No Chris, what i was trying to imply was, if there was a way to be in
the
list near the top, even if it ment registering some where, Not cheating.
Why
would that be considered cheating? It would just be an easier way for
player's or mainly clan member's to find the server quickly, instead of
having to type connect 111.222.333.333:27015 don't you think? Cheating
is
what someone whom is getting a profit for having there game server up
would
do, be we don't get anything for it. So please refrane the word
Cheating.
Anyway thanx for your opinion.

It's sortable, I believe the default is ping but you can sort by
anything you want, players, name, map whatever. (I'm talking in game
 browser here)

Joey, I was cool till you asked Is there a way to have our server's
always appear near the top? which implies that instead of attracting
players the normal way, you wanted to cheat. It was a pretty immature
question on your part to begin with IMO.

 Hi,
The servers get sorted by best IP on top, starting the update
 proccess closest to your IP.

Thats why it appears that only the 208 range shows up first. Your
IP
prolly starts with 208 or close to it.

 Hey guys,
Do any of you know what controls the way that servers get
populated
into the master list when a users clicks on them? Is it
determined
by the user's internet connection or does Steam send the list in a
certain order when a user/client requests it? Seems like when I
check the Master List I get all the server Ips starting with 208.
first, and the rest come in later.

So you are running 10 servers.. When one is full the other empty ones
are slowing down the full?
What will then happen when people starting joining one of the other
servers?
Seems to me you are trying to run more then your CPU can handle and I
don't really see a solution to this except adding more CPU power or
running less servers.

[hlds] Re: I figured out why map changes took so long... + AMXMODX plugins.

2006-05-23 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
I will give it a shoot then;

I want there to be a plugin which changes the users name based on his
STEAM_ID and disables him to change it to something else. Like the
AMXBANS it would be nice to have a database and a web interface to
manage/add new names.

Taking this to a new level it could be like AMXBANS and let other
servers connect to the database, fetch names and enforce them. And maybe
the server can display a name authenticated message to people on the
server. If its possible to do the check both ways.. kick players who use
a name from the database that doesn't match the right STEAM_ID. Imagine
how good this would be to a server community.

If this is too hard.. i would love just a script getting names from a
text file and enforcing them.
Maybe someone else has some better ideas.

This is an AMX plugin. Idea behind it is to keep bans in MySQL
database rather than in .cfg file and defer ban check until client
actually try to connect.
Another advantage is that you don't have to worry about syncing
banlists on multiple servers as long as all of them are using the same
database.
Should you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Did you add your name to a list at any given time? Seems like that would
answer your question right there. For example, I am an admin on all of
my servers. I don't recal putting my name on a list incase someone was
upset over a ban.

If they want you to find them, they'll make that information available,
otherwise find another server. There's only what... 30 CS

Is there a list someplace? I am admin on my server, FOR EXAMPLE.

Alfred please help

We are in need of help to solve a on going problem with server side
map
differs errors.
When clients connect to any of our 1U servers they will get Map differs
errors on the stock maps. This error happens on stock source css, 1.6,
and
Source DOD maps. We have a OZ server running for the last week that has
had
no issues as of this writing.

Here are the server specs.
Server 2
dual amd 2400+ mps
Tyan mb
2 gig ecc pc 2100
2 sata 1 rmp Raptors 36Gb raid 0
win 2000

Server 1
dual amd 2400+ mps
Tyan mb
2 gig ecc pc 2100
2 IDE 7200 rmp 40 gig
Fedora core 4

At one time both servers were exactly the same,(same as Server 1 but
with
windows installed)

We thought it might be a hard drive issue so we upgraded Server 2 with
new
Raptor 36 gig hard drives/raid 0 and installed Fedora on server 1 hoping
to
elimante it from being a Windows OS problem. After the upgrade to this
1U we
ran Memtest for 14 hours and a 2nd session of 6 hours with no errors, we
also ran Prime95 over night with no errors.
Within 5 hours of the fresh server 2000 install/hard drives on server 2
the
stock maps
started to differ, the other 1U(server 1) ran for almost 2 weeks on
stock
Source CSS
maps before having this problem and it gets worse every day.
Again this same problem happens on both 1U boxs to stock .bsp files and
a
few .wav files on the Linux box, all verified by the hlds tool/verify
all
command
The Source CSS server`s map differs errors is 4 to 1 to the 1.6 server
We
have also noticed that the .bsp that differ are haveing the md5
hash/check
sum changed. However we can not find what is changing them. The only
way
to fix them is to run the hldsupdatetool with -verify_all and have it
redownload the stock maps and then they work. We need to run the hlds
tool
about every 4 hours or less.

This is my plea Help us
I will run any program you suggest or give you complete access to one or
both boxs if this problem interests you at all.
Thanks

The Famous Your Map de_dust differs from the server ERROR.
It happens with all stock or at one time or another any custom map we
run in
no recognizable pattern.

We have had this annoying problem for a long long time on 2 1U boxs we
use
to run CSS, DOD and CS servers on. I do not know if its a Steam issue or
a
OS issue of some sort. This has nothing to do with the client side
files,
FTP programs or the Bz2 files hosted for downloading on a separate
website
so please do not even bring it up.
We have a fresh install of Server 2000 as a set of new HD`s were just
added.
All the server files were downloaded directly from Steam with the
hldsupdatetool and a NEW STOCK Source server was setup and running.
There
was no FTP program installed or used for these files.
We decide to test the server with the stock install as we hoped we had
corrected the issue on this box, but it was not running more than 5
hours
when we started getting Your Map any_stockmap differs from the server
Out
of the 17 Stock maps 8 of them were then updated by hldsupdatetool with
update -game Counter-Strike Source -dir D:\CSS\AnB -verify_all
-retry
command to fix the problem as we have done this so many times before.
On Custom Map differs we delete and upload to the server again. This can
happen on a daily basis to any maps or just the same one for a while and
some times can go a week or so with out happening.
At about 6:30 pm this evening on the last differ of de_dust we deleted
a
members client gfc contenet and then updated, connected to the server
and
still had a differ problem.
I do not know if it`s an issue with our 1U`s as they were identical up
to
the fresh OS install and adding new HD`s to 1 of them.
Both have Dual 2400`s Tyan Mobos, 2 GB ECC ram and run Server 2000
1 has Dual 7200RPM IDE

ever since the last update in cs source we have had trouble with our

our 50 man source server runs in high priority and uses about 20% of our

when we vote on a map or whatever when there are a few players we have

RE: [hlds] Low FPS even with pingbooster

2005-10-06 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
At 80% you are close to maxing out your CPU.
What tools do you use to measure load?
If it uses average, maybe your server is acctually hitting 100% many times
as you will experience this as lag spikes. Big shoot-outs at big open spaces
on a map will cause more use of CPU.

I don't know how a CPU works, but there must be a cueue of some sort, right?
At 80% this cueue will probably have a longer prosessing time then if you
ran at 20-30%.
Also the CPU might have a problem with heat at higher loads.

Just brain-storming :)

Again, pingbooster does nothing because the server can't go above 40 FPS (it
doesn't matter if pingbooster is on or off) when there are more than 20
players connected even though the CPU load is only at 80%. Sorry for all the
replies, I sent that last one by mistake. I just don't understand what's

Okay, here goes. Want to move my 1.6 bans over to DoDS. I have a HUGE ban
file (running a very strict server for a little over 2 years now) so I have
about 5000 unique steam IDs I want to move.

I understand the new format (ie 'banid 0.0' is now 'banid 0'). I created a
file called 16bans.cfg and called it in my server.cfg AFTER banned_user.cfg.
When I booted the server, the banned_user.cfg was immediately updated with
the first 2777 IDs in the 16bans.cfg file. I don't know if that's all the
bans allowed and I certainly can't figure out why the bans were loaded into
the banned_user.cfg when I'm trying to keep them seperate.

Any help on getting this working would be great. It's not that important to
me that I have all my bans in seperate files, but I do want to make sure
that the ENTIRE list of steam IDs is loaded in so that those that have been
banned, stay banned.
Thanks

 to all who insult this.

I personally wouldn't let them be admin on my servers I emailed zach and
 let
him know that but I figured it would be a good idea to setup a global ban
list by this for hackers. And emailed him that. He agreed and we are now
going to be doing that. I run 3 servers with a co owners running 2 more. I
dare not allow people that much power on them without me knowing. But at
the same time I would like to setup a global ban system so that there is
less need for admins 24/7 and more communication between the hosting
 groups.
I have setup a ftp site where people can upload their banlists I am
 willing
to help cordinate this. If interested xfire or aim me at sprout1 for xfire
sprout1142 for aim. or email me back at my own email address not here and

Well nothing wrong with it I guess if you have a good way to moderate
 the
way its working. And a good close monitor on admin abuse/complaints.

  BUT..

you can apply to have your server host us, or apply to become a league
  admin.

So you mean to tell me if you supply a server you are not automatically
 an
admin in every server in the community?Hummm.Kinda defeats the
  purpose.Even
though I wouldn't let anyone I don't know run my servers for me I do
 think
with proper planning ect, this idea has merit. The only downside I see is
  when
alot of people start abusing, following people from server to server
 simply
because they do not like them or dumb admins. With 10-20 servers I see it
working. But from 50-100 I think it would fall apart. But time will tell
 and
once it gets up and rolling an has been up for a year or so I'll make a
  decision then.

2005-09-30 Thread Alexander Kobbevik

Can you introduce your self a little?
Age, location, personal status?

If you want trust, you got to give.

Another thing; you don't think hackers infiltrate such organizations
pretty quick if they actually think you will oppose a threat?
You got to have a solid backbone in such a system (aka administration
tools).
I use http://www.checkyour6.net/index.php?cat=toolssub=phpadmin to
centrally manage my admins and bans. It will also log admin activity. All
web-based. This is just a suggestion so you see what kind of tools I mean.

Good initiative, but I seen this before... its like a woman's period... it
comes and goes...

Hldsupdatetool does not require a steam account, etc.

Hldsupdatetool is for both win32 and linux.

Steam (the application) is a gui, that includes the client-side games,
and also now has servers in it also, but hldsupdatetool is much nicer to
work with, when running more than 1 server, etc.

GIVE IT A REST ALL OF YOU!

Dan's is the only email that should have replied to this email from
kissker The above is the kind of abuse and the general whinyness of a
frightening number of people on this list that make people want to leave it!

Understandably everyone is a little upset about the lack of DOD:S
Dedicated Server and the sometime interesting updates, but do we
really have to have a dozen threads by a dozen different people on the
same subject?? Or the abuse that comes from some of the people on this
list to normal questions or when they are incapable of giving
intelligent responses. No we don't!

I stay on this list because there are a few people on here that provide
excellent help and assistance, because of the notices that we get from
Valve and because they do actually listen to some of what is said on
this list. Frankly the way this list has been of late I'm amazed they
listen to anything that anyone says!

I would be extremely pleased to see Valve taking a closer hand in
moderating this list and kicking out the persistent abusers and whiners.

In the mean time - learn some mailing list etiquette
(http://www.gweep.ca/~edmonds/usenet/ml-etiquette.html) and realise when
you're writing like a wanker
(http://www.guidenet.net/resources/wanker.html) and stop yourselves!!

No more in this thread! Its closed! There is no need for any more
responses!

Thank you.

Would you close the shortcut if it was full of snakes?
Or would you just let them use it despite you knew about the safety risk
there is to use it?

(Didn't they say it was a security issue they closed down?)

---

If you provide a road from A to B. But if most people can use a shortcut,
to save them time, they will use it. After a while you will have a path
going through that shortcut. Why not simply create a road on that path?

If all the plugindevelopers want to use the system a certain way. And
doing it through a nifty hack. Why not just realize that, and include
those into the SDK?

The discussion about the menusystem a great couple of month ago, when you
shut down the ability to use the widely used ingame menu is a good example
of an option that should be included into the SDK, or give a way to
accomplish exactly the same thing.

I can only se benefits for both valve and the community to include such
options.

2005-09-22 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
18 players of 24 that doesn't have the map you are running, doesn't sound
real.
And if so, clients will only download it once.
You should be running a lot of custom maps to have this problem.

And like someone else said, if you care about performance you will not run
the server on a poor connection.
The tranfers are also a lot smaller when only 6 people are playing, right?

Also like someone else said, the game server it self is limiting the
download when not using sv_downloadurl (to the rate settings?) My only
reason to use this is to speed up that transfeer. Not to save the network
load.

You shouldn't run your sv_downloadurl mirror on the same physical
location as your Game servers. Think about it. Do you really want your
Game Servers precious resources being squandered on downloading map
files to 18 players on a full 24 slot server? The other six players are
going to experience some erratic play while your server pushes out files
to 18 people at the same time and tries to run your game servers. Not
to mention anyone playing on any other game servers you happen to be
running at the same time will suffer as well. If you do not have
separate web space there are places to get sv_downloadurl resources for
a very reasonable price.I use URLDownload.com and I have been very happy
with them. If you are going to offer High Speed Downloads to your
players the cost is not that hard to deal with.

Alfred,

I Have not found a single person that can successfully connect to
any
server. I've set up a fresh dedicated server w/ CS1.6 totally updated and
tried connecting with Vac enabled and disabled both. Still can't connect.
Then I installed DOD, can not connect to DOD either. I do use a firewall,
totally disabled it to test it out.

This is what happens client-side. Will log in to Steam ok, launch
the game
and will attempt to connect without issues. The Content Server Banner no
longer appears but it completes the connection to the server. When MOTD
loads up, HL crashes and back to desktop.

I hope I'm not opening a can of worms or beating a dead dog

I moved my server from an Athlon box to a P4 3000MHz because I'm rebuilding
the Athlon box. I start the server, and I notice that it's running at 64fps.
I remember the brouhaha about server fps and flash animations, etc., so I
open firefox and goto www.flash.com (that seemed to me to be a good site to
find a flash animation ). Immediately, my server jumps up to 85.4 fps. I
close firefox, fps drops back to 64. Back to flash.com, fps jumps back to
85.4. What can I do to increase it? I'd like to see it at the 99fps it
normally runs at.

I just gave you the simplest of the simplest. I'm not exactly sure
what you're trying to accomplish here. How is this timestamp going to
be of any use to you? What is going to issue your ping command? If
you're simply typing it in manually, well, look at a clock! ;) If
you're using some script or batch file to run the command then I just
gave you the commands to put in your script or batch file. I think
it's pretty safe to say that ping -T isn't really what you're
thinking it is, and isn't what you want. If you want to know what the
time was/is when you issue a command, the simplest way to do that is
to issue a command just before/after that displays the current
date/time. In win32 you can do that with the command I showed
earlier, a echo.|time will display the current time. In linux/*nix
you can display that with the date command.

RE: [hlds] Server not showing up on network

2005-08-19 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
Im having the same issue.
I have not had time to do anything with it yet though.

I have two HLDS's on the same Windows 2003 server SP 1 install.
One works just fine but the other does not. HLDS shows no errors while
starting. And it looks like it is running just fine.

The HLDS which runs fine is a clean HLDS without any plugins.
Other one is running all kinds of things.

I will try your suggestion of sv_lan 1 to see if that fixes mine as well.
I guess its just to squice in that in the end of the server.cfg ;)

I also undated windows as well as update the HLDS.

I have a problem with a couple of servers that have been up and running
for at least a year without any problems. This has been going on for a
little over a day.

 The problem:

Server does not show up in Steam Server browser, HLSW or any list that
I have tried. It also doesn't show up on the LAN tab in the Steam
 browser either.
Clients cannot connect using any methods. RCON cannot connect either.
Even the Gamepanel RCON cannot connect from the SAME machine!

 Server Specs:

 Hardware:
 HP Proliant DL 380
 Dual 3.0GHz Xeons
 3GB Memory
5x Ultra 320 SCSI 72GB Drives (Raid 5) Dual NICs Teamed for 2GB

 Firewall:
 Sonicwall Pro 230 - Ports 27014 - 27015 are open

 Operating System:
 Windows 2003 Server Standard edition
 Service Pack 1
All the latest security and Hardware patches as of yesterday... Not
all patches were installed when this occurred, but I patched anyway.

 HLDS (CS 1.6)
 Protocol version 47
 Cstrike version 1.1.2.5
 EXE Build 3213
Running as a service using Gamepanel beta 4 - tried stating it in
 command line, same thing...

Addons -- Tried running it stock, no modules or plugins - no
difference AMX mod 0.9.9 MetaMod 1.17.4

 Steps taken:

Copied complete installation from a working server - No change
Confirmed the ports are listed with Netstat -a -b

Now the funny part. If I type sv_lan 1 in console it shows up on the
LAN tab. If I type sv_lan 0 AFTER that it immediately shows up to the
rest of the world, and clients can connect. All is well until the
server is stopped and restarts. This method ONLY works in the REAL
CONSOLE! I tried putting the commands in the server.cfg and in a few
other cfg files. It executes them, I can see the output in the console
but this method has no effect on the server showing up outside.
Another thing I noticed is when this happens the log files are truncated.
The log never seems to finish the Ban list. I shortened the Ban list
 to test, same problem.
If I type sv_lan 1 then sv_lan 0, then type restart the new log looks
 fine.
No errors either in the console or in the logs at any time during this.

Excerpt from one of the truncated logs:
 L 08/18/2005 - 10:29:45: Ban: STEAM_0:0

Nothing seems to have changed when I do a netstat.

IP address: 67.93.155.126:27015 and 27014 - Both are running, but I do
the sv_lan 1/0 only on the 27015 so

I had something similar happen to me once but mani was not involved.
Someone who had just connected to the server (not even in the game

I changed the rcon password and I haven't noticed it since. This was

RE: [hlds] Half Life server problems

2005-08-16 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
I don't see any point at all hiding your external ip.
Why you have a firewall is to protect and hide infrastructure on the INSIDE.

And if you list your server ip maybe someone can try to connect and help
out.

As long as your router doesn't have a loop-back, you have to connect to your
internal IP adress.

http://showmyip.com/ check that you have the correct ip.

You don't have to forwards ports manually if you have set your computer as a
DMZ in the router. But you do have to open the ports in the firewall if it
doesn't open that automatically. Some do, some don't.

Your dedicated server will show its IP adress, not the IP of your router.
People on the inside will still be able to connect to the internal server if
you have forwarded the port correctly or set up DMZ to your server.

I hope some of this helps for now.
Maybe some pro's will help you out later, and correct me if im wrong.

You can disable it, as Mani has it's own section dedicated to rcon commands
that are allowed to run. A few stats packages require rcon though, most
notably HLstats and HLstatsX.

When you run mods like mani, can't you just disable RCON?
Or does it need to be there?

I had something similar happen to me once but mani was not involved.
Someone who had just connected to the server (not even in the game
yet) managed to hack the quite complex rcon password and start
spamming dozens of lines of hahahahahahaha as console chat all
within one second. When I noticed this in the logs the next day (some
other event caused me to look through my logs and I came across this),
I changed the rcon password and I haven't noticed it since. This was
like 4 months ago.

server. I join and all is going well so I leave, then check HLSW and
someone is talking as Console. I take a quick snapshot of all the
Steam ID's involved plow into the logs. Cannot tell what is going
on. People are asking the Console for Admin there are none on the
box! Looks like a map was changed without a vote. I'm lost. I did ban
one guy that caught my eye and nothing has happened for a little while
 but we'll see.

There are only 3 admins, none with RCON password but me none of them

Just me or anyone else getting this? Maybe a new hack out there?

Oh, and it is a VAC2 secure server.

RE: [hlds] Roll back on client

2005-08-15 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
.
Roll back on client...

This has nothing to do with this server-list unless someone claims that the
server is affected.. which I have not seen yet. Saying that Steam.exe is the
problem and therefore affect both servers and clients is just silly.
That other clients is affected when someone lags like that, yes. But read:
clients. Clients affecting other clients, not the servers.

Supported is a word maybe some of you misunderstand in the meaning of
Supported OS.
It does not mean VALVe will not help out what so ever. It does not mean they
will not try to fix it, it simply means that this OS does not have the right
for support. You can probably get it.. but you cant expect it.

I'm not sure if VALVe sells support with/for this game, but if they do it
means they have to give you support on supported OS's. If the software does
not work on a supported OS(and they don't help you fix it) I believe you can
claim your money back. But in this case VALVe is constantly working on the
client and the server, I doubt you will be able to get anything back.

Alexander

He asked you if you wanted to share what the problem was, you replied with
that link.
I read the link, and posted your answer from that link. Basically so people
here didn't have to go to the forums to get the answer. Your post on the
forum was pretty clear to me, maybe I misunderstood?

Sorry me for frying your ass... but you should not join an argument about

Norton is good or bad, you clearly have no clue...

I use it, obviously you don't... don't talk about what you don't know.

I based my reply upon YOUR post, which means I KNOW that you use it AND I
know that your argument about Norton being a good software package was based
upon the fact that you only had a problem with it once since you started to
use it. That software is having errors is not the only argument of it being
good or bad. (discussing it with you seems pointless though.. maybe someone
else wants to yell at me who actually knows something more about the
software besides basic problems?) Me on the other side, didn't give you
any information on anything I use.. or what I do... so your statement is
just based on your own imagination...

I read the thread and I think you are wrong.. I now explained why... if you
still think you are right.. why don't you try to explain why... which I
think you will have a hard time doing...
I'm very sorry if you mean different things then what you write... but this

Yes, have a look at your logs

When can we expect to have it loaded by default on HL1 servers?

The stickies in steampowered will tell you that they are not telling
people dates, however you will probably find that Alfred will give a
'server will needed to be updated' heads-up about it 2-4 hours before
it comes.

Can we get a hint if it is working well, from valve?
 Numbers of bans/detections by now?

Again the stickies say this won't be disclosed. However I can tell you
that about 20 out of 1,000 people on my server since the update
haven't been let in since VAC2 went live. And you can make the
presumption that a lot of them have stopped trying to get into secure
servers now they are banned so won't show up in many logs.

I have a TODO item to add the autoupdate functionality to windows, there
are a couple gotcha's associated with windows that need to be resolved
first.
In the meantime if you are running via the hldsupdatetool you can scan
for 'Your server is out of date. Please update and restart.' in the
console (not log files!) and trigger a restart off that (I guess this
requires the firedaemon guys to do some work).

Just yesterday one of the servers outside of my management which I
play on quite regularly came to sending me a pile of cvar requests
(normal for some of the hack-check systems) then it sent me a pile
data which I cannot identify - followed by a console clear.

Now forgive me for my paranioa, but IMO this is the start of Adware
financed servers - PLEASE PROTECT THE CLIENTS FROM THE SERVERS TOO!!!

Thanks for the info Alfred, unfortunately I still can't seem to get this
working for both my HL2 and HL1 server,

The HL2 works fine no problems, player can get fast downloads, but it blocks
my HL1 players from doing so.

Here's the contents of my .htaccess file. Can you see if I've got something
wrong in there, please.

SetEnvIfNoCase Referer ^hl2://212\.58\.145\.132 allow_download
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer ^hl1://81\.110\.202\.133 allow_download
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer ^hl2://81\.110\.202\.133 allow_download
Order Deny,Allow
Allow from env=allow_download
Deny from all

I have one remote HL2 server (the top one) and another local HL1 and HL2
server (the bottom two)

Any help appreciated,

Regards

Mick

 The HL1 engine uses:
 hl1://server ip

 For the referer syntax.

Wrong list, I know. Just don't want to sign up for linux just to get this
question answered.

Im running Debian Woody and it looks like it doesn't have the required
version of glibc.
But I get this message in the console when I updated the server;

Connection to Steam servers successful.

Does this mean im good with the new updates?

Thank you.

Couple of points of interest to server operators in this release.

1) The new querying subsystem has been implemented in HL1 now, the old
(vulnerable) protocol will be disabled in a future update (in the next
month or so). MAKE SURE TO UPDATE YOUR EXTERNAL TOOLS NOW. This process
has already happened for the Source engine so hopefully your tools
already work with the new query format.

2) Under Linux you now need at least GLIBC 2.3.2 (i.e what the Source
engine requires) to run the new VAC code. If your distribution is too
old you will see something like this in the console:

-
Error:./vstdlib_s_i486.so: undefined symbol: __cxa_atexit
Could not establish connection to Steam servers (steamclient).
-

You should upgrade your Linux distribution in this case. If you do not
upgrade you will not be able to run a secure server once the new VAC
system is released.

We have released an update to the HL1 engine, this update is for any
mod running under this engine. Run the hldsupdatetool to get the
 update.

This update fixes several potential crash exploits, adds the Source
style querying system to the engine and introduces some code to allow
us to enable the upcoming VAC system on HL1. More details can be
 found here:

PS! Can't someone who use this cvar go into the webserver and just see if

it means that the next update that's released will contain this.

RE: [hlds] Force demo playback?

I'm not sure how it works with CS:S but in 1.6 we have the possibility to
load the demo onto a computer with wallhack... to see more clearly if this
person is cheating.
Making a avi doesn't give you much options.

Maybe Valve would be kind enough to tell us what files we can backup to be
able to see the demos even after the netcode is changed. So that those who
wants to see old demos, can do so.

Whisper is so right.
Some people do things the right way. Not just ignorantly ban people because
they are without rights to play on your server.

PS:
And i understand why he starts to use language when so many of you provoke
him so bad.
If Alfred is to take action towards Whisper, I would want actions to be

After you know they're cheating, you ban. It's really quite simple. Do you
really need to view the demo over and over and over every day for a year to
remind yourself that he really was cheating and you did the right thing by
banning him? Somehow I doubt it. Once you've viewed it and it's been proven
to your satisfaction that he was cheating, I don't see why that's not the
end of the story.

How is spelling out the situation for him provoking him? heh. I don't work
at Valve. I'm not the one that fixes bugs and/or makes changes to the
protocol. The fact that I tell him that this is what's done is provoking
him? Heh. He's a child, acting like a child, or both. That's got nothing to
do with me. You've both got really screwed up points of view as to what you
think is happening and what is really happening...

Anyway, because I cannot resist, without having seen any gameplay
advantages in r_3dsky myself ... I'd guess if I were one to justify
the decision it would be for the following reasons

 1. It makes the game (CS:S) look ridiculous

 2. 3d skyboxes, and the way they're used in source (for things like
treetops etc), allows for quite expansive-looking and detailed maps
without a huge performance hit, if 1/3rd of your audience is going to
be turning them off, mappers (maybe even valve themselves) might end
up having to take it into consideration, either by making the maps
less efficient or cutting back on detail so the map doesn't look like
 a joke for 3dsky haters.

Saying that, I'd probably turn 3dsky off in a heartbeat for my poor
Ti4200 64mb ... but I can atleast sympathize with valve a bit on their
decision, based on my own thoughts.

after you've viewed it once, I don't much see the point of even keeping the
file. I don't see what the fuss is about. If someone cheated, ban them, end
of story. No need to worry about it later. Who cares what happened a month
ago, or 6 months, or a year, etc. Soon we'll know if VAC2's any good, and
even if it isn't we all know how to spot cheaters anyways. Protocol updates
don't happen very often, and when they do, oh well. Time marches on.
Pitching a humongous hissy fit about it isn't going to do any good. I don't
know why you guys have so much trouble understanding this, but sometimes
Valve's got to change the protocol to fix something. Who cares if you can't
ban a few cheaters from that week. If they come back at all, they'll
probably just be cheating again and you can ban them this week. It's
definitely not as big a deal as you seem to think it is.

So do what just about every other server admin out there has done, and

2005-05-25 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
And since noone replys I will try to answer my own question.

Yes Alexander, I believe it must be like that, or else it would be something
wrong!
But since noone knows, you should not take it for granted.

And while im at it;
Isn't sv_maxrate 25000 and sv_maxupdaterate 101 settings to use on LAN
games?
How low can you go before the game suffers too much?
Can someone redirect me to some sites where such settings are listed... for
internet play..

Thanks all.

Hello,

sv_maxrate
sv_minrate 8000
sv_maxupdaterate 80
sv_minupdaterate 70

Will this make sure all clients are within 8000- and 70-80 on those
settings. Or will the server try to send this minimum to clients who will
reject most of it if they have lower settings?

Is there a server side setting for that cmdupdaterate thingy too?

And hopefully its just me.. but replies takes forever to reach the list..

mind explaining why all/so many email/new clients start you off at the top
then? heh. Argue it all you like, apparently it's just a preference that is
different from person to person. My experience on the internet since 1992
has shown me that top-posting takes much less time to deal with, not to
mention every client I've ever used for similar correspondence has always
started a reply with the cursor positioned at the top. Doowutchyalike.

You'll find that text in _many_ mailing list FAQs.
All the mailing lists I read, except for this one where anything goes,
replying below quoted text is the Right Way.

ironchef's suggestions are good - I propose those stupid [hlds] type

btw, is something removing the space after the -- before a sig?

More and more people in our community thinks that you HAVE to run
25000/101/101
to comply to match rules. They tell all their friends to run the same
settings.

Running HLDS Counter Strike.
But will the server force the minimum successfully?

I just like to know what is appropriate for internet games.
25000/101/101 can't be normal for internet I hope!

Alexander,

While I agree with your request to continue top-posting, I must say I do not
agree with your reasoning behind it. Please note that sarcasm is being
turned on now:

It is a shame, nay an injustice that Valve dare offer this list as a free
service! It is far beyond resonable they make this list available to you
with commentary, responses to questions, notifications, let alone any
presence from an employee such as Mr. Reynolds (et al.) without requiring
that you pay some kind of fee! Damn them for not keeping posts on-topic
and filtered for content, and enforcing bottom posting!

Sarcasm off...

[hlds] sv_downloadurl

2005-05-02 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
I found this tutorial for the sv_downloadurl setting.
I was just wondering if I can get it to download any file, not only maps?

To do this, you copy the files needed for de_generic to your webspace,
placing them in a folder called my_cstrike in your webspace top-level
directory
Does it have to be my_cstrike, or what ever you choose as long as you keep
the structure from the root of the web area?

Why I ask is because I host fy_iceworld which needs de_vegas.wad to run.
The map gets downloaded but then cs crash with en error message containing
this wad file.

Any help would be appreciated.

HLDS and Counter strike 1.6.
I will try this Resgen and see if that works :)

I guess I was hoping it would be easier after looking at this tutorial.

TOP POST

Wait -- are you talking SRCDS or HLDS? If SRCDS, has ResGen been updated to
accomodate the new .RES format for SCRDS?

Regards,

Bud Ingram

sv_downloadurl will download maps, wad files, sprites, models, sounds,
and tga files. For this to happen you need to create a mapname.res
file for each map that contains all the external files required by the
 map. Resgen
at
www.unitedadmins.com will automatically generate .res files for you.

RE: [hlds] RANT: VAC2 servers....

2005-04-26 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
I thought the beta testing was collecting data from many many
servers(clients?), but when the server shows up as VAC secure; it will have
VAC acctivated and ready to ban?

Sounded like that to me atleast...
As usual I might be wrong.

Maybe those servers you found was the first three to go into the next stage
of the testing, as Alfred informed about?

Subject: [hlds] RANT: VAC2 servers

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
I got curious last night and decided I wanted to find out what servers are
part of the esteemed beta test for VAC2.

What I have found left me speechless for a few hours to say the least..

Only one set of servers has vac2 that I can see. These servers are all
identified with The-Space as the first part of their title.

3 of them to be exact.

66.93.87.42:27015

66.93.87.41:27015

66.81.7.226:27015

And NONE of them are central or east. Get this ALL west.

I did a trace. Apparently these are all speakeasy.net ips. Now I know that
Seattle is where Valve headquarters are/is (The ips traced to seattle
Washington speakeasy.net), however to my knowledge they are not The-Space.
One can only wonder who this server owner sucked off to get to be part of
this exclusive beta test. Bet odds its someone who curries favor with the
vac2 developers. I mean how does one get to say exclusively.I run the only
anticheat for this game, no other server in the world can say that. Is that
fair to the community in general? Not in my opinion.

They said it started logging already. But logging only 3 servers out of how
many? I bet the logs are about 100k in size. Couldn't be any larger, those
servers don't get much traffic. I know I've been watching them since I
discovered there existence.

And one can only wonder how many servers will crash with vac2 because of the
sole server group being used as a test pool. I can only wonder at the
incompetence of this.

Is Valve prepared for catastrophe on live day? You only have to do the
math to draw the same conclusion I did. 1,000s of servers + 1,000s of server
configurations x 5 or 6 (types of operating systems) = good odds live day
will be a disaster testing on only one server pool with the same exact
server configuration.

Last time I checked a beta test was to include more then just one group.
Its distributed to multiple platforms to test various server configurations.
This is done to ensure that MOST of the bugs are worked out and the software
is stable across multiple platforms. I think back to the days of steam
beta.gee that wasn't an exclusive beta test. Not one SOLE group, but
multiple groups.

Last time I checked tests were not done on one small group out of 1,000s of
server operators out there.

Think we may shutdown our 2.0 servers and replace them with BattleField2
servers come june. More money to be made in a game that doesn't
discriminate against its customers. Their anticheat is tested across a broad
number of platforms before being rolled out not just one groups.

To you flamers that just want to say go play that other game then. I will.
