it on one pattern (the animal one)
but it seems to work.

It does change the original image -- the layers stay autocropped,
I didn't bother to try to revert them since I figure most people
will just be closing that image anyway.

I'll put it on the registry after I get feedback on whether
it's working okay for anyone besides myself.

YES

I'd especially like
to hear whether it works on Windows, since it builds up paths with
/ (which I think script-fu is supposed to translate automatically).

The location is correctly created for me - GOOD!
I think some way for user to specify a tag will for all patterns created
will be useful after 2.7 gets released maybe this can be re-visited
then? (If you want to avoid requiring any user interaction perhaps the
file name?)

Note: so that I can keep track of where my special patterns came from
and so that all resources can be shared with all installed versions of
GIMP I've been putting them in sub-folders of ...\patterns.

ie. in Preferences-folders-patterns I've added:

   D:\Data Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\patterns
and as subfolders of that:

   D:\Data Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\patterns\added_manually (a
   couple I created manually)
   D:\Data Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\patterns\ademmm.deviantart
(from the PS PAT file via Akkana's script 162 *.pat files)
   D:\Data Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\patterns\squidfingers (from the
PS PAT file via Akkana's script 109 *.pat files)

@Sven ... is following a bug? @anyone ... can someone confirm on a Unix

happening on both 2.6.6 and 2.7

when I refresh patterns (in Pattern toolbox dialog) it gets done
correctly ie. reads each sub-folder of paths specified in Preferences

message like following appears in Error Console (ie. the one available
for display in the toolbox window or as a freestanding dialog)

Re: [Gimp-user] How to import Photoshop .pat files?

2009-06-03 Thread Alec Burgess

Followup re Akkana's script: a minor niggle ...

I had created this environment variable:
GIMP2_DIRECTORY=D:\Data files\gimp-2.x_resourc...@gimp_settings_all_versions
Your script is creating the patterns in that location in subfolder +
patterns ie.
D:\Data files\gimp-2.x_resourc...@gimp_settings_all_versions\patterns
but I had not changed Preferences-File folders-Patterns to point
explicitly to that location.

ie the gimprc file which gets used by GIMP at startup:
D:\Data files\gimp-2.x_resourc...@gimp_settings_all_versions\gimprc
includes these lines:

   * (pattern-path D:\\Data
 Files\\Gimp-2.x_resources\\patterns;C:\\Documents and
 Settings\\Alec\\.gimp-2.6\\patterns;D:\\Program
 Files\\GIMP-2.0\\GIMP2.6.6\\share\\gimp\\2.0\\patterns)
   * (pattern-path-writable D:\\Data
 Files\\Gimp-2.x_resources\\patterns;C:\\Documents and
 Settings\\Alec\\.gimp-2.6\\patterns)

The point is that in your script you concatenate /patterns to contents
of GIMP2_DIRECTORY with (I think) the line
(path (string-append gimp-directory /patterns/)) but in fact that
location does *NOT* automatically get used by GIMP-internals to find
location of patterns.

Note that in the gimprc extract above (originally created by the
installer I guess) it still points to: C:\\Documents and
Settings\\Alec\\.gimp-2.6\\patterns which for MOST users who have not
set GIMP2_DIRECTORY would be where (path (string-append gimp-directory
/patterns/)) points.

I'm not sure whether there is a way for script-fu to get the contents of
the gimprc(?) - technically I think it ought to offer the user a
chance to select in which of the authorized writable folders (or
possibly in a user specified sub-folder thereof) it will create the
patterns.

  I'd especially like
to hear whether it works on Windows, since it builds up paths with
/ (which I think script-fu is supposed to translate
 automatically).
The location is correctly created for me - GOOD!
I think some way for user to specify a tag will for all patterns
created will be useful after 2.7 gets released maybe this can be
re-visited then? (If you want to avoid requiring any user interaction
 perhaps the file name?)

Note: so that I can keep track of where my special patterns came
from and so that all resources can be shared with all installed
versions of GIMP I've been putting them in sub-folders of
 ...\patterns.
 ie. in Preferences-folders-patterns I've added:

   D:\Data Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\patterns
and as subfolders of that:

   D:\Data Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\patterns\added_manually (a
   couple I created manually)
   D:\Data Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\patterns\ademmm.deviantart
(from the PS PAT file via Akkana's script 162 *.pat files)
   D:\Data Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\patterns\squidfingers (from
 the
PS PAT file via Akkana's script 109 *.pat files)

I had a look at at http://carol.gimp.org/gimp/scripting/ and found
the python-fu-batch-resize interesting. but how do I make it work for
gimp2.6 in windows (XP sp3)? - sofar this is the only .py file I have
 - there is no folder Xtns and no such menu item. It should install
as python_fu_batch_resize in Toolbox/Xtns/Batch/Resize so where
do i put the file and to a start it from within gimp 2.6?

Googling [gimp python windows 2.6] gets a number of hits.
This looks like a pretty good one:

Re: [Gimp-user] HOWTO: stroke a path with the current tool?

Your script would have to manually traverse the paths. I have written

a Script-fu which does this for Fuzzy selections; the command is

added to the context menu raised by right-clicking on a path in the

Paths Dialog. The script can be retrieved from

http://flashingtwelve.brickfilms.com/GIMP/Scripts/Temp/sg-fuzzy-select-along-path.scm

Saul - interesting script but it seems to take a very long time.
Just to see what the difference it would make, I drew an arbitrary path
through an image and ran your script against it, copied the selected
region and pasted it to a new layer ... then on the same path, using
fuzzy select tool (with same parameters) with Shift key down (additive
select) clicked manually along the path where by eye I detected changing
colors and again copied resulting selection to a new layer ... then set
difference mode to compare what had been selected by your script vs what
I had selected manually.

two layers were almost identical but manual took a fraction of the time.
Next tried a complex path (the result of a Fuzzy Select Tool followed by
selection to path). This took a **very** long time and eventually
stalled - per Process Explorer GIMP was consuming 1.25 GB of memory :-(

Suggestion: Would it be possible as you walk the path, to compare each
pixel to prior and if they are the same to within the threshold
tolerance skip that pixel and proceed to next? My theory being that if
two adjacent pixels on a path are within threshold tolerance of each
other then fuzzy select on either is the same as fuzzy select on both.

Re: [Gimp-user] Color Selection with color to alpha

Well, I am new at this. Not even sure if what I am attempting is

Color-to-alpha only applies to the selection, so you can restrict its
effects by doing a selection first. For instance to remove a background,
use the wand to get a rough selection of the background, grow the
selection by a couple of pixels so that it includes the edges of the
 foreground, and perform color-to-alpha.
I tried doing a selection but since both colors are similar it selects all.
Changed selection thresholds and it still doesn't work. Here is what I am

 change:http://www.weddingclipart.com/wca/edittemplate.do?template=218069

I am trying to change the colors of the scrolls on the wedding invitation.
The dark blue into a red, the lighter into a black. Yet I can't seem to get
it to work flawlessly. Please help. thanks
I got pretty good results by first selecting white, cutting that,
pasting to a new layer, then selecting the light-blue, cutting that and
pasting to a new layer and finally selecting dark-blue, cutting and
pasting to new layer.
see http://screencast.com/t/jb44OAkIOywh

It could probably be done with fewer layers than I used
