*FR. BISMARQUE’S BODY -*
*A CHILLING REMINDER*

*ELVIDIO MIRANDA*

While writing these disturbing few lines on 11th October, 2016 late
evening, the sky was crying and the streets were full of tears, even bolts
of lightning and thunder could be heard and felt, probably the last rains
were bidding goodbye to the monsoons. Then there was complete silence. But
a stark reminder, recalled that Fr. Bismarque, a true champion of the
preservation of Goa’s environment has still not got his last goodbye.
The chilling fact is that while his body remains in the morgue, his
murderers are free though not at peace and the people of Goa should
consider this tragedy as a clarion call for defeating the forces that
silenced our guardian, mentor, foot soldier and custodian, that made him
the sacrificial lamb and extinguish those politicians’ smouldering fires
that should be doused so as to make his noble soul shine through the dark
firmament of environmental degradation, that Fr. Bismarque gave his life
for, to save Goa from.
The people of Goa should not be idle by-standers but act by casting their
votes against the corrupt politicians who colluded with law-enforcing
agencies to deceive Goans into thinking that he died of unforced drowning.
Let every true Goan show his and her worth by voting out the politicians
who ignored seeking justice for Fr. Bismarque and his family. May Fr.
Bismarque’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Those of you who have been following US politics long enough might remember
that Bill Clinton was touted as the first black President of the USA. Among
the less flattering reasons was that Bill and his family had lived in govt
provided housing for most of their lives.

After watching Donald J. Trump's debate performance tonight, I am convinced
that he will be the first Goan President of the USA.

Here are my reasons why:

1) When arguing, in true Goan form he skips the facts and hurls insults at
anyone opposing him.

2) He is a landlord with a loong memory

3) He has an aversion to paying taxes.

4) He donates to religious institutions.

5) Anyone who follows the law is immediately labeled as a ghanti and not a
proper Goan/USAn.

6) He wants to build a wall to keep people from entering his domain.

7) He has the support of all the voters who only have basic education.

8) He is the family values candidate.

9) He likes going for beauty competitions.

10) He made it clear that if he did not get the Party ticket, he would take
all his supporters and form his own party.

Re: [Goanet] Offtipic: All six of America’s 2016 Nobel Prize winners are immigrants

2016-10-12 Thread Jim Fernandes

Albert,

There must be something great about the US that attracts smart people.
Congratulations to the Nobel prize winners.

There is nothing awkward about welcoming 'Productive' immigrants.

I am a productive immigrant from Goa to the US and America has no issues
welcoming folks like me. I have never taken any aid - whether from Federal or
State governments wherever I resided in my 23 years of living in the US. I have
paid taxes in every year that I lived in this country and I feel good about it.

You may be confusing the good immigrants with the bad - The problem is when you
have blood suckers sucking the resources (by way of dole, free housing, free
medical benefits etc ) by the millions, the system undergoes financial strain.

This is not some bad dream - this is real!

Cheers,

Jim Fernandes

[Goanet] RIBANDAR CREMATORIUM: GHRC ADJOURNS HEARING TO 3rd NOVEMBER

2016-10-12 Thread Aires Rodrigues
With the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) seeking time to file its
reply, the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) comprising of Retired
District Judge A.D.Salkar and Mr.J.A Keny has adjourned to 3rd November the
hearing on the complaint filed over the lack of a proper crematorium for
the residents of Fonduvem in Ribandar. The Director of Municipal
Administration has informed the GHRC that it has sought the comments of the
CCP on the issue.

The GHRC last month issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Director of
Municipal Administration and Commissioner of Corporation of City of Panaji
after it was pointed out that for the Fonduvem ward at Ribandar the ‘Shree
Pandurang Devasthan’ has been struggling over the last few decades to get a
appropriate Crematorium.

The authorities have miserably failed to ensure that the 100 odd households
in the locality are bestowed a proper crematorium for their final rites.
The authorities need to explain as to how they have in violation of the
Human Rights of the 100 odd families of Fonduvem ward at Ribandar failed to
provide a proper crematorium.

The police have arrested a suspect who has "confessed" to rape and murder.
In Goa this has to be taken with great suspicion.

He was caught from CCTV footage withdrawing money (Rs 50,000) from the
victim's account with her ATM card.

How did he have her PIN?

"Singh was fascinated with Ghurde since the time they first spoke". See?
This "hassi to phasi" mentality of Indians needs to change. People from
villages and even cities in India think that if a woman talks to them or
smiles while talking, they have given the green signal for mating. Idiots
!!! Poor woman, Monica Gurde, the guy in the guise of 'security officer'
forced himself in to the apartment, threatened her under the knife point he
and committed calculated horrific crime and he was well aware how to get
her ATM PIN Number apart from cash from her purse and that she had a
pass-code for her cell phone. He should be publicly hanged. RIP Gurde.

Stop accreditation of PTI Journalist accused of Sexual Harassment
To: Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi

Stop accreditation of PTI Journalist , Rupesh Samant accused of Sexual
Harassment. He was arrested and is currently facing investigation and
judicial proceedings for multiple crimes of sexual harassment . Giving him
accreditation will be in danger of violating Constitutional values and the
rule of law . Given Samant's dubious employment history with PTI, granting
him accreditation could amount to violation of the Central News Media
Accreditation Guidelines , whereby only full time bonafide correspondents
 can obtain accreditation.

This is indeed true and some of my Uncle's friends were among the
unfortunate victims.
What I forgot to mention in my article is how some of the local Africans
were
given guns and 'forced' to kill. I remember how my Uncle's houseboy never
turned up
for 3 days after the revolution. When he eventually did, he appeared in a
'drugged-like'
state. When I questioned him, he said that he had been ordered to take part
in several killings
and as proof, showed us some of the l gold ornaments he had snatched from
his victims. He seemed
quite incapable of working as he previously did and fell into a deep sleep
off and on. When
questioned, he said he had not slept for days.

[Goanet] Goan institutions in Kenya

2016-10-12 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Just curious to know -- are there any Goan institutions still
active/existing in Kenya? The only two one can find links to online are:

The Nairobi Institute, Kenya (on Juja Road)
P.O.Box 40197
Nairobi, Kenya

The Goan Gymkhana
P.O.Box 41910
Nairobi, Kenya.

Google has some link to the former [http://bit.ly/NairobiInst] but there
are no details or photos linking there.

The Kenya Buzz has some link to the Railway Goan Institute at Parklands [
https://www.kenyabuzz.com/biz-directory/goan-institute] but it's not clear
if that is a past description or present.

Are there any other Goan institutions or links in that part of the world? FN

[Goanet] Cyril Almeida's Principled Patriotism

2016-10-12 Thread V M
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Cyril-Almeidas-principled-patriotism/articleshow/54819808.cms

Global attention pivoted to Cyril Almeida in Pakistan this week,
immediately after the acclaimed journalist and assistant editor of
Dawn newspaper (founded byMohammad Ali Jinnah in 1941) published his
explosive scoop about “an extraordinary verbal confrontation” between
civilian and military authorities. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s
office complained the story “risked vital state interests,”
threatening “stern action.” Almeida found himself on the “exit
control” list denying international travel. Then he tweeted,
“concerned, possibly convinced, more than 24 hrs after the travel ban
was imposed that govt is planning to take further, uglier actions.”

Amesty International promptly declared “Pakistan’s authorities must
immediately revoke a travel ban on a leading journalist and allow the
media to operate freely and without fear.” The human rights watchdog’s
Audrey Gaghran said “the travel ban on Cyril Almeida is a crude
intimidation tactic designed to silence journalists and stop them from
doing their jobs…the language used by the Prime Minister’s Office is
chilling. It is one thing for the authorities to dispute and
contradict a media report. But it is quite another to threaten a
journalist under the guise of national security.”

The response of Almeida’s closest colleagues bears close attention for
its stark contrast to consistently craven capitulation that has become
the rule for Indian media. Dawn reaffirmed it “handled the story in a
professional manner and carried it only after verification from
multiple sources” then added, “journalism has a long and glorious
tradition of keeping its promise to its audience even in the face of
enormous pressure brought to bear upon it from the corridors of power.
Time has proved this to be the correct stance. Some of the most
contentious yet historically significant stories have been told by
news organisations while resisting the state’s narrow, self-serving
and ever-shifting definition of ‘national interest’.”

Lahore’s The Nation newspaper went further, “a denial, perhaps even
three, were expected. What was not expected – possibly because the
government was incorrectly credited with better judgement – was a
witch-hunt. If the government and military top brass were affronted by
the implication in the report that Pakistan was facing growing
international isolation, they can now congratulate themselves on a
coup de grace that unreservedly confirms this fact…how dare the
government and military top brass lecture the press on how to do their
job. How dare they treat a feted reporter like a criminal. And how
dare they imply that they have either the right or the ability or the
monopoly to declare what Pakistan’s “national interest” is.”

On stage at the Goa Arts and Literature Festival, where Almeida (who
has distant ancestral roots in the state) starred in 2012, 2014 and
2015, the former lawyer and Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University,
persistently made an eloquent case for liberal Pakistani nationalism,
precisely in the mould of the original vision of that country’s “Quaid
e Azam” and primary architect, Mohammad Ali Jinnah. These sessions
left no doubt about his sincere patriotism, in the purest and most
enlightened sense of the term. To audiences here, it was clearly
apparent Cyril Almeida is a national treasure for Pakistan, possessed
of a calibre any country in the world would be privileged to call its
own.

It is characteristic of the weakest, most insecure polities to be
threatened by citizens who love their country with the clearest, least
biased eyes. Almeida himself says, “I don’t write for the sake of
addressing the subjects of my pieces, I write for the readers – people
like myself who are just interested in knowing what’s going on, with
no hidden agendas, no personal favourites, who don’t see too much evil
or too much good in any situation or person or institution.” These
original, best ethics of principled journalism are rarely perceived in
contemporary practitioners, which makes it bleak irony to witness the
pillorying and bullying of Almeida for simply doing his job very well.

There is much gleeful hooting in India about this crisis, as though it
erases its own extensive litany of restrictions, flagrant censorship
and rights violations. Tribal rights campaigner Gladson Dungdung and
Greenpeace’s Priya Pillai have been forced off international flights,
grounded in identical predicaments to Almeida. The Kashmir Reader
newspaper remains banned, about which the Editor’s Guild of India
finally responded “any move to obstruct, infringe or impose a ban on
the press is an assault on democracy itself” but then speedily
switched to lecturing about “fairness and balance.” Mostly, silence
and apathy reigns. It is a thoroughly pitiful track record even -
perhaps especially - when compared to Pakistan.

MD,
CNN has yet to endorsed Donald J. Trump. The news organization that has
done so, is the National Enquirer. And you know the National Enquirer, they
check their facts, double check them and only then put the results of their
inquiries in print.

US politicians have been unable to grasp the popularity of the Donald. They
will be as surprised as their British counterparts on the morning they woke
up to Brexit.

One thing is sure, I got a lot of return for the small donation I made to
the Trump campaign. Now that Donald is assuring all Republicans that he
will not work with a Republican controlled House and/or Senate, I think the
time has come for me to double my donations to support the Donald's vision.

BTW, talking about spin, the organisation any spin master would like to
work for is Faux News er, Fox News.

2016-10-12 Thread Jim Fernandes

Folks,

Back in 2013 I wrote on GoaNet about a company named Tesla and why people will
begin to buy battery powered cars. At the time, I predicted that Tesla will go
on to sound the death knell for gasoline powered cars within 20 years - give or
take a few.

Well, the company is on its way to making big Moolah. You can see their latest
here:
https://www.thestreet.com/story/13850847/1/tesla-s-tsla-model-3-pre-orders-show-people-will-buy-electric-cars-for-right-price.html?puc=yahoo_ven=YAHOO

You can read my original post here:
https://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg95325.html

As usual, the Canadian sheikh had his two cents to add to the discussion. You
can see at below link, my argument about why a car running on internal
combustion is heading into a death spiral.
https://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg95379.html

I couldn't wait for their car $35,000 any longer and so I got this.
https://www.google.com/search?q=jeep+white+grand+cherokee=isch=v5gAFzlegEoHmM%253A%253BJUBqk2KlqPSEgM%253Bhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.pinterest.com%25252Fap110214%25252Fcars%25252F=iu=m=v5gAFzlegEoHmM%253A%252CJUBqk2KlqPSEgM%252C_=__y1Hy8Zde4SX6tRtmk3pIP-3dU04%3D=1664=711=0.9=0ahUKEwiWq-fQktbPAhXL6xQKHVqGA-gQyjcINw=cKL-V5azAcvXU9qMjsAO#imgrc=v5gAFzlegEoHmM%3A

But maybe, in two or three years, I may try again.

On the investment front, I was hoping OPEC would walk out of their MUNAQASHAT
without any deal - which would have crushed the markets - which is what I was
hoping for. Though they did walk away without any formal production cuts, they
also threw a bone to gullible investors to ensure the price of their oil does
not collapse. In a way, OPEC threw cold water on my expectations. But they
better hold their line on production or else, oil heading back to $30.

Had I relied completely on OPEC outcome to make investment decisions, I would
have been still sitting on TIPS. However, just before their meeting I got
thinking (what if they screw up my expectations?) and decided to dabble in some
Option Calls. The move paid off handsomely. Did you guys notice AMZN rocketed
to the moon lately? Yeah - I was on that space ship.

On track to leave the S in the dust many times over.
