it most definitely did, and this behaviour was what i fancied to call a
combination of postinstall-scripts and automake. your proposed macro-
name %{_mandir} would be the convenient interface. how else but with
some sort of automake functionality could it be possible to have packages
built on different hosts to be installed on a host which has already
installed packages with different directory-structures.

we can't even blame anybody, as we might want to install to a variety of
ever-changing places matching the sites evolution. softlinks don't
solve every problem.

No, what I was thinking of, was it would be nice to be able to install a
file in %{_mandir}, and that %{_mandir} would be expanded when the file is
installed. Currently %{_mandir} may expand to /usr/man or /usr/share/man,
depending on the distribution and version/release of RPM installed. Now, if
%{_mandir} wouldn't expand at build time to, say, /usr/share/man,
distributions where man's are still installed in the FHS violating location
of /usr/man would still be fine.

Did this make any sense to you?

what do you mean by an install time macro? rpm's, but also tgz and the
debian packager specify postinstall-scripts. you want propably a com-
bination of this and automake?

In short form:

./configure --host=linux

In fuller form:
The instructions I referred to are now at

http://www.sderby.lug.org.uk/reviews/gimp/gimprev.html
They weren't meant to solve your perl problems though as they are intended as a
quick and simple way of installing the gimp for new users, ie: perl is
disabled.

On Sun, 06 Aug 2000, you wrote:

The problem here would seem to be the mandrake rpm files (I'm assuming you are
using mandrake) and it looks as if the people who packed the rpm's were/are
using a slightly different version of perl to the one you have. This is likely
to be outdated by now and (I'm guessing you picked them up at the developer
site) no longer available for download. This is a serious shortfall on use of
rpm's for the end product package (ie the gimp) as compared to use of rpm's for
updating base product packages (ie libs) where they tend to be less dependent
on very minor revisions..

again probably due to different rpm packers using a different setup on their
individual machines. (check the name of the packer if you use krpm manager)

So either --disable-perl or if you really want the perl enabled, get the
version of perl. If I remember correctly mandrake 7.0 comes with
site_perl-5.004 but if you fetch mandrake rpm updates they will install
ALONGSIDE your old site_perl not replacing it, at least, when I fetched 5.6 they
did. hence my question on the list about where the references are in the config
files.

Re: GIMP v1.1.24 RPM Take 2

2000-08-07 Thread Andrew J Fortune

Dom,

I couldn't find your instructions. In any event, I re-tried compiling from a
sub-directory under my root directory, and got the following error during
./configure :

 loading cache ./config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
 checking for working aclocal... found
 checking for working autoconf... found
 checking for working automake... found
 checking for working autoheader... found
 checking for working makeinfo... found
checking host system type... configure: error: can not guess host type; you
must specify one
 [root@localhost gimp-1.1.24]#

I scoured the newsgroups for a solution to this error. The general concensus
was that you need to have automake, autoconf and make installed. The problem
in my case is that I already have these packages installed, but this message
still comes up.

regards,
Andrew

That's true, I used to have a redhat and a suse machine and couldn't use the

And that's why an install time macro would be so handy. If this would be
used, it wouldn't so much matter where the distributor of the RPM places
binaries.

Isn't this mostly differences in a given distribution's choices about file
locations? For example, SuSE puts binaries for X in /usr/bin/X11. RPMs I've used to
upgrade apps keep putting X binaries in /usr/bin. (Is that the Red Hat standard?)

Sorry I cannot point directly as the site is being re-mapped.

..if you want the bells and whistles (ie nice correlation between menus
and icons), sure. if you want revisions that work, then maybe best to move
to standard RPMs :-)

anyway, i think I've already covered the PERL problem by mentioning 5.6.0
(not sure what RPM flavours that comes in thoughI just get the .tar.gz
and compile is from source (far less hassle since I have to place such
things on solaris, Unix, Linux, etc) - AND i get to easily choose where

No, that was not what I meant. Mandrake RPMs are about all compiled with the
same settings, use a standard way to update menus for GNOME or KDE and store
files like manpages in the same location (/usr/share/man/*). So, if you're
using a Mandrake distribution, it is best to stay with Mandrake RPMs to make
sure that the package you are using is really optimized in compilation and
normal use on Mandrake.

'specialised' and 'conventions' spell proprietary in my book.

whats wrong with the 'open' RPM standard embraced by the tools already on
most Linux, Solaris, Un8X systems?

best avoid those 'special blands' and keep with the pure. otherwise your
only answer is get the tar.gz and then ./configure and make ...and pray

mdk rpms are specialized RPMs that conform to the Mandrake RPM conventions.

because you've chosen a non-standard PERL distribution. get 5.6.0 for the
latest up-to-date PERL.

you might fare better with removing a package instead of upgrading it.

rpm -evh perl

PS what are these 'mdk' RPM's you're messing your system up with?

Uninstall the other programs first, or do
rpm -ivh foo-bar.rpm --force

GIMP v1.1.24 RPM Take 2

2000-08-05 Thread Andrew J Fortune

All,

Following up on a previous posting, I am still trying to install GIMP
v1.1.24 with the perl plug-ins. As previously mentioned, I tried to compile
the source without any measure of success whatsoever - so I am trying the
approach of installing an RPM.

So, I have located an RPM which contains the perl plug-ins (I downloaded
about three different GIMP v1.1.24 RPM packages, and I noted with interest
that they don't all have the same files - some are missing the perl
components).

However, I am still having problems (mainly it seems I am unable to upgrade
gtk and perl due to dependencies) and was wondering if I could get some help
to resolve this.

(1) When I attempted to install from this RPM (rpm -ivh
gimp-1.1.24-2.i686.rpm), I got the following errors :

"error: failed dependencies:
 perl = 5.005_03 is needed by gimp-1.1.24-2
 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005/i686-pld-linux-thread is needed by
gimp-1.1.24-2
 gtk+ >= 1.2.8 is needed by gimp-1.1.24-2
 perl(Carp) is needed by gimp-1.1.24-2
 perl(DynaLoader) is needed by gimp-1.1.24-2
 perl(Exporter) is needed by gimp-1.1.24-2"
 (etc.).

(2) So, then I downloaded an RPM for gtk-1.2.8 and attempted to upgrade as
follows (rpm -Uvh gtk-1.2.8-24.i386.rpm), but got a long string of errors
similar to the following :

"file /usr/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES/gtk+.mo from install of gtk-1.2.8-24
conflicts with file from package gtk+-1.2.6-6mdk"

Note that I was unable to simply uninstall gtk-1.2.6 - when I did this it
gave me a long list of programs (dependencies) which required GTK.

(3) Finally, I downloaded a perl RPM package, and tried to updgrade it
(rpm -Uvh perl-5.005_03-172.i386.rpm), and got errors like the following :

"package perl-5.00503-10mdk (which is newer then perl-5.005_03-172) is
already installed
file /usr/bin/perl from install of perl-5.005_03-172 conflicts with file
from package perl-base-5.00503-10mdk..."

If this is already installed why was I getting all of those perl-related
dependency errors when installing GIMP ?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew
