Well, those are my idea. But I'm sure that there must be better ways of
doing this.

I don't know what that is. It might be the at daemon failing to start,
but that has nothing to do with printing.

Can you be more specific? You haven't given us a lot to go on.

far better than mine (using gphoto) for the creation
of thumbnails.
You may still find ghoto useful for creating web galleries if you don't
wish to write a script yourself, in which case it will do the thumbnails
for you. But just as a way to get thumbnails, gphoto is overkill.

gital camaras, but will also work with them out of a directory on
the file system. So I use the GIMP to touch up my photos, put those ready
for the web in a directory and then use gphoto to get a gallery with
thumbnails.

Of course, if you are not trying to feather to transparency, then this is
all moot advice.

All of this is wild guesses. I've never even thought about looking at
the source code for any of these tools, and certainly have no knowledge of

;ve been doing is creating a new layer. Pasting, and then
anchoring. If there is a one step "past onto new layer" that would be
nice. I guess my intuition about what pasting has conflicted with what
GIMP actually does.

some of the things are resolved now
that I've learned a bit more how to use the layers & channels window.
(one problem is that I had selected something, pasted it on to a new
layer, but couldn't actually do anything in the layers window until I had
"anchored" what I
er tool? If so, what? (It must run on Linux, and
I prefer GPL'ed)
Can someone point me to something to get me started? I seem to be able to
make selections ok, but I can't seem to manuplate the selections usefully.
There must be some guide or help for people in my position.
