Re: [Gimp-user] Updates on MacOS - Fake?

2020-07-31 Thread Maurizio Loreti via gimp-user-list
I know you hate me when I ask about GIMP releases for MacOS; but I use GIMP
for my photo editing, and I (without any offense) MUST know if I can rely
on GIMP for that, or if I have to switch to another software: Photoshop,
Luminar, ON1, whatever. Please, state clearly if GIMP is supported on
MacOS: if yes, I will wait; if no, I will start searching for
alternatives. And, do not say "wait a couple of days" if you are not sure
about that, Mr. Bagchi.

Suggestion: what about saying plainly on your web page "GIMP is not
supported on Mac OS X", if that is the case?

Again, no offense intended. Just to be clear.

[Gimp-user] MacOS

2020-04-24 Thread Maurizio Loreti via gimp-user-list
Any foresight for an implementation of GIMP 2.10.18 for MacOS? [I mean
official, not MacPorts (that uses XQuartz) nor Partha's].

If GIMP has problems with MacOS, what are these problems?

[Gimp-user] 30 days ago ...

2020-03-22 Thread Maurizio Loreti via gimp-user-list
30 days ago GIMP 2.10.18 has been released for GNU/Linux and Windows. And,
after a whole month, has not been released for MacOS, a platform used by
several professional photographers, and where 2.10.14 only is available for
download.

I would like to know if there are still plans to support MacOS, and when the
MacOS distribution will be available.

I know about Partha’s package; but I just would like to know if the official
GIMP team plans to drop the MacOS support, or if it is still alive.

Thank you in advance, M.

Re: [Gimp-user] Can't install on OS Catalina

2019-10-15 Thread Maurizio Loreti via gimp-user-list
And, for what concerns the issue "dragging the GIMP icon to the Applications
directory", just dragging under MacOS on the same volume creates in
Applications a soft link to the executable. If you want *move* the whole
executable to Applications, use Command-Drag instead.

Re: [Gimp-user] Can't install on OS Catalina

2019-10-15 Thread Maurizio Loreti via gimp-user-list
Yes. Open GIMP; also if you cannot access e.g. Desktop files with the File →
Open dialog, you can drag a Desktop file icon to the GIMP window to open it.

This is a fault of the GIMP (GTK?) File → Open dialog; in MacOS, if you try to
access a “protected" directory (Downloads, Documents, Desktop, …) a requester
*should* *open*, asking if you want to give your program full disk access, and
transferring you to System Preferences → Security & Privacy when answering
“OK”. Please, change this behaviour.

Again - I want to clarify a little bit more.

It seems that www.gimp.org <http://www.gimp.org/> is the definitive reference
for GIMP, and I assume that the OS X release I got from there is the official
release.

I don’t like Macports’ GIMP, because (at least the last time I checked) does
not use the native OS X graphics but X11/Xquartz.

Running autogen.sh on the resynthesizer distribution src directory gives:

> configure: error: GIMP development libraries not found; please install.

How can I find/compile the plug-in for OS X 10.14.5? *please*.

Hello -
I installed gimp 2.10.0 on my iMac; and edited the related gimprc inserting the
two lines

(default-snap-to-grid no)
(default-snap-to-canvas yes)

But these lines have no effect in 2.10 (but worked in 2.8). What did I miss?
Where may I find the commands allowed in gimprc?

The GIMP community does not seem to care about OS X. But a version for OS X is
available via MacPorts (www.macports.org). IMHO, wait until 2.10.2 will be

Hello -
I am a satisfied Mac user and an avid photographer; I use for the
post-production of my pictures GIMP, namely the distribution (released by
Simone Karin Lehmann) "GIMP on OS X", available under the URL
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimponosx . This distribution comes with a
pre-compiled gimp-ufraw plugin; loading a RAW picture in GIMP is handled in
this way. However "GIMP on OS X" lacks a standalone ufraw and ufraw-batch.
Needing for my RAW pictures ufraw-batch, I compiled ufraw and ufraw-batch from
the source code; however this is not completely described in the ufraw
documentation. Here is what I did.

For the compiler, you need to install Xcode (from the Apple Store, free) and
the Xcode command line tools; how to do that is described in a lot of places,
Google will help.

For the libraries, I have installed the ones supplied by the Macports projects:

  +--+--+-+
  | | Package | Version |
  +--+--+-+
  | LCMS | lcms2| 2.8 |
  | EXIV2| exiv2| 0.25|
  | JPEG | jpeg | 9b |
  | JPEG2000 | openjpeg | 2.1.2 |
  | TIFF | tiff | 4.0.7 |
  | PNG | libpng | 1.6.28 |
  | ZIP | zip | 3.00|
  | BZIP2| bzip2| 1.0.6 |
  | LENSFUN | lensfun | 0.3.2 |
  | CFITSIO | cfitsio | 3.390 |
  | GTKIMAGEVIEW | gtkimageview | 1.6.4 |
  +--+--+-+

How to install them is described in the Macports home page,
http://www.macports.org .

The Macports libraries are compiled with clang and clang++ as C and C++
compilers; while clang and gcc are fully compatible, and their object files
linkable together, clang++ and g++ use different name mangling schemes; so, if
you want e.g. exiv2 support (exiv2 is a C++ package) you need to change the
default compilers. So, finally, I unpacked, configured, compiled and installed
ufraw/ufraw-batch with the following commands:

tar xzf ufraw-0.22.tar.gz
cd ufraw-0.22/
CC=clang CXX=clang++ CPPFLAGS=-I/opt/local/include \
LDFLAGS=-L/opt/local/lib \
./configure --prefix=/opt/local/share/ufraw-0.22
make
sudo make install
sudo ln -s /opt/local/share/ufraw-0.22 /opt/local/share/ufraw
ln -s /opt/local/share/ufraw/bin/ufraw ~/Applications/ufraw
ln -s /opt/local/share/ufraw/bin/ufraw-batch ~/Applications/ufraw-batch
ln -s /opt/local/share/ufraw/share/man/man1/ufraw.1 ~/man/man1/ufraw.1

Notes:
- Macports include files are in /opt/local/include .
- Macports libraries are in /opt/local/lib .
- I installed ufraw in /opt/local/share/ufraw-0.22 , a directory soft-linked to
/opt/local/share/ufraw ; when a new release will
come, say 0.xy, it will be enough to install it in
/opt/local/share/ufraw-0.xy and, then, change the soft link.
- The executables ufraw and ufraw-batch are soft-linked to ~/Applications,
where OS X expects to find user executables.
- I have created ~/man/... for personal man files, and linked there ufraw.1, in
order to have the output of "man ufraw".

[Gimp-user] gimp-drawable-curves-spline

OK - well, my scheme knowledge is not enough :-(Here is the relevant
section of the code:

   (define (spline)
 (let* ((a (cons-array 8 'byte)))
   (set-pt a 0 0 0)
   (set-pt a 1 63 60)
   (set-pt a 2 191 194)
   (set-pt a 3 255 255)
   a))
   (define (set-pt a index x y)
   (prog1
   (aset a (* index 2) x)
   (aset a (+ (* index 2) 1) y)))
   (gimp-curves-spline inDrw 0 8 (spline))

Just changing the procedure name in the last line to
gimp-drawable-curves-spline is not enough. If I understand correctly, the
program allocates an array of 8 bytes where 8 integer values (0,0; 63,60;
191,194; 155.255) are stored. The memory to be allocated should be adequate
for 8 floating point values (8 * 32 bytes?), and the values stored there. Is
set-pt adequate? Or intended for integer values only? May somebody help me?

[Gimp-user] gimp-drawable-curves-spline

2016-02-24 Thread Maurizio Loreti
Hello -
I am using GIMP 2.9.3 from Partha’s Place, on a Mac running OS X; from time to
time I use a scheme plugin found in the gimpfx-foundry distribution
(http://gimpfx-foundry.sourceforge.net) called "salonen-vivid-saturation.scm”.
And, yes, I understand that gimpfx-foundry is unmaintained since ?2008? -
however that scheme procedure has always worked well for me up to GIMP 2.8.

With GIMP 2.9 I get al alert saying that gimp-curves-spline (called from line
63 in the .scm procedure) is obsolete, and replaced now by
gimp-drawable-curves-spline. The procedure however works; but I know some
scheme and I would like to edit the .scm file in order to call
gimp-drawable-curves-spline - but I cannot find on the Internet the synopsis
for that new function.

The synopsis for the old one is: gimp-curves-spline (drawable, channel,
num_points, control_pts)

Can some kind soul tell me how gimp-drawable-curves-spline must be called?

[Gimp-user] ufraw/lensfun

2014-07-10 Thread Maurizio Loreti
Hello, list -
I am a satisfied GIMP user, and I am using the skl's Mac on OS X 2.8.10p2
release running under OS X 10.9.4.

I have problems with the lensfun corrections to my photo pictures; I am not
sure if this is related to GIMP itself, or to the Mac port I am using.

What happens is:

if I open a Canon RAW image (a CR2 file), GIMP recalls the ufraw plugin
window; in the third tab (Lens Correction), ufraw does not know my camera
Canon 6D, nor my other camera Canon Powershot G15, nor my lens Canon 24-70 EF L
II (note the II), nor other lenses I have.
If I open a Canon JPG image, the plugin GIMP-Lensfun v0.2.3 (Filters - Enhance
- GIMP-Lensfun, inserted I think in the distribution by skl) does not know the
same cameras and objectives.

The lensfun correction files are shipped by skl in the directory
/Applications/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/share/lensfun/ , and are named
compact-canon.xml and slr-canon.xml.

I have tried do download the last versions from the lensfun distribution, now
hosted on sourceforge; under the URL
http://sourceforge.net/p/lensfun/code/ci/master/tree/data/db/ there are three
files canon-related, named compact-canon.xml, slr-canon.xml and mil-canon.xml.
Just copying the first two files, or all three, on my GIMP tree, makes GIMP
choke on the format of these files - both for RAW images and for JPG images;
probably the xml file format has changed with the time.

QUESTION: how can I upgrade GIMP so that it will use modern and complete
lensfun files?

*As I said*, replacing these files don't work; their xml format is
different.

If I replace the files, there will be no diagnostic in the terminal where I
start GIMP; but there will be NO Canon cameras and NO Canon objectives at
all available for ufraw into GIMP.

Copying the same new files in the ufraw tree makes ufraw barf with the
diagnostic /opt/local/share/lensfun/compact-canon.xml:22:61: Unknown
element html! and several others similar. Yes, I could edit the
current files adding the relevant information, but if the lensfun file
format has changed this 1) requires actions from the ufraw and the GIMP
team; and 2) for me, merging the information from the new files into the
old ones, if they obey a different syntax, could be a nightmare.

About that you are right; I got the files using a wget
http://URL/slr-canon.xml; and wget got all the data of the code frame. My
fault.

HOWEVER, downloading the files correctly, GIMP and ufraw both barf again;
the first line reads lensdatabase version=1 and is not accepted: the
old files begin with a plain lensdatabase. See, when you say

 err, xml = xm

you are not right: the _format_ of the xml file has changed, indeed, as I
said. But the change now is straightforward.

IMHO, the best candidate for these repetitive jobs is ImageMagick - as
suggested before by ofnuts. Or with a shell script invoking convert (as
shown in the example) or (if you have some programming experience) with a
simple C program using the Magick shared library. In this way i wrote a
simple program to resize images, adjusting the quality in order to generate
a file not bigger than a specified limit.

  $ ./call-gimp-function script.scm (simple-unsharp-mask \file.png\ 5.0
 0.5 0)

 Thanks for your suggestion, Jehan!

In fact, that's what I'm currently doing. But I thought there must be a
 better
way, since this is very prone to quoting errors. I got hidden badly when I
tried to pass a color definition as a quoted scheme list =:8O

I think it should work well even if there are double quotes in the
definition script because I think cat escapes them before feeding the
  contents to the main command.

I'd rather redirect stdin instead of using cat.

PS: where can I find information about how to access operating system
 (files,
directories, environment, etc) from script-fu? I've been searching for
TinyScheme ducumentation but could not find anyting. There seems to be
something like txn extensions and re extensions. But they don't seem to be
 available from script-fu? Any hints?

Re: [Gimp-user] Background color

2013-06-08 Thread Maurizio Loreti
This works for me (GIMP 2.8.4):
Menu windows - dockable dialogs - colors; select a yellow foreground color
File - new; choose correct x-y values; Advanced options: Fill with -
foreground color

OR:
Fuzzy select color tool; left click on the background to select it
Bucket fill tool; in the tool options: check fill with foreground color;
check fill whole selection
Left-lick

I am trying to get the white background changed to yellow to match the web
page. I have followed the instructions in the GIMP manual for bucket fill,
Foreground Select Tool, editfill with fg or bg color. Nothing works. The
only color I can get is black when the fg/bg option is black. In the
toolbox I have changed both fg and bg to yellow. Still no change. I would
like to change a new canvas to the yellow bg color and then copy and paste
my image onto it. How can I do this?
 Thanks, Gary

[Gimp-user] GIMP does not support Mac Retina displays

2013-05-20 Thread Maurizio Loreti
Hello - I am an amateur photographer, satisfied user of GIMP on Mac computers;
an iMac 27 at home and a Macbook Pro with 15 Retina displays, that I use on
the road. GIMP does not support my Retina high resolution display; window
graphics and text appear jagged, and, while displaying the same picture on the
iMac and the Macbook, the Retina picture appears to be lower quality.

It is a pity that this wonderful program, ported to the Mac with native
graphics, does not support these displays.

This is of course a request for an enhancement; will you plan to support high
resolution displays in the near future?

The Retina display problem is already known and there are two bugs in
 our Bugtracker for this:

Bug 682178-Offscreen windows render into low-resolution pixel space [1],
Bug 686454-Gimp Canvas Content Looks Distorted and Pixelated on Macbook
 Pro Retina [2].
 [...]

The current state of development as I heard on IRC: one developer
already made bugfixes but found nobody with a Retina display to
test it. Perhaps we can create a new temporary development branch
in our Git repository for these bugfixes, get an OS X build from it
and somebody with a Retina display is willing to test (perhaps you?).

No problem, provided that 1) my GIMP on OS X installation, from the
distribution built by Simone Karin Lehman is not affected, i.e. if I can
install this
test executable in a directory different from /Applications; and 2) my
personal
scripts, fonts, plugins, ... under ~/Library/Application
Support/GIMP/2.8/ are not
affected. OK, I could backup the whole stuff, but... And, well, in about
ten
days I am planning to leave from home for a short trip in camping car wit
limited/no web access...
